New Release Review! DANGEROUSLY RED by Kristin Miller (A Dark and Dirty Tale #3)

Dangerously Red
by Kristin Miller

Synopsis:

In part three of the new Dark and Dirty Tale serial by New York Times and USA best-selling author Kristin Miller, the time has come for Red to choose. But things are not always as they seem…

Before the night is through, I’ll join the Arcana wolf pack, declare a mate, and transition into a wolf for the first time. I must decide between Reaper, the devilishly sexy huntsman, and Lukas, the fiercely controlling Alpha. Both pleasure me senseless, taking me to heights I’ve never known. But I can’t have both.

Time is up, and I must choose.

But Lukas just dropped a bombshell. If I declare him as my mate, no other person is allowed to touch me. Ever. Not a handshake or a good-bye hug. Talk about stifling. Not to mention, the Omega has all but forbidden me to choose Reaper. As I stand before the pack, I must decide…the man who unleashes dark desires inside me, or the man I’m forbidden to love.

Get ready for scorching hot Alphas, a spitfire heroine, and a breathtaking ending!

The Dark and Dirty tale series is best enjoyed in order.
Reading Order:
Book #1 Desiring Red
Book #2 Dominating Red
Book #3 Dangerously Red

Review:

This one didn’t end up going where I thought it would, given the series start (and the blurbs, and the covers–I know, I know, but I keep expecting things…) but ultimately they were entertaining.

I feel like I need to re-read the first two books again (Desiring Red and  Dominating Red) just to check the consistency of the antagonist–one of the characters ends up doing a total turnaround from what they originally appear to be, and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. Things end up working out well for Ivy in the end–but does the change make it too easy?

All three books in the series are out now, and even back-to-back they’d be a quick read–not standalones, though; they really need to be read in order. If you’re partial to werewolves and like your romances heavy on the steam but fairly light on plot, you’d probably enjoy this series.

Pre-Release Review! DESIRING RED by Kristin Miller (A Dark and Dirty Tale #1)

Desiring Red
by Kristin Miller

Synopsis:

I’m indecisive when it comes to my shoes. Choosing a werewolf mate who’ll be with me until I croak? Pardon me while I take some time to think on it. But a steamy encounter before the final ceremony changes everything.

Reaper, the Omega’s eldest grandson, is fiercely loyal, scorching hot, and built for pleasure. He brings down my defenses, and before I know what’s happening, I succumb to the heat in his touch and the skill of his mouth. I’ve only just met him, but I need him like no other.

As part of my pack duties, I must parade in front of the Alpha, who has first choice of the pre-shifters. Rumors of his dark desires run deep, and I’ve always been intrigued. But the forbidden passion blazing between Reaper and me is too primal to deny. By pack law, Reaper can’t have me until the Alpha makes his choice…but Reaper’s never been one to follow the rules.

Review:

The cover makes this one look like a menage, which it’s not–yet–this is the first part in a series (A Dark and Dirty Tale) in which there’s at least one more book coming (Dominating Red). One or more of those could definitely be in Ivy, the main character’s, future, but it doesn’t happen in this one.

What we do have is the beginning of a story–a super fast read; I kept an eye on how much of the book/how much time my Kindle said I had to go and couldn’t figure out how everything could possibly be resolved by then, only to find out that it wasn’t. That was a relief, really, because more is going on here than can reasonably be finished up in way less than 100 pages!

I liked Ivy a lot, though I didn’t quite get why their pack culture demands female pre-shifters choose a mate before their first shift, which is what she’s tasked with doing as the story begins–choose, or the choice will be made for her. Maybe there isn’t more of a reason than it’s just tradition, but I felt like I wanted more justification than that.

It did remind me of one of my favorite Demotivators, though:

Not completely understanding this part of it didn’t really affect my enjoyment of the story; I’d just like to comprehend the urgency a little more is all. Is there an actual reason for it?

Anyway…

On the day she has to announce her choice, Ivy encounters not one, but two sexy werewolf men–Reaper, the mysterious, out-for-revenge one who should be alpha but he’s too busy trying to avenge his parents’ death, and his cousin Lukas, the one who’s been made alpha in his place. Both men seem to have a lot going on in their favor; she has some pretty steamy scenes with one, and some maybe even more delicious innuendo-heavy ones with the other.

Meanwhile, the alpha may not be the sensitive, sensual guy he came off as in their initial interview, and Reaper’s got his own agenda going on and claims to have nothing to offer Ivy other than a few hours of sensual bliss. (He gets a good head start on that part in this book, at least, I’ll give him that.) Along with Ivy’s choose-a-life-mate pressures and a pack mystery that Reaper has to solve before he can take off again, it’s clear that this series has its work cut out for it. I’m anxious to see what will happen next–fortunately, book 2’s due out in just a few weeks!

Beauty and the Beast–with a twist!

Beauty and the Werewolf Tour Banner

Beauty and the Werewolf
by Kristin Miller
San Francisco Wolf Pack #2
Publication Date: August 2015
Genres: Paranormal, Romance

Synopsis:

Unmated werewolves don’t normally live past three hundred years old…and billionaire Jack MacGrath is cutting it close. Sure, he has almost everything—the respect of his peers, a mansion in San Francisco, a private jet, and fast cars. But without a mate, Jack’s in trouble. Then he sees her. Gorgeous, proud…and his enemy.

Isabelle Connelly is good at hiding things from her father. Like her success as a painter, or the incredibly intense attraction she has to Jack MacGrath. After all, she’s royalty and falling for anyone lesser—to say nothing of a rival pack—would be, er, unseemly. Now she must choose between her duty to her family and her pack…or her perfect fated mate.

Beauty Werewolf Teaser 2

Excerpt:

“Tell Mr. MacGrath that Isabelle Connelly is here to see him.” She spoke loudly into the intercom. “I’d like to make an offer on his newest piece of acquired art: Werewolf in Venice.”

Silence followed after a deafeningly loud crackling sound.

Five minutes dragged by. She tapped her fingers on the steering wheel and refused to move. Stared at the intricate ironwork on the gate.

“I’m not leaving,” she mumbled to herself. “Not until I get my painting.”

Nothing else mattered.

Billionaire or not, everything had a price.

She’d simply have to make him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Hell if she knew what that was, though.

Without warning, the gates let out a groan, startling her. She jumped in her seat and watched them open slowly, revealing a winding stone-paved driveway. She put the Camry in gear and drove toward a towering fountain erected in the middle of the driveway.

But the closer she got to the fountain, the slower she drove.

She gawked, mouth hanging open in disbelief.

Good God, the fountain was hideously phallic. Like a giant penis standing ramrod-straight in the middle of a gravel bed. Water bubbled up from the tip, making her throw up a little in her mouth.

Craning her neck around, Isabelle shook her head and scoffed.

It was a disgustingly perfect fountain for a guy like Jack MacGrath.

As she turned, veering away from the fountain—out of pure instinct—she realized she was now parked facing the stairs to his mansion. And took up the width of the driveway, hood to rear end.

Damn it.

She should’ve just parked next to the damn thing.

Glancing in the rearview mirror, she reversed carefully. As she inched closer to the penis monolith, the unmistakable whop-whop-whop of a helicopter sounded in the distance. The racket increased.

Was a helicopter landing on the damn house?

She bent, craning to look beneath the doorframe. She searched the sky. One way, and then the other.

There it was.

A freaking helicopter swooped over his house, making a low dive over her car.

She squealed, ducking low in her seat.

The thunderous flac-flac-flac of the blades drowned out everything—the rumble of the Camry’s engine and the drumming of her own heart—as it dropped out of the sky and hovered above the large lawn on the opposite end of the estate. The chopper was massive. Menacing. A door on the side slid open. A rope was flung out, hitting the grass.

What the hell?

With a jolt, the tires of her car ran over something crackly. Her car bumbled. Shook. And then backed into something solid.

“Oh, shit!” Isabelle gripped the wheel tight and slammed on the brakes. Whipping around, she glared out the back window…and caught the breath in her throat. She must’ve been inching back without realizing it. She’d rear-ended the giant penis. It wobbled, shook. The tip seemed loose, teetering on the thick base. “No, no, no, don’t—”

And then it fell. Dropped right to the ground with a thud.

Cue mortification.

Beauty Werewolf Teaser 3

Review:

Beauty and the Beast meets Romeo and Juliet–all with a modern twist!

I really enjoyed this retelling of the classic tale, and not only because it featured werewolves, my favorite paranormal creatures. Ms. Miller did a fantastic job of ramping up the urgency of Belle and Jack being together in the end, making his eventual sacrifice that much more significant–two elements so important in the original story but often lacking in modern versions.

On top of that, it was just a whole lot of fun to read (the phallic fountain scene! Too funny)–even if there wasn’t a library to be seen. The art gallery/collection was a nice substitute, but, you know, it’s not a library. 😉

I loved Jack as a hero–he really was everything you could want and more. Gorgeous, sexy, a werewolf and a guy who uses his power and wealth to benefit others, and…dying. He’s already gone two decades past where he should have without finding his mate, and is pretty much surviving now on adrenaline rushes, which have to get progressively more daring the longer he lives without finding his Luminary. Even though he’s desperate to find his mate and bring fulfillment to his life, he still puts Belle’s happiness and well being before his own.

Sigh.

Worthy.

Isabelle, though I liked her, wasn’t quite up to his caliber of protagonist. She’s supposed to be taking over for her father as Alpha eventually, but she doesn’t really act like future alpha material. She’s a little too dependent on approval from dad (yes, I know, he’s the Alpha. But she should still show a certain degree of leadership and backbone) and listens a bit too much to her pack BFF, Neil. She doesn’t shift at all in the book–yes, it was a short read, but still? And I really didn’t get how she justified taking back the painting she’d given Jack when she returned to Ireland to see her dying father–after telling him he could keep it until she got back, and especially after he let her take ten other paintings…

Essentially, she’s the reason for the loss of a star here. She makes up for it in the end, but before that point she had me shaking my head quite a bit in a WTF? kind of way.

Still, Jack’s awesomeness–and the re-imagining of a classic tale–were strong enough to keep me eagerly turning the pages. As Jack stays fairly aloof from the San Francisco pack, Beauty and the Werewolf works fine as a standalone read even though it’s #2 in the series.

So I Married a Werewolf
by Kristin Miller

Review:

This was a quick and fun read in one of my favorite troupes–friends to lovers!

I loved the character of Faith–somehow it’s always so easy to relate to heroes/heroines who suffer from unrequited love, isn’t it? Spending so much time firmly in the “friend zone”–it’s hard not to totally feel for her. I am so jealous of her dog training abilities, though. Once more a fictional dog owner manages to make me feel totally inferior. Ah well, I just tell myself she’s dealing with fictional dogs, whereas mine is totally real…real annoying… 😉

Carter is a very likable hero as well–I do always like the oblivious guys who eventually get a clue. The fact that he did try to figure out if the “more than one soul mate” idea was a myth was heartening–you go, Carter!–though he was a little too quick to decide that one person’s experience in that area was going to be the new law. My thinking would be, “Hey that old idea was proven wrong, so maybe there’s flexibility here as well?” Ah, well, at least he finally figures it out. I really loved the awesome thing he does for Faith at the end, (not going to tell you; you’ll have to read it!) because it was just fabulous.

I’m definitely going to be reading the other Seattle Wolf books soon–it’s a fun world, and werewolves are one of my weaknesses! Can’t wait to see what is coming next. 🙂

(Can I just say I was totally bummed that the cover Carter doesn’t have the book Carter’s tattoos? I was really looking forward to checking them out…oh well, a minor issue, I know. But still.)

Meet Carter Griffin, Hero of SO I MARRIED A WEREWOLF by Kristin Miller (with a Giveaway!)

Ever wonder what it takes to make a delicious werewolf hero? Read on to find out!

writerwed

Carter Griffin (Werewolf and enforcing officer for the Seattle Wolf Pack)

So I Married a Werewolf
Kristin Miller

Start with one dominant werewolf who is used to getting what he wants.

Add:

Dark hair, cut close to the sides

Ice blue eyes

Lips designed for pleasure

Tattoos covering his golden-tan skin

Mix with:

Possessiveness

Quick wit

Unwavering loyalty to his friends

An unquenchable thirst to claim his mate as his

While you start with the mold of “best friend”, don’t be discouraged. With a mix of determination, persistence, and tactics to make him jealous, the man will have the clawing desire to become more than friends. Throw in a dash of humor, a hint of companionship, a generous amount of teasing foreplay, and you’ll have a man who melts for you.

In So I Married a Werewolf, Faith and Carter are packmates and great friends who strike up a marriage bargain so that he can earn a promotion at work, and she can help pay for her brother’s college tuition. It’s funny how love can destroy even the most carefully thought out plans…

Hold on tight for your tantalizing sample…

“I’m…” He shoved his fingers through his hair. “I’m worried about you.”

She stepped back toward the embankment, beneath a flickering umbrella of light, and hopped up on the concrete half wall separating the walkway from a patch of grass.

“You’ve got no reason to worry about me,” she said. “I’m not yours.”

“You are mine.” He advanced, and then stopped suddenly, a look of shock flashing over his face. “For the next few months, you’re my wife.”

“But I’m not your woman or your mate.” She kicked her legs over the edge. “If I want to talk to a stranger in the bar until midnight I will, as long as it doesn’t interfere with our agreement or your chances of getting the detective position.”

The light overhead flickered to black. In the temporary dark, Faith heard the hard and true thump-thump of Carter’s heartbeat, his heavy intake and exhale of breath, and the clunk of his heel as he eliminated the space between them.

“Carter?”

He whispered, “Let me try something.”

And in the next instant, his hand was on her cheek. She flinched, but his fingers lingered, the pads brushing against her skin in a loving caress. She couldn’t help it—the tenderness of his touch forced her eyes closed. His hand glided to the back of her neck, and he gave a little tug, scooting her to the very edge of the half wall. He stood against the concrete, his hips pressing her thighs apart.

Her breath hitched as he tilted her head up with his fingers and planted an openmouthed kiss on her neck. Sparks sizzled across her skin and warmed her from the inside out.

She shouldn’t be doing this. He didn’t want her last night.

What changed?

His tongue shot out tantalizingly slow, tracing her scar from her jawline down the side of her neck. Quivering, she reached out for him and grazed her nails down his back. Then she grabbed fistfuls of his shirt and shoved him away from her.

“Are you the same person you were last night?” she asked, willing her racing heart to still.

His face was close to hers and closing in. “I am.”

“Am I the same woman?”

“I hope so.” The words were spoken from a smiling mouth—one that was going to kiss her and stop her heart in two seconds flat. God, he smelled good. Like pine and woodsmoke.

She held him at arm’s length. “I thought we were friends.”

“We are. I was thinking we could try ‘friends with benefits’ on for size.”

God, he’d probably benefit as well as he kissed.

Book Title: So I Married a Werewolf
Author: Kristin Miller
Release Date: July 28
Genre: Paranormal Category

Book Synopsis:

Carter Griffin, enforcing officer for the Seattle Wolf Pack, has a problem. He’s been offered the promotion of his dreams…if he can find a wife to prove he’s over his playboy ways. But Carter’s already walked the matrimonial road and bought the stinkin’ T-shirt. Besides, a werewolf only gets one fated mate. Been there, done that.

All werewolf dog trainer Faith Hamilton wants to do is earn enough green stuff to put her younger brother through college. Okay, okay, so she also totally wants Carter, her sexy next-door neighbor, to look at her as more than a friend. It’s too bad size 12 and plain isn’t his type. At all.

The two friends strike a deal to help one another out. They must face a variety of challenges from a psycho ex-girlfriend to a Yorkie with a shoe fetish…and that pesky problem of only having one-fated mate in a lifetime. Will a relationship ruin their friendship…or spark a love neither anticipated?

Covet Release Day! Two Fabulous New Releases and Giveaways!

Woot! I’ve been looking forward to reading both of these titles–stay tuned for reviews! In the meantime, read all about them and enter the giveaways to win!

From the desk of Katie Clapsadl:

As long time readers of this blog know, I absolutely love all things Paranormal. So much so, that when the position for the Publicity Director of Entangled Publishing’s Paranormal Romance line, Covet, opened up, there wasn’t even a moment’s hesitation in knowing this position was perfect for me. Covets have all the sexiness, emotion, and happily ever after that readers have come to expect and love from Entangled. They are firmly grounded in the contemporary world, but each novel brings in supernatural twists, breaking the contemporary and paranormal rules, alike. To find out more about our titles, chat with authors, participate
in special events, and to find out what books you’ll be coveting next, visit the Entangled website, follow us on Twitter, and LIKE our Facebook page.

I love being able to combine work and play, so today I’m featuring our October releases. Make sure to check them out and enter the fabulous giveaways!!

Bad Cop by Angela McCallister

Bad Mouth Sequel

A cop who tosses the rulebooks to get his way…Vampire Ian McCready doesn’t care for Alice Capshaw’s opinions about his version of justice. Her humanity makes her off-limits, but that does nothing to lessen his overwhelming desire for her. To Alice, Ian is just another bad cop as detestable as the one who destroyed her family. She’s attracted to him, yes, but he threatened his way into her agency’s murder case and has too many secrets. When a new case resurrects ghosts Ian believed long dead and buried, his law-bending ways might result in his execution. The second Alice becomes a target, his cold heart flares into blinding existence. But following the law for her sake may end with devastating results.

Four Weddings and a Werewolf
Seattle Wolf Pack #2

To have and to howl…

Logan Black, former Marine and bodyguard for the Seattle Wolf Pack, hates weddings and has no plan to walk the path to matrimonial misery. But when he’s hired to protect a hot-to-trot wedding planner with a werewolf stalker, he’s forced to put his feelings aside. Not such an easy task when the damsel can turn him on with a single smoldering glance.

Wedding planner Veronica Vale knows werewolves exist, but hates them. One bit her sister, changing their lives forever. When a sexy Marine shows his gorgeous face at one of her wedding appointments, Veronica finds it hard to focus on the task at hand.

The chemistry drawing Logan and Veronica together seems fated, but with Logan’s playboy attitude, Veronica’s hatred for werewolves, and a stalker lurking in the shadows, these two need more than passion to keep them together.

What I’m Reading: A Week in Review as NaNoWriMo Approacheth…. (10-26-13)

We’re getting us some culture! 😉

Mini Moe #2 and I are headed over the border today–to the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake to see Our Betters by W. Somerset Maugham. It’s kind of last minute–a friend had extra tickets. Their website says it’s similar to Downton Abbey, which we’ve both watched and liked…well, MM#2 liked it until she saw the season finale last year. Since then she’s been a little bitter; hopefully nothing like that will happen this afternoon. It’s recommended for ages 14 and up–fingers crossed that I won’t have to spend too much time covering her eyes.

NaNoWriMo begins this Friday! Don’t worry–still plenty of time to panic! (And sign up, if you haven’t yet. Just go here and join the insanity! And then add me as your writing buddy–my NaNo name is beckymmoe.)

On to the books…

This week I finished Hunter’s Moon by Lisa Kessler–loved it and reviewed it here. Lisa stopped by the blog on Friday with an awesome guest post–make sure you check it out if you didn’t already! Next I read Seven Day Fiance by Rachel Harris–very cute! My review is here. I moved on to Last Chance Book Club by Hope Ramsay next; it was the latest read for Harlequin Junkie’s HEA Book Club…this is definitely one series I’m going to be reading more from. Absolutely loving the small town vibe in it. I then moved on to Prevailing Life by Amaris Chapman, a YA paranormal. I’m almost finished–review coming later on this week.

Next on my TBR: Down the Aisle by Christine Bell, Falling for the Marine by Samanthe Beck, and Four Weddings and a Werewolf by Kristin Miller because I love the title. And I’m going to squeeze in Kristan Higgins’s new book, The Perfect Match, if it kills me. Must. Read.

In audio, I finished Emmaso I must be ready for NaNo, right? Right?

Finally, I started Rick Roirdan’s latest in the Heroes of Olympics series, The House of Hades. MM#2 has already finished it, and assures me there won’t be an agonizing cliffhanger ending to this one. She’d better be telling the truth, or she’s grounded for sure.

What are you reading this week? If you’re participating in NaNo, tell us about your novel!
