Publication date: March 22nd 2016
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult
Synopsis:

He’s gorgeous.

He’s reckless.

And he’s every woman’s dirty fantasy in the state of California except one… Quinn Ashby.

Recent graduate of Penn and top of her class, Quinn is whip smart, ambitious and interning as the new marketing coordinator for the Bexley Bruisers American Hockey League team. The last thing she needs is to waste her time on guys…especially one as lethal to her focus as Cash Brooks.

But once the bad boy hockey star tempts her into his world, threatening her professional future, she’s forced to decide whether to let him into her heart…or to leave him behind forever.

Excerpt:

A twenty-minute car ride later and I’ve got enough sweat under my armpits to fill a child’s size pool. When I pull up to the curb, I expect to be impressed by his building – but I’m more than impressed. I’m awestruck. His building is gorgeous, on a corner lot, with huge industrial sized windows overlooking Carrick Park, and black wrought iron railings leading up the concrete steps.

Cash swims into focus, walking down the front steps and onto the sidewalk. I swallow hard admiring his hard taut body in a tight pair of jeans stalking towards the passenger side door. It isn’t fair how good he looks this early in the morning or how his already dark skin appears even more sun-kissed against his white shirt.

“Good morning, Mittens.” He smiles, letting those infuriating dimples do their worst. “You know, it’s easier if you take a picture, it lasts longer.”

Returning a self-assured grin, I slide my sunglasses from my eyes to the top of my head and give him my steadiest eye contact. “Don’t flatter yourself. I wasn’t looking at you. I was admiring your building.” I jerk my gaze away from his wet lips, and he slides onto the seat, running his hand absentmindedly though his hair.

“Is that so?” he asks, his voice getting closer.

Clearing my throat I put my car in drive and pull into the oncoming traffic. I try to keep my focus on the road but my gaze wanders feeling his body permeate several more inches in my direction.

What is he doing?

“Brooks, I’m trying to drive here. Keep to you side.” I manage to choke out, feeling his hand brush a ringlet of hair over my shoulder.

“Did you miss me?” He smiles.

I roll my eyes and mumble, “You wish.”

“Wow. That is quite the skirt you’re wearing.” His gaze burns into me, and I inhale a sharp breath. His eyes are on my body. This is not good. This is really not good. “And that red blouse…Fuck, you need to put on a jacket before we get into that studio.”

I turn my attention to my body and make sure everything is intact. What is he even talking about? I look like any well-dressed young professional.

“This is how I always dress for work. Most call it business casual,” I reply.

Cash’s head lowers and his mouth is way too close to my ear. “That outfit is anything but casual.”

I glare at him, annoyed. “If you don’t like it, then don’t look.”

“I didn’t say I didn’t like it, Mittens. I love it. How the hell am I supposed to focus at the photo shoot with you in that?”

I grip the steering wheel. Does he not understand how inappropriate he is being? “Stop saying things like that to me. I’m a Bruisers’ employee, not your next fuck.”

“You’ve got to stop overthinking everything, Mittens. We’re going to happen.”

“So it’s all up to you? What about what I want?” I reply.

Cash smiles his patented sexy smirk. “And that is?”

“Get into Harvard. Find a stable career. And build a distinguished reputation as a professional.” I pause, letting out a trembling sigh. “Unlike every other girl in the state of California, I have zero interest in becoming Cash Brooks’s next conquest. I have bigger wants than banging the bad boy of the Bexley Bruisers. I’m a busy, vibrant, goal-oriented woman who would rather die than wait for a man to validate my existence.”

He throws his head back and laughs, enjoying my rejection. “Nothing like tooting your own horn.”

“I mean it,” I say, when his laughter stops and he is back to his dangerously charming grin. “I’m on to bigger and better things.”

“I can guarantee you won’t find bigger.”

Chapter One
1806
Sussex

Olivia Herbert knew James Weston was a rogue the first time he winked at her, one fine Sunday morning in August when butterflies were riding warm drafts of air through the open door of St. Godfrey’s and Mr. Bunce the curate was droning on and on as if he meant to put every person in the church to sleep.

She was staving off the urge to do just that by watching the butterflies. James Weston, it turned out, was watching her. As her gaze followed one butterfly—a delicate white one with spots of blue on its wings, who swooped and glided effortlessly on the hazy air—it connected with James’s. His family was sitting in the next pew over, and when their eyes met, the impudent boy winked at her.

She looked away at once. Not only had he caught her woolgathering, wishing she could flit about the church and out the door like that butterfly, but it was probably a sin to wink in church. With some effort she tried to focus her mind on the sermon, but within moments a bee flew overhead, and once again, quite independently of any wish to be well-behaved, her eyes tracked the insect as it buzzed away, right toward the Weston pew.

This time when he caught her eye, he grinned. Slowly he raised one hand, and with small, cautious movements, pretended to flick the bee as it flew by. Then he screwed up his face and mimed being stung, shaking his finger and sticking it into his mouth.

Olivia couldn’t help it. She smiled, and a tiny giggle shook her shoulders. His grin grew wider, and he wiggled his eyebrows at her.

A sharp jab in her side made Olivia hastily jerk her gaze back to Mr. Bunce, whose voice had settled into a low drone, as if he, too, were falling asleep. Beside her, Mother glared from the corner of her eye. Olivia repressed a sigh. Ladies didn’t giggle in church, and Mother was determined that Olivia would be a lady.

Mother didn’t even wait until they reached home. Her scolding began as they walked to their carriage after the service. “Olivia Herbert, what were you thinking? Laughing in church! What a common, hoydenish thing to do.”

“I’m sorry, Mother.”

“And making eyes at that boy.” Mother didn’t grimace, but her tone dripped with distaste. “Those upstart Westons.”

“Upstarts they may be, but well-heeled ones.” Father spoke for the first time, giving Olivia a measuring glance. “She could do worse.”

Mother gasped. “Thomas Weston is an attorney. I want better for our daughters, Sir Alfred.”

“You’ve got to be practical, madam.” Father waited as the footman helped them into the carriage. “Our girls won’t have much to attract a noble husband.”

“Only their beauty.” Mother’s gaze softened as she looked at Olivia and her younger sister, Daphne. “A lady’s face, along with her sweet temper and amiable disposition, are her greatest assets, girls.”

“Yes, Mother,” piped up Daphne. “I’ll make you proud and marry a royal duke!”

Mother laughed gently. “I’m sure you will, my beautiful darling.” It was already clear that Daphne took after her mother. Olivia wasn’t sure if she took after her father or not; Father was often preoccupied with rank and money, and he was very fond of wagering on the horse races, none of which appealed to her. But at the same time, Olivia didn’t share her mother’s keen interest in fashion or ladylike accomplishments. She supposed she might as she grew older, but at the advanced age of ten she wasn’t much interested in sizing up potential husbands.

Review-Banner
Jamie and Olivia were absolutely adorable for their first–six? seven?–years together, from the time that he got her in trouble in church when she was ten. So. Freaking. Cute! For the first few chapters I sat there thinking, They’re so cute together! I love them! What could possibly go wrong here? which you know is always when things go completely to…well, you know where.
Just like in life. Sigh.
But it’s okay, because of course fate brings them back together, and now there’s danger and suspense and uncertainty and all kinds of frustrated longing…which naturally isn’t going to stay frustrated for long! and the story gets even better from there 🙂
And they’re still wonderful together, I’m happy to report.
I hadn’t realized that this was the 4th book in the series when I started, and for much of the book it isn’t a big deal. Toward the end, though, it would have been helpful to know more of the story behind it. I won’t go so far as to say don’t start with this one, because I’m not sorry I did, but if you have a chance to read the others first, definitely do. I know I’m going to go back as soon as I can, because now I really want to see what goes before and if there are any clues to the big reveal that’s in this one.
Plus, I have a feeling I’ll like those couples *almost* as much as I liked Jamie and Olivia 🙂

About THE NATURAL HISTORY OF US:

One class assignment. One second chance at love. The school player is all in. Now he needs to win back the sweet commitment girl who’s forever owned his heart.

Justin Carter has a secret. He’s not the total player Fairfield Academy believes him to be. Not really. In fact, he used to be a one-woman guy…and his feelings for her never went away. Too bad he broke her heart three years ago and made sure to ruin any chance she’d ever forgive him.

Peyton Williams is a liar. She pretends to be whole, counting down the days until graduation and helping her parents at the family ranch. But the truth is, she’s done everything she can to get over Justin, and salvation is just around the corner. With graduation one short month away, she’ll soon break free from the painful memories and start her life fresh. Of course, she has to get through working with him on one last assignment first.

For Justin, nothing ever felt as right as being with Peyton, and now that fate’s given him a shot at redemption, he’s determined to make the most of it. And for Peyton…well, Justin Carter has always been her kryptonite.

Excerpt:

Planting my feet on the floor, I grab the assignment packet. I thumb through the long list of group dates, taking note of all the partner-time required (a lot), and a rush of endorphins floods my bloodstream. My heart pounds just like it did when I tagged out Jefferson to win last night’s game, and when a relieved exhale parts my lips, I hear Carlos say, “Uh oh.”

“What?” I ask distractedly.

“You’ve got that psycho look in your eyes.” I raise my eyes and he waves a finger back and forth in front of my face. “The same one you had before we egged Crestmont High last week. You’re planning something.”

Adrenaline bounces my knee. “Maybe I am.”

My hand beats out a rhythm on my thigh as I realize that this is exactly what I’d been waiting for. The answer to the itch under my skin. My extreme restlessness. It’s not a new feeling—if I were honest, it’s been on a low simmer for years. Being with Aly just brought it to a boil. I’ve been numb ever since I lost Peyton, and this… this insane marriage project is my chance to finally make things right.

“Tell Abuelita I’ll be there,” I say, returning my gaze to the back of Peyton’s head. “And that I’ll be bringing a girl even she can’t complain about.” From the corner of my eye, I see him stare at me in confusion. “I’m bringing my wife.”

Carlos’s mouth opens in a mix of shock and doubt and I don’t blame him. I saw Peyton’s reaction, too. But I have three whole weeks between now and then, and a plan taking shape in my mind.

Peyton may think she hates me, but that’s only because she doesn’t know the total truth. Soon, that’ll change—but I can’t rush it. I have to start small. Ease into it. Use these dates and outings to show her how much I’ve changed since I was fifteen and screwed everything up.

But I will do it.

“Mark my words, Carlos,” I say, feeling excited about a girl for the first time in a very long time. But then, that’s because it’s not just any girl; it’s my girl. She just doesn’t know it yet. “I’m gonna be the best damn husband in this entire class.”

He looks at me uncertainly, but that doesn’t faze me. I won’t let it. I know I don’t deserve it. Hell, I never deserved her. But I’m not letting anything stop meNot this time. Thanks to Coach Stasi, I’m going to remind Peyton of all the reasons she fell for me in the first place.

And then I’m going to make her do it again.

Review:

Such a cute story!

It was a bit slow to start–we’re pretty much thrown into the middle of things, three years after Justin and Payton broke up and on the day they’re assigned their final class project for Family and Consumer Sciences, and since we get the bulk of the backstory through the alternating chapters of backstory, it took a loooong time to get to the reasons behind it–but once the story got going I had a hard time putting it down. I really liked both Justin and Peyton (and OMG, why haven’t I read The Fine Art of Pretending yet? I’m going to have to soon–just to get more Justin :)); they probably could have done a hundred or so more pages of stuff and I would have happily kept on reading it.

School, work, sleep–whatever 😉

It did feel like the characters were acting a bit older at times than they probably should have–maybe this would have been better as a New Adult rather than YA?–but then the senior class project and Justin’s big decision wouldn’t have worked for the timeline, and I did like that aspect of it quite a bit. (Plus, given Justin’s family situation, it does make sense that he’s going to behave more adult than he is, thanks to his being left on his own so often.) I’m definitely anxious to see where Ms. Harris is going with the next book in the series–there are quite a few secondary characters in this one that I’d like to get to know better.

The Natural History of Us was the second book in the series, but it worked just fine without having read book 1 first. I didn’t honestly realize it was part of a series until I was almost finished with it, and by then I was just psyched to find out I could visit the characters again later on.

Release Day! AFTER THE STORM by Lexi Blake (Rising Storm Midseason 1)

Rising Storm - Header banner
Welcome to Storm, Texas, where passion runs hot, desire runs deep, and secrets have the power to destroy…

Nestled among rolling hills and painted with vibrant wildflowers, the bucolic town of Storm, Texas, seems like nothing short of perfection.

But there are secrets beneath the facade. Dark secrets. Powerful secrets. The kind that can destroy lives and tear families apart. The kind that can cut through a town like a tempest, leaving jealousy and destruction in its wake, along with shattered hopes and broken dreams. All it takes is one little thing to shatter that polish.

Reading like an on-going drama in the tradition of classic day and night-time soap operas like Dallas, Dynasty, and All My Children, Rising Storm is full of scandal, deceit, romance, passion, and secrets.

With 1001 Dark Nights as the “producer,” Julie Kenner and Dee Davis use a television model with each week building on the last to create a storyline that fulfills the promise of a drama-filled soap opera. Check out this fantastic excerpt from AFTER THE STORM!

“I didn’t know I was pregnant until I woke up from the accident.” Ginny’s voice was an impassioned whisper. “I found out two things that changed my life in that moment. I found out that my best friend was gone and that I was pregnant. And I prayed so hard that I hadn’t lost all of Jacob forever.”

Forever. That’s what she was looking at. She was looking at an entire lifetime of being a mother without a son. She loved her daughters dearly, but she would mourn Jacob forever. And this selfish girl was equating her pain as though they were the same. As though one night of spreading her legs gave her the right to mourn him.

“I think you woke up and realized you had two options. Take care of that baby alone or worm your way into Jacob’s family and his money.”

“I never cared about the money.”

Celeste wasn’t going to listen to that tripe. “Of course you did. Not enough to keep your legs closed. You say you loved Jacob but how long did you wait before you hopped into bed with that Murphy boy? Did you even break it off with my brother-in-law? How many men do you need on your string?”

“I’ve never slept with Logan, but I will admit that I’m in love with him. I love him in a way I never loved Jacob. Jacob was my best friend, but I know now that he wasn’t my soul mate. I pray with everything I am that this is his child, that we receive a miracle because I don’t want him to be lost forever, but I won’t hide what I feel for Logan and I won’t pretend it’s nasty. Not even to placate you, Celeste. I want to make things right between us and that means apologizing to you. Celeste, I’m so sorry I hurt you. I never meant to. I should have been braver. I should have been stronger, but I woke up and the world had crashed around me and I wanted the love you could give me. That all of you could give me. I’m sorry that it brought you so much pain.”

Something about the way she was standing there enraged Celeste. How could she stand there looking so innocent? How could she say exactly the right things to garner empathy? Celeste didn’t want to empathize. She wanted to fight and tear up things and destroy the world around her because it seemed so damn intent on destroying her. She wanted to burn it all down.

She didn’t feel her hand snap back, didn’t quite understand what she was doing. The world seemed tinged in red at the corners as though rage now filtered her vision. And it slowed everything down. In horror she realized she was going to strike Ginny Moreno. Her hand was going to bring justice her words never could.

And then it slapped against flesh. A strong hand circled her wrist and Travis stared down at her like he had no idea who she was.

BLURB:

It finally happened, I lost my virginity. Cue applause and cheers.

For a while life was all rainbows and kittens prancing in a sky full of cotton candy clouds…that was until the demands of the real world set in.

My best friend is getting married and she asked me to be her maid of honor. She’s not worried about flowers, or the dress, or the food at the venue. No, she’s worried about the bachelorette party, what kind of penis crown she will wear, and the nipple size of the stripper who will be attending.

I’m in way over my head trying to balance life with a boyfriend, planning a penis party, and writing my romance novel. Something is bound to give.

This is my life after my happily ever after…

About the Author:
Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.
Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.
Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

New Release Review and Giveaway! FAIR PLAY by Tracy A. Ward

FairPlay_BlitzBadge

Title: Fair Play
Author: Tracy A. Ward
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 28, 2016
Publisher: Self-published
Format: eBook
ISBN: 9780997282702

Synopsis:

Who knew love could bring a playwright so much drama?

Writing three plays for a nationally acclaimed theater in Phair, Texas, was never supposed to put Ashlyn Carter’s inheritance at risk or make or break her future. And it certainly wasn’t supposed to force her into constant contact with the very guy she’s avoided since her teenage crush-gone-bad days.

Noah Blake. He’s Ashlyn’s enemy, for good reason. As her older brother’s best friend, he seems hell-bent on interfering with nearly every aspect of her life. So how then does he also seem to be her muse?

When Ashlyn reluctantly agrees to act out scenes with Noah from the play she’s writing in order to trigger her creativity, the spark of passion she’d felt for him as a teenager flares up again. But there’s more at stake than just her future as a playwright or the inheritance she never cared about in the first place. Finding out the theater she loves is in danger of closing puts everything she thought she knew and felt about Phair…and Noah…to the test. Will there be a standing ovation for Ashlyn Carter, playwright, or will the curtain drop and fade to black? Only by facing their biggest fears together will Ashlyn and Noah learn to trust in themselves and each other.

Review:

Fair Play is a cute story (older brother’s best friend! Secret crush!) with a somewhat ridiculous premise…believing that the director would strong arm Ashlyn and Noah into “improvising” scenes so that Ashlyn can write them with more feeling? Hard to buy into…though I could see him urging her to go out and experience what she’s writing about to give the story more umpf, to be that specific about the “who” to do it with is a bit of a stretch. Maybe if he were a small-town nosy busybody who’d known them since birth, I’d buy it…maybe.

But–that aside, this was an entertaining read. I liked both Ashlyn and Noah, and thought they worked well together on the page. (Better when they were being “them”–the bits where they were supposed to be their on-stage altar egos was a little strange.) Having a playwright heroine was a different twist, and one I liked. Noah’s difficult backstory and the threat from Ashlyn’s past added some interest to the story.

Overall, I enjoyed this new-to-me author and would definitely try something else from her in the future.

Rating: 3 1/2 stars / B-
