It’s beginning to look a lot like love . . .

As her thirtieth birthday approaches, deputy Jill Flaherty decides it’s time to live a little. When she walks into Sawyer Anderson’s bar in her sexiest dress, she’s not thinking that he’s her brother’s best friend or about the many women he dated during his years as a pro hockey player. All she’s thinking is that it’s finally time to confess to her longtime crush how she truly feels.

Sawyer is done being a player on and off the ice. Yet no one in the small town of Christmas seems to believe he’s ready to settle down, not Jill, and certainly not Jack, who is determined to keep Sawyer from breaking his little sister’s heart. But as Sawyer and Jill’s relationship heats up, can he prove that he’s her happy ever after?

Review:

Where to start? So much was going on in this one…at times, a little too much. Talk about having to go through the wringer to get to your HEA–Jill and Sawyer definitely earned it, that’s for sure!

I picked this one up because of two things: 1) Sawyer’s an ex-NHL player and 2) best friend’s little sister troupe. Hockey players are my catnip, and I love the angst that BFLS stories can bring. On the second, this story did not disappoint, though that part of the conflict was resolved fairly early in the story and gave way for a whole lot of other angsty stuff. Maybe a bit too much? I’m still not sure how I feel about some of the directions this story went in.

On the hockey front, I did really like the scene early on where Jill was strong-armed into playing in the championship game against Sawyer and Jack’s team. I’m not sure it’s really plausible to do so well in your first game ever, but it was entertaining nonetheless.

I also loved Sawyer’s sabotaging of Jill’s dates. Very amusing…unless you’re Jill, of course. 😉

Some of the other plot diversions? Birth control mishaps, nursing home mysteries, ex-husband drama, former relationship angst, kidnapping, shoot-outs, predatory coworkers…the list goes on and on. I was starting to wonder what wasn’t going to happen to these two before we got to “the end”!

Not having read the rest of the series, having so many secondary characters involved in/invested in the story’s outcome did get a bit overwhelming at times. It was easy to keep track of Jack and Grace (Jill’s brother/SIL) and Brandi and Trent (Sawyer’s coworker and her son) but everyone else tended to blend together and leave me with a feeling of “now who is this person again…?” for at least a paragraph or two each time they show up. For series regulars, though, I have a feeling this story will be right up their alley–everyone’s in it, and it seems to wrap everything up nicely.

I enjoyed the HEA, and was beyond glad when we finally got to that point. It felt like a long and rambling journey at times, but ultimately all’s well that ends well, right?

It’s always been you…

Actress Chloe O’Connor has become America’s sweetheart, but back in little Christmas, Colorado, she’s still remembered as a shy, awkward schoolgirl. And there’s no one she dreads (and secretly wants) to see more than her high school crush, Easton McBride. Just one look from the former star quarterback and it’s like she’s instantly transformed from daytime drama queen to tongue-tied teenager. She’s kissed Hollywood actors and famous cover models, so she can certainly play it cool while turning up the heat, right?

After an injury ended his military career, Easton McBride built a good life in the rugged countryside of his hometown. And the last thing he needs is his quiet solitude shattered by a high-maintenance temptress who isn’t anything like the sweet Chloe he misses. While he enjoys the flirtation with this new bold and beautiful woman, he can’t help but wonder whether a kiss could have the power to bring back the small-town girl he’s grown to love.

“Yeah, I can see that. Just wondering if it’s the guys buzzing around your girl like she’s a honey pot or your pink house setting you off,” Chance said.

“She’s not my . . . What do they think they’re doing? Do you see that?  They stole those flowers they’re giving her from my window boxes.”

He didn’t wait for his brother’s response. Though he doubted Chance could make one since he was laughing again. Easton strode in Chloe’s direction, the gravel kicking up dust under his boots.

One of the four men hanging around her chair looked up and said something to her. She leaned forward with a wide, welcoming smile. “Surprise!”

Now how was he supposed to stay mad at her when she was looking at him with excited anticipation on her gorgeous face?  Easy, he told himself, she’d painted his house pink and threw out his furniture and appliances without consulting him. And she’d spent what must have been a crapload of money remodeling a place he planned to tear down. All because he’d lied to her. And if he told her the truth now, she’d be humiliated and hurt.

She looked away and said something to the men. They walked off, but not before a couple of them shot him warning glances. Chloe unhooked her umbrella from the back of the chair and stood up, smoothing a hand down her body-hugging dress. As she walked toward him, she searched his face with a nervous look on hers. “You’re mad at me. You hate it, don’t you?”

He shoved his hands in the front pockets of his jeans. “No, just a little surprised.” He glanced at the cabin. “It’s kind of . . .  girly.”

“But you said you liked pink.” She looked up at him through her long lashes, and her shoulders sagged. “You were being sarcastic. Cat says I’m not very good at picking up on sarcasm.” She caught her bottom lip between her teeth and glanced over her shoulder. “I guess I could ask them to repaint it.”

“Jesus, no, don’t do that. I’ll get used to it.” He only had to live with it for another couple of months.

A look of relief spread across her face. “They’ve all worked so hard today, I’d hate to ask them to stay longer.”

“You wanna tell me why you’re talking with a Southern accent?”

Her cheeks pinked. “I pick up accents easily. The foreman’s originally from Savannah.”

So that explained the British accent. She spent too much time with Dame Alexander.

“Chloe, honey,” his brother said, coming up beside him. “You completely transformed the place.”

“You like it?” she asked with a hopeful smile.

“Are you kidding me? It’s amazing. Suits my brother to a tee. He secretly loves pink, you know.”

Easton shot his brother a look. If Chloe was a color, she’d be pink.

Surviving the holidays will take a Christmas miracle . . .

Ex-cop Cat O’Connor is bored working for her sister, Chloe, as a personal assistant on the set of her soap opera. Until Chloe gets an opportunity to audition for the role of a lifetime and asks her identical twin to substitute for her on the soap with no one the wiser. It’s a perfect switch-until Cat attracts the attention of the mysterious Mr. Tall, Dark, and Way-too-handsome leading man.

Grayson Alexander never thought being snowbound in the charming town of Christmas, Colorado, for the holiday would get so hot. But between working with sexy, tough Cat on set and keeping his real reason for being there under wraps, he’s definitely feeling the heat. And if there’s one thing they’ll learn as they bring out the mistletoe, it’s that in this town, true love is always in season.

 Excerpt-Banner

Chloe narrowed her eyes at Cat. “You’re acting like a cop. All tense, looking around as if someone’s going to leap out at us at any moment.”

That was the thing about Chloe. She acted like an airhead, but she wasn’t. She was smart. She read body language almost as well as Cat. “I told you to stop watching Criminal Minds before you go to bed. It makes you jumpy the next day.”

Cat focused on relaxing the muscles in her neck and shoulders as she rounded the corner to . . . Chloe’s dressing room door was ajar.

“I’m not jumpy . . . What are–”

“Quiet,” Cat whispered, her forearm across Chloe’s chest as she gently shoved her against the wall. “Stay here.” She went to reach for her gun, then decided to check out the situation first. If she could avoid drawing her weapon, so much the better. She didn’t have a permit to carry concealed in California, and Chloe would wonder why she was armed.

Cat crept toward her sister’s dressing room and slowly inched the door open. A tall man, his dark wavy hair curling at the collar of his expensive black suit, stood beside the coffee table with his back to her.

“Take one more step toward me, Cat, and I’ll shoot you,” he said in a smooth baritone.

When he moved his arm as though to reach for something in his jacket, Cat launched herself across the room and took him down. His well-developed muscles rippled beneath her fingers as she pushed her hands into the wide expanse of his back.

He fell forward, his forehead bouncing off the arm of the club chair at the same time a cat, its white hair standing on end, hissed and flew at her. Startled, Cat jerked back, raising an arm to push the animal away. The thought that the man might have been threatening the cat, and not her, crossed her mind. But it didn’t explain why he’d broken into her sister’s dressing room.
