A Conversation with Amity Hope, Author of THE RULES OF PERSUASION (with a giveaway!)

Welcome, Amity! What 5 things should readers know about you?

  1. Growing up, I hated my name. Amity Hope (Hope is actually my middle name) was too unique at a time when all of my friends had “normal” names. Sometime after high school I decided my name wasn’t so bad.
  2. I have two teenage sons who I love spending time with.
  3. I am a completely mediocre cook (and that might be too generous of a description) but I absolutely love to bake.
  4. I adore classic cars—though I really don’t know much about them—and love visiting car shows.
  5. My ideal day would be spent sitting on my deck, lost in a fantasy novel.

Oooh, I’m with you on #3—I’d rather bake over cooking any day!

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

It all started with a water tower…There’s a water tower in my town that I’ve always thought would be sort of easy to climb. How fun would that be?! Never mind that I’m a complete rule follower and afraid of heights. The idea eventually led to living vicariously through my characters, after giving them reason to climb, of course. Obviously there’s a lot more to the book than that, but it all stemmed from the tower.

I like that! I’ve been known to check out water towers for climbability—and I’d never do it myself either. But knowing that it’s possible? Opens up possibilities…

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I have been writing for as long as I can remember. When I was quite young, I created picture books, which is laughable as I have no artistic ability whatsoever when it comes to drawing. When I was in middle school I was already reading Stephen King (without my mom knowing) and Danielle Steel. My tastes have always been fairly eclectic. I’ve wanted to be an author for as long as I can remember, it was just a matter of finding my niche.

Didn’t everybody read Stephen King in middle school? 😉

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I love reading young adult fantasy and have wanted to try writing it for quite some time. I have several projects in the works, but a young adult, dark fantasy is currently filling up my days.

Sounds great—can’t wait!

What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?

I rarely reread a book, but right now I’m rereading Graceling because it’s been a very, very long time since I first read it. I loved it the first time around, and still adore it.

That’s on my TBR—maybe I should bump it up…

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Welcome to late-night graffiti sessions, flirty baseball lessons, and a never-ending list of relationship rules

just made to be broken.

Perfect! Thanks so much 🙂

Thanks so much for having me on your blog!

Thank you, Amity!

1)    Take things slow (her rule)
2)    Make it believable (his rule)

After tragedy hit her family, Meg Matthews officially crossed the line from “good girl” to “bad girl.” Motorcycle? Check. Graffiti? Check. The only thing Meg hadn’t planned on was blackmail. Too bad now a certain infuriating boy holds Meg’s future in his hands…

When Luke Prescott—star pitcher and town golden boy—catches Meg vandalizing the school, she’s given two choices: face the consequences or enter into a fake relationship with him to get his parents and his ex off his back.

But as Meg and Luke grow closer, they both realize they’ve been keeping secrets from each other. Their fake relationship might be doomed from the start—if they can’t learn to open up to the one person they never thought they’d trust.
