(Reckless Falls, #5)
Publication date: May 16th 217
Genres: Adult, Romance

I was just about to ruin the biggest deal of my career when I ran into Charlie Kendall.

Literally. She hit me with her car.

The luckiest fender-bender in history helped make me even richer than I already am.

Seems like she’s my uptight wreck of a good luck charm. She just doesn’t know it. She’s too weighed down with a son to take care of and a mountain of stress on her shoulders.

She has no idea how to have fun.

But I’m ready to teach her.

I figured I’d only be in Reckless Falls until the deal closes and then split. I never stay in the same place for too long.

But all that changes when Charlie decides to take a chance for once.

She has no idea how sexy she is.

Or how badly I want to taste her again and again.

But I’m going to show her.

I’m ready to play her game.

And Jameson Tellar always plays to win.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This steamy billionaire romance is set in the world of Reckless Falls but can be read as a complete standalone!

Excerpt:

Once inside, we stood in the entryway and I stared at the miles and miles of jangling slot machines with my mouth open. As Jameson said something to the front desk people, I watched as people just poured money into the machines. Dollar bill after dollar bill after twenty-dollar bill. I could pay my bills five times over with the amount of money that the people were pissing away.

It made my fists clench.

I turned, ready to tell Jameson that I didn’t want to do this after all, but when I looked at him I saw that his eyes were gleaming. “Wanna play?” he asked, taking my arm.

I swallowed. “I didn’t… I didn’t bring much cash,” I lied. I didn’t actually bring any at all. Didn’t have any at all.

“Here,” he said, reaching into his wallet and pulling out a twenty and pressed it into my hand.

I looked at where it lay in palm like I had never seen money before. “What do I do with it?” I asked.

“You know how to play cards?” he asked.

“Nope.” I shook my head. Embarrassment was starting to crawl in heated fingers across my cheeks. This was way out of my league. I had no clue, what was I thinking? This wasn’t my world. This wasn’t where I belonged. These weren’t my people. And Jameson, he was definitely on a different plane from me.

But I refused to be ashamed about it. “No,” I said, lifting my chin. “I don’t know how to play cards. I’m not a gambler.”

I expected him to be irritated, but Jameson just smiled. “Okay, then just stick it in the slot machines then,” he said. “It’s kind of hard to screw that up.”

I turned and walked over to the nearest one. “Just stick it in there?”

His eyes twinkled a little, and the corners of his mouth turned upward. “Yeah,” he said with a mischievous grin. “Just stick it in there.”

Suppressing a laugh at the middle school joke, I slid Jameson’s twenty-dollar bill into the slot machine. “Now what?”

He leaned over me. I could feel the way the heat was rising off his skin. The millimeter of space that separated us was electrically charged. “Well now, let’s see if you get lucky,” he said in that same low voice as before.

Writing Sexy Heroes

By Clare James

Thanks for having me today, Becky! I’m so excited to talk about what makes a sexy hero in a romance novel. In my new Brazen romance, PLAYED, my hero is a rugged cowboy, who also happens to be a country music god! Double-whammy!

Still as good as that is, it isn’t enough. It’s close, but I think there are five traits a romantic hero must have.

#1- He must be appealing to the eye.

Okay, we’ll start with the superficial. A romance hero doesn’t have to be physically perfect, but he must have something—the eyes, body, smile, edge—that the reader is going to find attractive. But for me, I happen to love when he also has some physical flaw. My cowboy is rough around the edges, and it’s up to my heroine to get him ready for primetime. The scenes where she tries to make him over are very funny and were a blast to write. And to me, it makes him even more endearing.

#2- The words!

This is my personal preference. I don’t think there is anything sexier than a smart man, so his dialog is very important. If he’s soft spoken, even better, because it puts even more importance on the moments when he does talk. And that is a ton of fun. If he can make a few of those choice words dirty? Well then we’re in business.

#3- Flaws!

If he doesn’t have a physical flaw, or even if he does, he needs to have some issues. And just being an asshole for the hell of it, is not good enough. I’m quite tired of those heroes, actually. I want a real life flaw, something that impacts his decisions and allows him to grow through the story. That makes for an incredibly interesting character.

#4- Motivation.

What does the hero want?! When I’m reading a romance novel, that must be clear very early on. I have to know what makes him tick, and understand why he does the things he does, to become invested in the story.

#5

Chemistry with the heroine.

I want this by the truckload! And it doesn’t mean they have to spend the entire book in bed. Some of the sexiest, most enjoyable scenes to read can simply be full of sexual energy and chemistry that jumps off the page… without the sex. I know, that is hard to believe. Still, when they finally get to the bedroom (or wherever) it makes the moment that much sweeter!

What about you? What do you need in a hero?

Two words: Aaron Major 😉

Play. Or be played.

The music should be enough. End of story. But Aaron Major is finding out it’s not, and now his agent has hired a firm of suits to help launch his debut album, turning his life into a goddamn circus. Smile here. Play there. Be nice. Well, screw that. If Aaron wanted to spend his time shaking hands and kissing babies, he would’ve gone into politics.

Helping launch the career of country singer Aaron Major should be a cakewalk for PR pro Melody Sharp. Aaron is charming, sexy, and oh-so-appealing when he’s on stage. Off stage, though, he’s her worst nightmare. A stubborn, ornery, reclusive nightmare without a lick of business-or fashion-sense. The only way he’s going to make it in music is with a serious makeover-and quite possibly a personality transplant.

Soon, they’re engaged in a game of give and take, and though it’s Melody calling the shots, it’s Aaron who holds all control…

Review:

Yay–Mel’s story!

Her best friend’s left town (Viv from Caught), work is no longer inspiring her–in fact, she’s been demoted in a big way–and now she’s getting emails from her ex. She’s behind on all her bills and it’s almost time for the biggest party of the year back home, which she has to attend and her ex will be at this year as well, so…yeah. Things have been better.

And then Aaron Majors moves into her building…

Aaron had a pretty miserable second half of a childhood and a really disastrous first chance at fame, but now he’s determined to make it back to be a better provider for his little brother, who’ll be starting college soon. Everything in his background tells him that the music industry and relationships don’t work. But his new roomie/PR person has something about her that’s hard to resist…

Fortunately for us 🙂

I loved Aaron and Mel together–they’re an adorable couple, not to mention they definitely know how to bring the steam, though somehow this book managed to come out on the sweet side overall. Their relationship black moment ending up being a fairly small blip on the radar and was fixed rather easily, so that might be part of it, though honestly I didn’t really want to see them stuck in a big, angsty scene. The ending comes fairly quickly–Aaron goes pretty fast from “no relationships” to “I love you” (and a little bit more) but since I really wanted them to get together anyway, it’s hard to find fault with that. 🙂

This one would work just fine as a standalone–Viv’s mentioned a few times, along with the reason why she’s moved away–but there’s nothing that happened in book one that you’ll need to have read to start Played.

Rating: 4 stars / B+
