New Release Review! HER OUTBACK SURPRISE by Annie Seaton (Prickle Creek #2)

Synopsis:

Angie Edmonds is content with life in her small town. Being alone doesn’t bother her. Really. Until Liam Smythe, the man who broke her heart, shows up at her vet clinic with an injured puppy. Unfortunately, he’s just as irresistible as she remembers. In an attempt to prove to him that she’s moved on, somehow a little white lie begins…

When Liam returns to help run the family farm, his enjoyment of the slow life in Spring Downs surprises him. After all, he’s used to the thrill of chasing the next big story. Running into the girl he’s never been able to forget is unexpected, and he’s shocked to learn she’s getting married–to someone who’s not him. She’s off-limits, but Liam can’t stop thinking about the gorgeous vet and what could have been. But convincing her he’s changed will be harder than finding a needle in a haystack.

Review:

Her Outback Surprise is a sweet, second-chance romance set in–you guessed, it–the Australian Outback. It’s second in its series, but if you haven’t read the first book yet ( Her Outback Cowboy ) no worries; the bits you absolutely need to know about it are explained here too (why Liam and his cousins come back to the family farm, and what their plans for the future are, more or less) though the fact that this is the second book does make for a somewhat awkward start to this one with a bit of jumping around time-wise.

Overall I liked Angie and Liam, and it wasn’t hard to root for them to (finally!) be together in the end. The flashback bits felt a bit superfluous, though (especially since their important bits were usually recapped through a character’s thoughts and/or conversation a minute or two after) and this was definitely an example of a story whose main conflict could have been resolved with one decent conversation between the MCs, which was definitely frustrating. Liam especially was guilty of being exceptionally dense for about 90% of the book, and Angie tended toward the wishy-washy side of the spectrum more often than I would have liked–still, this was a pleasant way to spend a cozy fall afternoon reading.

Plus, there was a cute puppy and a newborn baby in the mix, so–win-win! 🙂

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Conversation with Annie Seaton, the Author of HER OUTBACK COWBOY (with a giveaway!)

Welcome, Annie! What 5 things should readers know about you?

  1. I am determined to be a successful writer.
  2. I am passionate about my career and put in long hours each day to write the best stories I can.
  3. I love taking photographs of nature.
  4. I am the owner of the naughtiest dog in the universe. His name is Toby.
  5. I love to travel around Australia with my husband in out caravan (trailer)

Hmmm…I’m not sure about #4…mine might give him a run for his money 😉

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

The inspiration for Her Outback Cowboy came from a camping trip out to the Pilliga Scrub when our children were small. I listened to the farmer and his wife tell me about their romance and how they met on a working holiday. She went back to England, and he came home to the farm. Many years passed but I always remembered their story. We went back out there last year and I took beautiful photos of the outback sunsets and paddocks, and as I did, the idea for a story set out there was born.

Nice! I like how little things in real life can lead to the most amazing story ideas 🙂

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I have wanted to be an author for as long as I can remember.  When I was four-years-old, my mother took me to a library and my love affair with books was born on that day. My mother always encouraged me to read, and the love of reading grew into a desire to write my own stories. I finally started writing six years ago, and I haven’t stopped! I have written twenty-seven books in that time and am fortunate to have been signed by both an American, and an Australian publisher.

That’s fantastic! Twenty-seven books? Amazing!

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

Oh, lots and lots!

Books 2,3 and 4 in the Prickle Creek Series are underway. Her Outback Christmas will be out in October this year, and Books 3 and 4early in 2018.

I have just completed the galley proof check for Diamond Sky, which is available in print in Australia and New Zealand, and e-book in the rest of the world on 27th June. It s Book 3 in the Porter Sisters series

I have just signed a contract with one of the big five publishers for two romantic suspense books. Whitsundays, a historical novel, will be published in September 2018, and Undara a year after that.

Awesome! Can’t wait 🙂

What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?

I have just started reading The Chocolate Tin by Australian author, Fiona McIntosh, and I am loving it. It is reminding me of the setting of Downton Abbey, one of my favourite TV series.

Oh, mine too! I’ll have to add that to my TBR!

If you had to “”sell”” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Glamour of the city, or a hot cowboy! What is there to choose!

LOL—I like it!

HIDE YOUR HEART by Tracey Alvarez

Such a sweet read! I loved the characters–Lauren and Nate, naturally, but also Lauren’s brother Todd and sister-in-law Kathy and Drew, of course–he is absolutely adorable, with his monkey-roni and the Superman picture–too cute! 🙂

Lauren’s fighting some pretty big demons–she and her son escaped an abusive relationship and a life she’d never asked for in New York City, seeking refuge in rural New Zealand. Once a world-famous model, she’s dyed her hair, changed her look, and keeps herself apart from everyone but her immediate family. She’s afraid of being recognized, afraid of the paparazzi, and afraid to let anyone outside her family in. She originally befriends Nate somewhat reluctantly in order to get him to change his plans for the property next door, but the more she gets to know him, the more she wants him, even though she knows their relationship can’t last…

Having recently lost his mentor, Nate’s taking a break from his photojournalism to rehab a house he’s bought sight unseen. (Okay–he saw pictures, but they were misleadingly old and hugely inaccurate.) He’s in way over his head, so he enlists the help of a neighbor–a neighbor who’s less than thrilled to notice his new boss’s interest in his sister. Nate’s drawn to Lauren and charmed by his son, but has always believed that his would be a solitary existence–leaving a family to chase work around the globe just wouldn’t be right, after all. That’s what his mentor always told him…didn’t he?

I loved watching Lauren and Nate grow closer, and seeing Drew work his magic on the confirmed bachelor. Tracey’s new series is starting out beautifully–this book doesn’t quite have the same lighthearted feel to it that her Due South series does, but it’s written with her same trademark humor. I loved every minute I spent reading this one, and look forward to book two–which will star Nate’s equally famous (and in at least one aspect, equally infamous) cousin.

ANNIE SEATON – Beach House (Bondi Beach Love)

Rosie Pemberton has her life mapped out, and her tarot cards agree. The cards take a turn, though, when her aunt leaves the old house on the hill above Australia’s Bondi Beach to champion surfer Taj Brown. Three months sharing a house with a pinup would test any woman’s self-control… (Heat level: Steamy)

 Review:

Beach House is a quick read with characters it’s easy to like.

Taj and Rosie start their relationship off on the wrong foot–they’re both the only beneficiaries in an elderly relative’s will (her foster mother, his great aunt) and he’s going on the (mistaken!) assumption that the house they’ve both been left is being used by her and her friends as a house of ill repute. Fortunately he soon sees the error of his ways; unfortunately he also sees the surfer god posters of him that still grace her bedroom walls before she can get rid of the evidence…

Though this story definitely could have benefited from a longer format–Taj’s knee problem and their conflict over the house are both resolved fairly quickly and easily, considering–it’s still a nice piece of escapism that can be read in a sitting or two.

A quick trip to the beach with an Aussie flavor! 🙂

Excerpts:

Annie Seaton: BEACH HOUSE

By the time he showered and limped back down the stairs, the house was quiet. He tapped on the door of the room Rosie had directed him to, and waited for her to open the door. He didn’t want to seem too eager.

“Come in.” Her voice was brisk as she stepped back to let him enter the dimly lit room. A strong smell of massage oil wafted over to him as she pointed to the privacy screen at the back of the small room.

“Slip down to your jocks, and lie face down on the table. Give me a call when you’re all settled.”

She stepped outside as he walked over to the screen and stripped down, hanging his jeans and shirt on the hook provided. He was looking forward to this. He always enjoyed a remedial massage and Rosie’s hands on him would make it even more enjoyable.

“I’m done,” he called out as he settled face down on the table and put his face into the soft vinyl ring, and looked down at the floor. A click was followed by soft music; the same sort of music they’d played in that alternative soul place in the Maldives. He closed his eyes as two warm hands gripped his calves and straightened his legs.

“Hmm.” Her voice was soft but with a tinge of concern.

“What’s wrong?” Taj tried to lift his head and look around but his position face down on the massage table made it too difficult. Rosie stretched his leg back and then the other.

“Which knee is the bad one?”

“The right one.”

“Hmm.”

“Hmm…what?”

“Your left leg is a fraction longer than your right. Do you have back problems?”

“No. Just the bloody knee. I’m as fit as a Mallee bull apart from the knee.”

“Hmm.”

Taj closed his eyes and let Rosie work her magic. He tried to focus on the remedial aspect of the massage but her firm hands sliding up and down the backs of his calves and thighs, and the smooth sensation of the massage oil on his skin sent tingles up to his groin. He swallowed and focused on the patterned carpet on the floor beneath the table. He counted the roses, then counted the leaves on the winding stems. The tightness that had been building in his groin began to lessen, until her warm hands reached his lower back.

God, he didn’t want to have a hard on when she rolled him over. But then all thoughts of pleasure flew out the window as her firm fingers hit a nerve at the base of his back and she pressed. Hard. Bloody hard.

“Holy shit.” He almost jumped off the table. “What the fuck’s that?”

“Breathe it out.”

“Breathe it out! I can’t bloody breathe. What the hell are you doing?”

“You want your knee fixed?”

“That’s not my knee.”

Serenity Woods, A SECRET BETWEEN FRIENDS

Genie took a swallow from her cup and shrugged. “I can understand why you’re mad—that was pretty embarrassing.”

“It’s nothing to do with Tamsin.”

She frowned. “What do you mean?” He didn’t reply, and after a few moments her eyes widened. “You’re not talking about Danny, surely?”

He looked out across the bay and drank his coffee.

She huffed out an irritated sigh. “Niall, seriously? You know we were winding you up, right? Anyway, me and Danny?” She laughed. “That’s as funny as saying me and Jonah. All the guys are like brothers to me.”

“Including me?”

Humor lit her eyes. “No, Niall. Excluding you.”

“Why?”

Her smile faded. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t think of me like a brother?”

“I trust you like one. I respect you. You drive me nuts the same as the others.”

He couldn’t bring himself to smile. “Why were you and Danny winding me up?”

“I thought that was what we all did to each other.”

Not now, he thought. Maybe a long time ago, he’d thought of her like a sister. But no longer.

A frown flickered across her brow again. “Why are you so angry with me?”

“I’m not angry with you.”

“Then…”

“I don’t want you to see anyone else,” he said.

He waited for the outburst. For her cry of indignation. For her to yell, Who the hell do you think you are?

It didn’t come. Instead, her lips curved a very tiny bit, and her eyes shone in the moonlight.

“Okay,” she whispered.

He held her gaze for a while. Then they both turned back to the view and sipped their coffee.

He couldn’t think what to say. He felt confused, hopeful, and frustrated, all at the same time.

After a few minutes of silence, she put down her glass and limped off to the laundry room.

He waited a moment, then put down his glass and followed her.

When he reached the doorway, he leaned on the jamb and watched her, hands in his pockets. She was folding up some washing she’d done earlier, placing tops on hangers and laying jeans over the clothes stand.

She glanced up at him, then back at the washing. What was she thinking? She’d expressed no resentment at his demand, and he couldn’t understand why. Hadn’t it irritated her? She’d always been fiercely independent, disliking any guy who tried to make demands on her. But the only word to leave her mouth had been Okay. Why had she said that?

His gaze slid down her, noting the curve of her waist and hips, the swell of her breasts as she leaned over the machine to reach the basket. The pale skin of her neck and behind her ear. How pink her lips were, and her beautiful Cupid’s bow.

She didn’t look up again, but twin spots of red touched her cheekbones. He tilted his head to look at them, and the color intensified.

A smile touched his lips.

He pushed off the doorjamb and walked into the room. Took the washing from her hands and threw it into the basket.

Her lips parted, but she didn’t object, her breathing coming quickly as he turned her to face him.

Bending a little, he caught the bottom of her dress in his hands and lifted it. Wordlessly, she raised her arms so he could pull the dress up over her breasts and head, and he dropped it to the floor.

Review:

Still working my way through this one! Reviews to come as I finish…

Melting into You by Tracey Alvarez:

Life hasn’t been easy for Kezia Murphy. Four years ago, her precocious daughter Zoe fought and won an epic battle with leukemia. In the midst of that struggle, Zoe’s dad was lost to them forever in a senseless accident. Once Zoe recovered, Kezia packed up their belongings for a fresh start on Stewart Island, determined to never again depend on people who would ultimately let her down. Ever since, it’s been her and Zoe–with a tiny bit of help from a small group of select friends, Piper and Shaye Harland among them–against the world.

Enter Ben Harland. He’s the oldest of the Harland siblings, and he is so absolutely out of the question as far as Kezia’s concerned. Sure, he’s hot. But can you say commitment phobe? Ben’s got two rules: one, never mess around with local women; two, ditto friends of his sisters. Kezia’s a check mark in both columns, thankyouverymuch. Soooo not going to happen.

Except they have a crazy attraction going on…which they maybe could have kept on ignoring. Until a major surprise shows up on Ben’s doorstep one Saturday morning…

His eight-year-old daughter Jade. Whose existence Ben knew nothing about until that very moment–and suddenly, he’s got a pint-sized house guest for two weeks. And not a clue what to do with her.

But, hey–Kezia teaches eight-year-olds. Heck, she has an eight-year-old–and Zoe’s already decided that Jade’s going to be her new BFF.

So, no problem. Ben can get a little help from Kezia for the next two weeks, squeeze in a one-night-only fling with her somewhere far away from prying Oban eyes, and send his daughter back to her mother at the end of the holiday, none the worse for wear. And then he’ll have his life back, no sweat.

Riiiight. You know how well that’s going to work out, don’t you? 😉

Though it is the second in the series, Melting into You can be read as a stand-alone. Piper and West, the hero and heroine of  In Too Deep, make just enough of an appearance to whet your appetite for their story, though–don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Release Day Spotlight! TEN DAYS IN TUSCANY by Annie Seaton (A Men of the Zodiac novel)

Another Men of the Zodiac novel–yay!!!

TDIT Banner

Ten Days in Tuscany
Men of the Zodiac novel by Annie Seaton
Sign: Cancer

One lie will ruin everything…

Gia Carelli waits tables in her small Tuscan village, dreaming of a life in which her overbearing family allows her to move to Florence to pursue art. Everyone expects her to marry a nice local boy and raise a horde of bambini, but when a gorgeous, wealthy stranger visits, Gia wonders if maybe her stars are about to change.

Nic Baldini has returned to his Tuscan Villa for a much-needed break from the responsibilities of his powerful family. Struck by local artist Gia Carelli’s raw talent and passion, he finds himself wanting to help her…and lies about his identity in order to gain her trust. But as theirpatron-protegée relationship is quickly eclipsed by desire, Nic realizes that one tiny lie could cost him the woman he’s falling for.

Excerpt:

Hmm. Let me see. Can I find a spot that needs attention?” Nic’s voice was low, and he was so close to her it vibrated through her skin. Gia looked down at his chest and her eyes lingered on the beautiful script that was embedded into his skin.

Coraggio.

“So that is the tattoo. Courage, Nic?” She grinned up at him as she placed both of her hands on the word that was inked on his skin. “I have no doubt you have plenty of that.”

Slowly he lowered the brush, and for a moment, Gia thought she’d escaped retaliation for daubing his cheek with paint.

“Maybe you need a little courage. Do you think, bella?”

He grabbed both of her hands with one of his and held the brush high with the other. Her breath caught as Nic used his body to gently push her back against the wall. She watched fascinated as he lowered his head and caught the thin straps of her singlet top in his teeth, and the stubble of his chin brushed her shoulder as he slid the strap down with his teeth. A shaft of pure desire ran from her shoulder and honed straight between her legs. If Nic hadn’t been supporting her with his body, Gia would have slid down the wall into a useless heap; her legs were trembling with anticipation.

She swallowed and lowered her voice. “Courage for what?”

Nic lifted his head and held her gaze. “Coraggio. To have faith in yourself and your exhibition.” His eyes were half-closed, but Gia watched with fascination as he leaned back and lowered the brush. The first strokes on the top of her breast were feather soft, and she tipped her head back and closed her eyes. A half swirl for the C and her fingers tingled with the need to touch Nic, but he still held her hands firmly in his. His brow was creased with concentration as his eyes remained firmly fixed on her breasts as the brush tickled her. The circle for the O was painstakingly slow, and she was sure he was deliberately taking his time to complete each letter. The R was completed just as slowly, and Gia closed her eyes when Nic began the next letter. The paint was cool on her skin, and the sensation of the tip of the fine brush was sending quivers to her belly.

Hmmm. We have a problem.”

New Release Review: GUARDING HIS HEART by Annie Seaton (Half Moon Bay #3)

The trilogy is complete!

Some people get under your skin.

Some get into your heart.

Bestselling author Liam Wyndham needed an escape, and Half Moon Bay, with its small town charm and beautiful ocean, is the perfect place to hide out from the scandal surrounding his estranged dead wife. A place where he can enjoy his writer’s block in sweet isolation. But all of his plans to become a surly recluse disappear when carpenter Georgie Sacchi marches into his house…

Georgie wants an adventure, and she has a plane ticket that promises her everything she needs—excitement, independence, and a way to escape the memory of her last ruined relationship. Still, she has one last job to complete before she can leave the country. The last thing she needs is a recalcitrant author with a gorgeous face (and a hot body) distracting her from her plans.

But life doesn’t always give you what you think you need…

Review:

Such a sweet read–and another great addition to the Bliss lineup!

I loved that the heroine was the tradesperson and that the hero was the author–nice twist. (I am totally lusting after those two rooms full of bookshelves too–can I get me some of those? Preferably in a house on the coast as well, if it’s not too much to ask ;))

Georgie and Liam were an adorable couple, and their meet cute was just that–even if touched with a bit of insta-love. They could have communicated at bit better–there was an awful lot of second-guessing and internalizing going on–but overall I really enjoyed their story.

Couple #1 (Ana and Blake from Tangling with the CEO: A Half Moon Bay Novel ) are in the book in name only, and Couple #2 (Sienna and Jack from Brushing Off the Boss ) are in and out of the action, but this book would work fine as a standalone if the first two books are new to you.

Title: HOT ROCK

Author: Annie Seaton

EBook: 200 pages

Release Date: February 24, 2014

ISBN: 978-1622664832

Blurb:

Megan Miller is on a dream trip to research her doctoral thesis at a rock festival in England. When she arrives in town she’s stunned that her temporary neighbor is the spitting image of her 70’s rock idol, too bad he’s also a world-class jerk. So why can’t she stop thinking about him?

Seventies rock star Davy Morgan is a man with a secret: rockin’ in one time and living in another. He holds his privacy close to his heart, so when a beautiful girl who not only loves but truly understands his music moves in next door, he works overtime to keep her at a distance. Easier said than done.

Megan follows Davy to the rock festival, but it’s not what or when it seems. The lure of the music draws them closer, but can their newfound love span across the decades, or will it get lost in time?

Review:

I was really intrigued by the premise of this book. A rock star who travels back and forth through time, spending most of his time hiding out in the future, returning to his actual time only to put on concerts, record albums, and go on tour? Using ley lines and ancient standing stones to time travel? A woman meeting and falling in love with the celebrity her teenaged self worshiped? So very promising!

In execution the novel doesn’t quite live up to the promise–too many things are left unexplained. First of all, where is the actual 2014 Davy Morgan? We learn that one of the band members is dead–Davy sees his grave while in the present–but no mention is made about what happened to Davy. He’s supposed to be living in the Caymans as a recluse, but we know it’s actually Davy from the past who lives there. Can he exist twice in the same place? Or has he actually ceased to exist in the modern time? It’s never explained, and left me confused on that point.

There’s a huge drama at Megan’s place of work when the story begins–her professional reputation might be in tatters, and she may never be able to work in her chosen profession again. It appears that there was a very elaborate plot put into place against her, perhaps executed by a past boyfriend. When she does return home to finally fix the situation, it’s never explained how she managed to be framed in the first place–it seemed to be quite the accomplishment, and I really wanted to know how he did it!

Finally, the chemistry between the two was a bit meh. Sure, Megan loved Davy as a teen (which wasn’t during the time that he was touring and producing music–he was actually more of a celebrity for her parents’ generation than hers), but I had a hard time buying into their love in 2014. Megan was likable from the first, and easy to identify with–who can’t relate to having a huge celebrity crush?–but Davy was more of a challenge to warm up to. In the end the romance was tough to buy into. It was all very quick, and didn’t seem to have much of a foundation besides lust.

In a nutshell: promising, but doesn’t quite make it. C rating/ 3 stars.
