New Release (Box Set) Review! JUSTIFIABLE CAUSE by Adirenne Girodano (THE CHASE, THE EVASION, and THE CAPTURE)

Included in this novella series are:

THE CHASE

Hard-driving attorney Jo Pomeroy is as determined as she is sexy—in other words, a major pain in NYPD Sergeant Gabe Townsend’s butt. Working together on a high-profile task force charged with busting sales of counterfeit goods has been rocky from the start. And Jo’s penchant for trouble is as difficult to ignore as her spectacular legs.

The world of knock-offs isn’t as frivolous as it appears. The purses are fake, but the danger is all too real—and Jo seems hell-bent on putting herself in the middle of it. Her investigations have uncovered valuable leads for Gabe’s team, but they’ve also drawn the wrong kind of attention. Now, she’s on the radar of a mysterious smuggler not afraid to use violence to evade the law. At the risk of their lives—and their hearts—Gabe and Jo must find him before he finds them.

THE EVASION

His role on an anti-counterfeiting task force earned NYPD Sergeant Gabe Townsend the catch of a lifetime—tough as nails but sexy as hell Jo Pomeroy. The woman has a body that drives him wild and a way of attracting danger that’s making him crazy. And her relentless pursuit of an elusive criminal has his protective instincts in overdrive.

Jo didn’t get to be a hotshot attorney by giving up easily. Her high-end clients count on her to keep knockoffs of their luxury goods off the streets. Distractions are the last thing she needs. Especially six-foot-three, hard body calendar-worthy distractions.

She failed once, letting a smuggler slip through her grasp. Next time, he’ll have nowhere to run. A lead takes Jo and Gabe to a small town where not everything—or anyone—is as innocent as it seems. Making this bust could be the biggest break of her career…but at what risk to her newfound love?

THE CAPTURE

Sun, fun, and Jo Pomeroy, the sexiest, most-driven attorney around, await NYPD Sergeant Gabe Townsend in Los Angeles. A trip to the West Coast is the perfect vacation—he won’t have to hide his relationship with Jo from the New York anti-counterfeiting task force, and he can finally enjoy some overdue time-off with the woman of his dreams.

Jo makes undercover deals for fake merchandise, but her feelings for Gabe are all too real. Unfortunately, she isn’t the one on vacation, and while she can’t wait to get her heartthrob alone, she also can’t say no when the mayor of Los Angeles asks for her help in ridding the city of illegal knockoffs.

Being too dedicated for her own good backfires when Jo ends up on a killer’s hit list. Gabe wants Jo to back down; she’s not about to. As the danger escalates, so do their feelings for each other. All Jo’s ever wanted is to expand her task force nationwide. Now, with her life on the line, Jo must decide if heading the taskforce is worth sacrificing it all, including a future with the man she loves.

Reviews:

THE CHASE

So much fun! Finally, I got the chance to read about Jo and Gabe before they were (technically) “Jo and Gabe”! 🙂 Snappy dialogue, fantastic chemistry (as a bonus in this one, it’s a forbidden work romance, and they’re still fighting it!), and a fast-paced story all add up to an explosive series start. I was glad that this one was novella-length, because I had a lot to do this week and I didn’t want to stop reading once I’d started! The shorter length totally worked here, and since I was reading the box set, I didn’t have to wait to find out what the next phase of their brand-new non-work relationship would bring.

The Chase has everything a good romantic suspense story needs–and you won’t be able to stop with just one of this series! 😉

Rating: 4 stars/ A-

THE EVASION

Once again, the action is non-stop for intellectual property attorney Jo Pomeroy and her now-beau NYPD sergeant Gabe Townsend. They’re keeping their relationship under wraps, which is stressing them out, but when they’re alone and away from work? Watch out, because these two are hotter than ever together! The main bad guy from book one ( The Chase ) is still on the loose, though, and Jo and Gabe are determined to bring him to justice.

Their quest takes them down south, and OMG watching alpha male and super-intense Gabe have to deal with a small town sheriff who is out of his office (leaving it locked and empty) more often than he’s in it? So. Funny. Jo is up to her old tricks too, trying to do it all in her quest to rid the world of counterfeit items and practically giving Gabe a heart attack in the process. Seriously, it’s amazing these two make it through to book 3, but I sure am glad they did!

Once again the novella format absolutely worked here, and Ms. Giordano’s tightly developed plot kept me on the edge of my seat right up to the very end…at which point I was more than ready to dive into book 3 ( The Capture )!

Rating: 4 stars / A-

THE CAPTURE

I actually read book 3 for the first time a while ago–at that time it was the only one in the series I’d read–and I was thrilled to re-read it again, this time right after devouring books 1 and 2. Have I mentioned how much I love Jo and Gabe’s relationship? In book 3,it reminded me a lot of Castle and Beckett’s back when they were still trying to keep theirs a secret; like them, Jo and Gabe aren’t exactly fooling much of anyone but, hey–nice effort 😉

Like any good romantic suspense hero and heroine, even being on vacation doesn’t stop the danger. (Also like any good romantic suspense hero and heroine, they pretty much invite trouble to join them on their trip out of town.) An accidental witness to murder, Jo’s soon on the hit list of a dangerous motorcycle club, and Gabe has to work with an LA lieutenant who’s been a part of Jo’s new task force to keep her safe.

Only, you know, he’s not really working, because he’s on “vacation”.

Can Gabe keep Jo safe? Will Jo be able to stop a counterfeit cigarette ring? Will they ever have a real vacation, with actual relaxation and a lack of death threats and everything? You’ll have to read The Capture to find out!

(Meanwhile I’ll be sitting here quietly, hoping that Ms. Giordano is going to give us more Jo and Gabe in the not-so-distant future…)

New Release Review! DEADLY ODDS by Adrienne Giordano (Casino Fortuna #1)

Deadly Odds
by Adrienne Giordano

Synopsis:

At Casino Fortuna, stakes are high and the nights are hot…

FBI agent-turned-consultant Kate Daniels hit the jackpot with her new assignment. A cheat is cashing in on the Strip, and she’s hired by Vegas’ biggest name to ensure his glamorous casino isn’t a target. Fortuna is a high roller’s paradise, all gleaming marble and dollar signs. Even a single flaw in security could cost big bucks. Kate can’t afford distractions. Especially the tall, dark and perfectly chiseled kind. Business and pleasure don’t mix. And sleeping with the boss is a dangerous gamble.

Fortuna’s VP of casino operations, Ross Cooper, is gaming’s golden boy. He’s got a head for business, an eye for beautiful women, and a love for the Vegas lifestyle. When he spots a gorgeous redhead casing his blackjack tables, Ross is more than a little intrigued—he’s suspicious. But Kate is no thief…she’s working for him? Ross hates surprises almost as much as the idea of trouble in his casino.

Kate quickly proves she’s more than a pretty face. Her instincts and smarts are just as enticing. And when her investigation turns deadly, Ross will risk it all to keep her by his side.

Review:

Yay! A new series by Adrienne Giordano 🙂

I have to admit, what I know about gambling would fit on the head of a pin. A very, very small pin. I went to a casino once with my mother while we were in the Bahamas–we played a quarter slot machine once each and then left with no desire to return or do more. So the world in which this series is set is completely foreign to me, though I’ve read (and loved) Sarah MacLean’s The Rules of Scoundrels series and adored the Ocean’s Eleven movies. (The George Clooney version, obvs.) However, that didn’t stop me from loving the story, its characters, and yes, even the setting.

(Though I finally Googled “mini bac” at about the 2/3 point. I had no clue what on earth it could possibly be, it had become increasingly clear that it was going to be of some importance for the plot. It refers to mini baccarat, apparently. It’s a kind of card game–though I at least had that much sussed out on my own!)

So it was safe to say I wasn’t going to be figuring out the solution to the “suspense” part of this one solo–though I was all over the “romantic” portion of the story! 😉

Despite my ignorance of casinos and how cheating might be carried out in them, I had a lot of fun reading this first-in-the-series book. I loved both Kate and Ross, and Ross’s coworkers (his assistant Marcia, who rules the office with an iron fist and Don, the head of casino security) were absolutely awesome. I’d sign up for the rest of series based on the camaraderie of those three alone–four, if Kate will ditch her loser boss and consent to join their team. Each and every time Don offered to make Kate his “number four” I just had to smile. Because yeah, the guy’s a charmer. His old-school sexism aside.

But Ross…now that man’s a whole ‘nother story. And when he’s together on the page with Kate? The sparks are definitely flying. Now if they can just figure out who’s managing to cheat the casino–preferably before anyone else gets killed–they might have a chance at an actual relationship and not get fired…

Anxiously awaiting book two! I can’t wait to see where this series is going to go 🙂

Release Week Review! PROTECTING JUSTICE by Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano (Justice Team #4)

Protecting Justice
by Misty Evans

Synopsis:

As the premier political spin-doctor in the U.S., Fallyn Pasche can fix any problem–except her own. Her twin sister, Heather, a United States Senator, has been murdered, her father is barely speaking to her, and someone is after coded files Heather hid in a private safe. In order to decode the files and figure out what happened to her twin, Fallyn turns to the Justice Team. What she doesn’t expect is the sexy bodyguard who shows up needing a little personal fixing of his own.

Tony Gerard sees failure every time he looks in the mirror. The former Supreme Court police officer lives with the knowledge that the Chief Justice—a man who was like a father to him—died on his watch. Now he’s sure he can’t protect anyone. When his first assignment for the Justice Team lands him in the media spotlight, working side-by-side with the country’s foremost political fixer, Tony wants to run the other way. But Fallyn’s devil-may-care attitude and tantalizing beauty bring out all of his protective instincts.

As Fallyn and Tony peel back the layers of a government scandal that threatens to bring down the most powerful man in the world, sparks fly along with the intoxicating danger. Desire and passion escalate with their perilous search for the truth as they find relief in each other’s arms from their respective demons. When an unexpected enemy puts Fallyn’s life on the line, Tony is forced to face his own failures in order to help her conquer hers. But will he once again fail to protect someone he loves?

Review:

I love this series! Un-putdownable suspense, great characters, witty dialogue, and pretty darn sexy romance–every book’s got ’em. Fingers crossed that Ms. Evans and Ms. Giordano have plans for many, many more!

I was so happy to see Tony was getting his own story–he didn’t have a big part in book 3 (Exposing Justice), but if anyone deserved to get his mojo back and get an HEA, it’s him. I loved him and Fallyn together; even when they were driving each other crazy (or is it especially when they were driving each other crazy?) their story was so much fun to read.

The mystery/suspense part of the book is well written, and will keep you turning the pages to see what is going to happen next. There were many twists that I wasn’t expecting along the way, which makes reading a romantic suspense story all the more fun.

I also loved seeing past series characters again–even Syd and Grey’s (Stealing Justice) cupcakes were back for an encore performance! 😉 If this is your first Justice Team book, though, don’t worry–it would work just fine as a standalone too. (But seriously, you’re going to want to read the rest of the series, and soon. Did I mention how much I love them all? Yes?)

Please, Ms. Evans and Ms. Giordano, say you’re going to give us a lot more Justice Team books!

New Release Review and Giveaway! DOG COLLAR COUTURE by Adrienne Giordano (Lucie Rizzo Mysteries #3)

Dog Collar Couture

Title: Dog Collar Couture
Series: Lucie Rizzo Mysteries
Author: Adrienne Giordano
Release Date: May 10, 2016
Publisher: SilverHart Publishing
Genre: Mystery

Book Summary:

Mafia princess turned canine couturier Lucie Rizzo knows dogs are woman’s best friend. Thanks to her fashion-forward four-legged clients, Lucie’s dog walking/designer pet accessory business is booming. And for once her love life isn’t far behind.

Lucie devotes her days to building the Coco Barknell brand, but her nights are all about roguishly sexy Tim O’Brien. At least they will be if she and Detective O’Hottie finally take their relationship to the next level. But bring an Irish cop home to her mobster father? Fuggetaboutit.

Lucie’s knack for finding trouble lands her in the doghouse—and on the six o’clock news. Someone’s absconded with a million-dollar piece of cinematic costume history, with Lucie the only witness to the crime. Not to mention the prime suspect. To clear her name, she’ll need an assist from her entire wacky crew: friends, family…and future (hopefully) lover.

Excerpt:

“Hi, Dad.”

He appeared in the doorway that led from the small dining room to the kitchen. He wore flat-front slacks and a crisp, baby-blue dress shirt. “You’re late. You said you’d be home by five.”

Welcome to living at home with a protective father. “I know, but the walks ran long.”

“You should call if you’ll be late.”

Sigh. “Okay, Dad. Sure.”

The door behind her opened and whacked her hard enough to send her spiraling forward. Whoopsie. To keep from falling, she hooked her hand on one of the staircase spindles, gripped it hard enough to pop a knuckle and fought a battle with momentum. She hung on for a second—whew—and pulled herself back to her feet.

Joey stood in the doorway holding the door open for Ro.

Ro rushed in, her arms out. “Luce, are you all right?”

“Luce,” Joey said, “what the hell are you doing behind the door? I could have killed you.”

“Thanks for your concern, Mr. Sensitivity.”

“Hey, next time, don’t stand there.”

“Joey,” Ro said, “zip it.”

He scrunched his face and stabbed his hands in the air. “What? Now it’s my fault?”

“Joey,” Dad warned in that low, scary voice that always made his son snap to, “shut that mouth.”

Review:

Another fun read from this series!

Poor Lucie–once again in the wrong place at the wrong time–or is it lucky Lucie? Sometimes it seems that the crimes she gets herself inadvertently involved in are almost less complicated than her own life–her mob boss father’s back from jail, her new (maybe?) boyfriend’s an Irish cop, her best friend is getting hot and heavy with Lucie’s brother–a stolen couture dress almost seems like a minor detail…

Except that Lucie is a possible witness/possible suspect, and once again, having the Rizzo name could be a problem.

But this time she has Tim O’Brien/O’Hottie firmly on her side. And they’re about to go public…maybe (squeee! And maybe do even more. Finally!). And Lucie might just throw herself into solving the crime with a bit more enthusiasm than Tim can handle

“It was a random thing. We didn’t start it. We were just in the wrong place.”

“At the wrong time. I know. That happens a lot.”

She scrunched her nose and growled–growled–at him.

So damned cute. And infuriating. The two sides of Lucie. Killing him.

Yeah, something tells me he’d better get used to it, because I’m seriously hoping this series is just getting started!

So. Much. Fun!

New Release Review! DOG COLLAR LIMBO by Adrienne Giordano (A Lucie Rizzo mystery in the RED SOUL CLUES anthology)

Dog Collar Limbo
by Adrienne Giordano
a part of the Red Sole Clues anthology

Synopsis:

Mafia princess and furry fashion maven Lucie Rizzo can’t shake her penchant for trouble. When her favorite client is snatched from a dog show, Lucie and her zany sidekicks will pull out all their tricks to stop the dognapper.

Review:

A cute–and quick!–mystery!

Limbo takes place after the events of  Dog Collar Knockoff (but if you haven’t read it yet, no worries!) during a local dog show that Lucie and Ro are attending both as vendors for their new doggie accessory line and to support Otis, one of Lucie’s favorite clients. Naturally, their brand new significant others, Tim “O’Hottie” O’Brien and Frankie (Lucie’s brother–yep, she’s still having issues with that one) have tagged along as well. And it’s a good thing, too, because they’re going to need everyone’s particular talents to solve the mystery that soon unfolds…

It was great seeing Tim and Lucie together, being all cute and couple-y. The couple that busts criminals together stays together, right? I hope so–because I love those two 🙂 (Heck, it worked for Hart to Hart, so that’s a good sign, surely?)

This was a quick read–I read most of it on my lunch break, and still had time left over–and will help to tide Lucie’s fans over until her next novel…or whet the appetite of new readers!

New Release Review: UNDERCOVER JUSTICE by Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano (a Justice Team novella)

UNDERCOVER JUSTICE
Justice Team #3.5
By Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano
Published: December 20, 2015

Synopsis:

Sin City isn’t ready for Mitch Monroe…

The cocky, irresistible Justice Team member is about to take Vegas by storm with his partner, sexy FBI sniper, Caroline Foster. They’re on the hunt for the missing daughter of a US Senator who might be the victim of foul play.

But is Mitch ready for Sin City?

Caroline—the only woman Mitch has ever loved—must go undercover as a contestant taking the place of the senator’s daughter on the hottest reality TV show of the year. While bachelor after bachelor throws himself at Caroline, Mitch must sit by and watch, knowing each and every one of them is a possible suspect.

What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas.

Mitch has never been one to play by the rules or sit on the sidelines. Manipulating his way into a spot on the show, he becomes Caroline’s dream mate, and the lines between fiction and reality begin to blur. But when the chips are down and Caroline’s life is in danger, can Mitch—a bachelor to his core—handle the sin, sex, and a night of debauchery that could end with a band around his finger?

Review:

It was so much fun to jump back into the world of Caroline Foster and Mitch Monroe!

I thoroughly loved every minute I spent reading this novella. Caroline and Mitch have moved comfortably into their jobs with the Justice Team, though in their personal life Caroline’s mother is making things a little less-than-comfortable with some not-so-subtle hinting about wedding planning. Mitch loves Caroline, knows she’s “it” for him, but is equally convinced that marriage just isn’t an option.

I know. Men.

Their personal controversy gets put on the back burner, though, when their boss–and Mitch’s best friend, Grey–gives Caroline a new assignment: go undercover at on a Vegas-based reality show to find a senator’s daughter who has disappeared. Mitch, who first wasn’t supposed to go and next wasn’t supposed to show up on the set, is dragged into the show as well and then the sparks start to seriously fly. These two can always be counted on for great banter and steamy scenes, but throw in a skanky wardrobe (for Caroline) and some sleezy guys to get Mitch’s jealous streak going? You’ve got gold.

So much fun to read. Naturally, they get their guy and save the girl–and maybe get a bonus event in there somewhere too. You’ll have to read it to find out, though 😉

Undercover Justice is part of the Justice Team series. If you’ve read the others (especially Mitch and Caroline’s story,Cheating Justice ) you’ll love this addition. If you haven’t, it should still work well as a standalone–though the fun, sexy writing style and characters will definitely have you adding the backlist to your TBR pronto!

New Release Review and Giveaway! THE REBEL by Adrienne Giordano (Harlequin Intrigue)

The Rebel

Title: The Rebel

Series: Harlequin Intrigue

Author: Adrienne Giordano

Release Date: October 1, 2015

Blog Tour Dates: October 1, 2015 – October 9, 2015

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Summary:

Bad to the bone…in all the right ways

A brilliant civil lawyer, David Hennings has always been the outsider—at odds with his wealthy family, shunning relationships, defying convention as a sexy leather-jacketed biker. Which is why sculptor Amanda LeBlanc agrees to his request to reconstruct a skull from a cold case murder. The instant heat between them is scorching.

But once Amanda takes the job and gets too close to the rebellious attorney, her carefully balanced life is upended by a series of methodical attacks. Someone doesn’t want her to finish the job. Now David will risk everything not to lose the woman he unknowingly put in jeopardy.

* * *

Excerpt:

Inside the stairwell of the hundred-year-old building on the city’s West Side, David climbed the last few steps leading to the landing of Amanda’s second-floor studio. He loved these old structures with the Portland stone and brick. The iconic columns on the facade urged the history major in him to research the place. Check the city records, see what information he could find on who’d built it, who’d lived here or which companies had run their wares through its doors.

Structures like this had a charm all their own that couldn’t be duplicated with modern wizardry. Old buildings, this building, had a life, a past to be researched and appreciated.

Or maybe he just wanted to believe that.

He rapped on the door. No hollow wood there. By the scarred look and feel of its heavy weight under his knuckles, it might be the original door. How amazing would that be?

The door swung open and a woman with lush curves a guy his size could wrap himself around greeted him. She wore jeans and a graphic T-shirt announcing he should make love, not war—gladly, sweetheart—and her honey-blond hair fell around her shoulders, curling at the ends. The whole look brought thoughts of lazy Sunday mornings, hot coffee and a few extracurricular activities, in a bed and out, David could think of.

To say the least, she affected him.

And she hadn’t even opened her mouth. Please don’t be an airhead.

“David?”

Yep. That was the voice from earlier. Soft and sweet and stirring up all kinds of images right along with Sunday mornings and coffee. With any luck, more than the coffee would be hot.

Hokay. Mission Pam Hennings getting derailed by wicked thoughts. Time to get serious.

“Hi. Amanda?”

“Yes.” She held her hand out. “Amanda LeBlanc.”

David grasped her hand and glanced down at her long, elegant fingers folding over his. Her silky skin absorbed his much larger hand, and he might like to stay this way awhile. Nice hands. Soft hands. He’d imagined a sculptor’s hands to be work-hardened and rough. Not that she swung an ax all day, but he’d expected…different.

“Um.” She pointed at their still joined hands. “I kinda need that hand back.”

Epic fail, Dave. He grinned and regrettably slid his hand away. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but where have you been all my life?”

As recoveries went, it wouldn’t be listed among the top hundred in brilliance, but a man had to work with what he had. Still, her lips, those extraordinary, shapely lips, twisted until she finally gave up and awarded him with a smile.

“Good one,” she said. “Come inside and we’ll talk about your project.”

Review:

The Rebel, Adrienne Giordano’s latest romantic suspense (in the same world as The Prosecutor , The Marshal , and The Defender) is a fast-paced, sexy read. The hero “rebel” of the story, David Hennings, is the elder sibling of “prosecutor” Zac and “defender” Penny. He’s be working as a civil lawyer in Boston, but has just returned to town to try and mend fences with his family and start his own practice. He’s barely moved back when his mother, the Chicago queen bee socialite who he claims “everyone is afraid of”, has gotten him involved in her latest cold case project–finding the identity of the owner of a skull discovered in an empty lot by a homicide detective’s dog while out on a walk.

David’s job? To convince artist Amanda LeBlanc, a gifted sculptor, to do a facial reconstruction on the skull. Amanda, whose forensic artist mother never fully recovered from helping to send an innocent man to prison with one of her drawings, is reluctant to help but eventually gives in. And then all heck breaks lose–the building where her apartment and studio is located is condemned by the city, her bank accounts are frozen–and that’s just the beginning. Coincidence? Unlikely–especially when the cast of the skull she’s started work on is stolen in a break-in. Soon she and David are racing against time and an unknown adversary to solve the years-old crime…

David and Amanda share an instant attraction and have solid chemistry. Neither’s been too great with relationships in the past, but David succumbs to the inevitable rather quickly (especially when his mother, who he’s admitted being afraid of multiple times–with love, of course–tells him she’s determined to make Amanda the newest member of the family) and it’s really sweet to watch him be all protective of her. Amanda’s slower to come around–especially once she gets a hearty dose of the sometimes volatile Hennings clan (David and Penny have been at odds for years, but spend the novel trying to mend fences with varying degrees of success), which sets off her warning triggers. She can’t deny the attraction, though, or the fact that David makes her feel safe in a world that’s rapidly spinning out of control…

The Rebel is a solid addition to the series–I loved spending time in this world again, and it was great to revisit so many past characters. I can honestly say I didn’t figure out “whodunnit” until Ms. Giordano revealed it, though there were subtle clues along the way and once it was all revealed it made sense. David and Amanda’s relationship did progress quickly, but it was fairly believable and impossible not to root for them.

A pity there aren’t any more Hennings siblings for future books, though… 😉

New Release Review and Giveaway! EXPOSING JUSTICE by Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano (Justice Team #3)

A new Justice Team series novel–yay! 🙂

Exposing Justice

About the Book:

Title: Exposing Justice

Authors: Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano

Release Date:  July 13, 2015

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Summary:

Fans of the Justice Team Series will love this action-packed third installment!

As a Public Information officer for the US Supreme Court, idealist Hope Denby knows how to spin a story. A journalist at heart, she loves being in the middle of a juicy scoop and has her sights set on future Press Secretary for the White House. When the Supreme Court Chief Justice is accidentally killed in a road rage accident, and a high-profile conspiracy blogger claims it was premeditated murder, Hope has to shut down the paranoid blogger—which should be a slam dunk until she discovers he’s not as crazy as she thought and she has more in common with the secretive, hard-hitting investigator then she’d like to admit.

Cyber resistance against government corruption isn’t just a theory for Brice Brennan on his blog, The First Amendment Patriot. As a former ATF agent who blew the whistle on his superiors, he’s no stranger to government cover-ups and scandals. An anonymous tip on the Chief Justice’s death sends him searching for answers. What he finds is a sexy, young idealist about to blow his private, behind-the-scenes world to pieces.

Brice and Hope couldn’t be more opposite, but exposing justice makes them partners—and puts them on the track of a ruthless killer. As their investigation takes them into the dark underbelly of Washington politics and murder-for-hire, it also takes them into the bedroom where passion erupts and emotional walls crumble. But when the killer makes an attempt on Hope’s life, will Brice be able to keep her safe? Or will blowing the whistle on corruption and greed mean losing the one person he’s allowed himself to love?

Review:

I honestly LOVE this series. Each time a new book comes out, I think now this hero and heroine is my favorite! and then another book is added to the series and the list shifts again…

I liked Brice the blogger in the last novel, Cheating Justice when he played the reluctant sidekick/foil to Mitch and Caroline; in his own book, though, he totally brings it. He’s still reluctant–hiding behind blackout curtains in his home, going by the aliasHawkeye, not wanting to get close to or trust anyone–not the members of the Justice Team, and certainly not the overly-enthusiastic, much-too-naive Hope Denby of the Supreme Court’s Public Information Office. But he’s gotten a tip that the accidental death of the Chief Justice might not be an accident, and like it or not, he’s gotten Hope’s attention–and her help.

And the Justice Team’s pulling an assist, darn their Superhero-like souls.

Brice and Hope make a fantastic team–I loved that they started calling each other Bernstein and Woodward (but found it really sad that who those guys are had to be explained–surely that’s not a sign that I’m getting old, right? Just knowledgeable about U.S. history?) They also pull into their investigative team a guy who will surely be a future Justice Team hero, Anthony Gerard, the slain justice’s bodyguard.

An excellent choice, since his investigative skills are stellar, he knows how to handle a gun, and he will obviously make a fantastic hero.

Which is crucial, because I need this series to continue for a loooong time. 😉

Exposing Justice, the third full-length book in the series (there is a holiday novella before it), would work okay as a standalone if you haven’t yet read the rest of the series. You’ll love the relationships between all the team members you’ll see here, though, so I can guarantee you won’t want to stop with just one.

Excerpt:

Brice Brennan sat alone at his computer watching a blinking cursor. He needed a story. A kick-ass story that no one else had.

And time was running out.

It was only three o’clock in the afternoon, yet he sat in the dark, courtesy of his blackout curtains. Today’s blog had to be up by nine. Fifty-five thousand and sixty-three fans, and six new advertisers, were waiting for it. After he’d exposed the United States’ deputy attorney general and the ATF’s collaboration on a gunwalking scandal recently, his readership had exploded.

His readers wanted scandal. Real journalism, not sugarcoated updates running ad nauseam or ratings-whoring gossip passed off as investigative reporting.

Tick-tock.

Brice tapped his thumb against his desktop. Three big news stories had flooded the blogosphere today. Each held potential for him, but none yet had generated any calls from his covert, and oftentimes dissident, sources.

Knowledge was power. Once he hit on a story, he became engrossed in it. He wouldn’t let it go until he exposed the truth.

As if summoned by his sheer desperation, his phone rang—the private tip line running through his computer. Brice’s pulse jumped. This could be it. The tip he was waiting for.

“‘The duty of a true patriot is to protect his country from its government.’ This is Hawkeye. Go.”

The Thomas Paine quote was his motto and what he founded the blog on. He recorded all his tip calls through the computer, which meant all of them ran through the speakers since he never used headphones. When you were always alone, what did you need headphones for?

“Hawkeye, this is Lodestone.”

Lodestone was a government employee who seemed to enjoy being Brice’s informant. He’d never said as much, but Brice knew the type. Knew the man had connections Brice could only dream of, and best of all, Lodestone never asked for money. “Go ahead, Lodestone. I’m listening.”

“I have information about the death of Chief Justice Raymond Turner this morning.”

A spurt of adrenaline shot through Brice’s limbs. “The road rage accident?”

“It’s no coincidence that he got held up on that bridge.” A pause—Lodestone deciding how much he could share? “A sensitive case was on the docket for Turner to decide whether the Supreme Court would hear it or not. Look into it. You never know what you might find.”

The line went dead.

Brice disconnected and stared blankly at the screen. If Turner’s death wasn’t an accident…

The screensaver had appeared on his computer. The Patriot Blog’s logo of an eagle. He tapped a key to wake the computer up, ready to start digging, when three loud knocks on his door interrupted him.

The first three were followed by a single knock.

Brice hung his head.

The coded knocks meant only one thing.

The Justice Team had arrived.

Maybe if he didn’t respond, they’d go away.

“Open up, Brennan,” Justice “Grey” Greystone called from the other side.

Brice swore under his breath. If he played possum, pretended he wasn’t even there, Grey would…

“Or I’ll have Mitch pick the locks. Either way, we’re coming in.”

How long was this going to go on?

Jumping up from his office chair, he hustled to the door, unlocked the three deadbolts and doorknob, and cracked the door open two inches.

“I’m not interested, Grey,” he told the leader of the Justice Team standing on his front porch looking like the Federal agent he used to be. Dark clothes, fake smile. Batman in his Bruce Wayne persona. “We’ve already had this discussion. Six times by my count.”

The weak smile on Grey’s lips struggled to stay in place. The man never smiled unless his fiancé was in spitting distance. He was trying to appear friendly and inviting. Mostly, he looked constipated.

“There are perks.” Grey glanced at Mitch, aka, Robin, and nodded.

When all else fails, go to your wingman.

“Like what?” Brice asked, chewing on the side of his thumbnail. “Being shot at? Having to send your girlfriend undercover as a stripper? Oh, yeah, that sounds better than medical insurance and vacation days.” He switched his gaze to Robin. “Oh, and how about being framed for your best friend’s murder? It’s hard to top that as a perk.”

Grey’s hard eyes turned to pure steel. Although the Justice Team’s past operations had all ended successfully, each one had put the members in extreme situations where things could have gone south in a hurry. Brice had been in on one of them in New Mexico with Mitch and his girlfriend, Caroline. Brice was lucky he was still breathing. They were all lucky they weren’t in jail.

Mitch grinned and shoved his way inside. His coat was unzipped and it fell open to reveal a T-shirt that read, I put the Hot in psychotic. He took up residence in Brice’s leather recliner with a big plop and Grey followed. “Jesus it’s dark in here. Are you a vampire or something, Brice?” He didn’t wait for an answer. “As far as perks, you get to look at my handsome face every day, Brice buddy. Best. Perk. Ever.”

Psychotic did not begin to describe Mitch Monroe. Brice left the door ajar and went back to his chair. He didn’t like people in his space. Especially not Batman and Robin.“I’m sure Caroline enjoys that, but it takes more than a pretty face to make me want to give up my blog.”

“You don’t have to give up your blog, right, Grey?” Mitch nodded without waiting for his boss to agree. “Investigating conspiracies is exactly what we want you to continue doing.”

Cyber resistance against government corruption wasn’t just a theory for Brice. The First Amendment Patriot blog was his life. While he valued his privacy and didn’t like to call attention to himself, he had a strong internal sense of right and wrong and had no trouble blowing the whistle on corrupt politicians and government agencies. Others appreciated what he did. Donations to the blog paid his bills and he cared little about material wealth or possessions. As long as he kept his lifestyle lean, he’d be fine.

Tick-tock.

Grey didn’t look all that happy about Brice keeping his blog “We have nine open cases right now that involve crooked politicians, lobbyists, and potential cover-ups. Your skills and contacts would help tremendously.”

Brice’s ego did indeed like it, too. He was damn good at running his blog, and he’d once enjoyed being part of a taskforce. Lived for his job as an undercover ATF agent. The commendations in his folder had proven his worth, and the team of men he’d worked with had always had his back. Failure had never entered his mind.

Until his boss—his former partner—and the ATF sent him down in flames. The men he’d been closer to than his three brothers turned on each other.

Those days were over. Lesson learned. Never trust anyone.

Facts were more trustworthy than people. Detachment and autonomy were important to doing a good job.Exposing government coverups and bringing dirty cops, politicians, and even heads of the most powerful agencies in the world to heel from the safety of his computer was what he excelled at now.

“I’m no longer a team player.” Truer words had never been spoken. Swinging his chair around to emphasize his point, he turned his back on the two men he had let into his personal circle and now regretted. The safety of his computer beckoned. “I just got a lead on a breaking story, and I’m not coming to work for the Justice Team. Show yourselves out, ladies.”

Behind him, the leather chair squeaked as Mitch stood. An uncomfortable silence followed, complete with strained murmuring—Batman and Robin trying to figure out their next move.

Let ’em talk.

“What story?” Grey asked.

“Chief Justice Turner. The road rage accident that killed him may not have been an accident at all.”

“Murder?” Mitch slapped him on the back. “Make you a deal, Brice, ol’ buddy. You join the Justice Team, and I’ll help you investigate your lead on Turner.”

He was grinning like his offer was an obvious slam-dunk. Brice stood, grabbed Mitch’s arm and hustled him to the door. “I don’t need your help, Mitch, ol’ buddy, and I can investigate Turner’s death on my own.”

Mostly true. If there was anything worth investigating.

Grey stood at the computer, looking at the screen, one hand cupping his chin. “What makes you think Turner’s death was murder?”

“I got a tip from a very reliable source.” Brice didn’t need to prove anything to these men, and yet, the investigator in him liked the credibility. “Claims Turner had a sensitive case on his docket that he was deciding on whether the court would hear it or not. Maybe nothing, but he told me to look into it.”

“Sounds far-fetched to me. The Chief Justice probably had a long list of possible cases for the Court to hear.”

Mitch jerked his arm out of Brice’s hand. “Yeah, and every one of the plaintiffs believes their case is sensitive. It’s going to take a lot of work to dig into each and every one of them.”

A smile—the genuine thing—crept over Grey’s face. “How about I make you a deal, Brice? We help you get Turner’s list and do the digging. Save you a lot of time. If, of course, you help us out with a few of our cases.”

He itched to jump on this right away, but he didn’t need help. What he needed was for these two to leave him alone. “I’ll think about it and let you know my decision in the morning.”

Grey seemed unfazed by his delay. “Fair enough.”

After Batman and Robin left, Brice dropped back into this chair. A few clicks of his keyboard and he had the phone number for the Public Information Office of the Supreme Court.

He’d do his own investigation, like always. If that lead nowhere, he’d consider Grey’s deal.

As the phone rang on the other end, he smiled to himself. Nothing like a good conspiracy to get the adrenaline flowing.

Book Summary:

She’s captured his heart…and the attention of a murderer.

Injured homicide detective Brodey Hayward needs a distraction, and he finds it as a consultant on a cold case murder. When Brodey’s investigation delays plans to remodel the former crime scene, he uncovers another kind of distraction: spirited Lexi Vanderbilt. Despite her distrust of men, Brodey charms the alluring interior designer into helping him examine the case facts.

Working closely with the ultrasexy detective helps Lexi lower her guard, igniting a passion that even Chicago’s winter can’t cool. As they close in on the killer, Lexi becomes his new target. To save her, Brodey must either betray her trust—or risk losing Lexi forever.

Review:

Detective Brodey Hayward’s off from work due to a disability, and ready to climb the walls. So when his younger sister Jenna (heroine of The Marshal ) asks him to take a quick look at a cold case she’s investigating, he figures he’ll be in and out before anyone in the department is the wiser. What he doesn’t plan on is the case pushing his something’s-not-quite-right button. Or the distracting woman the grieving widow’s hired to redecorate the murder scene so it will finally sell…

Interior designer (don’t call her a decorator!) Alexis Vanderbilt has only a few days to stage the former murder scene, a job that could finally put her brand new business firmly in the black and enable her to get a much-needed assistant. If only that infuriatingly sexy off-duty detective would let her rip up the floor in the laundry room, AKA the scene of the crime…

The Detective is another great read from Ms. Giordano, filled with her trademark sexy-yet-funny writing and just the right amount of suspense to temper the romance. Even when Lexi and Brodey are at odds with each other, they find it hard to deny their attraction. And when they give in to it? Look out…

He touched her nose, grinning at her because—holy hell—he might be crazy about this woman. “I love intelligent women.”

Obviously wanting to play, she tapped his nose. “I love intelligent men. Especially ones who offer to sleep on my sofa—instead of trying to get lucky—so I don’t have to be alone.”

“But I did get lucky.”

“After you said you’d sleep on the sofa. See how this works?”

Brodey cracked up.

So. Fun.

Along with the sexy-fun times, there’s a pretty decent mystery here, with a surprising twist toward the end. All in all, The Detective was a great addition to the series, and an all-around entertaining read!

New Release Review: THE CAPTURE by Adrienne Giordano (Justifiable Cause #3)

A novella romantic suspense series–perfect for a busy schedule!

Synopsis:

Sun, fun, and Jo Pomeroy, the sexiest, most-driven attorney around, await NYPD Sergeant Gabe Townsend in Los Angeles. A trip to the West Coast is the perfect vacation – he won’t have to hide his relationship with Jo from the NY anti-counterfeiting task force, and he can finally enjoy some overdue time-off with the woman of his dreams.

Jo makes undercover deals for fake merchandise, but her feelings for Gabe are all too real. Unfortunately, she isn’t the oneon vacation, and while she can’t wait to get her heartthrob alone, she also can’t say no when the mayor of L.A. asks for her help in ridding the city of illegal knockoffs.

Review:

This was a short, but satisfying read–I read it in a single sitting. (Can you call it a “sitting” when you haven’t gotten out of bed yet? I love lazy days off…)

Reading about established couples is fun–when done well, it’s even fun when you haven’t read the rest of the series. (I haven’t–yet. But you’d better believe I’m going to now–since they’re novellas, it’ll be easier to squeeze them in ;)) I enjoyed Jo and Gabe’s relationship–it reminded me a lot of Castle and Beckett’s back when they were still trying to keep theirs a secret; like them they weren’t exactly fooling everyone but, hey–nice effort 😉
