The newest book in the Wilde Brothers series, featuring football star Jake Wilde, the youngest of the Wilde brothers.

Jake Wilde has two loves, but neither is going his way.

Jake Wilde, the youngest of the Wilde brothers, has it all. He’s a pro football star with the woman of his dreams by his side…or so he thought.

In a desperate attempt to keep the woman he loves, he asks her to marry him. The last thing Jake Wilde expects is for her to turn him down and walk out the door at the same time that his football team decides to trade him.

Chris Jeger, a legal assistant and part-time cheerleader for the Cardinals, has been waiting for true love. When she overhears Jake Wilde making a personal plea to some woman on the phone, she can see he’s heading down the road to disaster. Instead of walking away, she steps in to offer him advice so he doesn’t turn his life upside down the same way she once did.

Their friendship develops, and one night their emotions collide–but when someone unexpected suddenly knocks on his door, Jake learns that sometimes, what you wish for isn’t what you really want.

As real life interferes with her hopes and dreams, will Chris once again be brokenhearted, left on the outside looking in?

Five Careers Suzan Butler, Author of SCORING HIS HEART (Texas Highlanders #3) Wanted as a Kid (plus a giveaway!)

Seriously, this was MY list. Maybe Suzan and I were separated at birth?

Five careers I wanted as a kid

Strangely enough, I did not want to be a writer when I was a kid. I’ve wanted to do everything at one point in time or another, but writing as a career wasn’t ever something I thought people did. Sure, I saw the books hit the shelves, but back in the pre-internet days, no one ever saw authors, not unless they were huge, like Stephen King or Nora Roberts. They were unicorns, mythical creatures that no one ever saw or heard. The magic they produced just appeared on the shelves come release day.

So, I never thought about writing being a real career move. But I did try for some of these other careers:

1) Princess

Yeah, Writer wasn’t a real job, but Princess definitely was. Don’t expect logic from me. I don’t know who my Prince would have been (in all honesty, there never was a Prince in my dreams), but I definitely had strong aspirations of being taken away from my family to a castle far, far away to learn the ways of being a Princess.

2) President of the United States (POTUS)

I don’t know how many interviews I gave myself about being the first female President of the United States. When I was a kid, I was interviewed by NBC, ABC, CBS, the New York Times, all the networks and newspapers out there. There was no First Husband, and I was the first POTUS to do that too. I was downright awesome.

3) Rockstar/Actress

Despite the fact that I never could get the hang of the guitar, and I have incredible stage fright, I still thought that I could make it big as a Rockstar. I had plans to make it in music, and then do that crossover thing where I started doing blockbuster movies.

4) Archeologist

As soon as I learned what this job REALLY entailed, I pretty much gave up on it. But, before that, I had visions of me wearing a hat and carrying a whip that I used to swing from thousand year old columns that could collapse on me at any moment, and I would defeat grave robbers and Nazis and there would be a lot of running.

5) Spy

Sometimes, this one still comes to haunt me. I think my vision of being a spy was a lot more like the James Bonds or the Charlie’s Angels than it was actual reality. I had fancy dresses and dinner parties, and crazy gun fights in my head, whereas the reality of what a spy does is so much more and not at all wine and fine dining.

I had a lot of dreams where I had these big careers, where everyone would know who I was. I don’t know what that says about Kid Me that being a princess, or a rockstar, or Indiana Jones or James Bond was something I wanted to do. These days, I’m pretty happy with my military career, and writing my books in the quiet of my house. But every once in a while, I wonder what it would be like if the United States Government suddenly sent me on an assignment to another country to uncover a secret list buried in a tomb. Maybe this is why I write about heroes that are larger than life. Because maybe in some way, I’m living out all these careers I never had a chance to have.

Zoe Logan has always believed that those she loves will always leave her. It’s why she fights so hard against anyone getting close, but when sexy defense Gavin Ferrara zeroes in on her, she finds herself falling hard and exploring the hidden parts of herself that he brings out in her.

Gavin’s always trusted that playing hockey is the most important thing to him. But when a strange encounter from months ago leads to more between him and the local bar owner’s daughter, he’s torn between what he wants and what’s best.

WARNING: This book contains a threesome hot enough to scorch the sheets, a dirty talking Russian, a bisexual Italian, the college virgin who brings both of them to their knees, and the best anatomy and physiology study session ever.

She looked up at him, feeling the need to break the awkwardness of this encounter, but she wasn’t sure how. “Gavin, I said some things the other night…”

“We both did.”

She stopped and met his eyes this time, something she’d been trying not to do. He had this power over her when she held his gaze. “I was dealing with some things at home, and I took them out on you.”

“We both overreacted. It happens.”

Was this Gavin being reasonable? She expected the hot-tempered Italian, not the easy-going man before her. “Yeah. I was dealing with my mom and—”

“It seems we both have some stressors in our lives,” Gavin whispered to her. His breath was warm on her face. All she had to do was tilt her head up, and they’d be touching. And man, she wanted it, but was too afraid to take it. “Eventually, though, we have to deal with them.”

“Oh, my God, just kiss and make up already!” Misha called from the living room. “It’s kinda sickening how stubborn you two are.”

Zoe’s face warmed even more. She’d forgotten about Misha.

Gavin grinned. “He’s got a point.” His warm hands came around her face, holding her jaw in his palms. He tilted her face up toward his, his nose barely touching hers. “I’ve wanted to do this for days.” His mouth came down on hers before she could say a word. Warmth and strength surrounded her, some from him, most just caused by him.

He coaxed her mouth open and slid his tongue inside, gently caressing hers, but not yielding control for a moment. She gripped the collar of his shirt like a lifeline as one of his hands gripped her neck, and the other slid from her face to her hip. He pressed them together at the hips and before she knew it, her back hit the wall behind her.

She grunted, but she didn’t let go of him. Her leg wrapped around his, pulling him closer as they kissed. She was losing herself in his arms, and she didn’t think she could dig herself back out. Not that she wanted to ever let go. But when they separated for air, it didn’t help Zoe. She was still breathless.

Clapping behind Gavin surprised her. She dropped her leg with a sharp, audible intake of breath. Misha stood behind him, slow clapping with a big grin on his face. Meanwhile, Gavin’s erection pressed against her pelvis, straining against his jeans. His big body held her while his head dropped to her shoulder, not moving away from her.

“You’re such an asshole, Misha,” Gavin said against her collarbone.

“You guys put a hell of a show on,” Misha said, his Russian drawl thick with interest. “Don’t stop on my account. It’s hot.” Zoe’s eyes drifted from Misha’s broad shoulders, down to his narrow waist. Gavin chuckled against her shoulder, the vibrations of his laugh echoing through her body.

“You find this funny?” Zoe whispered in his ear.

He lifted his head and met her eyes. “A little bit.” His hands wandered over her body, one cupping her breasts, and lightly kneading the soft flesh.

She hissed. “Stop.”

“Do you really want me to stop?”

No. “Yes,” she said, but even she could hear the doubt in that word, and by the sound of his chuckle, so did he.

New Release Review: SCORING HIS HEART by Suzan Butler (Texas Highlanders #3)

Suzan had me at “hockey”…

Scoring His Heart
by Suzan Butler

This is a definite case of I liked it, but

I liked the characters. We see things from Zoe, Gavin, and Mischa’s points of view, which is an effective way to tell the story. We get insight into what they’re all thinking…but we also see all three of them have some major what the heck? mental moments. You could get serious whiplash from each of them at some point in the story when everything was going along just fine, when bam! they somehow decided in the privacy of their minds that it wasn’t fine after all–with very little, if any actual reason for the switch in the outside world of the story. It was frustrating at times.

The chemistry between all three was fantastic, and the sexy scenes were sizzling…but ultimately their relationship(s?) felt unfinished. One character went way too quickly from I never really noticed that person before, huh, I wonder why? to I love you. Seriously, way. Too. Fast. There was a very small handful (three, I think?) of horizontal–or mostly horizontal, anyway–encounters and one dinner out with other people before the declaration. And the third person in the relationship (trying very hard to keep it spoiler-free, though you can probably figure out who is whom in about 30 seconds) didn’t end up with any kind of resolution at all–they went from start to finish believing that they’d never have a true, lasting relationship with anyone. In the book they went from an intense three-way scene to slipping alone into the bathroom to…nothing. They had one more conversation, essentially giving another character advice and then just disappeared from the story. I really wanted that person to realize their own self-worth, figure out that they were loved, heck just feel valued as a person, but it didn’t happen. 🙁

This was a quick read–I started the night before and was finished the following afternoon with lots of breaks to pick up the kids, shop, do homework, etc–but the pacing of the story felt off. Things happened quickly for the characters when they were on the page together (reference back to the above paragraph especially) but in between scenes there would be large stretches of time when they weren’t in touch at all. After a huge scene between all three of them, almost two weeks goes by before the hero seeks out the heroine. Two. Weeks. Sure, he was on the road for nine days (though there’s only a little actual hockey in the book, which was disappointing), but surely he’s heard of a thing called a telephone? Especially when you made the big declaration last time you all spoke? Argh.

If the book had gone on longer a lot of these issues could probably have been resolved. We could have seen some kind of an HEA for character #3, and the relationship between the other two could have gone at a more realistic pace. I’m also not quite sure why Gavin’s 16-year-old niece was brought into the picture, because that really added a major squick factor to their big scene–she was somewhere in the house, (hopefully, please god) asleep, but still….

So…would I read more in the series? I think I’d give them a try. Hockey players, after all, are my catnip. For everything here that didn’t quite work for me, another aspect of the story did, so there’s hope that another book in the series might hit the back of the net.

New Release Review and Giveaway! NIGHT SHIFT (An Anthology) #1click4charity #loveislove

Night Shift is now available
6 NEW novellas — Never Before Released
100% of the proceeds will be donated to charity

Summer in the Big Easy is hot. Inside Tulane Medical Center the temperature is on the rise.

A doctor nursing a broken heart. A wounded warrior with no interest in love. A single father finding the girl who got away. A combat nurse trying to adjust to civilian life. Two lost souls looking for love. A former detective looking for answers and an FBI agent who finds more than he bargains for.

Desire. Lust. Excess. New Orleans will never be the same.

Six never before released stories that will leave you breathless.

Dirty things happen in the dark.

Most of the authors of the Night Shift novellas were new to me, and the book served as a great introduction. The fact that the entire book’s proceeds are going to charity made the entire package twice as appealing; even though I got a review copy, I still went out and bought my own just because 🙂

“Off Duty” is a sweet story about second-chances–second chances in romance, and second chances for a family. I loved this story from start to finish. If you haven’t read Sawyer Bennet before, it’s a great introduction. This novella is part of her Off series, but works well as a standalone. 4 stars/A-

“Rebound” was my first story by Chelle Bliss. I liked its construction–it begins at the end, and then takes the reader back to the beginning to see how Flash and Fiona first meet. It’s a fun and sexy tour of both New Orleans and the road back from heartbreak. 4 stars/B+

“Wanting to Forget” was a little more problematic–it’s not really a romance; it’s one man’s destructive path toward getting a woman he believes he can’t have out of his head. It’s really hard to like Jordie here. Really hard. Since it’s a prequel to his full-length novel ( Overtime ), there’s hope for his redemption. I’m willing to give him a chance to turn things around, but at the end of this novella I don’t know if I would if I were Kasey. Jordie has a serious amount of work ahead of him. Hopefully there will be groveling. And a major attitude adjustment… 3 stars/ C

“Closet Confessions” was my first Kindle Alexander story. I really liked both Derek (“Dr. Baby”–adorable!) and Justin, and was rooting for them from the beginning. Ms. Alexander added a clever twist in her story that made it even more enjoyable. 4 stars/B+

Brenda Rothert’s “Healing Touch” was another first read for me. I loved the romance between Joss and Carson–it was steamy but full of laugh-out-loud moments, not to mention an awesome use of a Magic 8 ball. The Magic 8 ball really does know all! I’ll definitely be reading more from this author. 4 stars/A-

Eden Butler’s “Swimming in Shadows”, like Toni Aleo’s story, wasn’t really a romance, though the potential is definitely there. Also like the earlier story, this is a prequel for a longer work,Shadows and Lies , the first in a new series. Fortunately, though, Ryan’s a much more sympathetic character than Jordie, even though he too is in a pretty dark place. He’s an Avengers fan, which puts me firmly in his corner. 😉 4 stars/A-

New Release and Giveaways! HAUNTED LOVE by Jessica Frances

Looks so good!
Haunted Love
by Jessica Frances
Publication date: February 23rd 2015
Genres: Adult, Paranormal Romance

My name is Thea Bell and I was murdered.

I always assumed that death was the end. So when my life was cruelly taken away from me, I never thought I would get a second chance to say what I needed to.

But then I was given a choice, a choice that allowed me to see the people I had left behind, and I knew I had to take it.

I wanted to say a proper goodbye. I needed justice for what happened to me.

But even in death, things rarely go to plan.

I never expected to meet him. I didn’t anticipate falling in love. I hadn’t considered the repercussions of coming back. I never realized I would put another person in danger.

I didn’t know my actions were going to haunt us forever.

My name is Detective Aiden Mercer, and I think I have gone insane.

I am seeing the murder victim of my current case alive and in the flesh, and that is simply not possible.

I can see her, hear her, touch her. She’s real to me, however I know this cannot be real. Right?

But try telling my heart that, because as I grow closer to catching Thea’s killer, I also fall deeper into trouble.

Because love is rarely anything but trouble and I know this love will haunt me forever.

I leave Aiden scanning over the boxes, moving back through my house and taking time to look over the photos I have hanging up. It’s strange how I had them along my walls, in my eye line for years yet never took the time to look at them. I used the photos as decoration instead of a reminder of the good times I shared with friends and family as well as the few amazing places I got to visit.

I take my time now, smiling at the memories sparked of Flynn, laughing at the reminders of the fun times we shared and yearning for the places I will never get to visit. I had a list of countries and activities I wanted to do for my summer vacation. I wanted to take at least one trip every summer and slowly work away at the list. Now I’ll never get to see any of those places, never have the chance to skydive in New Zealand, eat gelato in Italy, or go skiing in Switzerland. The most exciting thing I managed is a school field trip to New Orleans where we toured the main tourist destinations, and I ate beignets and gumbo.

I shake my head, slowly moving through the lower level of my house, checking over the mess made from the forensics people who appear to have coated every surface looking for foreign fingerprints. I don’t find anything suspicious here or out of place. There is nothing I can see that is missing, and nothing screams to me that there is a clue here. While I’m disheartened to still have nothing to give Aiden to go on, I stare up my staircase, knowing I will need to check up there, too.

With each step, my legs grow heavier. Soon, I’m dragging my feet. I purposely check every other room, leaving my bedroom for last. I’m dreading what will happen when I glance back inside that room. I feel ill as I approach the still ajar door.

I know I need to get this over with. I might remember something about the murderer in there. If anything is going to be amiss that might help us figure out who my killer is, it will be in my bedroom.

But how am I supposed to enter the room where I lost my life?

The room where I was beaten and violated?

Even if it means catching my killer, can I face what I might see in there? Do I really want that memory etched into my brain? Isn’t already having a good idea what I went through bad enough?

Then again, what if he is out there right now, terrorizing other women? What if my reluctance to walk into this room means another person will lose their life?

I take a deep breath, my hand reaching out to push the door open.

“You don’t have to go in there,” Aiden tells me.

I glance over my shoulder, seeing both worry and fury in his eyes. “I do.” I sound more sure then I feel, but I force my feet forward. Within two steps, I am standing inside my bedroom.

New Release Review and Giveaway! POLARITY IN MOTION by Brenda Vicars

I love this cover!

Polarity in Motion
by Brenda Vicars
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: December 2, 2014

Fifteen-year-old Polarity Weeks just wants to live a normal life, but with a mother diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, that’s rarely easy. Her life gets exponentially more disastrous when her sixth-period history classmates start ogling a nude picture of her on the Internet. Polarity would never have struck such a shameless pose, but the photo is definitely of her, and she’s at a complete loss to explain its existence.

Child Protective Services yanks her from her home, suspecting her parents. The kids at school mock her, assuming she took it herself. And Ethan, the boy she was really starting to like, backpedals and joins the taunting chorus. Surrounded by disbelief and derision on all sides, Polarity desperately seeks the truth among her friends. Only then does she learn that everyone has dark secrets, and no one’s life is anywhere near normal.

Read the first chapter on the Publisher’s website ==> Click Here

Polarity in Motion was a gripping read. Just reading about all that Polarity went through in her day-to-day life with her mom’s borderline personality disorder diagnosis and all the moving around her family does because of it was something else. But then to have a mysterious nude picture of her pop up online and spread through her new school like wildfire on top of that? Unreal…

For the first third or so of the book, the reader struggles right along with Polarity as she desperately hopes to be able to return home, unsure of how the system can be convinced once and for all that she’ll be safe there. Once she’s back with her parents, though, things don’t get immediately easy for her–she can count on one hand the number of people who truly believe that she didn’t pose for the picture, and unfortunately, for a long time her parents aren’t in that number. It truly seems baffling that this picture even exists for so much of the book, knowing Polarity as we do. The mystery of the picture–how it was taken, who took it, and why kept me turning the pages. I needed to know as much as Polarity did.

In the meantime, though, Polarity faces a host of other issues–racism, prejudice, bullying, teenage pregnancy, teen drug use, a look at how the system treats different groups of people differently, to name a few–and at times it all seemed to be a bit much. It felt like a good two or three books’ worth of issues, maybe even more, and none of them quite got the treatment they deserved here.

The ending–and the solution to the whodunnit? question–ended up feeling rushed. The author did a decent job of showing how there had been subtle indications of the truth all along, but it’s all resolved really quickly compared to the pace of the rest of the book. Given the cover photo (I know, I know–judging books by their covers and all that, so sue me) I would have thought there’d be more of a romance here than there was, though what was here was sweet when one of the two people involved wasn’t too busy pushing it away.

Teenagers. I tell you.

Verdict: Thought provoking and a good read, issues aside. I enjoyed Polarity’s voice, and would definitely read this author again.

The return of sculptor Emma Grant to her Georgia home town sparks the return of the visions she tries to deny and rekindles a centuries-old feud between shape shifters Venn Hearst, guardian of the Divine Tree (The Tree Of Knowledge) and his nemesis. Emma is determined to place and dedicate the statue honoring her beloved grandmother despite Venn’s opposition; despite the fact she is in love with Venn, despite his sacred duty not to permit it. Will she overcome a test of evil or shatter Venn’s world?

As Venn pelted across Aunt Fay’s parking lot, loose pebbles crunched beneath his feet. The Tyler streets were fairly deserted, with most people in bed by nine on a workday like today.

He paused to watch Emma through the store window, noting that Mrs. Grant had chosen to wait in the car with her dog. His anticipation mounted.

When he entered the shop, her scent grabbed him—plumeria and cinnamon—an instant turn-on. Even the heady aroma of coffee couldn’t rob him of her sweet, luscious fragrance,a perfume he’d profoundly missed. He drew a deep breath as he stepped behind her in line and enjoyed the sound of her voice while she spoke into a cell phone.

Instantly, she seemed to sense him as she stopped mid-sentence and turned.

He smiled and couldn’t help but flirt with her. “Something with whipped cream?”

She narrowed her eyes and angled her cell away from her ear with an incredulous nod. “Excuse me?”

“To drink.”

“Oh.” Her cheeks flushed a pretty pink. “Yes. Umm, and your recommendation is?” She cleared her throat, her green eyes now glinting with pale fire, and then her brows pinched as if she were trying to recall something.

Was it possible she recalled him? That would make things so much easier. He was already finding it difficult to behave as though he didn’t know her.

“Anything with chocolate,” he answered as his lupine senses went into overdrive. Her fragrance intensified, warmed, indicating to him that her body knew what her mind did not.

Her subconscious recognized him.

She gave her head a shake, confusion painted on her face. “Sorry. I . . .” She paused a beat, steeling her features, and then pointed to her phone.

Her voice drove him to the brink of desperation. He wanted to get her alone. He needed her to remember what they’d shared.

And his beasts concurred with a beat of wings and hammer of paws.

“Miss. What would you like?” the clerk behind the counter asked.

She faced forward again, leaving him to stare at her long, sleek, shimmering hair. He’d kill to slide his fingers through those rich strands.

“For some reason I’m craving something I haven’t had before.” Her voice was soft and sweet. “A mocha latte. And forget the calories. Add on some extra whipped cream.”

He swallowed. He had cravings, too, ones he hadn’t given in to for a very long time. “Good choice,” he said to her back.

Now to convince her of a few other things . . .

Hell, she’d fallen for him before, she would again.
