New Release Review and Giveaway! CONFESSIONS OF A FORMER PUCK BUNNY by Cindi Madsen (Taking Shots #4)

Today we have the stop for Cindi Madsen’s Confessions of a Former Puck Bunny. Check out this fantastic new romance and grab your copy today!

About Confessions of a Former Puck Bunny:

Confession #1: I used to be a puck bunny, but after a hockey player broke my heart, I gave up all things hockey. Now I’m just focused on finding a way to pass my math class so I can graduate college.

Confession #2: Ryder “Ox” Maddox’s deep, sexy voice sends fuzzy tingles through my entire body, and I’m powerless to stop it. Which is a big problem since the hot, surprisingly funny hockey player is my new math tutor.

Confession #3: I can’t stop thinking about how ripped Ryder is from all his hockey training, and how fun it’d be to cross lines with him.

Confession #4: I kissed a hockey player and I liked it.

Confession #5: If I’m not careful, I might relapse and fall for Ryder, and then I’ll be totally pucked.

Review:

OMG, I loved, loved, loved this book! Lindsay is totally my fictional sister-from-another-mister. We’re like twins with the editing, you can’t turn that stuff off and give us HEAs forever and math? Ugh! And Ryder? Don’t even get me started on that guy 🙂 Between his refusal to give up on Lindsay no matter how prickly she was or how many walls she threw up to his math whispering abilities to his excellent making-up-for-being-an-a-hole grand gesture (the placement of that paintball gun had me flinching in sympathy), the fact that he is a hockey player too is like mile-high icing piled on the best cake ever.

Because, hockey.

Although I’m sad that this is apparently the last book in the series (but why? There are other players on the team….Daniel could use an HEA, for example, subtle hint… ;)) I have to admit that Lindsay and Ryder struck exactly the right final note. Though you could absolutely read Confessions of a Former Puck Bunny as a standalone, do yourself a real favor and read the other three books too because these four couples are amazing. They’re great when they’re secondary characters meddling into their friends’ relationships, but they’re even better when they’re center stage in their own stories.

Plus…did I mention hockey?

Need I say more?

Lifestyles of the small-town famous

Forced to leave Nashville after a scandal, Savannah Walters has come home to Slippery Rock, Missouri, with a bruised ego and her singing career in jeopardy. As if that isn’t humiliating enough, on her way into town she’s rescued by her swoon-worthy childhood crush, Collin Tyler.

His hands are full running the family orchard and dealing with his delinquent teen sister, so Collin doesn’t need to get involved with someone as fiery and unpredictable as Savannah. But the intense attraction between them can’t be denied. And when disaster strikes, they’ll both be surprised by who’s still standing when the dust settles.

Review:

Such a good read!

It takes a while to figure out what exactly Savannah’s deal is–which is a bit frustrating at first, but once we have the whole story? It finally makes sense, and from that point on–all the feels. Seriously, there were tears. More than once. Between Savannah and her mom, Savannah and Collin, and Collin and his little sister Amanda, the relationships in this book just slay me. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next for the people of Slippery Rock–Levi, Savannah’s brother; Mara, Collin’s absent sister; James, the deputy sheriff; and Adam, their longtime friend who isn’t exactly left in a good spot at the end of this book…gah! How soon until book 2 comes out?

New Release and Giveaway! THE HEART OF A TEXAS COWBOY by Linda Broday (Men of Legend #2)

Title: The Heart of a Texas Cowboy
Author: Linda Broday
Series: Men of Legend, #2
ISBN: 9781492630203
Pub date: May 2, 2017
Genre: Historical Western Romance

Three Brothers. One Oath.

No Compromises.

The MEN of LEGEND

The Cowboy

One bullet is all it takes to shatter Houston Legend’s world. He swore he’d never love again, but with the future of the Lone Star Ranch on the line, he finds himself at the altar promising to love and cherish a woman he’s never met—a woman whose vulnerable beauty touches his heart.

All Lara Boone wants is a name for her baby. She never expected to fall in love with her own husband—or any man—after the heartache she’s endured. Yet when her troubled past catches up with them, Houston will move heaven and earth to protect his bride…and discover depths to a marriage of convenience neither realized could be theirs.

Excerpt:

With night wrapped around her like a cloak, Lara hummed while she washed the dishes and put everything away.

Houston sat on the ground with Gracie, his back against his saddle. The babe lay on his chest with his hand patting the small back. He caught Lara looking and winked as boldly as some scoundrel. Heat rose to her cheeks. She lowered her gaze and made quick work of the dishes.

“Do you want me to take Gracie to her bed?” Lara asked, joining him.

“If you can pry open her fist to get my vest out of it. For such a little thing, she’s sure got a grip.”

Houston was so near his soft breath fanned her cheek. Her pulse raced. This man she’d married invaded every thought. He’d shown kindness and caring and brought hope back from the grave where she’d buried it.

He laid a hand on her arm. “You’ll be back?”

“Yes. I won’t be long.”

“I’ll only be in camp a little while,” Houston said, yawning. “Have to spell the other drovers.” At her questioning glance, he explained, “Everyone shares guard duty, me included.”

She nodded and hurried to lay Gracie in her crib next to her crib beside the chuck wagon. With her precious daughter sleeping soundly, she returned to the fire to find no sign of Houston. Her heart sank with disappointment. She’d missed him, missed her goodnight kiss that he’d begged for.

Houston called quietly from the deep shadows. “Over here, Lara.”

Following his voice, Lara discovered him leaning against the trunk of a mesquite tree. Rays from the full moon lightened the dark brown strands nestling against his collar, adding glints of silver.

“I didn’t want to take a chance on us being interrupted so I walked out here,” he explained.

Lara wet her lips. “I thought you’d changed your mind.” That he didn’t want to kiss a woman so scarred.

“Not a chance, lady,” he growled low and pushed away from the tree. “It’s all that’s been on my mind since you agreed.”

When she moved to him, he opened his arms. She walked into his embrace as though it was door and pleasure awaited there. Inhaling the scented air, she laid her head against the hard wall of his chest. She wanted to stay there forever.

Houston lightly rested his chin on the top of her head. “I’m real glad you came on this drive. Nights can get lonely out here.”

His deep voice vibrated inside her. It was like he became part of her. “I’m glad I did too. Even though I had to work to convince you.”

“Yeah, well, I’m a stubborn fool.”

He put a finger under her chin and lifted her face. Without a word, he lowered his mouth. The minute his warm lips touched hers, Lara had to clutch his arm to keep from falling. Her heartbeat pounded as though trying to keep up with the blood racing through her veins.

A hot, demanding, achiness swept over her. She needed this man and at the moment didn’t think she could live without him. Nor did she want to try.

With a low cry, he placed his large hands under her jaw and deepened the kiss, sending a series of quickenings into her stomach similar to the ones she felt when Gracie curled in her womb. Maybe these stirrings signaled life much in the same way her baby’s movements did to let her know she was alive and couldn’t wait to be born.

Maybe she was being reborn.

Maybe she could forget the past and start fresh.

Maybe this was what she’d waited so long for.

As she leaned into him and gripped Houston’s vest, pleasure like she’d never felt swirled inside her. She clung to him afraid if she let go, he’d vanish and she’d discover it was a dream.

Could this be tiny stirrings of love?

Lara suddenly pushed away. No it wasn’t love because that didn’t exist. Not for her. It was too dangerous to believe in love. To believe she had anything to give any man.

What’s wrong, Lara?” Houston gently pushed back her hair. “Did I do something to upset or frighten you? I shouldn’t have grabbed you like that.”

“You did nothing wrong.” It was her. She almost let herself believe that someone could love her. One look at her reflection showed the impossibility of such a thing. “I’m sorry,” she murmured brokenly.

Through tears, she stumbled back to the light of the campfire, escaping all that brought pain.

The past.

Herself.

An impossible future.

Escaping everything. If only it was that easy.

Houston stole up behind her and touched her shoulder. “Talk to me. I want to understand.”

She owed him some explanation. Impatiently dashing away the tears, she turned and let anger spill. “It’s not you, Houston. It’s me. I’m broken. Too broken to fix. You can’t repair something that’s missing the pieces. Blackstone took a lot more than….” she paused, “He stole….”

“Your soul,” he supplied quietly.

Tour Grand Finale and Giveaway! THE FIREMAN’S SON by Tara Taylor Quinn (Where Secrets Are Safe #11)

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Book Tour Grand Finale for
THE FIREMAN’S SON
By Tara Taylor Quinn

We hope you enjoyed the tour and getting a look at this author’s 80th release with Harlequin! If you missed any of the stops, go check them out…

Launch – Note from the Author

The Fireman’s Son is a story particularly close to my heart. I can tell you from firsthand knowledge that women suffer as Faye did more often than you’d ever expect. I can also say, unequivocally, that with love, kindness, and the right man, women like Faye do find pure joy again. Abuse is horrible. But that doesn’t mean the other side of abuse has to be. The world is filled with survivors. Women who know and value their strengths. Who reach out to other women who’ve been where they’ve been and are struggling to get where they are. Women who care.

Please, come on in to The Lemonade Stand. Join us. As a collective group, we’re going to make the world a beautiful, safe place. One heart at a time.

underneath the covers – Excerpt

CHAPTER ONE, Part 1

REESE BRISTOW WOULD not normally race to the scene of a small fire on the beach in the middle of the night. He was the newly appointed Santa Raquel Fire Chief. One truck of junior firefighters could handle the call half asleep.

Still, there he was, in jeans and a T-shirt, racing up the beach behind men in full gear carrying hoses he hoped they wouldn’t need to use.

deal sharing aunt – Guest Post

In The Fireman’s Son, one particular part came from a very particular place. Faye Walker is a paramedic. I’ve never been a paramedic. I couldn’t just become one. So I married one. Ha, ha, not really. I mean, I really did marry one, but not to write Faye’s story.

Thoughts of a Blonde – Review

“Emotionally raw and gut wrenching! You feel sorry for the child for what he’s been through, and as secrets and questions unravel, you find yourself feeling so sad that such little things caused such a monumental life change for all of them. Really connectible characters who we hope can find the peace they all need.”

Brooke Blogs – Guest Post

Love is the most powerful force. I’ve always known this. I believe it still. Love will be the final victor – no matter what. It’s the best part of us. The deepest and strongest part of us. If we could all just let love work its magic, trust that which we can’t see, and be able to mute the world’s interferences and cerebral messages, mute the greed and jealousy and insecurities, love would deliver us to the happiness we all crave.

EskieMama & Dragon Lady Reads – Review

“This story was far by more the most intriguing story I have read, it deals with so much of what is going on in our society then normaly does in a book.Reese Bristow is in a conundrum now, the woman who broke his heart in college is now back and is his new EMT. There are more surprises in the book that, leave you speculating how this will unfold…”

Nicole’s Book Musings – Guest Post

Faye and Reese have to stay in shape to do their jobs. They have to pass physical fitness tests. And when they’re at the station, on call, they can’t get what they need by skating around the trucks. With them, I had to go back to the treadmill, the weights – the dreaded gym. It’s at the firehouse. So…I did what I had to do…I mentioned that they went there – and I left them at the door – skating off and coming back to get them when we were both done. That’s why you won’t find any scenes in this book written inside that gym. I apologize ahead of time…

Angels with Attitude Book Reviews – Excerpt

CHAPTER ONE, Part 2

“I thought you’d at least call,” she was saying. Making no sense at all. “I wouldn’t take the job until Brandt assured me that you’d seen my file and approved the employment…”

Last he’d heard, Faye Browning had been in her second year of a four-year nursing program at UC Berkeley.

He’d been at Southern Cal in LA.

“You did know, didn’t you?” Her voice trailed off.

His horror must have been showing.

Celticlady’s Reviews – Guest Post

We just passed tax time and my preparer once told me, everything in my life is deductible because it all goes into my books. She reads my books. And while I don’t deduct even close to ‘everything’, her statement stuck with me because she’s right. My life goes into my books.

Becky on Books – Review

“All three of the main characters here–Faye, Reese, and Elliott, Faye’s eight-year-old son–have been through so much before the story even begins. Watching them deal with the implications of the past, not to mention the new tension and drama that their present brings them, makes for a truly engrossing read. I literally couldn’t put this one down until I’d seen them get to their HEA!”

beck valley books – Excerpt

Book Excerpt – CHAPTER ONE, Part 3

SO…THAT WENT WELL. Faye’s sarcasm rang loud and clear in her mind as she trekked across the beach with her brand-new coworkers.

She was on a mission. Had a very clear plan. She’d considered every step in-depth prior to implementation. She’d allowed for every eventuality. Taken measures to ensure that nothing went wrong.

Kindle and Me – Review

“This story just breaks my heart! And I wanted a happily ever after for all of them! If you like real stories of families with abuse issues and children of those abused, shelters, fires, firemen, great counselors, second chances then this might be for you!”

Book Lover in Florida – Guest Post

In The Fireman’s Son, in a particularly difficult scene, Reese can’t take Faye inside. He has to head out to his own little paradise in his backyard. His piece of nature includes the beach and the ocean, but the physical effects to him are the same. It could be that as the author of the book, I took him out there because it was where I’d need to be. One could be a practical thinker and insist that that was the case. One might even be right. I don’t believe it, though. I think that nature is a natural healer, purposely there for all of us to draw upon.

Harlie’s Books – Review

“Overall, Ms. Quinn tackles a hard subject and hits it head on. She doesn’t sugarcoat it with her characters but let’s her characters speak for themselves. This series is fast becoming one of my all time favorites. Her stories in this series just keep getting better and better. I can’t wait to see in future books how Elliot is doing and how the Lemonade Stand is and the characters that surround it. Bravo, Ms. Quinn. You did it again.”

Secrets are burning out of control

After she broke his heart in college, Faye Walker is the last person fire chief Reese Bristow ever expected to see again, especially as his new EMT. But that’s not Reese’s only surprise. Faye has an eight-year-old son, Elliott, whose counseling at The Lemonade Stand shelter is her first priority.

It’s nearly impossible to accept that she had a child with another man—and married that man—right after their breakup. Trusting Faye won’t be easy. Especially when she reveals a secret about the boy that might tear them apart for good.

A Conversation with Michele Summers, Author of SWEET SOUTHERN TROUBLE (with a giveaway!)

Welcome, Michele! What 5 things should readers know about you?

Hmmmm, okay, here goes:

  1. I’m very stubborn. Yep. Like a dog with a bone stubborn. I dig my heels in and won’t give an inch when I think I’m right. According to my kids, I always think I’m right. But in my stubborn defense, I will apologize if proven wrong. Not happily, but I do it anyway.

  1. I hate to be photographed. No, hate is probably too mild. I detest, loathe, abhor, (take your pick) being photographed. It literally pains me to pose for pictures. Not sure why, but it probably stems from my childhood, standing with my eight siblings for what felt like days while my dad fiddled with lights and cameras to take our family photos. An exercise in complete torture. Any pictures you might see of me have been taken under extreme duress. 😉

  1. I’m fascinated with power tools. Recently I gave my kitchen a facelift by painting my wood cabinets and tile backsplash, but it needed to be sanded before painting and I couldn’t possibly do it all by hand. After buying my first power tool, an electric sander, I was hooked. (Kitchen turned out fabulous, I might add!) Next up: Circular Saw!!!

  1. I’m basically a homebody even though I love to travel. But these days it takes a lot for me to pack my bags and head to parts unknown or otherwise. I enjoy spending time in my home and love it when both my kids are around for family dinners and hanging out. Don’t get me wrong, if someone offered me tickets to Paris or Florence, I’d blow this Popsicle stand, but not for long…because there’s no place like home.

  1. I love basketball. Let me restate that: I love college Specifically UNC basketball as in 2017 National Champions basketball!! I’ve been watching my Tarheels since way before Michael Jordan (GOAT) made his first jumper in high school. As a child, I used to shoot baskets with my two brothers, and we’d fight over which UNC player we were pretending to be. I taught my son how to shoot a free throw and used to beat him at the game Horse. (He was probably five at the time…I’m very competitive. Don’t judge.) I’ve seen more national championship games than I care to count. And probably know more college basketball stats than most coaches. And like a true Tarheel who bleeds Carolina blue, I’ve proudly passed this passion down to my son and daughter. It’s hard to live in North Carolina without catching the basketball fever. GO HEELS!

I’m with you on #2. Pictures are the worst!

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

Mostly my imagination. Sweet Southern Trouble was the very first book I wrote and prior to writing it, I used to play around with different scenarios in my head, wondering if I had the nerve to actually write a book. At the time, my son talked football non-stop (still does) and I started asking him questions about different quarterbacks and coaches and he inspired me with his answers. Learning how hard these guys worked to play ball, I thought it would be funny to see how a big, tough football player would deal with a snack-sized kindergarten teacher. On the outside they appear as complete opposites, but they discover common ground as fierce competitors.

Love it! You never know where inspiration would come from 🙂

How long have you been writing and what or who inspired you to start?

I’ve been writing for about ten years. In the beginning, I wrote on the sly…late at night while everyone slept. No one person inspired me to start writing. I basically challenged myself to see if I could do it.

That works too—awesome!

What are you working on right now?

A fun new series set in Miami about a family of brothers, all professional athletes in different sports, all strong-willed, stubborn, and damaged in some way by the sins of their father. And all coming up against their biggest challenge: protecting their hearts from the women who butt heads and lock lips with them and who keep tempting them to fall hopelessly in love. Look for the Silver Starrs series in late 2017.

Sounds great! Can’t wait 🙂

What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte because who doesn’t love a strong woman who won’t compromise her beliefs or convictions? Not even for the only man she ever loved. I’ve read this book at least once a year, ever since I was fourteen and my older sister read it aloud to me, while sitting on the beach one summer. My first romance. This one never gets old.

I agree! Every time I read it again, I notice something new.

If you had to sell your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

What happens when a snack-sized, trash-talkin’ kindergarten teacher competes with a smokin’ hot, tough football coach? A real throw down!

Perfect!

Thanks for having me! These questions were lots of fun!

Thank you for coming, Michele! Good luck with SWEET SOUTHERN TROUBLE—I can’t wait to read it!

New Release Review and Giveaway! BETTING THE BAD BOY by Stefanie London (Behind the Bar #3)

He’s an expert at breaking the rules…

BETTING THE BAD BOY
Behind the Bar #3
Stefanie London
Releasing May 8th, 2017
Entangled Lovestruck

Self-confessed perfectionist Paige Thomas isn’t used to failing. But when a critical error in romantic judgment sends all her big city career dreams crashing down, she scrambles to find a job—any job—to make ends meet.

Noah Reid may as well have “trust issues” tattooed on his forehead. Being raised in the foster system didn’t give him a positive outlook on relationships, but now he’s looking after his best friend’s bar for one month, and he can’t do it
alone.

Things get steamy when Noah hires Paige, but she’s determined not to repeat her mistakes and she bets Noah that she can keep her hands to herself while they’re working together. Too bad for her, Noah is an expert at breaking the
rules…

She held the blindfold while trying to ignore the flutter of excitement in her stomach. Her fingers toyed with the elasticated band meant to hold the mask in place.

“Both partners are going to get a turn at being blindfolded,” Libby said from the front of the room. “Between yourselves, pick who’s going to go first.”

Noah looked down at her, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. He ran a hand along his jaw, catching the reddish-gold bristles of his burgeoning beard. For a moment, Paige was totally captured with the idea of how the bristles might feel on her skin. Would they be smooth or rough? Would she shriek if he brushed them along her inner thigh?

“What do you say, new girl?” He cocked his head. “Would you rather do the blindfolding or be blindfolded?”

At that point she would have been happy to go all in— blindfolded, tied up, and held down.

Holy crap, would you listen to yourself? This is a work function, not a goddamn re-creation of Fifty Shades.

“Blindfolded,” she squeaked, thrusting the mask into his hands and spinning so quickly that she almost lost her footing.

“You know, I’ve never done this before.” His hand steadied her, the reassuring warmth of his touch seeping into her skin. Her bones felt like jelly.

“Blindfolded someone?” she asked, cringing at how shaky her voice sounded.

“Ah, no. I meant the taste test.” He chuckled as he slipped the mask over her eyes.

Heat rushed up to Paige’s cheeks. Of course he meant the taste test. What an idiot she was. Just because her brain was earning an R-rating tonight didn’t mean his was, too. She fought back a tremor as he brushed some loose hairs from her neck so he could adjust the strap on the mask.

Everything went dark, and Paige gripped the edge of the table for support.

Warm breath whispered over her ear, and she could tell he’d leaned in a little closer. The scent of coffee and faded cologne tempted her to turn her head toward the source.

“I’ve definitely blindfolded someone before, but it wasn’t for a taste test.”
Her breath hitched, and she was grateful that she’d had the presence of mind to hold on to something.

“Oh.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, that’s what she said.”

Holy. Freaking. Shit.

So cute!

I loved both Noah and Paige, and the bet motif was abso-freaking adorable. I can’t imagine why I haven’t read the other two books in this series–yes, it worked just fine as a standalone, but still–but you’d better believe I’m going to soon. I’m really going to enjoy watching Noah be all smug in his non-commitment-dom, knowing exactly what is coming in his future 🙂

Synopsis:

The heart’s a resilient beast…

Professionally, the FBI team of Aidan “Irish” Talley and Jameson “Whiskey” Walker is as good as it gets, closing cases faster than any team at the Bureau. Personally, it’s a different story. Aidan’s feelings for Jamie scare the hell out of him: he won’t risk losing another love no matter how heart-tripping the intimacy between them. And loss is a grim reality with the terrorist Renaud still on their trail, leaving a pile of bodies in his wake.

Going undercover on a new case gets them out of town and off the killer’s radar. They’re assigned to investigate an identity theft ring involving a college basketball team in Jamie’s home state, where Jamie’s past makes him perfect for the role of coach. But returning to the court brings more than old memories.

As secrets and shocking betrayals abound, none may be more dangerous than the one Jamie’s been keeping: a secret about the death of Aidan’s husband that could blow his partner’s world apart and destroy forever the fragile bonds of trust and love building between them.

Excerpt:

“I know our schedule’s fucked, but that face of yours is awfully grim.”

Startling at the full-blast Irish accent, Jamie’s head shot up and the phone slipped from his fingers, clattering to the ground. Pick it up, some instinct ordered, but he was too busy losing the rest of his fucking mind. The veneer of calm shattered and any hope of patience took a flying leap out the window.

Because standing in front of him was his stylishly dressed partner, a messenger bag over one shoulder, a coat tossed over the other, and silver-rimmed aviators nestled in waves of auburn hair. More times than he could count, Jamie had imagined Aidan with his natural hair color, and damn if the reality didn’t surpass each and every one of his fantasies.

Mouth dry, heart racing, cheeks burning, Jamie’s fingers twitched with the urge to weave through the long red strands. Reaching down instead, he grabbed his phone, held it between his palms, and wedged his clasped hands between his knees, forestalling his impulse. He tried to force out a “hello,” but his brain refused to cooperate, all the blood in his body having raced south where his jeans became painfully tight.

Fuck.

He was gone. So far gone. Past casual, past a crush, past simple attraction.

This was Aidan, sans disguises, and Jamie wanted him more than he’d ever wanted anything.

“Is it that bad a dye job?” Aidan asked, interrupting his mental breakdown.

“Ai—” he started, only to be corrected with a brogue-laced, “Ian.”

Jamie blinked, reminded that this was a disguise. It sure as hell didn’t feel like one. “I wasn’t expecting this.” His eyes raked over Aidan again, taking it all in. Dressed in jeans and a navy V-neck sweater, the dark blues set off his pale skin, the freckles, his autumn eyes, that hair…

“Fuck,” he muttered out loud.

Aidan shifted on his feet in front of him. “I said I was making a few more changes.”

“Yeah, but this—” he spread his arms wide, the motion totally inadequate “—is more than a fucking few.”

Their gazes locked, heat sparking. “Problem, Jamie?” Aidan’s eyes flickered down to the very obvious problem.

“You gotta stop that.”

He dropped his messenger bag and shrugged the coat off his shoulder. “Stop what?”

“Saying my name in that accent.”

“Mr. Walker, then,” he said with a smirk.

Way too smooth.

Jamie propped his elbows on this knees and covered his face with his hands. “God no,” he groaned. “Not that either.”

Aidan laughed as the buzzer went off on the conveyor behind them.

Leather smacked the backs of Jamie’s hands, and he snagged Aidan’s coat before it hit the ground.

Leather?

“Cover that up,” Aidan said, eyeing his crotch. “And get yourself together. Debrief in the car.” Turning, he headed for the spinning luggage carousel, giving Jamie a prime view of his sinfully fitted jeans.

Get himself together…

Yeah, right.

Review:

I enjoyed the suspense of Cask Strength–definitely had me on the edge of my seat, especially for the last 20% or so–couldn’t put it down! Though Irish and Whiskey are mainly dealing with their new undercover case here, a major plot thread from book one ( Single Malt ) is also still a pretty big deal (and continues to be into the next book) so if you haven’t read the first book, you’re definitely going to be behind. I liked both Jamie (Whiskey) and Aidan (Irish) a lot and loved them together, though Aidan’s behavior for much of the book was pretty frustrating. It was more understandable when we saw things from his POV, but still…hopefully they’ll manage to stay in the place they are at the end of this book and not make a backward slide relationship-wise like they did between 1 and 2.

Review:

What an emotional ride!

All three of the main characters here–Faye, Reese, and Elliott, Faye’s eight-year-old son–have been through so much before the story even begins. Watching them deal with the implications of the past, not to mention the new tension and drama that their present brings them, makes for a truly engrossing read. I literally couldn’t put this one down until I’d seen them get to their HEA!

My only real…issue? I don’t want to say “complaint” because it’s definitely not that strong…is that their issues were so real and so all-encompassing that the romance part of the book is really only the last less than ten percent of it. There’s angst galore throughout, of course, given their pasts and the secrets that they’ve both been keeping for so long, but seeing Faye and Reese together doesn’t really happen until the very end, and when it does, it comes really quickly. I would love to see more of them (and Elliott!) as they navigate through the no-doubt not-always-smooth waters that lay ahead for them.

So hopefully they’ll make some longish appearances in future series books? 🙂

The Fireman’s Son, like the other books in this series that I’ve read so far, would work fine as a standalone. Other series characters play a role here, but if you haven’t read their stories (yet!) you’ll do just fine.

Excerpt:

Whatever natural tendency toward hope Anjeline once possessed had manifested itself into something harder on her face. Her eyes were far away, like she had thoughts on bigger things than just freedom. “This isn’t like your books,” she said as though Rebel were naive. “They’re stories that know nothing about life. People are thornier than what those things tell you. Good doesn’t always win. Light doesn’t always burn away the darkness.”

Rebel pressed her lips into a hard line. “Maybe it’s you who knows nothing about people. Darkness exists because light casts a shadow. That’s life…painful and beautiful all at the same time.” Books might have not told her everything about magic, but they taught her how to see it in all things.

Anjeline’s lips twitched. “Painful but beautiful. Sounds more like human love.”

“Now that, I wouldn’t know,” she said sarcastically, but she meant it. She took a cold breath, feeling for her pendant resting on her chest. There was a black void in her heart, where the love of a parent, the love of anyone, had never occupied.

Golden eyes met hers, Anjeline contemplating her with that look. “You’ve always been without kin?” Rebel nodded, turning aside from the fascinated gaze roaming over her. “So, you’ve never been loved?”

The question wasn’t just about family. Rebel shrunk from those words, unable to stop from gravitating toward the ones living in the back of her mind. Believing herself, maybe, to not be worthy of it, or anything good. That black void had yawned so wide she used to think gathering stolen treasures could fill it. She used to put rocks under her pillow, wishing for them to turn into diamonds. But she was a book no one wanted to open. A riddle no one dared to answer. A lost girl no one desired to find.

Her heart was tired of not being useful to anyone— especially herself.

She was tired of being a captive to her own flesh. With a shake of her head, she didn’t reply. But as Anjeline gazed at her with that look, as though something tied them together, her chest hummed with…what, exactly? She tried willing it away but it spread deeper. She rubbed at her bruises, as if calming the ones within. Her numb hands shook, and she rummaged in the satchel for her pills. Anjeline persisted to stare, unbothered by the cold. Lucky her. “Stop staring at me,” she said.

Anjeline clicked her tongue. “You could just ask me.”

“For what?”

“For warmth.”

Rebel glanced up in both sheepishness and stubbornness. Taking that for an invitation, Anjeline moved closer. “I’m fine…”

“I can hear your teeth rattling.”

“I’m…”

Anjeline put a finger against Rebel’s lips. “Shh. If you’re frozen, neither of us will get our wish.” The light in her palm danced, and she placed a hand atop Rebel’s.

The air throbbed between them. It crackled and purred, and Rebel startled as her blood hummed at the touch. Wisps of sultry light danced across her arms, snaking around her legs and torso in a shroud of warmth.

New Release and Giveaway! CURSED by Jennifer Chance (Gowns & Crowns #5)

Synopsis:

When the prince she was supposed to marry falls for someone else, Edeena Saleri is done with Garronia’s courts, crowns, and family curses. She grabs her sisters and escapes to the nobility-free coast of South Carolina, USA.

Refuge isn’t anything like it’s supposed to be, however. The family’s island vacation home now borders a singles’ retreat, which Edeena’s sisters embrace all too eagerly. Worse, the private protection firm Edeena hires is run by the most infuriating man she’s ever met–a rough-hewn, dark-eyed, charismatic charmer named, of course, Prince. He’s not a royal and he’s nowhere near noble, so there’s no way he can break the family curse. And yet…

Vincent “Prince” Rallis has spent his whole life justifying his name. The son of hardworking immigrant parents, he’s hustled for every dime, finally building a personal security firm with the muscle and grit to live up to its promises. He’s used to keeping his cool, but when the high-strung, high-class Edeena shuts him down despite her obvious interest, pride demands he fight for her–even if he has to track her back to her glittering court to prove his point. Only once Prince arrives in the seaside kingdom of Garronia, he finds his troubles are just beginning.

Sometimes love in Garronia can be magic. And sometimes you’re just Cursed.

Review:

A sweet romance!

Cursed has a slow start–there’s a lot of ominous grumbling about the “curse” which admittedly I might have just skimmed through, because I just wanted to get to the good stuff, which would explain why it seemed like they were making a big deal out of…well, not very much (for a cursed family, they sure seemed to be doing okay, honestly) but after about 40% or so things started to pick up. Vince and Edeena were very cute together–her determination to sacrifice herself for her sisters got to be a bit much at times, but every time Vince managed to get her out of her own head for a few minutes it was easy for the reader to forget all the drama as well. And the his big romantic gesture? Makes everything that came before it pale by comparison 🙂

Though it’s fifth in the Gowns & Crowns series, it’s almost a spin-off of the original four, and would work fine as a standalone. The H/h from the other books make appearances, but it’s not necessary to have read their books…yet ;)…to enjoy this one.
