Cover of Night
by Laura Griffin

Sparks fly when a journalist and a Navy SEAL cross paths in Thailand in this third entry in the thrilling and sexy Alpha Crew series from New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin.

Journalist Karly Bonham is on her first overseas mission, covering the new United States ambassador to Thailand, when she is taken hostage by terrorists, with only her wits and courage to keep her alive—until help arrives in the form of Navy SEAL Ethan Dunn.

As part of an elite SEAL team called Alpha Crew, Ethan has been on countless harrowing missions, but he knows this one is different the instant he meets Karly—the sexy young reporter who somehow managed to escape the terrorists’ clutches. Ethan is impressed by her, especially when he learns she has intel that could be the key to a successful rescue op. Ethan knows working with a civilian raises the stakes on an already dangerous mission. But with the clock ticking down, he enlists Karly’s help to thwart a vicious plot and bring a terrorist mastermind to justice.

Cover of Night is a fast-paced, quick read–right from the start, it’s a high-adrenaline rush with terrorists and SEALs and danger around every corner. I really liked both Karly and Ethan–they were really good together–but then I’d have to remind myself that they’d just met. (Yes, there’s a longish stretch of time in there, but as he’s out of town on a mission, it barely seems to count, so…) Still, I liked them as a couple and would have loved to have seen more of them together. This book definitely could have been expanded into a full-length novel and given us more of…well, everything. Still, if a high-adrenaline read you can get through in a sitting or two with some smoking hot chemistry is what you’re looking for to fit into your busy weekend, look no further 🙂

This is the third book in the series, but it worked well as a standalone. Ryan (hero of books 1 and 2–At the Edge and Edge of Surrender) plays a role in the initial mission, and we hear enough about him and Emma to make me add both books to my TBR. I’ll definitely be looking for more from this series in the future, and that teaser for the next Tracers book at the end (Touch of Red) has me counting the days until November!

New Release Review and Giveaway! TEMPTING TRISTAN by Melissa Foster (Harborside Nights #3)

Title: Tempting Tristan
Series: Harborside Nights
Author: Melissa Foster
Genre: A sexy standalone M/M Romance
Release Date: October 19, 2016

Tempting Tristan is a stand-alone M/M romance featuring two sexy, hot alphas.

Fresh off the heels of yet another bad relationship, Tristan Brewer is taking a break from men to try and figure out where he keeps going wrong. He knows his biggest fault–he leads with his heart, not his head–and that’s never going to change. But after several introspective weeks, he’s beginning to get a handle on things. That is, until badass heartthrob Alex Wells walks into his bar…

Alex has spent eight years in the Army, months in a hospital bed, and far too long hiding his sexual identity. He’s guilt-ridden, damaged, pissed off, and up for a Silver Star–for the incident that nearly cost him his life, and kept him from his grandmother’s funeral. But all he wants to do is forget his stint with the institution that allows but doesn’t necessarily accept, and live the life he’s always dreamed of.

The chemistry between Tristan and Alex ignites from the moment they meet, and the more time they spend together the hotter the flames become. But the closer Tristan gets, the more Alex’s walls go up, and when the two walk onto a military base, Tristan finds out Alex’s physical scars aren’t the ones that run the deepest.

Excerpt from Tempting Tristan (A sexy standalone M/M romance)
© Melissa Foster 2016
She rolls her pretty green eyes. “No, Tristan. Because the hottest man on the planet just parked his motorcycle and he’s heading in here. All of my female customers are drooling, and I’m sure you’ll see a flock of them coming in any minute now. Meanwhile, I’m stuck outside and soon I’ll have a pier full of empty tables.” She grabs a handful of napkins and waves them at me with a smirk. “Drool rags.”“Dibs,” Charley says as she whips up a cocktail.

I laugh and hold my hands up. “I’m on a hiatus from all things male, so be my guest.” My ex, Ian, is a self-absorbed ass, and I was an idiot for letting him treat me like shit. Which is why I’m taking a break from men—even if it kills me. It’s been weeks since we broke up and I moved into my buddy Wyatt’s house. Wyatt and his twin sister, Delilah, own the Taproom. They inherited it when their parents were killed in a car accident a little more than a year ago.

“I’m sure he’s straight anyway,” Livi says. “The guy swaggers like a stud.”

“Hey, gay guys can swagger like studs,” I tease.

“I know that.” Livi peers out the pass-through window to the outside seating area and tosses her blond hair over her shoulder. “You’ll see what I mean. He’s a total badass.”

I tend to my customers as the girls discuss the badass hot guy, and when the front door opens, I can’t help but let my eyes drift over. Livi and Charley fall silent, ogling what truly might be the hottest guy on the planet. Linebacker shoulders fill the doorframe. The godlike creature is carrying a shiny black motorcycle helmet in one very large hand. His white T-shirt is stretched so tight across his chest I can see every ripple of his shredded abs, and his deliciously defined biceps are seriously struggling to be set free from his short sleeves.Tear, baby, tear.

He steps inside and runs a hand through his dirty-blond hair. Deep-set, brooding eyes slide over the customers sitting at the bar, sweep over Charley and Livi, and finally land on me. Charley whimpers, and Livi makes a sound in the back of her throat, both mimicking what I’m feeling, though my mouth is too dry to make a sound.

Sweet and sexy!

Tristan and Alex are an adorable couple, even if they do fall in love awfully quickly (total insta-love alert…) The main conflicts in the story come from Alex–the difficulties he’s having dealing with the lasting implications of the life-changing injuries he suffered as a solider and the mindset of “lock down, shut up, act straight” that he felt he had to personify during his eight years in the Army. I thought Ms. Foster did a nice job of getting us into his head and showing us the effect these things had on him (OMG, when he visits the pediatric clinic? Tears. So many tears over here), though here too, things got a bit fast-tracked at the end. The healing power of love worked really, really quickly for him…

Tristan, other than having had horrible taste in men up until this point, is basically the perfect partner. I kind of wanted him to reveal a flaw or two along the way, but other than getting a little testy about Alex hiding their relationship when they were back on a military base at one point (which again, he got over pretty fast–“fast” being an ongoing theme here), he was essentially Mr. Perfect Boyfriend from start to finish. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing–they are a great couple and I did enjoy reading the book from start to finish–but the angst factor definitely could have been upped a degree…or five.

Tempting Tristan is the third in the Harborside Nights series, and fifty-seventh(!) in the Love in Bloom one, but it still worked fine as a standalone. As in every other Melissa Foster book I’ve read so far, characters from past books do play a part, making you aware that there’s definitely other stories going on/recently happened out there, but you’ll do perfectly fine not knowing all the details.

Yet. 😉

Though I’ve gotta say, Tempting Tristan does have me pretty anxious to get to Charley and Brandon’s stories (Chasing Charley and Breaking Brandon –out soon, but not nearly soon enough!)

New Release Review! THE MARINE’S EMBRACE by Beth Andrews (In Shady Grove #7)

The Marine’s Embrace
by Beth Andrews

If only he had something to give her…besides love

He’s only looking for a room and a fresh start, but Zach finds more than he’d bargained for when he checks into Fay Lindemuth’s bed-and-breakfast. The single mom intrigues him with her quiet strength and gentle beauty. He knows he should keep his distance from Fay and her young sons. Not only is she still hung up on her ex-husband, but as an ex-marine, Zach Castro has no idea what he can offer them. No matter how much he begins to feel for her…

Phew–this one was a tough one to read at times. A very realistic (or so it appears from the outside, anyway) portrayal of depression–sometimes it was all too easy to be tempted to adapt the attitude of Fay’s friends and family: why can’t she just leave her ex at the curb, already? Get over him and move on? OMG, especially at the beginning I just wanted to shake her–but yeah, I completely understand why she had to find her way to putting him in the past by herself. I loved watching her discover her inner strength (mostly) on her own–Zach helped point her in the right direction, definitely, but it was very much Fay’s own struggle and triumph. Their romance is almost an afterthought to the bigger struggles they’re both dealing with–her depression, toxic ex, and dependence on others; his moving on with his life after losing an arm and a leg in the Marines–but truly, that’s how it needed to be. There’s much more to them finding their HEA than just discovering the right person to make that journey with.

Though I’d really like to see more of them as they continue on their way–perhaps Josie could have her own book, and Fay and Zach could be secondary characters? (And that’s something I never thought I’d even consider at the beginning of this one, since Josie’s the nineteen-year-old Fay’s reprehensible ex impregnated and then left in a hotel room far from everything she knew…but hey, right in the same town as his ex and their two kids. Total prince…though Josie herself didn’t quite seem like a sympathetic character at first. Until suddenly, she was.)

I definitely appreciated the fact that Fay’s two boys weren’t model children. The oldest was a bit of a mouthy brat used to getting his own way, and the youngest had a tendency to be on the timid side (though he could give his brother as good as he got when needed). It all fit with their mother’s self esteem issues and struggles with depression. Underneath it all, they’re sweet boys–hopefully as Fay continues to grow stronger and under Zach’s positive influence they’ll straighten up. They showed promise when Zach let them help in the kitchen (some of my favorite scenes, btw.)

I’ve gotten behind in the In Shady Grove series–clearly it’s time to catch up!

New Release Review! TO HAVE AND TO HOLD by Serena Bell (Returning Home #3)

To Have and to Hold
by Serena Bell

In this emotionally charged novel from the bestselling author of Hold on Tight (“Sweet, sexy, and real.”—Jessica Scott), a war hero fights to remember the love he left behind—and the woman who refuses to fade away.

The reunion is supposed to be the start of the rest of their lives. But when Trina Levine sees the soldier she promised to love forever, Hunter Cross looks at her like she’s a stranger. The connection is gone, lost in the blank stare of those soulful brown eyes. Hunter remembers his young daughter but not Trina, and he certainly can’t recall why Trina and her own child are living in his house. Although his lean, rugged frame bears the scars of battle, his mind took the worst hit.

But Hunter Cross hasn’t forgotten everything. His body remembers caressing Trina’s delicate curves, holding her close, never wanting to let go. Was it just a dream, or was it real life? Now, as he tries to put the pieces back together, Trina’s the one who comforts him when his night terrors strike. It’s Trina whose warm touch rekindles a connection no man could deny. Even with the odds stacked against them, Hunter wants to believe. Because passion has the power to awaken the past—and remake the future.

OMG. So. Good!

I honestly had a hard time putting this one down–except during the parts where things got totally intense, when I really needed to take a break and decompress…and even then, I was back about thirty seconds later, unable to wait and see what was going to happen next.

“I know my feelings, and they’re not going to change.”

Gah! Remember that line…because it takes Hunter a really, really long time to.

This has got to be one of the best–if not the best–uses of the amnesia troupe out there. Poor Hunter doesn’t even realize for quite some time that he has holes in his memory–his brain has developed such a clever loop that he believes everything is hunky dory (except for the brand new, impressive scars he’s sporting) until he gets home and finds that life is not quite as he thought it was. His mom has a new boyfriend he should remember, but doesn’t. His daughter has grown and changed more than a year’s worth of growing and changing. And his dead wife’s good friend and her daughter have moved into his home…and he doesn’t remember asking them to and can’t imagine why he would have.

Seeing things from Trina’s POV is heartbreaking–it took so much for her to trust him in the first place, when everything in her was screaming “Don’t do it! Men leave! Love doesn’t last!” and having it all torn away just as she’d started to depend on them? Devastating.

Seeing things from Hunter’s perspective isn’t any easier to read either, because not only is he confused as heck about what’s going on and totally frustrated, he’s also practically drowning in guilt–guilt over his former wife, guilt over missing chunks of his daughter and mother’s lives, and guilt over the pain he can see he’s causing Trina.

And then there’s the girls–Hunter’s daughter Clara and Trina’s daughter Phoebe–they were already BFFs before Hunter left, and now they’re more like sisters than ever. Hunter and Trina’s estrangement tears them apart too, in more ways than one.

I wasn’t sure Ms. Bell was going to be able to fix this situation…but holy cow, did she ever. It. Was. Brilliant.

I may have cheered. And cried, just a little. There may also have been a bit of spontaneous clapping.

Definitely my favorite of the series so far. If there’s going to be a fourth (and there is a single guy hanging around our Returning Home heroes, so I am optimistic!) it has a lot to live up to 🙂

To Have and to Hold is the third in the series, but it would work well as a standalone. The heroes and heroines from books 1 and 2 (Hold on Tight and  Can’t Hold Back) do play small roles, but if you haven’t read their stories yet you won’t be at too much of a disadvantage.

But your TBR will probably grow by at least 2 more.

A Conversation and Giveaway with Annie Rains, Author of WELCOME TO FOREVER (A Hero’s Welcome #1)

Enter to Win a $50.00 Amazon eGift Card and a Select Print Romance Book Bundle

Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today, Annie!

Thank you for having me! I’m excited to be here!

What 5 things should readers know about you?

Hmm. 1) I’m a working mother of three 2) I am a hopeless romantic and love all things romance, including novels, chick flicks, soap operas, etc. 3) I love the rain. The fact that my husband’s last name is Rains is one of the first things that got me to notice him 4) I still live in the small town that I grew up in, and 5) I love to hear other people’s stories. The stories of others fascinates me. I’m a watcher and a listener.

Nice list!

Tell us all about your main characters—who are they? What makes them tick? Most importantly, what one thing would they need to have with them if stranded on a desert isle? 😉

My heroine is Kat Chandler. She’s faced huge heartache in her past, but she’s tough. She’s not afraid to meet challenges head on. She’s the local elementary school’s principal and she’s got a huge heart for others. She’s an optimist until the end. If stranded on a desert isle the one thing she’d need would be some kind of connection to her friends. A phone? Her best friend Val and sister Julie are definitely her life lines.

Sergeant Micah Peterson is a single father Marine, whose number 1 priority is his son, Ben. Micah carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. It’s tough for him to share that weight with anyone because he’s been burned by others one too many times. Micah relaxes by dabbling in landscape design. On a desert isle, Micah would need his gardening tools.

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

It started in my mind as the story of a woman who was reluctant to remove her engagement ring. That started me wondering what happened to her fiancé. As I delved deeper, the story evolved. I realized that Kat Chandler had been through a lot and deserved a happily ever after. So I gave her one.

Wow—nice story!

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I’ve been writing since I was a little girl. The earliest story I remember writing was at age six. It was about monsters under my bed. I’m not sure who inspired me to become a writer. I think I realized early on how much I loved writing. When I realized that the books on my shelves were written by real people, I decided I wanted my stories to be on shelves, too.

I like it 🙂

What do you like best about being a writer? What is the most challenging part?

I like the end product. There’s a sense of huge accomplishment when you’ve finished writing a book. I can’t describe the wonderful feeling, but you immediately want to set forth and do it again. Doing it again is the challenging part! It’s not easy to get from page 1 to page 300!

I hear you! 🙂

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I’m finishing up edits for book 3 in this series, Welcoming the Bad Boy, which is my personal favorite so far. After that, I’m not sure. I have several other stories competing for attention in my mind. I usually let those ideas marinate and decide which one interests me the most. Or, like in Welcome to Forever, I decide which hero or heroine deserves to find their happily ever after the most.

Love the title!

What authors and/or books have inspired you?

Kristan Higgins. Lori Wilde. Jill Shalvis. Nora Roberts. The list goes on and on. I love so many authors out there. Danielle Steele was a big influence for me when I first started writing romance. I couldn’t read her books fast enough in college! I still love to read Danielle Steele books.

Great list!

What are you currently reading? What are your thoughts about it so far?

I’m juggling my attention between Lori Wilde’s latest Christmas book,iIll be Home for Christmas, and a parenting book. I’m loving both for different reasons!

If you had to “sell” this book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

He represents a past she swore she’d never repeat. And a future she desperately wants. –WELCOME TO FOREVER.

Nice work!

A Hero’s Welcome Book One
Annie Rains
Releasing Dec 1st, 2015
If you love Kristan Higgins, Susan Mallery, or Jill Shalvis, you won’t want to miss the Hero’s Welcome military romance series! Welcome to Forever introduces a small coastal town where America’s best and brightest risk everything for love.
In Seaside, North Carolina, there are two kinds of people: Marines, and kids of Marines. Then there’s Kat Chandler. Recently hired as the principal of Seaside Elementary, Kat makes it her mission to turn the school into a place of peace and calm. That’s not going to be easy with hard-liner parents like Micah Peterson storming in, telling her how to do her job—and then kissing her with those gorgeous lips of his and turning her brain into mush.
As a Marine Sergeant and a single dad, Micah Peterson has just two priorities: doing his job better than anyone else, and getting the absolute best for his son, Ben. But when he meets Ben’s beautiful new principal, a different yearning shifts into focus. He wants her,
sure, but he’s also moved by the connection Kat forges with her students. So after learning that she refuses to date Marines, Micah sets two more objectives: convincing Kat to give him a chance . . . and then holding on to her forever.

“Have you thought about that kiss?” she asked, as he leaned in close to fasten her seatbelt. She couldn’t control what was coming out of her mouth. “Because I have. A little.” She started laughing again. Val had warned her that she was a horrible drunk, and evidently, it was true.

“What have you thought about it?” he asked, his voice low and bristly. Her buckle snapped into place with a loud click. He could step back now, but he didn’t.

And she didn’t want him to. What was the point of being drunk if you couldn’t say and do what you wanted, and then apologize for it in the morning? No one blamed a drunk, they blamed the drink. “I thought that I liked it. The kiss. It was amazing.” She held her breath as he lingered in front of her, his hand still resting on the seat’s buckle.

“I thought the same thing.”

“You did?” She swallowed thickly, as her heart rode up her throat.

His brow lifted. “You sound surprised.”

“I’m out of practice.” She nibbled on her lower lip, drawing his gaze there. Then his gaze flicked back to her ring. Just the thought squashed the flutterings in her chest, leaving a deep ache that vibrated with the alcohol. “He’s been gone for two years,” she said.

Micah’s brows pinched together softly.

Explaining about John in her state wasn’t a good idea, though. She might start crying, which she didn’t do in front of others anymore, and right now all she wanted to do was forget everything but their kiss. That she wanted to remember. “You could kiss me again,” she said softly.

His smile deepened and, damn, he smelled good.

Leaning in closer to her ear, his hot breath melted her as he whispered, “Kat, you’ve had too much to drink. I’m taking you home now.”

Before she could process what he’d said, he stepped back and shut the Jeep’s door, the sound as offensive as if someone had crashed cymbals in her ears. A moment later, he reappeared on the driver’s side and cranked the engine, another sound that made her wince.

She closed her eyes, unsure of what to do with her drunken emotions.

“If I kiss you again, I want to be one hundred percent sure it’s what you want. Not because my almost ex is walking up and you want to help me out. Not because you’ve had too much to drink and want to escape.”

She suddenly felt very tired, as the Jeep Cherokee headed out of the parking lot. “So, you are going to kiss me again?” she asked. Before she could hear his answer, though, her eyes closed and the sounds of the road and his voice, and the blood thundering in her head, blurred together. She remembered their kiss, the feel of his stubble roughly brushing against her cheek, and the way he had smelled like pine and fudge brownies.

No, wait. His eyes reminded her of fudge brownies. He didn’t smell like them.

Her eyes fluttered open. Yeah, she was definitely going to regret tonight in the morning.

New Release Review! TARGET ENGAGED by M.L. Buchman (Delta Force #1)

Target Engaged
by M.L. Buchman
Delta Force #1
Military Romantic Suspense

Kyle Reeves was trained by his father to do one thing: be the very best. So he isn’t daunted by the Delta Force selection process—the toughest military training on earth—or when the very best woman falls into his arms.

Carla Anderson buried her heart in Arlington when she lost her mother and brother to combat. She wants nothing more than to give her all in the line of duty until she too is laid down beside them, and Delta training might just be the challenge she’s looking for. Little did she know, the true challenge was coming in the shape of a sexy, alpha-male military operative.

Surviving brutal training is just the beginning of the merciless path to Delta, but it’s also the dawn of the hottest passion Kyle and Carla have ever known…

What a fantastic series start! I felt like I was going through the Delta selection, OCT, and their first missions right along with the characters (though thank goodness I wasn’t actually, because I am waaaay to wimpy to make it). Watching the first woman in Delta make the cut was inspiring, even if it’s only fictional–for now.

I loved Carla–her attitude, her ability to think on a dime, and the way she was able to hold her own with the guys–just awesome. Watching her learn about “girl clothes” and how to use her feminine wiles? Very entertaining.

And Kyle? Well, he’s definitely my new military-hero book boyfriend. Though “Mister Kyle” and “Wild Woman” are just so perfect together, I feel almost guilty about that.

Almost. 😉

Mr. Buchman definitely knows how to ramp up the suspense, and he did it here in spades. It was literally impossible to put the book down toward the end–I had to find out how they were going to get themselves out of the situation they found themselves in.

I cannot wait for more from this series! Hopefully he’ll give us more from this team–and the next class as well (another female unit member–whooo hoo!)

Oh, my.

He was gorgeous.

Wasn’t he gorgeous?

She thought so, but the room had taken a nice, slow spin so which she was sure accounted for the sudden dizziness filling her head and the odd tightness in her belly. Resting her hand on the doorframe, Lark blinked a couple of times so she could see him more clearly.

And oh, boy, was she glad she did.

Because she’d been right. He was gorgeous. Sara had been right, he definitely had a little Greek god in there somewhere.

Tall, close to a foot over her own five-four, he a swimmer’s build. Broad shoulders, a slender waist and long, long legs. The kind of body that would look might sweet naked but for a gleaming coat of oil.

His dark brown hair was cut super short, the top spiked in a way that looked like he’d ran his hands through it’s thickness while it was wet and left it at that. Unlike Sara’s round sweetness, her brother’s face was narrow, with slashing brows and a full mouth.

Oh, that mouth. Those lips. Mmm. Lark wet her lips while imagining doing the same to his. She was pretty sure she could spend hours nibbling on that bottom lip of his and still not be satisfied.

She’d bet if he were doing the nibbling, her satisfaction would be guaranteed. She didn’t know if it was all the talk of sex today, or if he was simply the most desirable man she’d ever seen in her life. Either or both got credit for the images flooding her mind.

The two of them, naked. Oh yeah, she’d bet he was even better naked. Long, lean and luscious, he’d know what to do with his body. Better yet, he’d know what to do with hers. She’d bet he could do things she’d only read about in those sexy romance novels.

A quick, steamy read!

I really liked Shane as a hero–I loved his devotion to his job and to his team. Their camaraderie was fantastic, and definitely makes me want to read more from the series. He was very sweet with Lark–except when he was being decidedly not sweet, which was fun too 😉 I admired his loyalty to his family, even when they were being over-the-top crazy about his career choice.

(Which leads me to…what the heck kind of parent decides her only living son is dead to her when he won’t quit the SEAL team he just earned his spot on when she demands it because his older brother has died in an accident? And what kind of sisters go along with the “Shane’s career doesn’t exist, and we’re barely going to acknowledge that he does either” game plan? Craziness. At least Sara was semi-normal. Ish.)

I liked Lark a lot–still grieving for her mom, she tried so hard to live up to her memory by keeping her coffee shop going, even though doing so meant that the job she loved, creating pottery, suffered as a result. She got a little wiggy at times herself, though–insisting she wasn’t suffering from survivor’s guilt when she had a textbook case, for example. Also, assuming that the guy she’d already admitted to herself she was in love with was buying a condo and wanted her to move across the country to live with him just so they could continue to have awesome sex, with no real relationship otherwise? Kinda crazy. Still, though–she pulls it together in the end and loses at least 95% of her looniness, redeeming herself. 😉

Together they were an adorable couple, even if they both tended toward cluelessness at times. And they broke Lark’s dry spell quite nicely, thankyouverymuch.

Everything was fixed up nicely and neatly in the end, if a bit abruptly–I still thought I had 7% of story left, but it ended up being an excerpt for another book. Still, this was an enjoyable read to wrap up the summer with.

New Release Review and Giveaway: ONCE UPON A SEAL (Lucky Thirteen #5)

The newest series book is now available!

Maddie Benson has spent her entire life in Sugar Falls and has never ventured—nor wanted to venture—beyond her small town’s safe borders. But when her delivery job takes her to the doorstep of one very reclusive, former Navy SEAL, Sebastian McIntyre, her small town perceptions are challenged with every conversation they have. It’s not long before she’s losing herself—and her heart—to the mysterious man behind the door.

Bastian’s scars are deeper than the surface. They’re embedded into his soul, and he’s content to keep them buried. But the second Maddie ends up on his doorstep with her sparkling smile and her sunshine hair, his quiet new life shatters and she just might be able to excise the demons he’s tried hard to keep tucked away—if he lets her in.

When Bastian’s old life comes haunting them, he knows he should let her go. But the light she shines on his soul keeps the darkness within him at bay. Letting her go may take more strength than he has, and keeping her close could get her killed.

Tommy’s Grocery was the only grocery store in Sugar Falls. We had a lot of older folks that lived out in the country, so I frequently ran out deliveries for them. But as I surveyed the contents of the delivery I had now, making sure I had them all, this wasn’t for one of the older couples, and I hadn’t recognized the name on the order either. Sebastian? It sounded like a younger guy. Why couldn’t a younger guy come get his own groceries?

And it wasn’t a particularly large order either. Lots of fruits, vegetables, a package of razors. So I imagined he was a clean-shaven health nut. Not that I cared either way. I got paid no matter what. And honestly, even though it was hot outside, I still liked getting the fresh air and not being stuck in the store all day.

The house wasn’t a rundown piece of crap like I expected, which was further evidence that it wasn’t an older man. The house was cute, gorgeous and had colorful flowers lining the front porch. Pretty walking stones framed the sides of the circular driveway. The grass was slightly overgrown, but mostly, the yard was well- landscaped. Someone spent hours on it regularly. This was not the work of a landscaper. This house was cared for with love, by someone who liked working with his hands.

Which only made me more curious of the owner.

I got out of my truck and grabbed the three bags from the passenger side. The heat beat down on me as I walked up. I rapped sharply on the door and waited. It was solid oak, with two rectangular window panes spanning half the height of the door. The decorative glass obscured a clear view of the inside, but I could see a vague shape of a man coming toward the entrance to the house.

But the door didn’t open. A gruff voice barked, “Who is it?”

“Maddie Benson. I have your delivery from Tommy’s.” As if for emphasis, I lifted one arm so he could see the shape of the bag through the decorative window.

“Just a sec.” His form moved away. A minute or two passed as I waited for him to return. He came back, and the chain rattled as he unlocked it. I started forward when the door cracked open, but he didn’t let it open. “Leave it on the mat.”

Slowly, I set the bags down. “Okay. Um… It’s twenty-five sixty.” I squinted my eyes to look through the glass, as if that would make it easier to see him.

His hand snaked around the door, holding a twenty and a ten. The hand was large, fitting the massive shape I could make out on the other side of the door. “Keep the change.”

I took the bills from him. “Thanks, um…” I glanced at the ticket in my hand, skimming over it quickly. “Mr. McIntyre.” I stopped. McIntyre? “You’re related to Jenny?”

The door slammed shut in answer.

I glared at the shut door. Wasn’t that just nice. Was this how he treated everyone or was I just special? I almost wanted to knock and tell him what an asshole he was, but instead, I turned and headed back to my truck.

A very short but sweet romance between a former SEAL who’s afraid to leave his house and a college student who’s afraid to leave her hometown…

Once Upon a SEAL definitely could have been longer–Maddie’s issues with leaving and going to a college where she could earn her teaching degree aren’t really resolved by the end, nor is what Bast’s going to do with his life, and the suspense part of the plot had a rushed feel to it. Still, it is an enjoyable way to pass the time–I really liked the idea of Maddie and Bastian falling for each other without ever having actually met face-to-face.

Plus, you just can’t go wrong with a story that has a beauty and the beast vibe going on.

It also works well as an introduction to the series, since Bastian’s contact with the rest of the men from his unit is reduced to phone calls with his former boss. You don’t really need to have read the rest of the series to understand this one, and Once Upon a SEAL can give you a taste of what the rest of the series will be like.
