Melissa Chambers, Author of FALLING FOR FOREVER, Tells Us 10 Things She Wishes Someone Had Told Her About Being An Author (with a giveaway!)

10 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Being An Author

10 – Your characters follow you around all the time. You can’t get away from them. You’ll be driving in the car and miss your exit because your character is playing out the next scene for you. And when the book is finished, they still don’t go away. They keep talking about new scenes that you don’t have time or purpose to write. (But sometimes, you still do.)

9 – Your butt grows. I think the technical term is secretary spread. You sit all the time, and your body adjusts to this change over time. Of course, this has nothing to do with the chocolate almonds.

8 – Everything’s a possible novel. You can no longer just enjoy a cute story someone tells or a funny incident. You start thinking about how you can turn it into a scene or a novel.

7 – There are a million workshops and craft books out there. Every one does not work for every writer. Take what works for you and your writing process and toss away the rest.

6 – What you are writing can deeply affect your mood and your close relationships. When I’m in the thick of writing a black moment, I get very depressed. I have to remind myself and my family that it’s just the book getting me down, and nothing is wrong. Alternatively, you are in the best mood when your characters are experiencing falling in love or are otherwise having a great time.

5 – Books are painful to write…not only emotionally, but physically. You should have ice packs and wrist guards ready for when you feel the pain coming on.

4 – If it’s not already tough, your skin will thicken. I think writers must be among some of the strongest and most willful people out there. We experience tons of rejection before we get that one publishing victory, and then the rejection is still there in negative reviews and rejected story ideas. But we are a resilient bunch. And it’s a good thing we are!

3 – You feel guilty all the time. If you aren’t writing, you feel guilty. If you are writing, and your family is in the next room having together time, you feel guilty. I need absolution from the guilt!

2 – When you finish a book, you mourn the loss of your characters. They are still with you, but it’s not the same.

1 – There’s no stopping. You think you’ve got this one story in your head, and as long as you get it written, you can wash your hands of this whole writing bug, but there’s no ignoring that next story knocking at your brain.

Thanks, Becky, for having me on, and for giving me such fun topics to choose from! I had a really hard time deciding!

The second Jenna Quigley turns eighteen, she’s headed to L.A. to extend the timer on her fifteen minutes of fame. Too bad her dad made her promise to graduate high school first. Silver lining? Her new school has a serious talent competition with a $25,000 cash prize, which would go a long way in L.A. Jenna’s got plenty of talent—she didn’t almost win America’s Newest Sensation for nothing. But it’ll take everything she’s got to bring down the music nerd with a stick up his butt…no matter how cute he is in those glasses.

Miles Cleveland needs to win that talent contest. When some hot girl stole his audition spot on America’s Newest Sensation, his chance to study music flounced off to New York with her. Now, not only can he win enough money to pay for his education, he can get revenge on that very same girl. He can’t start to question his plan, though…no matter how deep Jenna buries into his heart.
