Excerpt:

He put the magazine between us, and when I moved forward to see it, he put his arm across the back of my chair. Now lots of guys did put their arms on chair backs, even Kirk did that with Rory, and he definitely wasn’t interested in her, but I couldn’t help but hope it meant something. I got this shivery feeling, and he asked if I was cold. I shook my head. I always got a feeling before something major was about to happen, and it has nothing to do with being cold, but I didn’t know why I got the feeling. Grandma used to do the same thing and always said, “Somebody just walked across my grave.” Somehow I didn’t think Brendon would understand if I told him I needed to move my future burial plot to a less high-traffic area.

“Are we still on for the art fair?” he asked.

I had only been circling it with hearts on my calendar since he asked.

“Sure, I think I’m still free,” I said.

We finished up our work, and he walked me out to meet Kylie.

“Okay, I’ll pick you up at three tomorrow,” he said, walking off.

“Can I ask a stupid question?” Kylie asked as soon as Brendon was out of earshot. “What’s he like? Because he’s so well-known, and I can’t imagine what it’d be like to grow up with your whole life under a microscope. I mean, my mom remembers his first birthday party pictures being shown on the news. And he’s hot, but he’s not like I-know-I’m-a-hottie hot, but more like a confident, ‘Yes, I am hot. Any questions?’ I mean, he has to have noticed there aren’t any guys who look like him walking around.”

“I should tell him what you said.”

“Don’t you dare,” Kylie said.

“I get what you mean—he’s grown up with everybody knowing his dad and watching him, but he’s pretty down to earth.”

“So what’s up with you two? You guys didn’t do any work last Saturday, and now you’re going to an art fair.”

“I dunno. He just asked me to go with him.”

“Asked you to go with him as his study buddy or asked you to go with him because he’s desperately in love with you?” she asked.

I said we were just friends, but she wouldn’t let it go.

“Okay, duh, obviously I like him, but let’s be honest. He’s out of my league. He’s out of most people’s league. It’s weird because normally if I like a guy then one of two things happens—either he likes me and asks for my number…or I find out he’s not into me and I cry in my pillow and listen to man-hating music for at least three days,” I said. “But this time’s different because he’s, I dunno, not just ‘some guy.’ I mean, I’m not putting up a shrine to him in my room, and I haven’t rooted though his garbage can, but I have as much chance of going out with him as Kirk does of getting an ‘A’ in this class.”

“You listen to man-hating music?” she asked, and I narrowed my eyes at her. “Whatever. Anyway, Em, he’s asked you out once already, and you are seeing him tomorrow. Plus, he’s always staring at you.”

I said he was probably just bored in class today, but she wouldn’t let it go.

“I’m not just talking about today. When we watched the movie on Monday, he watched you instead, and whenever I see you guys, he acts like there’s no one else in the room,” she said.

I couldn’t hold back the big, stupid smile spreading across my face. “He does? For real?”

She nodded. “You know, it’s weird. Here you were all upset you didn’t have a partner at the beginning of the semester, and then you ended up with like, Mr. Perfection, as your partner.”

the-hunt-teaser-1

Excerpt:

Suddenly, Kael sucked in a sharp breath. “You’re bleeding.” His fingers wrapped around her arm and jerked her toward him. She almost lost her footing, but his grip tightened and held her upright. “The dart—did it hit you?”

Cara looked at her arm. Just above Kael’s hand, a dark line of crimson bubbled up from a new gash splitting her flesh. Cara remembered a sharp pain while falling, but she didn’t feel it now. Actually, the skin around it was pleasantly warm, tingling even. Numb. Even Kael’s touch was becoming lost to her.

“Just a scratch,” she choked. The taste of smoldering ash and mint coated her tongue. She tried to swallow it, but stomach acid rose up and scalded the back of her throat.

“Cara, the poison…” Kael’s voice sounded far away.

Colors danced in front of her eyes until Kael was no longer standing there facing her. Her head lolled to the side, too heavy for her neck.

“Guards!” he called out, then turned back to Cara. “You pushed me out of the way!” He repeated it over and over. “Why? You pushed me…Why? Guards!”

She closed her eyes. She was tired all of a sudden. Very tired.

Was Kael still in the cell with her? She didn’t feel his fingers on her arm anymore.

The last thing she heard was her name whispered from Kael’s lips.

“Cara…”

About MIDNIGHT UNTAMED:

The mission was supposed to be simple. Infiltrate an enemy’s stronghold outside Rome and eliminate its leader. For a Breed warrior as lethal as Ettore Selvaggio, AKA “Savage”, stealth assassinations are only one of his many cold-hearted specialties. But the last thing Savage expects to find behind enemy lines—in his target’s bed—is a woman he once adored.

It’s been years since Savage last saw beautiful Arabella Genova. Years he’s strived to banish to his past, along with the fierce desire he once felt toward Bella . . . and the irresistible calling of her blood that stirs in him even now, despite the fact that she belongs to another male.

But when fate throws Savage and Bella together again in a race for their lives, will his long-lost love prove to be the one woman he can’t live without, or the perfect weapon to destroy him?

Excerpt:

Savage turned onto a narrow two-lane and headed for the Genova family vineyard even before Bella pointed to give him directions. He had been born in the same southern province of Italy, and, like her, he had spent the better part of his youth traipsing around the volcanic soil foothills of the region’s imposing Mount Vulture.

Unlike Bella, however, he had no family of his own. Whoever his parents were, they’d been gone from his life soon after he was born. Abandoned when he was just a baby, he’d been raised in one Darkhaven orphanage after another until he was old enough to take care of himself.

He thought he’d found something close to family when he met Bella’s brother, Consalvo, at university and the two became fast friends. He had regarded Sal like a brother, helped work the vineyard with the family as if it was his own.

For a long time, he had actually believed he’d found someplace to belong.

He had belonged…until his desire for Arabella had been found out and he’d been informed by her father that he was no longer welcome there.

Not good enough for his daughter.

Bella deserved something better.

Hell, Savage wouldn’t argue that, even now.

But as he glanced over at her and watched her lovely face turn ashen with dread on their approach to the long gravel drive that led to the homestead at the base of the mountain, he felt a wave of possessiveness—and protectiveness—he could not deny.

And he felt guilt too.

For leaving her the way he had, for letting her think he didn’t care.

For not being present to ensure that she never knew a moment of pain or heartache or fear.

All the things he could see playing across her features now.

Because of him.

She sucked in a sharp breath when she spotted the ominous-looking, empty black sedan parked halfway up the drive to the rambling villa. “Oh, no. Ettore, we’re too late.”

He clamped his molars tight, holding back the curse that leaped to his tongue. She was right. It didn’t look good.

Review:

A “wild” start to a fun new series!

In real life I can take or leave both the X Games and reality TV, but Ms. Yarros makes both of them seem like one heck of a ride with the Renegades! You couldn’t pay me enough to even consider doing a third of the stuff they’re doing (except for the cruise ship. I’d be all over that part of it, even the classes and tutoring portion) but I’d happily sit here and read another couple hundred pages of Pax, Landon, and Penna doing all of that crazy stuff 🙂

Fortunately, that’s going to be possible, seeing as it’s the first in the series and all 😉

Pax and Leah were a fun couple–she started out a bit on the stodgy side, but she definitely had her reasons. Pax did a great job of helping her figure out how to start living again, and she somehow kept him focused just enough on his classwork (even though there wasn’t a lot of page time devoted to them actually doing schoolwork, thank goodness) so that the cruise will (hopefully! That part isn’t quite guaranteed yet) continue for another adrenaline-filled semester.

Seriously. How can we sign up for this type of work study program? Do they have it for graduate students, by any chance? Maybe in the MLIS field? 😉

Knowing Pax had a secret was making me a little crazy–I’m not going to lie–and I didn’t have a clue what it was until it was revealed, though a few things from early on made a lot more sense once you knew the whole story. The saboteur, too, came as a total surprise–never in a million would I have suspected that person. There goes my idea for a future series book…but hopefully Ms. Yarros is all over that and has a much better HEA in mind for the person who isn’t getting one in the way I thought they might.

See? No spoilers here. 😉

If I had to make a complaint, it’s that we see far more of the story from Leah’s POV than Paxton’s–but yeah, really, that’s about it. Not that I didn’t love Leah, but…Paxton, ya know? 😉

Nova’s next–bring. It. On!

Hard To Serve - Tour Teaser 1

Excerpt:

So many readers asked for more stories in my bestselling Hard Ink series, and I’m so excited to be able to give you just that in my new, super sexy HARD TO SERVE! HARD TO SERVE is an edgy stand-alone love story about a Baltimore police detective whose red-hot BDSM relationship with a new submissive seems like the perfect distraction from a trumped-up investigation against him until he learns that the woman is his boss’s daughter. Talk about sparks flying! I had so much fun writing this book, and I can’t wait for everyone to read it! And if you enjoy it, you might like to check out the whole Hard Ink series, now complete! Happy reading!

Kyler pressed a kiss to Mia’s forehead. “You can trust me to take care of you.” Sitting back, his gaze swept down her face, enjoying the pleased expression she wore. From the promise of his words or the kiss? He laid his hand against her sternum and slowly slid his palm upward until his thumb and fingers separated around the base of her throat. He applied just the slightest amount of pressure there.

She sucked in a breath, and that one reaction surged blood into his cock. Mia squirmed, rocketing his arousal even further.

“Be still,” he gritted out.

She froze, her eyes on his.

“How important is the breath play to you?” Her eyes dilated, her expression read as needy, and her breathing quickened. Her obvious excitement went a long way toward answering the question. And these reaction were exactly what he loved about it. But did she need it?

“I don’t have to have it, but…” She looked down, her eyelashes fanning out against her skin.

“Look at me and finish that sentence,” he said, his voice full of grit. Because against his fingers, her pulse was flying.

“But it probably excites me more than anything else, and it gets me off faster than anything else,” she said, her cheeks turning beautifully pink.

“Does it now?” Not that he really needed to ask. His grip tightened, just a little.

“Yes, Sir,” she whispered, her voice breathy, full of desire.

“Say my name,” he said, wanting to hear it with all that arousal coloring her tone.

“Yes, Master Kyler.”

Fucking hell.

In a quick move, he slid his hand up her back and fisted her ponytail, tugging her head backward and her whole body closer. Hand still gripping her throat, he shifted them so that she was almost reclining, allowing him to look down into her face.

And he thought her pulse had been flying before.

“You like to be choked?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Choked to the point of not being able to breathe?”

“Yes, Sir.”

His grip tightened. “Gagged?”

“Yes. Sir,” she added, as if she’d momentarily forgotten protocol.

Jesus Christ, his cock was like fucking steel. “Asphyxiated to the point of passing out?” he asked, his gut twisting.

“I’ve never done that. The idea of it…” He nailed her with a stare, allowing her the time to gather the words the little furrow in her brow said she was looking for. “It both excites me and scares me, but I’m not sure which more.”

“Thank you for the honesty. I won’t go that far, Mia. I won’t put plastic over your head and I won’t duct tape your mouth. I also won’t use any bondage position that hangs you primarily by the throat or neck. If any of those are things you need, I won’t be able to give them to you,” he said, hoping like hell she didn’t need them. Occasionally, he had a moment of discomfort—maybe even cognitive dissonance—about the fact that he was both a cop and a Dom who got off on bondage and submission and spanking and even role-playing scenarios that flirted with non-consent. Because he’d seen the trauma real abuse caused. But what he did was safe, sane, and consensual, and he drew the line where any of those three might be compromised, which in his opinion included the edgier breath play.

A fast shake of her head. “No. I don’t want any of that. I just want—” Her eyes went wide.

“What, little one?” Satisfaction at her answer mixed with curiosity about what she’d not said. He needed to know.

Her throat worked under his hand in a hard swallow. “You.”

Review:

More Hard Ink? Yes, please! A start to a new series on top of that? Bring. It. On!

Our hero here is Kyler Vance, the Baltimore cop who’s been helping the Hard Ink guys in their fight against the Church gang and to clear their names after the disaster that was their last mission. The fight became personal for Kyler once his mentor/father’s former partner was killed by the gang…but since he himself was shot (in book 3, I think? Hard to Come By ?) Kyler’s been sidelined from his actual job and has been anxious to get back, especially once the Hard Ink mission was resolved.

As his novella begins, he discovers that he’s not only not returning to regular duty just yet, but he’s also part of an IA investigation–the new police commissioner is determined to get rid of the corruption in his new department, and he knows that there’s something off about Kyler’s cover story.

Obviously, he needs to work off quite a bit of steam…so a frustrated Kyler heads for the BDSM club he’s a partner in (Blasphemy) to try and get his mind off of the things he can’t change, at least for now. There he meets Mia–whose last name also happens to be Breslin, a fact he doesn’t find out until it’s much, much too late.

Poor guy.

Because if there’s one thing Kyler Vance isn’t looking for, it’s a relationship. But the connection he feels with the club’s newest sub? It’s intense. And yeah, it might actually have “relationship” written all over it. But getting him to admit it–and getting him over who her father is–that might take some doing.

But whoa, is it fun to read while he tries to figure it out! Have a cold drink–or two, or three–handy, though. Because, yeah. It’s pretty darn steamy.

Hard to Serve is #4.7 in the Hard Ink series, though out of any of them it might work okay as a standalone since its focus is mostly on Kyler and Mia and Blasphemy (the start to a new series, woot!), and their whole story is here. If you are going to read the rest of the Hard Ink series, however (and really, you should!), there are some mild spoilers, so you might want to wait and read them in their proper order.

The Sound of Us
by Julie Hammerle
Release Date: June 7th 2016
Entangled Teen

Summary:

Kiki Nichols might not survive music camp.

She’s put her TV-loving, nerdy self aside for one summer to prove she’s got what it takes: she can be cool enough to make friends, she can earn that music scholarship, and she can get into Krause University’s music program.

Except camp has rigid conduct rules—which means her thrilling late-night jam session with the hot drummer can’t happen again, even though they love all the same TV shows, and fifteen minutes making music with him meant more than every aria she’s ever sung.

But when someone starts snitching on rule breakers and getting them kicked out, music camp turns into survival of the fittest. If Kiki’s going to get that scholarship, her chance to make true friends—and her chance with the drummer guy—might cost her the future she wants more than anything.

Copy of TSoU12

Excerpt:

From the music app on my phone, Ani DiFranco belts out a choice insult just as Brie bursts through my dorm room door, crosses the room, and plops a giant cardboard box on the other bed.

“I guess we’re roommates,” she says. There were a bunch of boxes in the room when I arrived, and I wondered who they belonged to. I suppose that mystery is solved.

I scramble to stop Ani from singing anything else we both might regret later and I look up just in time to see Seth Banks crossing the threshold into my dorm room, carrying another larger, heavier box over to Brie’s side.

“Hi,” he says. “Kiki, right?” He knows my name. Seth Banks somehow knows my name.

I nod, and sneak a glance at the mirror on the wall next to my bed, assessing myself against the two model-caliber people in my dorm room. I’m still wearing the cat dress. My frizzy hair is up in a messy bun, but the effect actually works with my blue-plastic glasses. I look eccentric, but artsy, which may not be the best look of all time but it is, in fact, a look.

(You’re probably wondering who my celebrity twin is. Well, there aren’t a lot of women in pop culture who have my body type, i.e. dumpy. I’m too fat to be thin and too thin to be fat. Head-wise, I have the glasses and mouse-like features of Mary Katherine Gallagher from Saturday Night Live with hair like Hermione before someone gave her hot oil help between the second and third movies.)

Brie cocks an eyebrow at me and tucks her bottom lip under her top teeth as she picks up my backpack and drops it on the ground with a perfunctory thud. I had tossed it onto the blue papa-san chair in the middle of our room after I got back from the auditions. “That’s my chair,” she says. “My. Chair.” And then she proceeds to place a six-pack of Diet Coke into the fridge—My. Fridge.—because apparently that’s how fairness works.

Review:

It wasn’t quite what I expected, but I really liked this one!

Ms Hammerle’s writing style was a lot of fun to read–there were quite a few LOL moments, and I read more than a few of them out loud to Mini Moe #2 (whether she wanted me to or not–and she at least smiled at almost all of them, a good sign). Each chapter started with a tweet, which was entertaining, and Kiki’s total nerdom was endearing. Who can’t identify with someone who totally geeks out over a favorite tv show and celebrity?

It just about broke my heart that she was so determined to get the opera singing scholarship when she was sooo not suited for the profession, though. I guess I can understand why she was so focused on it, but man, did it take her forever to figure out what she really should be doing! Trying to figure out the rest of your life is hard for anyone, but to try to do it when you’re a teen (as our culture expects you to do)? Crazy. I’m glad I’m not back there anymore. But I digress…

I really identified with Kiki’s on-again-off-again-what do we have here anyway? relationship with Jack. I was in that relationship myself, when I was just a few years older. Unfortunately (well, probably fortunately, actually) mine didn’t have the same ending (or is it? I’m really hoping that this isn’t the last we see of Kiki and Jack!)

Come to think of it, if you take away the whole singing/songwriting/music theory genius aspect of Kiki’s life, we could have been separated at birth. Hmmm. Probably has a lot to do with my enjoyment of the book.

I’m definitely looking forward to more from this author, even if she doesn’t give us more Kiki.

Though I really hope she does. 🙂

New Release Review and Giveaway! DESIRE AFTER DARK by Marie Force (Gansett Island #15)

About the book:

Tobias “Slim” Jackson has the perfect life as a pilot on Gansett Island in the summer and in Florida in the winter. He’s happiest when he’s in the air, or at least that was the case before last summer when he met Erin Barton, Gansett Island’s newest lighthouse keeper. Now he can’t seem to find his usual enthusiasm for flying, winter in the sunny South or anything that doesn’t include her.

Erin has been stuck on pause since she lost her twin brother. She’ll tell you herself that her life has been a hot mess since Toby died. After dropping out of law school, she’s flitted from one pointless job to another, existing rather than truly living. Then she comes to Gansett Island to take over as the new lighthouse keeper and meets Slim, who happens to share her beloved brother’s first name. That small coincidence is enough to convince Erin that she needs to spend more time with the dashing pilot—except for the fact that he’s spending the winter more than a thousand miles from her.

Now Slim’s come home to Gansett for the holidays and to hopefully pick up where he left off with Erin. He’s got twelve days before he’s due back in Florida to finish out the remainder of his winter obligations. A lot can happen in twelve days, but will it be enough to convince Erin that it’s time to start truly living again? Read Slim and Erin’s story and catch up with the rest of the Gansett Island cast in Desire After Dark!

Excerpt:

“I think your guy is here,” Jenny said.

Erin was on the verge of reminding Jenny that he wasn’t her guy when Slim came into the kitchen and made a liar out of her. Her heart nearly leapt from her chest at the sight of his handsome, smiling face as well as the windblown hair and the rugged leather jacket he wore. He was like a fantasy come to life, and his dark eyes drank her in.

“Is that Alex calling me?” Jenny asked, scooting from the kitchen to give them a moment alone.

“She’s nothing if not subtle,” he said.

“Always has been her strong suit.”

He came over to her, making her entire body go haywire in reaction to his nearness. What. The. Hell.

Unsure of what he expected, she looked up at him, trying to anticipate his next move. But when he merely hugged her, she sagged against him, breathing in the bewitching scent of man and leather and soap.

“Missed you,” he whispered, close enough to her ear to set off another series of unprecedented responses that converged in an insistent throb of desire between her legs.

Dear God. What was it about this man? How did he reduce her to a quivering pile of want simply by walking into a room and hugging her?

When she came up for air, she realized her arms were inside his coat and wrapped around his waist. If this was how she reacted when he was gone for a few hours, how would she feel when he left again to resume his winter life in Florida? She didn’t want to think about that, especially not while he was standing right in front of her, sizing her up with those sexy dark eyes that saw her a little too well for her liking.

“Did you miss me?”

“Did you go somewhere?”

His eyes glimmered with amusement, his smile transforming his face from handsome to ridiculously sexy. “You hurt me with your nonchalance.”

“Yes, I missed you. Feel better now?”

“I’ve never felt better in my life.”

Never?” she asked, relying on humor to hide her emotional reaction to his heartfelt words.

“Not that I can recall.”

With his fingers on her chin, he tipped her face up for a soft, sweet kiss that left her dizzy and dying for more.

“To be continued,” he said, releasing her.

Review:

A sweet romance and emotional read–this isn’t my first Marie Force book, but it is my first from the The McCarthys of Gansett Island series. Book 15 probably isn’t the one to start with–I’m pretty sure every single H/h from the series shows up here, multiple times–but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless, even if I did feel a little lost occasionally.

I loved Slim, even though his nickname is a bit odd. (Is it just me, or does “Slim” just scream “cowboy”?) He’s pretty much a dream guy–romantic, understanding, patient, gorgeous, and a pilot–seriously, if he had any flaws besides eternal bachelor (which was pretty much a thing of the past when the book started, though he hadn’t admitted it yet) I’ve completely forgotten them. I’m pretty sure if you looked up a definition for “sigh-worthy” you’d find his picture.

Erin, on the other hand, has issues. And then her issues have their own issues. I’m not saying they’re not justified, because they pretty much are, but whoa. I spent a lot of time urging her to “just tell him already!” (that she’s afraid of flying after her brother died in 9/11–she lives on an island and pilot BF Slim wants to fly her to lots of different places) before she finally did…when she absolutely had to. But still. She did work through a lot of her issues by the story’s end–though not the OCD, I don’t think–and it was rewarding seeing her finally embracing life (and Slim, LOL) more by the end.

There was a whole lot of scenes/side storylines from characters’ POVs that weren’t Erin or Slim–if I had to guess, I’d say about 1/4 to 1/3 of the book deals with past series characters. Though they added a lot to the story, I did feel a bit behind the times (not to mention slightly overwhelmed, trying to keep everyone straight!) because I didn’t already know these people and know them well. I can imagine that people who’ve read most or all of the rest of the series will love these parts. I will admit that at least one of them had me tearing up, but there were times that I just wanted to get back to Slim and Erin already. My fault, though, for starting with book 15. Boy, do I have a lot of catching up to do! 🙂

New Release and Giveaway! CHEERLEADING CAN BE MURDER by Carissa Ann Lynch

Cheerleading can be Murder tour banner

Cheerleading Can Be Murder
by Carissa Ann Lynch
Release Date: April 5th 2016
Limitless Publishing

Synopsis:

Getting on the cheerleading squad is hard enough without a psycho on the loose…

For Harrow High freshman Dakota Densford, life should be easy. All she has to worry about is talking to cute boys and remembering her locker combination. But when cheerleading tryouts draw near, she learns the cards are stacked against her—spots on the varsity team are limited. Dakota faces her competition head-on, but when her life is threatened, that takes the competition to a whole new level.

High school is never easy, and freshman year is off to a rough start…

Between Dakota’s uniform being ripped up and masked vandals trashing another girl’s house, everyone is suspect. To complicate matters further, Dakota has a thing for Andy McGraw, but she finds him locking lips with another girl.

The harassment continues, and when Dakota finds suspicious flyers inside her best friend’s locker, she doesn’t know what to think. The principal’s unfeeling, overachiever daughter, Brittani Barlow, will do anything to secure her place on the team. But Dakota’s neighbor, on the other hand, definitely fits the profile of a sociopath.

Cheerleading has become a game of life or death.

Excerpt:

Prologue

The Sociopath

Do you want to know what death smells like? What it really smells like?

Take a pound of raw meat—I recommend ground chuck. Stick it in a vacuum-sealed container. Place the container in the fridge and leave it there. A few months later, take it out.

Remove the lid.

Nothing can prepare you for the brick wall that smacks your face, filling every orifice of your body simultaneously.

That smell…not only will it blow you away, but smells like that, they stick with you.

Lifeless meat in a tight, confined space produces a smell sharp enough to burn the lashes off your eyelids.

So, for the rest of the day you’ll be moving along…and then some small thing reminds you— little Tommy’s Happy Meal or a dump truck rolling by on garbage day—and your nose twitches, remembers, and the hairs inside your nostrils stiffen. Your throat tickles in the back, bile rising, and your belly rolls uncomfortably. You try to push the thought aside, to forget that smell, but…you can’t.

Like I said, smells stick with you. Even months—maybe years—later, you’ll be walking along, minding your own business, when something—anything, really—reminds you of that smell.

I know what death smells like…

The house is empty, silent. The quiet consumes me, a welcoming blanket…a sign that it’s finally time.

The mini-fridge was my grandma’s idea. A teenager now, she thought I deserved my own little space for drinks and snacks.

I squatted down in front of it, listening to its hum. My heart pumped, excitement building.

Today was the day.

It’d been nearly six months now since I started my little “experiment.” I’d kept a journal, taking notes on my observations regarding the specimen. A disciplined endeavor.

I’d done a lot of monitoring, but today was the day to really observe, up close and personal.

I opened the fridge, enjoying the sticky “smooch” sound of the rubber seals on each side separating. A couple cans of soda sat on the top shelf. Generic cola, probably expired. On the bottom was my Tupperware container, its red cap securely fastened in place. Keeping all the smells inside…

Carefully, I slid the container off the shelf, carrying it to the center of my bedroom floor, tiptoeing like a gymnast on a balance beam. I plopped on my belly, burning my bare knees across the carpet. I pressed my face to the plastic, looking inside like it was a tiny window. I made a funny face, pressing my lips to the side and blowing, exposing my teeth.

Two eyes, wide and frozenly frightened, stared back at me through the plastic container. The eyeballs mushy now, there were tiny bits and pieces of egg-white eyeball chunks floating in the fluids surrounding its face. The once shiny black coat faded now to a murky brown color.

Excitedly, I lifted the lid. Taking in the smells of death. “Meow.” I grinned at my stinky friend.

It was a smell I’d never forget…hopefully.

About the Author:carissa ann lynch

Besides my family, my greatest love in life is books. Reading them, writing them, holding them, smelling them…well, you get the idea. I’ve always loved to read and never considered myself a “writer” until a few years ago when I couldn’t find a book to read and decided to try writing my own story. With a background in psychology, I’ve always been a little obsessed with the darker areas of the mind and social problems so I try to channel all of that into my writing.  I’m the author of the Flocksdale Files trilogy, the Horror High series, Grayson’s Ridge, and This Is Not About Love. I reside in Floyds Knobs, Indiana with my husband, children, and massive collection of books.
