Title: In Too Deep
Author: Kimberly Kincaid
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: October 17, 2017
Publisher: Kimberly Kincaid Romance
Series: Station Seventeen
Format: Print & Digital

Synopsis:

As Station Seventeen’s rookie, Luke Slater knows his fire and EMS training will be both rigorous and risky, but he never imagined having to partner up with the one woman he wants to keep at arm’s length most of all. Quinn Copeland is as wide-open as Luke is reserved. He has no interest in letting the sweet and sexy paramedic rock his hard-earned control. But the need for composure becomes the need to survive when they find themselves in the crosshairs of a brutal gang leader on their first shift together.

Paramedic Quinn Copeland’s station mates aren’t just her friends. They’re her family. She’d do anything to keep them safe—including reluctantly trusting her impossible-to-read, impossibly gorgeous new partner with the one thing she holds close. As the passion between Luke and Quinn goes from a slow burn to a sizzle, their steps grow more and more dangerous, both in the fire house and out. Can they outwit a cold-blooded killer and face the fears that could cost them everything? Or are they in too deep?

Review:

A perfect blend of romance and suspense!

I wasn’t actually expecting the amount of suspense that was here–several scenes literally had me on the edge of my seat throughout; obviously I was too distracted by that fantastic cover (and Luke) to have read all the way down on the synopsis. Or maybe I did read all the way down, but just forgot–again, I’m blaming that cover. The muscles! The blue eyes!

Either way, I’m not complaining.

I loved Luke and Quinn, both of whom live to take care of people while shying away from being taken care of themselves. Quinn is without family of her own so she’s made her own among the friends she’s found at work; Luke has two remaining family members and they’re the only two people he lets himself be close to. In seven months at Station Seventeen, he’s built up an armor around himself; he’s put in extra shifts and extra work in order to get his paramedic license on top of being a firefighter but has kept himself carefully separate from his coworkers. But of course he’s noticed them, especially Quinn…

Ms Kincaid did a great job balancing the romance and the suspense here. Just when I was fully pulled in to the romantic aspects of Quinn and Luke’s relationship, she’d do something to bring the danger they were in back to the forefront and have the hairs on the back of my neck standing straight up. The drama at the climax–ack!–was intense. Fortunately the ending made it all more than worth it…

In Too Deep is the third book in the series, but would work fine as a standalone. Prior to this I’d only read one of the series novellas– Deep Check , the one with the hockey player in it, of course!–and wasn’t at all lost. The men and women of Station Seventeen (and Precinct Thirty-Three) make up a fantastic family, and I can’t wait to read more from the series soon!

New Release Review! THIS BABY BUSINESS by Heatherly Bell (Heroes of Fortune Valley #3)

In case you missed it, there is a giveaway for this new release on my tour (excerpt) post here.

This Baby Business
by Heatherly Bell

Synopsis:

Strictly business…or is it?

Air force pilot Levi Lambert has seen plenty of danger—but his infant daughter might be the death of him. Fortunately, Levi’s found the answer to his sleep-deprived prayers: his next-door neighbor! Carly Gilmore is willing to be his nanny…until a small white lie turns their arrangement from business to very personal.

The fake engagement was intended to keep Levi from losing custody of his baby girl, but is causing all sorts of new problems. Not only does Carly attract trouble like bees to honey, but there’s the little matter of Levi’s smokin’-hot attraction to her. The last thing he needs is to fall in love…

Review:

Such a sweet story!

I haven’t read the first two stories in this series (Breaking Emily’s Rules and Airman to the Rescue)–yet!–but that didn’t keep me from enjoying the heck out of This Baby Business. I liked Levi and Carly quite a bit, and found it easy to root for them, both for what they individually wanted and needed and for them together as a couple–which was a bit tricky when it seemed that those wants and needs were going to keep them apart. They have some fantastic secondary character-BFFs and co-workers who help get them through things (please tell me Carly’s friends are getting stories? Please?) and (finally!) manage to figure out their own issues and make just the right kind of compromises in the end, giving us an ending that made me all warm and gooey inside.

(And good news–just when it seemed baby Grace and rescue dog Digger were little more than super cute plot moppets, they did something that made them seem more real and saved the day. Watch for Digger’s ideas of where he belongs in Levi’s house–because it’s just so gosh darn cute!)

Books 1 and 2 are now sitting in my TBR pile, and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for future books from this author!

New Release Review! APPROXIMATELY YOURS by Julie Hammerle (North Pole, Minnesota #3)

Approximately Yours

by Julie Hammerle

Synopsis:

Danny Garland is so out of Holly’s league. And her family is only back in North Pole, Minnesota, long enough to sell Grandma’s house and say “Merry Christmas.” So telling her basketball-star, too-hot-to-be-real long-time crush that she’d like to kiss him under the mistletoe just isn’t going to happen.

And now he’s asked out her cousin, Elda. Elda is a mess at flirting, so when she begs Holly to intervene, she does. Holly helps her flirt with him over text. And then again. And again. Now she’s stuck texting him as her cousin, and Elda is the one going on the date. Holly thought she could settle for just conversation with Danny, but talking with him is some kind of magic. He’s got the perfect comebacks, she makes him laugh, they text until everyone is asleep.

She just can’t ever tell him it’s her he’s really texting.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book has hot texts, gingerbread wars, and a slow-burn romance that could melt a Minnesota winter.

Review:

Adorable!

Holly and Danny are such likable characters that even when they’re being totally blind and frustratingly dense, it’s hard to get too mad at them, because if you’ve ever been an awkward teen you totally get where their insecurities come from, at least a little. Through it all you can see just how absolutely right they’ll be together, which will keep you turning the pages like no one’s business (except for the brief breaks you may need to take in order to Google one–or fifty–of the gifs they end up texting to one another. Thanks, Julie Hammerle, for making this book take me twice as long to read… ;))

All in all this was a fun read that kind of makes me want to take up competitive gingerbread housing. (Who knew this was a thing?) Though Holly’s cousin Elda’s ending here gave me a bit of a pause (maybe I’d feel better if she had her own book? I’m not questioning her choice, just how quickly things happened there) overall this was a cute read and a fun way to spend a few weekend hours while I wait for sweater weather to (finally) arrive.

P.S.–read the author’s “Airing of Grievances” at the end. Even if you’ve never seen a single episode of Seinfeld (do such people really exist?) they’re good for a laugh.

Excerpt:

While he’d sure as hell rather be surrounded by his tech equipment at the command center, Trygg couldn’t find much to object to as he followed Sia up an exterior staircase to a private third-floor entrance of the house. As irritated as he was after her power play in the car just now—not to mention her earlier act of defiance that had rattled him more than he cared to admit, even to himself—it was hard to think about much else except the rhythmic sway of her hips as she mounted the old iron steps.

Very hard.

Her long, elegant spine and firm backside were a temptation that stoked a growing heat inside him as he stalked up the climb behind her. Everything male in him burned with desire. Everything Breed in him hungered for her too. If she chanced a look over her shoulder, it would be damn close to impossible to hide the amber lighting his irises or the press of his sharp fangs as they filled his mouth.

Letting her win just now was a mistake he already regretted, but that’s where her control was going to end. He’d go inside as she insisted and they’d do a cursory look through the rest of the items they’d brought with them. He would point out something or other so she’d have a bone to chew on, then he’d take everything back to the command center and dig into the meat of the scant evidence alone.

The way he preferred to operate.

He scowled at her when they reached the top of the stairs. “Is this the way you sneak in all the men you bring home with you?”

“Only the surly ones.” Her blonde brow arched over her long-lashed eyes. “And to answer the question you really want to ask, I’ve never brought anyone up here before.”

He didn’t want to ask that, so why did her answer give him such a healthy stab of satisfaction?

Review:

I love that the 1001 Dark Nights series novellas offer relatively risk-free ways to both enjoy favorite authors and series and find new ones. How is it I’ve never read any of Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed books before? I honestly have no idea, but now that I have, I must read more of them!

I loved both Sia and Trygg (just don’t ask me to say his name out loud, please!) and being immersed in their world was a fun, heady ride. We weren’t bogged down with the nitty-gritty details of how everything worked there, but learned just enough to understand the challenges they were dealing with and the things that made them what they are. Once the external threats were dealt with, their relationship problems were resolved a bit quickly, but since it was really up to one of them to just not be a jerk about what had happened and give in gracefully, it made sense that that was what they decided to do. Obviously, they belonged together, so why fight it? 😉

I’ll definitely be coming back for more from this world–soon!

New Release Review! STORM GATHERING by Rebecca Zanetti (Scorpius Syndrome #4)

Storm Gathering
by Rebecca Zanetti

Synopsis:

Even before surviving the Scorpius bacterium, Greyson Storm was a lone wolf navigating minefields. As a kid, he learned to take a hit and find safety. As an adult, he joined the military and quickly learned how to protect and defend. When the world ended, he created a mercenary camp with military precision, no entanglements, and a promise to avenge a fallen friend. As part of that vow, he kidnapped Maureen Shadow, but now that he has let her go, her blue eyes and intriguing mind keep haunting him…

As possibly the only Biotechnology Engineer still living, Maureen Shadow might be humanity’s one hope to survive the aftermath of Scorpius, making her frighteningly valuable to both allies and enemies. Even after sexual tension explodes with Greyson, she’s not sure which camp he belongs to—friend or foe? Worse yet, survival may mean thwarting his prime mission, putting her in even more peril. When danger and seduction collide, there is no safety in this new world.

Review:

OMG, I love Maureen Shadow–it’s like we’re sisters from another mister. Proof positive:

The only way civilization will survive is if the women just take over. Duh.

You go, girl! And then

At this point, she never wanted to leave the Bunker. Forget Vanuard and Merc territory. There was hot water and mealoaf here.

Spoiler alert: there’s Twinkies too. That Superbowl commercial was totally right! (I knew it!)

But seriously, I really am enjoying the world that Ms. Zanetti has created here. Though perhaps enjoying isn’t exactly the right word–overall, it’s pretty darn terrifying–but the people she’s put there? They’re something else. Strong, smart women and the alpha guys who love them–even when they disable their garage doors to keep them from doing something stupid. (I direct you back to the first quote above. It’s a recurring theme.)

Gathering Storm is the 4th book in the series, and yeah, reading them in order is probably your best bet to completely follow the plot threads that continue from book to book. You do get a bit of background here to remind you/bring you up to date with what’s going on in this world and why, but it will all have more of an impact if you’ve kept up with things all along. Plus, then you’ll better understand why I’m so anxious for Damon’s book–and no, it’s not just because he’s the one with the Twinkies… 😉

New Release Review! SHINING THROUGH by Elizabeth Harmon (Red Hot Russians #4)

Synopsis:

The Biggest Season of her Career…

America’s sweetheart Tabitha Turner is on track to win figure-skating gold in the Winter Games. Her family has sacrificed everything for her career, but the pressure is taking its toll. Burned out and living a lie, can Tabitha let off a little steam without melting the ice?

The Last Chance of His…

Russia’s bad boy of skating Daniil Andreev is determined to prove the toughest thing about him is his competitive fight. When Tabitha tempts him to help her take a secret walk on the wild side, he gives her a taste of the freedom she craves, never expecting that one unforgettable night could turn into something more.

Two Hearts on Thin Ice…

Chicago, Vancouver, Paris… the international figure skating season unfolds. Tabitha and Daniil compete and fall in love, but as the pressure mounts in a make-or-break season, can they set aside their painful pasts and spiral into a shining future together… or will their dreams shatter like thin ice?

Review:

As someone who can’t stop on ice skates without using the boards (that’s why they’re there, surely?) I’ve always loved watching other people skating, whether it’s competitive figure skating or hockey. (Those are the only two sports that compete at the winter Olympics, right?) So reading about figure skaters and hockey players? Totally right up my alley. So when I heard that there was a new Red Hot Russians book, my response was, “Yes, please!”

Shining Through was a solid addition to the series. Tabitha and Daniil are the couple who shouldn’t work at all but somehow totally do. She’s “America’s Sweetheart” who’s trying to finally bring home Olympic gold in her last competitive season, the girl whose family has made sacrifices for her to be able to skate her whole life. He’s the son of a Russian oligarch who’s rebelled against…well, pretty much everything…by being the bad boy of ice skating, so much so that his own country’s program won’t sponsor his career. They shouldn’t work together, yet somehow they do. Until they almost don’t…

I liked both Tabitha and Daniil–it was easy to root for them, both in their skating and in their relationship. Things were a tad bit rushed toward the end of the book, but as I was anxious for them to get to their HEA, I didn’t mind too much. (Still–no actual page time for their Olympic routines was a bit of a bummer…)

Shining Through is the fifth book in the series, but could absolutely be read as a standalone–some of the other series characters make appearances, but it’s not necessary to have read their stories (yet!) to enjoy this one.

New Release Review and Giveaway! BREAKAWAY by Sophia Henry (Pilots Hockey #5)

Breakaway
Sophia Henry
Published by: Random House: Flirt
Publication date: September 5th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Sports

In a standalone hockey romance that tugs at readers’ heartstrings, a broken ex-pro learns to live and love again—all thanks to the complicated, wonderful nurse who gives him a second chance.

Brianna Collins needs to break away from her overbearing family. Her parents expect her to “fix” her brother after a series of concussions derailed his hockey career. Unfortunately, no doctor will give him clearance to play, and she’s finished with being the person they rely on to perform a miracle that will never happen. For Bree, a six-month nursing assignment at a hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, is the perfect escape.

Luke Daniels, former forward for the NHL’s Charlotte Aviators, has spent close to a year rehabbing a career-threatening injury—and distracting himself however he can. Worlds collide when Luke realizes that the girl from his latest one-night-stand happens to be the new nurse at the hospital where he volunteers in the pediatric unit. What’s more, Bree’s the only person who makes him excited about life again.

Despite her initial reservations, Luke can’t help pursuing sweet, beautiful Bree. Then he realizes it was her brother whose career he ended with an accidental hit, and he falls back on the thing that’s always helped suppress his demons: alcohol. But if Luke doesn’t kick his old habits, he just may lose the one thing he loves more than hockey.

Praise for Sophia Henry:
“Sophia Henry’s hockey novels are fun and flirty, warm and sweet, with relatable heroines and swoon-worthy hockey heroes. They’ll bring a smile to your face and warmth to your heart.”USA Today bestselling author Kelly Jamieson

Review:

Breakaway wasn’t exactly what I was expecting (I don’t think I read the blurb too closely–or maybe at all? I just saw “Pilots Hockey, #5” and got grabby hands)–there wasn’t too much hockey here, though both MCs have had some connection to it their whole lives–but I still ended up liking it a whole lot. Neither Bree nor Luke are looking for a relationship, and in fact they spend a good half the book as f*uck buddies and are more than okay with that, but of course that eventually morphs into something else–this time for him before it does for her, which was a refreshing change.

I really liked Bree and Luke together and was rooting for them from the first page (not to mention from the cover, though I don’t know who that guy is, because you sure as heck couldn’t put that hair into a ponytail…) though it did feel a bit at the end like things were resolved a bit too easily, especially with the family issues they both had. Still, the actual ending was very sweet. Previous series characters make brief appearances in the book–mostly in the beginning–which was fun for those who have read their books but shouldn’t cause a problem at all for those who haven’t.

Now all we have to do is wait for book #6… 🙂

Excerpt:

From Laura Kaye:

I’m thrilled to be celebrating the release of my super hot and emotional Theirs to Take, the next erotic standalone romance in my Blasphemy series, about the twelve Masters who run and play at Baltimore’s most exclusive club. Theirs to Take is a sexy menage about what happens when two prior navy best friends and business partners meet a woman who makes them admit to desires they’ve never before voice. I think you’re going to love Jonathan and Cruz! I know I adored writing them! Even more fun, there are characters and scenes in Theirs to Take that cross over with the amazing Jennifer Probst’s brand new Reveal Me – and the best part is that both are standalones so you can dive right in!

Now, read in for a taste of Theirs to Take…

Standing over the two people who had become his whole life over the past four weeks, Jonathan stroked his cock, more aroused than he’d ever been before. Because this time was laden with emotion. Emotion that they’d all acknowledged, at least to some extent.

“You two look so hot I could get myself off to just the sight of you laying like that. Shoot my load all over you while you fuck each other in front of me.” He shook his head. “Mmm. Another time.” He got to his knees, and then he paused. “Where are you, Hartley? What color?”

She forced her gaze to his and gave him a smile. “Green, Sir.”

Damn, she was doing so good, proving once again how right she was for them. “Making me so proud of you. You’re doing great, you hear me?”

“Thank you, Sir,” she whispered, her expression going soft at the praise.

Her sweetness made Jonathan need her even more. “It’s time for the three of us to come together, all at once. Just like this.”

“Fuck, Jay, you need to get in her,” Cruz said, his hands moving over her breasts, her stomach, and reaching down to where Jonathan was lining his cock up at her pussy.

“Yes,” Jonathan said, entering her and finding her tighter than ever before. But she was so wet that her slickness eased the way.

“Oh, my God!” she cried. “Ohmigod, ohmigod.”

Jonathan released a harsh breath. “Where are you, darlin’?”

“Green. I’m green. It’s so good but it’s so much,” she babbled.

“Take us, baby. Take both of us,” Cruz rasped. “Do you feel that? Jonathan rubbing against me through you?”

Hartley’s writhed. “Yes, I feel it. I feel everything.” She reached a hand down to her clit.

Jonathan pushed her touch away. “Your orgasms are ours to give tonight.” He grinned at her whimper, and then he was the one spilling a harsh groan of need, because he bottomed out inside her. She’d taken them all—of course, she’d really done that days ago when she’d taken their hearts. A realization that put words on the tip of his tongue. Words he hadn’t yet said. But just then, Jonathan could only manage to say one thing. “Hartley,” he rasped.

“Move, please. I need to feel you move in me,” she pleaded.

“God, she begs so pretty, Jonathan. Give her what she needs,” Cruz said.

Review:

OMG, this book–it’s capable of steaming up your reading glasses…that’s not even a tiny bit of an exaggeration. Seriously.

Theirs to Take is the latest offering in Kaye’s erotic romance series, Blasphemy, featuring 12 Masters who all co-own a BDSM club named, of course, Blasphemy. This book has two of them, Cruz and Johnathan, best friends and coworkers and…something more? Maybe? Probably?

I really liked the three main characters–Cruz, Jay, and Hartley–and felt they all worked well together. Things moved a bit on the fast side here, though, at least where Hartley is concerned (the other two have known each other for ages, so they get a pass on the falling in love in a novella issue) and I would have liked to have seen more relationship development along with all of the whoa-did-that-just-happen? scenes…in other words, this would have been great as a full-length read. Still, this one fits right in with the series sexy, steamy, and romantic all at once–it’s nice to see two more Masters find their HEAs, and many of the other series characters make appearances here as well, which was fun.

Theirs to Take would probably work okay as a standalone, but honestly if you read and like an excerpt of it, you’ll more than likely enjoy the whole series…so do yourself a favor and grab this one but start at book one ( Hard to Serve ) to get the full experience.

*****
No. Just no. As a woman and a professional matchmaker, I can’t let Dylan Parker run this ad. He’s the catch of all catches. That’s why his sister has asked me to help her ridiculously good-looking, insanely rich, but socially clueless brother find a woman. As a broker of happily ever afters, I’m known as the Stud Finder since I make a great living pairing wildly successful women with men who won’t fleece them but will adore them. After all, what woman in her right mind wouldn’t fall in love with Dylan?

I mean, besides me. It totally won’t be me.

Excerpt:

The problem solver in me comes out in full force. I must show him the beauty of a made bed. “Come with me.” I grab the basket of mostly-eaten chips, dump the rest, return the salsa tubs to the counter for cleaning, and reach into my wallet to leave a generous tip in the jar.

He clasps his hand over mine, shaking his head. “My treat,” he says, his voice a soft, sexy whisper. I want to protest, to tell him I insist, but he curls his hand tighter, and I’m speechless.

His hand on mine sparks a wave of goosebumps on my arms, my body telling me I like his hands on me. I want more of his touch. I imagine how I’d feel if he ran his hand up my arm, to my shoulder, through my hair. A shudder races through me, and I do my best to tamp down my reaction to a suddenly overactive imagination.

“Thank you,” I say, my voice like a feather.

“You’re welcome.” His eyes never stray from mine, and for a sliver of time he holds my gaze by the counter at Mama une’s.

Then I wrestle my attention back to my plan. We leave, and fifteen minutes later, I stroll through the front doors of the Luxe Hotel. My friend Nate Harper is the CEO, and I’ve texted him for a quick favor. The concierge greets me and hands me a room key card. Dylan and I walk past the chichi sushi restaurant in the lobby, head to the elevator, and soon arrive at room 521. I slide the card in the door.

Dylan sets a hand on my arm. “Are you trying to seduce me?”

“No,” I say quickly. Too quickly. I’m not trying to seduce him at all.

I open the door, and a perfectly modulated blast of cool air greets us. We stroll across the navy carpet to a king-size bed perfectly appointed with a gorgeous white duvet and mountains of blue velvet pillows. I gesture to it, as if I’m a saleswoman, showing it off. “Tell me. Doesn’t this bed make you want to do everything on it?”

Then, to demonstrate my point, I fall back onto it, like a snow angel.

I prop myself on my elbows and meet his eyes. His green irises darken, and his lips part. He stares at me, and something shifts. The look in his eyes is no longer challenging. He’s not asking me to prove a point. His eyes are hungry. He stares as if he’s considering my question seriously, and I realize that maybe it does sound as if I’m trying to seduce him. I’ve pushed the limits here. I’m in a hotel room, trying to prove a point to a client, and in reality, my skirt is riding up my thighs, and I’m sprawled on a pristine, inviting bed.

Review:

Stud Finder is a cute, flirty, and fun novella–a perfect little reading snack for when you’re too busy for something longer but have to get a quick book in. Its characters have connections to characters from other books (there’s a helpful chart at the end) but it absolutely can be read as a standalone–though you’d better believe those other stories are coming off my TBR sooner rather than later! (Especially Mia and Patrick’s story–how soon will that be out???)

Dylan’s the perfect blend of sweet, slightly socially-awkward, but sexy geek, and Evie’s his made-for-him match, even though at first they don’t think they have much in common. It’s a lot of fun watching them figure it out along the way. There isn’t a lot of heavy drama and conflict–it is a novella–mostly miscommunication, which goes on just as long as it should to make the story both believable and satisfying.

Favorite bit of internal dialogue:

She looks like a naughty princess.

Wait.

She only looks naughty because I’m thinking of her naked.

So that’s on me.

LOL!

“Witty dialogue, fun dates, and a deliciously nerdy hero all match perfectly with a heroine who doesn’t really know she needs all that until it’s right there in front of her. Lauren Blakely has another winner with this one!”

Synopsis:

They built a life on lies ..

Sutton and Ethan Montclair’s idyllic life is not as it appears. The couple seems made for each other, but the truth is ugly. Consumed by professional and personal betrayals and financial woes, the two both love and hate each other. As tensions mount, Sutton disappears, leaving behind a note saying not to look for her.

Ethan finds himself the target of vicious gossip as friends, family and the media speculate on what really happened to Sutton Montclair. As the police investigate, the lies the couple have been spinning for years quickly unravel. Is Ethan a killer? Is he being set up? Did Sutton hate him enough to kill the child she never wanted and then herself? The path to the answers is full of twists that will leave the reader breathless.

Review:

Oh, goodness. This book has so many twists and turns and pivots I’m not even sure how much I can say about it. Yes, I liked it. No, I couldn’t put it down, especially once I got past the 50% mark and things really picked up. No, I wasn’t a huge fan of most of the characters (except poor little Dashiell, and probably Holly…) but I also didn’t want the antagonist’s plans to succeed, because OMG no one deserved the crazy-a$$ plan that individual had in store for them. Yes, I figured out whodunit pretty early on (okay, okay, so I was guessing–but it turned out to be right!), but no, I didn’t have a clue what the motivation was or how it was all being put together.

Did I mention twists and turns and pivots? So. Many.

There were a few bits toward the end that gave me pause, and at least one question from earlier that isn’t quite answered to my satisfaction–hence the four stars instead of five–but overall this was one heck of a read. My first book from Ms. Ellison, but definitely not my last!
