A Conversation with Katie Ruggle, Author of GONE TOO DEEP (Search & Rescue #3)

GONE TOO DEEP comes out Tuesday (8/2) but you can read my review now!
conversation

Welcome, Katie! What 5 things should readers know about you?

  1. I have three chickens, to which I am abnormally attached.
  2. I am a self-admitted forensics nerd.
  3. The phrase, “C’mon! It’ll be fun!” is my Kryptonite, and it has led me into all sorts of dangerous/uncomfortable/fascinating/occasionally actually fun situations.
  4. Of all the Search and Rescue characters, George from Gone Too Deep is totally my favorite.
  5. I’m a complete pantser and have no clue where my books will end up when I start them.

I’m with you on #3—the fact that he’s the only one whose story I’ve read so far is a minor detail 😉 He’s going to be a hard act to follow!

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

The setting was inspired by my real-life off-grid home in the Colorado Rockies. It was easy to write about the cold and wind and snow (and did I mention the cold?) when there was a blizzard howling outside. Character-wise, I wanted to feature first responders. After working with cops and volunteering with firefighters, I am completely in awe of their courage. They’re also a funny bunch.

Wait, it’s cold? I didn’t get that from the book at all 😉

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I’ve been writing since I learned to read at age four. Once I discovered how wonderful books could be, I dreamed of becoming an author. It occurred to me a number of years ago that, in order to be published, I needed to actually finish something. I’m not sure why it took me so long to figure that out.

LOL, that is true—speaking from personal experience, DENIAL can keep you from figuring it out (or at least from admitting you’ve figured it out!)

What are you working on right now?

I recently finished the first book in my Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit series (out in 2017), and I just completed the final (final!) edits on the fourth book in the Search and Rescue series, In Safe Hands.

Awesome!

What can readers look for from you in the next year?

All the loose ends and mysteries and plot twists will be wrapped up in October, when the last Search and Rescue book, In Safe Hands, comes out. In 2017, the Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit series will be released. There will be women on the run, heroic dogs, hot cops and lots of explosions—what more could anyone ask for?

Hmmm, yeah. That’s about it. I can’t think of a single thing… 😉

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Bubbly Ellie’s a city girl. Quiet George loves the mountains. Can these complete opposites survive the wilds—and a killer bent on revenge?

Perfect! Thanks so much, Katie!

About the Author:IMG_8781-1

A fan of the old adage “write what you know”, Katie Ruggle lived in an off-grid, solar- and wind-powered house in the Rocky Mountains until her family lured her back to Minnesota. When she’s not writing, Katie rides horses, shoots guns (not while riding, although that would be awesome), cross-country skis (badly) and travels to warm places where she can scuba dive. A graduate of the Police Academy, Katie received her ice-rescue certification and can attest that the reservoirs in the Colorado mountains really are that cold. A fan of anything that makes her feel like a bad-ass, she has trained in Krav Maga, boxing and gymnastics.

Gone too Deep (Search & Rescue #3)
by Katie Ruggle

In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder…

George Holloway has spent his life alone, exploring the treacherous beauty of the Colorado Rockies. He’s the best survival expert Search and Rescue has, which makes him the obvious choice to lead Ellie Price through deadly terrain to find her missing father. There’s just one problem-Ellie’s everything George isn’t. She’s a city girl, charming, gregarious, delicate, small. And when she looks up at him with those big, dark eyes, he swears he would tear the world apart to keep her safe.

With a killer on the loose, he may have no choice.

Ellie’s determined to find her father no matter the cost. But as she and her gorgeous mountain of a guide fight their way through an unforgiving wilderness, they find themselves in the crosshairs of a dangerous man in search of revenge. And they are now his prey…
