With a killer on the loose, he may have no choice.

Ellie’s determined to find her father no matter the cost. But as she and her gorgeous mountain of a guide fight their way through an unforgiving wilderness, they find themselves in the crosshairs of a dangerous man in search of revenge. And they are now his prey…

Review:

This book pushed buttons I didn’t even know I had.

Me usually: Beard? No thank you. Grunts instead of talking? Makes me crazy. Virgin hero over the age of 21? Puh-lease.

Me, with George: OMG, YES!

Gone Too Deep is an excellent example of opposites attracting, and a darn good mystery/suspense story to boot. Iloved Ellie and George! When she started interpreting his grunts into complete sentences in her head? Just. Too. Funny. We only see things from his POV a very few times–but boy, do those times pack a punch. Every single one made me smile (at least at some point, because a few of them were at some really intense parts of the book). Since he’s essentially non-communicative anyway, having the majority of the book from Ellie’s POV (with a few other exceptions) really worked.

And OMG. Ellie and George. Did I mention that I love them? They must show up again in future books set in the world–and not just because part of Ellie’s problem remains unresolved at the end of this one. I gotta have me more Ellie and George time. Lots of it 🙂

I gotta say, though, reading about their trek through the woods made me appreciate indoor plumbing more than ever. And I am a huge fan of indoor plumbing–ask anyone. Huge.

Now I’ve got to go read the rest of this series to catch up and be ready for Chris’s book. ( In Safe Hands ) The poor guy needs to redeem himself for the major fail he had in this one–I’m pretty sure it wasn’t all his fault (and can I just say, I knew the guy who ends up being a bad guy wasn’t on the up-and-up! I am totally going to be looking for clues in books .5 through 2 now!) but still, I’m sure he’s feeling pretty bad about it…

And not just because he’s not GEORGE. 😉

A Conversation with Katie Ruggle, Author of GONE TOO DEEP (Search & Rescue #3)

GONE TOO DEEP comes out Tuesday (8/2) but you can read my review now!
conversation

Welcome, Katie! What 5 things should readers know about you?

  1. I have three chickens, to which I am abnormally attached.
  2. I am a self-admitted forensics nerd.
  3. The phrase, “C’mon! It’ll be fun!” is my Kryptonite, and it has led me into all sorts of dangerous/uncomfortable/fascinating/occasionally actually fun situations.
  4. Of all the Search and Rescue characters, George from Gone Too Deep is totally my favorite.
  5. I’m a complete pantser and have no clue where my books will end up when I start them.

I’m with you on #3—the fact that he’s the only one whose story I’ve read so far is a minor detail 😉 He’s going to be a hard act to follow!

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

The setting was inspired by my real-life off-grid home in the Colorado Rockies. It was easy to write about the cold and wind and snow (and did I mention the cold?) when there was a blizzard howling outside. Character-wise, I wanted to feature first responders. After working with cops and volunteering with firefighters, I am completely in awe of their courage. They’re also a funny bunch.

Wait, it’s cold? I didn’t get that from the book at all 😉

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I’ve been writing since I learned to read at age four. Once I discovered how wonderful books could be, I dreamed of becoming an author. It occurred to me a number of years ago that, in order to be published, I needed to actually finish something. I’m not sure why it took me so long to figure that out.

LOL, that is true—speaking from personal experience, DENIAL can keep you from figuring it out (or at least from admitting you’ve figured it out!)

What are you working on right now?

I recently finished the first book in my Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit series (out in 2017), and I just completed the final (final!) edits on the fourth book in the Search and Rescue series, In Safe Hands.

Awesome!

What can readers look for from you in the next year?

All the loose ends and mysteries and plot twists will be wrapped up in October, when the last Search and Rescue book, In Safe Hands, comes out. In 2017, the Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit series will be released. There will be women on the run, heroic dogs, hot cops and lots of explosions—what more could anyone ask for?

Hmmm, yeah. That’s about it. I can’t think of a single thing… 😉

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Bubbly Ellie’s a city girl. Quiet George loves the mountains. Can these complete opposites survive the wilds—and a killer bent on revenge?

Perfect! Thanks so much, Katie!

Grand Finale Blitz and Giveaway! SOPHIE’S PATH by Catherine Lanigan (Shores of Indian Lake #6)

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Book Tour Grand Finale for
Sophie’s Path
By Catherine Lanigan

We hope you enjoyed coming along with us and Frenchie, as we got to know more about Sophie’s and Jack’s stories! If you missed any of the tour stops, go back and check them out now…

Launch – From Frenchie’s Point of View

Bark! Sorry. Hi! My name is Frenchie. I’m a six and a half pound Yorkie Poo and I’m here to welcome you to “The Shores of Indian Lake” series by Catherine Lanigan. If you are returning to our small town, I’m glad to meet you, too. This is a new role for me, being a star, I mean. I’ve been a rescue dog, which wasn’t fun. I like to have a family. In fact, I have to have humans to love. Humans can be fun but they can also be pretty clueless about the essentials in life. Take Sophie Mattuchi and Jack Carter, for instance. I thought I’d never get these two together.

Katie’s Clean Book Collection – Review

“I adored Frenchie, the dog, who really helped thread the story line together. The characters are multifaceted and have depth. I love the process they each developed in. This is a town that I would love to read more about.

I recommend this to readers who enjoy a clean romance with good characters and depth.”

Rockin’ Book Reviews – Excerpt

Still, the guy moved with the grace of a panther. He was the kind she couldn’t help being attracted to. Her nerve endings sizzled as if touched with electrodes. She couldn’t stop the pounding of blood through her veins that didn’t come from exercise. It was automatic. She was being Sophie.

Brooke Blogs – Sophie Mattuchi

Jeremy was a heroin addict. Sometimes he would pass out and forget to feed me or give me water. He loved me very much and I loved him. That’s when he decided he had to give me up. The day we met Sophie, I knew she had a heart as big as outdoors.

Hardcover Feedback – Review

“I really liked Sophie. I loved her desire to help others, how she volunteered and helped her friends, but I didn’t like how she stretched herself so thinly…but thought it was nice she had people in her life that cared and tried to keep her in check.”

Wishful Endings – This or That

Are you guys ready to get to know a little more about Catherine? Here we go:

Chocolate or fruity candy?
Chocolate… Always

I’m with you there 100%. 🙂 Read a book or watch TV?
Read and read more. I seldom watch television anymore, but I do watch movies on DVD.

Nicole’s Book Musings – Jack Carter

Meeting Jack for a little dog like me was pretty intimidating at first. He’s a big guy. Strong. And handsome—for a human. He looks like that movie star, Hugh Jackman. Jack’s been running for years. The first thought in my head was that if I came to live with him, he might want me to run with him. He has long legs. Mine are short and I knew this wasn’t going to work.

EskieMama Reads – Excerpt

Sophie continued drying his pants’ legs, pretending she hadn’t heard what he’d just said. She was thankful she was on the floor because being this close to Jack, in this intimate setting, had turned her bones to jelly.

deal sharing aunt – Interview

What would you like my readers to know?

I especially love to hear from readers. It is from your comments and desires that I steer my course of the next book. God willing, I hope to write 26 Shores of Indian Lake stories in all. In each of the up-coming books, I introduce new characters who will have their own stories in the future. Mrs. Beabots will always be the anchor that holds everyone together, the matchmaker who wants to see every one happy.

Colorimetry – Humans Can be So Silly

As a dog, I hear a lot of gossip and advice-giving. I heard every word of Sophie’s concern for me when she and Mrs. Beabots were making tarts for the Recovery Alliance.

Jack’s office is a hot-bed of confidential material. Of course, this is due to his clients who are buying insurance to protect their children and families. But sometimes, they don’t want insurance for errant children or grandchildren. Sometimes they have lost their jobs and have to stop their premiums. Or some have medical issues. It’s really sad what humans have to deal with sometimes. No wonder they need us dogs so desperately to love them.

Getting Your Read On – Review

“. . . but the story is a good one and worth sticking with. If you love a gentle romance with slow build, you will love this book.”

underneath the covers – Nurses Make Great Girlfriends

I’ve decided that if I were a human and since I’m female, I’d be a nurse like Sophie. For starters, even though she was on her “self-improvement” regime and she was eating healthy, her nursing career also taught her that we all only live once.

Falling Leaves – Review

“I definitely recommend this book to everyone, whether you’re in the middle of struggle or you’re just content with your life.

A story of trust, forgiveness, hope, pain, death and love that you will cherish.”

Her choice. His consequences.

Nurse Sophie Mattuchi has seen a lot of angry patients in the ER, but no one’s ever rattled her like Jack Carter. He has no right to blame her for his friend’s death. Sophie did everything she could. Didn’t she? Yet his accusations sting, and that sets off all kinds of internal alarms. She’s never cared this much about any man’s opinion of her. But Jack is different. He stirs up feelings. Strong feelings. Guilt. Anger. Attraction. Curiosity. Sympathy. Sophie’s definitely not interested in Jack, but even if she was, he’d never forgive her for the decision she made that night in the hospital. Would he?

New Release Review! DIRTY WORK by Chelle Bliss and Brenda Rothert (A Filthy Politics novel)

DWblogtourbanner
BLURB:

From authors Chelle Bliss and Brenda Rothert comes a smoldering standalone enemies to lovers romance that will, ahem…check all your boxes.
Reagan:
I hate him. Jude Titan is everything that’s wrong with the male sex: cocky, domineering and loaded with swagger. Oh, and did I mention he’s a Republican? Yeah, the guy’s so conservative he leans to the right when walking. And lucky me, I’m running against him for Senate. But I’ve got plenty of fight in me. A golden boy war hero opponent with a smile that leaves melted panties in its wake? Bring. It. On.
Jude:

Damn, she’s sexy. Reagan Preston intrigues me from the moment I lay eyes on her. And speaking of laying…I want between those thighs. But I want to make her burn for me first. Every debate and stolen moment is foreplay for us. She claims she hates me, but her body tells a different story. I plan to win this election, but I also want to win the sharp, fiery Democrat who captures my attention like no woman ever has. Politics is filthy, just like all the things I want to do to Reagan Preston.

DW_TeaserNEW1Review:

Why can’t real-life politicians be like these two? Sigh…

I was a little worried about signing up to read a book that centers around a political campaign–I mean, how far away is November, and I’m already pretty much campaigned out–but my fears were unfounded. This book is pretty much how I wish campaigns were run…thank goodness for fiction, once again doing its part to make real life more tolerable 😉

I enjoyed Dirty Work–and really hope there will be more where this one came from. (The cover says its “A filthy politics novel,” so I’m cautiously optimistic on that front.) Jude and Reagan were so much fun to root for–whether they were on opposing sides of the campaign, a secret item, or a couple out in the open, I was in favor of every version of them 🙂

At just 4% in, I knew this book was going to be a keeper. All it took was this conversation between Reagan and her bestie/campaign manager, Alexis:

“Lex, being from a family with a history in politics is good and bad. It’s mostly bad against Jude Titan. He’s a war hero, returning home to shake up the establishment. No baggage. Just a chiseled jawline and a huge smile and a Medal of Honor around his neck.”

Lexi gets a dreamy look on her face, and I shove her. “Stop picturing him wearing nothing but the medal.”

“I wasn’t,” she says, her fair cheeks darkening.

“You were.”

“I may have been,” she admits.

Seriously. These are my people. Is there anyone who isn’tpicturing him wearing just the medal now? I didn’t think so.

A decorated former Marine. Plus he’s got tats. And fighting for military vets is a big part of his platform. Basically, he’s my catnip.

I was concerned about how their running for the same office would be resolved–would Reagan have to put aside her ambitions for his?–and to be honest, the way in which that all comes down in the main reason for this being 4 stars instead of the 4 1/2 it was heading toward for most of the book. It was better than I feared, but I would have liked to have seen the outcome be more even between the two.

Still, I really liked Jude, Reagan, and Alexis, and really hope there will be more from these two authors.

“Come ride with me anytime,” he said, helping her dismount from the horse when they were back at the barn. He didn’t place his hands on her ass this time, which was both regrettable and a relief. Instead, he steadied her waist with his hands. She turned to face him after he helped her to the ground, and was surprised to find how close they were standing. Close enough that the brim of his hat on her head nearly touched his chin.

“This belongs to you.” She took off the hat and went up on her tiptoes to put it back where it belonged. Their eyes locked as the movement brought them even closer together. Her heart bucked again, like a wild horse ready to bolt.

Returning to flat feet, she started to step away. Needed to step away. Too bad Bon-Bon was still behind her, blocking her escape.

“Julie?” he said, making her feet pause and her heart stutter. She liked the sound of her name on his lips. Low, deep.

“Yes?” she asked breathlessly.

He reached out his hand to tame a strand of her hair brushing against her cheek. “You have what I call hat-hair.” He took his time smoothing the hair around her ear, awakening every nerve in her body. Then he slowly dipped, keeping his blue-as-the-ocean eyes on hers, and kissed her.

She melted into him instead of stepping away. The side of his cheek on hers was warm and inviting, intoxicating. His tongue tapped softly against hers, just once, as he swept his hand behind her neck, pulling her gently toward him.

A soft moan escaped her throat, betraying her. She parted her lips for him, inviting him in, begging him to stay, which he did for just a moment longer. Then he broke it off, keeping it sweet. The kiss had threatened to be more, though. It had threatened to take her inside that barn, lay her down on a blanket of hay, and be a whole hell of a lot more.

“See you later, Lawson,” she said, forcing herself to step away from him, away from the horse and the barn. She turned toward her car and didn’t look back. Otherwise, her hormones were going to win and drag this cowboy into the barn and slam the stall doors behind them.

“See you later, Julie,” he called after her.

Get ready for scorching hot Alphas, a spitfire heroine, and a breathtaking ending!

The Dark and Dirty tale series is best enjoyed in order.
Reading Order:
Book #1 Desiring Red
Book #2 Dominating Red
Book #3 Dangerously Red

Review:

This one didn’t end up going where I thought it would, given the series start (and the blurbs, and the covers–I know, I know, but I keep expecting things…) but ultimately they were entertaining.

I feel like I need to re-read the first two books again (Desiring Red and  Dominating Red) just to check the consistency of the antagonist–one of the characters ends up doing a total turnaround from what they originally appear to be, and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. Things end up working out well for Ivy in the end–but does the change make it too easy?

All three books in the series are out now, and even back-to-back they’d be a quick read–not standalones, though; they really need to be read in order. If you’re partial to werewolves and like your romances heavy on the steam but fairly light on plot, you’d probably enjoy this series.

Excerpt:

She lifted a hand to his face and cupped his jaw. “You’ve been through enough. You have a great life here. A good job, great friends, everyone in town respects and likes you, all the single girls can’t wait for the day you look their way. I’m not going to come into town for a week, or a month, turn everything upside down, and leave. That’s not right.” She ran her thumb over his cheek and smiled. “So we’re good?”

Panic blipped through his chest. He covered her hand with his to keep her from leaving, while he fought for something to say that would fix everything and make her stay. But she was so freaking rational, so goddamned logical, he was having a hard time finding anything to work with. And with the bar, his grandfather, his family, his aunt, and his job in the middle of this, he didn’t even know if he should.

“Delaney, let’s—”

“It’s not a big deal.” She curled her fingers around his and lowered their hands. “And I’m not going to make it one. I just wanted you to know so you wouldn’t worry. I’m good, so we’re good.” She nodded. Smiled again. “Okay?”

Say okay and let her go.

He shifted on his feet.

One little word.

Let her go. Right your world.

“No.” He heaved a sigh and rubbed his eyes. “No, it’s not okay.”

“Ethan . . .”

Her goddammit-I’m-barely-holding-on-here plea was lost on him. He slipped his arms around her waist and pulled her warm little body against his.

She pushed at his shoulders, leaning away. “You know I’m right. You know it’s what you need.”

“No.” He lifted a hand and cupped the back of her neck. “You are what I need.”

He pulled her mouth to his and kissed her. She mewled, the sound frustrated, but her hands fisted in his shirt and held him close.

Ethan softened his mouth, tilted his head, and kissed her again. This time, she whimpered and her body loosened. The feel of her melting against him pushed heat through his body. He moaned and slid the hand at her neck into the silky strands of her hair, and when she parted her lips to gasp, he pushed his tongue into her mouth.

She opened to him immediately, hungrily, and met the stroke of his tongue. The warm, wet slide made everything Ethan had been holding back—the lust, the confusion, the fear, the anger, the want, the longing—break through his barriers like a flood. The wave wiped everything from his mind but Delaney and brought profound relief.

With nothing else invading his thoughts, he focused on the luscious cushion of her breasts against his chest, the soft mound of her sex against his cock, the feel of her small waist beneath his arm.

And, God, her mouth. Wet. Warm. Wild.

He tore out of the kiss, lifting her into his arms and starting for the house. “Fuck, I need you.”

She bit her way down his neck, and tingles spread across his skin, but at the same time she murmured breathless attempts at logic. “We can’t keep doing this. Too complicated. If anyone finds out . . .”

He pushed his door open, covered her mouth with his, and let his tongue talk her out of leaving. By the time they were inside, she had her legs wrapped at his hips, one hand deep in his hair, the other working his belt open.

The thrill of winning her over spread through him like fire. He kicked the door closed, and Delaney pulled out of the kiss, breathless, both hands moving to the buttons of his shirt. Turning a circle, he searched for the closest horizontal surface. But his kitchen was a mess, his sofa was covered with laundry, and his dining room table was strewn with paperwork.

Then her mouth found his again, licking and biting and sucking, while her hands worked on his shirt, and his desperation mounted.

“This is the last time,” she murmured between kisses. “Not happening again.”

Screw that. He turned a half circle and rested her butt on a wide, deep windowsill. Her thighs opened, and she pulled him between her legs.

Review:

A new-to-me author I’ll definitely be reading more from in the future!

I really liked both Delaney and Ethan, and the angsty they-can’t-be-together aspects of their relationship were nicely done. The chemistry between the two of them was great; they probably could have shown a tad bit more restraint but on the whole I’m glad they didn’t 😉 I loved that she was in construction and that she got where she was without a fancy college degree, too.

The omniscient small-town atmosphere and the longstanding family feuds were very believable. I also enjoyed the families you’re born with vs the families you choose for yourself theme, and the one of choosing to start over. There were some very enjoyable secondary characters–Delaney’s Aunt Phoebe, her sister Avery, and Ethan’s grandfather especially–to keep things interesting.

All good stuff!

What did make me a little crazy though, was the lack of communication between the hero and heroine. I don’t quite understand why Ethan didn’t tell Delaney about his brewery idea (and why didn’t it occur to her? It kinda seemed like the next obvious step for him to this reader). Other than helping out with the relationship black moment, what was the purpose of that? I also still don’t understand why (view spoiler)

Really, though, the fun parts of this one far outweighed the aggravating ones. It’s first in a new series (future heroines to be Delaney’s sisters, I hope? Since most of Ethan’s family are less-than-heroic…), and on the strength of this one, I’ll definitely be in line to check out book two.

Rating: 4 stars / B

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt:

Alex’s hand came up slowly to cradle the side of her face, encouraging her to tilt her head, and she did. He deepened the kiss then, his tongue running across her lips and coaxing them to open for him. She opened with a sigh, and his tongue swept into her mouth, gently tasting. She kissed him back in return, leaning into him until she had one hand braced against his hard chest.

A needy moan escaped her, and he responded in kind. When he lifted his mouth from hers, she almost tipped into him, her knees not holding her upright anymore and her head spinning. Wow.

She took not one, but several long breaths to clear her head, looking down at a black and tan face staring up at her with soulful, dark eyes. Souze wasn’t shy about watching, apparently.

The thought brought her the rest of the way to her senses, because weird. Yeah. Weird.

She took a step back, and Alex let her. He’d done that since the beginning. Letting her go if she wanted. So why was it so hard to leave now even if she kept saying she should?

“Thank you,” she told him, not looking up into his eyes.

“But?” Alex’s voice came cool, deep, and so sexy it just wasn’t fair.

“But I should go. Especially because this is obviously not a professional thing now.”

“No. But none of your previous employers particularly cared if you left, did they?” He sounded reasonable. “Did they bother to try to check on you?”

“Not that I know of.” She said it slowly. She’d had her phone with her, and she’d been checking her e-mail. Both big mistakes, she knew now. But she’d been paid under the table and they didn’t really have a way to contact her after she disappeared.

“I think that’s a little odd.” Rojas lifted his hand, giving her plenty of time to avoid him, and brushed her hair back from her face. “Maybe this time, it wouldn’t hurt to have someone care about whether you disappear.”

New Release and Giveaway! THE KING IN THE STONE by Carmen Ferreiro-Esteban (Two Moon Princess #2)

The King in the Stone
Carmen Ferreiro-Esteban
(Two Moon Princess, #2)
Publication date: July 25th 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Historical, Young Adult

A full moon,
A silver key,
And the unbending passion of two young lovers
will bring hope to a defeated kingdom
and, through their sorrow, deliver a king
who will change its fate.

Vivid visions have haunted Andrea since her arrival in northern Spain. In her visions, the ruins of the medieval village she’s excavating comes alive, and, around the fires burning in the no longer buried hearths, she sees people dressed in furs sharpening old fashioned swords.
Even more upsetting for her that the headaches her visions leave is the fact that Julián appears in them—Julián, the king from her world whose rejection she is trying hard to forget.

But when a slide bury Andrea under the mountain, Julian comes searching for her. Soon after they are reunited under the mountains, the full moon opens a portal and sends them back a thousand years into the past, to a time right after the Spaniards have been defeated by the Arabian invaders.

Separated by a bitter winter, Andrea and Julian are caught in opposite sides in the battle between the Spanish last unconquered settlements and the Arabian army. A battle for survival that will determine the fate of a kingdom and demand of them the ultimate sacrifice: As the Arabs close on the mountains, Julián makes a decision that will break Andrea’s heart and change them forever.

EXCERPT:

In the following excerpt from The King in the Stone, Julián makes a fateful decision.

I don’t know how long I remained by the cliff staring down at Andrea’s broken body, so unnaturally still in her white shroud of snow. I don’t know how long I remained by the cliff lost in a world of my own. A world beyond feelings, beyond reason. A world in which, I came to believe, time could flow backwards, and as long as I didn’t move, didn’t breathe, it was still possible to reverse its course. Andrea would rise from the ledge and climb to my side, and her blood would be warm again inside her body and not a red stain over the snow.

I don’t know how long I remained by the cliff dreaming impossible dreams. Then somewhere down in the valley, a horse neighed and broke the spell.
I shivered. The rush of the fight had left me by now, and the bitter wind blowing through the mountain had covered my body with a frozen dust. If I didn’t leave soon I would freeze to death. Forcing my stiff legs to move, I turned my back to the ledge and started walking.

I didn’t remember going back into the cave and retrieving the sword and the knife from the bear’s body. I didn’t remember grabbing the cloak or picking up Andrea’s arrow from the ground or walking down the mountain. The next thing I remember is someone calling my name.

I shook my head to clear my mind and looked around. I was back in the oak grove where we had tethered the horses, and Irene stood in front of me.

I let go of the hilt of the sword I’d instinctively grabbed, and nodded to the girl whose waif-like face was tense with fear.

“Julián?”

I tried to talk. But no words came.

Irene moved closer and reached for my face. “You’re hurt, Julián. Let me help you.”

“There is no time. We must go. Now. Get the horses ready. I’ll get Theodorica.”

Turning my back on her, I entered the copse.

Her feet and hands bound, a dirty rag over her mouth, Theodorica was sitting on a stump. Her eyes full of contempt didn’t leave mine as I approached her, and when I removed her gag, she spat at me.

In anger, I lifted her and held her against the closest tree. Theodorica struggled like a wild animal trying to break free, and as I fought her back, something snapped inside my mind, turning the throbbing ache at Andrea’s loss into a feral urge to make Theodorica mine. Forcing her face still with one hand, I kissed her. I kissed her long and hard. Not because I cared for her, but because Andrea was dead and she alive, and in the aftermath of death we crave life.

I kissed her out of pain, out of anger and despair. Out of hate. I kissed her until her body grew willing under mine. Only then, I pulled back.
Without a word, I cut her bonds.

Theodorica stared at me.

“You got your wish, my lady,” I said in answer to the question she had not asked. “I’m coming with you to the Arab’s camp.”
