Where did the idea for Heir to the Pack come from?

I am lucky to have some wonderful author friends and critique partners. Several of them write contemporary romance, and we sometimes get into discussions about romance tropes. If you’re not familiar with the idea of a trope, Wikipedia defines it as:

A literary trope is the use of figurative language – via word, phrase, or even an image – for artistic effect such as using a figure of speech. The word trope has also come to be used for describing commonly recurring literary and rhetorical devices, motifs or clichés in creative works. (emphasis mine)

The second definition is the one that is usually used in romance.

Common romance tropes include things like amnesia, friends to lovers, a fake engagement, and so on. Readers (and authors!) often have favorite tropes, and sometimes ones that annoy them so much they’ll chuck a book against the wall. We see tropes most commonly in contemporary romance, but sometimes in other subgenres.

So, how did the idea for Heir To The Pack come about?

I was chatting to a friend and I made a silly joke that instead of writing an urban fantasy book, I should write a suburban fantasy! Instead of a secret baby, why not a werewolf’s secret puppy?

A werewolf’s secret baby book. The light went on in my brain, and Heir To The Pack was born. By the time I drove home, I had the opening scene and the bare bones of the plot inside my head. Some of the details came from my knowledge of animals as a hobby farmer (for pack dynamics and so on), and the experience of having a small child who at one time had a health problem.

This book was so much fun to write, and I plan to use my other favorite romance tropes throughout the series.

My friend, author Mindy Klasky, has put together a list of common romance tropes which covers them all very well. Which are your favorites?
