New Release Review: Goddess Born by Kari Edgren (Goddess Born #1)

Finished! This series is off to an interesting start 🙂

Goddess Born
by Kari Edgren

Goddess Born kept me riveted. It pushed so many of my gotta-read-this buttons–it’s a historical set in the colonial period–yay! There’s a supernatural angle, AND it’s based on mythology–double fun! There are Quakers (what can I say, I find them fascinating. I wouldn’t want to be one, but they’re just so interesting to read about–and it’s nice to read a colonial-period novel that doesn’t feature Puritans…) Plus, there’s the possibility that a character might be accused of witchcraft, which always makes for an interesting–in a thank-god-it’s-not-me kind of way–twist.

It didn’t disappoint.

I really liked both Selah and Henry–great characters! Selah, a descendant of the Celtic goddess Brigid, has the power to heal as her mother and grandmother did before her. She can’t reveal the extent of her abilities for fear of being accused of witchcraft, but everyone in the village knows that she’s the go-to person when someone is hurt or sick. The rules of her ability say that if someone asks for her help, she has to give it–but her sense of self-preservation says that sometimes she has to lie about the extent of what she’s actually done–curing acute lockjaw becomes pulling a rotten tooth, for example. She’s spent her life hiding the truth of who she is from everyone but her family, so she’s always known that when the time comes for her to marry her intended has to be a member of her extended family.

Unfortunately, her fiance–a cousin from Ireland–dies during his Atlantic voyage. Slight problem.

Enter Henry, who was on the same ship–as an indentured servant. Selah, still reeling from the double news of her cousin’s and her father’s deaths, finds herself drawn to the tall, handsome man. When she realizes that the less-than-savory gentleman who’s bidding for his contract probably has a disturbing ulterior motive, she hatches a desperate plan–purchase his indenture herself, and convince him to “marry” her.

Yes. A colonial historical set in a Quaker town with a fake marriage. Awesome with a side of awesome sauce.

Plus, naturally Henry’s got a protective streak a mile wide, is hiding a doozy of a secret, and has mad sword fighting skills. Really, there’s not much more we could ask for here. (Except to see him a little more in the book–he’s fairly absent for large portions. But I’ve got high hopes for him to play a bigger part in the other two books in the series…)

There were a few niggling little issues–for one, I’m not sure they had “sofas” in colonial Pennsylvania. That detail, coupled with a smattering phrases that seemed far too modern, gave me a moment’s pause, but didn’t really detract from my enjoyment of the story. Selah was very quick to make assumptions about Henry and what his reaction to things would be–without actually giving Henry a chance to react first. That also bothered me, though it’s not outside the norm behavior for an eighteen-year old; it’s just frustrating to read. Fortunately, Henry was perfectly capable of standing up for himself and making her listen to him when necessary.

The story isn’t complete at the book’s end, but it’s really a cliffhanger either. There’s a “content at the moment and hopeful for the future” vibe here, and book two looks to be going in a very interesting direction. It’ll definitely be going on my TBR!

New Release Review and Giveaway: His Billion Dollar Baby by Lea Nolan

Absolutely. Fabulous. Cover!

His Billion Dollar Baby
Lea Nolan

Can her love melt this CEO’s heart?

No-nonsense physical therapist Gwen Radley has scraped for everything she has, so she surprises even herself when she gives into the advances of a sexy ex-patient the night before he returns to Afghanistan. Then she learns she’s pregnant, just as the news arrives that her soldier has died.

Grieving over his brother’s death, billionaire Carter Anderson questions Gwen’s motives when he accidentally learns about her pregnancy. In his experience, women can’t be trusted, so he doubts Gwen’s insistence she has not interest in his family empire – especially after she moves in with his mother. When her therapy expertise has them collaborating on a lucrative business project, Carter sees her in a new light. But his suspicions persist, leading them both to wonder if he will ever embrace his brother’s baby – or the love that’s blooming between them.

This book has a lot going for it–the premise has promise, the characters have some depth, and did I mention the cover? Such lovely abs. 🙂 The idea of falling for the brother of your deceased baby daddy–especially when your relationship with that brother starts off so totally wrong-footedly and you seem to have nothing whatsoever in common with him–soooo much potential for delicious drama! (I was actually glad that Gwen and Ben didn’t have a closer relationship, because that that much drama would have put it over the top. Pregnancy hormones + survivor guilt + falling for someone new and moving on so soon after guilt = total overload. I think Ms. Nolan made the right choice here having her pregnancy be the result of a single uncharacteristic night for the two of them.)

Gwen is a really strong character. She is a self-made woman, rising above her foster system background and making a solid life for herself. I loved how she is so devoted to helping others and that she really knows her job (physical therapy, with an emphasis on military wounded) well. She is determined to raise her baby herself, yet still manages to accept help when she really needs it with grace. I liked her a lot.

Carter is a bit tougher to love at times–a disastrous first marriage has left him bitter, and he tends to see all women as variations of his ex. He is also naturally suspicious of anyone who might be out to take advantage of his family’s wealth and good nature. His attitude is understandable, up to a point–but once he let his guard down and opened himself up to a real relationship with Gwen, it felt as if he was much too quick to do another 180 degree turn and once again see only self-serving motives behind all of her actions. In fact, the entire argument on which their relationship climax hinged had a forced feel to it. I found myself going back and re-reading their conversation more than once because their responses to each other’s comments just didn’t feel genuine–their reactions seemed so out of whack with what had actually been done and said that reading that scene gave me a “wait–what the heck just happened here?” feeling afterwards.

I’ll give Carter this, though–he does grovel with style. Tiny baby shoes will melt this particular heart every time. 🙂

Overall, this novel made my two-hour wait at BWI a lot more enjoyable than it otherwise might have been. I’ll definitely be interested to see more from this author in the future as she continues to develop her contemporary romance-writing muscles.

As Bad As She Wants to Be: Avery Flynn, Author of This Year’s Black, Dishes About Chicks Who Kick You-Know-What

Love badass chicks? So does Avery Flynn!

As Bad As She Wants To Be

All hail the badass chicks. The ones who kick ass, take names and give as good as they get. I love ‘em. They’re the hookers with a heart of gold in the Westerns. The avengers of the innocent in urban fantasy. The left hook of justice in graphic novels. And, of course, the righters of wrongs in romantic suspense. Basically badass chicks rock and here are five of my favorites from the movies.

5. Lara Croft, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

Yes, her proportions are waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of whack in the video game and to an extent were messed with for the movie and its poster but you can’t deny that Lara has agency. Brains, skills and power, she’s got the trifecta of badassery.

4. O-Ren Ishii, Kill Bill Volume 2

When a woman is so badass she can behead a Yakuza boss for being a jerk about her mixed heritage without a blink of an eye …well …you kinda gotta love her even if she is a bad guy.

3. Selene, Underworld

Are the Underworld movies good? ….. *crickets* …. But Selene is awesome. She’s a vampire poured into black latex who is on a mission to find the truth and any vampire or lycan who gets in her way should be terrified because she doesn’t lose.

2. Sarah Conner, Terminator II

Forget the confused waif in Terminator. By the time we get to the second installment, Sarah is all mama bear determined to protect her cub. Does she take it a little far? Well …really how far is too far when the fate of the world rests on your ability to keep your kid alive?

  1. Ellen Ripley, Aliens

No one beats Ripley. No. One. This movie starts slow but once it gets going, there is no doubt that Ripley will come out on top parasitic alien or not.

This Year’s Black
by Avery Flynn

“Incredible writing with witty humor and scorching sex scenes. This Year’s Black belongs at the top of everyone’s TBR list.”– New York Times bestselling author, Gina L. Maxwell

A fighter since birth, Allegra “Ryder” Falcon would rather trade in her all-black wardrobe for head-to-toe hot pink than let anyone ever see the cracks in her tough exterior. But one night with a stranger changes everything.

Devin Harris may have given up his MMA fighting dreams for high fashion, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t always in control. So when someone embezzles millions under his watch, he isn’t going to let the private investigator working the case go it alone–even if she is the woman who blew him away in bed and then blew him off.

Just when it seems like it couldn’t get any hotter between Ryder and Devin, the case takes them to a tropical paradise where the danger increases. From the catwalk to the pineapple fields, they have to work together to track down the missing millions before the thief finds–and kills–

A Conversation with Kari Edgren, Author of Goddess Born (with a Giveaway!)

I’m reading this RIGHT NOW. (Perhaps literally, depending on when you read this.) Review coming very soon!

Goddess Reborn

Welcome, Kari; thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today!
What 5 things should readers know about you?

  1. I am an introverted extravert. I love people, but keep my own company very well.
  2. From age twelve to fifteen, I wanted desperately to be a cosmetologist. After that I wanted to be an attorney. Alas, neither panned out.
  3. I would rather travel back in time than into the future.
  4. I drink too much diet coke. If anyone is doing a study on the ill effects of splenda or aspartame, they should probably contact me.
  5. If I could spend one day with a fictional character, it would be either Scarlett O’Hara or Tyrion Lannister.

Is there such a thing as “too much Diet Coke”? Surely not! (And that same person should probably look me up too—for my Pepsi Max fixation. Though I really don’t want to know the results of that study, thankyouverymuch.)

Tell us all about your main characters—who are they? What makes them tick? Most importantly, what one thing would they need to have with them if stranded on a desert isle? 😉

Selah Kilbrid: 18 yrs. Daughter of Irish immigrants. Part human, part goddess. She is headstrong, capable, and has the ability to heal. Selah does not take well to being bossed, and often has to bite her tongue to keep from saying things that would be just plain inappropriate. She’s devoted to her friends and community.

She would like to bring her apothecary to the deserted island. Is that too big?

Of course not! This it’s a fictional desert isle, anyway–I vote no size limits.

Henry Alan Kilbrid. 19 yrs. Indentured servant from England. Agrees to stand in for Selah’s dead fiancé.  Strong, intelligent, and very capable with a sword. Actually looks forward to a good fight. Or really any type of fight. Will do anything to protect those he loves. He has a temper when provoked, but after two weeks in a ship’s brig, has learned the benefit of biding his time. Bristles under authority, which doesn’t bode with his being a servant.

As the island is deserted, he wouldn’t need a sword. So perhaps music.

Interesting 🙂

If your book were being cast as a movie, who would you want to play the main characters?

Selah Kilbrid – Nina Dobrev or Emma Watson with dark hair. Both have looks and spunk

Henry Kilbrid – Chris Hemsworth. Who else is that tall?

Nora Goodwin – Emily Blunt – A great no-nonsense Quaker

Nathan Crowley – Cillian Murphy – Those cheekbones have fanatic written all over them.

Phoebe Trumble—Amanda Seyfried – Poised and beautiful. Plays the good girl well, but I think she’s got claws tucked away somewhere.

Dirk Fletcher – Jason Isaacs – the consummate bad guy

I am 100% in favor of any movie with Chris Hemsworth in it. I would see this over and over (and only partly because I *might* be a little distracted looking at Chris’s muscles and forget to pay attention to the scenes he’s in…)

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I started writing a YA ghost story in December 2003. In April 2009, I finally finished it. Yes, that’s five and a half years. The manuscript was way too long at 155k words, but most of the delay came from having two children and my house burning down during the writing process. I started Goddess Born in May 2011 and was done by Christmas time that same year. I’m not a fast writer, so that was a huge accomplishment.

I can’t really say for sure who encouraged me to begin writing. What I can say is who encouraged me to keep writing once they knew how much I enjoyed it: my husband, younger sister, my older children and two best friends. Also, making it to the ABNA semifinals with the first manuscript was a huge encouragement to keep going.

Can I use the house burning down excuse without actually having the house burn down? No?

Reaching the semifinals is some fantastic encouragement, I have to agree!

What do you like best about being a writer? What is the most challenging part of being a writer?

Best part: My imagination is constantly in motion. With writing, I can finally move some of the characters, conversations, and places to paper.  I can also travel through space and time without having to pack a suitcase or limit my gels and liquids to 3 oz bottles.

And no swabbing of your palms or those scary body scans either (can you tell we took a plane trip this weekend?)

Challenging part: The mechanics of writing can be a real bugger for me at times. I have so many ideas, but there are days when the words are super-glued to the inside of my head and refuse to budge.

Ugh—I hear you. I would greatly appreciate any ideas for getting them unstuck…

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

Right now I’m finishing the third Goddess Born. The second is due to release this November.

Yay! Can’t wait (times two).

What authors and/or books have inspired you?

Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude as it was my very first introduction to magical realism.

Haven’t read that one yet—will have to see if it’s available on audio 🙂

What are you currently reading? What are your thoughts about it so far?

I just finished The Goldfinch. Ugh. Beautiful writing, just way too much of it. Paragraphs ran on for almost two pages at times, and all too often I felt trapped in the author’s head. Tartt is a brilliant writer. Problem is, she knows it and has subsequently tossed aside discipline. About a third of the way through, I began to feel the writing was more an expression of her talent than the actual story. Or else she’s a major control freak. I guess bottom line, I loved it and I hated it.

I can see how that would be frustrating…I’m undecided if I want to attempt that one or not. I’m leaning toward not at the moment…

If you had to “sell” this book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

A friend wrote this tweet for me.

Celtic myth & a fatal kiss. Kari Edgren’s NA Historical Fantasy GODDESS BORN.

Perfect! Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us this holiday weekend.

Thank you for hosting me today!

Kari Edgren Bio:

Kari Edgren did not dream of becoming a writer. Instead, she dreamed of everything else and was often made to stay inside during kindergarten recess to practice her letters. Despite doting parents and a decent school system, Ms. Edgren managed to make it through elementary school having completed only one book cover to cover – The Box Car Children, which she read approximately forty-seven times. Things improved during high school, but not until she read Gabrielle Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude in college, did she truly understand the power of a book.

Ms. Edgren aspires to be a Vulcan, a world-acclaimed opera singer, and two inches taller. She resides in the Pacific NW where she spends a great deal of time torturing her husband and children with strange food and random historical facts. Ms. Edgren hasn’t stopped dreaming, but has finally mastered her letters enough to put the stories on paper.

Selah Kilbrid keeps a dangerous secret: she has the power to heal.

A direct descendent of the Celtic goddess Brigid, it’s Selah’s sacred duty to help those in need. But as the last of the Goddess Born living in the New World, she learned from an early age to keep her supernatural abilities hidden. The Quaker community of Hopewell has always been welcoming, but there’s no doubt they would see her hanged if her gift was revealed.

When a prominent minister threatens to try her with witchcraft unless she becomes his wife, Selah has only one hope–that her betrothed, a distant cousin from Ireland, arrives as planned. Marrying Samuel would keep her secret safe, preserve her sacred bloodline, and protect her from being charged as a witch.

But when news of Samuel’s death reaches the Colonies, Selah is truly on her own. Terrified, she faces an impossible choice–forfeit her powers and marry the loathsome Nathan? Or find an imposter to pose as her husband and preserve her birthright?
