In case you missed it, there is a giveaway for this new release on my tour (excerpt) post here.

This Baby Business
by Heatherly Bell

Synopsis:

Strictly business…or is it?

Air force pilot Levi Lambert has seen plenty of danger—but his infant daughter might be the death of him. Fortunately, Levi’s found the answer to his sleep-deprived prayers: his next-door neighbor! Carly Gilmore is willing to be his nanny…until a small white lie turns their arrangement from business to very personal.

The fake engagement was intended to keep Levi from losing custody of his baby girl, but is causing all sorts of new problems. Not only does Carly attract trouble like bees to honey, but there’s the little matter of Levi’s smokin’-hot attraction to her. The last thing he needs is to fall in love…

Review:

Such a sweet story!

I haven’t read the first two stories in this series (Breaking Emily’s Rules and Airman to the Rescue)–yet!–but that didn’t keep me from enjoying the heck out of This Baby Business. I liked Levi and Carly quite a bit, and found it easy to root for them, both for what they individually wanted and needed and for them together as a couple–which was a bit tricky when it seemed that those wants and needs were going to keep them apart. They have some fantastic secondary character-BFFs and co-workers who help get them through things (please tell me Carly’s friends are getting stories? Please?) and (finally!) manage to figure out their own issues and make just the right kind of compromises in the end, giving us an ending that made me all warm and gooey inside.

(And good news–just when it seemed baby Grace and rescue dog Digger were little more than super cute plot moppets, they did something that made them seem more real and saved the day. Watch for Digger’s ideas of where he belongs in Levi’s house–because it’s just so gosh darn cute!)

Books 1 and 2 are now sitting in my TBR pile, and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for future books from this author!

Excerpt:

Levi lifted Petunia and placed her in the sudsy water. She seemed to like it, too, just like the lady said she would. She made a strange half-honk and half-squealing sound. Carly kept quiet and let Levi work. Quiet worked for her, too, especially when it involved watching Levi bend and, as his board shorts ran down low on his hips, reveal a patch of golden skin. He had a perfect ass. And it was official—Carly was boy crazy. Er, man crazy. She and Petunia, that is. The smart pig had rolled on her side, perhaps to make it easier for Levi to cop a feel. Carly would swear Petunia had batted her eyelashes at the man.

“You okay?” Levi squatted next to Petunia, rubbing her belly with a wet brush as he washed her. He cocked his head to Carly, waiting for her answer.

If she was talking about the other night, no, she was not. She’d been thinking about him way too much. “I didn’t know they’d be here. She just…showed up.”

“It’ll be okay.” He spoke smoothly and without an ounce of emotion.

That was Levi. Cool. Calm. No fear. She wondered if he’d give her lessons.

He rinsed Petunia off one last time with a large sponge, then lifted her out of the tub and straightened to his full height.

“She wants to know a good time to go out to dinner. What should I say?”

“Stall.”

“Good idea. I’ll tell her I’m too busy with work. You’re too busy with work. We’re both just way too busy.”

“So long as you don’t make it sound like we’re so busy we can’t take care of Grace.”

“Right.”

“I’m not worried.” He grinned. “You’ve got this.”

“Yes. Yes, I do. Okay. I should get Petunia back to her owner. Wait. Where’s Petunia?” Carly turned in a circle. No Petunia.

“Shit.” Levi stared in the direction of the airstrip, which of course was fenced off to the general public.

Petunia was headed for the fence where there was a strip of grass and dirt. Mostly dirt. Carly ran for the pig, but Levi, with his long legs, quickly outpaced her. Petunia squealed as if she’d finally tasted the sweet freedom of her ancestors. Dirt, straight ahead. Could paradise be far behind?

Carly heard a woman screech, “My pig! Petunia, come back to me. Come back!”

“I’ve got this!” Levi yelled.

“I’ve got this!” Carly waved to the woman.

Levi reached the pig first, of course, but Carly was right behind him. He put his hands on Petunia but she snorted and, being wet, slipped out of his grip.

Carly tried to block her between them and got a hand on her once, but Petunia got away. Now she was slippery, wet and muddy thanks to the dirt. When she tried to make a run for it again, Carly threw herself on top of her. But it seemed that the harder Carly clung, the more Petunia wriggled. She squealed and snorted in a most unladylike way. And dear God in heaven, was Carly actually wrestling with a pig? Wearing her favorite Forever 21 summer dress?

“Aren’t you going to help me? Put the leash on her! Levi. Hurry! I’ve got her.”

But he simply stood over her, hands on hips, grinning ear to ear. He’d been joined by the pig owner on one side, and Mr. and Mrs. Lane on the other. Mrs. Lane had a worried look on her face, but the amusement in Levi’s eyes was impossible to miss. The owner bent to leash Petunia.

Levi grinned and held out his hand. “Didn’t anyone ever teach you never to wrestle with a pig?”

New Release and Giveaway! NSFW by Piper Lawson

About the Book:

Being bad never felt so good…
The office is full of rules. Everything is off-limits. Making a charity calendar of the sexy guys on your floor? Not allowed. Shrinking your boss’ underwear when he sends it for dry-cleaning? Can’t do that either.
But those things keep the natural balance. See, Avery Banks, our resident rising star, is a shark. The tall, blond, and gorgeous kind with zero patience and even less forgiveness.
Good thing I’m the Mae West of executive assistants. I live to put grown men in their place.
He wasn’t supposed to find out…
Now he’s made it his personal vendetta to screw me the way I screwed him. I’m at his beck and call, 24/7, for every humiliating, meaningless request.
Until we stumble on a new game. One we both want to play. One we both need to win.
And once we start…I’m not sure Avery wants to replace me.
I’m not sure I want him to.
All I want is more of this. The fire under the ice. What happens behind closed doors.
It’s twisted, and so damn hot. But he’s my boss. And with the company coming off a scandal even I couldn’t engineer? What we’re doing is strictly NSFW.
Lucky for me, Avery and I have one thing in common…
We both suck at following the rules.

New Release Review! TELL ME by Abigail Strom

Tell Me

by Abigail Strom

Synopsis:

Shy bookstore owner Jane Finch grew up hiding in the margins of her own life while her vibrant, adventure-loving sister, Samantha, dominated every plotline. She’s made peace with it, unlike Sam’s business partner, Caleb, who’s always nudging Jane to go after what she really wants. Why should she care what blunt, brash Caleb thinks? They’ve never had much in common, except for Sam.

After tragedy strikes, they don’t even have that.

Caleb can’t quite remember when Sam’s little sister stopped being like a surrogate sibling to him and became just…Jane. She’s the most intriguing woman he’s ever met, and so much sexier and stronger than she thinks. On the emotional journey to honor Sam’s memory, the spark they’ve tried to deny becomes an inferno. This journey was meant to be an ending, but will they discover an unexpected new beginning?

Review:

I was a little worried that this book wouldn’t have enough time to deal with the pretty weighty issues that it promised to contain–the grief of losing a loved one, the guilt associated with often resenting that same loved one, and two people who really do seem to be pretty opposite finding a way to work things out together–because 1) it wasn’t that long and 2) the losing of the loved one doesn’t happen until about 1/3 of the way in. How could everything that needs to be done realistically get done in just a few hours of reading?

The answer is by skipping ahead in time, which the author does a few times. Don’t worry–though it is a bit disconcerting, ultimately actually ends up working fairly well. Unless my extreme fondness for Anne of Green Gables stepped in, blinding me to all other issues (confession here: I have an Anne hat hanging on my wall at home, with attached red braids and all…and yes, I’ve worn it–for crazy hat day at school, but still…)

This is entirely possible, I’ll be the first to admit.

Still, this was a very sweet book that had me tearing up more than once (sad tears a few times, OMG happy ones at the end) with lovable characters from a new-to-me author that I will absolutely be reading more from in the future.

Excerpt:

Tanner Cole grabbed the remote off the couch cushions and clicked through the two hundred or so channels on his satellite TV. Daytime TV sucked. Even worse: it sucked yesterday, the day before, and the day before that too. But it wasn’t like he had a lot of choices for entertainment right now. His knee was slowly healing, but mostly, he wanted to be left alone while he tried to figure out how he was going to deal with the rest of his life.

He was a professional football player. Well, he used to be. He’d torn both his ACL and MCL and broken his tibia after planting his cleats on some shitty turf in Washington, DC, during the last two minutes of a fucking blowout he shouldn’t have been playing in in the first place. His coach had practically begged him to sit on the bench that afternoon and spend a few minutes powering down some Gatorade while his backup took the risk of injury instead. In the coach’s defense, “practically begging” meant he glanced over at Tanner and said, “why don’t you have a seat, and we’ll finish this one for you?” But Tanner had insisted that cold afternoon in Washington. He’d played anyway. And his career was ended because of a freak hit by a rookie who thought he was making his mark by permanently sidelining one of the best left tackles in the league.

Winners didn’t sit on the bench. Winners went out there and dominated, in football and in life. He remembered every buzzword and cliché-laden locker-room speech he’d heard in his career, typically when he was lying away at three AM and wishing he had that thirty seconds or so before his injury back again. He’d wanted to make the decision when it was time to hang it up. That was taken away from him. He wasn’t happy about it.

People (specifically his ex-girlfriend) were not as willing to put up with his various personality flaws when he wasn’t headline news anymore. He could tick off those shortcomings on his fingers, and he’d done so more than once while alone in the predawn hours. According to his ex, Star, he was too overbearing, too competitive, too impatient, and too insensitive. She didn’t seem to care about his faults when he was ordering $150 bottles of champagne at the club or buying her a little somethin’ somethin’ at the jeweler’s or the latest designer shoes and bags. He’d wanted to believe their breakup was all her fault, but being alone for a few months brought some clarity. He was as much to blame for the end of their relationship. He’d have to man up at some point and make an apology.

Before he met with the surgeon who was putting his knee back together, Tanner had been told by the team’s doctor that he wasn’t going to play football again.

“With your age and these types of injuries, you’re not going to be able to pass any team’s physical, even after rehab. I know this isn’t how you wanted things to end,” the doctor said.

“No, it isn’t,” Tanner said.

“Look at it this way: it’s a great chance to get on with the rest of your life.”

Tanner knew the guy was just doing his job, but he was already sick of people telling him to look on the bright side. He’d be damned lucky if he walked with a limp. Right now, he’d be happy if he could get off the couch and walk to the mailbox without a walker.

New Release Review! APPROXIMATELY YOURS by Julie Hammerle (North Pole, Minnesota #3)

Approximately Yours

by Julie Hammerle

Synopsis:

Danny Garland is so out of Holly’s league. And her family is only back in North Pole, Minnesota, long enough to sell Grandma’s house and say “Merry Christmas.” So telling her basketball-star, too-hot-to-be-real long-time crush that she’d like to kiss him under the mistletoe just isn’t going to happen.

And now he’s asked out her cousin, Elda. Elda is a mess at flirting, so when she begs Holly to intervene, she does. Holly helps her flirt with him over text. And then again. And again. Now she’s stuck texting him as her cousin, and Elda is the one going on the date. Holly thought she could settle for just conversation with Danny, but talking with him is some kind of magic. He’s got the perfect comebacks, she makes him laugh, they text until everyone is asleep.

She just can’t ever tell him it’s her he’s really texting.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book has hot texts, gingerbread wars, and a slow-burn romance that could melt a Minnesota winter.

Review:

Adorable!

Holly and Danny are such likable characters that even when they’re being totally blind and frustratingly dense, it’s hard to get too mad at them, because if you’ve ever been an awkward teen you totally get where their insecurities come from, at least a little. Through it all you can see just how absolutely right they’ll be together, which will keep you turning the pages like no one’s business (except for the brief breaks you may need to take in order to Google one–or fifty–of the gifs they end up texting to one another. Thanks, Julie Hammerle, for making this book take me twice as long to read… ;))

All in all this was a fun read that kind of makes me want to take up competitive gingerbread housing. (Who knew this was a thing?) Though Holly’s cousin Elda’s ending here gave me a bit of a pause (maybe I’d feel better if she had her own book? I’m not questioning her choice, just how quickly things happened there) overall this was a cute read and a fun way to spend a few weekend hours while I wait for sweater weather to (finally) arrive.

P.S.–read the author’s “Airing of Grievances” at the end. Even if you’ve never seen a single episode of Seinfeld (do such people really exist?) they’re good for a laugh.

Excerpt:

While he’d sure as hell rather be surrounded by his tech equipment at the command center, Trygg couldn’t find much to object to as he followed Sia up an exterior staircase to a private third-floor entrance of the house. As irritated as he was after her power play in the car just now—not to mention her earlier act of defiance that had rattled him more than he cared to admit, even to himself—it was hard to think about much else except the rhythmic sway of her hips as she mounted the old iron steps.

Very hard.

Her long, elegant spine and firm backside were a temptation that stoked a growing heat inside him as he stalked up the climb behind her. Everything male in him burned with desire. Everything Breed in him hungered for her too. If she chanced a look over her shoulder, it would be damn close to impossible to hide the amber lighting his irises or the press of his sharp fangs as they filled his mouth.

Letting her win just now was a mistake he already regretted, but that’s where her control was going to end. He’d go inside as she insisted and they’d do a cursory look through the rest of the items they’d brought with them. He would point out something or other so she’d have a bone to chew on, then he’d take everything back to the command center and dig into the meat of the scant evidence alone.

The way he preferred to operate.

He scowled at her when they reached the top of the stairs. “Is this the way you sneak in all the men you bring home with you?”

“Only the surly ones.” Her blonde brow arched over her long-lashed eyes. “And to answer the question you really want to ask, I’ve never brought anyone up here before.”

He didn’t want to ask that, so why did her answer give him such a healthy stab of satisfaction?

Review:

I love that the 1001 Dark Nights series novellas offer relatively risk-free ways to both enjoy favorite authors and series and find new ones. How is it I’ve never read any of Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed books before? I honestly have no idea, but now that I have, I must read more of them!

I loved both Sia and Trygg (just don’t ask me to say his name out loud, please!) and being immersed in their world was a fun, heady ride. We weren’t bogged down with the nitty-gritty details of how everything worked there, but learned just enough to understand the challenges they were dealing with and the things that made them what they are. Once the external threats were dealt with, their relationship problems were resolved a bit quickly, but since it was really up to one of them to just not be a jerk about what had happened and give in gracefully, it made sense that that was what they decided to do. Obviously, they belonged together, so why fight it? 😉

I’ll definitely be coming back for more from this world–soon!
