New Release and Giveaway! ALPHA SQUAD: BOOT CAMP by Lorelei Moone (Alpha Squad #1)

ALPHA SQUAD: Boot Camp
by Lorelei Moone
Alpha Squad #1
Publication Date: December 23, 2016
Genres: Adult, Paranormal Romance, Bear Shifters

Synopsis:

It has only been a few months since humanity has found out about the shifters that live in their midst. When the New Alliance leadership asks Eric King to join Alpha Squad, a joint taskforce supposed to promote cooperation between the shifters and human authorities, his loyalty to the cause doesn’t give him any choice but to agree. But is the squad actually supposed to be relevant, or is it just an eyewash, set up by the new Secretary for Shifter Affairs to make himself look good? And how is he going to concentrate on his training, when his inner bear is insisting that the squad leader is his true mate?

Major Janine Williams is not at all pleased when she is ordered to set up Alpha Squad. The initiative is just a gimmick, meant to pacify the shifter community, plus none of her male colleagues had wanted the job. But when she starts getting to know her team, especially tough East London bear shifter, Eric, she starts to wonder if perhaps it will be possible to make this task force a success, so long as everyone works together. And so long as she can manage to keep her relationship with Eric strictly professional…

Excerpt:

“I’ll be back shortly,” she mumbled as she fumbled with the tent’s opening and staggered out.

The sky was clear, which was unusual for this part of the world. Countless stars lit up the tent site and surrounding rocks and shrubbery. Janine would have to walk downhill a bit for cover.

She took a deep breath and wrapped her warm jacket around herself. It was only late September, but the nights were already chilly in these hills. With the help of the star and moon light, Janine found the most gradual path down into some larger shrubs about thirty or so feet away from the summit.

She did not waste time, and soon after started her climb back up. That was when it all went wrong. A loose rock escaped from underneath her foot and sent her sliding down the side of the hill. She let out a low whimper as her hip hit a sharp protrusion on the way, all the while flailing and reaching out for whatever vegetation she could find to stop her fall.

This seemed to go on forever, until finally, she stopped slipping. But it wasn’t a small tree or shrub that had broken her momentum, it was a firm hand around her wrist.

Janine looked up and found a pair of familiar eyes staring down at her. Eric King.

How in the world had he come to her rescue so quickly? There had been no activity around the camp as far as Janine saw. Perhaps he had been out and about as well.

“Gotcha,” he said. “Terrain’s treacherous around these hills.” He glanced up at the summit, which was a good hundred feet away now.

God, that voice. Janine did not say a word as he lifted her back onto her feet; she could not find the words. Of course, it was not just his voice, it was his whole being that had affected her so. After trying so hard to do the best job she could, no matter what the assignment, at this moment, she wanted nothing more than to throw it all away.

You’re mine. The same low growl entered her mind. This was totally the wrong time for her overactive imagination to kick in.

Am I? Am I yours? she thought.

I knew that you were from the moment I first saw you.

Janine was frozen in place, communicating with whatever that voice was—a figment of her own imagination perhaps—when Eric’s eyes began to glow in the dark. In this light, it should not have been possible to make out their color, but they had very clearly turned warm amber.

“How are you doing this?” she stammered.

“Wait, you can actually hear me?” he asked, looking about as shocked as she felt.

Janine opened her mouth to say something, then closed it again and frowned.

I don’t understand. I have my orders. I have a job to do. Why are you in my head?

A smile broke through Eric’s formerly serious expression. Because I am meant to be in your head. For whatever reason, we are meant to be in each other’s lives.

Janine shook her head. That does not make any sense. And anyway, I never knew shifters could read minds.

We can’t. Only when we find our true mate can we hear their thoughts, and they can hear ours.

That was too much. Janine freed her wrist from Eric’s grasp and started to walk away, still shaking her head. She could not accept this.

“Thanks for saving me,” she mumbled as she fought the pain resulting from her fall and marched back toward camp. “I need some time to think.”

Publication Date: October 13, 2016
Genres: Adult, Paranormal Romance, Vampires, Novella, Romance

Synopsis:
Cat has never been a social butterfly. The only reason she even agreed to go to the stupid Halloween party was because her friend and room mate Shelly wanted to attend. When she gets spooked upon almost falling into bed with the host, she’s convinced it was all a big mistake. And what’s worse, now people are stalking her wherever she goes!
Alexander Broderick has been hosting his annual Halloween parties for over a century. There’s only one problem: she’s a so-called Blood Bride – a mortal woman whose blood smells so delicious that every vampire in town wants to drain her.

EXCERPT:

Alexander Broderick stood at the top of the curving stairwell in the center of his Kensington residence, surveying his domain. The party had started at eight sharp, with more guests arriving every few minutes.

His Halloween parties were an age old tradition, even if their grandeur and scale had evolved significantly since the early days. A hundred years ago, he’d been content inviting a few friends and acquaintances, all of them vampire like he was. Now, every year, the event had grown bigger and better, featuring new faces from all walks of life.

Eternity was a very long time to spend in isolation. He craved the change in routine, no matter how hard his maker had tried to discourage him from going overboard in the past. Of course, ever since Julius had taken over the Council leadership, he had other things on his mind than to monitor Alexander’s social life.

Alexander thrived on the attention these parties afforded him. On a night such as tonight, he could step out of the shadows and into normality. Even if some guests noticed strange things around the house, they’d accept it as part of the magic of Halloween. It also helped that he kept the alcohol flowing generously throughout the night.

Tonight was the one night per year that the weird and wonderful became acceptable. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. So many people. So many aromas. His parties weren’t an excuse to feed as such; no, he could do that any time. But the sheer variety of humankind at his feet was difficult to ignore.

Every vampire in attendance tonight would feel the same way. Alexander smiled as he imagined the depravity that would occur within these walls.

Sex, blood, and rock ‘n’ roll. Alexander couldn’t suppress a chuckle.

They’d keep things clean enough, of course. Everyone here was keen to stretch the rules but not break them. They wouldn’t take things so far as to attract suspicion. They wouldn’t kill.

Alexander himself would join in the festivities as well. But first and foremost, he enjoyed playing host.

He was especially fond of striking up conversations with first-time guests. First he’d figure out how they’d come by an invitation, then he’d guide the conversation toward other topics that interested him.

He was a connoisseur of sorts; like some immersed themselves in fine wines, politics, or even sports, Alexander collected knowledge on the human psyche. Zeitgeist, as some people called it; he loved to learn about that special set of thoughts and ideas that made society tick. In gathering information about how people lived their fleeting lives, he sought to find meaning for his own.

As he slowly started to walk down the stairs, he focused on acting normal; that meant being a lot more clunky and obvious in his movements than his instincts dictated.

He was socializing, not stalking prey!

That was one of the first lessons he’d learned once he started inviting humans to his get-togethers. If you approached them in too stealthy a fashion, they easily got spooked. Halfway down, his friend Michael nodded a greeting as he passed him by. The much younger vampire wasn’t one to waste time; he’d already found himself two willing females to spend what he liked to call ‘quality time.’ Everyone had certain talents; seduction was his.Alexander was about to continue down the steps when a presence caught him off guard. He wasn’t sure what it was exactly. A quick scan around the room revealed that all the guests were quite busy entertaining themselves; nobody was looking in his direction.

He sprinted back up the stairs, faster than a human eye could see, and gazed back down to figure out what had affected him so.

The front door swung open and two women entered. One was quite ordinary, and he could hardly tell her apart from the two Michael had just led upstairs. The other, though…

A radiant sight of womanhood.

Her floor length gown was very different from the skimpy outfits everyone else had chosen to wear. Blood red—which in itself would have been enough to entice even the most reclusive vampire among his company.

Raven hair halfway down her shoulder, which swayed with every step she took.

A face flawless, like that of a porcelain doll.

And curves. Her body exuded a richness that made every fiber in his body ache for her.As different as they were, the two new guests couldn’t have been a day older than 25, much younger than his usual choice of conversation partner.

He held on to the banister with both hands, then had to force himself to let go when the wood groaned under his tight grip. A lot could be forgiven on All Hallows’ Eve, but destroying the furnishing with his super-human strength would raise a few eyebrows.

Alexander focused his hearing on the two women who still stood indecisively in the hall.

One of his staff immediately approached them with a welcome drink.

“Thank you,” the dark haired beauty said. The voice of an angel.

The blond didn’t speak; instead, she just chugged the champagne and placed her empty glass back onto the waiter’s tray. Alexander recognized her type. She gave the impression of a hunter among humans; she knew what she was after, and was scouting the place for the right mark.

Alexander stood frozen in place, waiting for the woman in the red gown to make a move. The blonde had taken a few steps forward and spotted the dance floor in the reception room.

She waved at her companion to join her, who refused.

“You go ahead. I’ll hang back and get a feel for the place first,” the medieval angel said, then took a small sip of champagne to make her point.

Alexander smiled and closed his eyes. Perhaps his senses were deceiving him tonight, but he could swear that he could catch her scent all the way up here.

A hungry vampire could smell his prey from nearly a mile away. But Alexander wasn’t hungry.

At least not for nourishment.

From the moment she’d entered, the quality of the air seemed to have changed. He knew he had to have her before anyone else. He would get to know this young woman, learn all he could about her. Take her to his chambers and bed her. He would taste her very essence. He had to. His instincts gave him no choice.

Before he opened his eyes, he knew she still stood in the same place; he could sense it. When he looked down at her, he noticed that it wasn’t just him who had noticed her. A half dozen sets of eyes had shifted in her direction.

Could they smell her too?

Alexander rushed down the stairs again, almost forgetting to follow the usual tricks to appear more human. So far so good: the other vampires had spotted her, but stayed back for now. He would reach her first. If her arrival had made this much of an impact, he would have to take it upon himself to ensure her safety here.

This was his house after all. His party.

He’d never been one to lose his tongue in company, but the closer he got to the woman, the more uncertain he grew. She wasn’t just any other human to him; she was a whole lot more special than that.

“I hope you’re enjoying yourself?” he said as he reached her side.

She looked up at him, her eyebrows pulled together in surprise. “Who, me?”

“Yes, Miss…”

“Uh… my name’s Cat.”

“Short for Catherine?” Alexander asked, mesmerized by her pale green eyes as she continued to look up at him.

She looked so vulnerable. He could hear her heartbeat, and the rush of her blood as it was pumped through her body. Being so near to her tested his patience like nothing ever had. If he’d been starving and faced with a first meal in weeks, he would have found it easier to walk away than he did now. There was something very different about this woman, though he had no idea what it was.

“I suppose, yes. Short for Catherine,” she stammered.

He wasn’t trying to hypnotize her, at least not on purpose. Was she under his control already?

How was that even possible?

“I said I hope you’re enjoying yourself,” he said, repeating his first question.

“Oh, yes.” Catherine raised her glass and smiled briefly. “And what a beautiful house this is. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

That gave Alexander his opening, a chance to get her away from all the hungry stares from every vampire in the room.

“Perhaps you’d like to see more of it?” he asked, smiling subtly to avoid exposing his sharp canines.

Catherine didn’t answer straight away, instead continuing to stare at him. Hopefully, she wasn’t actually hypnotized. Alexander was looking forward to having a natural conversation with this woman. Not a forced interrogation while she was under his influence.“Don’t tell me this is your place?” she asked at last.

Was she just nervous? Could that be?

Alexander winked at her in an attempt to break the tension and gain her trust. “Okay, I won’t tell you that it is.”

“Holy shit.” Catherine immediately covered her mouth with her hand as she looked around the entrance hall again. “I’m sorry.”

“You have nothing to be sorry about. My offer still stands by the way. If you want a tour…” Alexander said.

She looked into his eyes and there it was again, that strange feeling that had overcome him from the moment she’d entered his home. He had to have her, discover all there was to learn about her. Intellectually, physically, even spiritually, if that even made sense. “I’m sorry, I just didn’t expect to end up here chatting with the host of the party straightaway.

Yes. I’d love a tour,” Cat said while straightening her shoulders.

So she had just been nervous.

He wasn’t sure why, but that pleased him. Probably because he’d been a little nervous at first too.It was silly. He’d walked this earth for centuries and seduced plenty of beautiful ladies in his day.

As delicious as this woman smelled, what did he have to be nervous about? He offered her his arm, which she reluctantly accepted. Her touch seemed to burn through his tuxedo right into his skin, almost painfully.

“We’ll start with the downstairs,” he said.

As Alexander led her past some of his immortal guests into the reception room, he felt their eyes on the two of them. There was no emotion as powerful to the senses as jealousy. Perhaps his nerves had been trying to tell him something. This party wasn’t like every previous one. This time, he was playing with fire.

AUDIO EXCERPT:

Review:

The first three stories of the Scottish Werebear series take place concurrently–book one back at the isolated McMillan farm, and books two and three in Edinburgh.

Scottish Werebears: An Unexpected Affair was my favorite of the three. It introduced the world of the shifters in the series, which we learn about alongside Clarise (one of the book’s two non-shifting main characters, and the only American). Most of the drama of the shifter-hunting society is saved for the next two in the series, though we do sense a bit of what’s going on through the drama that it becomes clear that Derek’s brother is dealing with.

As in all three books, Clarise and Derek’s story is one of opposites attracting. The American human and Scottish werebear farmer are both attracted to each other from the first, though she assumes he’s married (he leaves her baked goods, which she attributes to the “farmer’s wife” and he doesn’t correct her) and he is certain that attraction or no, he could never be with a human. An accident soon brings them together, and they no longer can deny what is happening between them. What will they do? 4 stars / B

Scottish Werebears: A Dangerous Business is the story of Derek’s brother Aiden, who left the family farm years ago to discover the truth about their parents’ deaths. As a part of the Alliance, a group dedicated to protecting the shifter populations from the Sons of Domnall, a neo-Nazi-style hate group that wants to wipe them all off the face of the planet, he meets Heidi, a werewolf and…his fated mate. How can this be?

I enjoyed watching Aiden and Heidi struggle with their feelings (though shouldn’t she have figured out sooner that Aiden and Jamie were different species? That part seemed odd) and the drama and excitement of their encounter with the Sons. I was hoping against hope that Auden’d not only find the answers he was looking for but also an HEA with Heidi, despite their differences. 3 1/2 stars / B-

Scottish Werebears: A Forbidden Love is Jamie (Aiden’s boss at the alliance) and Alison’s (the daughter of the leader of the Sons!) story. Of the three, its plot definitely seemed to offer the most drama–the two are supposed to be sworn enemies! Plus, we find out that Alison played a part in an earlier tragedy in Jamie’s life. Obviously these two are going to have to work the hardest to find their HEA, right?

Well…maybe. Alison comes over a little too quickly to the other side, it feels like, mainly due to the power of being the mate of a shifter. I really wanted a bit more drama there. I was also amazed that Jamie wasn’t more concerned with finding his brother once he knew it was a possibility, since his disappearance from the beach all those years ago was a big part the reason he was now doing what he did. Though possibly Ms. Moone was just saving it for a future series book? 3 stars / C

The audio for all three were well done, except that for three books taking place entirely in Scotland and peopled by Scottish people (except for Clarice) why is it that the owner of the store she visits on her first day in the country is the only one who speaks with an accent? As an accent lover, that part was on the disappointing side…

Still, Ms. Moone has created an interesting world here (even if the idea of shifter mates is used a bit liberally to explain instalove times three), one I’d be more than willing to visit again!

Overall rating: 3 1/2 stars / C+

New Release Review and Giveaway! MAN OF MYSTERY by Lorelei Moone

Man of Mystery Tour Banner

Man of Mystery
by Lorelei Moone
Publication Date: July 6, 2016
Genres: Adult, Romantic Suspense, BBW

Synopsis:

What would you do if on your way home from your boring work, all of a sudden a handsome stranger leaps into the back of your car and asks you to drive him to the airport?

Be terrified? Threaten him and hope he gets out and leaves you alone? Those were my first instincts as well.

There was something in his eyes, something in the words he said that made me pause though. What if this beautiful man really did need my help? What if my refusal meant not only that his safety hung in the balance, but that of the entire country? So I drove him to Heathrow Airport, and my adventure began…

ManofMystery Teaser 3

Excerpt:

What would you say if I told you that there are some very bad people heading to Heathrow right now with a cargo that could destroy the world as we know it?” he says.

“I would ask if you’ve been drinking.” I continue to stare at him, but he’s unfazed by my reaction and smiles again. How is he so calm? This whole thing has got to be a joke.

“Fair enough.”

“And anyway if it’s Heathrow you’re headed for, you’d probably be faster walking at this rate.” I point forward at the traffic to emphasise my point.

“I’m sure you could find a faster route if you put your mind to it,” he responds while pointing at the left turn just ahead.

If I hurry, I can get out of the queue heading to the motorway and make my way through the housing estate until I get to the A30, and then… Wait, why should I help this clown?

“Why should I take you to Heathrow? You could be a lunatic. Or you could in fact be the person taking said terrible cargo to Heathrow yourself. I don’t know you!”

He looks up at me again, his eyes boring into me. There’s something about him that makes me want to trust him, but at the same time the sensible voice in my head insists I’m being an idiot.

“Look, I would show you my badge, but I don’t have it on me. This whole mess unfolded while I was off duty, my unit’s been compromised and time is of the essence.” His face is dead serious now, and I hesitate to argue with him any further, but still, it’s all so surreal I can’t just accept it.

“What unit? You can’t expect to just invade a stranger’s car and commandeer it to take you to the airport. I’ve had a trying day and am just trying to get home, OK? I can’t get involved in some crazy plot…”

“Shh… look straight ahead. We’re probably being watched and I don’t want you drawing attention to me in the back here. If I had another option I wouldn’t have gotten in, but I didn’t.”

I give him one more glance and then look forward while scanning the surroundings from the corner of my eye. I don’t see anyone watching… There’s a guy waiting at the bus stop, but seems to be fiddling with his phone.

“There’s nobody there, just the guy at the bus stop.”

“Is he wearing black commando boots?”

“I don’t know, I can’t see properly from here. Yes. Maybe.” I squint to get a better look, even though he’s still focused on his phone and as such totally harmless.

“There you go. If he’s wearing boots, he’s one of them.” The stranger shuffles around behind me, bumping into my seat.

Although I do my best to stay straight, I can’t see what he’s doing from the mirror and my nerves get the better of me so I turn around real quick anyway. “What the fuck? Is that a real gun?” I turn fully now, shocked at what I’m seeing. “Now what, you’re going to threaten me so I take you to the airport? Hell no, I can’t deal with this today, I just can’t.”

“Shush!” he hisses. “Yes it’s a gun. No, I’m not threatening you, it’s for protection in case the guy spots us. Now if you don’t mind taking that turn and getting the hell out of here, I’d really appreciate it.”

“I… He’s just on the phone… I think you’re overreacting.” I look up again, but the man in the boots is no longer waiting at the bus stop. Panic washes over me at once. Shit, what if this guy is right? I slam the car into first, release the clutch way too quickly, making the car jump and squeal ahead and take the left turn into the residential area. I think I can see that man running after the car in my rear view mirror, but perhaps that’s just my mind playing tricks on me.

Man of Mystery Teaser 1

Review:

What a fun read!

I grew up obsessing over watching Scarecrow and Mrs. King, so this story was right up my alley. Ordinary girl drawn into the world of espionage by super-hot agent? Yes, please! Terribly realistic? Not really? Insta-lust turning to insta-ish love? Sure. But it’s fun fantasy, so I was willing to go with it every step of the way. I liked both Tess and Liam and enjoyed the breakneck pace of the story. Tess’s work woes were solved in a purely satisfying way as well.

Tempted to go get stuck in rush hour traffic across the pond… 😉

If this is going to be a series, I’d definitely sign up for book two!

There was something in his eyes, something in the words he said that made me pause though. What if this beautiful man really did need my help? What if my refusal meant not only that his safety hung in the balance, but that of the entire country? So I drove him to Heathrow Airport, and my adventure began…

EXCERPT:

“Happy now?” I complain, while steering the car through the tight zig-zagging roads, heading for the other side of the housing estate. “Heathrow it is. What terminal?”

“Uhh…”

“Don’t tell me you don’t know? Do you have any idea how huge Heathrow is?” I exclaim.

“Give me a moment.”

I turn to find the stranger looking at a phone-type device, just fatter, like a handheld satnav thing for hikers. My ex had something similar he took on treks.

“Four. Terminal 4.”

“Great.” I put my foot down as I join the A30, all the while keeping an eye on my speedo which is close to touching fifty miles an hour. “How much time do we have?”

“Not much. Do your best,” he says, while giving me a quick pat on the shoulder. I don’t know whether it’s the adrenaline coursing through my body, or the fact that actually he’s pretty hot for a crazy person, but his touch has an instant effect on me. I must be losing my mind to let this guy affect me at all.

“Fine. But if I get a ticket, I’m telling them you drove. I’ve got six points on my licence already and the insurance company will have me over a barrel if I get more,” I ramble, my voice trembling slightly.

He lets out a chuckle and pats my shoulder again. “Deal. Now go.”

He was right, once I put my mind to it, our progress towards Heathrow has greatly improved. I know these roads like the back of my hand, even if I still compulsively slow down at the speed camera leading up to the Terminal 4 ramp. I’m in this now, whether I want to be or not, but still I’m not willing to blatantly speed through a speed trap.

“We’ll reach it soon, then what? Do I park up, or what?”

I check my mirror, seeing that he’s sitting upright now, staring out the rear window.

“Actually, let me out just there.” He points at the mini roundabout ahead of us. “The cargo is headed for flight SV118 departing for Riyadh at eighteen-fifty. I’m going to try and intercept it. Pull over.”

I slam on the brakes and turn to face him properly. His face is tense yet determined, as he gazes ahead through the metal fence surrounding the cargo area ahead of us.

“What’s your name?” he asks, leaning forward and making eye contact again.

“Tess…” I mumble, severely distracted by the green depths in front of me again. Shit, why do I have a knack for attracting crazies? He’s handsome though, the strong jawline, dark brown hair and symmetrical features are practically perfect. He could be a model, or an actor. Could all this just be an act?

“Tess. I know I’m asking a lot of you, but your country needs you.” He pauses, his eyes lingering on my lips for a moment. “We can’t let the plane leave. Give me your phone.”

I hand it to him without protest. How is it that his eyes can hypnotise me like this? Shit, I must be desperate to be so easily distracted by a handsome guy in a suit. Once all this is over, I’m going to get Maggie to set me up with someone. She’s been offering for weeks.

The stranger types a number into my phone and hits ‘dial’, then gives it back to me.

“I need you to go into the terminal and keep an eye on the departures board. If I’m successful, it will show up as delayed. If not, then you’ll see its status change to ‘boarding’ at around eighteen-twenty. If that’s the case, I need you to call in a bomb threat to shut down the terminal. Do you understand?” He reaches out for my cheek, caressing it with the back of his finger and causing even more upheaval inside my stomach. This has got to be a dream, even if it feels totally real.

I nod though. If the plane boards, I call the airport with a bomb threat. Sounds easy.

“Wait, why don’t you just report a bomb threat anyway? Why go through all this nonsense?” I ask.

He smiles briefly, pulling his hand back. “If I go in by myself, I may be able to detain some of the people involved. They may have intel. If I call it in now and the airport gets shut down, they’ll run and we may never know who was behind it.”

That makes sense, I guess.

I nod. “Fine. I’ll go in.”

“I’ll be in touch if it went well.”

“And if not?” I ask.

“Chances are, then I’ll be dead.”

MAN OF MYSTERY – CHAPTER 1
What a day. I sigh and rest my forehead against the steering wheel. After getting called in for my semi-annual appraisal and having all my achievements from the past six months swept under the rug because Karen took credit for them, I can’t imagine how today could get any worse.

Of course, traffic can always worsen any day. It’s warm, too warm to be driving a twenty-year-old rust-bucket without air conditioning. And opening the window does nothing except let in more hot air and fumes from the thousands of cars surrounding me in what has got to be a record for west London. The traffic is spectacularly horrible for a Thursday.

Can’t I catch a fucking break?

I pick up my mobile and after scanning the surrounding vehicles, I figure it’s safe enough to make a call. No coppers around at the moment. The last thing I need is another ticket.

“Hey, Maggie?” I say, greeting the groggy voice on the other end of the line.

“Yeah, Tess, what’s up?”

“Nothing. Same old, life’s a bitch. Shall we go out tonight? I could use the distraction.” The car ahead of me moves but I decide it’s not worth the effort to put mine in first gear, just to creep ahead four feet.

“Sounds great, but I have a date, and then straight to work. Another day perhaps?” Maggie yawns on the other end. Typical, ever since she’s started working the midnight shift at the airport, her routine has been all over the place.

“A date, huh? I’m jealous. Who’s the lucky guy?” I ask, even though I already suspect it’s that guy she works with, Alec, whom she’s been going on about nonstop lately.

“I finally decided enough is enough and asked out Alec. You know nowadays you can’t sit back and wait for men to make the first move. That’s all in the past. The dating scene is all about equal opportunities.”

“Mhm, if you say so. I guess I’m a bit old-fashioned that way.” Which is probably why I haven’t had a date in months.

“Say, you wanna talk about what’s going on? I have a little while before I need to start getting ready.”

“Thanks. Well, as I said. Same old.” I sigh, and squeeze the bridge of my nose to get rid of the beginnings of a tension headache.

“Your boss, Frank-something still bothering you?”

“No, I mean yes. Sort of. I had my appraisal today. Can you believe it? Of all my suggestions which were actually implemented these past six months, none of that was mentioned. That tart I told you about, Karen, presented everything like it was her idea, after making me do the groundwork. And now it looks like I’ve been doing fuck all and I’m not pulling my weight,” I rant.

“I see. Same old indeed. What can you do? People like her will do anything to get ahead, even if it means trampling those in her way. Keep calm, bide your time and return the favor or find another job. No other option.”

“Another job where? I ought to be grateful I have one at all with the way things have been going.” I take a deep breath and grip the steering wheel tighter until my knuckles turn white. I wonder if things ever get easier.

“True. If you ever change your mind on shift work, I could ask around at work?”

“Thanks, Maggie. That’s very sweet. I’ll let you know.” I’m getting desperate, but I’m not ready to work nights. Yet.

“Sure thing, Tess. OK, I’d better have a shower and all. I want to look my best for tonight.”

“Break a leg. And if he turns out to be a dick, I’ll break both of his.”

“Cheers. I’ll let you know how it goes.”

I put down the phone again, feeling slightly better after venting to Maggie. What are friends for, eh? The space in front of my car has opened up even further and I finally do pull ahead.

Metal boxes in all shapes and sizes as far as the eye can see. Perhaps there’s an accident up ahead. It’s going to take at least an hour to get to the motorway from here in this mess. That means I won’t make it home until God knows when.

Urgh. I rest my head back on the steering, wondering if anyone would notice if I had a short nap behind the wheel.

The click of my rear door followed by a gust of air causes a cold shiver to creep down my spine. Someone’s behind me!

“What the hell?” I instinctively snatch up my handbag and phone from the passenger seat while turning around as best I can to face the intruder.

“Shh…” The man cowering half on the back seat makes a calming motion with his hand, but doesn’t look directly at me. My heart is hammering in my throat, threatening to make me freeze up, but I react almost on autopilot anyway.

“Get out! Get the hell out of my car!” I shout, while rummaging furiously in my purse. “I have pepper spray.” My fingers grasp a small deodorant bottle. “And I’m not afraid to use it!”

“Be careful with that, if you blind yourself we’re both done for.” His gentle and calm tone surprises me. If he’s trying to mug me, he’s got a strange technique.

“I… what do you mean, we’re both done for?” I’m still pointing the deodorant bottle in his general direction, but am suddenly not so sure I want to spray him with it.

“I need you to drive. I swear I have a good reason to get into your car. Also, you’ve got that the wrong way around.”

My fingers shake even more intensely as he reaches out for the can, and twists the nozzle in his direction.

“There.”

“Shit. I’m sorry. Thanks. I mean…” Why the hell am I apologizing to this criminal? Still, I feel like a total idiot for threatening to spray him with what is essentially perfume. I suppose it would hurt if it ends up in his eye, but it’s not quite mace, is it? I lower my hand and take a proper look at him.

The stranger is still sort of hiding half in the foot well and half on the seat, skittishly looking out the window, while sneaking glances in my direction. He doesn’t look like a mugger. But then, I’ve never been mugged, how would I know what a mugger looks like?

Still, his suit and shirt make him look more like a businessman than a criminal. Or a waiter perhaps.

“Good thing you’re no longer intent on making me smell like… Lush Lavender, is it? Yeah. Not really my style,” he says with a subtle smile on his face.

A joke, really? Now?

“There’s no accounting for taste,” I respond, while keeping my gaze fixed on his eyes. Green, bright, focused. “Now, if you don’t mind explaining yourself.”

“Of course.
