An Interview with Trakena Prevost, Author of Cursed (The Guardian Chronicles)

Cursed - Trakena Prevost - Banner 2

Welcome, Trakena! Tell us more about your book—take us beyond the official “book blurb”.

Cursed is about one young girl’s journey to fight the darkness within herself. It started out with me asking myself a simple question: What if the drug problems of our world came from a paranormal source? And with that question the Dorgai and Suecai were born.

The main conflict is Jazz’s fight to maintain a sense of humanity in spite of the growing hunger that starts to take over her. This journey also forces her to open her eyes to new possibilities – to the love she’s always had for her closest friend, Khan.

Give us more info about your main characters—who are they?

Jazz is a typical firstborn child with a very unconventional life. She’s being trained to take over her dad’s leadership of the Chicago region for the Dorgai and has always felt the weight of that. Her bond with her parents and her team is very strong, and her desire to protect humans is her first priority behind her love for those closest to her. But when something terrible happens to her mom Jazz becomes consumed with a need to protect her mom at any and all costs. That need guides a lot of what she does, making her very reckless.

Khan, our love interest, has been by Jazz’s side since they were kids. They’ve grown up as the best of friends, and he wants nothing more than to protect her – even if that means protecting her from herself. He’s also harbored a love for her for quite some time and has quietly been waiting for her to discover that she feels the same way, not wanting to disrupt her responsibilities. He’s very responsible, fiercely loyal, and downright deadly when it comes to doing whatever’s necessary to protect Jazz.

They sound like really strong characters–and fun to read about!

What scene in your book was the most fun to write, and why?

The scene I loved writing the most was the first kiss between Jazz and Khan. When I write I like to have a fairly detailed outline to guide me, but sometimes my characters will go completely off script. Jazz and Khan’s first kiss originally was planned for later in the story, but then they were in the tent, having this very intense and serious conversation, and suddenly Khan made his move. The moment was filled with desperation, and love, and passion, and was completely hot!

Sounds like my kind of scene… 😉

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I started writing in 2007. At the time, I was surrounded by a plethora of creative folks of color…and they were magnetic, and wonderful, and inspiring. Being around them made me want to find my own creative voice, so I began to search for my niche. What I loved to do the most was to read…Paranormal YA Fantasy to be exact. So, one day I tried my hand at it and never stopped.

What do you like best about being a writer?

The best thing about being a writer is how I get to spend so much time in worlds where the impossible is plausible. It’s really great for my inner seven-year-old!

🙂

What is the most challenging part of being a writer?

The biggest challenge I faced as a writer was dealing with rejection. It’s hard to put your heart and soul into a written work and to have others not recognize how awesome it is =). But what I found is that if you keep going, and never give up, eventually your skin thickens. And with that perseverance, one day, someone will say, “Yes!”

Excellent advice!

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

Right now I’m mid-way through a YA Paranormal featuring Djinn (formal term for Genies) where I focus on the idea of free will and what that means to us all. I’m also outlining the second book in the Guardian Chronicles. What you can continue to expect from me is great, action filled adventures, featuring kick-assed heroines, that are filled with a diverse cast of characters. I remember quite vividly growing up loving to read, but feeling disappointed that no one in the books I loved looked like me. I want to remedy that.

Fantastic! Can’t wait….

What authors and/or books have inspired you?

I’m a huge fan of J.K. Rowling and Melissa Marr. The way that Rowling weaved the many storylines featured in Harry Potter, and how a lot of the details you read about in early books became pivotal in the latter ones, was just brilliant. If I can build something even half as wonderful as HP, then I’ll be a happy camper.

I’m with you–that would make me a happy camper for life!

What are you currently reading? What are your thoughts about it so far?

Currently, I’m reading A Cursed Embrace, by Cecy Robson. I love how she mixes in the various paranormal elements that we’ve all seen in separate books into one massively amazing story. I also am enjoying how wonderful the love story is, though she’s making me a bit upset with where it’s going right now (I’m sure she’ll bring it back on track soon…hopefully?).

Oh, I hope so! Nothing worse than when that doesn’t happen… 🙁

Please share a favorite scene from your books with our readers.

My favorite scene is below:

When he walked out the bathroom, the nerves I’d thought I’d turned to steel started to quiver. What if he refused me? Khan was just as stubborn as I was. How could I possibly ask this of him? How could I get him to understand?

I took a deep breath and looked at him. “Khan, we need to talk.”

“Uh oh, that’s never what a guy wants to hear from his girl.”

My stomach fluttered, but I refused to give into the distraction. “I have a plan…in case we don’t find and kill the Gunshi. But I need your help to pull it off.”

He didn’t look taken aback, just more determined than anything. “Jazz, it’s too soon for you to give up now. We’ve got some really good leads, we can do this!”

I shook my head. “I’m not giving up, Khan. I never give up…you know that.” I smiled at him and was rewarded with one in return. “But…being a leader means having to think outside of myself…you and my dad taught me that. We have to prepare for all possibilities – even this.”

His dark eyes flashed and, for a second, I thought I was in for a long and hard fight. Then understanding washed over his features and he nodded. “As long as you promise this doesn’t mean you’ve given up.”

“Not even close – and giving in doesn’t even sound like me.”

He snorted. “That’s for sure.”

I rolled my eyes. “Okay, I think we can do this, but if not…I have a forgetting tonic to erase my memories. That way, in the very least, the vermin can’t use my knowledge against everyone I love.”

Khan jerked. “Where in the hell did you…?” Then he groaned. “Claudine.”

I couldn’t help but smile. “She always has been good at knowing what I need.”

His face was hard. “Okay, so I’ll make sure to wipe away your memories. I’ll erase everything that makes you, you – everything I’ve grown to know and care about. We done?”

I paused. “Not quite.”

He flinched. “I figured something more was coming when you said, ‘In the least’.”

I almost didn’t have the guts to continue. “Think about it, Khan. You can’t just leave me there, a newbie Suecai with the urge to feed. What if I came across my mom one day? Or your dad?

“You might not be able to do it immediately – there’s no telling how strong I’ll be at first or how protected – but eventually you’ll have to take me out! I shuddered at the thought. “What else can we do?”

The rage flew through his features even more quickly than when I’d told him I couldn’t be his Valentine in the sixth grade.

“Anything, Jazz,” Khan whispered. “We fight. We search. We keep pounding the pavement until we find that bastard. We do anything and everything.”

Words escaped me. A boulder set squarely on my chest and wouldn’t budge. I should’ve known this wouldn’t be easy – hadn’t I spent my entire life traipsing around Chicago with Khan? I shouldn’t have expected anything else.

Khan seemed to take my silence as an opportunity to change my mind. “You could learn control, Jazz, become a full-fledged Dorgai.” There it was, that secret hope I held deep in my heart that I was too scary to speak out loud.

“Khan, that’s impossible. There’s no way I can learn control if I’m forced into feeding too fast. The only way we halfers manage it is by taking an entire year to ease into the process. All of Dad’s advisors are agreed that I’ll become an uncontrollable Suecai.”

“I can’t believe that, Jazz. It can’t happen. Not to you.”

I couldn’t focus. My need to be rational kept battling the little girl within me reaching for a solution, any solution.

I didn’t notice Khan moving until it was too late.

Before I could say something to break the bubble, Khan stood over me, his face inches from mine. His eyes were warm and I could feel the heat of his breath, minty from his recent trip to the bathroom. My heart stopped. And then he was kissing me, slow and deep at first, and then with a heat and passion I’d only guessed he possessed.

Wow! What a scene! Thanks again for being here, Trakena, and best of luck with this series–sounds great!

Author Bio:

Trakena Prevost was born and raised in the great state of Texas, where everything IS bigger and the people are very friendly. She spends most of her time oscillating between being completely obsessed with reading and watching Korean dramas, and writing down the fantastic tales rumbling around in her head. When not reading and writing, Trakena spends her time working in HR for a major medical system in Houston, and hanging out with her family and friends.

Trakena has always loved the many worlds she’s found in books, where everything was possible. As a child, you would often catch her enjoying a good story in the comfort of the AC, instead of wilting in the Houston heat (she showed great intelligence…even then). It didn’t occur to Trakena that the fanciful stories she made up for fun could one day be out in the world, but now that they are she can’t imagine it any other way!

Excerpt

I finally reach the end and sit, placing my legs over the side, but because of my height they do not reach the water. The night begins to replay through my thoughts. I can’t believe everything I’ve worked so hard for is crashing down around me. Being squad captain of one of the top 5 squads in the country guaranteed me a spot on almost any college in the country. Even if this Hicksville town, Mississippi has a cheer leading squad, will they even have room for another cheerleader? Do they even compete? Now, I’m going to have to work harder just to get a tryout at the colleges I’m interested in.

Why would my parents just pick up and move us when I have one year of high school left? How do they expect me to just leave everything I know behind and start over? I have friends here, family, that has to mean something to them. This isn’t fair. Maybe I can think of a way to stay behind. I just have to. My parents have got to understand what this will do to me. I just want to wake up and realize this is all a dream. All I can do is stare out at the ocean, lost in thought.

All of my emotions finally catch up to me and the tears start to fall, heavier this time. I can’t stop them anymore. I don’t know what to do. Everything was going great in my life and now the misery is about to begin. I don’t even try to wipe the tears away anymore, I just let them flow. I don’t understand out of all the states in the continental U.S., why my parents have to choose some po-dunk town in Mississippi. I can’t imagine the kind of people that reside there. After that big hurricane, Katrina I think, they had people walking around barefooted and missing teeth. Do they even have shopping malls and designer clothes, I wonder, or is it full of trailer parks and cow fields. My stomach turns at the thought. I’m not sure how long I’ve been sitting there, staring at the water, but my back is beginning to hurt and I’m growing tired from crying, but the tears continue to fall. I should just go home and go to bed, but I’m not ready to face my parents yet. I lay back against the pier, looking into the sky. Its dark, but the sky is clear. There is not a cloud for miles. It’s beautiful glancing out at all the stars, shining brightly. It’s also a full moon tonight. A strange peacefulness begins to wash over me, causing me to close my eyes. Clearly my mind is not in normal territory, because I would never close my eyes late at night on a public beach. There are too many creeps out there.

I couldn’t have been laying there but what seemed like a few minutes. I must have dozed off when, “Mind if I join you,” flows through my ears in a deep, raspy voice. My eyes pop open and a tall familiar face is standing over me, looking down, with a smile on his face.

I begin to panic and sit up in a hurry, embarrassed. Embarrassment is a rare trait for me and this guy has brought it out twice in one day. “I’m sorry, I don’t usually do this; it’s been a bad night.” I look back out at the water, gripping the side of the pier, as if the most beautiful boy isn’t standing behind me. Right then, I can feel his breathing on the back of my neck, quickening my heart rate. In the short time, he has managed to squat behind me, the inside of each knee resting against my side.

He begins to whisper in my ear, “May I keep you company for a while? I’ll be quiet if that’s what you need.” His breath is so light, it tickles my ear. I can barely breathe, let alone speak, so I just nod. My head is fuzzy and I can’t think when he’s this close.

He sits beside me and removes his shoes, placing his feet in the water. I’m finally able to exhale the breath I’ve been holding. “How long have you been here?” I turn and glance at him, to find that he’s staring at me. I don’t know where this guy is from, I don’t really care, but he’s gorgeous. I never take an interest in a guy, it’s one of my few rules, but following rules have gotten me nowhere, obviously. I’m not thinking clearly anyway, I guess I can break my rule and enjoy his company for a while. He is leaving soon anyway and right now I need a distraction from all this bad news.

He reaches out slowly, as if he’s afraid I’ll run away, placing his hand over my cheek, rubbing his thumb underneath my eye, freeing it from the wetness of the tears. Great, I have no idea what I look like right now. “I needed to clear my head and came to the beach, I saw you standing by the water earlier, are you okay?”

My eyes close at the warmth from his hand. I should be mad he followed me, but I can’t. I just want him near me, but no personal questions. I don’t need him to know me or what makes me tick. I don’t need any complications. I open my eyes to him staring at my lips. “Can we just exist together without trying to obtain personal quota? Let’s just enjoy casual company, two people needing nothing from each other. Clearly you’re not from here, meaning you’ll be gone soon. I’m not one of those girls that needs or wants to know everything about you nor do I want to spill my entire life to you. We don’t have to pretend with each other, let’s call this what it is. Can you do that?”

He just stares at me as if he’s trying to figure me out, like I’m a book full of secrets. He seems lost in my eyes, amused, confused, I don’t know. We sit there staring at each other as if we can’t pull away. He doesn’t say anything, just bites his lip as if he’s trying to answer his own question, or to make a decision. I’m about to get up and walk away, when his other hand reaches behind my neck, pulling me closer. His lips stop in front of mine, close enough to touch, when he whispers, “Beautiful,” and crashes his lips to mine.

His lips are so soft and full, but needy. His warm tongue slips through the opening of my lips, requesting entry. Our tongues taste, touch, and dance together. A moan, barely more than a whisper, escapes my lips. I run my hands across his arms and up his neck, into the back of his hair. My heart is beating wildly. Foreign emotions are running through my body. I have never felt this need before, but it’s as if my body needs more. Suddenly, I feel like I need to cross my legs from the spasms down below. What is he doing to me? What does this mean? He turns, laying me against the pier. He has one hand on my waist, the other beside my head, holding his weight above me, like when we were at the beach. He continues to kiss me, taking my bottom lip into his mouth, lightly sucking. He makes a low growling sound from his throat. I’m not sure why until I feel his need pressed against the bottom of my belly, making my eyes go wide from surprise. Oh no, I can’t go there. As if he can sense my panic, he stops. He kisses me one last time softly and releases my lips.

He looks me in the eyes, a smile growing across his face. He brushes his fingers through my hair, down my arm and grabs me by the hand, interlacing his fingers with mine. “Nothing personal huh, I think I can do that.” His lips brush mine quickly before he moves back to his spot of the pier, pulling me by my hand to sit between his legs. “I promise I’ll be good for the rest of the night. I’ve just wanted to do that all day.”

I’m completely and utterly speechless. I have no idea what I’m doing. I never do reckless or unplanned things like this. I have no idea who this guy is, really, and now I’m sitting on the pier making out with him. I really need to get my head back in the game. I always think everything through before I make a decision. Being around him takes away my ability to process. Right now there are so many unknowns, but what I do know is that I’m not ready for it to end just yet.

to escape for a while through the characters of a good romance. Any romance

At first, she thought it was funny because editing was as close as she thought
she would get to the creative side of book writing, but then came up with a

“He’s primed and waiting whore…” I pushed hard past her and headed for the exit door. Just as I pushed the bus door open Cash came around the corner.

“There you are!” His small faltered when he saw how pissed I was. “Whoa, are you okay?” I threw my hand up to stop him from asking anymore and continued to walk to my bus.

“ARIANNA! WAIT!!!” I heard Bryden yelling from behind me.

He followed me…

Review and New Release: Tangling With the CEO by Annie Seaton (Book one in the Half Moon Bay series)

Tangling with the CEO: A Half Moon Bay Novel by Annie Seaton

Blurb:

Mixing business with pleasure never felt so right.

Blake Buchanan and Anastasia Delaney were roommates in college and could never see eye to eye about anything. The only time their walls came down was during one night of passion before Ana left without a word, never expecting to cross paths with Blake again.

Years later, Blake has made his millions. He comes back to Ana’s small California town to manage a corporate takeover that will close down the home restoration business she’s poured her heart and soul into. The fiery Ana is determined to convince money-minded Blake of her business’s worth, but when a family emergency throws them together, their walls come tumbling down once again…

Problem is, Blake’s business-first position hasn’t changed. And Ana can’t fall for the man who could become her boss—it’s not only her job at stake, but her heart.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

(really, it’s 3 1/2 stars)

This was an enjoyable read, and a promising start to a new series. I like that the Bliss line is one I can share with my 14-year-old without having to worry about her learning too much too soon 🙂

What I liked:

– The premise of the novel–I love the hero/heroine with a past, especially when that past involved a mystery/misunderstanding

– Blake’s niece and nephews (and their dog)–what a fun group! They made for a nice ice-breaker to ease Blake and Ana into a relationship again

– The elderly people of Nebitton–I can see them contributing a lot to future novels in the series

– The setting. A nice blend of San Francisco and small-town California, neither of which I’ve been to, but they sure sound like fun

– Very sweet ending 🙂

Things that made me go hmmmmmmmm:

– Conflict felt a bit contrived at times–the hero and heroine (heroine especially) seemed to go out of their way to manufacture and/or extend their difficulties. Ana’s refusal to listen to Blake toward the end really rubbed me the wrong way

– Does anyone in the US call a yard a “garden”? I’ve noticed this a few times lately, but it’s always been non-US writers doing it…it’s not a huge deal, obviously, but it still gives me pause. I’m always picturing the characters actually in a garden; in this book I was hoping the twins weren’t going to trample any tomato plants as they ran around… 😉

Overall this was an enjoyable read in a series I’m hoping to read more of in the future. Georgie and Sienna definitely need their own HEAs. Hopefully Jack will feature in there as well….

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Excerpt:

Beautiful, isn’t it? I fell so in love with this place when I was little and dreamed I’d live in a house like this someday.” Margie laughed. “Of course, in my dreams it was a bit less rundown.”

“I’d imagine so. Interested in buying?”

“Oh, if only I could, I would in an instant. I’m sure the property alone is worth far more than I can afford.  It’s a huge piece of land. And the repairs and restoration…” Longing swelled. She sighed. Someone else would buy and live in her dream home.

Quiet fell between them for a while. Bees buzzed in the clover. Birds sang, chirped, and flitted. A hummingbird whizzed past. Two more ducks joined the first amid quiet bickering quacks. Dandelion fluff drifted by on an unfelt breeze.

A truck rattled down the lane, breaking the moment.

“Suppose we ought to head back…” Christopher turned, so close their arms brushed, but instead of retreating, he hesitated. Their eyes locked. Where dismay and frustration had filled his green eyes, want simmered. The heavy air electrified.

You need a change.

On a surge of bewildering crazy courage, she stretched up and kissed him. The brief brush of lips to lips left her shaken and her heart pounding, like she had  just come up for air.

His eyes widened in his serious, craggy face.

No, oh, no. Blowing out an unsteady breath, she pressed a hand to her stomach. She’d carried her day’s adventure one impetuous step too far. Her heroines were the daring part of her. She’d never even kissed on a first date before, and this wasn’t even a date.

Before the apology fluttering in her mind could break free, he cupped her cheek and touched his mouth down on hers.

Review: Last Chance Proposal by Barbara DeLeo

Last Chance ProposalLast Chance Proposal by Barbara DeLeo

Blurb:

A wife he needs. The woman he desires.

Cy Hathaway needs a wife, fast, to win custody of his son, Jonty. He returns home to discover the childhood sweetheart he once left behind has become a vibrant, beautiful woman. Even though wanting to sweep her off her feet wasn’t part of the plan…

For Ellie, Cy’s sudden reappearance awakens a flood of memories—and resentments for the way he’d abandoned her all those years ago. But she has a life now, a career. She can’t simply drop everything and get hitched, even if the sight of him still makes her heart race.

But after Ellie meets his little boy, she can’t refuse. Certain she has a grip on her old feelings for Cy, she agrees to marry her first love until he gains custody. But when did helping out a friend become something with the capacity to hijack her heart?

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Review:

Ultimately I enjoyed Last Chance Proposal, though at times the main characters drove me crazy. I understand where Cy is coming from–his son is autistic, he’s involved in a custody battle with his in-laws–he absolutely needs to keep his priorities straight, and priority number one needs to be Jonty. However, he spent much of the novel being grossly unfair to Ellie. He gave off mixed signals left and right, totally reversing things he had done the day before once he removed himself from temptation and had time to think things over again.

Frustrating. I’m not sure I would have stuck with him. Though she did a fair bit of waffling herself–she had definite reasons for insisting she’d never have children, but it really felt like she could have faced reality on that point sooner. She eventually got there, though, and with less mental drama than Cy.

All’s well that ends well, however, and there is a satisfyingly good ending here. Before you get to that point, the relationship between autistic Jonty and Ellie’s nephew Louis is one of my favorite parts of the book. Louis has got to be one of the sweetest preteens on the planet, and the way Jonty opens up to him really makes the novel.

This was my first book by Ms. DeLeo, but it won’t be my last. This was a sweet, feel-good romance with a slight holiday feel (the “moment of truth” event is on New Year’s).
