New Release Review! STORM GATHERING by Rebecca Zanetti (Scorpius Syndrome #4)

Storm Gathering
by Rebecca Zanetti

Synopsis:

Even before surviving the Scorpius bacterium, Greyson Storm was a lone wolf navigating minefields. As a kid, he learned to take a hit and find safety. As an adult, he joined the military and quickly learned how to protect and defend. When the world ended, he created a mercenary camp with military precision, no entanglements, and a promise to avenge a fallen friend. As part of that vow, he kidnapped Maureen Shadow, but now that he has let her go, her blue eyes and intriguing mind keep haunting him…

As possibly the only Biotechnology Engineer still living, Maureen Shadow might be humanity’s one hope to survive the aftermath of Scorpius, making her frighteningly valuable to both allies and enemies. Even after sexual tension explodes with Greyson, she’s not sure which camp he belongs to—friend or foe? Worse yet, survival may mean thwarting his prime mission, putting her in even more peril. When danger and seduction collide, there is no safety in this new world.

Review:

OMG, I love Maureen Shadow–it’s like we’re sisters from another mister. Proof positive:

The only way civilization will survive is if the women just take over. Duh.

You go, girl! And then

At this point, she never wanted to leave the Bunker. Forget Vanuard and Merc territory. There was hot water and mealoaf here.

Spoiler alert: there’s Twinkies too. That Superbowl commercial was totally right! (I knew it!)

But seriously, I really am enjoying the world that Ms. Zanetti has created here. Though perhaps enjoying isn’t exactly the right word–overall, it’s pretty darn terrifying–but the people she’s put there? They’re something else. Strong, smart women and the alpha guys who love them–even when they disable their garage doors to keep them from doing something stupid. (I direct you back to the first quote above. It’s a recurring theme.)

Gathering Storm is the 4th book in the series, and yeah, reading them in order is probably your best bet to completely follow the plot threads that continue from book to book. You do get a bit of background here to remind you/bring you up to date with what’s going on in this world and why, but it will all have more of an impact if you’ve kept up with things all along. Plus, then you’ll better understand why I’m so anxious for Damon’s book–and no, it’s not just because he’s the one with the Twinkies… 😉

Rating: 4 stars / B+

New Release and Giveaway! CAUGHT BEAST MATE by Milana Jacks (Beast Mates #4)

Caught Beast Mate
Milana Jacks
(Beast Mates #4)
Publication date: October 7th 2017
Genres: Dystopian, New Adult, Paranormal, Romance

Her protector, her nemesis. His once-in-a-lifetime second chance.

Kidnapped and taken from her home, Sienna is stuck in a beast community without the resources to find her way back. But she’s a survivor. Just like the wounded, bone-thin beast she finds in the desert.

Torrent was warned never to steal a human woman—especially if she’s his pair. He didn’t listen. Captured, beaten, starved by Men of Earth, he’s as near death as he can get without tipping into the void.

When her familiar scent brings him back to consciousness, recognition slams his gut. But there’s no answering light in her blue eyes. It’s just as well. If she remembered him, she’d know to run from the beast who once took her.

Although the spark of attraction burns bright between them, there’s danger in the heat. Because even if his crippled body had something to offer her, the forces arrayed against them are determined to snuff out their love before it catches flame.

EXCERPT:

“Ah. But werewolves don’t exist.”

“Neither did aliens until you came here.”

“True.”

“It’s the teeth,” she said. “And your jaw. It’s large and hard, and when you open your mouth, all your teeth show. I don’t want to feed you, you know, put my hand inside the jaws.”

“Well, I’m not gonna bite your hand.”

“I don’t know that. The one I remember bit my dad.”

Here goes. “You want to tell me about it?”

“Sure. A beast went after me and Dad. Dad fought him. Before the beast snatched me, Daddy got him in the chest.” She pointed at my scar.

I lifted her hand with mine, picked up the fork, and put it in my mouth. “Go on. Tell me what happened.”

Sienna fed me another few bites. I put my hand over her knee. She paused but didn’t reject my touch.

“We rode to Beast City. He was losing a lot of blood, couldn’t ride his bike. So he parked in the middle of the desert. Then he fell off the bike. I called his people on their emergency channel and told them our location.”

That did not happen. She made it up. “How did you know to call them?”

“Oh, you know, I pressed buttons on his bike until a beast answered my Mayday call.”

“And then what happened?” I squeezed her knee when she put more food in my mouth. I dreaded finishing my meal and searched the tray for dessert or something else she could feed me.

“I told them where we were so they knew to come get their guy.”

“He snatched you and killed your Dad, but you found it in your heart to save his life.”

“I’m not a monster. I couldn’t leave him there.”

She’d robbed me and left me to die. “How did you know where you landed?”

“A compass on the bike’s dashboard.”

“True.”

“The beast died shortly after. Before the help arrived.”

“Penance,” I said. “For taking you.”

“I’m surprised you agree.”

Sienna put the tray away, then stood there for a second. “You’re not as bad as him,” she said.

“Not at all.” I am worse.

“In a few hours, I’ll return with lunch and breakfast. Three meals a day.” It was already after eight at night. I chuckled.

She winked at me and opened the door.

“Thank you,” Zarik said from the hallway. He and the guard walked inside carrying water buckets. They dropped the buckets and pulled the tub to the middle of the room, then poured the water inside the tub. The guard left immediately while Zarik stayed. “For his bath,” he told Sienna.

“He needs one. Can you help him inside? Then we can be off.”

Wait, what? We? There was no “we” with Zarik and Sienna, and there never would be. And I was certain I’d have to kill this male when he brushed his knuckles over her shoulder. The only thing that saved his hand was Sienna. She recoiled from his touch. Damn straight! I sat up and scooted to the edge of the bed. “Thank you, Zarik. That will be all.”

He snorted.

“Got something to say?” I cracked my neck.

His gaze drifted to my stump. I was the weaker of the two of us, but I outranked him and Sienna was mine. Mine! I growled a warning.

“Okay, then,” Sienna said and pushed Zarik out the door. She slammed it shut, folded her arms on her chest, and glared at me.

“What?” I barked.

“What’s your problem?”

“Oh, I can’t even count them all.”

“Try.”

I narrowed my eyes. “You care for me and me only.”

“I care for whomever Hasel asks me to care for, and when you leave, this beast will stay. Such is my shit life until I can leave too.”

“Where are you going?”

“Nowhere. Remember my dad?”

“Mm-hm.”

“He’s alive, and he’s gonna find me. When he finds me, I’m going home.” She flung open the door. “Bye!”

“Wait,” I said. “Do you remember his name?”

“Whose?”

“The beast from the lake?” Shit! Too late. She’d never mentioned a lake.

“Priest. They call him Priest.”

Book Tour Grand Finale for
Crossing in Time
By D.L. Orton

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops, go back and check them out and grab ebook copies of the series on SALE while you can…

Launch – Note from the Author

Love is the most powerful force known to mankind. It wrecks kings, destroys barriers, makes us risk everything for a few stolen moments. . . . And all of this makes for a great story.

Reading for the Stars and Moon – What are your favorite sci-fi books and movies?

I can never seem to remember book titles, and I struggle to recall all the plot twists, but the good characters stick with you. They teach you, change you, become a part of you. I aspire to that with my own writing.

Stormy Nights Reviewing & Bloggin’ – Crossing In Time (Excerpt #1)

The chubby gun trader shifts his weight and looks up at me, one eye squeezed shut. “What sort of rearm you lookin’ to purchase, ma’am?” He’s enthroned on a maroon chintz armchair in front of a burned-out Walmart.

“Handgun,” I say. “Something easy to aim and shoot.”

Hearts & Scribbles – Ask the Characters: How Difficult Is It to Be a Character in D.L. Orton’s Book?

Isabel: There were times when I wasn’t sure I wanted to trust a writer with my life. Still, Ms. Orton cares about the same things I do, and I’m dying to see how things turn out. In the end, I wasn’t keen on some of the scarier scenes (and I’m still sad about all those animals), but the author assures me that everything will work out in the end. Right, Diego?

I Love Books – The Journey Is the Reward

What’s the moral of the story? Don’t take the ones you love for granted. They could disappear at any moment—and time machines are pretty hard to come by. Put your arms around someone you care about and just enjoy the moment. The journey is the reward.

Rockin’ Book Reviews – Review

“This is a steadily progressing story of love gone awry, reconciliation, commitment, sacrifice for love and mankind, and time travel. The novel begins with a “interest-catching Prologue, then quickly begins to formulate the story on a solid foundation, constantly building in momentum until it ends in a solid climax, leaving the reader anxious for the next sequel in the story! It is complete with romance, suspense, adventure and life’s lessons.”

Kindle and Me – Review

“If you like other universes with the same people, nuclear bombs, physics, emergency preparedness, giving up your life for someone you love, dogs, cats, jokes, finding that one special person, biodomes, peeing on a handkerchief with smoke everywhere, and maybe a way to save us all from our mistakes then this might be for you!”

Wishful Endings – Crossing In Time (Excerpt #2)

“Still…” The gun trader waits for me to meet his eyes. “I s’pose I could use some fancy flavorings on my venison.”

I regard the only overweight man in a sea of famine, disgusted with the whole human race and embarrassed by my own full stomach.

Zerina Blossom’s Books – Author Interview

Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or is it purely all imagination?

Who hasn’t looked back at a turning point in his or her life and wondered how things might have played out differently?

I met and fell in love with the man I’m married to when we were twenty-eight, and one of the first trips we took together was to attend the wedding of his best buddy from college. At the reception, I ended up seated next to my husband’s ex-girlfriend! Despite an awkward introduction, she and I hit if off, and we ended up comparing notes. (You should have seen his face when he realized we were talking about him.) At the end of the evening, she said something that stuck with me: I wish I would have met him at a different time in my life.

Celticlady’s Reviews – How Does Time Travel Work in the Between Two Evils Multiverse?

Take a shower curtain, some ants, and a bowling ball.

Start with the shower curtain. It’s a two-dimensional object in a 3-dimensional world. Imagine, now, that you are an ant, walking, talking, and shagging other ants on this thin, flexible membrane (or a “brane” in physics-speak). Layered above and below you are a million other shower curtains, all of them with their own allotment of ants (some of which get paid 78 cents on the dollar due to slight differences in their copulatory organs).

deal sharing aunt – Review

“I enjoy a good time travel and that is what this book is. It has a great romance and a second chance at love. I enjoyed the world the author created and thought that the author did a great job traveling in time.”

Colorimetry – Lost Time (Excerpt #1)

I lie in the greenish half-light, my lungs on fire, panic forcing out any rational thought.

And then I remember where I am—or rather where I should be.

I pound my fists against the translucent coffin lid until I manage to hit the release lever. The top pops open and frigid air rushes in, smelling of damp earth and evergreens.

I gasp for breath, my heart pounding.

The last thing I remember is a panicked voice shouting to abort the mission. Stop the countdown because…

fuonlyknew – Review

“The beginning swiftly pulls you in. The plot deepens and the characters emerge. And as you draw near to the conclusion, you’re gripped in a vise of suspense that brings tears to your eyes, fearing and hoping for what comes last.”

Angels With Attitude Book Reviews – Dead Time (Excerpt #1)

I’m trying to be brave, Mom, but it’s harder than I thought.

All the jeeps and other equipment are gone now, and I count four dingy biosuits slogging toward me through the downpour. I gaze up at the sloped wall of the massive biodome, wishing it didn’t look so… alien.

What would Madders do?

He’d be collecting data, not blubbering like a D-2 who fell off a swing and scraped her knee. Identify the problem, engineer a solution, and Bob’s your uncle.

Bookworm Lisa – Review

“The book involves time travel, an orb with a message, seashells, love, and secret government projects. It is a fascinating book.”

Booklove – Review

“The book, Crossing In Time was a one sit read for me with intriguing and captivating characters, unique, thrilling and original plot and a hooking prose . A perfect read for every Sci-Fi and romance lover.”

Knowledge is a dangerous commodity in the Home commune, the last beacon of civilization against the fallen outside world. As Suzannah Commons begins to secretly read forbidden books, she jeopardizes her future for the forbidden love of the boy who supplies her new, dangerous habit, Silas Maars, and his family. Will her new-found knowledge be her destruction?

Suzannah is in training with the rest of the unmarried teenage girls in the Handmaiden House and Home’s laundry to become a bride when she accidentally comes upon a naked boy in one of the family quarters, Silas Maars. To see a naked man before marriage is an unforgivable sin in Home and a challenge to her precious status as a virgin, her only aspect of worth. This compromise to her purity would earn her an automatic exile in the Hard Labor Camp, a death sentence until the commune leader, Parson, sentences her to the punishment of serving Silas and his unusual family as a housekeeper. As she works for the Maars family and is isolated from the rest of the commune’s population, she discovers the frightening, threatening outside world is not as dangerous as she has been led to believe. The Maars family reveals to her that Deacon controls the population of Home by keeping them all ignorant, denying them education and books so he can teach his own twisted, corrupt, self-serving version of religion from the pulpit. As she learns the truth and begins to fall into a star-crossed love with Silas, her fate as a childbride to one of the lecherous Elders or a worker in the hard labor camp is drawing nigh.

Jude Houghton, Author of AUTONOMY, Talks About Novel Inspiration and More! (with a giveaway!)

Talk about your inspiration for this novel…

I wanted to write a book that anticipates where the world is headed in the next twenty years, and in doing so, had many sources of inspiration ranging from large macro issues such as global warming, over population, terrorism, the ubiquity of corporate interests in every aspect of government, to more idiosyncratic but equally pervasive trends; smart screens and technologies designed to both limit and enhance our minds, the willingness to abdicate real life experiences for instant gratification and the insidious manipulation of various media.

Who was your favourite character?

My favourite character is, of course, the hero of the book – Balmoral Murraine. From a writing perspective, she practically wrote her own lines, navigating the desperate life into which she was born. I love the way she evolves during the novel. I love how strong she is, despite how much is thrown at her, and how she struggles to find humanity within herself despite knowing there is very little in the world around her.

What were the stumbling blocks?

I knew how the book had to begin. I knew how it had to end. It was the other 150,000 words that were the problem. The way I write is in intense bursts, but if the story is not coming, I can sometimes spend a long time doing very, very little. Balancing erasers on pencils usually. Fortunately, the blocks didn’t last too long, and the characters were pretty good at getting themselves out of scrapes and getting on with where they needed to go.

Author Bio:

Jude developed a love of fantasy from a relatively early age after realising an innate talent for making stuff up could result in something other than detention. Working across the globe in fields as diverse as journalism, data entry, sales, management consultancy and babysitting, Jude has partially succeeded in putting an English and History degree from Oxford University to good use. A somnambulist, insomniac, lover of letters, Jude writes late into the night, most nights, tumbling down the rabbit hole to dream of other lives. Jude currently lives in Pennsylvania with an over-enthusiastic family and absurdly entitled dog.

Balmoral Murraine works in a Battery, assembling devices she doesn’t understand for starvation pay. Pasco Eborgersen is the pampered son of an Elite, trying to navigate the temptations of the Pleasure Houses, the self-sacrifice of the Faith, and the high-octane excitement of Steel Ball. They are two strangers, who never should have met, and now they will rip apart the world.

What happens when ninety percent of the world lives on skaatch – a jellyfish and insect composite?

What happens when mankind spends more time in alternative life sims instead of in the “real” world?

What happens when economic interest is the sole determinant of global decision making?

Amy Braun, Author of MIDNIGHT SKY (Dark Sky #2) Talks About Writing Sequels (with a giveaway!)

MIDNIGHT SKY was probably the most challenging novel in the series to write. Sequels need to carry the events of the first story and act as the gateway to the grand finale. I wanted this story to have a dramatic end, but I needed events to carry the story and close certain questions. I was excited to delve back into the world of Westraven and add new history to the story. I decided to focus on the backstories of Claire’s parents, since their actions are crucial to the series and the story as a whole.

The map I sketched of Westraven became more detailed, and I think my favorite setting to write in this story was the Barren, a haunting, once militarized portion of Westraven that holds history for more than one member of the Dauntless crew. World-building is one of my favorite things to write about, and I was excited to jump back into Westraven and expand its setting.

Another exciting element was the love triangle between Claire, Sawyer, and Riley. I’d always planned for a rocky relationship between Claire and Sawyer, given their strong wills and butting-heads, but I’ve never written a love triangle. Riley was a late addition to the DARK SKY universe, and I was so glad to include him. His story is a complex, terrifying one, and since he seeks Claire’s affection, it forces Sawyer to consider his attitude when the risk of losing Claire’s heart becomes evident. He doesn’t trust Riley and fears for Claire’s safety, but to win her over he’ll have to change. By the time the story was over, I could tell that all of the characters had grown, though Sawyer’s arc was perhaps the most apparent.

Starting the story took a little longer than I intended, but I was flying through it by the end. The final scenes were written at 2:00AM because I couldn’t sleep without the idea jotted down. I was very happy it ended the way it did, considering what will be coming in the final novel. Since MIDNIGHT SKY grew so close to my heart, I decided to put more effort into its promotion, seeking the help of XPresso Tours and En Pointe Author Services to help with blog tours, release blitzes, and review opportunities. I’m so pleased to have taken that risk, since it has definitely paid off.

There was a fair amount of editing recommended by both my Beta reader and my editor, but I was grateful for their insight. I constantly strive to improve my writing, and correcting my bad writing habits helps produce a stronger story.

One of the best moments in this journey was seeing the cover for MIDNIGHT SKY, created by Deranged Doctor Design. They blew me away with the CRIMSON SKY cover (and every other cover they’ve made for me), and I decided to put a little more insight into what I wanted from the sequel’s cover. The result was stellar. I couldn’t be happier with the look of the cover, and am dying to see what they’ll create for the final novel and two novellas of the DARK SKY series.

Writing sequels is always daunting. You want to carry on with what readers love, but you also want to introduce new elements to make the series stronger as a whole. I’ve never written an ending like this before, so I hope my efforts paid off. I know that I’m happy and proud and passionate about MIDNIGHT SKY, and I think new readers and fans of the previous novel will find it to their liking.

A Conversation with L.E. Sterling, Author of TRUE BORN (True Born #1)

conversation

Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today, L.E.! What 5 things should readers know about you?

  1. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Drake has renamed our city the “6ix” but no one seems to know why.
  2. I “prepared” for writing a science fiction book like True Born by working for some of the world’s top biomedical engineers. My job was to tell stories about their work. (Seriously. That’s a job). Essentially, that meant I’d hang around in labs and get these amazing scientists and grad students to explain everything to me like I was a small child. It worked, though, because now I can tell you all sorts of interesting factoids about nanoparticles and DNA proteins.
  3. I have a PhD in English Literature – but my thesis was on magic! Yup, more cool preparation for writing science fiction and fantasy novels!
  4. I have published two previous novels. The Originals can be found under my original pen name, L.E. Vollick (and was even published in French: Les Originaux). Pluto’s Gate, my second novel, is published under L.E. Sterling. Both of these novels can be found widely (if you’re interested) and, if you live in Canada, at the public library.
  5. True Born was originally published as a novella on Wattpad – which is all it was ever originally intended to be. I wrote it as back story for another set of novels I intended to write about Dominion City, but it really took off, so I continued the story…and it spun into a trilogy.

You do seem to be uniquely prepared! (And according to UrbanDictionary.com, “6ix” is derived from your area code, 416. But how 6ix = 416 isn’t explained…am I just missing it? Is it some weird Canadian math, maybe?)

Tell us all about your main characters—who are they? What makes them tick? Most importantly, what one thing would they need to have with them if stranded on a desert isle? 😉

Lucy and Margot Fox are identical sisters. Lucy thinks of herself as the dull and responsible sister, while Margot has always been the vivacious, outgoing twin. But all that starts to change through the course of the novel, and Lucy comes to know herself in a new light, while Margot…well, you’ll see.

What would they need on a desert island? Each other! Lucy and Margot find separation very difficult. They are very special twins, as you’ll find out!

Intriguing!

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

This is an interesting book for me because it was inspired by the true story of my great grandmother. She was born in England and sent to the U.S. at a very young age by her recently widowed mother to become an indentured servant. I imagine the whole voyage was traumatic, because apparently my great-grandmother forgot her identity through the crossing. When she finally arrived in the U.S. she gave the officials, and her new ‘family’, her twin’s name – and she lived her entire life, until she was an adult, as her twin until she discovered the truth. I loved the idea of having a bond with someone that was so close that it took over your own, so I explored this in a fictional world.

Wow—what an amazing story and inspiration!

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I’ve been writing since I was a little girl – seriously. I published my first article when I was in grade 3, I think, and I wrote my first (terrible sci-fi/fantasy/YA/dystopian) novel when I was 11. I remember reading a particularly interesting and moving book when I was around 9 or 10 and thinking to myself: that’s what I am going to do. I want to reach into people’s minds and affect them, maybe even change them, through telling them a story. After that, there really wasn’t anything else I was inspired to do with my life.

Awesome!

What do you like best about being a writer? What is the most challenging part?

I love disappearing into the worlds I’m making, and immersing myself into my characters. I love these people – I don’t think one could write good fiction unless one loved his or her characters. On the flip side of that, though, is the challenge of making it good! I constantly worry myself over quality: is the plot good enough? The characters deep and interesting enough? But to be quite honest, the hardest part about being a writer is finding the time to sit down and write!

Isn’t that the truth!

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I’m actually hard at work on the second and third books in the True Born Trilogy. Book 2, True North, comes out in April 2017. Stay tuned! Book 2 is coming!

Awesome! Can’t wait!

What authors and/or books have inspired you?

The list is so long it’s painful. But let’s start with some people I consistently turn to in order to learn how to write better (and also because, goshdarnit, I LOVE their books!): Ilona Andrews, Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Tanya Huff, Cassandra Clare, Diana Gabaldon, and Karen Chance.

It is convenient that we can keep reading them and chalk it up to writing research, isn’t it? 😉

What are you currently reading? What are your thoughts about it so far?

I’m reading Fire Touched by Patricia Briggs, the latest in the Mercy Thompson series. I have read almost every book this author has written (and sometimes more than once). I love it, of course. I am amazed that Briggs has been able to put out consistently brilliant novels in this series. I think that’s a hard thing to do, and it’s a skill I need to learn very quickly!

Ooh, I’ve got that series on my TBR. It is amazing that authors can keep writing at the same level of awesomeness, isn’t it?

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Okay, well, I’m not very good at putting out in the Twitterverse, but I wrote a haiku once to describe the book, and it comes in well under 140 characters. And so:

Moody antlers rule

What the Fox twins’ blood reveals –

The blond panther snarls.

LOL! I love it! 🙂

About the author:

L.E. Sterling had an early obsession with sci-fi, fantasy and romance to which she remained faithful even through an M.A. in Creative Writing and a PhD in English Literature – where she completed a thesis on magical representation. She is the author of two previous novels, the cult hit Y/A novel The Originals (under pen name L.E. Vollick), dubbed “the Catcher in the Rye of a new generation” by one reviewer, and the urban fantasy Pluto’s Gate.

Originally hailing from Parry Sound, Ontario, L.E. spent most of her summers roaming across Canada in a van with her father, a hippie musician, her brothers and an occasional stray mutt – inspiring her writing career. She currently lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Ascension Series Book Trailer:

EXCERPT:

She smiled.

Although she couldn’t kill an inanimate object, Fran knew she could easily take out a small lens. She glanced around, hoping to distinguish the Graphie in front her from his life-giving light source. Because of the darkened backdrop, for the first time, Fran was easily able to follow one of his beams to a nearby potted palm. She hurried to the plant and squatted low, feeling around for anything plastic or metal. Her fingers lit under a green-tinged beam, and she moved her hand along the surface. When she felt the nub, Fran smiled and stood. With the toe of her hard boot, she kicked the lens until she felt it shatter. Fran shot a glance over her shoulder to check on the guard, thrilled to see he had taken on a strange, two-dimensional shape. She scanned the area for another beam.

The gaming board.

Fran hurried to the board and ran her hand along the pole that it sat upon. With her arm fully extended overhead, she felt the nub. Too high to kick. She looked around for something to hit it with when an idea struck her. After running back to the plant, she grabbed a handful of glass stones from the pot and pulled the sling from her side. Load, swing, and release.

Although Fran couldn’t hear the whistle of the stone over the Agora’s white noise, the undeniable crack of the lens reached her ears as bits of plastic flew from the pole. She whipped around to face the Graphie again, but now only a single red beam of light pulsed where he had stood. She followed the red beam to the leg of a nearby bench and laughed out loud as she wound up and launched her stone. The last ray died out and as the area darkened, Fran could hear a chatter rise from the small crowd of residents now released from the Graphie’s hold.
