FAERIE RESEARCH AND OTHER FANCIES

Honestly, the research for this story was long-anticipated because I adore spending way too many hours browsing through art books, looking at paintings on line and yes, gaping at a stunning work in a gallery. Astonishingly, there is a world of art and information on faeries that opened up to me through Pinterest. Then I had a friend who sent me articles from her Fairy magazines that she’s subscribed to for years.

Trust me, I realized then I was really missing something here.

Years ago, about twenty of them, I had a friend, a budding film producer, whose dream was to film documentaries. She was contacted by a woman who lived in Wyoming and whose two young daughters claimed that they saw faeries in their wildflower studded meadows.  My friend went to Wyoming to document these sightings. Though she did not capture hours and hours of tiny winged creatures on film, she did get some. Mostly, they appeared as fairy-shaped light. They were brilliant white. It wasn’t that she captured a face, per-se, but she did photograph the outline. The documentary never came to pass. (Not enough money…as is almost always the case.)

But that incident stayed with me. I’d always wanted to write a story that involved faeries. Though there is nothing supernatural in the story telling in this Heartwarming story, I was piqued by the prodigious world of information about fairies. Folklore and mythology from ancient Celtics to Shakespeare, to Sir Walter Scott and William Blake in the 1790’s illustrate that fairies have been a source of delight and fascination to many generations.

Though considered part of the super-natural world, which means we can’t see them—unless photographed, of course, in my story, Isabelle paints faeries because she is unconsciously healing her inner child. Robbed of a real childhood when her father died when she was 11, fate forced her to take on adult responsibilities too young. At the juncture when Scott proposes and she turns him down, she has just begun to truly heal herself. Her psyche knows that she is not healed enough to be a wife, much less a mother to two foster children. It’s no wonder Isabelle would like to sail to the stars with her faerie prince—who looks astonishingly like Scott.
