Jessi Wallace eyed the cute bartender’s butt the way a hungry cat might eye an unsuspecting bird. She actually licked her lips. “I am so going to do him.”

Layla Messner held back a sigh, took another sip of her lemon-drop martini, and asked herself for the sixth time that night, Why am I here, again?
She should have known better than to accept Jessi’s invitation to go out tonight. They weren’t really friends, just across-the-hall neighbors in the same apartment complex that housed many of the Buff State students here in Buffalo, New York. She and Jessi would nod and smile when they passed each other, occasionally stop and chat, but they’d never partied together. So it had been quite the surprise when Jessi tapped on her door two hours ago with a smile and an invitation: “Feel like cutting loose tonight?”

Silly Layla, thinking Jessi was trying to be friendly. More likely, she just wanted a wingman—or wingwoman in this case—and had no one else to step out with.

Jessi leaned over the bar provocatively in her low-cut top, calling to the bartender and pointing to her empty glass. “Can I have another down here?”

Oh, God, she was actually batting her eyelashes. And the way she was leaning to flash her cleavage, it was a wonder her boobs didn’t fall right out onto the bar.

Layla glanced down at her own chest, pulling back her shoulders. Her boobs weren’t so bad, even if they weren’t shown off as blatantly as Jessi’s. Layla knew she had nothing to be ashamed of in that department. If anything, she’d been generously blessed.

The problem was, she was a little too blessed in other areas as well. “Curvy” would be a kind description. “Chubby” might be more to the point.
Jessi, on the other hand, had a body that was every guy’s wet dream. She had big breasts and a tiny little waist that curved out to a rounded pair of hips. The tight, short skirt she wore had every guy in the room craning his neck for a second look at her ass.

The place was pretty quiet for a Friday night. But then again, it was the weekend before spring break, and much of the college-age crowd that usually frequented the Shamrock had already left town. Layla had a four-hour drive to get to her parents’ house and was wiped from spending the day with a class of hyper first graders. Morning would be soon enough to make the trip home.

The bartender ambled down their way and gave them both a smile. “Ready for another, ladies?”

Layla’s heart warmed at the way he included her in the offer. He didn’t just ignore her, the way some guys did, to focus on her prettier companion.
Jessi smirked and tapped the rim of her glass. “I’d like another Hard Fast Screw please.” She practically purred the order for the Shamrock’s variation of a screwdriver.

“You got it.” He directed his gaze at Layla, and her heart gave a little flip. It was too dark in the bar to tell what color his eyes were, but she knew they were beautiful. Just like the rest of him. Dark hair, a buff body, and a gorgeous face. High cheekbones, a straight nose, chiseled lips. Those lips moved, but Layla was too mesmerized by his looks to pay any attention to what he was saying.

She blinked. “Uh, excuse me?”

“He asked if you want another drink.” Jessi’s cutesy moves were forgotten as she gave Layla the death stare. Don’t poach on my territory.

As if. Still, a girl could dream, couldn’t she?

The Bradens- Peaceful Harbor, MD #3
Melissa Foster
Releasing on April 20th, 2016
World Literary Press
Fall in love with Sam Braden in the Bradens of Peaceful Harbor. Hot, sexy, & wickedly naughty second cousins to the Weston, Colorado Bradens we know and love.
River rafting and adventure company owner Sam Braden works hard and plays harder. He’s fast, focused, and determined—and never at a loss for a willing woman to share his time with. The trouble is, the only woman he wants refuses him at every turn.
Physician assistant Faith Hayes escaped her painful past and built a safe, happy life in Peaceful Harbor. She’s also put what she’s learned to good use helping others by founding Women Against Cheaters, an online support group. When her boss’s sinfully sexy brother sets his sights on sweet Faith, she knows the self-professed player is everything she shouldn’t want, and she’s determined to resist him.
Sam pulls out all the stops, proving to Faith that his past doesn’t have to define his future. As she lets down her guard and begins to trust Sam, intense conversations turn to intimate pleasures. But when real life steps in and their pasts collide, it’s Faith who’s left with something to prove.

Somehow, Sam “I never met a woman I didn’t like, and I never ‘liked’ them more than once” Braden ended up being my favorite Braden so far! There’s just something about an ultimate playboy who meets the right woman and completely converts to monogamy, isn’t there? 🙂

In case you can’t tell, I loved, loved, LOVED Sam. From his very first scene, he was a fantastic hero. Even though he hasn’t had any kind of a real relationship with a member of the opposite sex since his first one at sixteen (the one that broke his poor little teenaged heart, of course!), he threw himself right into one with Faith, with gusto. Of course she knew all about his reputation and was more than a little resistant. Which just meant that Sam had to pull out all the stops to convince her of his sincerity…

Which he does with style! Oh my goodness, did he ever–the way he convinces Faith to go on a first date with him was absolutely amazing, and worth the price of the book alone. But he doesn’t stop there–once this guy decides he’s going to give his woman his all, he really goes all out. From the first page, this is one hero that will have you melting, guaranteed!

Faith was a little harder to like, at first–she’s been hurt before (so much so that she’s actually created a website/forum group called Women Against Cheaters to try to help others cope and heal), so it makes sense that she’d be slow to trust his change-around, but it felt like she took it a bit too far at times, waffling away from him when he’d given her nothing but proof of his sincerity. Of course that did make him step up his game, and led to even more Sam-is-an-awesome-specimen-of-a-boyfriend moments, so it’s really hard to find too much fault with her. There was a little bit of impatient hrumpfing on my part, but overall this has been my favorite of the series so far.

And only about 75% of that is because of Sam. Okay, maybe 80% 😉

River of Love should work okay as a standalone–it just so happens that I have read the previous Bradens at Peaceful Harbor book ( Surrender My Love (Love in Bloom: The Bradens): Cole Braden ), but even if I hadn’t I would have done just fine with this one. Nate and Cole show up with their significant others quite a bit, but you won’t feel lost at all if you haven’t read their stories yet. (However, chances are high that you’llwant to read them ASAP, just because of the awesomeness of the Braden family. Nate’s story, Healed By Love , was added to my TBR before I’d even finished Cole’s. Consider yourself warned.)

Next up, Shannon’s story ( Crushing on Love: Shannon Braden)–can’t wait!

Five Reasons Women Love Bad Boys

By Jessica Lemmon

Oh, the bad boy. Who doesn’t love a guy in black leather, with a wicked curve to his smile, and a gleam in his eye that says, “Come on, baby, let’s get into trouble.”?

I never knew I was the bad boy type…until I started writing them. Now I can’t get enough. What’s beautiful about bad boys is there is a wide range. From down and dirty to hard and gritty to the kind of bad boy I love to write the most: the sweet heat.

You know the type. The kind of guy who is a good family man at heart, but won’t hesitate to toss his woman over his knee. The man who is loyal to his friends, but still takes physical risks that put him in danger. From billionaires, to ex-military landscapers, to rock stars, I’ve written many, many bad boys. And I’m not stopping any time soon.

Here are my top five reasons women like you (and me!) love bad boys. I’ve also included a few of my bad boys as recommendations. Which one is for you?

  1. Bad Boys know who they are. They may be jerks, but they know they are and aren’t afraid to be that way. The key to any successful pairing with a bad boy is to find a heroine who challenges him. Bad boys don’t shy away from challenge. They take it on.
    See: Fighting for Devlin
  1. Bad Boys are confident in the sack. Because they have had so much *ahem* experience in the bedroom, the woman who lands a bad boy is going to find he’s pretty darn good at what he does in there. He knows how to please her, and because of a stubborn streak a mile wide, he’s not going to stop until he does.
See: Bringing Home the Bad Boy
  1. Bad Boys are unpredictable. The girl of his dreams probably dated some schmoe before she dated him, and that guy likely ironed his socks. Meanwhile, her new bad boy beau is telling her to pack a bag because he has a surprise for her, and he’s not going to tell her what it is.
See: A Bad Boy for Christmas
  1. Bad Boys are loyal. He won’t abandon his true friends, or a family that’s done him right. While bad boys often run from what’s hurting them, they still have a network of friends they will never cut out of their lives.
    See: Rescuing the Bad Boy
  1. Bad Boys love endlessly. Once you win a bad boy’s heart, he’s not going anywhere. He values the love of a good woman the way he values a shot of the best whiskey: through to his soul. Bag one of these boys and you’ll experience a lifetime of love and loyalty, and a healthy dose of toe-curling unpredictability.
See: Return of the Bad Boy

Another second chance romance–yay!

Asher’s decided to calm down his rock star lifestyle–mainly because of the three-year-old son he recently discovered he had (one night stand with a groupie, ugh–but hey, the kid’s adorable at least) and has bought a lake house in Evergreen Cove so that he can be near Hawk. He’s trying to pull himself together for his son, and battling Hawk’s mother (and grandmother) for the right to see his son more. It just so happens that Gloria, his agent and sometime-lover has recently moved to town too, though she’s been avoiding him pretty studiously.

Until the start of the book, that is, when Glo decides to suck it up deliver a mis-delivered check to her client. And then watch out…

I enjoyed watching Ash become the kind of guy his son could look up to some day, just as much as I enjoyed watching him pursue Gloria for all he was worth. Man, did the guy have it bad, and it made for some cute moments, like this one:

So, in a way he lied to Even when he said he wasn’t going to take advantage of her in her passed-out state. He was going to cuddle with her, and he was going to cuddle hard.

Seriously, too adorable.

Unfortunately for Ash, he is reduced to such subterfuge quite a bit, because Gloria’s got some major issues when it comes to families and commitments. Not only does she (try to) resist Ash for all she’s worth for a good chunk of the book, she’s also convinced that her less-than-stellar experiences with family will be a liability when it comes to Ash trying to create one with his son. Honestly, her nearly neurotic hesitance over these issues got to be a bit much after a while, though Ms. Lemmon does make a convincing argument for why she’s like that. (It’s still frustrating to read, though.)

But then Ash spends some more time with Hawk, and the cuteness makes up for so much. Not to mention the humor. This is Ash, after spending an exhausting day on the lake with his son, one of the first times he’s had him without Hawk’s mother and grandmother watching his every move:

Things had been less like the music video he’d directed in his head and more like a nightmare on the open water.

LOL! Obviously, spending time with three-year-olds was not something the rock star had a lot of experience with…yet.

If you’ve seen Ash and Glo as secondary characters in other series books, watching them find their HEA will be particularly satisfying, I imagine. Even if you haven’t, though, it’s quite a ride–and the ending? Will give you all the feels 🙂

Return of the Bad Boy is the fourth in the series, and the couples from #1-3 all show up in this one quite a bit. I managed okay not having read the other three (yet!), though at times I did feel a bit out of the loop–not enough to dim my enjoyment of Ash and Gloria’s story, though.

He’s a mess…Asher Knight has three constants in his life: music, beautiful women, and a bottle of Jack. He lives for the next gig, the next city, and dreams only of a life spent in front of an arena full of screaming fans. But Asher’s nomad ways come to a sudden stop when he learns he’s the father of a three-year-old from a past relationship and suddenly this rock star bad boy is forced to put down roots.

Only she can clean up

Gloria Shields is no one’s fool. Sure, the sexual chemistry between her and Asher has always been intense, but she’d never risk giving her heart to a man who has a perfect record for breaking them. Except the man desperate to make things right with his newfound son is nothing like the rock god she’s guarded her heart against for years. And it isn’t long before she starts to wonder if life with this bad boy might be the best thing that’s ever happened to her.

In a bet between two old flames…
Rex Leighton dominates the boardroom in the day and prowls the ballroom at night. Searching for the perfect bride to usher him into the aristocracy, he abandoned the idea of love a long time ago–the last time he saw the delicious May Sedgwick. But when he’s roped into a bet, where the prize is the means to fund his greatest ambition and the stakes are a marriage he’s already planning for, Rex is willing to go all in. There’s just one problem-he’s competing against the only woman he’s ever loved and he’s sure she’ll ruin all his plans.
Only love can take it all
Miss May Sedgwick could be the belle of the season…if she cared. May is more interested in the art studio than the marriage market and her craving to pursue her passion far outweighs her desire for a titled English husband. Winning this bet will finally allow her to pursue her true artistic desires. Rex Leighton losing is just a side benefit, as are his breathtaking kisses that she just can’t seem to resist.

My first book by this author, but definitely not my last!

I really liked Rex and May and their second chance romance 🙂 It takes place just before the turn of the (twentieth) century, which was a nice change of pace–Rex wanting to electrify the entire hotel he wanted to build was just such a neat detail (and totally reminded me of Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess, shielding herself from the “abominations” her son had recently installed in Downton Abbey, LOL). May’s a department store heiress–like Cora, she’s being pursued for her dowry by ever more impoverished nobleman, but she’s reached the point where she’d just as soon pursue her own interests (interior design–she’s even contemplating starting her own business) as wed, especially when love isn’t there.

Not that she trusts love, because it’s burned her before. She’s looking at you, Reg, Er, Rex. But then her father’s business associate/right hand man comes for a visit, dropping a proverbial bomb, and suddenly marriage becomes a necessity. Because fate (or Ms. Carlyle) has a devious sense of humor, soon afterwards May finds out that that man who broke her heart six year ago? Yeah, he’s here. In London. And also looking to marry–someone who has a position in London society that can benefit his new hotel. Not a fellow American who’s looked down on for her American-ness and whose father hates him.

But of course as soon as they’re in a room together, the sparks are still flying as crazily as ever, which is most inconvenient for them both. And then there’s the bet…

Actually this book almost felt like a two-parter–part one being the angsty bet one, where they sniped a bit at each other and each had to witness the other spending more time than was comfortable with prospective, titled spouses (who happened to be brother and sister, to add even more drama to it all). And then the second part was after they both chucked their prospectives to the curb and gave in to what had been simmering between them for more than six years…only to have both of their families throw up obstacles. You gotta know that when the hero and heroine declare love and intend to wed at just a little past 50% in that something major’s going to get in their way soon–their HEA still has a while to go.

Which, for all its frustration, is a good thing. Because the rest of the story was–well–quite a story 🙂 (There were gasps of surprise going on over here. While my daughter was driving. Sorry, honey!)

While this is third in the series, it worked just fine as a standalone. The couple from the first book were mentioned, mainly because he was the nobleman that May originally intended to marry (plus, Rex knew him from business dealings), but other than that, this one was fairly self contained. I’ve of course added 1 and 2 to my TBR ( One Scandalous Kiss and One Tempting Proposal ), and am daring to hope that May’s good friend Lady Emily will be getting her own story in the not too distant future…

Pierce Harrison—yes, that Pierce Harrison, black sheep of the wealthy Harrison clan—has come home to his family’s luxurious Long Island compound. The big question is why the dangerously sexy soccer star agreed to coach a kids’ soccer team. His co-coach Abby McCord should be grateful. Instead she’s fending off some seriously smoldering advances from the scandal-ridden athlete. Good thing bad boys are so not her type . . .
Abby is definitely not lacking in passion, but the sweet-faced beauty needs to learn a thing or two about taking a team to the championship—and a whole lot about how to let a man into her once-broken heart. Pierce definitely knows how to make the moves, but will Abby trust that the bachelor the world has condemned as a scoundrel can settle down with the one woman who has taken hold of his heart?

Ignoring the dread that flowed through him with each step, Pierce followed his sister across the expanse of emerald green lawn that separated her house from the main mansion. He took deep breaths, inhaling the familiar and cherished scent of the water that lay just beyond the edge of the estate. His great-grandfather had built the mansion on prime property, picking ten acres of land adjacent to the Long Island Sound. Pierce let the sound and smell of the water wash over him as he willed himself to relax. Not every family gathering had to turn into a skirmish. Maybe today would be one of the calmer get-togethers.

He could hope, anyway. Between his father and his eldest brother, there never seemed to be a lack of sparks to light the always quietly simmering keg.

Before he knew it, he and Tess were crossing the wide stone patio, being greeted by the members of his family. As Tess had predicted, they were all shocked to see him. Charles’s children had grown and actually seemed excited he was there. He hugged his two nephews and niece briefly as they chattered at him.

But he knew what his father and brothers were thinking, as they stood there in their collared polo shirts and khaki shorts, looking like a collection from a J.Crew catalog. They were looking him over in his thin white T-shirt that revealed the many tattoos on his arms, the sporty mesh shorts that revealed more tats on his legs, and thinking that he was a colossal fuckup— as Charles Harrison II had always said he was. Thinking about how that summer he’d been embroiled in a trashy tabloid scandal over in England, a scandal big enough that it’d made its way across the ocean to the States, tarnishing the Harrison name and legacy. He saw the disdain in his father’s gray eyes as he shook Pierce’s hand with the same cool hello he always granted him. He felt the disapproval radiating from his oldest brother, Charles III, as they gave each other a quick, awkward hug.

Dane, however, had been ecstatic to see him. He hugged him tightly, slapping him on the back, going on about what a great surprise this was and how glad he was to see him. Pierce just smiled back. He had to give his middle brother credit; in recent years, Dane had tried to have some kind of relationship with him. It was Pierce who’d always held Dane at arm’s length.

Now, as Pierce looked at Dane—charming and gregarious as ever—he seemed to be radiating with light. Pierce had never seen him so vibrant, and guessed Tess had been right about why by the way Dane proudly introduced him to Julia Shay.

“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you,” Julia said as she shook his hand. “I’ve wanted to for some time.” Pierce couldn’t help but be wowed by her. She was stunning. Curvy as hell, fiery red hair, beautiful face, hazel eyes that shone with intelligence. Strong and sharp. A presence. Pierce bet she gave Dane a run for his money. Together they were powerful, that was clear.

“Heard you two just got back from a long trip,” Pierce said, shoving his hands into the pockets of his shorts. He could feel his father’s eyes boring into his back, but Pierce refused to turn around and give him the satisfaction of engaging in verbal warfare.

“We did indeed,” Dane said, a broad smile lighting up his face. He slipped an arm around Julia’s waist to pull her into his side. “Ah! Right on cue.” He waved over the butler who had appeared with a silver tray covered with flutes of champagne and thanked him. “Everyone grab one. We have news to share.”

“I knew you were up to something,” Charles II griped good-naturedly.

Charles III glanced over at where his three children now sat on an outdoor sofa, each of them completely wrapped up in their electronic handheld games. Seeing they were situated, he took a glass from the tray and said to Dane, “You’re glowing. Let me guess: You’re pregnant, little brother.”

Dane barked out a laugh as Julia snorted. “Nope. Try again.”

“You got engaged on your trip,” Tess proclaimed. “Right?” She raised her glass to them.

“You’re close,” Dane conceded, glancing at Julia. She smiled back at him.

Pierce stared. He’d never seen Dane like this with a woman: utterly, hopelessly smitten. Pierce and Dane shared one trait: They attracted women easily and went through a lot of them. Truth was, Pierce was more of a player than his older brother—Dane prided himself on the fact that even though he never settled down, he treated women like gold and stayed with some of them for weeks before ending things amicably. But they were both resolutely single and enjoyed playing the field. So seeing him so obviously gaga for a woman had Pierce truly gobsmacked.

“Well?” their father demanded. “Spill it!”

“We were on this fabulous cruise,” Dane began, “enjoying the trip of a lifetime in true paradise . . . and yes, I asked Julia to marry me.”

“I knew it!” Tess cried. She turned to Pierce, eyes bright. “I told you so!”

“Wait, Tesstastic, wait,” Dane said. A new grin curved his mouth as he looked at Julia, who met his gaze with a warm grin of her own. Still looking into her eyes, he continued, “We were already out there in paradise . . . we knew we wanted to be together . . . so, well, we eloped.” He turned his head to take in the looks on his family’s faces as he revealed, “We got married last Sunday. An intimate ceremony on the island of Santorini, on a hilltop overlooking the sea. Just us. It was perfect.”

Julia nodded and blushed a bit. “It really was.”

“Wait, wait!” Tess said in excitement, and leaned in to grab Julia’s left hand. A tremendous diamond ring and matching diamond wedding band sparkled on her finger. “OH! Oh my goodness! How did I not see that before?”

“I was kind of hiding my hand behind my back,” Julia admitted with a chuckle.

Charles II’s eyes dashed from Dane to Julia and back again. “You eloped?

“This is wonderful!” Tess squeaked, throwing herself at Dane. Careful not to spill her champagne, she hugged him tightly, rocking back and forth as she said, “I’m so happy for you! Both of you! Oh my God!”

Charles III stuttered out an awed laugh as he went to Julia. “Welcome to the family, sister-in-law,” he said as he enfolded her in a careful hug.

Pierce watched, feeling awkward. He’d only just met this woman. And now she was family. Part of their dysfunctional, high-profile family. God help her.

He glanced over at his father, who seemed both perplexed and annoyed. Any discomfort for Charles II was like candy to Pierce. Smiling, he went to Julia as his brother released her and gave her a light, quick hug. “Welcome to the clan, Julia. I wish you luck. We’re a tough bunch.”

“Do you always have to be so negative about this family?” Charles II growled at his back. “Ignore him,” Pierce whispered to Julia. “I usually do.” He pulled back and winked at her before moving to Dane. “Congratulations, bro.”

“Thank you!” Dane pulled Pierce into an embrace, clapping him on the back. “I’m so glad you’re here and I got to tell you in person! Great timing on your part. I know I’ve been away, but I had no idea you were coming.”

“Nobody did,” Pierce admitted. “Was a spur-of-the-moment thing. Just got into New York a few hours ago.”

“He’ll be staying with me while he’s here,” Tess said. She raised her glass and said, “A toast! To the newlyweds! Dane, Julia, we wish you all the luck, love, and happiness in the world. All good things, because you both deserve them.”

“Here, here,” Charles III said, smiling.

All six raised their glasses and clinked them together lightly before sipping. The simmering mixture of excitement and slight tension wasn’t lost on Pierce. It was an interesting moment. He smirked to himself. At least he wouldn’t be bored his first day back.

“Got them to open a bottle of the Krug, I see,” the patriarch said after one taste.

“Of course. Nothing but the best for my bride,” Dane said, and leaned down to drop a kiss on Julia’s mouth.

“I want to hear every detail,” Tess demanded.

“Let’s all sit down then, and we’ll tell you,” Dane said.

“And show you some pictures,” Julia added, beaming.

“You have pictures?” Tess squealed, practically bouncing. “Oh good!”

Pierce chuckled at his sister’s exuberance.

“Can I talk to you for just a minute?” Charles II speared Dane with a look.

“Not now, Dad,” Dane said. In a move of obvious dismissal, he turned his back on the patriarch and escorted Julia over to the long table. “Let’s all just sit and enjoy,” he said over his shoulder, “and I’ll tell you all about the trip.”

“Whatever you’re thinking of saying to him,” Tess whispered hotly to their father, “don’t. Please, Dad, don’t ruin this moment for them.”

“I have the right to know if she signed a prenup,” Charles II hissed.

“Not now,” Charles III hissed back at the same time that Tess said, “Dad! No!”

“Oh for fuck’s sake,” Pierce growled. “How is that any of your business, old man?”

Charles II turned on his youngest with a harsh glare. “Anything regarding Harrison money is my business. And guarding it has become a standard. First it was your faithless mother. Then his tramp of an ex-wife.” He flicked his chin in Charles III’s direction.

“Shut your mouth,” Charles III snapped, his eyes flickering to his children and back again. “My kids are sitting ten feet away, and that’s their mother you’re talking about.”

“So what? She’s worthless and they know it,” Charles II went on. “She hasn’t seen them in how long? And now, if this marriage doesn’t work out—”

“Shut up,” Pierce bit out, taking a step toward his father. “Just shut up. They’re happy. You step on this moment, Dane will never forgive you. And neither will the rest of us.”

“Don’t tell me what to do, boy,” the patriarch snarled. They locked gazes, tense hostility radiating from them both. “You think I care what you think of me? You?

“I know you don’t,” Pierce growled back. “But you care about Tess and your other sons, so maybe you should think about them for once instead of yourself.”

“Wonderful.” Tess stepped between them. She tried to keep her voice down as she said, “Pierce has been home for all of an hour, and you’re already at each other’s throats. Stop. Right now. Tonight is for Dane and Julia, and for celebrating. Hold off your animosity for one evening, okay?”

“She’s right,” Charles III added. He looked at his father and said sternly, “Dad? Not. Now.” Then he looked at his brother and added, “For once, I agree with you. But stand down, all right?”

Pierce flicked a glance at him, gave a curt nod, and stepped back. The old familiar anger coursed through him, hot and bubbling, but he swallowed it.

“Fine.” Charles II eyed his three grown children circling him, barely reining in his irritation. “Let’s all go toast the happy couple and hear about how they cared so much about our family that they denied us the pleasure of seeing them get married.”

“It’s not about you or us!” Pierce cried in disgust.

“It’s his life!”

“I can hear you all,” Dane said dryly from a few feet away, where he and Julia sat at the long glass table. “And so can my wife.” She stared off into the distance, not wanting to make eye contact with the squabbling relatives. “So why don’t you just stop and come sit down? I’m not letting anything bring us down tonight. Not even another skirmish in the ongoing Harrison Family Wars.”

Tess went over to Dane and Julia, offering apologies, while Pierce and his father stared each other down.

“Cut the shit, gentlemen,” Charles III murmured, stern and cool as he looked from one to the other from behind his black-rimmed glasses. “For Dane.”

Charles II snorted again and lifted his glass to his lips, looking away as if Pierce were a piece of garbage.

Fuck you, old man, Pierce thought. I made a good life for myself, in spite of you.

One he’d created for himself, through dedication, hard work, determination, and natural ability. One he’d created with very little help, financial or emotional. Pierce had spent most of his youth fighting to prove he was worthy. Eventually, he stopped fighting and simply left. But even if he’d left England in a cloud of controversy, what the hell had he been thinking, coming back here?

Pierce shot back the rest of his champagne in one long gulp, put the glass on the table, and looked over at his two nephews and his niece. Charles’s kids were all under nine years old, and looked surly and bored.

“Any of you like soccer?”

Ava and the older boy, Thomas, both looked up and nodded.

“Find a ball. Let’s go kick it around,” Pierce said. “We’ll play a little while the grownups have their talk.”

“I don’t think—” Charles III started to say.

“There’s one in the playroom,” said the youngest, five-year-old Myles. He carelessly dropped his iPad mini onto the sofa and jumped up. “I’ll go get it!”

Five minutes later, Pierce was out on the lawn, kicking a soccer ball around with the kids. It was the best thing for him to do just then, and he was grateful for it. Family powwows had never been his thing, much less sharing space with his father for more than five minutes.

In Flight

By Rachael Orman

All it took was for the right, older man to sit next to me. That flight changed my life. What started out as boring, small talk swiftly changed to
flirting. Things got out of hand for a while, but he made sure to leave me with memories I’ll never forget.

Then he took me home to meet his twin brother and introduce me to what it’s like to have the full attention of two men at the same time.

Shifting in his seat, he turned toward me so our knees bumped in the small space. He unbuttoned his jacket and shrugged it off, revealing a crisp white dress shirt and multi-hued tie before draping it over his lap.

“How about…what do you do when you aren’t at work? For fun, that is.” I moved so I was turned toward him as I asked the first question I could think of.

His lips pressed together, making it appear he was fighting to hide a smile. “I like to tie up and spank young women.”

If I hadn’t seen the sparkle in his eye, I would’ve thought he was completely serious from his tone of voice. Not to mention, the smile he was fighting to hide.

“Well, sir, that’s awfully forward to share.” I returned the smile. Little did he know that I actually enjoyed such things.

“You asked. I simply answered. What do you like to do outside of work? I shared something personal, so you have to, too.” His sparkling brown eyes met mine in an unspoken challenge. Things had swiftly moved from friendly to flirting, and I was okay with that. Not that I normally found older men attractive, but I liked how bold he was. Somehow, he managed to find the balance between being extremely forward without crossing over into creepy.
