Exclusive Excerpt:

Colt banged his fist against the door, fear and the smallest bit of hope punching through him. “Answer the fucking door,” he snarled. “Open, or I kick it in.”

“Maybe you should take it down a notch.” Next to him, Brooks shoved an agitated hand through his hair, his Stetson held loosely at his side.

“And maybe you should be freaking out more.” One of their best friends had been holed up in his home for weeks, refusing to talk to anyone, to see anyone. Colt didn’t know exactly what his friend was going through, but he’d lost a lot of damn friends in the sandbox and the only woman he’d ever loved had died too. Something he couldn’t think about right now. He couldn’t focus on his own pain when he could help his friend, when he had a damn purpose.

Mercer had recently lost his wife, and the man wasn’t handling it. The guy had been in love with Mary Grace since he was fifteen. They’d been each other’s world. And two months ago she’d been killed in Mexico, a victim of cartel violence. Allegedly.

Colt hadn’t been in love with Skye since he was a kid, but eight months with her sure felt like a lifetime. Hell, when she died it felt like he’d lost part of himself. The only part that mattered. He had to force himself out of bed every day, to shove back the emptiness. So on one level, he understood how Mercer felt. He shoved that thought right back inside where it belonged and ignored it. He couldn’t fix his own problem, but he could help out Mercer.

Panic swelled through Colt as the seconds ticked by without any response from inside—until he heard cursing on the other side of the door. Good. If his friend was cursing, he was alive. A solid minute later the lock snicked loudly as it twisted open.

Colt grabbed the handle and shoved it open, pushing past his best friend in case he tried to slam the door closed in his face.

Mercer, wearing boxers and nothing else, had grown a full black beard and his dark eyes were glassy. “What the hell are you doing here this early?”

“First, it’s two o’clock in the afternoon. Second…” Colt hauled off and punched him right in the nose. He needed to wake Mercer the hell up. Violence was pretty much the only way to do that now.

“Ah, hell,” Brooks muttered as Mercer flew back and fell on his ass with a grunt.

He held a hand to his nose, looking more alert than he had in two months as he glared up at Colt and Brooks. “What the hell, man?” His voice was muffled as he tried to stop the bleeding.

“I believe this is called an intervention,” Colt said, stepping into the foyer, cringing at the stench. “God, it smells like old pizza and cow crap in here. Mary Grace would kick your ass if she saw you living like this.”

“Don’t say her name!” Mercer shoved to his feet, letting his hand drop. Blood dripped down his face as he snarled at Colt. His teeth were toothpaste commercial white against his dark brown skin. Right now he looked like a rabid wolf baring his teeth at them.

“I’ll say her name if I want.” Yeah, he knew he was being harsh, but this was what Mercer needed. He needed to feel something, to wake the hell up. And making Mercer angry was the only way Colt knew how. Because the guy sure wasn’t going to talk about his fucking feelings. He needed to get out of this rabbit hole he’d let himself fall into. “We all lost her. Every single one of us.”

Most days Colt couldn’t believe she was gone. They’d all grown up together, and in his case, he’d been friends with Mary Grace since they were five years old. She was like a sister to Colt. Hell, he was still holding on to the hope that she wasn’t actually gone. It was why he was about to get on a plane in two hours and see if the tip he’d received was right. But first he had to make sure one of his best friends didn’t do something stupid while he was gone.

“Mary Grace.”

“Ah, hell,” Brooks said again, clearly not going to intervene. Just muttering his standard curse.

“Fuck you,” Mercer snapped, taking a step toward Colt.

That was it. Get angry, he silently willed his childhood friend. Mercer needed anger to replace the grief. God, or at least mute it. Just for a week. That was all Colt needed. Because if Mary Grace was alive, he was bringing her home to his best friend. He just couldn’t give Mercer the hope she was alive. Because if he did and it turned out she wasn’t… It would destroy him. “Mary. Grace.”

Mercer rushed at him like a bull.

Review:

Oh, I really enjoyed this one!

Katie Reus is a new author to me–I’ve been meaning to read her for a while, and figured a brand new series (Redemption Harbor) would be a great place to start 🙂

It did not disappoint!

Resurrection introduces us to Colt, a CIA agent who has been somewhat estranged from his father but has made his own family by choice from a group of close friends, many of whom he’s known since childhood. He’s so tight with them all that Skye, his last partner who also became much more to him than a coworker, knew all of them by name even though she had to fake her own death before ever meeting them in person…and then risked it all to save one of them, for him.

Okay, I know that all sounds kind of complicated. But I promise it all makes sense the way Ms. Reus writes it–and is a heck of a lot of fun to read, too!

Colt and Skye have great chemistry together, and the back and forth between these two is fantastic as well. We meet all of the group members here–some of them more than others–but it’s enough to see that this is going to be a great series. We’re left with some really strong indicators about what’s coming for book two, and I for one can’t wait for its release!

Rating: 4 stars / A-

Publication Date: February 21, 2017
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

He thought he lost her decades ago.

Half-demon, half-dragon shifter Ian McCabe is hellbent on getting back the only woman he’s ever loved. When Fiona O’Riley kicked him out of her life decades ago, he thought she was gone for good. Now that she’s back, nothing will stop him from claiming her. But she wants nothing to do with him—or his family.

She’ll do anything to save him.

Fiona knows that Ian is the only male for her. The only way to keep him alive is to stay away from him. But when tragedy strikes and they discover a wicked agenda for the mass murder of humans, they must work together to take down the enemies that threaten everyone. But there’s so much more on the line. As their undeniable desire intensifies, they’re faced with an unbearable choice. If Fiona and Ian succumb to their temptation, mating could be the last thing they ever do.

Excerpt:

“I swear to all that is holy,” Finn growled in front of Ian as he stalked across the dance floor. “You and I are coming to blows later.”

Ian ignored the Alpha. Ignored everything but Fiona, who was staring at him from across the room in shock and maybe a little horror. The knife in his chest twisted at the sight.

He’d come to Bo’s club to find a spot so he could simply get another glimpse of Fiona without being seen. He’d known she was meeting Finn here in a couple hours. Apparently she’d arrived early.

When Finn had actually told him to leave, tried to order him away? Yeah…he might have burned a few cars in the parking lot to ash. No one was going to keep him from Fiona.

He was aware that his behavior was insane. He didn’t care. He’d committed to this and wouldn’t back down now. His demon half could be such an asshole and there was no way in hell he’d been able to simply not show up when he’d learned Fiona would be here.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Rory and Liberty stand. When Fiona broke his gaze, as if she was looking for someone—her mate?— he glanced at his brother. Whatever Ian’s expression was, it was clear enough that no one better mess with him now. Rory took Liberty’s hand and moved away from the booth, his expression grim.

Ian tuned them both out as he and Finn reached Fiona—who was looking a lot like a dragon caught in headlights.

Finn cleared his throat. “Fiona O’Riley, I’m Finn Stavros. Officially.” The Alpha held out a hand, his actions perfectly polite.

Ian still growled low in his throat. He’d never liked anyone touching Fiona. Not even a happily mated male like Finn. Right now he wanted to slice off the Alpha’s hand. Fiona looked the same, but different. It was…strange. Still incredibly tall and beautiful, her dark hair was longer than he remembered and was free of any restraints as it flowed down over her unfortunately covered breasts. Not that he wanted another male to see her, but he remembered what she looked like naked. Remembered every single inch,

Excerpt:

Did you do what I told you to?

Isa shook her head as she read Mara’s text, a smile tugging at her lips. A man stepped up next to her, joining the crowd of people waiting for the elevator.

Her fingers flew across the screen. Yes, weirdo. You’re the only woman I know who would order me to dress sexy when going to a meeting with said woman’s own husband.

Mara had called her this morning and ordered her to wear something designed to make a man’s tongue fall out of his mouth. She hadn’t actually done what Mara had said because this was a professional environment, but she’d dressed up a little more than normal.

You’ll thank me later, came Mara’s responding text.

Is this about who I’m meeting with today? You know I don’t mix business and pleasure. So even if her new partner was sexy as sin it wouldn’t matter. He might as well be sexless. She didn’t have any interest in anyone, anyway. Not since… She swallowed hard, shutting that thought down.

“You look really familiar,” the man next to her said.

Since Mara hadn’t responded Isa tucked her phone into her purse and gave the man a neutral smile. When she looked at him, however, she realized she had seen him somewhere. The memory of that ‘meeting’ was disgusting. “I don’t think so,” she murmured. Yeah, she really didn’t want to talk to this guy.

“No, I’m really good with faces and I’m certain we’ve met before.” He watched her carefully, looking at her as if he was trying to decide if he’d seen her naked or not.

The guy’s whole demeanor was off-putting and she wondered if he was a new client for Red Stone. She certainly hoped not. “The reason I probably look familiar,” she said quietly, dropping her voice so that the others around them couldn’t hear, “is because I was at Club Bardot the other night and saw a prostitute give you a blow job right in the VIP section.” She’d been there following someone for one of her past jobs—seeing if there was another angle to being able to infiltrate the company. Meaning, potential bribery of an employee. She hadn’t had to use that angle, thankfully.

He blinked in clear surprise, but he didn’t seem embarrassed. “She wasn’t a prostitute.”

That was his response? She coughed to cover up an uncomfortable laugh. “Oh, I just assumed.”

He straightened, clearly not deterred. “Well, listen—”

She shook her head. “I’m not trying to be rude, but I literally had to see your dick against my will when you whipped it out for the entire VIP section to see. I don’t think we have anything to say to each other.”

Isa heard a woman snicker behind her and realized she hadn’t been as quiet as she’d thought. But seriously, it was too early in the morning for this. She hadn’t even had her coffee yet.

The guy shrugged, not even fazed. “Your loss.”

She snorted to herself. Yeah, she was sure she’d lose a lot of sleep over this guy. When two elevators’ doors opened, she slipped into the opposite one he got into. At thirty she was too young to be out of the dating game, but damn, if this was what was out there, she was fine being single.

New Release Excerpt Tour and Giveaway! SHATTERED DUTY by Katie Reus (A Deadly Ops novel)

Out now! Read on for excerpt #7 and a giveaway!

Shatter Duty BT

Shattered Duty  Synopsis:

A new novel from the author of Bound to Danger who “has the amazing ability of pulling the reader onto the front lines of the action and drama.” (The Reading Café)

When his wife was murdered two years ago, Special Agent Levi Lazaro turned his back on everything he cared about. Ever since, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. Now he’s finally uncovered the identities of those who killed his wife—and he’s ready to destroy them at any cost. He won’t let anything stand in his way—not even a beautiful NSA agent on a mission of her own.

Special Agent Selene Wolfe prides herself on being the best. Her fearlessness and quick-thinking make her the perfect person to take down a deadly terrorist cell. But she needs Levi’s help, and the moment he shows up, Selene knows her objectivity—and her heart—are in trouble.

As the two strike an uneasy alliance, Levi finds himself tormented by his desire for Selene—a feeling he thought long dead. But when their mission takes an unexpected turn, he finds himself at a crossroads. Can he put aside his need for revenge to save the woman who’s reawakened his soul?

Excerpt:

“Were you on my computer?” he asked through the door, already knowing the answer.

As the door flew open, Levi stepped back, ready for another attack but she stood there with her hair wrapped in a towel above her head and another towel wrapped snuggly around her body, tucked perfectly between her breasts. “Of course. I was snooping, what else.”

He stared at her, forcing his gaze to remain on her face. “And you’re just . . . admitting it?”

“Why would I lie? I’d be stupid not to take a peek at your computer. You shouldn’t have left it out if you didn’t want me to go through it. Your encryption is pretty good, but I’m better. And your playlist sucks, by the way.”

“My playlist is awesome,” he said without thinking. He shouldn’t be arguing with her about his damn music, he should be yelling at her for going through his computer. Even if she was right. He shouldn’t have left the damn thing out. There was nothing of particular value on it so he wasn’t concerned about that. He used it mainly for communication but he always deleted his tracks no matter what.

Snorting, she sidestepped him and headed for the closet. Moments later she came back out wearing one of his T-shirts and jogging pants—and no bra. He swallowed hard, trying not to notice how full her breasts were or imagine how they’d feel cupped in his hands. Fuck him. He closed his eyes, trying to shove away the image of her lean, smooth body but it was impossible. He could easily envision those sexy tan lines and fantasize how her bare mound would feel against his mouth and tongue.

“Awesome is not the word that comes to mind. More like, wrist-slitting depressing. And you don’t even have any good country music on there.”

His eyes snapped open and he watched as she sauntered over to the mattress and collapsed on it as if she totally belonged there. The fact that he liked seeing her there made something shift inside his chest—and the guilt was back. She pulled the towel off her head and dropped it on the floor in a messy heap.

“You like country?” he asked before yanking up her towel. He wondered if she was messy in general, then cursed his curiosity. He should not care what kind of habits she had. She was just going to be an asset to him, nothing more. Right.

“Uh, yeah. Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, come on, who doesn’t love those guys?”

It was too weird to be having this conversation with her, but he shook his head and hung that towel and the one she’d left haphazardly in the closet back in the bathroom. As he finished stripping off his shirt, shoes, and socks he said, “That’s not real country.”

“Really? Because I’m pretty sure they’re topping the Billboard country charts,” she said, finger-combing her damp hair.

“You know what I mean,” he muttered, sitting on the opposite side of the mattress. When he thought of country it was Hank or Autry. “You’re sleeping here?” He’d originally planned to just cuff her to him but now she’d proved the cuffs were useless and she didn’t seem to be going anywhere.

“Well, I’m not sleeping on the floor. Unless you’re worried about me killing you in your sleep?” The light note in her voice took away what could have been a deadly question.

Rolling his eyes, he turned off the only lamp in the room and laid down next to her. He noticed that she’d slid under the sheet he’d thrown on the mattress, giving them a little separation.

It was beyond surreal sleeping next to a woman who worked for his old boss—and who’d just mocked his taste in music as if they were friends—and it was made worse by the fact that he wanted her. Desperately.
