New Release Review! TEACH YOUR HEART by Tracey Alvarez (Far North #3)

Some lessons are harder to learn than others…

Doctor O-for-Awesome Owen Bennett is all about fixing broken things. Then the arrival of his orphaned nieces and nephew for twelve weeks causes his workaholic life to plummet into chaos. Hiring the beautiful but unpredictable Gracie Cooper as a live-in nanny might just get him out of a tight spot…or it could seduce him into a reckless affair.

After four years flitting around Europe, waitress/dog-walker/au-pair Gracie Cooper has returned home to New Zealand. Her plans to hang out with her big brother change when Owen offers a perfect solution to her crippling university debt. In spite of her sexy-stick-in-the-mud boss, she’ll spend fun days playing in Bounty Bay’s sand and surf with three cute kids. At summer’s end she’ll follow the sun overseas again.

Gracie and Owen’s opposites-attract connection is so unexpected and powerful that their foundations are rocked. But some things aren’t easy to fix. Some past hurts can’t be run from forever. And the lessons they teach each other risk breaking their hearts.

I am loving the characters of the Far North series just as much as the Due South ones!

Gracie Cooper, little sister of Glen from Know Your Heart , is at loose ends in her life. Unable to stomach staying with their overbearing and demanding father for even a weekend, she heads off to visit her big bro and his fiancee until her next job calls her…only she doesn’t actually make it there, not really. She’s waylaid along the way by two babysitter escapees, one who looks suspiciously like a human minion and the other who clearly needs a trip to the emergency room.

The emergency room where their uncle and temporary guardian, Dr. Owen “O is for Awesome” Bennett works. Coincidence? Of course not! How else can we throw these two obviously-opposites-but-still-clearly-meant-for-each-other people together? 😉

His babysitter has just quit, she needs a temporary job, the kids will go back to his mother’s in two months…what could go wrong?

LOL…like you have to ask!

I adored Gracie and Owen (and all the different “O is for…” names that she and her friends will come up with throughout the book), and Morgan, Will (or William, never Willie, for a reason I agree with but that still makes me LOL), and Charlie (NOT Charlotte!) were such a fun group of kids–not at all plot-moppety. Watching Owen learn to loosen up once again and Gracie finally find some roots was such a good time. And Owen’s ever-evolving “house rules” made me laugh out loud–and wince–because yeah, Legos hurt. I’m with you there, Dr. McDreamy.

Though the couples from the first two books do play roles here, this one would work fine as a standalone if you haven’t had a chance to read them yet. (But read them later! Trust me, you won’t be sorry.) And fortunately, there’s still a few suspiciously single characters floating around town who clearly need their own HEAs, so there’s good hope that we’ll see more of Gracie, Owen, Morgan, Will, and Charlie in the future too 🙂

New Release Blitz! TEMPTED BY THE GARGOYLE by Lisa Carlisle (Stone Sentries #1)

Meet your perfect match this Saturday night–or your perfect match for the night.

The eclipse of the red Supermoon sends crowds into Boston for an evening hyped up for a night of passion, one not to be missed. Boston police officer Larissa Riley wants nothing to do with the media-driven event, but her friend convinces her they need a night out after all they’ve gone through. They visit a new gothic-themed club where Larissa is disturbed by the attractive stranger eying her.

Roman, a gargoyle shifter and commander of the Stone Sentries, patrols from the rooftop of a club on the night of the eclipse. The Supermoon bodes danger and he puts all his sentries on watch. When a blast of dark magic soars past him, he searches for its origin and fixes on a brunette. Something about her is different, demanding all senses be on high alert. Is she dangerous? Or is she in danger?

Deciding a night with a hot stranger would be good for her, Larissa invites Roman back to her hotel, unaware he is surveilling her. The night takes a dark turn as secrets are uncovered and danger moves in. Her beloved city is under attack. Larissa must decide who to trust before all is lost, including the fate of her closest friend.

While surveying the city from above, a dark-haired woman on the roof caught Roman’s attention. She stood ramrod-straight and she fidgeted with her glass. Something about her discomfort triggered his gargoyle instincts, making him observe her more closely.

When he scanned her from head to toe, he didn’t gain any insight other than how attractive she was. Her hair was rich and lush, flowing in loose waves over her shoulders. It had a burgundy tone from the various lighting fixtures around the deck. Her wide eyes searched her surroundings. What was she looking for? His gaze traveled down her body, studying how well it was encased in a form-fitting black dress. He lingered on her killer curves, fueling his imagination with sordid fantasies of what it would be like to touch them.

He snapped his eyes away. He was supposed to be gauging what had set off his senses.

Seconds later, his gaze returned to her, despite his admonition to himself. Her expression turned troubled. A strong reaction rose within him, one he couldn’t read. He rubbed the back of his neck. Something about her put all his senses on edge; he had to keep an eye on her, although he had no indication why.

She spoke to a blonde woman next to her, and he turned his head to focus on their conversation. With all the chatter in the room, he couldn’t catch it, despite his acute sense of hearing.

What troubled the brunette? An instinct to protect her kicked in. The pull toward her was compelling, a sensual onslaught that overpowered him.

Remember why you’re here.

He stepped back, both mentally and physically separating himself from the woman, and shielded himself behind the bar. That compulsion was one he’d never experienced, and not knowing what it meant bothered him all the more. All the uncertainty about tonight had him on edge.

Turning away, he gulped in the cool night air. It invigorated him for only a moment. What hit him next almost knocked him off his feet—a sudden whoosh of energy. It blasted past him with immense force and power, indicative of dark magic.

A gut feeling made him turn to locate the brunette, and he scrutinized her. He sensed something unusual about her than the other humans on the roof. Was she the source of that dark magic? He opened a mental link to communicate with Arto.

There’s a woman on the roof I’m going to keep an eye on.

Is she in danger? Or is she dangerous? Arto asked.

Good question. That’s what I plan on finding out. I sensed dark magic and will investigate further.

His triggers were now on full alert. Whoever she was, he wouldn’t let her out of his sight. Not until he figured out who—or what—she was.

And why she had that effect on him.

New Release Review and Giveaway! THE DUKE OF DECEPTION by Darcy Burke (The Untouchables #3)

About the Book:

After five years on the Marriage Mart, Miss Aquilla Knox is ready for spinsterhood until a benefactress steps in to help her secure a husband. Only Aquilla doesn’t actually want to marry—her failure is entirely on purpose. When the earl she’s nicknamed the Duke of Deception sets his sights on her, she refuses to be drawn in by her attraction to him. If there’s one thing she knows it’s that a gentleman is never what he seems.

Edward Bishop, Earl of Sutton, has a reputation for courting young misses and dropping them without a second thought. This has earned him a reputation for deceit, a description he can’t refute because he does in fact, harbor secrets and will do anything—deceive anyone—to ensure they don’t come to light. As he comes to know the charming Miss Knox, his resolve is tested. However, trust comes at a price and Ned won’t pay with his heart.

The soft utterance came from the door behind Ned. He pivoted and listened, wondering if he’d imagined the sound amidst the steady pit-pat of rain.

“Ahem.” The statement came more loudly. “Pardon me, but might I ask a favor?”

Ned turned fully toward the feminine voice coming from the dim veranda. He pulled the door wider. “Come in.”

“No.” She stood just outside. Ned could only make out her vague shape. “I can’t come into the ballroom. I need to enter another way and get to the retiring room. I’m afraid I was caught in this rain and…” Her voice trailed off.

Ned strained his eyes to try to see her features, but it was dark and she was standing too far away from the light of the ballroom. “I believe there’s another door along the terrace.” He gestured behind her. He’d visited Middlegrove House a few times and had been outside before.

“Yes, but it’s locked. That is why I need a favor. I don’t suppose you could find Lady Satterfield and ask her to unlock that door for me?”

Lady Satterfield and not Lady Middlegrove? He glanced back at the crowded ballroom and doubted he could find either of them, especially quickly. “Are you out there unprotected in the rain?” She had to be freezing. It was a cool night amidst a particularly cold spring.

“Er…yes.” She sounded resigned. “It was not my best idea.” Her calm tone carried an edge of humor that Ned found intriguing. He would’ve expected most women to be far more agitated by such a predicament.

Clearly she was alone, and he wondered what she was doing out there by herself. However that hardly mattered while she was standing there likely shivering. “Go to the door, and I’ll ensure it’s unlocked posthaste.”

She exhaled sharply, and the sound carried a thrum of relief. “Thank y-you.”

Yes, she was shivering.

He considered handing her his coat through the open doorway, but that would invite unwanted attention and scandal—something Ned was always careful to avoid.

“I’ll hurry.” He left the doorway and cut around the edge of the ballroom, making his way to the card room next door. He wasn’t exactly sure which room the locked terrace door opened into, but suspected it was just on the other side of this one.

He ought to find Lady Middlegrove or a retainer or even Lady Satterfield, since the young woman had asked for her, but he was too concerned with getting her inside as quickly as possible. And since he didn’t see any of those people, he decided to help her himself.

He left the card room and looked around to discern if anyone was about to pay him any mind. Satisfied that he was alone and unobserved, he went into the next room, which appeared to be Lord Middlegrove’s office and closed the door firmly behind him. A low fire burned in the grate as he walked swiftly toward the exterior door. After unbolting it, he opened it wide.

Standing at the threshold looking little better than a drowned cat was a young woman, her face pale and her eyes wide. She hugged her arms around her waist and stepped inside.

He took her gently by the arm and pulled her farther into the room before closing the door sharply behind her. “Come to the fire.”

Her peach-colored dress was sodden and dark. Wet curls stuck to her temples and cheeks. A droplet of rain slid from her nose.

“Th-thank y-y-you.” The words trembled from her mouth like a newborn foal as she moved to stand in front of the fire. She stuck her hands out, warming her palms.

“Give me those.” He took her left hand and pulled off the damp glove then repeated the action with the right. Uncertain of what to do with them, he set them on the mantel.

She looked at him then scanned the room. “Wh-where is L-lady Satterfield?”

“I didn’t see her. I thought it prudent to get you inside as quickly as possible.”

Her eyes widened briefly before narrowing to scrutinize him. “W-we’re in here alone?”

“Regrettably, but no one saw me, and no one will learn we are here.” He crossed back to the door he’d used to enter and locked it. “Better?” he asked when he returned to her side.

“N-no, I’m not at all certain that’s better. N-now we’re l-locked in a room together.” She cast him an ambivalent glance before turning her attention to the fire. She edged closer and turned her hands to warm the backs.

“Just what were you doing on the terrace?”

She closed her eyes briefly before cocking her head to glance at him. “T-trying to be discreet? My gown has a tear and I wanted to find the retiring room without having to cross the ballroom. I thought I could take a shortcut via the terrace. Unfortunately it was raining—softly at first, so I hurried. B-but the door was locked, and the heavens decided to punish my foolishness by making it rain harder.”

“You weren’t being foolish.”

She cast him a glance heavy with doubt. “I appreciate your d-defense of my character, but I was.”

“You didn’t know the door would be locked or that it was going to rain like that. You were trying to be sensible.”

She laughed softly, but it quickly turned into a shiver. Her shoulders hunched.

Ned shrugged out of his coat and draped it about her shoulders. She turned her head sharply and gave him another wide-eyed look. “As long as we’re ignoring propriety…” he said. “Just wear my coat for a few minutes while I determine how to get you out of the house and on your way home.”

“Y-yes, that would be lovely.” She didn’t sound disappointed in the slightest. In fact, Ned would’ve said she sounded pleased. Enthusiastic even, particularly given the smile tugging at her mouth. Perhaps her attitude was simply due to her predicament. What young woman was happy to leave Lady Middlegrove’s ball? And wasn’t completely overcome when caught in a rainstorm in a ballgown?

The kind that piqued his interest.

Another “Untouchable” bites the dust!

The Duke of Deception is Aquilla and Ned’s story. It’s a bit ironic that the secret nickname Ned, the Earl of Sutton, was given by Aquilla, Ivy, and Lucy is the Duke of Deception when Aquilla and Ivy are hiding some pretty major secrets themselves. We learn Aquilla’s here–and Ned’s–but still have to wait for Ivy’s…I’m pretty sure Ms. Burke will make it worth the wait, though 😉

But really, girls. Pots, kettles, equal blackness…but I digress.

I liked Aquilla and Ned, both on their own and together. They made a great couple, even if their courtship did end up getting a bit fast tracked due to circumstances. I understood why they both felt the need to keep their secrets–even from each other–but wish that they had come to light earlier in the book than they did. Once the secrets were revealed, everything happened very, very quickly and then bam! the story was over. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of them together afterwards, watching them living their lives without so much coming between them. The drama of Aquilla’s former suitor and that of her parents didn’t quite feel finished either. Still, I did enjoy this one quite a bit.

Both Aquilla and Ned have had a whole lot to deal with in their lives and they really deserved to find not only their HEAs, but also to finally find the person that they could each be themselves around. At the same time their story gives you a glimpse into how the 19th century dealt with issues like mental illness and domestic abuse (hint: the answer is, not well) and really makes you appreciate how far we’ve come in dealing with the former, at least. George’s portion of the story is heartbreaking (though I really, really want to know what his diagnosis would be today–we don’t learn enough about what happened to him, likely because the characters don’t know either), and Aquilla’s mother and sister-in-law are even worse off. Fingers crossed that Aquilla’s finally able to make a difference for them eventually as well…

But Aquilla and Ned. Soooo good together. 🙂

Deception is book three in the series but should function well as a standalone. The couples from books one and two ( The Forbidden Duke and The Duke of Daring ) do play parts in this one, but if you haven’t read their stories (yet!) you should still do just fine with this one.

Bring on Ivy and the Duke of Desire–I’m ready for them!

New Release Review! HARD COMPROMISE by Samanthe Beck (Compromise Me #2)

In case you missed it, I had a chat with author Samanthe Beck about her latest book here.

Hard Compromise

by Samanthe Beck

Laurie Peterson assumes her impulsive one-night stand with sinfully sexy Sheriff Ethan Booker is the biggest surprise of the year…until her bakery burns down while she’s basking in the afterglow. It looks like her dreams are up in smoke, but then Ethan proposes a deal too tempting to resist.

Ethan has no intention of settling for a one-night stand with Laurie. Nor does he want anything to do with the women his wealthy family wants him to meet. Not when he’s waited ten years for his chance to make his move. His deal might have strings—and Laurie may not know the stakes—but nothing will stop this sexy cop from staking a real claim on her body and her heart.

So, so good!

I loved Booker, and Laurie’s not too bad either. 😉 Together, they’re absolutely awesome!

Everyone but Laurie knew from the get-go that this fake relationship was going to turn into the real thing, but watching her come to that conclusion was a lot of fun. Hot, steamy, awkward-meeting-his-mother kinds of fun. Ms. Beck definitely did not disappoint with this one–I found myself laughing almost as much as I needed to fan myself while reading this one.

The whole I’ll-wait-ten-years-for-you-to-grow-up thing was kind of random–I appreciated the prologue, don’t get me wrong; it did a great job of setting these two up for a future when she wasn’t literal “jailbait”–but why exactly ten years? Sure, she ended up being in a much better place at 26 than she was at 16, but technically anytime after she turned 21 would have been acceptable. He wasn’t that much older than her. (Plus, it kind of reminded me of another dating-you-in-ten-years comment, and though the situations are totally different, who needs that reminder?) Still, the way Booker got them started was cute. Poor Aaron and his Am Ex card.

Hard Compromise takes place concurrently with book one in the series, Compromising Her Position , so it doesn’t really matter which one you read first–they both could work as standalones, but trust me, you’re going to want the whole story so you might as well grab them both.

As well as book three–surely we’re going to get Arden’s (Rafe’s sister) story soon, yes?

New Release and Giveaway! HOME by Eleni McKnight

About the book:

Knowledge is a dangerous commodity in the Home commune, the last beacon of civilization against the fallen outside world. As Suzannah Commons begins to secretly read forbidden books, she jeopardizes her future for the forbidden love of the boy who supplies her new, dangerous habit, Silas Maars, and his family. Will her new-found knowledge be her destruction?

Suzannah is in training with the rest of the unmarried teenage girls in the Handmaiden House and Home’s laundry to become a bride when she accidentally comes upon a naked boy in one of the family quarters, Silas Maars. To see a naked man before marriage is an unforgivable sin in Home and a challenge to her precious status as a virgin, her only aspect of worth. This compromise to her purity would earn her an automatic exile in the Hard Labor Camp, a death sentence until the commune leader, Parson, sentences her to the punishment of serving Silas and his unusual family as a housekeeper. As she works for the Maars family and is isolated from the rest of the commune’s population, she discovers the frightening, threatening outside world is not as dangerous as she has been led to believe. The Maars family reveals to her that Deacon controls the population of Home by keeping them all ignorant, denying them education and books so he can teach his own twisted, corrupt, self-serving version of religion from the pulpit. As she learns the truth and begins to fall into a star-crossed love with Silas, her fate as a child bride to one of the lecherous Elders or a worker in the hard labor camp is drawing nigh.

The next night after dinner, I went to the Maars’ quarters to clean Silas’s room. “I got it,” Silas said.

“You got what-“ I saw a book in his lap. It was a giant book, covered in pictures. I had seen pictures before, but they were in school. They were rare, we didn’t have the technology to make photographs anymore. The book said LIFE in large white letters. “Silas!” I cried. “What are you doing with that? You know you’ll get in trouble if they find out you have it!”

“No, I won’t,” he said. “They don’t even notice if we keep it hidden.”

“Books are rare!”

“No, they’re not,” he chuckled. “They’ve got a whole room full of books in the Elder’s wing. On shelves and stacked on top of each other in giant piles.”

“A whole room?” I repeated, trying to imagine it. “Is that where you got these?”

“Yeah,” he said, flipping through the book. “There’s thousands of books. Tens of thousands. Maybe even a hundred thousand!”

“You’re making that up,” I said.

He showed me a beautiful printed page. It had yellowed a bit, the edges were dog-eared. I felt a chill; I never was allowed to handle something as precious as a book before. I had learned to read by a chalkboard and it helped when there were directions painted on the walls of the laundry and the directions on the cooking cards. This was special and sacred, and Silas was letting me handle it like the bag of laundry I picked up every night. I looked at the page on the book: in the middle, a picture was in black and white of a group of women dressed in pantsuits, like the mechanics in our commune, standing by some large metal thing. They were grinning, proud, brandishing tools, not ashamed to be forced into wearing pants like the hard labor whores were forced to, their hair under colorful red patterned bandanas.

Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs)

I blinked. “Real women in the militia?” I asked.

“Yeah. They used to have a militia with an entire department where they flew airplanes.”

“Airplanes are made-up.”

“They used to drop bombs on the enemies during wars. They’d blow up entire cities. And shoot each other down in air fights.”

“Men can’t fly,” I snorted.

“I’ve flown.”

“You’re making that up, you have not. It’s impossible!”

“They used to know how,” he said. “Papa says that there are people that still know. People go to places to get onto planes called aeroports. And the pilots would drive them across the world. You’ve never read a book, have you?”

A Conversation with Samanthe Beck, Author of HARD COMPROMISE (Compromise Me #2)

Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today, Samanthe!

I’m thrilled to be here, Becky! I feel like it’s a good fit, because I love to read too, and while I have never quilted, I sleep under one on pretty much a nightly basis.

LOL! Perfect match, then! 🙂

What 5 things should readers know about you?

  • I like to tell people my husband and I met in a Turkish prison, but the truth is we met in law school.
  • I love wine and chocolate, but if I had to choose one for the rest of my life, I’d choose wine.
  • I’ve lived in Georgia, Puerto Rico, Maryland, New York, and London, but my favorite place is where I live now—by the beach in Malibu, California.
  • I can name all the U.S. Presidents. Well, not the future ones, sadly, but past and current? No problem.
  • Hard Compromise is my…(doing the math…doing the math)…eleventh book! Holy crap, even I can’t believe it.

Eleventh? Awesome, and congrats! (And—Turkish prison = law school; they’re similar, surely?)

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

My heroine, Laurie Peterson, made an appearance in Compromising Her Position, (Book 1 of the Compromise Me series), and gave her relationship-addict best friend Chelsea some advice about guarding her heart. Ultimately, the advice wasn’t very good, but Laurie honestly believed what she said, and even at the time I was writing the story, I kept thinking I’d love to push Laurie into the path of a guy who would call her on her bullshit, and prove wrong all her cynical beliefs about herself and relationships. Sheriff Ethan Booker turned out to be that man. Boy, did he!

LOL, are you ever right about that! Phew! (Review coming soon, BTW 🙂 )

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I always wanted to write romance, so naturally I became a lawyer. 🙂 After thirteen years grinding away in a career I didn’t love, I’d paid off the student loans, and the second mortgage, and my husband and I decided to start a family. I found someone talented and enthusiastic to replace me at work, and I transitioned into full time mommy and part time aspiring author. (I was clearly a rookie parent because I thought, “Oh, I’ll have plenty of time to write while I’m home taking care of a baby)!

I made my first sale to Entangled Publishing in 2012, and my debut book, Private Practice, released in 2013. That makes my journey sound really fast, but, in truth, I submitted manuscripts for two years before hearing the word “Yes”! (I heard “no” many times, with respect to several submissions that will never see the light of day). I’m living, breathing proof that you should never give up on your dream!

Fantastic! Inspiring, even with all the NOs along the way…(and LOL re: your rookie parent optimism. Yes, SO MUCH TIME. Ha!)

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I’m switching between series right now. Currently I’m working on book 3 of my Love Emergency series, Emergency Attraction. This is Sinclair’s story, for those in the know, and that poor girl is getting hit with the hottest, sexiest most devastating mistake from her past. I can’t wait for you to meet him!

After I finish Emergency Attraction, I’ll be working on the third book in the Compromise Me series. This is Arden’s story. Readers meet her in Compromising Her Position, and get to know her a little bit more in Hard Compromise. I have a hot doc lined up for her, and a whole lot of naughtiness!

They both sound great—can’t wait!

What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?

I just finished Robin Bielman’s Once Upon A Royal Christmas—yep, I let Robin put me in the Christmas spirit early this year—and I absolutely ADORED it.  She delivers everything you want in a holiday story. It’s a sweet, sexy, heartwarming treat, complete with a royal ball and some Christmas magic.

I agree! It was a fun read 🙂

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

It’s a one-night stand ten years in the making! #toohotforjustonenight

Event planner Joanna McNamee is scrambling to ensure her father’s company Christmas party goes smoothly, but one disaster after another has her convinced someone is trying to sabotage her career. With the help of a man from her past who she’s still not sure she can trust, she puts the pieces together and realizes her business is the least of her problems—a cold-blooded killer is out to destroy her father and take her as his prized possession.

The last thing Deputy Ryker Kane expects is for a simple truck hijacking to throw him back into the middle of the Black Widow case he’d been forced to abandon, not to mention right into the arms of the sweet woman he’d let walk away ten years earlier. When he finds Jo Jo kidnapped and drugged, he has to use all his wits and skills honed from years as a detective to save them both. Despite the secrets between them, Ryker’s bound and determined to give them a second chance at love.

Almost there.

Snagging courage and strength from deep within, Joanna dared take a peek over her shoulder, inhaling slowly and letting the air out through her mouth. Over and over again. Nothing but darkness shrouded the road as far as she could see. Panic whipped up and circled inside her chest threatening to make her gag again.

Were they on foot?

She gave her head a good shake. The mere idea that they were close fired up the adrenaline. She wiped her arm across her mouth. Started to jog. Hurried her steps gradually. No time to lose control.

Ryker’s counting on you.

As her feet hit the loose gravel lining the station driveway, the ground shifted beneath her. Only an act of God kept her from the inevitable fall at the last second. Well, that and the wild flaying of her arms.

The sound of a car’s engine hummed off in the distance. And her entire body pulsed with a new surge of panic.

Got to keep going.

The muscles of her legs screamed in agony as she moved forward. But she ignored the pain and scanned the small station, trying to steady her ragged breath. The four pumps sat empty in front of the store, Interstate 10 looming beyond in its spaghetti bowl of twists and turns. Her gaze locked on the glass windows lining the front wall of the store’s building. A young man, not much bigger than her, worked behind the counter restacking the cigarettes. With thoughts of Ryker bleeding to death tormenting her every heartbeat, she made a beeline for the front door.

“I…I…nd…to…phone.” The clerk looked at her funny. She pulled her body through a small crack she managed to make with the door before pulling it shut behind her.

“You all right, miss?”

She bent at the waist again, trying to catch her breath and keep the nausea at bay. “Phone. I need your phone.”

“Yeah, sure, okay. Landline is on the fritz, but you can use mine.” He started to hand her his cell phone.

She couldn’t gulp down enough air to straighten. A sharp pinching pain poked against her right side. “Call 911. Need help. La Seine and a few streets over.”

He eyed her suspiciously for a moment.

He pulled the phone back in front of him and hit the numbers with his forefinger, then raised his hands high above his head. His eyes widened in horror.

“What are you doing?” Did the idiot think she was trying to rob him?

“You should have run track in high school, Joanna.”

Her breath caught. Shudders numbed her body.

No. It couldn’t be.

Author Madelle Morgan Gives Us 5 Reasons to Read CAUGHT ON CAMERA (and a giveaway!)

5 Reasons to Read Caught on Camera
by Madelle Morgan

  1. The Hollywood in Muskoka series is for movie-lovers. Caught on Camera, Book 1, includes many movie and TV show references. Chapter titles are spoofs of romantic comedy film titles; e.g., Must Love Police Dogs, His Best Friend’s Wedding, There’s Something about Rachel, etc.

  1. Humor. It’s a romantic comedy, so the situational humor revolves around the complications from chambermaid Rachel’s deception. Sticky situations arise as Rachel tries to adapt to her temporary role as the bride’s “cousin” and bridesmaid, unbeknownst to the celebrity guests. When Mickey, a groomsman, takes a romantic interest, she’s caught between her need to avoid him so she can take secret photos and her burning desire to hook up with the handsome talent agent.

  1. Mopette. The bride’s fluffy white Maltese dog plays a major role in the story. Mopette is a loveable, cuddly pet with a mischievous streak that gets Rachel into big trouble. For a non-speaking role, Mopette pops up in many scenes. You might say she’s a co-star in this production.

  1. Coming of age story. Who hasn’t dreamed of a career in Hollywood? Rachel thinks she knows what she wants to be—a Hollywood camera operator on set with the stars she idolizes. Then Mickey helps Rachel realize she has a special talent that will take her in a different direction, and into his arms in Hollywood.

  1. Caught on Camera has a soundtrack. Actually, I created a playlist. Within each chapter, a music note together with a song title cues the reader to listen to that song in a YouTube playlist. I chose songs that reflect the heroine’s emotional journey throughout the love story—the highs, the lows, and the ultimate resolution. I selected Michael Bublé’s hit Hollywood for the theme song for the series because of its upbeat energy and message “You can find it in yourself”.

Author Bio:

Madelle completed four novels before Ellora’s Cave Publishing Inc. contracted to publish her debut romantic suspense, Diamond Lust—republished as Diamond Hunter—and a sexy, short free read, The Next Big Thing, in 2010.

When Madelle realized her author voice is more suited to light, humorous contemporary romance, she went waaaay back to her teen years for the Hollywood in Muskoka series setting. Madelle, her sisters, and assorted pets enjoyed idyllic summers at a lake in the District of Muskoka, Ontario, Canada, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of their top 20 Best of the World Must-see Places.

The Muskoka lakes’ forested shorelines are dotted with palatial properties owned by wealthy families and Hollywood celebrities. At sixteen, being neither rich nor famous, Madelle worked briefly as a chambermaid at the now-closed Delawana Inn, a local resort.

Madelle is retired from an engineering career in the federal public service and lives in Ottawa, Canada’s capital, with her husband. She tries to keep fit with cycling, Pilates, and yoga, and dreams of owning a waterfront cottage. Or at least a pool.

She tweets and posts on Facebook and Goodreads about Hollywood, filmmaking, Muskoka, and, of course, writing. She blogs the second Tuesday of the month at and occasionally on her own website.
