I’ve read–and loved–several of Robin’s contemporary romances. I met her at the Baltimore Book Festival last fall, and really enjoyed listening to her speak on several panels there. She’s a lot of fun to follow on FB (two words: Man Wars. 😉 ) too. In short, I’m a fan, and was totally psyched to find out that her next book was going to be a paranormal romance. I jumped at the chance to read it.

It absolutely did not disappoint!

Robin’s trademark humor and flair for writing flawed yet lovable characters really shine here.

“So, Cici. We haven’t spoken since 1943 and while I’d love to think you’re here because you’re finally going to pay the fifty dollars you owe me, I’m not holding my breath.” He paused and shrugged at his own comment. “If I actually breathed, that is.”

It wouldn’t have surprised her to hear a bell ring, signaling the beginning of round one.

“You cheated. I don’t owe you the money,” she said, surprised at the decades-old indignation burning in her belly.

“The deal was that you would pay me if I had to save your ass.”

“I didn’t need your help. I was fine, but you had to sweep in and be the hero.” She crossed her arms and her legs, knowing how childish she looked. Deacon had the ability to make her lose her well-honed cool. And she didn’t know if it was the loss of control or the fact that she enjoyed it that bothered her more.

“You were surrounded by Nazis. You were not fine.”

“It wasn’t the first time, and I had a plan that you screwed up with your theatrics. I’m not paying you.”

“Wait? Nazis?” Andy asked, looking back and forth between them as though he was watching a tennis match. “How long have you two been friends?”

“We aren’t friends.” They answered him in unison, the moment almost comical with the way their gazes crashed into each other across the room.

“Okay…so, how long have you two not been friends?”

“Two hundred and thirty-nine years,” Cici said.

“Two hundred and forty.” Deacon interrupted her.

Yes! A lovers-with-a-history story, and since they’re vampires, it’s a loooong history…one that begins in colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, one of my favorite places/time periods ever. Bonus!

Robin’s come up with an interesting world here–vamps, weres, fey, and other supernaturals (known as “Others”) have been outed, and some parts of the rest of the world have taken the news better than others. One group in particular, the Fellowship of Adam’s Race, has been stalking Others and those that aid and protect them for centuries. Certain other groups, on the other hand–law enforcement, the military, and intelligence organizations in particular–have been utilizing the Others’ supernatural abilities for just as long.

Cici and Deacon’s shared history contains a long list of somewhat reluctant collaborations as they work together to save mankind through the most trying times that history has to offer. We only get a hint of much of it here, but one gets the feeling that those earlier exploits would make quite the story.

Now, though, Cici needs Deacon’s help, as unwilling as she is to ask for it. He’s determined to honor his promise to her long-dead father and keep her safe, even though he really doesn’t approve of her business, a matchmaking service for humans and Others. In exchange for his services, he demands a rather unusual payment, one she isn’t exactly willing to pay. Or is she? Her traitorous libido appears to have quite the opposite opinion in the matter.

What follows are some pretty steamy scenes, paired with some edge-of-your-seat suspense, written as only Robin Covington can. Toward the end she even ratcheted up the drama, darn her–she nearly had me in tears! I believe I was literally incapable of putting my ereader down at one point; thank goodness it was the weekend and I didn’t have to. Just when all seemed almost lost, she pulled out the ace she’d been hiding up her sleeve and…well, you’ll just have to read it yourself.

Trust me. Totally worth it.

Fingers crossed that Ms. Covington’s going to be writing more from this universe, either with these characters or new ones. Either way it’ll be a win-win.

4 stars/ A- rating.

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

J Speaks (L&J #1.5)

“I came here, baby, to tell you I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you.”  He inhaled sharply, but said in an even voice. “And I can’t lose you before the greatest fight I will ever wage.”

Redemption. Could I absolve him? I lay in a hospital bed for two weeks. All of it at his hands. I’d been marred, though the scar on my skin was not the worst damage. It was a reminder of the scar I’d carried inside. Could he erase that scar? Could he heal a wound one could not see?

There was silence, deafening silence. I tried to keep it together. I used every ounce of energy I had to keep the fire at a low flame, but it blazed through me. He would’ve shot my kid, and I couldn’t let that happen. These kids, they’d become my lifeline. My light.

“Without those kids, I’m just as dark as you.” I said emotionlessly, empty. These last few weeks of pretending during the day, only to come home and sob until sleep graced me was maddening. “I’ve got nothing left to give you, J. Nothing.”

I hung my head, losing the fight with the tears that had been threatening to erupt since J arrived. “I can’t be your light, when I have none.”

We lay on the floor, two damaged bodies searching for the light. J pulled my head into his hands, bringing us face to face. I could feel his breath against my lips. “You were a comet that bust into my life out of nowhere,”  he whispered. “I begged for you. On my knees in the dirt, I groveled to the sky to bring me light. And there you were, at Eight-Oh-Eight, staring up at me, even though I knew you couldn’t see through the window. I saw you, though. Elle, I saw you long before you saw me.”

“How could I love a killer?”

How much pain was worth loving this man?

“Please, baby. Please. I need you. I love you. I can’t go into this without knowing you’ll be here when I return.”

“I’m not sure what to say. I want to tell you I’ll wait. That I’ll be here, waiting like a good girl for you. I want to because I love you. Fuck, I love you.” I turned, finally ready to look him in the eye. “I don’t know where I’ll be. I can’t tell you that. But I can tell you that I love the fuck out of you, and no matter how much I try to stop,” I paused. Fuck this mother fucker. Fuck! God, why was he doing this to me? Angry tears, sad tears, hopeless tears, tears filled with longing fell from my eyes. J caught then with his thumb, but there were too many. They ran over his fingers like a waterfall.

“Fuck, J. I don’t want you to die.”

He pulled me to him, and I inhaled his scent. I’d never be able to smell Acqua di mother fucking Gio again and not think of him. Today it was mixed with the smell of exhaust, like he’d been riding around all night. For what felt like the gazillionth time, I crumbled into his arms. How did two times come to be a number exponentially higher?

“I don’t want to die, baby. I want to fall asleep next to you. I want to wake up next to you. I’m fighting this war for you. To be with you.”

Author Bio:

Emily is a Midwestern Gal, but could be anywhere as you read this. She gypsy’s the country, as well as south of the border. Adventure feeds her soul, and offers great writing material.

She loves kids and working with kids, but can only handle caring for four-legged furry friends. A crazy dog and laid back cat have trained her to be their partner in life.

Vices include Swedish Fish, ignoring chores in favor of reading, and caring too much for people in her life. She chose to write this bio in third person as she is an Aries, and found writing in first person ended up with her writing an excessively long life story.

Aries like to talk about themselves. It is something Emily is working on being more mindful of.

An Interview with Amber Hart, Edgy YA author of Before You

I’m so excited to have author Amber Hart here today, talking about writing and her latest book, BEFORE YOU, due out July 29!

Welcome, Amber!

What 5 things should readers know about you?

I’m a:

1. Chocolate lover.
2. Reading addict.
3. Animal enthusiast.
4. Caffeine junkie.
5. Writer of edgy, raw characters.

Tell us all about your main characters—who are they? What makes them tick? What one thing would they need to have with them if stranded on a desert isle?

Faith, a girl who follows the rules but hides a dark secret, and Diego, a troubled, tattooed Latino, are the main characters in BEFORE YOU. Faith is guarded, but for a good reason. Put on a smile, act the part, and no one will know, she figures. Diego stays locked up tight, running from a past that is slowly catching up with him.

If stranded, Diego would want a weapon, probably a gun. And Faith wouldn’t need anything—she’d be thrilled to get away from the lie she calls life.

If your book were being cast as a movie, who would you want to play the main characters?

Oh, good question! I don’t even know where to start! I think at that point, I’d just be so thrilled to see it on screen that it wouldn’t matter!  🙂

LOL! Excellent answer 🙂

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I’ve been writing all my life. It started with magic and pictures in crayon, and transformed into signing with an agent a few years ago. I find inspiration all around me. In beautiful places, in situations that have touched my life personally, in people who intrigue me. Sometimes music, too.

What do you like best about being a writer?

Does wearing my pajamas all day count? Just kidding. I like all the ‘firsts’. The first phone call from an agent offering representation. The first time I found out my series sold. The first talk with my editor. All of it. I can’t wait to experience the first time my book hits shelves (July 29th!).

Wearing PJs all day totally counts! The other things you mention are probably a teensy bit more meaningful–and awesome, of course–but wearing PJs can be enjoyed DAILY. 😉

What is the most challenging part of being a writer?

I like to go, go, go, and sometimes characters are quiet. Sometimes they need time to rest and that can be frustrating. I have to accept that not all days are writing days, and that my characters will speak to me when they’re ready. Truth is, taking breaks from my book makes it more exciting when I get to dive back in. My family appreciates when I crawl out of my writing cave, too.

I can imagine 🙂

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I love the book I’m working on now! It’s the 2nd book in a New Adult series being published by Random House this October (untitled as of yet), in which a young woman travels to the exotic rainforest of Cameroon, Africa, following the death of her father, a gorilla activist, and falls for a mysterious young man who turns out to be the heir to a poaching empire.

Sounds great! We’ll have to keep an eye out for it…

What authors and/or books have inspired you?

So, so many! Currently, I’m intrigued by Sophie Jordan…her mind is beautiful. I also love Marissa Meyer’s CINDER series. I’m a huge fan of ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and have fallen for A.G. Howard’s dark, creepy retelling. Lauren Oliver always rips my heart out in the best way. I’m indebted to Lia Habel for making me fall for Zombies. And have you read CANDOR by Pam Bachorz? You should. It’s brilliant. And…and…and…I better stop here. I’ll just keep going.

LOL–I hear you! Thanks for the suggestions 🙂

What are you currently reading? What are your thoughts about it so far?

Just finished THE ARCHIVED by Victoria Schwab. What do I think? I think it’s lovely, addictive, and visually stunning. Her words, those pages, I can imagine everything. She creates this place where the dead are kept on shelves like books. The sequel, THE UNBOUND, is next on my list.

Wow–sounds amazing. I’ll have to check it out!

Please share a favorite scene from your books with our readers.

BEFORE YOU is told from alternating points of view between the two main characters, Faith and Diego. Here’s a bit in Diego’s voice:

Mami, why don’t I help you loosen up a little?”

Faith blinks, but doesn’t show any outward evidence that my words have affected her. I move close, very close. When I look down at her, she doesn’t look away.

Her eyes remind me of stained glass, bright and cutting.

“We could have a good time, you and me,” I say, mischief punctuating my voice.

“I don’t think so,” she says coldly.

I will not let her upstage me. I give her a long, slow onceover. She dresses older than she is, like she doesn’t belong in high school. I wonder what makes her so uptight.

What are you hiding, chica?

I usually don’t have to try with girls. It’s one of the very few advantages life has thrown my way.

“Oh, come on. You might like Latino if you tried it,” I say, voice low. The guys behind me laugh, egging me on.

“When you’re done with him, I’m available, mamacita,” Juan says. “I don’t mind leftovers.”

She sneers. Good. That’s progress.

“Let me take you out,” I say.

I’m not really going to take her anywhere. I just want to make a crack in her icy shield.

Why do you have a shield, anyway?

“Why?” she asks suspiciously.

Because I know it annoys you when someone else has control. “Because it would be fun,” I say, bending close to her face. “And I can promise you one thing.”

She looks cautious.

It’s a look I know well.

“What?” she asks.

That one night with me will relax you.

Girls like her love bad boys, whether they admit it or not. I imagine it’s similar to visiting a haunted mansion. Exciting, at first. One foot slips through the door, then the next. Heart hammers. Blood races. It’s a rush. A fix. Never knowing what’s around the next corner, through the closed door, beyond the shadows. Trying to find a way out. Not really wanting to leave. Wondering how close a person can come to danger before something bad happens. Looking for the moonlight at the end of the tunnel, an exit.

Sometimes there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

I can show her excitement like she’ll never experience with that boyfriend of hers.

But I don’t say any of those things. Instead I let my lips brush her ear lobe as I answer.

“That you will leave satisfied.”

Thanks so much for being here today, Amber!

Keep reading to find out a little more about this amazing YA author, and for a synopsis of BEFORE YOU. Don’t forget to add it to your Goodreads shelf!

Amber Hart grew up in Orlando, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. She now resides on the Florida coastline with family and animals including, but not limited to, bulldogs, a cat, and dragons. When unable to find a book, she can be found writing, daydreaming, or with her toes in the sand. She’s the author of BEFORE YOU, AFTER US, ECHOES, and ECHOES’ sequel (untitled as of yet). BEFORE YOU Synopsis:

Some say love is deadly. Some say love is beautiful. I say it is both.

Faith Watters spent her junior year traveling the world, studying in exquisite places, before returning to Oviedo High School. From the outside her life is picture-perfect. Captain of the dance team. Popular. Happy. Too bad it’s all a lie.

It will haunt me. It will claim me. It will shatter me. And I don’t care.

Eighteen-year-old Diego Alvarez hates his new life in the States, but staying in Cuba is not an option. Covered in tattoos and scars, Diego doesn’t stand a chance of fitting in. Nor does he want to. His only concern is staying hidden from his past—a past, which if it were to surface, would cost him everything. Including his life.

At Oviedo High School, it seems that Faith Watters and Diego Alvarez do not belong together. But fate is as tricky as it is lovely. Freedom with no restraint is what they long for. What they get is something different entirely.

Love—it will ruin you and save you, both.

Due out July 29!

New Release Spotlight with Giveaway: Upside Down by Lia Riley (Off the Map #1)

Out this summer–read an excerpt, and enter to win some fun swag!

Upside Down by Lia Riley
(Off the Map #1)
Published by: Grand Central
Publication date: August 5th 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance
If You Never Get Lost, You’ll Never Be FoundTwenty-one-year-old Natalia Stolfi is saying goodbye to painful memories—and turning her life upside down with a trip to the land down under. For the next six months, she’ll pretend to be a carefree exchange student. Everything is going to plan until she meets a surly surfer with hypnotic green eyes, and the troubling ability to see straight through her act.

Bran Lockhart is having the worst year on record. After the girl of his dreams turned into a nightmare, he slunk back to Melbourne to piece his life together. Yet no amount of disappointment could blind him to the pretty California girl who gets past all his defenses. He’s never wanted anyone the way he wants Talia. A single semester abroad won’t  cover something this serious. But when Bran gets a stark reminder of why he stopped believing in love, he and Talia must decide if what they have is once-in-a-lifetime . . . or if there’s a plane to California with her name on it.

“You’re doing fine, Talia,” Bran says. “Now, I’m going to need you to release your left hand, reach a few inches and grab the next hold.”

I grit my teeth. The way he talks, you’d think I’m scaling Everest or at least Mount Kilamanjaro. Instead—

“Excuse us, we’ll be by in a tic. That’s the way, Andy, right around the lady.”

I’m the lady. Andy, a kid who doesn’t look a day over seven, scrambles past in a flurry of Spiderman shoes and gap-toothed smiles. His parents bring up the rear, beaming at their agile little monkey with obvious pride.

And they aren’t the first group to go by.

Five Swedish women, another young couple and a guy in his mid-seventies shot past me during the last quarter hour.

The top is so close I can taste it. Bran is everything encouraging, but below is a twenty-foot drop. Not enough to kill, unless I fall with some sort of suicidal intent, still, what if–

“Take my hand.” Bran eases toward me.

“I’m serious. No.”

This is it. I can’t do it. I can’t let go.

He won’t admit the truth while I verge on full-scale panic attack mode, but there’s no doubt I’m giving him cause to lose interest. I’m spelling out the reasons I suck in bold, capital letters.

“Take a deep breath,” he orders.

“Breath taken.”

“Another one.”

“I want your hand in mine, no bullshit. You’ll be safe. I’m going to keep you safe. Trust me.”

Somehow I do it. I lace my fingers with his and he helps me gain a few more feet. My head clears the boulder and there’s the steel marker identifying the summit. Holy shit, I’m going to get there.

A last step and we’re at the top. The kid in the Spiderman shoes munches a vegemite sandwich. I want to scoop him into a big fat squeeze except his parents would likely object. Instead, I tackle hug Bran.

“I knew you’d do it.” He buries his face in my hair.

“I didn’t.”

He turns me around to see the view and hugs my waist. “Your place is here, Captain, in the sun,” he whispers. “Don’t ever forget it.”

Lia Riley writes offbeat New Adult Romance. After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, she scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. Her very patient husband doesn’t mind. Much. When not torturing heroes (because c’mon, who doesn’t love a good tortured hero?), Lia herds unruly chickens, camps, beach combs, daydreams about as-of-yet unwritten books, wades through a mile-high TBR pile and schemes yet another trip. Right now, Icelandic hot springs and Scottish castles sound mighty fine.

Good morning! Another gorgeous cover reveal…

Written On Her Heart by Paige Rion

To escape the ensuing media whirlwind after scandalous events in his novels were revealed to be true, big-time author Ford Delaney relocates to Callaway Cove. When 21-year-old budding writer, Andi Callaway, returns home for college break, she discovers her literary idol – Ford Delaney, a world famous novelist – has taken refuge in her tiny hometown.Andi determines to win a job as his assistant – but being hired by the handsome, reclusive author means competing with her friends for the job and ignoring the wishes of her longtime boyfriend. As romantic sparks begin to fly between Andi and Ford, the heat they generate will either forge a powerful, enduring love or threaten everything she holds dear.

This is the part where I’m supposed to tell you about myself. I could tell you that I am a romance writer. Or that I have my first novel coming out in 2014. Sure, I could tell you those kind of things. Like where I’m from, when I was born, etc. etc.  But I’m not particularly fond of traditional bio’s, so I’ll list some fun, or at the very least, interesting, facts about myself instead.

  • I like pumpkin spice lattes in the fall, Halloween, and snowflakes.
  • Early morning is my favorite time of day, and I prefer a good sunrise over a sunset.
  • My mother’s my best friend (and I’m not afraid to admit it)!
  • I’m a chocolate fanatic, coffee fanatic, and wine fanatic — overall fanatic.
  • For me, writing is a process that cannot be rushed.
  • I dream of having a point in my life, where I take three months and do nothing but travel to exotic places.
  • My family is the most important thing to me.
  • I love gardening and tend to have a green thumb outdoors , but will kill any indoor plant almost instantaneously.
  • I used to dream of opening a little bakery/coffee shop, where I’d sell books.
  • I used to be anti-Kindle until I got my first one, then I ate my own words because I could never go without one again.
  • My favorite holiday is Easter. Oh, and I’m a big sucker for Valentines Day. I always have been.
  • My favorite color is that particular light green color used for baby clothes. What is it? Sea-foam?
  • I have an obsessive personality, ( I got it honest. Thanks Mom.) but, thank heavens, it seems to be limited only to my work.

New Release Spotlight and Giveaway: Perfectly Broken by Prescott Lane

Start your day off right–with a new release and giveaway!

Perfectly Broken by Prescott Lane
Publication date: March 2014
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Even after years of trauma therapy, Peyton still believes she’s broken.  She has little desire to date or show off her natural beauty, content simply to hang out with her best friends and run her pie shop in New Orleans.  But her world turns upside-down when a handsome architect and self-confessed player shows up in her shop and thinks she’s perfect, much more than the usual hook-up.  While Peyton does her best to resist his charms, believing she could never be enough for him, she can’t deny the obvious heat between them.

With Reed determined to have her, Peyton must decide whether to continue to hide behind her apron and baggy clothes or take a chance and share her scars with Reed, a man with a playboy reputation and scars of his own — a dark past he can’t possibly share with Peyton, not after learning the horrors she’s endured.  But if they can find a way to trust each other, and themselves, they just might be able to heal, to save each other, to live perfectly broken together.

Reed woke up in a sweat, breathing heavily, as if from a bad dream.  But it hadn’t been bad at all.  He’d been dancing with Peyton in Audubon Park, feeling her soft skin, tasting her lips, smelling the vanilla.  He cursed the dream was over then looked outside, the moon shining brightly through his bedroom window.  He thought about calling her and reached for his phone.  He saw it was the middle of the night, so any call would have to wait.

Then he decided he wasn’t going to call her at all.  He’d be seeing her tonight at the engagement party — for the first time in 36 days.  He flipped through the photos of her on his phone, landing on the one he loved the most, her resting her head on his chest, a small smile on her pink lips.  He’d give anything to go back to that moment, to have her in his arms again.  It seemed as if Griffin had held her more than he ever did.  He threw the covers over his head, trying to get back to sleep and desperate to return to his dream.

But thoughts of tonight, thoughts of Peyton, kept him awake.  Over several weeks, he’d tried to let her go but just couldn’t.  Despite all the boxing, all the exercise, trying to bury himself in work, he wasn’t strong enough.  He’d fallen in love – the first time ever – and now couldn’t recover.  She’d been his soft spot, and he’d hit concrete without her, shattering his heart.  He had no idea if she was as tortured, conflicted, unsettled as he was, or whether she’d just moved on without a second thought.  He hoped she felt like he did.  But she sure found a roommate pretty damn quick!  His talk with Quinn helped put some things in perspective, but he still didn’t trust Griffin living in Peyton’s house, just a few doors down from her bedroom.

His mind flashed to the possibility that she was bringing some guy tonight.  Griffin?  And he wasn’t going to ask Bret if he knew whether she was.  That would be pathetic and weak.  He needed to be calm and strong, though not too strong.  He couldn’t just wail on some new guy tonight, not even Griffin — no matter what he saw, even if her lips, God forbid, touched Griffin’s or some other man’s.

He gripped his pillow tightly then threw the covers off his head, the moonlight hitting him again, shining down an unmistakable truth, one he already knew all too well.  He needed Peyton.  He needed her to love him.

New Release Review and Giveaway: Declaration by Rachael Wade (Preservation series)

For lovers of this series, Carter’s book is finally here!

Preservation Series by Rachael Wade
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance
Book 1: Preservation
5.5"X8.5" Post Card Template
Synopsis book 1:

Fear is sabotage’s sweetest weapon.

Kate has no time for meaningless romantic charades, and definitely no time for hot college professors who are full of themselves and smitten with her. Constantly battling eviction notices, tuition she can’t afford, and a sick, dependent mother, the last thing she needs is to be distracted with someone else’s complicated baggage.

When she stumbles into Ryan Campbell’s creative writing class, he is only “Mr. Campbell” to her, until Ryan finds himself captivated by her writing and she is forced to face their mutual attraction. His cocky know-it-all syndrome is enough to send her running in the other direction, and his posse of female admirers and playboy reputation are enough to squander any odds in her favor.

But underneath Ryan’s abrasive facade is something to behold, and she can’t stay away for long. Ryan and Kate must decide who they’re willing to become and fight against their former selves if they want to make things work. That’s if academia, vicious vixens, old skeletons, and their own mastery at self-destruction don’t pummel their efforts first.

Book 2: Reservation
5.5"X8.5" Post Card Template
Synopsis book 2:

A sequel to the Amazon bestselling romance, Preservation, told from Ryan’s point of view.

Old Habits Die Hard.

Ryan Campbell is not only leaving his title of Professor behind to move on to bigger and better things at Simon and Warden Publishing, he’s also become Seattle’s rising literary star. Sitting on the overwhelming cusp of newfound fame, he learns soon enough that being popular has its downside.

Attracted to the buzz surrounding his new career, former lovers begin to creep back into his life, and potential ones emerge with enticing advances. While he works to juggle reserved, yet stressful, wedding plans with Kate and his new public image, he has enough to manage without worrying about Carter and Dean—Kate’s loveable albeit eccentric friends—and their latest shenanigans.

Surrounded by a lifestyle that includes temptation at every turn, Ryan finds himself immersed in a world full of scandal and lies, where his oldest weaknesses thrive and his ghosts return to haunt him. Questioning whether his life with Kate is his best path, he must discover if he’s still capable of being the man he aspired to be when she first became his, or if happily ever after is only an illusion.

Book 3: Declaration

5.5"X8.5" Post Card Template

Synopsis book 3:

Featuring characters from Love and Relativity.

Carter Montgomery spent most of his life blending in, and he liked it that way. It was always better to be seen, not heard. And while a theatric streak and friendly demeanor might have fooled most people, he knew the truth—he was the shy one. The quiet kid most people forgot about. Some might have considered that a bad thing, but those people all wanted to be in the spotlight.

The only place Carter didn’t mind attention was on stage, with The Hellions. Once content in his comfort zone in Seattle, Washington, he only knew three things: confrontation was to be avoided, keeping the peace was priority, and the moment he lost Kate Parker to Professor Ryan Campbell, he had no clue what to do with his life. Playing gigs, working at Pike Place Market, and watching BBC after the love of his life sailed off into the sunset just wasn’t going to cut it anymore.

Desperate to escape his rut, he takes a cue from Kate and chooses a random place to relocate—a small island across the country, where no one knows his name and memories of unrequited love aren’t found at every turn. Just when he thinks he’s found the perfect place to unwind and sink back into the shadows, in bursts Whitney Sinclair, a saucy firecracker who loves life and refuses to settle for second best. Full of contagious energy, she dares him to be brave, convincing him that it might finally be time to tell the world what he wants.

It might be time to make a declaration.

I haven’t read the first two books in the series, but Carter’s story seemed like a good place to start–especially since he’s already left Kate, Ryan, and the Pacific Northwest behind when the book begins. He definitely gives us enough of his backstory in this novel so that if you haven’t read the first two books, you’re definitely not lost.

loved Carter’s character. His unapologetic nerdy geekdom, love of all things British (he has Downton Abbey on DVD! How many romance heroes can say the same? Not nearly enough!), his scruffy-musician persona, and his desperate case of unrequited love make it impossible not to love him.

Whitney too is  a highly relateable character–she’s been burned in love before, and like Carter, often has felt as if she’s invisible. She’s working two jobs right now to get by, but dreams of opening a bookstore some day (A bookstore! Dream heroine, right?). She’s also every nerdy boy’s secret dream–not only is she a hotel maid, she’s got her own “French maid” uniform to go with the job–a fact Carter fully appreciates.

Both Carter and Whitney are trying to find their way in the novel–though of course we see far more of Carter’s struggle, since the entire novel is seen through his eyes. They move into a relationship in a roundabout kind of way, each aware of the other on the fringes of their lives before they decide to do anything about it. Once they come together, though, it’s explosive–and fun.

The path to their HEA of course isn’t smooth–they each make some missteps along the way–but it is satisfying and believable. A “seven years later” epilogue at the end wraps up the series nicely, giving readers a glimpse into the future for all the major characters of the series. All in all, this was an enjoyable way to pass the time.

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Guest Post: Author Lisa Burstein–“Writing is writing, regardless of genre…”

I’m thrilled to have Entangled Embrace author Lisa Burstein here today, talking about the problems with today’s writing programs and how her latest book, Sneaking Candy, is a call to arms for writers and readers everywhere…

You go, girl!

By now most of you have probably seen the disgusting words of writing Professor David Gilmour, “I’m not interested in teaching books by women. What I teach is guys. Serious heterosexual guys. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Chekhov, Tolstoy. Real guy-guys. Henry Miller. Philip Roth.”

See the full story here.

His word are sexist, racist and unbelievable to anyone living in the 20th century, but they are not an exception when it comes to the world of writing programs.

I can only speak from my experience. I entered an MFA program 12 years ago, ready to become the next Margaret Atwood (who by the way is a prolific, bestselling, award winning Canadian author like Mr. Gilmour), but what I found when I arrived was not a place that read her books, or taught her.

The break out of male to female professors in my program was as follows: Fiction: 2 male full-time, 1 female adjunct; Non-Fiction: 1 female full-time; Poetry: 1 male full time, 1 female full time and 1 male adjunct.

Pretty even as things in writing go, but notice 2 male full-time for fiction. Those men were my main professors. They were the ones who were going to teach me how to write as a woman and certainly they were equipped to teach writing, but not that. As a result, my literature classes were absolutely male heavy. There were females sprinkled in: Joyce Carol Oates, Flannery O’Connor, Alice Munro but mostly we read men: Phillip Roth, Vladamir Nabokov, Chekhov, Michael Chabon, Chaucer, Homer, etc.) (You’ll notice they were also all white, but this blog post isn’t really about that.)

I never really thought about it at the time. I was so excited to be in a writing program (you have to be accepted based on talent) that I never questioned if I was getting an equal education. Additionally, the sexism in my program was never as overt and possibly my professors didn’t even realize it. They were men who both went to Iowa, which if you know about the history of writing programs was one of the first and a boy’s club from way back.

I know that has changed now and a lot of amazing women authors are coming out of Iowa, but I would guess that they still read far more men in their literature classes. It’s what the old guard want.

So what does what David Gilmour said have to do with me, aside from having in a small way experienced it?

A year ago, I started writing a book titled Sneaking Candy about a twenty-something woman in a graduate writing program who writes erotic romance under a pseudonym because she is afraid she will not be taken seriously by her peers. I thought at first it would be a book about a woman trying to find her authorial voice, her sexual voice and finding love in the unlikeliest place, but as I wrote it turned into something much different.

I realized it was my story in a lot of ways. Even having left my program, my peers from my MFA days do not consider me a legitimate author. They don’t say it, but I can feel it. I’ve never been invited back to read or talk about my publishing experience, even though I am one of the 10% or less from the program that have published novels. Truly, I am Candice. I don’t write erotic romance, but all my books have been published by a “romance” publisher and as such their literary value is lessened.

What I was hoping to show in Sneaking Candy, apart from telling a funny, raunchy story was that writing is writing regardless of genre. MFA programs tend to breed genre snobs (I was one) and I think that’s wrong. I think if you have a story to tell people should be able to read it regardless of who published it, or if you published it yourself.

Without even meaning to, I could feel my book turning into the battle cry I believe many romance writers and would-be writers feel.

I am not less important or valid than you for writing stories about love and sex.

I think this applies to YA writers too.

Stories for teens and about teens are no less valid than stories for and about adults.

I hope Sneaking Candy will make professors like Mr. Gilmour might see that there is a problem in what and who is taught in writing programs; that a change needs to come, but probably not because I am a woman who writes romance and YA.

All I ever wanted was to make a name for myself as Candice Salinas, creative writing grad student at the University of Miami. Of course, secretly I already have made a name for myself: as Candy Sloane, self-published erotic romance writer. Though thrilled that my books are selling and I have actual fans, if anyone at UM found out, I could lose my scholarship…and the respect of my faculty advisor, grade-A-asshole Professor Dylan.

Enter James Walker, super-hot local barista and—surprise!—my student. Even though I know a relationship is totally off-limits, I can’t stop myself from sneaking around with James, taking a few cues from my own erotic writing…if you catch my drift. Candy’s showing her stripes for the first time in my real life, and I’ve never had so much fun. But when the sugar high fades, can my secrets stay under wraps?

Lisa’s latest book, Sneaking Candy, is on sale right now for just 99-cents. Pick up your copy now!

November, 1864

Tonight was the last night.

Dahlia pulled on her jacket and stepped into the darkness. The air nipped at her face and fingers, but she pushed on, knowing this would be the last night she knelt before the well.

The moon hovered low on the horizon, giving just enough light to guide her across the still property. Winter was close. Color had fallen from the trees and the sun was setting earlier every day. Travel would be harder now, harsher, making the possibility of finding a new home more difficult. Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough to dissuade Dahlia from leaving. The only thing that worried her now was how the Stocktons would treat her servant mother after she had gone. Mr. Stockton had passed last month, which meant Charles, with some guidance from his mother, was now in charge of the estate.

Dahlia stopped in front of the well and gazed up to the mansion like she had every night for weeks. Noticing a dim light in the farthest of the upstairs windows, she crouched low to hide. It was Charles’ office, not his and Sarah’s bedroom. Unfortunately, Dahlia knew which bedroom was theirs most of all─it could’ve been hers. In the weeks following the wedding, she’d been called upon to help clean their house. Their room. Every time she had to change the blankets on their bed, it made her physically ill. Thoughts of their lovemaking charged her mind. They ripped at her heart every day and haunted her every night. But they also fueled her anger, and kept her coming back to the well.

Seeing no movement within the lit room, she decided to continue. She stayed low and twisted sideways to keep an eye on the window. Digging into her pocket, she removed a thin iron pick. Its rounded tip had been worn close to its base. Her palm gripped the cool metal and its grooves settled into the cuts already etched in her skin. She located the final area of stone then started to scratch.

Hours later, after the last letter was done and her hands were raw and bloody once more, Dahlia read the words aloud and rubbed her hands over the stones. She thought of him as she spoke. Thought of him lying in her bed. His lips caressing hers. His promise for forever.

This was her promise to him and she was certain it would last longer than his had.

It would surpass their lifetimes.

Letting the pick fall to the ground, Dahlia turned toward the house again. A silhouette stood at the window, darkened by the dim light at its back.

It was him.

She stared at his figure, knowing he was looking at her too. For one weakened moment, she longed to see his green eyes, taste the breath of his kiss, and feel the comfort of his arms again. Warm tears rolled over her icy cheeks, waking her from the spell.

He’d made his choice.

It wasn’t her.

So she walked away from the well, leaving the darkened figure behind and never looking back.
