About TOO CLOSE TO CALL:

All-American wide receiver Kyler Tate’s life is about to change. A fairytale college career skyrocketed him to the NFL draft. Adoration and opportunity are thrown in his direction wherever he goes, thanks to being chosen in the first round by the Los Angeles Rage.
None of the accolades mean anything, though, without his high school sweetheart, Bree Justice, by his side. Four years ago, she walked away from Kyler, choosing a quiet life over the flash and notoriety his career would someday bring.

Now he’s back in their Indiana hometown, refusing to leave for Los Angeles without her. Demanding she give their life together a shot. Her heart never stopped bleeding for the love of her life, but Bree’s decision was final. Too bad their wild attraction has only been amplified by their separation, and Kyler won’t quit until Bree is wearing his ring.

Excerpt:

“Bree.” Her blood snapped with electricity at the sound of her name, said in that low drawl. Kyler stepped to the forefront of the crowd. The green eyes that still graced her dreams zeroed in, raking over her like they couldn’t help it.

Heaven above, four years looked incredible on him. Extra inches had been added everywhere. His height. The athletic breadth of his shoulders. The corded biceps that tested the stitching of his T-shirt sleeves. Even his thighs, which were wrapped up in faded denim, were exploding with muscle; thighs she’d spent a good portion of her youth perched on since Kyler never allowed her to sit anywhere but his lap, no matter where they were or whether it was appropriate. “Hello.”

“Hello,” she whispered. “You’re in town.”

His slow nod was so familiar a ripple moved through her. “Here for the week. Can I get you that coffee?”

“No.” She flushed over her own abruptness. “I meant to say, I can’t stay. I’m going to be late for an appointment.”

“Fine. I’ll walk you out.”

His expression dared her to say no. Challenged her. And for the first time since Kyler left, sexual awareness danced in her middle, sending a swift tremble down the length of her legs. Because her body hadn’t forgotten what often lay on the other side of those challenges. “Fine,” she breathed. “Suit yourself.”

For all his sexual energy, Kyler was a gentleman, straight down to the soles of his feet. So Bree wasn’t one bit surprised when his long gait ate up the distance between them. He reached over her head to push open the glass door, sending his scent crashing into her senses, the combination so familiar, Bree’s nipples tightened until she winced. Grassy fields and Nautica Blue aftershave.

Their gazes clashed, but Bree couldn’t decide if he’d worn the scent on purpose. His steady eyes gave nothing away. Before hers could betray her curiosity, Bree turned and passed through the door Kyler held open. And hell if it wasn’t the longest walk in history, his presence behind her looming larger than a mountain. Every eyeball in the diner was sure to be on them and the attention made Bree twitchy, her fingers yanking on the strings of her hoodie.

She needed to get this reunion over with as soon as possible. Being around Kyler would only make her wonder what might have been. That kind of thinking was pointless. Destructive.

Back in high school, the writing had been on the wall when it came to Kyler. Everyone knew he’d been destined for greatness. That he would shake off Bloomfield and put his name in the history books. She’d been selfish to stay with him for so long, absorbing his love and attention, all the while knowing she’d wave good-bye to him someday. The decision was a painful one, but it had been made and now she would stick to it.

Review:

Too Close to Call is a sweet second chance romance. It’s #3.5 in the Romancing the Clarksons series, but since there isn’t a single Clarkson to be seen here (unless I missed them? I was really trying to keep an eye out, though…) I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it absolutely works as a standalone.

Too Close has a very short time frame–making it perfect for a novella–which gives Kyler’s “I’m here to talk her into marrying me before I have to leave again” agenda special urgency.

Which makes his hesitancy to talk to her about a relationship that goes beyond friendship? Kind of confusing.

Still, this book has plenty of hot, steamy moments and Kyler and Bree clearly have an abundance of chemistry, which makes this a quick, fun summer read. Their lack of communication gets frustrating at times (Just talk to her, already! was a common refrain for both this reader and Kyler’s mom…) but seriously, everything is made better by an absolutely adorkable epilogue, which made every aggravating moment before that fade to black.

Belmont’s. Book. Is. Next. Woot!

About Tessa Bailey:

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.

Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.

She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eight years and four-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

They say life can change in an instant…

After losing her sister in a devastating car accident, chef Quinn Weller is finally getting her life back on track. She appears to have it all: a loving family, a dream job in one of L.A.’s hottest eateries, and a gorgeous boyfriend dying to slip an engagement ring on her finger. So why does she feel so empty, like she’s looking for a missing piece she can’t find?

The answer comes when a lawyer tracks down Quinn and reveals a bombshell secret and a mysterious inheritance that only she can claim. This shocking revelation washes over Quinn like a tidal wave. Her whole life has been a lie.

On impulse, Quinn gives up her job, home, and boyfriend. She heads up the coast to the small hometown of Wildstone, California, which is just a few hours north, but feels worlds apart from Los Angeles. Though she doesn’t quite fit in right away, she can’t help but be drawn to the town’s simple pleasures…and the handsome, dark-haired stranger who offers friendship with no questions asked.

As Quinn settles into Wildstone, she discovers there’s another surprise in store for her. The inheritance isn’t a house or money, but rather something earth shattering, something that will make her question everything she thought she knew about herself, about her family. Now with a world of possibilities opening up to Quinn, she must decide if this new life is the one she was always meant to have—and the one that could finally give her the fulfillment she’s searched so long for.

Excerpt:

To say that Tilly had had a bad day, a bad week, a bad month was an understatement. But as she stared down from the tree house, looking into a face that so resembled her own, somehow, in spite of not being able to breathe, she managed to find her voice. “I don’t need you,” she said, hating that she sounded thin and quivery, like she’d been crying.

She had not been crying.

At least not that she would admit to.

She hadn’t been in the tree house in a while. Not since she’d gone through a rough patch at school when the girls had been bitches and the teachers jerks, and her mom had been on her about her grades, and all she’d wanted to do was make herself invisible. But no matter how much she’d wished for superpowers, including invisibility, they’d never come.

So she came here to vanish. The tree itself was tall and stable, and it always protected her. She’d named it Kevin.

Kevin had come through for her more than anyone else, with the exception of her mom.

The first time she’d sat up here, her mom had freaked out and called the cops to report her missing. When they’d found her, her mom had gotten a ladder and climbed up to the tree house, and with tears in her eyes she’d said, “Don’t fly away from me yet, darling, I’m not ready.”

After that, Tilly always had told her mom whenever she’d needed to be invisible and her mom had understood.

But now she was gone. There’d been no one left to give a shit if she disappeared or not. Especially not Quinn, a mysterious sister she hadn’t even known about. “I don’t need you,” she repeated.

“Well, that’s fair,” Quinn said. “I don’t like to need anyone either. You going to come down so we can talk?”

“No.”

“Is there a ladder?”

“It rotted.”

“Okay then.” And to Tilly’s shock, Quinn inhaled deeply and then began to climb the tree herself. “Yikes, they’re some seriously gigantor ants.”

“And killer squirrels,” Tilly said.

Maybe two whole feet off the ground, Quinn froze, looking terrified. “Killer squirrels?”

“They throw acorns with deadly accuracy,” Tilly said. “And the kamikaze blue jays are vicious, so watch out.”

Quinn searched the tree with concern, making Tilly laugh for the first time in a long time. “Are you afraid of squirrels and blue jays?”

“Of course not,” Quinn said. “I’m afraid of killer squirrels and kamikaze blue jays. In fact, there’s a squirrel starting at me right now with beady, shifty little eyes.”

“City girl.”

Review:

Loved this one!

Lost and Found Sisters is chock-full of wonderful characters–even if at first glance they don’t seem all that wonderful 😉 Ms. Shalvis does a fantastic job (as usual) of giving us flawed characters and making us love them, warts and all.

Quinn’s had her life thrown for a loop–she still is very clearly not remotely close to being over her younger sister’s death two years earlier, when she finds out that 1) she was adopted 2) her birth mother has just died and 3) she has a younger sister, who up to this point was raised by the mother who gave Quinn away. As much as I loved Quinn’s inner (and outer!) snark–Tilly, Mick, and Lena were especially adept at bringing her skills to the fore–I’ll admit I wanted her to get over her resentment at her birth mother much quicker than she does, but her inability to do so gave her yet another way that she had to grow, to get over herself and her fears and preconceived ideas so she could get to her own HEA.

Tilly, Tilly, Tilly–where do I start with Tilly? I love her and feel Quinn’s frustration with her, all at the same time. Oh, that girl–both wise beyond her years, and as young and uncertain as every other fifteen-year-old girl out there. Even though she would have hated it, I just wanted to hug that girl every time she showed up on the page. Well, maybe 50-75% of those times I might have wanted to give her a good shake first…but then a hug, definitely. A good 90% of my highlights in this book–and there are a good many highlights in my digital copy–are from the excerpts of Tilly’s journal that start each chapter. OMG, that girl.

Mick is a fantastic character, with a scary bug removing prowess that is so important to any true hero. He’s almost too perfect here–denying that he feels any pull at all to the hometown he’s left in the dust is pretty much his only flaw–but still, I loved him and all the support he gave Quinn along the way.

Lena starts the story off as the worst kind of you-know-what, but by the end of the story I was praying that she’d get her own book. Surely she will, yes? And Boomer? Skye? Even Cliff, the HP lookalike lawyer? All worthy of their own books 🙂

The animals in this book, of course, were also all stars in their own way–Coop, Tink, those chickens, heck, even those scary bugs–the story wouldn’t be the same without them! Two thumbs way, way, up!

In short, I loved my first visit to Wildstone, and absolutely cannot wait until Ms. Shalvis takes me back for another visit. Fingers crossed that it will be soon… 😉

New Release Review! LOST WITHOUT YOU by M. O’Keefe (The Debt #1)

Lost Without You
by Molly O’Keefe

Synopsis:

ALL DEBTS MUST BE PAID

Tommy

Seven years ago, I thought I could save Beth, the girl I loved from the monster who was supposed to take care of us. I thought I could keep Beth and all the other kids at St. Jude’s Home for Court Placed Juveniles safe.

I failed. Badly. Now we all have blood on our hands and owe a dangerous man a very dangerous debt. We don’t know when he’ll come calling for payment, but when he does – we pay, or we suffer.

When my turn comes, I’m ready for anything.

Except seeing Beth again.

LOVE IS NEVER FREE

Beth

No one ever tells you that the cost of having your dreams come true is literally every single other part of your life. Yes, I’m a huge pop star these days, but I’m pretty much a mess, too.

I’ve spent my life hiding behind disguises, make-up and costumes, all to protect myself from the kind of pain that comes from revealing your true self to someone.

I did that once. With Tommy. The only person I ever loved. It didn’t turn out so well.

And now, with everything else falling apart around me, I’m suddenly in the backseat of his car.

Being kidnapped.

And the past we’ve both tried to run from is catching up with us.

Contains The Debt: A Prologue and 50,000 more words in the continuation of Tommy and Beth’s story.

Review:

I should have been prepared after her Everything I Left Unsaid series… Once again Ms. O’Keefe has left us at a major OMG moment at the end of the first full novel in her The Debt series, and I’m dying to get my hands on the next book! (Where I Belong, not out until June 26…sigh.)

Like the prequel novella (The Debt), Lost Without You draws you right in to the world of (now-seven-years-older) Tommy and Beth from the very beginning, not letting you go until the very last page–where the before-mentioned OMG moment ensures that the “letting go” involves some kicking and screaming on the part of the reader. (Wait, what? What do you mean, I have to wait to find out what happens???) Also like her Everything I Left Behind series, this one is pretty dark in tone and brings on the angst–these young adults seem to have been living the life every parent hopes their children never will. (Well, except for maybe Beth’s mother–what is up with her? Hopefully we’ll find out in the next book, because that whole situation seems worth another OMG or two. Or possibly a dozen.)

Life has been better since they left St. Jude’s–sort of. However, Tommy’s mostly alone, except for Simon, who is gone more than he’s around, and Pest, Tommy’s squirrel/dog. Beth is…well, I’m not going to give it away ahead of time, but Beth’s pretty much alone too, even though she spends her days literally surrounded by people. She’s still having trouble sleeping, so much so that her daily life involves a pretty scary cocktail of possibly not-quite-legal drugs from morning to night. Neither of them has managed to get over each other, and neither has been able to truly put the events at St. Jude’s in the past–Tommy even more so than Beth, since he has the complication of the “debt.”

The debt comes due early on, and it brings Beth and Tommy back together, though from the start you know it’s not going to be a sunshine and roses kind of reunion. But GAH, these two are so good together…and then she leaves us hanging. Hopefully I can find something to do to keep me occupied until June 26 and not obsessing over what’s happening with Tommy and Beth…

Darn you, M. O’Keefe! 😉

New Release and Giveaway! RISE by Sierra Cross (Coven of Fire #1)

Rise
Sierra Cross
(Coven of Fire, #1)
Publication date: June 15th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy

I closed the door on magic long ago…the day it made me an orphan.

Ten years ago, the Coven of Fire sacrificed their lives—my mother among them—to hold off an overwhelming demonic force. Now it’s back.

As a poorly-paid bartender, how can any of this be my problem? But Callie, another orphan of that battle, swears I’m the key to reviving the coven. And there’s an incredibly sexy guardian stranded on my couch who’s promising to help me stop the demons and keep the veil between the realms standing.

One problem: I’ve never been able to use magic. Our local bad boy warlock assures me I have the talent, but even if I did, we don’t have enough witches to complete a coven. The only way to survive is to pull together this pack of magicborn misfits, who have more secrets than spells, into a makeshift coven.

Can we—three untrained witches, a sarcastic warlock, and an overly intense guardian—take back the city…before the demongate falls and the forces that killed my mother destroy us too?

EXCERPT:

Startled, I flailed backward. Losing my grip on all six bottles. With a sickening crash they toppled to the stone floor, exploding on impact. The crisp smell of alcohol punctured the dank air.

My heart was still thundering, but I saw no one. “Who’s there?” I demanded.

A figure came into view. Not like he stepped out of the shadows…more like he materialized in front of me. Tall. Powerfully built. With short brown hair and a lean angular face covered in bruises and bloody scrapes. I could have drawn that rugged face, and all its battle scars, from memory.

I forced myself to look into his dark, knowing eyes. The eyes that I’d once allowed to see into my deepest grief. “Matt?” My voice came out higher, younger than I expected. “I didn’t think you were ever coming back.”

“Alexandra…kid, we need to talk.” Matt’s gravelly voice—a voice I hadn’t heard since I was fourteen years old—was low and serious. “I’ve waited over a year for you to come down here. Don’t know how much longer I can hold this form. So listen and don’t interrupt.”

I’d almost forgotten how bossy Matt could be for a ghost. Well, ethereal being anyway. Despite his torn T-shirt and jeans, he had a palpable air of authority, like some kind of rogue commando. The impatient blaze in his eyes would be intimidating, if I didn’t know him. Actually, it still was. But as blown away as I was to see him again, my life had changed since the last time he’d paid me an astral visit. Since then, I’d learned that I had no business interacting with supernatural beings.

“I’m not a kid anymore, Matt,” I said, as firmly as I could. “And I’m not part of your world. Look…you helped me back then, I’ll always be grateful. But I think it would be best if you left now.”

“That’s because you don’t have all the information yet.” He folded his muscular arms, which looked so real and powerful I had to remind myself that they, like the rest of his strapping body, weren’t physically here in the room but in another realm entirely. “Once you’re up to speed on the magical dangers facing our city—”

“Thanks, but I have enough problems to deal with. You know, in the real world.” I couldn’t bring myself to tell Matt that I’d been officially declared magically deficient. Not when he’d always referred to me as “the next coven leader,” after my mother. Instead, I glanced at the shards at my feet and shook my head in despair. Randy was definitely going to make me pay for these broken vodka bottles. Just add it to my tab. “Sorry, but you need to leave me alone, so I can deal with this, okay?”

I started upstairs to get the broom…but didn’t make it past the third step before his form appeared again on the next highest step. Inches between us.

“You have no idea what your real problems are, Alexandra.”

I froze.

Walk right through him, I told myself. You’ve done it before. But Matt’s chiseled face, swathed in desperation, held my full attention. Something had changed there since I last saw him—startling, given that he was incorporeal. In the last ten years, he hadn’t aged one hour. Funny, how I used to think of him as an older guy. Now he looked about my age. The dark purple bruises flowering along his square jaw hadn’t healed. Nor had the bloody gash down his pillowy lower lip—the one part of him that looked incongruously boyish. It was his eyes that had changed.

“I need your help, Alexandra.” His dark eyes, once warm and charming, burned with an urgency that put fear into my heart. “Please.”

New Release Review! THE DEBT by M. O’Keefe (The Debt #.5)

The Debt

by Molly O’Keefe

Synopsis:

LOVE AND SECOND CHANCES ARE NOT FREE

For the five kids who live at St. Jude’s Home for Court Placed Juveniles, life is a nightmare.

Carissa, the youngest, has been there the longest. And barely speaks. Rosa is sixteen and pregnant.

Simon keeps his head down and studies, hoping to get back the life he lost.

Beth and Tommy, in the middle of the darkness, have found each other, and all they want is to be together. But when they get caught making out at school, it puts everyone in danger. Tommy is used to the beatings from their foster father, but when Beth is singled out for punishment, Tommy can’t sit back and let it happen.

AND ALL DEBTS MUST BE PAID

What happens that night rips apart the lives of the five teenagers forever.

After the blood has been spilled, a bargain is made. A deal with the devil that should have solved things. It should have fixed everything.

But nothing is free – not love, not innocence, and certainly not freedom. And sooner or later, all debts must be paid…

Review:

The Debt does exactly what it needs to–introduces readers to the five teens who survived the horrific St. Jude’s Home for Court Placed Juveniles, vividly shows what happened on their last night there, and sets up the concept of “the debt” that will be a major plot factor in the next two series books.

In short–it gives you just enough to make you want more, sand want it now! Fortunately for me, my copy of book #1 (Lost Without You) included this prequel novella, so I didn’t have to wait!

Though book #2 is another story…how soon is its release???

New Release Review and Giveaway! THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY by Leigh Himes

Summary:

Meet Abbey Lahey . . .

Overworked mom. Underappreciated publicist. Frazzled wife of an out-of-work landscaper. A woman desperately in need of a vacation from life–and who is about to get one, thanks to an unexpected tumble down a Nordstrom escalator.

Meet Abbey van Holt . . .

The woman whose life Abbey suddenly finds herself inhabiting when she wakes up. Married to handsome congressional candidate Alex van Holt. Living in a lavish penthouse. Wearing ball gowns and being feted by the crème of Philadelphia society. Luxuriating in the kind of fourteen-karat lifestyle she’s only read about in the pages of Town & Country.

The woman Abbey might have been . . . if she had said yes to a date with Alex van Holt all those years ago.

Review:

Who hasn’t looked at their life at some point and wondered, what if…?

For Abbey Lahey, her “what if?” moment was triggered by seeing a picture of a guy she turned down years earlier in a spread in a swanky magazine. She’s had a pretty frustrating day–week, month, even–and suddenly wonders if she hadn’t said no to Alex van Holt all those years ago, wouldn’t her life be a million times easier?

Okay, so you pretty much know from the synopsis and experience with the genre how things are going to end up–no huge surprises are in store for you when you read this book. You’re in it for the journey, and fortunately the journey here is both fun and engaging. Abbey is a sympathetic if sometimes frustrating character, and it’s easy to root for her from the very first page. The glimpses that Ms. Hines gives us throughout the book of Abbey’s life with Jimmy were some of my favorite bits of the whole book, and kept me turning the pages to see when and how she would realize what she had and manage to get back to it.

The One That Got Away is a debut book from an author I’ll definitely be looking for more from.

SNEAK PREVIEW:

I surveyed the surroundings. If I escaped into the woods, Lucas would find me. The shifter’s nose had to be as good as my wolves’. That was why Ares had brought him along. I wondered what his animal was. Judging from his size, he could be a white lion or a bear.

If I escaped to the plains, the guardians would spot me. They weren’t in league with me yet. If Ares caught me running away, he would chain me for the rest of the trip.

“Why are we stopping here, Ares?” the horned Dragonian asked.

“Freyja needs a bath,” Ares said with irritation.

“The wolf girl?” the horned one asked. “And you let her have her way? We need to be on our way. We’ve wasted enough time just tracking her.”

Ares snarled. “I’ll decide what we need or don’t need.”

The others gathered around in the clearing, sitting on the rocks. Some of them took off their boots with satisfied groans.

That was exactly what I’d planned for them to do—to get in the water with me. Over four months on the road, rushing from one place to another to look for me, they had to be desperate for the feel of a warm woman. When they saw me naked, their needs would be raging. And when they came for me, they’d get what they deserved.

I would soon be reunited with my pack.

I removed my gloves, kicked off my boots, and dropped my cloak. I breathed in the fresh, damp air. The lake smelled different from the hot spring in my forest, but its earthy scent blending with the sweet honeysuckle was equally pleasant.

What would come next might not be as pleasant, but I had to gain back my freedom.

Within seconds, I was clad in only my undergarments. My skin prickled with exhilaration as it met the clean air.

Ares cleared his throat to remind me of my modesty. If he was so concerned about my decency, why wasn’t he turning around as well?

His men stopped what they were doing and stared at me.

I slowly pulled the last of my garments over my head and lazily stretched my limbs. My bountiful breasts and perky, red nipples were generous for every eye to see and appreciate.

As I twisted my torso for another long stretch and bent down, I saw the men’s jaws drop in shock. Yet none of them moved their heated gaze from me.

I straightened and turned away from them, my fingers on the top lines of my panties, ready to pull it off my long, toned legs.

“Freyja!” Ares shouted.

I wheeled toward him. “What?” I asked innocently.

“Turn around!” he roared at his men. “Don’t fucking look at her if you want your fucking eyes stay in their sockets!”

Of course, they wanted their eyes staying in their sockets. The men obeyed, though slowly.

Wonderful! Ares—the prude—had just sabotaged my perfect plan.

But he wasn’t that prudent since he himself hadn’t turned around. His gaze, heated, dark, and furious, locked with mine. I tilted my head in challenge. What’s the harm in having a look? You’re looking.

His gaze dipped lower to my breasts, then lower—I’d pulled my panties half an inch down. When he tore his eyes from my body and stayed on my face by sheer will, a sudden fire of possessiveness leapt in them, turning his irises deeply molten gold.

“Stop what you’re doing,” he said, his voice hoarse as if he hadn’t spoken for a while.

“Why?” I asked.

“Shouldn’t you cover yourself?” He seemed incredulous at my innocent question.

“But I’m going to have a bath,” I said. “Who bathes with their clothes on?”

“There are men around!” he said. “You can’t go traipsing around naked in the wilderness.”

“Why do you think I even consider any of them, or you,” I asked, “a man? Haven’t you seen a naked woman before? I’m sure your men need to wash themselves, too. Their smell, yours included, nearly choked me half to death from a mile away.”

Actually he smelled really good.

I heard someone chuckle. Ares growled nastily and the chuckles died off immediately.

“It’s a big lake,” I said with a small shrug. “There’s plenty of room for all of us.”

“Like hell I’ll let them share the lake with you naked,” he said. “There’re social rules.”

“But you just said we’re in the wilderness,” I said, putting confusion into my voice. “Who’s going to govern the rules?”

“I am,” he said. Then he yelled at the men. “Go patrol the perimeter and don’t look this way.”

The men picked up their weapons and slowly scattered.

“Are you sending them away so you can get into the lake with me alone?” I asked.

“No, I’m not getting in the lake with you,” he said. “But I’ll watch you. If you think you’re clever enough to pull this stunt and slip away, think twice. So far, I’ve been courteous. But if you keep causing trouble, you’ll force my hand. Then I’ll have to get rough with you and tie you up and drag you behind me. I don’t care that Ventus has taken a liking to you. Just remember, his fealty is always to me.”

I pulled my panties off and tossed it on top of the pile of my clothes. Dark fire leapt in his eyes and his gaze drifted down toward the valley between my thighs. He wanted me. He wanted me badly. He looked like he was ready to stalk toward me.

Did I really want him to die? My body tensed at the thought.

Ares inhaled sharply, his knuckles turning white on his sides, but he didn’t move toward me.

“Earth,” I said, walking toward the lake. “All this drama over a bath.”

“By undressing yourself like that in front of my men,” he spat, “you put yourself in danger and them in a tough spot. If any of them loses control and touches you, I would have to punish them severely.”

“What about you?” I asked over my shoulder, my bare feet hitting the cool water.

“I have enough self-control,” he snarled.

“Right, I’ve learned it the hard way,” I said, intentionally dipping my gaze down at the bulge at his groin covered by his sculpted armor.

His eyes glittered with amber fire. “You’re now my responsibility, Freyja,” he said. “I have to guarantee that you’re well treated and unharmed until the day you’re allowed to go your way.”

“I’m so touched,” I said.

Obviously, he didn’t like my tone since he was probably expecting my gratitude. His next words were full of acid. “You have no problem getting completely naked but flustered at my hard-on,” he asked. “Why is that?”

“You go figure it out.” I brushed him off, knowing that would irk him more.

When I sent him one last glance filled with disdain, I caught such ravenous hunger in his eyes that the heat pooled within my belly again.
