New Release Review! THE DEBT by M. O’Keefe (The Debt #.5)

The Debt

by Molly O’Keefe

Synopsis:

LOVE AND SECOND CHANCES ARE NOT FREE

For the five kids who live at St. Jude’s Home for Court Placed Juveniles, life is a nightmare.

Carissa, the youngest, has been there the longest. And barely speaks. Rosa is sixteen and pregnant.

Simon keeps his head down and studies, hoping to get back the life he lost.

Beth and Tommy, in the middle of the darkness, have found each other, and all they want is to be together. But when they get caught making out at school, it puts everyone in danger. Tommy is used to the beatings from their foster father, but when Beth is singled out for punishment, Tommy can’t sit back and let it happen.

AND ALL DEBTS MUST BE PAID

What happens that night rips apart the lives of the five teenagers forever.

After the blood has been spilled, a bargain is made. A deal with the devil that should have solved things. It should have fixed everything.

But nothing is free – not love, not innocence, and certainly not freedom. And sooner or later, all debts must be paid…

Review:

The Debt does exactly what it needs to–introduces readers to the five teens who survived the horrific St. Jude’s Home for Court Placed Juveniles, vividly shows what happened on their last night there, and sets up the concept of “the debt” that will be a major plot factor in the next two series books.

In short–it gives you just enough to make you want more, sand want it now! Fortunately for me, my copy of book #1 (Lost Without You) included this prequel novella, so I didn’t have to wait!

Though book #2 is another story…how soon is its release???

New Release Review! BAD NEIGHBOR by M. O’Keefe

Bad Neighbor
by Molly O’Keefe

Synopsis:

He’s sexy… He’s dangerous… He’s right next door.

I gave up everything to save my sister from a monster, and now I’m lying low in this rundown apartment so I can stay out of danger. Hiding from everyone.
Except for the guy in apartment 1A.
He’s rude. Silent. Muscled, mysterious, and hot as hell. I don’t know if he likes me or hates me, but the more time I spend with him, the less it matters.
I want him.
And for the first time in my life I’m going to go after what I want.

She doesn’t belong in my world.

From the second 1B moves in, I know she’s keeping secrets. She doesn’t belong here, much less with a street fighter like me.
But that doesn’t stop me from craving her. Her softness and sweetness. She’s a drug, and suddenly I’m addicted.
I know someone is going to try and hurt her and I can’t let that happen. But unless I push her away and get her out of my world, that someone could be me…

Review:

I really love Molly O’Keefe’s writing, and when she puts on her “M. O’Keefe” hat? She ramps up the intensity.

I. Like.

A lot.

Bad Neighbor does not disappoint. Charlotte, a graphic artist (she’s creating a Where’s Waldo-style Jane Austen book–is it wrong that I really, really, really want this book to exist?) has just moved into an apartment in a pretty dodgy neighborhood because she just gave all of her cash and disposable assets to her twin sister, who’s on the run from her potentially-dangerous ex. Charlotte’s pretty anti-people anyway (again, a heroine after my own heart) so lying low shouldn’t be a major hardship. She just needs to keep her head down, finish her book, and make enough money to move somewhere, well…safer.

Except there’s that neighbor…

Jesse’s got his own toxic past, plus the potential of an equally dangerous future. He needs to stay away from his new neighbor–for her own good, he’s convinced. But she makes it difficult to stay away, and their walls are awfully thin…

I really enjoyed the push and pull between Jesse and Charlotte. They had great chemistry together and the reasons for them not to be together are good, though solved a bit quickly and abruptly in the end (I’d just started to wonder if this was going to be more of a
Everything I Left Unsaid
-type ending when it suddenly came to an end). It did leave me all kinds of anxious for the next book, though (
The Bad Boy’s Secret Baby
) because yeah, I’ve got to see where she’s going to take those two.

Plus, seeing more Charlotte and Jesse could never be a bad thing. And bonus–there’s a teaser at the end for Tiffany and Blake’s (Everything I Left Unsaid series) book, which has been a loooong time coming. 2017 is looking promising!

Saturday Morning Video: Harley Quinn reads a romance in the SUICIDE SQUAD trailer!

She’s reading Molly O’Keefe’s Between the Sheets, #3 in her Boys of Bishop series! I reviewed it here. (Spoiler alert–loved it!)

FYI, it is NOT a Harlequin book, as the “Suicide Squad Trailer Every Easter Egg and Reference” video asserts (though he does a decent job of explaining the premise and does say it’s a good read–don’t get me started on the screen definition of “Harlequin” though!) but was published by Random House.

THE TRUTH ABOUT HIM BOOK BLURB:

For fans of Christina Lauren and Jodi Ellen Malpas comes the next novel in M. O’Keefe’s breathtakingly sexy series about a woman called into a journey of the heart, body, and soul.

We played our roles, told each other lies.

But now Dylan is no longer just a mysterious deep voice on the other end of the line. We’re face-to-face and our relationship is very, very real.

We still have secrets—but so much is crystal clear:

The thrilling danger.

The raw, naked desire.

The need to keep feeling the way he makes me feel. Forever.

Dylan is putting up walls, trying to keep me safe, but he can’t shut me out. He has seen my darkness and rescued me. Now it’s my turn, if only he will let me.

The Truth About Him is intended for mature audiences.

New Release Review and Giveaway! EVERYTHING I LEFT UNSAID by M. O’Keefe (Everything I Left Unsaid #1)

EILU_BLOGTOUR

EVERYTHING I LEFT UNSAID Synopsis:

Fans of Jodi Ellen Malpas, K. Bromberg, and Joanna Wylde will be unable to resist this sexy, deeply intimate tale of a woman running from her past, and the darkly mysterious man who sets her free.

I didn’t think answering someone else’s cellphone would change my life. But the stranger with the low, deep voice on the other end of the line tempted me, awakened my body, set me on fire. He was looking for someone else. Instead he found me.

And I found a hot, secret world where I felt alive for the first time.

His name was Dylan, and, strangely, he made me feel safe. Desired. Compelled. Every dark thing he asked me to do, I did. Without question. I longed to meet him, but we were both keeping secrets. And mine were dangerous. If I took the first step, if I got closer to Dylan—emotionally, physically—then I wouldn’t be hiding anymore. I would be exposed, with nothing left to surrender but the truth. And my truth could hurt us both.

Review:

Oh. My. Gosh. Thank goodness book two ( The Truth About Him ) comes out next month, because I honestly don’t think I could survive much longer than that not knowing.

Because yes–cliffhanger ending. Holy schmoly, is it a cliffhanger ending…which I should have seen coming, but I was hurtling right toward that cliff with them and somehow the one big clue (that did make me stop and say hmmmmmm, that can’t be good…. when it came) was out of mu head in practically the next instant when Ms. O’Keefe purposefully distracted me–and Annie–from thinking about it.

Darn her.

Darn her.

I can see why she went with using her initial here instead of her full first name–Everything I Left Unsaid is quite a departure from all the Molly O’Keefe books I’ve read. . Much, much darker–but I love all of her other books, so it was a given I was going to read this one too. Honestly, I’m pretty sure she could write golf commentary (the Geico commercial? Anyone see it during the football games this weekend? Got me every time. But I digress…) and I’d read it. And I’d be turning the pages like a crazy person until I got to the last one, just like I was with this book.

Annie and Dylan–both so damaged, each really, really needing the other but there’s so much in between them. So. Much.

Gah.

I was reading, pretty much forsaking everything else around me for the day, keeping one eye on the ereader’s progress bar, wondering how she was going to end this.

Now I know.

And I have to get my hands on the conclusion.

SOON.

Because I just can’t bear to leave Annie and Dylan like this for much longer…

BOOK SUMMARY:

Perfect for readers of Susan Mallery and Rachel Gibson, Molly O’Keefe’s gritty and sensual tale of passion and politics features the brother of the heroine from the author’s beloved novel, Never Been Kissed. He’s a driven man who refuses to be distracted—until he meets a beautiful bartender who just may change his life.

With his chiseled jaw and his thick blond hair, Harrison Montgomery was born to lead. Four generations of Montgomery men have served the state of Georgia and now he’s next in line. Harrison, though, is driven to right wrongs: namely to clean up the political mess left by his father’s greed and corruption. But Harrison must first win his congressional bid, and nothing can get in his way—not even an angel who served him whiskey and gave him a shoulder to lean on and a body to love for a night. Problem is, she’s pregnant. Scandal is brewing and there is only one solution: marriage.

Damage control? Ryan Kaminski can’t believe that a cold, calculating political animal now inhabits the body of the emotionally vulnerable stranger who’d given her the most unforgettable night of her life. Really, she doesn’t want anything from Harrison, except to be left alone to have her baby in peace. But Ryan is broke, jobless, and essentially blackmailed by Harrison’s desperate family to accept this crazy marriage deal. For two years, she will have to act the role of caring, supportive wife. But what is Ryan supposed to do when she realizes that, deep in her heart, she’s falling in love.

Review:

Whenever I finish a Molly O’Keefe book, I know I’m going to feel emotionally drained–very, very happy and satisfied, don’t get me wrong–but drained. Because, oh my goodness, no one can put her characters–and readers–through an emotional wringer quite like Ms. O’Keefe.

Where to begin?

First we have our hero, Harrison Montgomery, a fifth-generation politician in an old Southern family. Practically from the cradle, his life has been all about politics and putting the family’s best face and image forward. His father, the governor of Georgia, has had a tenure marked by scandal and corruption, and Harrison needs to be without weakness as he strives to once again make the Montgomery name one to be proud of. His family life is pretty damn scary (except for his relationship with his sister–Ashley, the heroine of Never Been Kissed, but she’s managed to distance herself from a lot of the family and public craziness as an adult) and he doesn’t really have friends, outside from a decent but not-quite-close relationship with his campaign manager, Wallace. His political career is really all he’s living for.

And holy schmoly, is the guy wound tight.

Next, our heroine, Ryan Kaminski. She’s a former teen model working as a bartender at a swanky NYC hotel and living in a studio apartment that her brother describes as a “one-room closet”. She hasn’t been home in six years to see her father or two sisters–her brother Wes is the only family member she has had contact with beyond the electronic or post-office type in all that time. She’s got hopes and dreams, though–going to college, getting a degree in psychology, somehow making up for past mistakes with her family…

Getting pregnant thanks to a faulty condom during a one-night stand with a guy she picked up in her bar? Yeah, so not a part of the plan. Finding out said guy is Harrison-freaking-Montgomery? Well, maybe it could be worse. Or could it?

Both Ryan and Harrison are just so…broken. It’s devastating to see them not say the things to each other that you just know they want to say, the things that the other one really needs to hear. The bitterness, the anger, the hurt–I just wanted to reach into my e-reader and give them huge hugs. Or knock their heads together. Sometimes both.

They each messed everything up but good–over and over again–and were messed with even worse. Somehow Ms. O’Keefe brought them together in a way that makes you totally believe in their HEA, though, and thank goodness. If she hadn’t? I don’t know what I would have done. Seriously.

The secondary characters here are amazing too–Wallace, Harrison’s mother’s assistant Noelle, Ryan’s family–even Harrison’s parents become human-like, sympathetic characters (mostly) by the book’s end. When Wallace explained why he always wears such god-awful ties, I had tears in my eyes.

Honest-to-goodness tears, I tell you. Over ties. Actually, the last 20% of the book had me tearing up pretty regularly. Keep tissues handy–you have been warned.

In Indecent Proposal, Molly O’Keefe has written an amazing story about love and family–one I won’t be forgetting soon.

(Fourth in the series, it works okay as a stand-alone, especially since they’re not actually in Bishop. There really isn’t any connection at all to books one or three. There are spoilers–of a sort–for Ashley’s book, but really I think they just serve to make you want to read it SOON, if you haven’t already.)

BETWEEN THE SHEETS
by Molly O’Keefe
July 2014
Boys of Bishop, book #3

 BOOK SUMMARY:

Perfect for readers of Susan Mallery and Rachel Gibson, Between the Sheets is Molly O’Keefe’s final book in the Boys of Bishop trilogy, featuring a sizzling romance between a sexy motorcycle bad boy and the girl next door who can’t resist him.

After years of running, Wyatt Svenson has now parked himself in Bishop, Arkansas, trying to do the right thing and parent a son he didn’t even know he had until recently. Over six feet tall and packed with muscles and power, Ty likes to get his hands dirty, fixing his motorcycle at night and keeping his mind away from the mistakes he’s made. Then his pretty neighbor shows up on his driveway, doesn’t bother to introduce herself, and complains about the noise. First impression? She should loosen up. Funny that she turns out to be his son’s elementary school art teacher—and the only one willing to help his troubled boy. Ty needs her. In more ways than one.

Though Shelby Monroe is safe in her structured life, she is drawn to Ty’s bad-boy edge and rugged sexuality. What if she just lets it all go: her worries about her mother, her fear of heartbreak, and her tight self control? What if she grabs Ty and takes a ride on the wild side? “What if” becomes reality—intense, exhilarating . . . and addictive. But Ty wants more than a secret affair. He wants it all with Shelby. But will she take a chance and open her heart? Ty is determined to convince Shelby to take the biggest risk of her life: on him.

Review:

Molly O’Keefe’s books are always so much more than they appear on the surface…and I love that about them.

In Between the Sheets, our hero and heroine, Ty and Shelby, both had horrible childhoods that are still affecting them as adults. Shelby grew up with a manipulative and narcissistic father who was a truly awful parent and spouse. He has since passed away, but not before Shelby became an expert at emotionally walling herself away from the world. As the story begins, we learn that her mother has developed Alzheimer’s and is becoming steadily worse–really, she’s too much for Shelby to handle on her own–but guilt and love, combined with the emotional distance she feels from the world, keep her from seeking any real help.

Ty is in a better place when the novel begins–somewhat, anyway. He managed to survive his parents’ toxic relationship and was taken in by his grandparents at a relatively young age, so he did at least have one positive example of a loving relationship behind him. He lost ground after his grandfather died, however, and did some major backsliding, taking up with a group and a girl who were bad news. He had finally pulled himself up and had just begun to really bring his life back together when he got the shock of a lifetime–his eleven-year-old son, Casey.

Determined to do what is best for his child–even though he’s not at all sure just what that is–Ty moves them to Bishop, Arkansas, enrolls Casey in the local school, and takes a job working in construction (for Brody, the hero of book two–Never Been Kissed). Ty’s gone for more than a decade not knowing he was a parent, though, and Casey’s lived through his own set of childhood horrors. Just as Ty begins to think that he’s made the right choices at last, Casey starts acting up at school.

Imagine Ty’s surprise when the witchy neighbor who confronted him the night before turns out to be his son’s art teacher, and one of the few people at the school who seems to have a handle on how to help Casey.

He’s even more surprised by how attractive he finds her. Finding out that she wants him too is icing on the cake.

Or is it?

Shelby wants to use Ty as a crutch, and sex with him a quick fix when her life feels beyond her control. Ty soon wants more, though. And he doesn’t want to be compartmentalized into one of her tiny little boxes. He wants to be all in.

I was so invested in the characters of Ty, Shelby, and Casey. Molly O’Keefe does an amazing job of really getting into the minds of her characters, showing us what makes them do the things they do. Casey’s character was especially heartbreaking, and had me tearing up more than once. Ty was amazing–even though his instincts told him more than once that it was time to cut and run, as he’d done so many times in the past–he stuck it out; for himself, his son, and for Shelby.

One of my (many) favorite quotes, because it really shows Ty’s character:

Ty wasn’t like other parents. Wasn’t like other people, and he seemed to have this tremendous capacity to understand that second chances were a divine right, so he stepped aside, letting her in.

Seriously sigh-worthy!

Shelby was a bit harder to really empathize with–she was just so prickly and cut herself off so much from the world that even the reader feels the distance. It wasn’t until the very end when she makes a real push to make herself change that you finally feel that she might be able to do it after all. Still, the second-to-last chapter feels a bit more like a happy-for-now than a HEA. The final chapter, set a year later, does paint a much more optimistic future for the three, and gave me real hope for them all.

I haven’t had a chance to read the other two books in the series yet, but I’m going to–SOON. Although the characters from Wild Child and Never Been Kissed do pop in and out of Ty and Shelby’s story, you don’t need to have already read the other two to enjoy this one. (Pssst! You can enter to win copies of both of them below–check it out!)
