All or Nothing At All
JENNIFER PROBST

“Probst’s final book in her Billionaire Builders Series is a gut-wrenching, intensely emotional, second-chance romance. The fast-paced dialogue vividly details every emotive scene…The stars and little girl costar are unforgettable, and the series tie-up is exceptional.”

Review:

This was a tough one to rate. Since the first book in the series, it was pretty clear to the reader that there was something between Tristan and Sydney, and it didn’t take too much mental gymnastics to make the leap to figuring out what Syd’s big secret probably was. Second chance romance can make for a really delicious read, so I was really looking forward to this one.

The first 40% of the book was everything I could have hoped for–angsty, delicious second chance-ness and all. Once Syd’s secret comes out, though, it was hard to get behind the all of choices and decisions that both Syd and Tristan make and demand. The fact that they both work so hard to keep Becca happy is a saving grace, but at times this book was hard to read. I was determined to get to their HEA, though, and kept going. Seeing the couples from the other books (Tristan’s brothers and their coworker) helped to make things better, even at the darkest moments.

So…I ended with mixed feelings on this one. There were parts I liked and parts that made me a little crazy. In the end, though, I really did like Tristan and Syd even if I didn’t agree with everything they did, and was happy to see them end up at a HEA with Becca. It was great to see all the “billionaire builders” get happy endings, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Ms. Probst has in store for us next.

Chapter 1

Parks

“This is gonna be wicked.” I smiled and glanced over at my closest friend, Jackson. “You sure you’re up for this shit tonight?”

He snorted and reached up to brush his hand by his nose. The cockiness in his eyes was almost too much, but it mirrored mine – no doubt.

“I just hope these other guys you’re bringing from the hospital don’t mess up the flow.” He glanced my way and smirked. “You do remember how to do this, right?”

“Pick up a woman?” I chuckled and nodded at the bouncer at the front of the strip club. “It’s what I do when I’m not saving lives. It’s you who might need dusting off.”

“Not a chance, asshole.” He popped me in the chest with the back of his hand and made a beeline for the bar.

I stopped and glanced around the darkened room, the lights perfect for the clientele littered all over the club. Sexy jazz music pumped from the speakers above, and the fog machine was in full effect.

“Over here, man.” Freddy, one of my favorite residents from St. Marks waved me over. “We saved you a seat and got you a present.”

I rolled my eyes as he extended his hand, his thick finger wrapped around a bundle of one dollar bills. “You think the type of woman I plan on fucking in the bathroom tonight is going to be impressed with such small bills?”

“Oh Gawd.” Darek, one of the surgeons I worked with gave me a look. “Please tell me you’re kidding. Do you know how many germs there are in a bathroom?”

I snatched up the bills and grabbed a beer from the bucket of them in the center of the table. “I’ll make sure to sanitize my cock before and after. Sound good?”

The table erupted in laughter, and the tension in my chest released. I was with friends for the night, and I was, without a doubt, getting laid by a woman who knew her way around a man.

“Where’s Aiden?” I glanced back toward the bar to see Jackson flirting with the bartender. He always had to go after the most challenging lay in the room. It was almost a game to him.

“You know Elizabeth isn’t going to let him come to a titty bar.” Freddy reached over and gripped the back of my shoulder, squeezing tightly as he leaned closer and whispered. “He’ll stop by on his way home. Just don’t tell on him.”

I shook my head. “I don’t know why he settled down.”

“Have you seen Elizabeth?”

“Yeah, she’s beautiful, but still.” I took a long drink of my beer. “Complete ball and chain. Not worth the effort.”

“You don’t think anyone is worth the effort.” Darek glanced over his shoulder and smiled. “Now, get up front. We all made a pact on who you would pick tonight.”

“You’ve already seen the girls?” I turned back to my friends and smiled.

“Nope, but you’ve got a type.” Freddy moved around me to extend his hand to Jackson. My best friend was the only one of my friends not in the medical field. “Hey, Jackson. What you know, man?”

“I don’t have a type.” I took another sip of my beer and turned to see my mentor, Aiden Crawford walk through the door of the club.

“Sure you do.” Darek smiled. “She’s gotta be alive and has more plastic than a bottling company.”

“Fuck you too.” I flipped him off and walked toward Aiden.

He nodded toward my lifted hand. “That for me?”

I smiled. “You’re not that lucky.” I extended my hand toward him. “You bring Lizzy with you?”

He chuckled. “No, and I’m not staying. I just wanted to stop by and tell you that I’m here if you need me.”

“Here? Like at the titty bar? It doesn’t really fit your style, old man.”

He gripped my hand tightly as a smirk played at the corner of his mouth. “Make me proud at Boston Gen, okay? Do what you need to do and come back home.”

I shook his hand and nodded. “I feel like I’m about blast the fuck off into space. Do I need to give a short speech or anything?”

“No, you cocky bastard.” He released my hand and patted my chest as his eyes darkened a little. There was no one I respected more than Aiden. He was a god in the operating room and was brilliant with technique and precise with his skill. Everyone at St. Mark’s wanted to be Aiden Crawford – even me.

And I would. One day.

“Anything else?” I gripped his forearm as he wrapped his fingers around the side of my neck as he had a hundred times. The man was like an older brother to me. I wanted his approval, and I had it.

“Yes. Don’t fuck with my sister. She’s been through a lot, and she’s just the kind of woman that would excite a sick fuck like you.” He squeezed the side of my neck, leaving me a little uncomfortable. “Support her. Teach and train her staff, but don’t you dare touch her.”

“Dude. Your sister is old like you, right? I’m into younger women. They’re pliable. You guys are stuck in your ways, and if we’re being honest,” I leaned closer and smiled like a tomcat. “Boooooring.”

He smiled and released me, patting me on the chest again. “I’m serious. She and Gwen are all I have left in the world for family. Don’t do something you’ll regret.”

I held up a boy scout sign, hoping I was getting the damn thing right. “On scout’s honor.”

“That doesn’t work unless you were a scout, idiot.” He moved to the side a little and waved at the guys at the table before turning back to me. “Be on time. Be precise. Show them what we’ve trained you to be at St. Marks. No fucking around with the nurses like you do here.”

“Alright, Dad. I think I got it.” I winked and crossed my arms over my chest. “Tell Lizzy I said hey.”

“Not a chance.” He gave me one more stern look and turned to walk out, calling over his shoulder, “I’m here if you need anything. Just a call away.”

I stood there for a minute, taking in his advice, his warning, and his offer. I wouldn’t mess with his sisters, either one of them. He meant too much to me, and I’d been honest about not liking older women. They were too fucking bossy or insanely confident. I wasn’t interested in either.

Sluts were the name of the game. Easy in and out. No commitment and no chance of getting my balls, my wallet and my heart pulled through a ringer.

“That go well?” Jackson moved up beside me, his eyes locked on the door where Aiden had left moments before.

“Yep. He said to stay away from his sister.” I smiled over at him. “Some part of me wants her even more now.”

He laughed and wrapped his arm around my shoulders, turning us and walked us back toward the guys as the first girl made her way out on stage. “Have you seen this broad?”

“Nope.” I pulled away from him and moved up to the stage, smiling up at the platinum blond as I pulled out a one dollar bill and waved it in the air. “And I don’t need to see her. I’m going for the young, dumb, insecure ones.”

“Cause they make you feel better about yourself?” He lifted his hand with a hundred dollar bill clasped between his fingers.

Asshole. Always trying to show someone up.

The girl snatched my bill and moved over to him and tugged his from his fingers slowly, seductively. She knelt down in front of Jackson and smiled, her tits spilling out of the tiny blue bikini-like top she had on. “Want a lap dance, baby?”

I snorted. “You just gotta be first, don’t you?”

He glanced at me and winked. “You gotta up the ante sometimes, Parks. Shit or get off the pot, right? You’re not going to land this older woman with little boy tricks.”

“I don’t wanna land her. I want a slut, like this girl.” I nodded toward the girl as my mood darkened. Jackson had no room to talk about growing up. He was a playboy billionaire that still fucked a different girl each night, and most of them in his high dollar office with the world watching from the windows.

He turned back to the girl and pulled out another hundred. “Two hundred for a quick fuck for my friend here?”

“Absolutely.” She snatched the money and jumped off the stage, grabbing my hand and tugging me back toward the darkest part of the club.

I gripped her hand tightly and jerked, pulling her back and wrapping an arm around her to steady her. “I don’t need you taking the lead, princess.”

“Then you take it,” she whispered and ran her hand down my chest to cup my dick. Her dark red fingernails matched her lipstick and should have been a turn on, but it wasn’t.

“I just did.” I leaned down and pressed my lips to hers, dominating the kiss as she melted against me. My eyes fluttered closed, and I imagined her to be someone worthy of my time and attention, the kind of woman I would give up my wanton bullshit for. I had no doubt that girl existed somewhere, but I was unwilling to go in search of her. She’d have to exist somewhere in the recess of my mind.

“Let’s go to the back.” She nipped at my lips, her blue eyes filled with lust.

“No. Let’s fuck here.” I dropped down in a chair close to the edge of the stage and reached for my zipper. “Make it look like a lap dance, and I’ll throw in an extra hundred. Make me come before you do, and I’ll throw in five hundred.”

She laughed and looked around as if I were kidding. “Really? Right here?”

“You’re a slut. You’re used to a crowd watching you get off.” I pulled a condom from my pocket and bit the edge of the packaging. “It’s a big dick though. You’re going to have to work hard to hide it firstly, and not soak it too quickly. You down?”

I pulled the rubber out and slipped my hand into my slacks to grab my cock. My erection had nothing to do with her, and everything to do with the thrill of an exhibition. My job was the only thing that left my blood really pumping as of late, so fucking in public seemed rather appetizing.

“Fine. You’re on.” She turned and rolled her hips, moving to stand in front of me as I pulled my dick out and slid the rubber down it. It was just dark enough, and there was far too much going on up on the stage for anyone to pay us much attention at all.

“You’re going down, baby.” I reached up and gripped her hips as she leaned forward and dug her fake nails into my thighs. She wrapped her hand around my cock and tugged her panties to the side with her free hand.

I leaned back and held on tightly as she let out a long yelp as she slid down my thick shaft. “You’re so big. I’m not sure I can-”

“Hush. Save your breath for pants and moans.” I lifted my hips and filled her loose slit with the rest of my cock before patting the side of her ass once I hit home. “Get busy. You know the rules.”

She lifted up and slammed back down, dancing and rolling her hips as she fucked herself good. I reached up and cupped my hands behind my head, watching her until I grew bored. I glanced over at the table to find my friends watching me with confused looks.

Freddy tilted his head to the side and gave me a look. He mouthed, ‘Is she fucking you?’

I smiled and shrugged. I wasn’t the kiss and tell type.

“Don’t stop.” I gripped a cheek of her thick ass and lifted my hips as she hovered above me, shaking a little and panting loudly.

“Just a minute. I’m so close. I don’t want to lose.”

“Sorry, but I have people waiting on me.” I pulled her back down and rolled my hips as she exploded, convulsing and jerking above me.

I reached around to grab one of her tits and pumped my hips a few times, forcing myself to release just to take the edge off a little.

Life was about to change drastically, and even if I played it off well in front of everyone else, I was fucked up on the inside.

I’d been in New York my whole goddamn life. What in the world did Boston have to offer?

Excerpt:

“I want this.” Mia lifted her face to his as a cloud scudded across the moon. “I want you.”

Even if it could only be for tonight, she was Mia, not a mom, not a sister, and not a wife who’d been tossed aside for someone younger and curvier. For this one moment, she didn’t have any responsibilities except what she wanted and needed.

I want you, too.” Nick took her hand and led her toward the car. “A part of me has wanted you since I was fifteen and you hung out at the town beach in that green bikini with the white flowers.”

Her heart lurched. He’d noticed her enough to remember the bikini she’d hidden from her mom. The one she’d bought because she’d heard Nick say he liked green. “You were always with the guys by the life guard station.” Everything about him was a lot sexy and a little bit dangerous.

“I wanted to see you.” His smile was forced, like the admission cost him more than he wanted her to know.

Mia curved her cold hand into his warm one. She’d guessed she’d hurt him the one time they’d gone out, but until tonight she hadn’t understood how much. She couldn’t regret the past, and she couldn’t predict the future, but she could do something about the present. “I want to be with you. Even though we’re not teenagers anymore and I don’t have that green bikini.

Nick’s gaze skimmed her body from head to toe and lingered at her breasts. Then he gave her a grin that was pure bad boy. “I was always a lot more interested in what was underneath that bikini anyway.”

He opened the passenger door for her to slide in.

She looked at him from under her lashes and flirted like she’d wanted to do all those years ago but had been too shy. “You were, were you?”

“Oh yeah.” He shut the car door and, in the sudden silence, panic rolled over her again. Except, there was excitement too…

New Release Review! ON SECOND THOUGHT by Kristan Higgins

On Second Thought

by Kristan Higgins

Synopsis:

Ainsley O’Leary is so ready to get married—she’s even found the engagement ring her boyfriend has stashed away. What she doesn’t anticipate is being blindsided by a breakup he chronicles in a blog…which (of course) goes viral. Devastated and humiliated, Ainsley turns to her older half sister, Kate, who’s struggling with a sudden loss of her own.

Kate’s always been the poised, self-assured sister, but becoming a newlywed—and a widow—in the space of four months overwhelms her. Though the sisters were never close, she starts to confide in Ainsley, especially when she learns her late husband was keeping a secret from her.

Despite the murky blended-family dynamic that’s always separated them, Ainsley’s and Kate’s heartaches bind their summer together when they come to terms with the inevitable imperfection of relationships and family—and the possibility of one day finding love again.

Review:

So, so good!

I was slightly worried, for about a milisecond, that Kristan Higgins was going to use my widow plot point pet peeve, but I should have known better. This is Kristan Higgins. It’s her second widow story (sorry, Leo, I’m not counting you here since we didn’t hear your story from your POV) and yep, she knows her stuff and how to do widows right.

So, so good. Wait, did I say that already? 😉

Like her previous book (), On Second Thought is the story of two sisters, and the audiobook version once again uses two different narrators to tell their story–I love this trend! (Though when listening in the car, Kate’s parts had to be turned way, way up. With headphones, however, everything was fine at the same volume. Weird.) Mini Moe #2 and I started listening to this one in the car, driving to and from our family vacation, and had so much fun while not listening speculating about what was coming for the characters. I totally called both the HEAs for Kate and Ainsley–go, me!–but couldn’t have even began to guess how much awesomeness (a impossible yet probable mixture of crises, awkwardness, embarrassment, sadness, and joy) Ms. Higgins was going to bring to the two of them while on their journey.

So. Much. Awesomeness.

We’re back in Cambry-on-Hudson again, and it was nice to see glimpses of Jenny and Leo from time to time here. There was a mention of Rachel, but we don’t actually get to see her. You definitely don’t need to have read If You Only Knew to enjoy On Second Thought, though if you have, you’ll especially appreciate seeing Leo at Kate’s grief group. (And yeah, you’ll probably want to find out the rest of his story as well; consider yourself warned!)

As always, relationships are the focus here, and nobody does them like Kristan Higgins–those of family and friends as well as romantic ones. Kate and Ainsley’s relationship is even more of a focus of the book than their romances, actually. Don’t worry, though–the romances are plenty swoony too. And that epilogue? OMG, I was all but sobbing as I read. So, so good.

Write faster, Kristan! I need more of your books, pronto 😉

EXCERPT:

“So what’s Hannah like?” Tess sank into the chair next to him. Dan refrained from telling her to go to bed. For once she wanted to talk—he’d spend all night with her if necessary.

“She’s nice. Funny and smart, too.”

Tess winced. “Sounds great.” Her tone implied anything but.

Dan nudged her. “Trust me, she is. I didn’t think you’d want to hear other kinds of stuff.”

“Eww, no. Where’d you guys go?”

“I took her to the planetarium, and afterward, to Isabella’s.”

Tess sat up straight. “You took her there? I thought you were joking!”

“What? She liked it.” “Really? Or was she just pretending?” He paused and considered Hannah’s reaction. It hadn’t seemed fake. He’d been careful not to overload her with too much geek data, which might fascinate him but bore others. No, he was sure she’d liked it.

“Her eyes didn’t glaze over, and she pulled me along to show me things she thought were interesting. So I’d have to say really.”

“Weird. Are you going to see her again?”

This was worse than he expected, as he tried to keep from squirming in his seat under Tess’ direct gaze. “I hope so.”

“When do I get to meet her?” “You’ve met her, Tess. At the JCC concert.”

“I know, Dad, but when do I get to really meet her? If you like her enough to go out with her so often, I should at least get to know her better. Invite her over for dinner.”

He glanced at his watch. “Shouldn’t you be…in bed or something?” He regretted his eagerness to talk to her. Well, that was his feeling lots of times as the father of a teenager, but this time she was talking about Hannah. And for some reason, she made him feel like his mother was interrogating him, rather than his daughter. He needed to regain the upper hand. Somehow. “Dinner’s a good idea, Tess. Just not right now.”

“Why not? You’re a good cook. Everyone has to eat. You can invite her here, impress her with your culinary skills, and she and I can get to know each other better. What’s the problem?”

The idea had so many problems her compliment didn’t hit him until after.

“Thanks,” he said.

“For what?”

“For telling me I’m a good cook.”

“You’re welcome. But changing the subject won’t work.”

Damn. He ran a hand through his hair and remembered he needed a haircut. Turning in his seat, he grabbed his phone and added it to tomorrow’s to-do list. “Tess, I think it’s too soon in our relationship for this to happen.”

“Too soon? What’s too soon about it? You’ve been dating a couple of weeks, right?”

“Ten days.” Was it only ten days? “You have a daughter.”

He nodded.

“So, it’ll look weird if you keep me hidden away, like Mr. Rochester’s wife.”

“Oh, a literary reference,” he said. “Nice touch.”

She grinned. “I thought you’d appreciate it. As my reward, I think you should listen to me. I could always come with you somewhere if you don’t want her at the apartment.”

Letting out a sigh, he faced her. “Like a chaperone? Oh, sounds fun. Come here.”

She stood and he pulled her into a hug. “I’ll think about it. I’m glad you’re okay with the idea of me dating.”

Tess shrugged. “I don’t know. I mean, Hannah seems nice, but do you have time to date? You always tell me how busy you are.”

He pulled her into another hug. “No matter what I do, I’ll always have time for you. I promise.”

Author Bio:

When I was a little girl and couldn’t fall asleep, my mother would tell me to make up a story. Pretty soon, my head was filled with these stories and the characters that populated them. Each character had a specific personality, a list of likes and dislikes, and sometimes, even a specific accent or dialect. Even as an adult, I think about the characters and stories at night before I fall asleep, or in the car on my way to or from one of my daughters’ numerous activities (hey, anything that will drown out their music is a good thing).

One day, I started writing them down (it was either that or checking into the local mental hospital—the computer was way less scary) and now I’m a published author. My first book, A Heart of Little Faith, was just declared a Finalist in the Fiction: Romance category of the 2016 Best Book Awards.

In the real world, I’m the mother of two amazing daughters and wife of one of the smartest men I know. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, reading, traveling and watching TV. In between chauffeuring my daughters to after-school activities that require an Excel spreadsheet to be kept straight, I run youth group activities, train the dog we recently adopted from a local shelter, and cook dinners that fit the needs of four very different appetites. I also write freelance articles for magazines, newspapers, and edit newsletters.

When all of that gets overwhelming, I retreat to my computer, where I write stories that let me escape from reality. In my made-up world, the heroines are always smart, sassy and independent. The heroes are handsome and strong with just a touch of vulnerability. If I don’t like a character, I can delete him or her; if something doesn’t work, I can rewrite it. It’s very satisfying to be in control of at least one part of my life. My inspiration comes from watching the people around me and fantasizing about how I’d do things differently.

Excerpt:

“Hey, Liza.”

I looked up directly into the smiling face of Braden. He was holding the raffle bucket, and a Sox player stood beside him. I was so unprepared to see him that I couldn’t even get a “hello” to come out of my mouth.

“Would you like to buy a raffle ticket?” he asked.

I felt weird having him talk down to me while I sat, so I sprang to my feet. “Hi. Umm… yeah, I’ll take a couple.”

“Cool. How many?”

I bent to get my wallet and pulled out a five dollar bill. “As many as this will get me?”

The player tore a strip of tickets from the big roll and gave them to Braden before moving on to solicit Em and Dad, who were watching Braden and me with rapt attention. Braden set the bucket down and slowly separated my part of the tickets. Now that there wasn’t a counter between us, I could see his full physique better. The top of my head only reached his chin, so he had to be more than half a foot taller than me. He had a slender build, but he wasn’t scrawny. The short sleeves of his polo showed nicely-defined biceps.

“I remember you,” Quinn said.

Braden laughed. “I remember you, too.”

Quinn might also remember Holly and me discussing Braden’s date potential. I quickly stepped between them so Quinn couldn’t see him.

“I thought you worked concessions,” I said.

“I’m an intern, so I go wherever they tell me. I like doing the raffle better because I get to see more people.”

His eyes held steady on mine in the I’m-only-looking-at-you way they’d done at the concession stand. How was I supposed to come up with witty conversation when my heart was pitter-pattering so loudly I couldn’t even think?

“Were you going to visit me at the concession stand? I’m still waiting for my autograph.” He cocked his head with a sly grin.

“Oh… yeah. I’m sorry. I wasn’t sure if you were really serious.”

“I definitely was. I’ve never met anyone as talented as you. I watched a video of you at the world championships, and you were incredible.”

“You Googled me?”

“What kind of twenty-first century guy would I be if I didn’t?”

I had to break away from his gaze because I felt redness taking over my face. If only I could be incredible and confident right now.

Review:

Such a fun and sweet story!

Even though I can barely stop on skates without an assist from the wall around the rink (this is normal, yes?), for as long as I can remember (every 4 years during the Olympics, at a minimum ;)) I’ ve dreamed of being an ice skater. (Also normal, yes? Everyone plans out skating routines while listening to instrumental music, right? Right??)

So the chance to read a book from the POV of a slightly socially-awkward ice skating Olympic (hopefully) superstar? Sign me up!

I loved both Liza and Braden. Whether it was the beginning, when she practically ran from his flirtiness at the baseball game, when they were going on their first dates, or when they were trying to be just friends (because of her parents and her need to give everything to her skating during the Olympic season), they were just great together. Plus, how many guys will back off immediately when the girl they like tells them they have to devote themselves to their sport instead of dating and be willing to hang out indefinitely in the friend zone in the hopes of someday? (I’m hoping that there are actual guys who will fit that description out there, and not just (darn–is he really just) fictional Braden…)

It was fun seeing the behind-the-scenes life of a top level figure skater–their day-to-day life, training, and competitions–and the fact that Liza reads and writes romantic fiction in her spare time just made me love her even more 🙂

I know I’ll definitely have this book and its characters on my mind the next Winter Olympics…and not just those of The Cutting Edge as per usual… 😉

The audiobook version was nicely done–the narrator has a pleasant voice, and does a great job narrating the story. I’d definitely listen to something else performed by her in the future, even if no figure skating is involved.

Though, hopefully, figure skating will be involved…

Molly grew up in California but now lives in the oh-so-amazing state of Texas with her husband, daughter, and fur babies. When she’s not diving into the world of her characters, some of her hobbies include hiking, snowboarding, traveling, and long walks on the beach … which roughly translates to being a homebody with her hubby and dishing out movie quotes. She has a weakness for crude-humored movies and fried pickles, and loves curling up in a fluffy comforter during a thunderstorm … or under one in a bathtub if there are tornados. That way she can pretend they aren’t really happening.

Review:

Mara and James’ story, the second in the Slippery Rockseries, is a sweet second chance/secret baby romance. I liked James a lot, which isn’t surprising since I liked him in the first book ( Famous in a Small Town ) too, as Collin’s best friend. Here we see him in more detail, learn of his less-than-pristine teenage past, and his secret relationship with the town rebel and Collin’s little sister Mara, who hasn’t been back in town for more than two years. Now he’s running for sheriff, a position formerly held by his father and grandfather, and struggling with wanting to win and wanting to create a life for himself with the town’s former rebel and their son.

Mara was likable too, though her insistence that she was exactly like their parents had been and that her being with James meant that he wouldn’t get the sheriff’s position got to be a bit much at times–it seemed like she should have gotten over it before she did. Still, she was a great mom, and it was nice to see her trying to fix the problems she’d created with her family by leaving so many years ago. Watching her begin to have faith in herself and in the life she could have with James and in Slippery Rock was heartening; their HEA, when it comes, is very sweet. Seeing the rest of their collection of friends once again makes me anxious to see what will be in store for future books in the series, especially Adam and Jenny, Levi, and the mysterious, absent Aiden.
