But the Sedona Pack Alpha has a mission, and unless Luke and Raven can stop him, they’ll lose everything.

Author’s Note: While a part of a series, each book in the Moon series, including WOLF MOON, can be read as a STANDALONE!

“You really need to go back and warn your Pack. I don’t know when Caldwell will be headed your way yet, but I could text you once I hear something. Maybe you can convince them not to be in town when Caldwell comes calling.”

“I’m not turning my back on you and your sister. If I can get Caldwell to accept me into this Pack, I can find his weak point.” He paused. “Did you tell him you found me and I wanted a meeting?”

A pit festered in my stomach as I shook my head. “No.”

He leaned against the bumper, obviously collecting himself. I could almost smell his frustration. “That’s why he hit you, wasn’t it? You wouldn’t tell them where you were.”

“It wasn’t Caldwell who smacked me.” I crossed my arms. “But none of that matters. I can’t let you get messed up in this snake pit, Luke. This Pack isn’t your problem. I don’t want you risking your life.”

I steeled myself and choked out, “Go warn your Pack and find your mate. Hopefully your Pack can defeat Caldwell, or at least avoid him, and we’ll all get out of here without messing up your life, too.”

He straightened, his jaw tight. “Sounds like you’ve got it all figured out.”

“It’s the safest for everyone.” He didn’t look convinced. I lowered my hands to my sides. “The last thing I need is another wolf going all Alpha on me. Please go. Be smart, not brave.”

I reached for the handle on the van just as he did.

And the world tilted on its axis.

His rough hand covered mine, skin to skin, and somewhere in the shadows of my soul, my wolf howled. The sound deafened me from inside out. I lost my balance, but he caught me before I fell. Staring up at him, my vision blurred as my pupils dilated and contracted. His scent filled my lungs. And from the core of my being, every part of me recognized him.

I opened my mouth to say something, but no words came. It didn’t make sense. I barely knew him. But none of that mattered. On a primal level, there were no doubts. His eyes searched my face, and finally he bent to kiss me. I wrapped my arms around his neck, clinging to him like a lifeline as my lips parted, our tongues tangling until I moaned into him. He tightened his hold on me, and his heart pounded like a sledgehammer in my sensitive ears. He felt it, too.

Whatever it was.

He growled against my lips and stumbled backward. I struggled to catch my breath, unable to tear my gaze off his. “What the hell was that?”

“Fuck.” He ran his hand down his face, chest heaving.

His throat bobbed as he swallowed hard. “I’m not going anywhere. I can’t let you go back there alone.” I frowned. “You don’t have a choice.”

“You’re right, I don’t.”

I shook my head, completely confused.

He took a slow breath, his voice deep and dangerous. “I can’t get you and your sister out yet, so I’m going in. I’m not leaving Sedona without you.”

“No.” My pulse raced at breakneck speed. “They’ll kill you.”

“Only if they think I’m still with the Pack in Reno.”

At the moment the only thing I cared about was keeping him safe. I’d survived in this Pack so far; I could hang on a little longer. “It’s too risky. You’re not thinking straight.”

He caressed the edge of my jaw, the simple touch sending tingles through my entire body. “They will never hurt you again.”

“Luke, this is nuts.” Just the thought of them killing him was making me physically ill. “Please.”

He kissed my forehead and whispered, “You’re my mate, Raven.” When he moved back, intensity darkened his eyes. “And if any of them ever try to touch you again, they’ll have to kill me first.”

That was exactly what I was afraid of.

Rambling About Series: Guest Post and Giveaway with Lisa Kessler, Author of Hunter’s Moon

Rambling about Series

Hi everyone –

Big thanks to Becky for the blog spot today! 🙂

I’m a big time rambler, usually about books too! Since Hunter’s Moon is the newest addition to my Moon Series, I thought it would be fun to chat about series in general.

I’m a huge series reader. When I love a book, it makes it that much sweeter when I see it’s part of a series. It’s like knowing you’ll get to travel back to this same world again, sometimes even visit with the same characters you’ve grown to love. It’s addicting!

And as a writer, I now have two series out. The Night Series is my Mayan vampire series and now the Moon Series which is my werewolf and jaguar shifter series. There were some challenges I never expected when writing a series though.  Both of my series feature VERY different heroes, as well as different writing styles. The Night Series is written in third person point of view with mysterious immortal heroes, and my new Moon Series is writing in alternating first person with a very contemporary set of heroes in the Pack.

Sometimes when I’m editing a book in one series while trying to write a book in the other series, it takes me a while to shift gears in my head to get the feel! LOL.  However, it’s so much fun to have the freedom to write in both worlds!  I love it! 🙂

So as a reader, do you enjoy reading series?  What do you like (or hate) about series?

Thanks for chatting with me!

Thanks, Lisa–great post! I love to read books in a series–when you “meet” characters from previous books in later ones, it’s like seeing old friends again; and when you really love a series story, it’s great to know there’s more where that came from!

In case you missed it, I reviewed Lisa’s newest book, Hunter’s Moon (book two in the Moon series) earlier this week–you can LisaKessler_HuntersMoon_1600RGB (1)read my thoughts here. Spoiler alert–I loved it!

(But seriously, check out that cover. How could I not love it, with inspiration like that in front of me? 😉 )

Book Review and New Release: Hunter’s Moon by Lisa Kessler (Book two of the Moon series)

Come back on Friday, when author Lisa Kessler comes for a visit to talk about her love of series!

LisaKessler_HuntersMoon_1600RGB (1)

Title: Hunter’s Moon
Author: Lisa Kessler
Series: Moon
Genre: Paranormal romance
Published: 2013
Pages: 340
Format read: ebook
Rating: A-

Hunter’s Moon is the second book in Lisa Kessler’s Moon series about werewolves and jaguar shifters. It was my first book from this author, but definitely won’t be my last!

Aren’s wolf pack is still reeling from the recent events that killed his father and left his twin Adam a married man and father of two–and their new alpha. Aren’s loyalty has always been with the pack and his family, but now he’s harboring a secret: the knowledge that the hired killer who played a major role in those events is actually his one true mate.

Sasha was once a homicide cop, until she was bitten and forcibly turned into a jaguar shifter and assassin for a shady group called the Nero Organization. Now she’s on the run from them, and hasn’t seen her sister Nadya–the only family she has left–in months. To complicate matters, the wolf she was supposed to have killed months ago but couldn’t bring herself to is currently following her, taking out the men that Nero has sent to bring her back in. A threatening text puts not only her life but that of her sister in danger–can Sasha trust the man she should have killed to help her keep Nadya safe, or is it too much of a risk?

Not having read Moonlight, the first book in the series, I did feel a bit behind times in the beginning of the novel, since so much of what is going on hinges on the events of book one. I quickly caught on to enough to get by, though, and was immediately drawn into the storyline. It definitely grabs you right away and doesn’t let go. Hunter’s Moon is not quite a standalone book, but it can function as such if you’re willing to put the work in.

(Naturally, though, I’m absolutely going to read the first book. I’d already added it to my Goodreads “to read” list before I even reached the fifty-percent mark of this one. You’ve been warned: you can read this one without having read the first, but you’re totally going to want to read book one anyway by the time you’re done.)

I really liked the way this story was told in dual first person point of view; it allowed the reader to really see the internal conflicts faced by both the hero and heroine. It also made for some highly entertaining dialogue, both internal and external, from the hero and heroine.

“Is this about the kiss?”

“No.” She shifted her weight to one foot, pushing her hip out slightly. “But I don’t think we should do that again.”

I raised a brow. “No?”

“We’ve got to get this guy, wolf.”

Apparently she still wasn’t going to call me by my name. But she wasn’t shooting me with a Taser either.

Baby steps.

Poor, poor Aren–for so much of the book his human instincts and those of his wolf just can’t agree. I liked what Kessler does with the “one true mate” concept in this world; it makes for an interesting duology. The fact that jaguars don’t necessarily mate for life just adds another layer of interest to the story. Neither Aren’s human side nor Sasha are completely on board with the idea of being mated for a good long while.

I opted to retreat and regroup, reaching for a way to change the subject. “But I guess this is actually a good cover. If we shifted here [at an anime expo] there’s a good chance no one would notice.”

He nodded. “You’re probably right.”

We sat in awkward silence for a moment, and I waited for him to say something. Preferably something not insane like “you’re my mate.”

But he didn’t say anything.

I really enjoyed both the voice of Aren and Sasha, and Kessler’s writing was witty and sharp. The action scenes have just the right amount of tension, and the relationship angst here is finely drawn. It definitely has all the marks of a good series: an interesting world with strong characters. There seems to be a lot to explore in the other pack members that we see here, and the ending of this book nicely sets up the next, which will feature Nadya and another member of Aren’s pack. Even before I read the excerpt at the end I knew I was going to be reading that one.

This raw, real love made me strong and weak, like a thrill ride and a cup of chocolate all at once.

Already, I was hooked.

Me too, Sasha. Me too.

I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
