5 Things You Don’t Know About Meredith Molloney of Aileen Erin’s SHATTERED PACK (Alpha Girls #6–with a giveaway!)

5 Things You Don’t Know About Meredith

  1. Meredith is a member of the American Wayfarer Pack.

The world is divided up among packs, but Meredith’s is different, mostly made up of Cazadores. When big bads start acting up—vampires, feys gone murderous, leprechauns running amuck—they fly in to save the day. That’s why Meredith is a super awesome fighter. She was trained by her herd of brothers—not to mention the rest of her pack—since she could walk.

  1. Meredith’s pack was against her going to St. Ailbe’s Academy.

Annoying as it is, women in the packs don’t have a ton of independence. Especially in the Wayfarer pack. (Don’t worry. Tessa and Meredith are going to change all that. 😉 ) There are only a few women in the Wayfarer Pack. Meredith, her mother, and her nanny Ciara. Which is why Meredith wanted to get out so badly. But the Cazadores wanted to protect her. How could they do that if she wasn’t with them? And don’t get them started about Luciana cursing her… That would never have happened with them watching over her. But even with all the craziness, Meredith was glad she left. She made some amazing friends, learned a lot about other supernaturals, and most importantly, she never would have met Donovan if she hadn’t been at St. Ailbe’s. Who could regret that?

  1. Meredith’s nanny, Ciara, is more like her mom than her bio mom.

Meredith and her mother have never seen eye to eye. So, when Ciara sought refuge with the Wayfarers from the Irish Pack, Meredith clung to her. Now that Meredith is going to be joining Donovan’s notoriously cliquish Irish Pack, she’s going to need Ciara more than ever.

  1. For a while, Meredith thought about leaving the packs behind, going to a human college, and getting a job.

Sure, she was cursed to stay in her human for during that time. Since she couldn’t shift, she was basically human anyhow! Why not give it a shot? Seemed like a real chance at freedom from her overpowering pack. And when everything is going crazy, she still things about it. If she were human, what would she be doing? It’s nice to dream.

  1. Meredith is obsessed with reality TV.

Having never been integrated with humans, she finds it unendingly fascinating. Especially Finding Bigfoot. But really, she’ll watch any of it. She also thinks the fact that E! cancelled The Soup to be one of the biggest tragedies of her lifetime so far. When she’s busy at school, she can’t keep up with it all. The Soup was her way to keep up to date with human pop culture in 30 minutes. If anyone can fix this crime against society, she’d been in their debt. And having a Were like Meredith on your side is a very good thing. So, any takers?

In the middle of the night, Donovan gets a call telling him that his pack has gone to pieces. Grand Finale Blitz and Giveaways! HER SECRET LIFE by Tara Taylor Quinn (Where Secrets are Safe #10)

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Book Tour Grand Finale for
Her Secret Life
By Tara Taylor Quinn

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops, go back and check them out…

Launch – Note from the Author

If you’ve never read a ttq novel before, you’re just on the cusp of getting your first introduction. I love glitz and glamour, but it’s not enough for me. My stories look behind the larger than life things that happen in life. They go deep into the messy part of living. The feelings that we all experience, but so often shy away from. The emotions that are confusing. Sometimes threatening. And yet…if we can find a safe place in which to explore them, we can often times find that elusive happiness we’ve been seeking.

The Lemonade Stand is Kacey’s safe place. I hope my books can be one of yours.

Brooke Blogs – Looks (Guest Post)

In Her Secret Life, Kacey and Michael had some things to tell me about looking good. I don’t know that any of us came up with any answers as to why our looks effect how we feel – is it just societal, or is it more than that, a sense of knowing that if we do our best to take care of ourselves, we perform better? But what helped me was to know that when the chips are down, surface beauty really is only skin deep. And that what is underneath is what we need, what turn to and what we draw from, even within ourselves, when challenges face us.

Nicole’s Book Musings – Excerpt

Mike Valentine listened unabashedly to the half he could hear of his lunch companion’s phone conversation the first Monday in March.

“I know. Mmm-hmm.” Her tone was more flirty than not. Glancing at Mike, Kacey rolled her eyes. And then mouthed, Bo.

EskieMama & Dragon Lady Reads – Excerpt

Mike could hear the other man’s voice but couldn’t make out the words as Kacey sat forward in her seat again. She was smiling. And hung up shortly afterward.

He raised an eyebrow at her. She could talk. Or not.

He was good either way.

Thoughts of a Blonde – Review

“Another great book revolving around volunteers at the Lemonade Stand women’s shelter in Santa Raquel. Many of you will recognize Kacey from her twin sister Lacey’s story a couple of books ago. It was great to get to see Lacey, Jem & Levi doing well! With this book, we have a story about two unlikely people to become the very best of friends … and how they adjust when the love they feel for their friend starts to turn into more.”

Angels with Attitude Book Reviews – Hollywood (Guest Post)

They say to write what you know. I’ve never been a soap opera star. I’ve never even knowingly met one. But when I wrote Her Secret Life, starring soap opera star, Kacey Hamilton, I knew a little bit about what I was getting into.

Book Lover in Florida – Excerpt

The women she helped—all victims of domestic violence—benefited from the gentle way she showed them how to enhance their outer beauty with fashion and makeup advice, makeovers and impromptu fashion shows. But they’d been surviving and healing for years without her.

Celticlady’s Reviews – Privilege (Guest Post)

In Her Secret Life Kacey had a blessed life. Her dreams came true and continue to come true. She’s got a job she loves and thrives on it. She loves her condo in Beverly Hills. But when her twin sister gets married, she finds out that the love she’s created for herself is lived largely on the surface. She has things. Ways to spend her time that she enjoys. And in the dark of the night, in the quiet times when her heart has a chance to speak to her, she is…alone.

Deal Sharing Aunt – Excerpt

As owner of MV Cyber Solutions, a successful-beyond-his-imaginings private IT investigative firm with clients in law enforcement—meaning they offered investigative work involving computers and the internet to law enforcement and lawyers—Mike was his own boss with trusted employees. And he could pretty much always squeeze an hour out of his day for Kacey.

He read the email warning her of something that had popped up on the internet over the weekend.

Beck Valley Books – Family Tragedy (Guest Post)

As has happened many times during my career, I found myself inside a book that was going places completely unexpected. All these emotions, from every member of a family…Different emotions. Intense emotions. And a young man who was taking every single one of them upon himself. Wow. I had no idea what was going to happen – where the book would go

Becky on Books – Review

“Sigh…Kacey and Michael–so, so good together! Even if it does take them forever to finally get there. . . . They were so clearly meant to be together, it was painful to read. Yet delicious at the same time.”

underneath the covers – Domestic Violence (Guest Post)

Where Secrets Are Safe, my current series with Superromance, is fiction. It’s entertainment. It’s larger than life. And yet…it’s also a voice. And a lesson plan. It revolves around a resort like women’s shelter set off the coast of California. The Lemonade Stand – Where Secrets Are Safe. The Stand is fiction. The characters and stories are pure ‘Hollywood.’ Many of the avenues for help and change are not. The laws are not. The love that heals, that gives hope for a future that includes real happiness, pure joy, is not.

Kindle and Me – Excerpt

She shook her head but didn’t seem ready to take off, like she needed to sit with a friend she could trust for a second.

Part of him wanted to give her that. So he stayed. This wasn’t the first time someone had posted something derogatory about her. That came with the territory. They weren’t dealing with life and death.

So why did it feel like they were?

Harlie’s Books – Review

“You are fooling yourself is you are NOT reading this series. It’s powerful, emotional, romantic and just so well written. Ms. Quinn tackles the subject matter with a deft hand and also, with compassion for the victims. Bring on the next one.”

Make sure you check out Tara’s visit to Harlequin Junkie on March 8th, the giveaway of His First Choice on Goodreads, as well as the Domestic Violence Shelter Drive and the giveaways below…

New Release and Giveaway! SEXIEST DAD ALIVE by M. Clarke (Knight Fashion #3)

Josh Bennett

It was a simple offer.

I invited Isla to rent a room in my five thousand square foot home. Plenty of rooms and plenty of space. But the second she moved in, I knew I was in trouble. I could handle wanting her when there was distance between us, but once we started to play house, all my pent up desire started knocking down walls.

That was my first mistake of many.

The private investigator I hired to track down my ex found her not far from where I live. I should have locked my past behind me, but something urged me to find her. I’m glad I did. But our union left me with a situation to be reckoned with.

When a new fire is lit and old flames rekindle, one will have to burn out.

The decisions I’ll have to make won’t be easy.

No matter what I choose, my heart will break.

Since Isla moved in, I’d been eating better. Of course I gave in return by taking her out to eat. I wasn’t a selfish bastard, and I wasn’t about to take advantage of her. For a while, I suspected Isla had feelings for me, and I for her, but both of us kept the feeling locked away. I didn’t want to ruin our friendship if things went wrong. But I realized there was a great chance of something happening, even between friends, when you play house.

Isla and I often said things husbands and wives would say to each other: Goodnight, dear. Honey, I’m home. Love you. Don’t forget to pick up milk. The words flew naturally and we laughed it off, but deep in the recesses of my mind, I wondered what it could be like if we did date.

But … but … but … we had crossed the line. I might have started to cross over first, but Isla encouraged it. And damn, she felt and tasted amazing. Fuck! I was going to want more of her. Control yourself, Josh. I had been doing well so far. I just had to continue, especially since I had to find out if Shelly’s baby was mine. And if so, Isla may not want anything to do with me.

Regret rippled through me. I shouldn’t have kissed her, but when her bright green eyes filled with lust, and she lowered her gaze to my lips as she licked hers, I gave in to temptation. I’d forgotten about Shelly until it was over. Then reality flooded back. I had to get my life straightened out before I even attempted to have a relationship with Isla. She deserved the best of me, not the worst.

After I took a freezing shower, I got ready for bed and debated whether to say something to Isla. We’d agreed to pretend nothing happened, and if I didn’t say goodnight to her like I did every night, she would feel like shit. I knew I would. So I opened the door and shot my eyes open wide.

“Isla. I was just about to come see you.”

Her raised fist, ready to knock on the door, dropped while her eyes lingered on my bare chest. “Josh. I—I—you were about to come see me?” She smoothly changed the subject.

When I raked my hair back, her eyes landed on my biceps. Her longing-filled eyes had me so close to giving in to my desire and taking her in my room. Closing my eyes to contain my lust, I inhaled a deep breath to shut out my thoughts and my dick wanting what it shouldn’t. What I couldn’t have.

But shit, Isla. Did she have to look so damn hot in her night outfit—shorts and a T-shirt? She crossed her arms, to hide her nipples no doubt. But that didn’t stop me from envisioning the beautiful breasts I saw, touched, and tasted. Oh hell, I imagined my mouth on them as she stood before me. Her disheveled auburn hair—wild and full—contrasted with her face, looking innocent with no makeup.

I arched my eyebrows, loosening up, trying to get us back to the way we were. “Yes, I was, but why don’t you tell me why you’re here first?” I gave her my goofy grin—lips twisted, tongue slightly poking out, and eyes crossed.

She smacked my arm and let out a delicious, contagious laugh. When her laughter died, my heart died a little too because I couldn’t have her, at least not yet.

“I came to say goodnight. Since we’re starting over, I thought we keep things … you know … normal,” she said hesitantly, eyes darting to the door, to my bare chest again, swallowing, and then to her perfect, manicured feet.

“I’m glad you came.”

Her eyes shot to mine. “You are?”

“Of course I am. I was on my way to your room to say goodnight.”

“Oh. Okay. That’s good. Thanks. I mean. Goodnight.” She stumbled over her words.

Oh hell. I made it that way. She didn’t sound like my friend Isla, but rather a broken and confused Isla.

“Goodnight, honey.” I played along. “Do I get a hug?” I thought to ease the tension between us, but as soon as she wrapped her arms around me, I tightened with the tension of unfulfilled pleasure.

Isla’s touch burned through my skin, and her body molding to mine unraveled me. Her lavender shampoo filled my nostrils, and I wanted to take her to bed and make love to her all night. We stayed entangled longer than we should have, frozen in time and space. Then Isla pulled away, leaving me cold and empty.

Running her hands through her auburn locks, she didn’t notice she had exposed her T-shirt when she backed away. Oh fuck me! Her T-shirt framed her breast, teasing what I could no longer touch or taste. She gasped and crossed her arms again when my dirty eyes reminded her.

“Anyway. I’m going to see my brother tomorrow, and I’m going to spend the weekend with his family, so I’ll see you whenever.”

Why did that feel like a punch to my gut? It shouldn’t. She had done that two weekends before. “Sure. Have fun.”

“You got any plans?” Her long eyelashes fluttered, curious.

“I’m having dinner with Nathan tomorrow, but not much.”

She nodded and took several steps back. “Okay. Have a great weekend.” Then she turned and walked away.

“You too.” I stared at her fine ass and her long legs until she disappeared out of my sight. Inhaling a deep breath, I got back to bed with my laptop to distract me.

A Conversation with Claire McEwen, Author of HOME FREE (Sierra Legacy #3–with a giveaway!)

His first taste of freedom was only the beginning…

Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today, Claire!

Thank you very much for inviting me! I am so excited about my new book and am thrilled that I get to visit you today.

What 5 things should readers know about you?

  1. My stories are all fueled by coffee and Keith Urban songs.
  2. I write really emotional stories and make my characters deal with big problems. They often have a very rocky road to finding love!
  3. If I can put a cute animal or two into a story, it makes me very happy.
  4. I have a degree in environmental studies, and sometimes those types of issues find their way into my stories.
  5. I started writing western romance because I missed riding horses. And I love men in cowboy hats!

You had me at “Keith Urban” 🙂

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

Well, it all started with an image. I had this picture, in my mind, of a couple standing in the woods in the snow, arguing over cattle!

I started thinking more about these characters. And I had an idea that the man was from a very troubled family. That he carried this extra burden of having been raised by a cruel, criminal father. I decided that this hero was named Wade Hoffman, that he had two brothers and one sister, and that his older brothers were criminals, just like his father.

That was the start of the Sierra Legacy series. Each book was developed as another piece of the legacy left by the family’s criminal past. I know that sounds depressing, but it’s actually a very hopeful series! I loved telling Wade Hoffman’s story in my recent book, Return to Marker Ranch.

My new book, Home Free, is the third book in the series.  It’s about one of the older brothers, Arch Hoffman, who actually followed in his father’s criminal footsteps for the first part of his life. In Home Free, Arch has changed his ways, paid his dues, and is trying to start his life again as a much different, and better, person.  It was such a wonderful book to write because Arch has to go on this enormous journey of self-discovery.

I can attest to it being a hopeful series—I really enjoyed Return to Maker Ranch! I love finding out how it came to be 🙂

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I started writing my first book in 2005, because I was uninspired by my life and wanted an escape. In the very first scene I attempted, I fell in love with writing romance and knew it was something I wanted to pursue. I wrote about three quarters of a book, but then my career got very busy, so I stopped writing for years. In 2012, when I quit my career to stay home with my young son, I finally had a little extra time and energy to finish that book. I was very blessed that Harlequin offered me a contract, and A Ranch to Keep was released in 2014.

Love it!

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I have a free online read for Harlequin coming out at the end of December. It’s a short story called Refuge in the Sierras, about two of the secondary characters in the Sierra Legacy series. I had so much fun writing it and I’m very excited to share it with everyone. And did I mention that it will be free?

Then, in May 2017, His Last Rodeo, the fourth and final book in the Sierra Legacy series, will come out.  It’s a fun story, a little different than the rest of the series, and it ties up some loose ends of the legacy that I really wanted to tie!

And after that? Well, I’ll be proposing a new series to my editor in the next few months, as well as working on a contemporary western self-published series, so I hope to have lots of books coming out in the next couple of years.

Awesome—can’t wait to read them all!

What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?

I often read books by authors I want to learn from, and right now I want to learn more about writing dialogue. So I have been reading lots of books by Marina Adair, a wonderful, witty romance writer who crafts fabulous dialogue. And I’m also reading books by Kristan Higgins, Jill Shalvis and Jennifer Cruisie, because they are all absolute masters of engaging dialogue, in my opinion. Fortunately, all of these books are totally fun to read, so I’ve given myself a very happy homework assignment!

I agree—that’s definitely the kind of homework I can get behind 100%!

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Tweeting is hard! I agonize over smooshing my thoughts into that 140-character cage! But here is my attempt.

A man leaving prison meets a woman imprisoned by her own fears. Is their love strong enough to set them both free?

Thank you again for inviting me to visit your lovely blog today!

My pleasure! Thank you again for coming!

Claire McEwen lives by the ocean in Northern California with her husband, son and a scruffy, mischievous terrier.  When not dreaming up new stories, she can be found digging in her garden with a lot of enthusiasm but, unfortunately, no green thumb.  She loves discovering flea-market treasures, walking on the beach,
dancing, traveling and reading, of course!

Goodreads / Amazon

Skye was a coward. She knew that, but she couldn’t bring herself to stay and watch Sid and Aspen commit suicide. There was no way the council would allow Aspen to become queen.

Not to mention that then Skye would have to know the exact moment when she died, because anyone who pledged loyalty to Sid would die the second he did. No, running away was better. She should have enough time to get to her parents before death came. She’d able to say goodbye.

This was her fault. Pearl had told her to keep Aspen safe. Instead she’d gone and made everything worse. Maybe if she’d kept Aspen at home, Sid would’ve been fine.

If she’d never given Sid that damn loyalty seal, she wouldn’t be this close to death. She wasn’t sure what she was thinking at that time. Part of her thought he’d make it. Another part didn’t care whether she lived or died. It wasn’t like she’d have much of a life anymore.

When Sid became King she found Everett and begged him to remove the seal that marked how much she loved him. He did and now she longer had a swirl of gold on her ankle. But Everett warned her there would be a price to pay. She gladly paid it at the time, but but she hadn’t expected to feel so empty.

For a half second she thought about heading to Everett’s instead of her parents. Maybe he could remove the loyalty seal before she died. She shook her head. How cowardly of her. The price would not be worth it. That was for sure.

She was only fooling herself though. She would make the same decision if given the choice. Aspen was the only way they could possibly survive. When Skye dropped Aspen off , there were three possible outcomes. One, she and Sid would die and all those with loyalty seals would as well. Two, Helios, the final dragon that Sid needed to secure all the loyalty seals got to him before the council had a chance to killed him. Or three. Aspen could be become queen. She’d have to convince the council that she should be queen and pass the queen’s tests She hoped Aspen could do it.

She felt her wings tiring. This could be the beginning of her death. She hadn’t known anyone who had died because of the loyalty seal and didn’t know how it worked. She spotted a lake below her and decided to stop and get a drink. She had to make it home.

Skye landed a little rougher than normal. This had to be the end. She staggered over to the water and took a deep drink. The water sparkled under the full moon. Skye stretched her wings out and swiveled her neck around to scratch her nose. She froze. Her wing was no longer silver.

This must be part of her death. Or at least that was what she tried to convince herself of. Adrenaline coursed through her veins and she no longer felt tired. Dragons didn’t change color before they died. In fact dragons never changed color. Except when they became king. Then they turned black.

Skye spun neck around the other direction. It was more than her wings that had changed. Her whole body was now a deep coal black.

This was impossible. There was no way she could become king. Sid was king. Unless he died. Then someone else would take his place, but that someone had to be a full royal dragon and male. Of which she was neither. There had to be some huge mistake. This had to be a dream. She stuck her head in the cold water and came out again. Still black. This wasn’t possible.

That stupid prophecy.

The one that said three kings would rise. The one that said they could come from other races. But she was still female. Something was definitely wrong. She was also still very much alive. She couldn’t go see her parents now, not like this. No, she had to go see the one dragon who could explain how this happened.

She wracked her brain trying to think of everything she’d learned about the prophecy. She loved history and so she studied a lot, but this baffled her. Nothing in the prophecy said anything about a girl. She’d spent hours listening to Everett’s boring details about the prophecy, yet he hadn’t mentioned that females could become kings. He was so in for it.

Alexander’s Blood Bride
A Steamy, BBW Vampire Romance

by Lorelei Moone
Vampires of London, #1
Publication Date: October 13, 2016
Genres: Adult, Paranormal Romance, Vampires, Novella, Romance

Cat has never been a social butterfly. The only reason she even agreed to go to the stupid Halloween party was because her friend and room mate Shelly wanted to attend. When she gets spooked upon almost falling into bed with the host, she’s convinced it was all a big mistake. And what’s worse, now people are stalking her wherever she goes!
Alexander Broderick has been hosting his annual Halloween parties for over a century. While his contemporaries use them as an excuse to engage in all kinds of debauchery, his own motives are more benign. He wants to converse, to get a feel for the times they live in through its people. But when Cat walks into his house, he forgets himself and is compelled to seduce her. There’s only one problem: she’s a so-called Blood Bride – a mortal woman whose blood smells so delicious that every vampire in town wants to drain her.
He knows he’s the only one wanting to keep her safe, but can’t act as long as she wants nothing to do with him. And then there’s his own growing hunger to contend with. Can he protect her from the rest of the vampire community, as well as his own lethal cravings?
It’s the ultimate forbidden romance; the love between a mortal and a vampire. What is it that makes flirting with death so utterly tempting? Read on and find out.

Alexander Broderick stood at the top of the curving stairwell in the center of his Kensington residence, surveying his domain. The party had started at eight sharp, with more guests arriving every few minutes.

His Halloween parties were an age old tradition, even if their grandeur and scale had evolved significantly since the early days. A hundred years ago, he’d been content inviting a few friends and acquaintances, all of them vampire like he was. Now, every year, the event had grown bigger and better, featuring new faces from all walks of life.

Eternity was a very long time to spend in isolation. He craved the change in routine, no matter how hard his maker had tried to discourage him from going overboard in the past. Of course, ever since Julius had taken over the Council leadership, he had other things on his mind than to monitor Alexander’s social life.

Alexander thrived on the attention these parties afforded him. On a night such as tonight, he could step out of the shadows and into normality. Even if some guests noticed strange things around the house, they’d accept it as part of the magic of Halloween. It also helped that he kept the alcohol flowing generously throughout the night.

Tonight was the one night per year that the weird and wonderful became acceptable.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. So many people. So many aromas.

His parties weren’t an excuse to feed as such; no, he could do that any time. But the sheer variety of humankind at his feet was difficult to ignore.

Every vampire in attendance tonight would feel the same way. Alexander smiled as he imagined the depravity that would occur within these walls.

Sex, blood, and rock ‘n’ roll. Alexander couldn’t suppress a chuckle.

They’d keep things clean enough, of course. Everyone here was keen to stretch the rules but not break them. They wouldn’t take things so far as to attract suspicion.

They wouldn’t kill.

Alexander himself would join in the festivities as well. But first and foremost, he enjoyed playing host. He was especially fond of striking up conversations with first-time guests. First he’d figure out how they’d come by an invitation, then he’d guide the conversation toward other topics that interested him.

He was a connoisseur of sorts; like some immersed themselves in fine wines, politics, or even sports, Alexander collected knowledge on the human psyche. Zeitgeist, as some people called it; he loved to learn about that special set of thoughts and ideas that made society tick. In gathering information about how people lived their fleeting lives, he sought to find meaning for his own.

As he slowly started to walk down the stairs, he focused on acting normal; that meant being a lot more clunky and obvious in his movements than his instincts dictated.

He was socializing, not stalking prey!

That was one of the first lessons he’d learned once he started inviting humans to his get-togethers. If you approached them in too stealthy a fashion, they easily got spooked.

Halfway down, his friend Michael nodded a greeting as he passed him by. The much younger vampire wasn’t one to waste time; he’d already found himself two willing females to spend what he liked to call ‘quality time.’ Everyone had certain talents; seduction was his.

Alexander was about to continue down the steps when a presence caught him off guard. He wasn’t sure what it was exactly. A quick scan around the room revealed that all the guests were quite busy entertaining themselves; nobody was looking in his direction.

He sprinted back up the stairs, faster than a human eye could see, and gazed back down to figure out what had affected him so.

The front door swung open and two women entered. One was quite ordinary, and he could hardly tell her apart from the two Michael had just led upstairs. The other, though…

A radiant sight of womanhood.

Her floor length gown was very different from the skimpy outfits everyone else had chosen to wear. Blood red—which in itself would have been enough to entice even the most reclusive vampire among his company.

Raven hair halfway down her shoulder, which swayed with every step she took.

A face flawless, like that of a porcelain doll.

And curves. Her body exuded a richness that made every fiber in his body ache for her.

New Release and Giveaway! MY UNSCRIPTED LIFE by Lauren Morrill

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Release Celebration for
My Unscripted Life
By Lauren Morrill

Excerpt & Note from the Author

I had just moved from Boston to Georgia, didn’t know anyone, and so was spending all my time binging The Vampire Diaries on Netflix. Someone on Twitter pointed out that it was filmed in Georgia, and so I did a little Googling and found out that they were hiring extras! I submitted a photo and my info, and the next day I got a call asking if I wanted to work.

I ended up doing several episodes of The Vampire Diaries (Ian Somerhalder talked to me!), and later some episodes of the spinoff show, The Originals. I fell in love with the crazy behind-the-scenes stuff that was happening on set and all the people on the crew who worked to make the magic happen. And so when I was starting to write my fourth novel, I knew I wanted to use a lot of the stuff I’d seen and learned on set.

And that’s how Dee wound up working as PA for a movie that comes to film in her small Georgia town. This scene is from the first chapter, when Dee and her bestie are talking about the fact that Naz will be heading off to Governor’s School soon, leaving Dee (who was rejected) home alone. And then fate drives by…

From Chapter 1 of My Unscripted Life

A car pulls up to the stoplight in front of the cafe and screeches to a halt. It’s a compact, shiny black sports car, and right away I know the driver isn’t from around here. First of all, it’s about eleventy bajillion degrees outside, and the top of the convertible is up. And when the driver whips into a parallel spot directly in front of our sidewalk table, I know it for sure. Wilder residents have many skills, but parallel parking is not one of them, which is why there are always so many empty spots along Poplar Street downtown.

The door opens and an older man steps out, his silver hair mussed, partly due to some intricate styling and partly due to the fact that he keeps running his hand through it as he glances up and down the street. His crisp, dark denim jeans, boat shoes, and white oxford tell me he’s not only not from around here, he’s from way out of town. I can see the shadow of his passenger through the dark tinted windows.

His frantic gaze settles upon Nazaneen and me, though Naz is oblivious. At this point it would take a real live New York Met walking up to our table and sitting down to get her attention.

“Excuse me,” the guy says, crossing the sidewalk to our table, “do you know where Roff Avenue is?” He holds up his phone. “My GPS keeps trying to get me to turn onto the train tracks.”

I immediately wonder why a handsome, well-dressed guy in an Audi is asking for directions to the part of downtown Wilder where one would stash a body, if there were ever any actual murders in our tiny town.

“Yeah, actually your GPS isn’t wrong. Roff is immediately after the train tracks.” I curve my hand sharply to the left to show him the turn. “It doesn’t even look like a road, but it’s there.”

He stares at me, his eyebrows knit together to form a little canyon of skepticism on his forehead.

“Just trust me and turn,” I assure him. He looks down at his phone screen. “Thanks. You live around here?”

Something about his clipped tone makes me think he’s not looking for any long answers, so I just nod.

“Well, listen, we’re going to be setting up production on a film here.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a black leather case, smaller than a wallet, and from it he produces a crisp white card and passes it to me. Robert Lewin, it reads in shiny black letters, and underneath in italics, Producer, Director. I run my thumb over the raised letters and feel a rush of excitement through my core. This was not at all what I expected when he stepped out of the car. Lawyer? Sure. Doctor? Possibly. But a movie filming in Wilder? This is news that qualifies as a distraction. “We’re still looking to fill a couple PA spots. Just runner-type stuff, but still. If you’re looking for a summer internship, call my office. We can always use a few locals on set.”

It’s not as big a deal as an actual New York Met, but it’s enough to draw Naz’s attention from her phone screen and her floundering team. We’ve just heard that a movie is going to be filming in our small, so-sleepy-as-to-be-in-a-coma home-town.

Naz reaches for the card in my hand and flips it over, as if maybe she’s going to find the words “Just kidding!” printed on the other side.

“A movie? For real?” she asks.

“For real,” he replies. He sticks out his hand for me to shake. “Rob Lewin.” There’s a look on his face like maybe we might recognize the name, maybe even that we should, but I don’t. One glance over at Naz, who is giving him a purposely blank stare, tells me she doesn’t either. It’s not like we’re country bumpkins. We see plenty of movies, Once football season ends, it’s pretty much the only thing to do on a Friday night. And I could name most of the actors in them. I’ve just never really paid much attention to directors other than, you know, Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese (he’s a director, right?).

“Like, a real movie?” I ask.

“I don’t make fake ones,” he says.

Naz is still not convinced. “Who’s in this movie?” She manages to keep her hands from making the implied air quotes, but her voice betrays her heavy skepticism.

“Well, it stars Milo Ritter, and—” Rob begins.

“Oh my God,” I blurt out. My voice comes out as a whisper, which is good, because I worried it would be a shout.

“The singer?” Naz snorts. I know she’s thinking back to our slumber parties the summer between sixth and seventh grade, when we’d make up dances to Milo Ritter songs and perform them for her older sisters in their backyard. We both used to have a poster of him hugging a beagle puppy, his bright blue eyes and white smile beaming down at us from above our respective beds. He was only fifteen when he released his first album, so it was way too easy to crush on him.

Rob chuckles at the mix of shock and disdain. He glances over his shoulder, then back at us, his mouth quirked into a wry smile. “Yeah, the singer. He’s trying something new. This’ll be his first film.”

Naz chuckles too. She hands Rob’s card to me, apparently satisfied with his legitimacy. “Good thing,” she says. “His last album sucked out loud.”

“Naz!” I stare wide-eyed at her.

“What? It was like music to have a coma to,” she says, and shrugs.

I shoot Rob an apologetic smile and hold up his business card. “Thanks. I’ll have to check with my—” I stop myself just before I say “parents.” I barely look my seventeen-almost-eighteen years, so he has to know I’m in high school, but I don’t want to seem like a child. “I’ll think about it and get back to you.”

Rob nods. “You talk to your mom and dad and let me know,” he says. “Oh, and where’s a good place to eat around here?”

“The Diner,” Naz and I reply in unison.

“Best burgers in town,” I tell him, and point him down the road and around the corner and give him strict instructions to order the onion rings. He climbs back into the sports car and pulls away.

I watch the taillights disappear around the corner. “Okay, did that just happen, or am I having a stress-induced stroke?”

I feel light and tingly, like I’m in that hazy space between dreaming and awake. Naz, on the other hand, looks completely nonplussed.

“You’re definitely having a stroke if you’re thinking of calling that guy,” she replies.

“What? Why? It’s not like I have anything else to do this summer.”

Naz winces at the reminder of our impending separation. Even though I told her over and over not to, I know she feels guilty for leaving me. It’s not her fault the admissions committee immediately recognized her science genius but found my art two rungs below amateur.

“I’m pretty sure doing nothing is better than getting ax-murdered by some ‘director,’ ” she says. This time she definitely hooks her fingers into air quotes.

“You just don’t like him because he’s a Yankee fan.” I wave the business card in her face. “He’s legit!”

She snatches it from my grasp. “Lemme see about this.” She holds the card in one hand and her phone in the other, typing the name in with her thumb. Within seconds, the screen is filled with links topped by a row of photos of the man who was just standing in front of us.

“Oh my God, is that—” I point, and Naz taps the tiny photo until it fills the screen with Rob in a sharp black tuxedo clutching a shiny golden statue.

“Okay, so he might be legit,” Naz says. She clicks back and opens his ScreenData page. The list of credits for movies and TV shows looks endless—stuff he’s written, directed, produced. Some of the titles I recognize, but there’s not much listed that I’ve actually seen. Mostly stuff that gets talked about on the public radio station my parents listen to, mentioned in the same breath as all the major movie awards and festivals. Like I said, I like movies, but I’m not much of a film buff. But just from looking, it’s clear he’s definitely legit.

I take the business card back from Naz and stare at the text. I may not have a best friend, and my future may still be in question, but I may have just solved the summer-plans problem.

New Release and Giveaway! MAKE ME STAY by Rebecca Brooks (Men of Gold Mountain #1)

Make Me Stay
by Rebecca Brooks
Men of Gold Mountain #1
Publication Date: October 3, 2016
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Brazen, Romance

Samantha Kane is about to solidify her father’s legacy by developing sleepy Gold Mountain into the most profitable ski resort in the country. There’s one man standing in her way though. One very sexy, rugged man. When she shows up to convince Austin Reede to sell, she has no intention of hiding her identity. But with a body like his, she’ll take a few risks to get closer.

Austin was the fastest skier on the U.S. Olympic team, until he shattered his knee. Gold Mountain became his refuge—and now Kane Enterprises is threatening that home. When he meets Sam, he has no idea she’s the one to blame, he just knows the attraction between them is one he hasn’t felt in years. A scorching hot one-night stand is just what he needs. Little does he guess that it will change everything…

Outside the snow was coming down hard, coating the parking lot in a layer of white. The weather in Seattle was dependably gray. All they’d gotten this winter was rain and more rain and that dreaded wintry mix. Sam stood in the middle of the parking lot and tilted her face to the sky.

Snow clung to her lashes and melted down her cheeks. She could see it coming toward her, illuminated by the outdoor lights from the bar, but higher up where the lights didn’t reach everything was darkness. The flakes seemed to emerge straight from a dizzying abyss. She felt Austin come up behind her, the solid weight of him dangerously close. She knew how unfair she was being to him, and how much of her job she was putting at risk.

But she couldn’t make herself pull away.

“It’s beautiful,” she said quietly.

“I know.”

He pulled out a strand of hair that had gotten tucked in her scarf.

“Where’s your hat?” he asked. But it was more like a whisper, his lips brushing close to her ear.

“I forgot it,” she said hoarsely. Her mouth was dry.

He ran a hand over her hair, smoothing out the snow. “Do you want mine?”

Sam turned to face him. Her whole life, her whole career, was spent calculating risk versus reward. How much risk could the company assume when they bought new land? How much would they be rewarded for the chance they took?

She knew not every risk wound up being worth it. But zero risk meant zero gain. Wasn’t that the whole philosophy that had gotten her father’s company where it was? Knowing when to take the plunge. Damn it, Austin was gorgeous, even with a gray wool hat pulled over his ears. And he was funny, thoughtful, kind—

She wrapped her gloved hands around his scarf and pressed her lips to his.

There was a pause in which he seemed surprised—was she wrong? Surely he wanted this, too. And then his arms were around her and he was kissing her back. The voice in her head stating firmly that this was a very bad idea tasted sweetness and warmth, and for a moment there was only silence. The world, her mind, even the wind itself had gone still.

Then a burst of noise came from behind them. A couple walked out of the bar and headed to their car. It was the reminder Sam needed. Nothing about their situation had changed. She couldn’t get caught up in the romance of the falling snow.
