A Conversation with Kari Lynn Dell, Author of TANGLED IN TEXAS (with a giveaway!)

Welcome, Kari Lynn! What 5 things should readers know about you?

  • I am, in person, one of the least romantic, most logic-bound people you’ll ever meet. We don’t even celebrate Valentine’s Day. My husband hates watching movies with me because I insist on pointing out plot holes and illogical character arcs, but I am incapable of just letting it go.
  • I am currently, simultaneously addicted to astrophysicist Neil Degrasse Tyson’s podcast Star Talk and binge-watching the first season of Glee. I love me some show tunes and theories of relativity.
  • Ninety-nine percent of the scenes in Tangled involving Delon’s rehab were written from personal experience. I studied sports medicine in college and worked as a clinic-based athletic trainer in South Dakota and Oregon, spending my afternoons, evenings and weekends on the sidelines of local high school practices and games. Ask me about any sport, I’ve probably watched a thousand or so hours of it. Mornings I worked in the physical therapy clinic rehabbing athletes, just like Tori.
  • Also like Tori, I am obsessed with big rigs and would love to climb in and do a cross country road trip. Especially with someone who looks like Delon and has a chocolate stash. I would settle for my husband, though, who actually owns a commercial driver’s license. But sadly, not a truck.
  • I grew up as a rodeo rat, hanging out behind the chutes while my parents were competing. Beni Sanchez is a conglomeration of all the wise-beyond-their-years cowkids I’ve known. And been.

Fascinating! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

It all started with the George Strait song, I Can Still Make Cheyenne, about a professional cowboy who has been dropping in and out of a woman’s life as his rodeo schedule allowed. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKXdnBGIcm0 ) Finally one day he calls to say he’s coming home and she tells him not to bother, she’s found someone new. I love that song. And it got me thinking—what kind of guy would take off for weeks and not even call, and what kind of woman would put up with him? What would happen if their paths cross again, years down the road when they’re both older and wiser and life has knocked them around some? My imagination took it from there, and Delon and Tori were born.

Oooh, I love that song too! Awesome inspiration!

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I started writing in the late ‘90s. We were living in Oregon and I was working as an athletic trainer at Pendleton High School, so I had summers off. I’ve always done a lot of reading—anything and everything—but romance has been one of my mainstays. As a rancher and cowgirl it was natural for me to gravitate toward western romances, but what I found wasn’t the world I live in. The characters didn’t look the same or talk the same as the cowboys and cowgirls I knew. In many cases the rodeo or ranch setting was a backdrop, not a central part of the plot. So with an entire summer vacation stretching ahead of me, I decided to write my own. Much to my surprise, I was good at it—and I got hooked.

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I am currently working on the fourth book in the Texas Rodeo series (due spring 2018), what I call Shakedown in Texas on the good days, and This Damn Book the rest of the time. It stars Wyatt, the best friend of the hero of the first book, Reckless in Texas, and Melanie, the lifetime BFF of the heroine of the same book. Which makes things complicated right off the bat because, as one character points out, “You two hooking up would be like dating your best friend’s sister.” And it just gets weirder from there.

My next release will be Tougher in Texas which is currently available for pre-order at all of the usual online outlets or your local indie bookstore. I don’t like to play favorites, but I have to say, Shawnee (who you meet in Tangled) is my favorite heroine to date. Imagine Melissa McCarthy as a cowgirl, at her outrageous, sarcastic best. Then throw her together with Cole Jacobs, who was diagnosed as autistic at the end of Reckless in Texas and treasures nothing more than his safe, predictable routines. Wow, were they fun to write.

I bet—and they sound like even more fun to read!

What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?

The last book I read was The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, and it was awesome. A great study in how to write a story that is very narrowly focused on the hero and heroine, especially for a someone like me who loves her secondary characters and sub-plots. As for what I’m currently reading—I am banned from my To-Be-Read pile until I survive the release of Tangled and get through the first draft of Shakedown.

That sounds like a plan! Maybe I should ban myself from my TBR until the end of the semester…? Nope, not that strong. 😉

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Pro bronc rider Delon Sanchez lost everything when his knee was shattered. One person can help him get it back—the woman who broke his heart.

Perfect! Thanks so much, Kari Lynn!

It took 32 seconds to end his career.

But it only took 1 to change his life.

Thirty-two seconds. That’s how long it took for Delon Sanchez’s life to end. One minute he was the best bronc rider in the Panhandle and the next he was nothing. Knee shattered, future in question, all he can do is pull together the pieces…and wonder what cruel trick of fate has thrown him into the path of his ex, the oh-so-perfect Tori Patterson.

Tori’s come home after her husband’s death, intent on escaping the public eye. It’s just her luck that Delon limps into her physical therapy office, desperate for help. All hard-packed muscle and dark-eyed temptation, he’s never been anything but a bad idea. And yet, seeing him again, Tori can’t remember what made her choose foolish pride over love…or why, with this second, final chance to right old wrongs, the smartest choice would be to run from this gorgeous rodeo boy as fast as her boots can take her.

Excerpt:

Moments, later, they approached Carl Miller’s home. Meg stared at the two-story building. Even though she knew he was wealthy, she hadn’t expected such an elegant residence on this remote island. Several of the upper story rooms had balconies. A stone façade around the lower level gave the house a sturdy, solid look, while large windows added a light, airy touch. In front stood three totems painted in the traditional Northwest Indian colors of red, blue, and black.

Jones pulled the cart to a stop. “Gotta get the keys to your cottages from Laureen. You might as well come in and meet her.”

Meg followed Eric and Jones up a stone walkway lined with ferns to large double doors carved with Indian designs. Jones pushed open one door, and they stepped into a spacious, sky-lighted entry….

Footsteps sounded on the marble floor, and a woman appeared from the house’s interior. She wore tan slacks and a white tunic top. Her gray hair was cropped close on the top and sides, and long in the back.

“Welcome to Gemini.” Smiling, the woman extended her hand first to Meg and then to Eric. “I’m Laureen, Carl’s house manager.”

After greetings were exchanged, Jones said, “Where’re we putting ‘em?”

“Guest cottages. Miz Evans in Wolf House, Mr. Richards in Bear.”

“The cottages are named after Indian clans,” Eric commented.

Laureen nodded. “You’ll like ‘em. They’re very comfortable. Here’re your keys.” She dipped a hand into her tunic pocket and pulled out two key rings, handing one to Meg and the other to Eric. “Oh, and Carl wants you for cocktails before dinner so be back here by six. And don’tcha be late. Carl’s a stickler for bein’ on time.”

LOVE STORY
a Love Unexpectedly novel
Lauren Layne
Releasing February 14th, 2017
Loveswept

Over the course of one wild road trip, feuding childhood sweethearts get a second chance at love in this charming rom-com—a standalone novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Blurred Lines and Good Girl.

When Lucy Hawkins receives a job offer in San Francisco, she can’t wait to spread her wings and leave her small Virginia hometown behind. Her close-knit family supports her as best they can, by handing over the keys to a station wagon that’s seen better days. The catch? The cross-country trip comes with a traveling companion: her older brother’s best friend, aka the guy who took Lucy’s virginity hours before breaking her heart.

After spending the past four years and every last dime caring for his sick father, Reece Sullivan will do just about anything to break free of the painful memories—even if it means a two-week road trip with the one girl who’s ever made it past his carefully guarded exterior. But after long days of bickering in the car turn into steamy nights in secluded motel rooms, Reece learns that, when it comes to Lucy, their story is far from over. And this time, they just might have a shot at a happy ending.

Although listed as a title in the Love Unexpectedly Series, all books in the series stand alone.

“Spock, we’re giving you Horny!” my mom blurts out, apparently fed up with my denseness.

Her utterance is too much for my siblings to handle and they both burst out laughing, retreating into the kitchen to rejoin the party where there’s wine.

Oh what I wouldn’t give for wine right now.

“I, um . . . you’re giving me the car?” I ask.

“Because yours broke down,” my dad explains, walking forward to thump Horny’s dented hood.

“And this one’s . . . not broken down?” I ask skeptically.

Look, it’s not that I’m not grateful. My parents are trying to give me a car, I appreciate the sweetness of the gesture, it’s just . . .

Here’s the thing about Horny: he barely got us three kids through high school. I mean, Horny is the car that sputtered and shook making it the 3.2 miles to Jefferson High, no matter who was behind the wheel.

I’m even going to come all the way clean here and say that early on in my freshmen year, I was embarrassed showing up in Horny. Then I realized I was lucky to have a car at all, and well . . . I dunno, I guess Horny became a part of us Hawkins kids’ charm, because the station wagon was practically an institution from Craig’s high school reign all the way through Brandi’s.

But poor Horny quit working years ago. Much to Brandi’s chagrin, he gave up the ghost a mere two months before her high school graduation, and I spent the last bit of her senior year being picked up by my parents.

“He’s going to take you to California,” Dad says, giving the car another thump.

“Really?” I step forward and run a tentative finger along the familiar panel. He’s had a bath, so at least that’s something. “Because last I knew, he wouldn’t even make it out of the garage.”

“Yeah, well, we neglected him for a while, but he’s right as rain now,” Dad says, puffing out his chest as though Horny’s a fourth child.

“Like, as in he actually starts?”

“Purrs like a kitten,” my mom says with an emphatic nod, even though I know she doesn’t even like cats. “We didn’t believe it, but we took him to church on Sunday and there were no issues.”

I literally bite my tongue to keep from pointing out that this is hardly a feat. Sacred Presbyterian is 0.8 miles away from the house.

“You took Horny into a shop?” I ask, starting to warm to the idea of having a car again. I’m a little touched, actually. Money is tight for my parents. Dad’s a PE teacher, and Mom gives a mean winery tour, but the gig’s never paid much.

“Not exactly, it was more of a bartering situation,” Mom says.

“Yeah?” I say, going around to the driver’s seat, already giddy with the prospect of telling Oscar I’ll be able to come see him in Miami after all, even if I won’t exactly be riding in style.

“Reece agreed to fix him up.”

I’m lowering myself into the car as my dad says this, but I reverse so quickly I hit my head. My skull doesn’t even register the pain, because I’m too busy registering the hurt in my heart at the familiar name. “I’m sorry, what?”

“Reece,” my mom says, giving me a bemused look. “He’s always been handy with cars.”

“He fixed up the car in exchange for what?”

And then I feel—I actually feel—the air change around me as the side door to the garage opens, and a new presence sucks all the air out of the space.

I don’t turn around. I don’t move. But I feel his eyes on me. Over me.

“Reece is headed out to California too,” my oblivious mother chatters on. “It worked out perfectly actually. Now you two can ride together, and your dad and I don’t have to worry about you alone in the middle of nowhere with a twenty-something-year-old car.

They think the car is going to be the problem here? It’s not the car that’s toxic to me. It’s him.

Reece Sullivan. My brother’s best friend. My parents’ “other son.”

Slowly I force myself to turn, and even though I’m prepped, the force of that ice-blue gaze still does something dangerous to me.

He winks, quick and cocky, and I suck in a breath, and I have to wonder . . .

I wonder if my parents would feel differently about their little plan if they knew that their makeshift mechanic is the same guy that popped my cherry six years earlier under their very roof.

And then broke my heart twenty-four hours later.

New Release Review and Giveaway! LAW AND DISORDER by Heather Graham (The Finnegan Connection #1)

Synopsis:

Trust the enemy?

Desperate to escape her kidnappers, Kody Cameron can turn to only one man…and he’s holding a gun. Outnumbered and trapped in the deadly Everglades, she has little recourse, but something in this captor’s eyes makes her believe she can trust him. Does she dare to take the risk?

Undercover agent Nick Connolly has met Kody before and knows she might very well blow his cover. Though determined to maintain his facade, he can’t let Kody die. He won’t. And his decision to change his own rules of law and order are about to make all hell break loose.

Review:

A fairly quick read; I believe this book (first in The Finnegan Connection) is at least loosely connected to another series–a number of characters were briefly mentioned and/or made appearances here who were familiar to both Kody and Nick–but as a series starter it worked just fine as a standalone.

The romance here takes a second seat to the suspense/action plot, which is fine–we get our fill later on, when (we think!) the danger has passed. Or has it? 😉 The setting was intriguing (though a bit over-described at times)–it really made me want to visit the Everglades, though I have to admit doing so at gunpoint would not be my first choice. I was entertained by the story even if not quite drawn into it–some pretty big coincidences, and the plot was a bit thin in parts–still, I’d be interested to see where this series will head next.

Rating: 3 stars / C+

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

New Release and Giveaway! HIS FAKE ALIEN FIANCEE by Patricia Eimer (Out of this World #2)

His Fake Alien Fiancee
by Patricia Eimer
Out of this World #2
Publication Date: February 6, 2017
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Select Otherworld, Standalone, Sci-Fi, Romance, Funny, Fake Relationship

Synopsis:

Princess Perripraxis not only has to find a fiancé—and fast—she’s got to find one who doesn’t mind that her “no makeup” face has green and purple scales. Otherwise, Daddy Dearest has plans that don’t include Perri’s compliance. Candidate Number One: Her sexy human best friend, Brandt.

Bartender Brandt Turner didn’t need all those years in the army to teach him never to leave a man behind. Or an alien princess in need of a pretend fiancé. If she needs someone to play the lovesick fool to convince her dad to let her stay on Earth, well then, he’ll let the world think Cupid finally took him out.

But Perri’s father has no intention of playing nice—and he’s not above cruel and unusual alien torture to make things go his way. But Brandt is willing to complete the mission…however far he has to go.

Excerpt:

He lifted his head slightly and nudged hers back with his cheek, intending to kiss her forehead. To be tender. To be a friend.

But her lips were there and they looked like strawberries against her green skin and he knew even as her eyes widened and connected with his that this was a bad idea.

He brought his lips down on top of hers and he found that he didn’t care. Didn’t care that she was the princess of a galactic empire. That his best friend was in love with her sister. That she was green. That they were friends. That he’d promised himself he wasn’t going to get involved with someone he actually cared about.

Didn’t even care that the taste of her lips against his made him feel like he was falling off a cliff and into a serious pile of shit.

They both shifted, moving so they were facing, and he brought his hands up to cradle her face with his left while he wrapped his right around her waist, hoisting her off her own stool and into his lap.

She had her fingers entwined in his hair and was kissing him like he was her only source of air.

The tip of her tongue licked against his mouth, and he began to kiss back, chasing her into her own mouth. He tightened his grip on her, pressing their chests together, and he fought the urge to shift his hips into her, to maneuver them onto the top of his bar.

They were friends and they’d had too much to drink and she was upset and this was the last thing either of them needed.

She grabbed the front of his shirt right above the top button and jerked downward, ripping the shirt apart and sending buttons flying.

Right, then. He kept a tight grip on her hips so she didn’t fall off his lap and brought his other hand down to start fumbling with the knot that held her sheet-toga-ceremonial robe thing closed.

She let go of his shirt and started squirming, pulling the hem up, refusing to let go of his lips, and he tried his best to help her get the thing off over her head.

“Wait.” He broke his lips away from hers and wrapped his arms around her waist, hoisting her up as he stood and dropped her onto the bar, pulling the material off over her head, trying not to drool because how had he not realized that she’d been going commando under that sheet?

“Brandt.” She grabbed the sides of his dress shirt and pulled him close again, pressing their lips together, and suddenly his sweet little Perri had gotten forceful. “Didn’t you just tell me I’d been on Earth six months and I needed to go ahead and have sex already?”

“Well.” He wasn’t sure what to say. He’d been with a lot of women who liked it a lot of different ways. But he’d never been quite as turned on as he was right this very second with the little woman in front of him handling him like a rag doll.

“Yes?”

“And that it should be with someone who didn’t freak out when they found out I was green?”

“Uh-huh?” He studied her, some weird mixture of turned on and really fucking intimidated.

“That leaves three possibilities. Anderson Fox is not interested in having sex with a female. Mattias is in love with my sister. And then there’s you. Ding ding ding, Brandt Turner, you are a winner. Now take me upstairs and take my earth virginity already.”

“Um…” he muttered once before she managed to press their lips together again, and all he could think was, “Sure.

Okay. Best to give the lady what she wants.”

“Now,” she growled.

And to think, he’d thought she was the mild-mannered alien princess in the lot.

New Release and Giveaway! ONE MORE KISS by Samantha Chase

MATT REED IS HIDING…

…from his fans

…from his past

…from a failure too painful to contemplate

Most of all, Matt is hiding from himself.

VIVIENNE FORRESTER IS A WOMAN WHO GIVES HER ALL…

…to her friends and family

…to her online food blog

…to the man she loves

Vivienne will try anything and everything to coax Matt out of his self-imposed exile. But for this to work, Matt is going to have to meet her halfway…

Excerpt:

Matt continued to silently stare at her.

“Please say something,” she prompted nervously, chewing on her bottom lip.

“I…I don’t know if I can do that.”

A nervous chuckle came out before she could stop it. “What – you mean you don’t know if you can say anything?”

He shook his head. “I don’t know if I can start over.”

Vivienne was completely confused. “Why not? I think it would be a good thing. For both of us.”

“I disagree,” he said, resting his elbows on the table so he could lean his cheek in the palm of his hand.

“I don’t understand why…”

“I kind of like where we are right now. I don’t want to pretend the past didn’t happen. I’m enjoying the banter we have and the way I find it so easy to talk to you. I think if we ignore that night – that kiss – then we’re both denying a part of who we are.”

Well damn. That was a pretty powerful declaration, she thought. “But…it wasn’t me that night,” she argued. “I honestly don’t know why I did any of it. This is who I am,” she said, patting herself on the chest. “I’m an introvert who likes things neat and orderly. I hate chaos, and I plan out everything. I hate leaving anything to chance, and I rarely take risks. I like my world to be predictable and organized. I make lists, and I like to check things off. The person you’re remembering, doesn’t really exist.”

“Again, I disagree.”

“Ugh,” she groaned and stood to clear the table. “Do you deliberately go out of your way to make things difficult all the damn time?”

Matt stood and helped her with the dishes. “Viv, I’m not trying to make anything difficult. If anything, I’m simplifying things. You came to see me. We kissed. We didn’t see each other for a while. Now we’re both here and we kissed again.” He placed the dishes in the dishwasher before turning and looking at her again. “And – if we’re completely honest for the sake of keeping things simple – we’re both still attracted to one another.”

Great. She wanted to stamp her foot and tell him to leave, but she would only be proving his point. So now what?

“I…I don’t know what it is you want me to say to that,” she admitted. And if she wasn’t mistaken, he almost looked pleased.

“What I want is for you to tell me I’m not wrong. That this isn’t all completely one-sided.” Before she could answer, however, he started speaking again. “But I’ll understand if you’re not ready to yet. I can be patient, Vivienne, and I believe you’re worth waiting for.”

And then, in a move that took her totally by surprise, Matt leaned down and placed a whisper-soft kiss on her cheek before stepping back. “I know you have some shopping to do and errands to run. I’m going to go back over to Aaron’s and relax and maybe watch a little TV. When you’re ready to start working on dinner, let me know, and I’ll come over and help.”

All Vivienne could do was nod and watch him walk out the door.

Playing tennis is the only way to connect to the girl she used to be before tragedy struck. The day Bryce Coulter turns up at her court, she turns on that classic attitude. If there’s anything she’s learned it’s how to make a guy run. Except, he’s not running. And maybe she doesn’t want him to….

EXCERPT:

Had he scared her away? Had he been too much of a creeper watching her last night? Maybe it came down to the simple reason that she didn’t practice every day. Or, not at the same time every day. She very likely had a job, and depending on what she did for a living, her hours might not be the same every day. Although, he mused, regardless of whatever it was that she did for a living, he was sure that she should be playing tennis.

Why are you so pressed? She’s just a girl.

No. There was something about her. He just needed the chance to talk to her again. Okay, yes, if he was being totally honest with himself, it was in part because he wanted her, but he also wanted to find out more about her, and why she wasn’t playing the way she should. He couldn’t be the first person who knew about tennis to have seen her play.

“Where d’you think you’re going, gimpy?” A voice called from behind.

Bryce turned to see who’d spoken, and a foot shot out, kicking one of his crutches out from under him and sending him sprawling. Fuck. He landed on his bad knee. He writhed as the pain shot from his knee up his quad and down his shin. “Fuck, fuck. Motherfucker.” In the next moment, a man was on top of him with a switchblade in his face. All he could see was the knife, as sour, cigarette-scented breath fouled up his oxygen supply.

“I want your wallet and your keys,” the asshole demanded. “And if you even think about—”

But the guy’s words were cut off. His head bobbed forward. Something hit him again on the back of his head and he sagged on top of Bryce. He glanced up. Above them, Tami scowled at the guy, her grip on her mangled racket turning her knuckles white.

Author Bio:

USA Today Best Seller, Nana Malone’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she “borrowed” from her cousin.

It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, in the meantime Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is.

Book Tour Grand Finale for
A Cowboy to Keep
By Karen Rock

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops, go back and check them out…

Launch – Note from the Author

Best of all, this novel is the prequel to my ROCKY MOUNTAIN COWBOYS series that starts November 1, 2017. THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN COWBOY series chronicles the lives and loves of Jack’s ranching family, the Cades (hot-tempered, passionate rough-riding rebels) and their neighbors, the Lovelands, (laconic, stubborn, gritty loners), with whom they’ve feuded for over a hundred years. They are loyal, strong and determined cowboys who work hard, play harder and love forever. I know you’ll fall in love with them as much as I have!

Christy’s Cozy Corners – Dani’s 10 Tips to Running a Dude Ranch

Howdy all! Dani Crawford, stable manager at the Mountain Sky Dude Ranch outside of Denver, Colorado has learned a lot on the job and she’s ready to share her tips to running a dude ranch…

1. Carefully plan your horse line-up. Keep horses that don’t like each other apart, pair the right horse with the right human and always put the gassy horse in the back- lol.

Rockin’ Book Reviews – Review

“This is a tale of secrets, judgement, redemption, mystery, suspense and romance. , . . This was a very enjoyable book to relax with.”

Katie’s Clean Book Collection – Excerpt

Jack rolled his eyes skyward and his chest rose and fell. “Ma’am. I have no quarrel with you. Let me have my gun and I’ll be on my way.”

Dani blew out a breath. “Kick it over here.” He did, and the Glock skidded to a stop at her feet. “Don’t move unless you want your head blown off.” At his nod, she snatched it up and straightened, her rifle still trained on the trespasser. “I could shoot you. It’s the law.”

“But you won’t.” He lowered his arms and crossed them.

Bookworm Nation – Review

“I really enjoyed this one. I I thought the plot and setting were a lot of fun. I also really enjoyed the characters of Dani and Jack.”

I Am A Reader – Things Bounty Hunters Hear

Jack’s been chasing criminals since bond jumpers gunned down his little brother two years ago. He wants retribution, but most of all he wants redemption since he blames himself for not protecting his sibling like he should have, as an older brother. Life on the road is hard, but he won’t quit until he takes as many lowlifes off the streets as possible so that no families have to suffer as his have. Here’s a sample of what he hears every day on the job:

1. “You’ve got the wrong guy.”

Nicole’s Book Musings – Excerpt

Dani’s stomach fluttered at Jack’s appreciative look, then he strode down the hill. When she hustled after him, he stopped at the base. “What are you doing?”

“Going with you.”

“Sorry, sweetheart, it’s too dangerous.”

With Love for Books – Review

“Karen Rock writes about a beautiful ranch with stunning horses situated in a former mining area. There are many places for a criminal to hide, both on and close to the premises, and while Jackson and Dani visit them because they’re looking for someone, I could still enjoy the vivid descriptions of the amazing countryside, a combination I liked a lot. A Cowboy to Keep is an original love story. It’s filled with suspense and at the same time it’s really romantic. I loved this fabulous story with many unexpected twists and turns.”

Reading Is My SuperPower – Interview

Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Karen: Hmmmm… there are so many good ones that I wish I had… I would love to fly. Sometimes I really, really wish I could make myself invisible. Also, it’d be fun to morph into different animals, like dolphins or eagles, and get to see their worlds. But, if I’m true to who I am, my superpower would be storytelling because I believe in the power of stories to uplift us and transport us from our everyday lives. I’m a big believer in hope and positivity and faith and I hope my books give that to my readers.

Urban Book Reviews – Review

“The book was intense. Sweet, hot, and intriguing. I couldn’t stop reading it. Karen Rock has created two characters that will never be forgotten. An emotional attachemwnt occurs once the book is read. Once, one reads this, it will be hard to let go. Addictive, well-written, and highly engaging. Overall, I highly recommend this romance to readers worldwide.”

The Silver Dagger Scriptorium – Jackson’s 10 Tips to Courting a Cowgirl

Howdy! Jack here. Tracking bandits is easier than chasing cowgirls. When I first lady eyes on Dani, my heart about stopped beating. Of course, she’d pulled a gun on me for snooping around the dude ranch, so that might have been a contributing factor. Still, I knew right then and there I wouldn’t rest until I’d swept her off her feet and into my arms. I don’t love often, but I love hard and I knew she was the only woman for me. Here are my tips on how best to court a strong, gutsy cowgirl like Dani:

1. Don’t leave home without your wranglers and your cowboy hat. And a little face scruff never hurt none, neither.

Hearts & Scribbles – Excerpt

“Thought you were waiting for my signal.”

Dani’s voice was breathy.

“If I waited any longer, I’d be drawing social security.”

“Ha-ha,” she said slowly, so Jack understood exactly how funny she thought him, and, contrarily, wouldn’t suspect that she really did find him amusing.

No more flirting.

Brooke Blogs – Review

“A Cowboy to Keep was such an enjoyable book. Between Dani’s past catching up to her, the chase for Smiley, and even more twists and turns, you will find yourself staying up late to finish this one. I liked the suspense and I really liked the romance. It was tender, sweet, and believable. If you like sweet, wholesome romance plus suspense, then you will enjoy A Cowboy to Keep by Karen Rock.”

Okie Dreams Book Reviews – Review

“If you’re looking for a terrific contemporary romance with a good dabble of suspense mixed in, pick up a copy of A Cowboy to Keep by Karen Rock. It’s a great read and the perfect prequel story to what promises to be a stellar new series: Rocky Mountain Cowboys.”

Falling Leaves – Excerpt

Jack. When he smiled, Dani couldn’t help smiling. When his face turned sad, something inside her broke a little. She wished she’d met him years ago, before she’d gone left instead of right, taken the wrong turns that kept her from ever traveling beside him.

But she had him for now and she’d make the most of it.

Paulette’s Papers – Jackson’s 10 Tips to Tracking Down a Criminal

Hey all. Jack here. I’ve been tracking bond-jumpers since my brother’s murderers skipped out on their court appearance. This cowboy’s picked up a few tips for tracking down criminals:

1. A little menace goes a long way in persuading reluctant witnesses to talk.

Getting Your Read On – Review

“In addition to romance, this book has a bit of danger, mystery and suspense to liven things up. . . . It’s hard to resist a good cowboy story!”

Thoughts of a Blonde – Excerpt

All her feelings for him—hot and beautiful in her heart—dissolved on her tongue, strange, new and inexpressible.

He twined his fingers in hers, his thumb circling the center of her palm, slowly, and Dani disintegrated.

Becky on Books – Interview

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

I’m a huge fan of westerns, especially ones with renegade heroes like Jack Cade. Those dark, conflicted cowboys tempt the good gal in all of us who hope to tame these strong, fierce men. I was also inspired by the idea that sometimes the person who most needs to forgive us for our past mistakes is ourselves. Both Jack and Dani have troubled pasts and their path to love requires them to confront, and forgive those mistakes before they can be ready for their happily-ever-after. I always want my characters to earn their happy endings and when Jack and Dani finally get there, it’s all the sweeter for the challenges they overcame.

Book Reviews – Review

“I loved this story by Karen Rock. . . . If you love cowboys, horses, and adventure, you will love A Cowboy to Keep.”

Heidi Reads… – Excerpt

And then he pulled back, his eyes on her, his expression a silent question she couldn’t answer. Instead, she reached up and kissed his scar, wanting him to know that it made him beautiful to her. How much he meant to her. How every atom of her wanted to be here with him.

He angled his head and kissed her once more, slowly and tenderly.

Fire and Ice Book Reviews – Review

“FANTASTIC!!! Another fantastic read by Karen Rock. This story not only had the chemistry between Dani and Jackson but had tons of twists and turns some that I didn’t see coming. “

Mel’s Shelves – Reasons to Vacation on a Dude Ranch

The first time I learned about dude ranches was in a funny movie titled CITY SLICKERS with Jack Palance, playing a tough as nails cowboy, and a three city boys, comedians Billy Crystal, Bruno Kirby and Daniel Stern, who are hopelessly out of their element after they sign on for a cattle drive. Watching the grandeur of the West, the freedom and sense of independence life on the range can give, I’ve always known two things:

1. I would someday visit and/or live out west and I would write a book set here.

Lola’s Reviews – Review

“If you’re looking for a great slow building romance with a well done, but subtle suspense element I would definitely recommend this book. There was so much I enjoyed about this from the realistic and interesting main character to the wonderful setting, the suspense element which kept me on my toes and wondering about people their motivations and some side characters that made the story complete. The romance feels real and these two were so great together. This might be my favorite book by this author yet and if I am correct this is the first book in a new series!”

Zerina Blossom’s Books – Interview

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

My favorite chapter is always the Happily-Ever-After chapter. I put my characters through quite a bit before we reach the ending and it makes the final scene the sweetest of all because we know that the hero and heroine have truly earned that joy. It’s that smiling through tears part of the book and I can’t wait to write those scenes!

A Note to Readers from Beverly Jenkins, Author of BREATHLESS (with a giveaway!)

Dear Readers,

This is the second book in the Rhine Trilogy and I do hope you enjoy it. With all the issues and heartache Portia carried inside, I knew it would be difficult for her to give her heart to someone, but Kent Randolph proved to be the man for the job, even if I didn’t know he would be her hero when the story began. Hope you’ll enjoy seeing Rhine and Eddy from Forbidden and, yes, they are still very much in love.

The Fontaine Hotel is loosely based on the Mountain View Hotel founded in Oracle, Arizona, in 1895 by Annie Box Neal and her husband William “Curly” Neal, who were both of African- American and Native-American descent. The Mountain View was a combination hotel and spa and catered not only to European royalty but to wealthy visitors from places like Russia, Australia, and China, too. Look them up.

The great Apache chief Geronimo surrendered on September 4, 1886, and was promptly declared a prisoner of war. He and his people eventually wound up in Florida along with the Apache scouts the army employed to hunt him down. He died at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in 1909. The Apache warrior Lozen, also captured in 1886, was sent to the barracks at Mount Vernon, Alabama, where she died of tuberculosis in 1887. Although her name has faded from America’s memory, her bravery and fearlessness remains legendary with her people.

I only touched briefly on African-American women and the fight for suffrage but hope to get back to it in depth sometime in the future. Until then, if you’d like to do some research on your own, here are two excellent sources:

African American Women and the Vote: 1837–1965 by Cynthia Neverdon-Morton, et al.

African American Women in the Struggle for the Vote: 1850–1920 by Rosalyn Terborg-Penn

Having the opportunity to create characters and stories that reflect my heritage as a woman of color is priceless. Representation matters.  Thanks again for the support and love. Thanks also for spreading the word about my books to everyone you know. It’s much appreciated.

Until next time, happy reading.

B.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

As manager of one of the finest hotels in Arizona Territory, Portia Carmichael has respect and stability-qualities sorely missing from her harsh childhood. She refuses to jeopardize that by hitching herself to the wrong man. Suitors are plentiful, but none of them has ever looked quite as tempting as the family friend who just rode into town…and none have looked at her with such intensity and heat.

Duchess. That’s the nickname Kent Randolph gave Portia when she was a young girl. Now she’s a stunning, intelligent woman-and Kent has learned his share of hard lessons. After drifting through the West, he’s learned the value of a place to settle down, and in Portia’s arms he’s found that and more. But convincing her to trust him with her heart, not just her passion, will be the greatest challenge he’s known-and one he intends to win…
