EXCERPT:

Brody

Lunch block B is symbolic of our ruin:

Henry has joined forces with the jocks. He is a jock, so it makes complete sense. And he seems happy enough, which is good. He hasn’t looked at me once since the last night he slept in my bed— tucked between Danny and me—the day before he refused the offer of my Jeep keys. Henry had no interest in taking the Jeep for a final joyride. I respect him for that.

Danny has taken to eating upstairs with the artsy crowd. For all I know, he has his eye on Mr. Lansing. Mr. Lansing is middle-aged, kind of cute, and likely even gay. He’s nuts about Danny, if not way too old for him, but that’s par for the course in Danny’s life. He’s better than most of Danny’s boyfriends who came before.

As for me, I eat alone. It’s okay. I’m a loner, really. It’s cool. And I write this without any bitterness, which is hard to believe,

but it’s also true. I’m returning to my natural state, after an almost four-year break. High school was a pleasant interlude of connection in a life I’m meant to spend without anyone to answer to.

LOL. “Pleasant interlude” makes pain sound so inviting. But it’s all good. I like being alone. Time to stop being so dramatic. There are so many important things I’ve long neglected to do.

I’m ready to get started.

Author Bio:

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

New Release Review and Giveaway! THE LAWRENCE BROWNE AFFAIR by Cat Sebastian

Can they find forever in the wreckage of their lives?

THE LAWRENCE BROWNE AFFAIR
Cat Sebastian
Releasing Feb 7th, 2017
Avon Impulse
An earl hiding from his future . . .

Lawrence Browne, the Earl of Radnor, is mad. At least, that’s what he and most of the village believes. A brilliant scientist, he hides himself away in his family’s crumbling estate, unwilling to venture into the outside world. When an annoyingly handsome man arrives at Penkellis, claiming to be Lawrence’s new secretary, his carefully planned world is turned upside down.

A swindler haunted by his past . . .

Georgie Turner has made his life pretending to be anyone but himself. A swindler and con man, he can slip into an identity faster than he can change clothes. But when his long-dead conscience resurrects and a dangerous associate is out for blood, Georgie escapes to the wilds of Cornwall. Pretending to be a secretary should be easy, but he doesn’t expect that the only madness he finds is the one he has for the gorgeous earl.

Can they find forever in the wreckage of their lives?

Challenging each other at every turn, the two men soon give into the desire that threatens to overwhelm them. But with one man convinced he is at the very brink of madness and the other hiding his real identity, only true love can make this an affair to remember.

Cornwall, 1816

CHAPTER ONE

All this fuss about a couple of small explosions. As far as Lawrence cared, the explosions were entirely beside the point. He had finished experimenting with fuses weeks ago. More importantly, this was his house to burn to the ground if that’s what he wanted to do with it. Hell, if he blew the godforsaken place up, and himself right along with it, the only person who would even be surprised was the man sitting before him.

“Five servants quit,” Halliday said, tapping Lawrence’s desk in emphasis. Dust puffed up in tiny clouds around the vicar’s fingertips. “Five. And you were woefully understaffed even before then.”

Five fewer servants? So that was why the house had been so pleasantly quiet, why his work had been so blissfully undisturbed.

“There was no danger to the servants. You know I keep them away from my work.” That was something Lawrence insisted on even when he wasn’t exploding things. The very idea of chattering maids underfoot was enough to discompose his mind even further. “And I conducted most of the actual explosions out of doors.” Now was probably not the time to mention that he had blown the roof off the conservatory.

“All I’m suggesting is a sort of secretary.” Halliday was dangerously unaware of how close he was to witnessing an explosion of the metaphorical variety. “Somebody to keep records of what you’ve mixed together and whether it’s likely to”—he puffed his cheeks out and made a strange noise and an expansive gesture that Lawrence took to represent explosion—“ignite.”

The Reverend Arthur Halliday did not know what was good for him. If he did, he would have fled the room as soon as he saw Lawrence reach for the inkwell. Lawrence’s fingers closed around the object, preparing to hurl it at the wall behind the vicar’s head. Sod the man for even suggesting Lawrence didn’t know how to cause an explosion. He hadn’t invented Browne’s Improved Black Powder or even that bloody safety fuse through blind luck, for God’s sake.

“Besides,” Halliday went on, “you said you need an extra set of hands for this new device you’re working on.”

Oh, damn and blast. Lawrence knew he shouldn’t have told the vicar. But he had hoped Halliday might volunteer to help with the device himself, not badger Lawrence into hiring some stranger. The vicar was convenient enough, and when he wasn’t dead set on sticking his nose where it didn’t belong, he wasn’t entirely unpleasant company.

“I’ve had secretaries,” Lawrence said from between gritted teeth. “It ends badly.”

“Well, obviously, but that’s because you go out of your way to terrify them.” Halliday glanced pointedly at the inkwell Lawrence still held.

And there again was Halliday missing the point entirely. Lawrence didn’t need to go out of his way to frighten anyone. All he had to do was simply exist. Everyone with any sense kept a safe distance from the Mad Earl of Radnor, as surely as they stayed away from rabid dogs and coiled asps. And explosive devices, for that matter.

Except for the vicar, who came to Penkellis Castle three times a week. He likely also called on bedridden old ladies and visited the workhouse. Maybe his other charity cases were grateful, but the notion that he was the vicar’s good deed made Lawrence’s fingers curl grimly around the inkwell as he plotted its trajectory through the air.

“I’ll take care of the details,” Halliday was saying. “I’ll write the advertisement and handle the inquiries. A good secretary might even be able to manage the household a bit,” the vicar said with the air of a man warming to his topic, “get it into a fit condition for the child—”

“No.” Lawrence didn’t raise his voice, but he slammed his fist onto the desk, causing ink to splatter all over the blotter and the cuff of his already-inky shirt. A stack of papers slid from the desk onto the floor, leaving a single dustless patch of wood where they had been piled. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a spider scurry out from under the papers.

“True,” Halliday continued, undaunted. “A housekeeper would be more appropriate, but—”

“No.” Lawrence felt the already fraying edges of his composure unraveling fast. “Simon is not coming here.”

“You can’t keep him off forever, you know, now that he’s back in England. It’s his home, and he’ll own it one day.”

When Lawrence was safely dead and buried, Simon was welcome to come here and do what he pleased. “I don’t want him here.” Penkellis was no place for a child, madmen were not fit guardians, and nobody knew those facts better than Lawrence himself, who had been raised under precisely those conditions.

Halliday sighed. “Even so, Radnor, you have to do something about this.” He gestured around the room, which Lawrence thought looked much the same as ever. One hardly even noticed the scorch marks unless one knew where to look. “It can’t be safe to live in such a way.”

Safety was not a priority, but even Lawrence wasn’t mad enough to try to explain that to the vicar.

“Villagers won’t even walk past the garden wall anymore. And the stories they invent…” The vicar wrung his hands. “A secretary. Please. It would ease my mind to know you had someone up here with you.”

A keeper, then. Even worse.

But Lawrence did need another set of hands to work on the communication device. If Halliday wouldn’t help, then Lawrence had no other options. God knew Halliday had been right about the local people not wanting anything to do with him.

“Fine,” he conceded. “You write the advertisement and tell me when to expect the man.” He’d say what he needed to in order to end this tiresome conversation and send the vicar on his way.

It wasn’t as if this secretary would last more than a week or two anyway. Lawrence would see to that.

I really enjoyed Ms. Sebastian’s first book set in this universe ( The Soldier’s Scoundrel ) and was so happy to see that Georgie (Jack’s brother) was going to get a book–I’m thrilled to say it did not disappoint! Somehow, it was an even better read than Jack and Oliver’s book–and that’s saying something 🙂

Once again Ms. Sebastian gives us two characters who are absolutely delicious together, who don’t at all intend to at the beginning but end up making life for the other one worlds better at the story’s end. Georgie, who grew up in deplorable conditions, has been a highly effective con man for his entire life, but it’s never really sat right with him and lately has been developing a conscience, which has him at odds with the crime boss he’s worked for since forever. Lawrence grew up with an unstable and cruel father and brother and was told from an early age that his sexual orientation was shameful and wrong. He’s isolated himself in his (literally) crumbling ancestral home, behaving like a brilliant but more than a little mad scientist. He lives in fear that he really will go mad, as his father and brother did before him, and it colors almost everything he does.

Together these two were just magic. Both their friendship and their relationship was slow moving but oh so satisfying, and I loved watching Georgie sllloooowly make Lawrence’s home, his very existence better and more comfortable. And then the last 20% when Lawrence returned the favor? OMG. I was completely unable to stop reading from that point to the very end, for any reason at all. So. Good. Throw in some wonderfully humorous writing and great secondary characters (Simon! Uncle Courtenay, hero of book 3!) and you have an all-around fantastic read.

Excerpt from SINGLE MALT:

There was a scraping sound and when next Walker spoke, he was closer, his hot breath coasting across Aidan’s neck. “Why don’t you show me some of these dance moves?”

Aidan whipped his head around, bringing them nose-to-nose. “Don’t be ridiculous.”

“I’m serious.” Walker grinned, the temptation and levity in his bright blue eyes chasing away the sorrow of the day, of the past eight months. “Impress me,” he said, using Aidan’s own words against him.

“Whiskey,” he warned, low and tight, fighting his instincts.

“Come on, it’s just us here.”

Glancing over his shoulder, Aidan confirmed the other couple was gone, Roy was nowhere to be seen, and the only two waiters left sat folding napkins in the private room.

Walker, standing between their stools, inched closer and laid his hand over Aidan’s again. “Dance with me, Talley.”

Hooked, the offered comfort reeled Aidan in. Tugging his hand, Walker pulled him off the stool and into his arms. As they swayed gently to the music, it wasn’t dancing with Isabella Aidan remembered but dancing with Gabe after their wedding. Held in Walker’s arms, knowing what he did now about his partner’s orientation, Aidan allowed himself to notice the physical similarities between Walker and his husband. Both accomplished athletes, they were bigger and stronger than him, larger in height and mass. He liked being surrounded in a bigger man’s warmth. He also liked dominating that when he had a mind to. And Walker was one hell of a specimen.

Relaxing into the embrace, Aidan coasted the hand not in Walker’s up his cut biceps, over his broad shoulder, and around to his back where rock-hard delts stood out beneath the rough chambray. Closing the inches between them, he pressed his chest to Walker’s and bit back a moan at finding the front of him as warm and firm as the back.

Walker dipped his chin, his stubbled jaw nuzzling Aidan’s temple. “Something tells me this isn’t how you danced with Isabella.”

“No, it’s not.” He breathed deep, fighting not to melt into his partner’s embrace. Everything about the moment enticed him to bury his face in Walker’s neck and let go—that deep molasses voice, the tempting cologne, a warm embrace after months of cold loneliness.

Coming May 1, 2017 – CASK STRENGTH (Agents Irish & Whiskey):

Professionally, the FBI team of Aidan “Irish” Talley and Jameson “Whiskey” Walker is as good as it gets, closing cases faster than any team at the Bureau. Personally, it’s a different story. Aidan’s feelings for Jamie scare the hell out of him: he won’t risk losing another love no matter how heart-tripping the intimacy between them. And loss is a grim reality with the terrorist Renaud still on their trail, leaving a pile of bodies in his wake.

Going undercover on a new case gets them out of town and off the killer’s radar. They’re assigned to investigate an identity theft ring involving a college basketball team in Jamie’s home state, where Jamie’s past makes him perfect for the role of coach. But returning to the court brings more than old memories.

As secrets and shocking betrayals abound, none may be more dangerous than the one Jamie’s been keeping: a secret about the death of Aidan’s husband that could blow his partner’s world apart and destroy forever the fragile bonds of trust and love building between them.

Release Day Review and Giveaway! FALLING FOR THE PLAYER by Jessica Lee

Falling For the Player
by Jessica Lee

Genre: New Adult – M/M Romance
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Release Date: January 16, 2017

Bad boy and former NFL running back Patrick Guinness is tired of meaningless sex. Ever since his scorching hot one-night stand three years ago, no one has interested him. So when Max Segreti wanders into his mechanic shop—and his life again—Patrick can’t stop thinking about the totally-out-of-his-league law student and the possibility of getting him out of his system once and for all…

Max Segreti has spent his entire life doing what his father wants. But when he runs into the hotter-than-hell player he’s never been able to forget, he’s not thinking about studying for the bar. A distraction is the last thing he needs, but after an encounter leaves him wanting more, Max embraces the chaos that Patrick brings…even as he knows it can’t last. They’re too different to ever have a future together.

Jumping up, Patrick yanked his soaked shirt over his head.

Damn, that shit is hot!

“Oh, fuck!” Max grabbed the wet shirt and tried to soak up the remaining coffee dripping off Patrick’s skin. “God, this is my fault. I should have been more careful.” Then Max jerked his own T-shirt off and blotted Patrick’s chest with it, his expression twisted with concern. “Are you okay?”

He was fine. Not that Max would stand still and listen long enough to find out. Fuck, the guy was too adorable. Patrick was lucky the coffee had been Max’s heavily creamed version and so not hot enough to do any damage.

Patrick braced his hands on the other guy’s shoulders, trying to hold him in place, but it wasn’t working.

“Max,” he called out to him.

“Do we need to get you to the ER?”

“I’m fine.”

“Shit, Patrick, I—”

Seizing one of Max’s wrists, Patrick hauled him against his chest, bringing a halt to whatever else he’d been about to say. Max looked up, his eyes wide, stunned.

“I’m okay,” Patrick whispered. He couldn’t stop drinking in the other man’s features. Strands of Max’s dark hair had fallen forward onto his forehead. The guy had the most expressive dark blue eyes, with small flecks of amber around the pupil he hadn’t noticed until now. Patrick followed the bridge of the man’s perfectly straight nose lower to where it ended above the carved V of his mouth. Outside of his looks, Max was everything Patrick never went for, smart and obviously rich, judging by the expensive car and his big-ass condo. Back home, the only way he and Max’s type would have mixed would have been when he worked on their cars. Funny how his popularity as a football star placed him, for once, on the other side of the tracks. Someone who would soon be rolling in the big bucks. The pink tip of Max’s tongue appeared, momentarily short-circuiting Patrick’s train of thought as Max licked his full lower lip.

Fuck.

Patrick wasn’t sure who moved first, but the next thing he knew, he had his fist clenched in Max’s short, thick hair and his lips sealed against Max’s. A hard shudder of pleasure raced over him, and Patrick’s cock bucked against the confines of his zipper. Max groaned, his mouth roaming every inch of Patrick’s mouth, as if he couldn’t get enough. But Patrick matched his every move, unsure who needed the contact, the pleasure, more.

I enjoyed Max and Patrick’s story–though you should be warned, it’s not really a “sports” romance, even though the title and cover make it look like it is. By the time the book really gets going (the very beginning takes place three years earlier than the rest of the book) Patrick’s already retired from pro football due to an injury. It’s still a good story, but the sports involvement is minimal.

This is a second chance romance of sorts, since Max and Patrick had a one night stand back in college. Things have definitely changed, though–Max is about to take the bar and working for his dad, and Patrick has taken over both the family business and responsibility for his younger brother Liam. Patrick and Max seem right together from the start, even though they’re from different backgrounds and going in different directions in life–neither really thinks they’ll be together…until they do.

I liked the secondary characters here–Liam, and Max’s BFF and coworker Abbie–even Max’s sister Theresa, though we don’t see her much, has potential. If Ms. Lee is going to turn this into a series and give any or all of these three a book, sign me up for sure.

Falling for the Player isn’t without its issues–we miss much of their early relationship goodness when one chapter ends and the next fast forwards us in time, and the drama with Max’s dad ends up being settled pretty darn quickly, considering–but still, I found more to like here than not.

My first book by Ms. Lee, but definitely not my last 🙂

Alex has spent eight years in the Army, months in a hospital bed, and far too long hiding his sexual identity. He’s guilt-ridden, damaged, pissed off, and up for a Silver Star—for the incident that nearly cost him his life, and kept him from his grandmother’s funeral. “Can I ask you something? You don’t have to answer.”

Tristan shrugs. “Have at it.”

“Why were you taking a break? I get that your ex was a prick, but is there more to it?”

He looks down the street, across the street, and then his hand cruises through his hair as it has so often that I’ve already come to expect it when he’s nervous.

“Ian was a prick, but the rest is going to make me sound like a pussy,” he admits.

“I’ve only known you a day, and I already know nothing can make you sound like a pussy.”

He meets my gaze, and his jaw tightens. He lifts his chin and I recognize the struggle between feeling proud and worrying about looking weak. I fight that battle on a daily basis.

“I give away my heart too easily, and I end up getting hurt.”

His eyes never leave mine, and that trust, that confidence, is the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen.

“I was right. Nothing can make you sound like a pussy.” I slide my hand to the hard ridge of his jaw and lean in closer. “I’ve never given my heart away. That makes you braver than me.”

Sweet and sexy!

Tristan and Alex are an adorable couple, even if they do fall in love awfully quickly (total insta-love alert…) The main conflicts in the story come from Alex–the difficulties he’s having dealing with the lasting implications of the life-changing injuries he suffered as a solider and the mindset of “lock down, shut up, act straight” that he felt he had to personify during his eight years in the Army. I thought Ms. Foster did a nice job of getting us into his head and showing us the effect these things had on him (OMG, when he visits the pediatric clinic? Tears. So many tears over here), though here too, things got a bit fast-tracked at the end. The healing power of love worked really, really quickly for him…

Tristan, other than having had horrible taste in men up until this point, is basically the perfect partner. I kind of wanted him to reveal a flaw or two along the way, but other than getting a little testy about Alex hiding their relationship when they were back on a military base at one point (which again, he got over pretty fast–“fast” being an ongoing theme here), he was essentially Mr. Perfect Boyfriend from start to finish. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing–they are a great couple and I did enjoy reading the book from start to finish–but the angst factor definitely could have been upped a degree…or five.

Tempting Tristan is the third in the Harborside Nights series, and fifty-seventh(!) in the Love in Bloom one, but it still worked fine as a standalone. As in every other Melissa Foster book I’ve read so far, characters from past books do play a part, making you aware that there’s definitely other stories going on/recently happened out there, but you’ll do perfectly fine not knowing all the details.

Yet. 😉

Though I’ve gotta say, Tempting Tristan does have me pretty anxious to get to Charley and Brandon’s stories ( Chasing Charley and Breaking Brandon –out soon but not nearly soon enough!)

She rolls her pretty green eyes. “No, Tristan. Because the hottest man on the planet just parked his motorcycle and he’s heading in here. All of my female customers are drooling, and I’m sure you’ll see a flock of them coming in any minute now. Meanwhile, I’m stuck outside and soon I’ll have a pier full of empty tables.” She grabs a handful of napkins and waves them at me with a smirk. “Drool rags.”“Dibs,” Charley says as she whips up a cocktail.

I laugh and hold my hands up. “I’m on a hiatus from all things male, so be my guest.” My ex, Ian, is a self-absorbed ass, and I was an idiot for letting him treat me like shit. Which is why I’m taking a break from men—even if it kills me. It’s been weeks since we broke up and I moved into my buddy Wyatt’s house. Wyatt and his twin sister, Delilah, own the Taproom. They inherited it when their parents were killed in a car accident a little more than a year ago.

“I’m sure he’s straight anyway,” Livi says. “The guy swaggers like a stud.”

“Hey, gay guys can swagger like studs,” I tease.

“I know that.” Livi peers out the pass-through window to the outside seating area and tosses her blond hair over her shoulder. “You’ll see what I mean. He’s a total badass.”

I tend to my customers as the girls discuss the badass hot guy, and when the front door opens, I can’t help but let my eyes drift over. Livi and Charley fall silent, ogling what truly might be the hottest guy on the planet. Linebacker shoulders fill the doorframe. The godlike creature is carrying a shiny black motorcycle helmet in one very large hand. His white T-shirt is stretched so tight across his chest I can see every ripple of his shredded abs, and his deliciously defined biceps are seriously struggling to be set free from his short sleeves.Tear, baby, tear.

He steps inside and runs a hand through his dirty-blond hair. Deep-set, brooding eyes slide over the customers sitting at the bar, sweep over Charley and Livi, and finally land on me. Charley whimpers, and Livi makes a sound in the back of her throat, both mimicking what I’m feeling, though my mouth is too dry to make a sound.

Review:

Yet. 😉

Though I’ve gotta say, Tempting Tristan does have me pretty anxious to get to Charley and Brandon’s stories (Chasing Charley and Breaking Brandon –out soon, but not nearly soon enough!)

New Release! FOUR by Archer Kay Leah (The Republic #2)

four-tour

Title: Four
Series: The Republic (#2)
Genre: Fantasy romance, M/M romance
Release Date: September 7, 2016
Publisher: Less Than Three Press

On the outside, Mayr seems to have it all: a successful career as Head of the Guard for a prominent politician, family and friends who adore him, and the attention of beautiful women. But appearances are a good way to bury secrets, including the fact that while Mayr is a romantic at heart, searching for the one person to share his life with, his lovers keep leaving him.

When his last girlfriend takes him back and suggests an intimate night with Tash, one of her lovers, Mayr reluctantly agrees. The last thing he expects is to fall hard for Tash, who is nothing like Mayr’s previous lovers—and about to undertake the Uldana Trials. If Tash fails, he’ll likely die. If he succeeds, he must give up Mayr, and become the latest to leave Mayr standing alone with a broken heart.

Excerpt:

He waited, not sure what to expect as an answer.

Tash played with the chain of his talon ring. “I really did have your interests at heart,” he said quietly. “And since we’re being honest: I didn’t come tonight just to be a priest. I was hoping to see you. I’d thought of visiting again, but worried it was too soon—that you wouldn’t want to see my face again. I was afraid you wouldn’t trust me or listen to anything I had to say.”

Don’t we make the pair? Mayr studied Tash’s face, tempted to brush Tash’s hair over his shoulder to see him better. Maybe there was a chance for them yet.

“One thing you said still confuses me,” Mayr admitted. “What did you mean when you said this wasn’t part of your plan?”

“It’s a priesthood thing. I’m going through for the next level soon, though it’s not yet set. I have to do some things before then and complete certain tasks. Prove my worth and how serious I am about committing to it.” Tash smiled sadly at Mayr. “That’s why I was with Sarene. I was having fun before I have to go through all of that. She offered something that wasn’t attachment, just pleasure. Since being an Uldana restricts me from intimacy, I thought it wouldn’t hurt.”

Tash shook his head. “But I hurt you, and that’s not right.” He laid one hesitant hand on Mayr’s. “I truly am sorry for everything. Sarene made it sound like you were fully into it. Meanwhile, I had the distinct impression you were serious about her even though she was playing you. She’s inept and too blind to fully comprehend what she had.”

Mayr threw blades of grass toward the hill. “You don’t need to apologize. You told me I could get out and I didn’t. I’m glad I stayed.”

And now for the moment of debilitating truth. “You asked how I was taking it, what we did, and I didn’t answer. Because I couldn’t.” Mayr sucked in a deep breath. “I didn’t know how to answer you, but I’ve been working it out. I’ve had a lot of time to figure out my exact reply.”

Rising to his knees, Mayr ignored his doubts. Before he lost his courage, he pressed his lips to Tash’s, tugging gently on Tash’s bottom lip before offering his mouth fully. It felt right. Good. He should have done it before.

Tonight, he would not shy away. His fear of rejection would have to wait.

As Tash gripped his arm and pulled him closer, Mayr’s fears dissipated. When Tash’s tongue entered Mayr’s mouth, tasting and teasing, it sparked deep emotions Mayr had missed. Sincere desire, transcending the relationships he had accepted as all he could have.

Slowly, Mayr broke the kiss, satisfied with Tash’s ardent gaze. “Did I tell you that I’m really, really happy you’re here?”

Without waiting for Tash’s answer, Mayr kissed him hard, wishing Tash could feel what he did. He felt lit up, more than he had in a long time. The relationship with Sarene had become a chore. And before her, it wasn’t any different. I felt the same for the other women as I did her. Just going through the motions, telling myself they could be someone I could stay with for the rest of my life so I wouldn’t be alone. Convinced they would stay and he would be happy, he had given them everything.

All of it had been foolish desperation.

But Tash offered the things missing from most of Mayr’s relationships. Joyful intoxication derived from emotion alone. Breathtaking inspiration that made everything else in his life seem lacklustre. The restored hope that someone could consider him enough. Whenever Tash asked about him, his concern sounded genuine. In the smallest action, there was more care and respect than any of Mayr’s girlfriends had shown him. The idea of being with Tash was both thrilling and terrifying, but deep down in his tainted core, he needed it.

“I’m hoping that answers your question,” Mayr murmured. “Otherwise, it’s going to take me a while to convince you, and I still have things to do tonight.”

Tash leaned his forehead against Mayr’s. “No, you’ve made it clear. I won’t ask again.”

“Then I’ve got a question for you.”

“Anything.”

“If I said I wanted to see where this could go, what would you say?”

Lips traveled up Mayr’s jaw and kissed a path to his brow. Arms encircled his waist, holding him upright against Tash’s side. “Yes,” Tash whispered against his temple.

The breathy reply wreaked havoc on Mayr’s body. A shiver shot through him from the back of his neck to his feet. To feel Tash’s interest was one thing; hearing it was another. They were worth every night he had agonized over an apology.

“I have to get back to the feast.” Mayr tilted his head. “Do you have a curfew? Do the other priests lock you up if you come home late?”

Tash chuckled. “No. That’s only for the Metahs. I’m free to do as I please. Why?”

“If you stay, we could spend time together after the feast is over. Maybe finally get around to knowing each other better?”

“Considering I came here mostly for you… there’s no place I’d rather be.”

“Also known as yes.”

“Yes.”

And with one word, hope trounced Mayr’s fear into submission.

Release Day Review! MR. AND MR. SMITH by HelenKay Dimon

Title: Mr. and Mr. Smith
Author: HelenKay Dimon
Publisher: Loveswept
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: May 24, 2016

Blurb:

Secrets and seduction make for an explosive combination in HelenKay Dimon’s edgy, thrilling new series, which kicks off with a novel about two men who can handle any threat—except the one posed by desire.

Fisher Braun knows how to keep a secret. As a covert paramilitary operative, his job—and his life—depends on it. He’s at the top of his game, ready for action and always in control. No enemy has ever brought him to his knees, but one lover has: Zachary Allen, the man currently sharing his bed. The perfect package of brains and brawn, Zach is someone worth coming home to, and Fisher hates keeping him in the dark about what he does. But the lies keep Zach safe. Until the day Fisher loses everything. . . .

Zachary Allen is no innocent civilian. Although he plays the tech geek, in reality he’s deep undercover for the CIA. In a horrible twist of fate, the criminal enterprise he’s infiltrated has set its sights on the man whose touch drives him wild. Zach would do anything for Fisher—except blow his own cover. Now, in order to save him, Zach must betray him first. And he needs Fisher to trust him with all his heart if they want to make it out alive.

Review:
Phew! What a ride this book takes you on!

I’m a total sucker for super-secret spy-type stories (I blame watching waaaay too much Scarecrow and Mrs. King in my formative years), so I jumped at the chance to read this one. In a lot of ways, I wasn’t disappointed–the espionage and action keep you on the edge of your seat–right from the very first chapters, I was hooked. I liked the main players–Zach, Fisher, Nathan, and Seth–especially how Nathan and Seth spent so much of their time ragging on Fisher.

Because Fisher? Totally deserved it. And then some.

I get that he felt betrayed–heck, who wouldn’t? But OMG, he needed to let it go. About seventeen chapters before he actually did. Because, hello? You’re both super-secret spy guys. Lying is what you all do for a living. And getting all in Zach’s face for doing his job? Hello, pot, meet Kettle. Your blackness is pretty darn equal, so stop making your boyfriend miserable with your crappy ‘tude, ‘kay? Way too much whining. Way too much blaming. Eventually we get a better reason for it other than “you hurt my feelings, you big lying liar” and I was slightly less aggravated with him, but for a good chunk of the middle of the book I just wanted to skip all of his parts and get to the exciting stuff.

But I persevered. And I’m glad I did, because it got much better at the end, with all of the dramatic spy stuff and a hero who’d finally gotten over himself and stopped punishing his boyfriend for doing what he had to do (and risking his job to save his boyfriend’s life in the process.)

So–4 stars, for fun espionage and camaraderie among agents, a decent romance, and likable characters, the one star detracted for the incessant whining of Fisher (especially since it didn’t stop him from pursuing physical–ahem–pleasures with Zach all the while. Totally not fair, dude). If there’s going to be a series around these characters (there’s some question at the end about where some of the bad guys/possible bad guys have ended up) I’d definitely sign up to read more.

Review:

This was such a sweet romance!

It didn’t exactly start out that way–well, it did, and then it veered temporarily into “What the heck?” territory, but by the ending it was back to sweetness. Evren just needed to get his head out of his butt over Brady’s being a bisexual and learn to truly let others (mainly, but not strictly limited to, Brady) in to help him with all of the crap that life was sending his way, and then everything was back to feel-good romance land again.

Well, except for the part that made me cry.

But then Brady and Ev were back to making me sigh happily, so… 🙂

I loved Brady’s character–not much of a surprise, since we see the whole book from his point of view (with the exception of the small snippets of Ev’s knitting blog which we get at the beginning of every chapter except the first one–loved this device, BTW!). He’s got so much on his plate, with his four younger siblings that he’s been responsible for since the death of their parents–seven-year-old twin girls, a ten-year old brother, and nineteen-year-old sister who helps up to a point, but who also wants to be a “normal” nineteen-year-old girl. Between work and his family, his dating life has been nonexistent. And then he sees Ev across the busy coffee shop…

Ev’s a bit harder to like at times. At first he’s all cute and flirty–until he finds out Brady’s orientation. He’s had bad experiences with two bisexuals, and says he won’t chance it again and shuts Brady down. But then he decides friendship is doable, only they both clearly want more…anyway, he’s lucky that Brady is patient. And that he really, really likes him. It also doesn’t hurt that Ev’s so good with kids… 😉

This was my first book from this author, but it won’t be my last! Even though it’s 4th in the series, Knit Tight worked just fine as a standalone.
