Moments, later, they approached Carl Miller’s home. Meg stared at the two-story building. Even though she knew he was wealthy, she hadn’t expected such an elegant residence on this remote island. Several of the upper story rooms had balconies. A stone façade around the lower level gave the house a sturdy, solid look, while large windows added a light, airy touch. In front stood three totems painted in the traditional Northwest Indian colors of red, blue, and black.

Jones pulled the cart to a stop. “Gotta get the keys to your cottages from Laureen. You might as well come in and meet her.”

Meg followed Eric and Jones up a stone walkway lined with ferns to large double doors carved with Indian designs. Jones pushed open one door, and they stepped into a spacious, sky-lighted entry….

Footsteps sounded on the marble floor, and a woman appeared from the house’s interior. She wore tan slacks and a white tunic top. Her gray hair was cropped close on the top and sides, and long in the back.

“Welcome to Gemini.” Smiling, the woman extended her hand first to Meg and then to Eric. “I’m Laureen, Carl’s house manager.”

After greetings were exchanged, Jones said, “Where’re we putting ‘em?”

“Guest cottages. Miz Evans in Wolf House, Mr. Richards in Bear.”

“The cottages are named after Indian clans,” Eric commented.

Laureen nodded. “You’ll like ‘em. They’re very comfortable. Here’re your keys.” She dipped a hand into her tunic pocket and pulled out two key rings, handing one to Meg and the other to Eric. “Oh, and Carl wants you for cocktails before dinner so be back here by six. And don’tcha be late. Carl’s a stickler for bein’ on time.”
