A Conversation with Kari Lynn Dell, Author of TANGLED IN TEXAS (with a giveaway!)

Welcome, Kari Lynn! What 5 things should readers know about you?

  • I am, in person, one of the least romantic, most logic-bound people you’ll ever meet. We don’t even celebrate Valentine’s Day. My husband hates watching movies with me because I insist on pointing out plot holes and illogical character arcs, but I am incapable of just letting it go.
  • I am currently, simultaneously addicted to astrophysicist Neil Degrasse Tyson’s podcast Star Talk and binge-watching the first season of Glee. I love me some show tunes and theories of relativity.
  • Ninety-nine percent of the scenes in Tangled involving Delon’s rehab were written from personal experience. I studied sports medicine in college and worked as a clinic-based athletic trainer in South Dakota and Oregon, spending my afternoons, evenings and weekends on the sidelines of local high school practices and games. Ask me about any sport, I’ve probably watched a thousand or so hours of it. Mornings I worked in the physical therapy clinic rehabbing athletes, just like Tori.
  • Also like Tori, I am obsessed with big rigs and would love to climb in and do a cross country road trip. Especially with someone who looks like Delon and has a chocolate stash. I would settle for my husband, though, who actually owns a commercial driver’s license. But sadly, not a truck.
  • I grew up as a rodeo rat, hanging out behind the chutes while my parents were competing. Beni Sanchez is a conglomeration of all the wise-beyond-their-years cowkids I’ve known. And been.

Fascinating! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

It all started with the George Strait song, I Can Still Make Cheyenne, about a professional cowboy who has been dropping in and out of a woman’s life as his rodeo schedule allowed. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKXdnBGIcm0 ) Finally one day he calls to say he’s coming home and she tells him not to bother, she’s found someone new. I love that song. And it got me thinking—what kind of guy would take off for weeks and not even call, and what kind of woman would put up with him? What would happen if their paths cross again, years down the road when they’re both older and wiser and life has knocked them around some? My imagination took it from there, and Delon and Tori were born.

Oooh, I love that song too! Awesome inspiration!

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I started writing in the late ‘90s. We were living in Oregon and I was working as an athletic trainer at Pendleton High School, so I had summers off. I’ve always done a lot of reading—anything and everything—but romance has been one of my mainstays. As a rancher and cowgirl it was natural for me to gravitate toward western romances, but what I found wasn’t the world I live in. The characters didn’t look the same or talk the same as the cowboys and cowgirls I knew. In many cases the rodeo or ranch setting was a backdrop, not a central part of the plot. So with an entire summer vacation stretching ahead of me, I decided to write my own. Much to my surprise, I was good at it—and I got hooked.

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I am currently working on the fourth book in the Texas Rodeo series (due spring 2018), what I call Shakedown in Texas on the good days, and This Damn Book the rest of the time. It stars Wyatt, the best friend of the hero of the first book, Reckless in Texas, and Melanie, the lifetime BFF of the heroine of the same book. Which makes things complicated right off the bat because, as one character points out, “You two hooking up would be like dating your best friend’s sister.” And it just gets weirder from there.

My next release will be Tougher in Texas which is currently available for pre-order at all of the usual online outlets or your local indie bookstore. I don’t like to play favorites, but I have to say, Shawnee (who you meet in Tangled) is my favorite heroine to date. Imagine Melissa McCarthy as a cowgirl, at her outrageous, sarcastic best. Then throw her together with Cole Jacobs, who was diagnosed as autistic at the end of Reckless in Texas and treasures nothing more than his safe, predictable routines. Wow, were they fun to write.

I bet—and they sound like even more fun to read!

What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?

The last book I read was The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, and it was awesome. A great study in how to write a story that is very narrowly focused on the hero and heroine, especially for a someone like me who loves her secondary characters and sub-plots. As for what I’m currently reading—I am banned from my To-Be-Read pile until I survive the release of Tangled and get through the first draft of Shakedown.

That sounds like a plan! Maybe I should ban myself from my TBR until the end of the semester…? Nope, not that strong. 😉

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Pro bronc rider Delon Sanchez lost everything when his knee was shattered. One person can help him get it back—the woman who broke his heart.

Perfect! Thanks so much, Kari Lynn!

It took 32 seconds to end his career.

But it only took 1 to change his life.

Thirty-two seconds. That’s how long it took for Delon Sanchez’s life to end. One minute he was the best bronc rider in the Panhandle and the next he was nothing. Knee shattered, future in question, all he can do is pull together the pieces…and wonder what cruel trick of fate has thrown him into the path of his ex, the oh-so-perfect Tori Patterson.

Tori’s come home after her husband’s death, intent on escaping the public eye. It’s just her luck that Delon limps into her physical therapy office, desperate for help. All hard-packed muscle and dark-eyed temptation, he’s never been anything but a bad idea. And yet, seeing him again, Tori can’t remember what made her choose foolish pride over love…or why, with this second, final chance to right old wrongs, the smartest choice would be to run from this gorgeous rodeo boy as fast as her boots can take her.

A Conversation with Becca St.John, Author of THE GATEHOUSE (Lady Eleanor Mysteries #2)

Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today, Becca!

Happy Valentine’s Day, Becky! My favorite holiday.

Thanks for having me and for giving me the opportunity to share my love and my work.

My pleasure 🙂

What 5 things should readers know about you?

  1. I would be crippled without yoga. Something happened over a decade ago, when I stepped out of bed I could barely walk. No problem now, as long as I do my yoga. But if I skip it, for too long, there’s a price to pay. Probably should see a doctor but if I can fix a problem myself, that’s what I’ll do.
  2. Imagination shoots me into the clouds, meditation keeps me grounded. Spending so much of my time ‘imagining’ the lives of characters, I have to do something to come back to reality. Mediation does that. It clears my mind and takes me back to the basics. But that doesn’t always mean sitting in silence for hours. Swimming, kayaking, even doing the dishes are great times to meditate.
  3. Travel is my ‘down-time’ ~ In 2015 I went to 12 countries 75 days and will be going to 8 countries in the same amount of time this spring. There’s a very good chance, after this next trip, I’ll retire from travel, at least physically. Mentally, I will go back to remote and so may my characters!
  4. Shhhh, this is a secret. Don’t want to get carted off as a crazy woman but … Whether they are there or not, I leave gifts for elves and faeries and love the whimsy of it all. Sometimes it’s good to step back into childhood, honoring dreams and make-believe.
  5. Before moving to Florida, I lived in the mountains of Wyoming and had a labyrinth in a willow copse on my property. Loved walking that labyrinth. It was special.

But…why wouldn’t the elves and fairies be there? What do you mean by “make believe”? 😉

The labyrinth sounds fantastic!

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

The Gatehouse popped into my mind on a drive from San Diego to Los Angeles. I was riding in the car with another author who used to work in a school for the deaf. She talked about some of her teaching experiences and students who made it big. We discussed my next book for the Lady Eleanor Mysteries. The two conversations merged and whoosh, a whole new book emerged. It was a domino toppling moment that wasn’t nearly as random as it would seem. I had always been fascinated by deaf culture, even wrote, and produced, a play in deaf sign. We had to laugh, as I started to tell her my new idea she would say, “but why this?” or “why that?”  I’d scratch my head and answer, “I don’t know yet, the story is only just coming to me, right now, this very moment.” It works like that sometimes.

That is such an interesting story—I love it!

(And a deaf sign play—how cool! I took ASL I and II as my language in college, and loved it!)

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

Reading and writing have always been part of my life. So much so, that I didn’t think much of it. Just did it. Used writing to help earn a bit of cash in college, but never thought of it as a career. My family is full of writers and editors, so my efforts were not worth noting. But then the romance genre found me (really, it found me, I’m certain of it) and I found home.  “This is me,” I thought early in my romance reading career, “this is what I want to do, want to write.” And that was it.

I totally believe that romance finds you—you won’t get an argument there from me!

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

Right now, I’m preparing to travel and research for my next book in the Lady Eleanor Mysteries,.

Fantastic!

Here’s a short excerpt from The Gatehouse (book 2 in the series) with a hint to where my travels are taking me, what the next mystery will be, and whose heart will need mending:

Edmund diverted the conversation. “What were you speaking to Lady Eleanor about?”

Bentwood frowned, tilting his drink, coating the sides of his glass. “She’s going to the Far East with us. Spot of bother over there, sister missing, worrisome.”

“Egad! Missing? Who?” exclaimed Sir Michael.

The whole table turned. “My sister, in the Far East. Going to locate her. Taking Lady Eleanor.”

“Never!” Sir Michael gasped.

“Need a woman. Lady Bentwood would go charging off on her own, if I didn’t have a sensible, logical woman to stop her.”

Sir Michael snorted. “Lady Eleanor is just as likely to lead the charge. No, don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

“She’s agreed,” Lord Bentwood told him. “We leave in the morning. That’s why I’ve been so keen to get out of here. Just got word.”

“Your sister’s probably just gone off with some fellow, don’t you think?” Sir Michael drummed his fingers on the table. “Probably no more than that.”

“Her husband is there, looking for her,” Bentwood looked down at his drink, wishing his wife adored him the way his sister loved her husband. But his wife loved another man. Always had. “Cece is crazy about him. She’d not run off.” But Lady Bentwood would, given half a chance. He was certain of it.

🙂

What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?

As   usual, I have three books on my side table:

  1. Lord Scoundrel – which I’ve read multiple times and will, most likely, read many more times
  2. Married to a Bedouin – about a gal who married a Bedouin and lived in Petra back in the 1970’s.
  3. I study theology. The third book is related to that study and something I hold quietly dear.

An interesting mix!

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Devilishly handsome and deaf, a gentleman tries to protect his love from a killer he cannot hear.

Fantastic!

Thanks again for visiting, Becca, and happy Valentine’s Day! <3

About the author:

An Accidental Writer ~

Writing was a tool, not a toy, until a stay in an ancient (I swear it was haunted) hotel on a frightfully stormy night straight from a clichéd novel full of howling wind and creaking floors. The night drove me to a bookcase full of dog eared romances. Sleepless turned to fascination. Hooked I read old romances, new romances, both sexy and sweet until my own tales begged to be written.

About the book:

He can’t hear the murderer’s step but knows that all he loves is in danger …

Moments before his marriage, Christopher Sterry’s twin brother is murdered. One would expect Christopher to become the next Earl of Longford. No one would be surprised if he married his twin’s almost-bride, Helen Grove. She is, after all, his closest friend and confidante.

Except Christopher is deaf. The world outside Longford Manor believes that a deaf mute must also be a half-wit brute, unfit to be earl and, most certainly, capable of murdering his brother. He is the prime suspect – especially since he found the body.

Helen waits at the altar while her groom lies murdered in the folly. But there is no time to mourn. Christopher is in danger and so, it appears, is she. Ignoring her own risks, Helen crosses into the line of fire to protect the new earl. And in championing his cause, she comes to realize that it was not the dead twin she’d loved, but the deaf one.

Lady Eleanor solves crimes more thoroughly than any male magistrate. So when Christopher, her godson, is condemned without evidence, she sets out to prove both his innocence and his competence as earl. If she fails, Christopher will die… or be returned to an asylum worse than hell.

Book 2 ~ Lady Eleanor Mysteries ~ Regency romantic mystery with a touch of Gothic.

GoodreadsAmazonBarnes & NobleWRP

Excerpt:

Moments, later, they approached Carl Miller’s home. Meg stared at the two-story building. Even though she knew he was wealthy, she hadn’t expected such an elegant residence on this remote island. Several of the upper story rooms had balconies. A stone façade around the lower level gave the house a sturdy, solid look, while large windows added a light, airy touch. In front stood three totems painted in the traditional Northwest Indian colors of red, blue, and black.

Jones pulled the cart to a stop. “Gotta get the keys to your cottages from Laureen. You might as well come in and meet her.”

Meg followed Eric and Jones up a stone walkway lined with ferns to large double doors carved with Indian designs. Jones pushed open one door, and they stepped into a spacious, sky-lighted entry….

Footsteps sounded on the marble floor, and a woman appeared from the house’s interior. She wore tan slacks and a white tunic top. Her gray hair was cropped close on the top and sides, and long in the back.

“Welcome to Gemini.” Smiling, the woman extended her hand first to Meg and then to Eric. “I’m Laureen, Carl’s house manager.”

After greetings were exchanged, Jones said, “Where’re we putting ‘em?”

“Guest cottages. Miz Evans in Wolf House, Mr. Richards in Bear.”

“The cottages are named after Indian clans,” Eric commented.

Laureen nodded. “You’ll like ‘em. They’re very comfortable. Here’re your keys.” She dipped a hand into her tunic pocket and pulled out two key rings, handing one to Meg and the other to Eric. “Oh, and Carl wants you for cocktails before dinner so be back here by six. And don’tcha be late. Carl’s a stickler for bein’ on time.”

LOVE STORY
a Love Unexpectedly novel
Lauren Layne
Releasing February 14th, 2017
Loveswept

Over the course of one wild road trip, feuding childhood sweethearts get a second chance at love in this charming rom-com—a standalone novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Blurred Lines and Good Girl.

When Lucy Hawkins receives a job offer in San Francisco, she can’t wait to spread her wings and leave her small Virginia hometown behind. Her close-knit family supports her as best they can, by handing over the keys to a station wagon that’s seen better days. The catch? The cross-country trip comes with a traveling companion: her older brother’s best friend, aka the guy who took Lucy’s virginity hours before breaking her heart.

After spending the past four years and every last dime caring for his sick father, Reece Sullivan will do just about anything to break free of the painful memories—even if it means a two-week road trip with the one girl who’s ever made it past his carefully guarded exterior. But after long days of bickering in the car turn into steamy nights in secluded motel rooms, Reece learns that, when it comes to Lucy, their story is far from over. And this time, they just might have a shot at a happy ending.

Although listed as a title in the Love Unexpectedly Series, all books in the series stand alone.

“Spock, we’re giving you Horny!” my mom blurts out, apparently fed up with my denseness.

Her utterance is too much for my siblings to handle and they both burst out laughing, retreating into the kitchen to rejoin the party where there’s wine.

Oh what I wouldn’t give for wine right now.

“I, um . . . you’re giving me the car?” I ask.

“Because yours broke down,” my dad explains, walking forward to thump Horny’s dented hood.

“And this one’s . . . not broken down?” I ask skeptically.

Look, it’s not that I’m not grateful. My parents are trying to give me a car, I appreciate the sweetness of the gesture, it’s just . . .

Here’s the thing about Horny: he barely got us three kids through high school. I mean, Horny is the car that sputtered and shook making it the 3.2 miles to Jefferson High, no matter who was behind the wheel.

I’m even going to come all the way clean here and say that early on in my freshmen year, I was embarrassed showing up in Horny. Then I realized I was lucky to have a car at all, and well . . . I dunno, I guess Horny became a part of us Hawkins kids’ charm, because the station wagon was practically an institution from Craig’s high school reign all the way through Brandi’s.

But poor Horny quit working years ago. Much to Brandi’s chagrin, he gave up the ghost a mere two months before her high school graduation, and I spent the last bit of her senior year being picked up by my parents.

“He’s going to take you to California,” Dad says, giving the car another thump.

“Really?” I step forward and run a tentative finger along the familiar panel. He’s had a bath, so at least that’s something. “Because last I knew, he wouldn’t even make it out of the garage.”

“Yeah, well, we neglected him for a while, but he’s right as rain now,” Dad says, puffing out his chest as though Horny’s a fourth child.

“Like, as in he actually starts?”

“Purrs like a kitten,” my mom says with an emphatic nod, even though I know she doesn’t even like cats. “We didn’t believe it, but we took him to church on Sunday and there were no issues.”

I literally bite my tongue to keep from pointing out that this is hardly a feat. Sacred Presbyterian is 0.8 miles away from the house.

“You took Horny into a shop?” I ask, starting to warm to the idea of having a car again. I’m a little touched, actually. Money is tight for my parents. Dad’s a PE teacher, and Mom gives a mean winery tour, but the gig’s never paid much.

“Not exactly, it was more of a bartering situation,” Mom says.

“Yeah?” I say, going around to the driver’s seat, already giddy with the prospect of telling Oscar I’ll be able to come see him in Miami after all, even if I won’t exactly be riding in style.

“Reece agreed to fix him up.”

I’m lowering myself into the car as my dad says this, but I reverse so quickly I hit my head. My skull doesn’t even register the pain, because I’m too busy registering the hurt in my heart at the familiar name. “I’m sorry, what?”

“Reece,” my mom says, giving me a bemused look. “He’s always been handy with cars.”

“He fixed up the car in exchange for what?”

And then I feel—I actually feel—the air change around me as the side door to the garage opens, and a new presence sucks all the air out of the space.

I don’t turn around. I don’t move. But I feel his eyes on me. Over me.

“Reece is headed out to California too,” my oblivious mother chatters on. “It worked out perfectly actually. Now you two can ride together, and your dad and I don’t have to worry about you alone in the middle of nowhere with a twenty-something-year-old car.

They think the car is going to be the problem here? It’s not the car that’s toxic to me. It’s him.

Reece Sullivan. My brother’s best friend. My parents’ “other son.”

Slowly I force myself to turn, and even though I’m prepped, the force of that ice-blue gaze still does something dangerous to me.

He winks, quick and cocky, and I suck in a breath, and I have to wonder . . .

I wonder if my parents would feel differently about their little plan if they knew that their makeshift mechanic is the same guy that popped my cherry six years earlier under their very roof.

And then broke my heart twenty-four hours later.

New Release Review and Giveaway! LAW AND DISORDER by Heather Graham (The Finnegan Connection #1)

Synopsis:

Trust the enemy?

Desperate to escape her kidnappers, Kody Cameron can turn to only one man…and he’s holding a gun. Outnumbered and trapped in the deadly Everglades, she has little recourse, but something in this captor’s eyes makes her believe she can trust him. Does she dare to take the risk?

Undercover agent Nick Connolly has met Kody before and knows she might very well blow his cover. Though determined to maintain his facade, he can’t let Kody die. He won’t. And his decision to change his own rules of law and order are about to make all hell break loose.

Review:

A fairly quick read; I believe this book (first in The Finnegan Connection) is at least loosely connected to another series–a number of characters were briefly mentioned and/or made appearances here who were familiar to both Kody and Nick–but as a series starter it worked just fine as a standalone.

The romance here takes a second seat to the suspense/action plot, which is fine–we get our fill later on, when (we think!) the danger has passed. Or has it? 😉 The setting was intriguing (though a bit over-described at times)–it really made me want to visit the Everglades, though I have to admit doing so at gunpoint would not be my first choice. I was entertained by the story even if not quite drawn into it–some pretty big coincidences, and the plot was a bit thin in parts–still, I’d be interested to see where this series will head next.

Rating: 3 stars / C+

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

New Release and Giveaway! HIS FAKE ALIEN FIANCEE by Patricia Eimer (Out of this World #2)

His Fake Alien Fiancee
by Patricia Eimer
Out of this World #2
Publication Date: February 6, 2017
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Select Otherworld, Standalone, Sci-Fi, Romance, Funny, Fake Relationship

Synopsis:

Princess Perripraxis not only has to find a fiancé—and fast—she’s got to find one who doesn’t mind that her “no makeup” face has green and purple scales. Otherwise, Daddy Dearest has plans that don’t include Perri’s compliance. Candidate Number One: Her sexy human best friend, Brandt.

Bartender Brandt Turner didn’t need all those years in the army to teach him never to leave a man behind. Or an alien princess in need of a pretend fiancé. If she needs someone to play the lovesick fool to convince her dad to let her stay on Earth, well then, he’ll let the world think Cupid finally took him out.

But Perri’s father has no intention of playing nice—and he’s not above cruel and unusual alien torture to make things go his way. But Brandt is willing to complete the mission…however far he has to go.

Excerpt:

He lifted his head slightly and nudged hers back with his cheek, intending to kiss her forehead. To be tender. To be a friend.

But her lips were there and they looked like strawberries against her green skin and he knew even as her eyes widened and connected with his that this was a bad idea.

He brought his lips down on top of hers and he found that he didn’t care. Didn’t care that she was the princess of a galactic empire. That his best friend was in love with her sister. That she was green. That they were friends. That he’d promised himself he wasn’t going to get involved with someone he actually cared about.

Didn’t even care that the taste of her lips against his made him feel like he was falling off a cliff and into a serious pile of shit.

They both shifted, moving so they were facing, and he brought his hands up to cradle her face with his left while he wrapped his right around her waist, hoisting her off her own stool and into his lap.

She had her fingers entwined in his hair and was kissing him like he was her only source of air.

The tip of her tongue licked against his mouth, and he began to kiss back, chasing her into her own mouth. He tightened his grip on her, pressing their chests together, and he fought the urge to shift his hips into her, to maneuver them onto the top of his bar.

They were friends and they’d had too much to drink and she was upset and this was the last thing either of them needed.

She grabbed the front of his shirt right above the top button and jerked downward, ripping the shirt apart and sending buttons flying.

Right, then. He kept a tight grip on her hips so she didn’t fall off his lap and brought his other hand down to start fumbling with the knot that held her sheet-toga-ceremonial robe thing closed.

She let go of his shirt and started squirming, pulling the hem up, refusing to let go of his lips, and he tried his best to help her get the thing off over her head.

“Wait.” He broke his lips away from hers and wrapped his arms around her waist, hoisting her up as he stood and dropped her onto the bar, pulling the material off over her head, trying not to drool because how had he not realized that she’d been going commando under that sheet?

“Brandt.” She grabbed the sides of his dress shirt and pulled him close again, pressing their lips together, and suddenly his sweet little Perri had gotten forceful. “Didn’t you just tell me I’d been on Earth six months and I needed to go ahead and have sex already?”

“Well.” He wasn’t sure what to say. He’d been with a lot of women who liked it a lot of different ways. But he’d never been quite as turned on as he was right this very second with the little woman in front of him handling him like a rag doll.

“Yes?”

“And that it should be with someone who didn’t freak out when they found out I was green?”

“Uh-huh?” He studied her, some weird mixture of turned on and really fucking intimidated.

“That leaves three possibilities. Anderson Fox is not interested in having sex with a female. Mattias is in love with my sister. And then there’s you. Ding ding ding, Brandt Turner, you are a winner. Now take me upstairs and take my earth virginity already.”

“Um…” he muttered once before she managed to press their lips together again, and all he could think was, “Sure.

Okay. Best to give the lady what she wants.”

“Now,” she growled.

And to think, he’d thought she was the mild-mannered alien princess in the lot.

Contemporary Romance
ebook, 217 pages
February 17th 2017 by Montlake Romance

Bellamy Sullivan’s life is hardly regal. She’s a waitress from Ohio who’s been on her own since she was sixteen, working several jobs while her dreams of being a fashion designer stay just that. But everything changes when PR maven and soon-to-be-royal Lemon Beauchamp drops in to announce that Bellamy is a princess. Unfortunately, Bellamy’s newly assigned bodyguard is the last man she wants to see.

A year ago, the royal family of Monterra tasked Enzo Rannalli with confirming Bellamy’s heritage, which meant he had to get very close to her. Enzo got the confirmation he needed, but he didn’t expect their connection to be so meaningful. And he didn’t expect his sudden departure to break the young princess’s heart.

In exchange for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to kick-start her fashion career, Bellamy agrees to star on a royal reality show that will match her with the world’s most eligible bachelors. But after a series of disastrous dates make her even more grateful for Enzo’s company, she wonders if her fairy-tale ending is waiting to happen off camera.

About the Author

Bestselling author Sariah Wilson has never jumped out of an airplane, never climbed Mount Everest, and is not a former CIA operative. She has, however, been madly, passionately in love with her soul mate and is a fervent believer in happily ever afters—which is why she writes romance. She grew up in Southern California, graduated from Brigham Young University (go Cougars!) with a semi-useless degree in history, and is the oldest of nine (yes, nine) children. She currently lives with the aforementioned soul mate and their four children in Utah, along with three tiger barb fish, a cat named Tiger, and a recently departed hamster that is buried in the backyard (and has nothing at all to do with tigers). New Release (Box Set) Review! JUSTIFIABLE CAUSE by Adirenne Girodano (THE CHASE, THE EVASION, and THE CAPTURE)

Included in this novella series are:

THE CHASE

Hard-driving attorney Jo Pomeroy is as determined as she is sexy—in other words, a major pain in NYPD Sergeant Gabe Townsend’s butt. Working together on a high-profile task force charged with busting sales of counterfeit goods has been rocky from the start. And Jo’s penchant for trouble is as difficult to ignore as her spectacular legs.

The world of knock-offs isn’t as frivolous as it appears. The purses are fake, but the danger is all too real—and Jo seems hell-bent on putting herself in the middle of it. Her investigations have uncovered valuable leads for Gabe’s team, but they’ve also drawn the wrong kind of attention. Now, she’s on the radar of a mysterious smuggler not afraid to use violence to evade the law. At the risk of their lives—and their hearts—Gabe and Jo must find him before he finds them.

THE EVASION

His role on an anti-counterfeiting task force earned NYPD Sergeant Gabe Townsend the catch of a lifetime—tough as nails but sexy as hell Jo Pomeroy. The woman has a body that drives him wild and a way of attracting danger that’s making him crazy. And her relentless pursuit of an elusive criminal has his protective instincts in overdrive.

Jo didn’t get to be a hotshot attorney by giving up easily. Her high-end clients count on her to keep knockoffs of their luxury goods off the streets. Distractions are the last thing she needs. Especially six-foot-three, hard body calendar-worthy distractions.

She failed once, letting a smuggler slip through her grasp. Next time, he’ll have nowhere to run. A lead takes Jo and Gabe to a small town where not everything—or anyone—is as innocent as it seems. Making this bust could be the biggest break of her career…but at what risk to her newfound love?

THE CAPTURE

Sun, fun, and Jo Pomeroy, the sexiest, most-driven attorney around, await NYPD Sergeant Gabe Townsend in Los Angeles. A trip to the West Coast is the perfect vacation—he won’t have to hide his relationship with Jo from the New York anti-counterfeiting task force, and he can finally enjoy some overdue time-off with the woman of his dreams.

Jo makes undercover deals for fake merchandise, but her feelings for Gabe are all too real. Unfortunately, she isn’t the one on vacation, and while she can’t wait to get her heartthrob alone, she also can’t say no when the mayor of Los Angeles asks for her help in ridding the city of illegal knockoffs.

Being too dedicated for her own good backfires when Jo ends up on a killer’s hit list. Gabe wants Jo to back down; she’s not about to. As the danger escalates, so do their feelings for each other. All Jo’s ever wanted is to expand her task force nationwide. Now, with her life on the line, Jo must decide if heading the taskforce is worth sacrificing it all, including a future with the man she loves.

Reviews:

THE CHASE

So much fun! Finally, I got the chance to read about Jo and Gabe before they were (technically) “Jo and Gabe”! 🙂 Snappy dialogue, fantastic chemistry (as a bonus in this one, it’s a forbidden work romance, and they’re still fighting it!), and a fast-paced story all add up to an explosive series start. I was glad that this one was novella-length, because I had a lot to do this week and I didn’t want to stop reading once I’d started! The shorter length totally worked here, and since I was reading the box set, I didn’t have to wait to find out what the next phase of their brand-new non-work relationship would bring.

The Chase has everything a good romantic suspense story needs–and you won’t be able to stop with just one of this series! 😉

Rating: 4 stars/ A-

THE EVASION

Once again, the action is non-stop for intellectual property attorney Jo Pomeroy and her now-beau NYPD sergeant Gabe Townsend. They’re keeping their relationship under wraps, which is stressing them out, but when they’re alone and away from work? Watch out, because these two are hotter than ever together! The main bad guy from book one ( The Chase ) is still on the loose, though, and Jo and Gabe are determined to bring him to justice.

Their quest takes them down south, and OMG watching alpha male and super-intense Gabe have to deal with a small town sheriff who is out of his office (leaving it locked and empty) more often than he’s in it? So. Funny. Jo is up to her old tricks too, trying to do it all in her quest to rid the world of counterfeit items and practically giving Gabe a heart attack in the process. Seriously, it’s amazing these two make it through to book 3, but I sure am glad they did!

Once again the novella format absolutely worked here, and Ms. Giordano’s tightly developed plot kept me on the edge of my seat right up to the very end…at which point I was more than ready to dive into book 3 ( The Capture )!

Rating: 4 stars / A-

THE CAPTURE

I actually read book 3 for the first time a while ago–at that time it was the only one in the series I’d read–and I was thrilled to re-read it again, this time right after devouring books 1 and 2. Have I mentioned how much I love Jo and Gabe’s relationship? In book 3,it reminded me a lot of Castle and Beckett’s back when they were still trying to keep theirs a secret; like them, Jo and Gabe aren’t exactly fooling much of anyone but, hey–nice effort 😉

Like any good romantic suspense hero and heroine, even being on vacation doesn’t stop the danger. (Also like any good romantic suspense hero and heroine, they pretty much invite trouble to join them on their trip out of town.) An accidental witness to murder, Jo’s soon on the hit list of a dangerous motorcycle club, and Gabe has to work with an LA lieutenant who’s been a part of Jo’s new task force to keep her safe.

Only, you know, he’s not really working, because he’s on “vacation”.

Can Gabe keep Jo safe? Will Jo be able to stop a counterfeit cigarette ring? Will they ever have a real vacation, with actual relaxation and a lack of death threats and everything? You’ll have to read The Capture to find out!

(Meanwhile I’ll be sitting here quietly, hoping that Ms. Giordano is going to give us more Jo and Gabe in the not-so-distant future…)

New Release! COME CLOSER by Brenda Rothert

Come Closer
by Brenda Rothert

An adult standalone, contemporary romance

Book Blurb:

Sometimes appearances deceive. Take me, for instance. I look like a respectable doctor with his shit together, but the rural Montana mental hospital I work at is actually a sanctuary from my demons. At just thirty-five years old, I’ve already failed on an epic scale. Treating patients at Hawthorne Hill is part of my atonement.

I’ve found peace when a new patient turns me inside out. Allison Cole is a beautiful, haunted survivor who fell into silence after witnessing a murder. But even without words, I’m drawn to her. The closer we get, the more I’m tempted to cross my professional boundaries and give in to my desire.

Soon I find myself in a desperate race to put the pieces of Allison’s silence together. Her life becomes inextricably entwined with mine as I fight to save the second chance I never thought I’d have. I’ll break whatever rules I have to in order to protect this woman who’s been to hell and back. For her, I’ll do harm.

Excerpt:

“How are you today, Allison?” Dr. Heaton asks, her familiar tone making it seem like we’re old friends.

I stare out the window of her office, wondering if the weather outside is as nice as it looks. The sun is shining bright in a clear blue sky again, but it’s April. In my hometown of Chicago, April can be a bitch. It’s cold, rainy, and dreary.

And I’m even farther north now. I bet it’s chilly outside, the sun’s rays just giving the illusion of warmth.

“You can talk to me,” Heaton says for at least the twentieth time since I’ve been here. “Everything said in this room is confidential. I’m here to help you work through the grief I know you’re feeling.”

I glance around her office. There are framed diplomas on the wood-plank walls and bookshelves with books and picture frames arranged just so. The photos show smiling people posing for the camera, all of them smiling so perfectly they could be the paper photos that come in picture frames when you first buy them.

A fountain in the shape of a bunch of bamboo gurgles in a corner, and neatly trimmed bonsai trees line the ledge of the large window behind Heaton’s desk.

Even the box of tissues on the coffee table in front of me has been methodically placed, one corner of the square in front of me so it makes a diamond shape. The top tissue is pulled up, its sides still tucked neatly inside. It looks like a tissue fountain, beautifully shaped into a parallel pattern.

That’s not the tissue box of a doctor whose patients feel comfortable crying. If the box were half-empty, with little white specks of tissue dust dotting the coffee table, I’d at least feel like it was okay to use one.

A smile quirks at my lips as I imagine whipping out a tissue or two. I’m picturing Heaton descending on the box right after me to tidy up the tissue fountain and brush away the tissue flecks.
