Title: Hearts Beneath the Badge
Author: Karen Solomon
Publisher: Missing Niche Publishing
Pages: 247
Genre: Nonfiction
Format: Hardcover/Paperback/Kindle/Nook

About the Book:

Hearts Beneath the Badge is a unique compilation of interviews with officers across the country. It’s not about the crimes they witness or the judgment they face; it’s about them – Damien, Danny, Frances, Ken, Pamela, Brian, and more. Their thoughts, their fears, their proud moments and their heartbreak. It’s about the people we often don’t see because we are blinded by the uniform.

They are among the hundreds of thousands that are unseen each day, the men and women that go back for more no matter the personal cost. They provide meals, rides, lifesaving breaths and prosthetic legs. Yes, even prosthetic legs. There is much more to them than meets the eye-or the news camera. By reading this book, you will open yourself to a world of people you may have forgotten existed. You will see the names, families and some of the faces of the police officers that don’t make the news.

Hearts Beneath the Badge is a book about the good deeds officers perform. There is a pressing need for people to see more than just the officer’s hearts; they need to see their souls. Society as a whole needs to accept police officers for who they are – mere mortals. In order to do that, they must look through the layers of the officer’s lives and see the heartache and joy, the same heartaches and joy we all experience. Society also needs to know that, whether we want to admit it or not, there is a price to be paid for pursing the love of the law.

90% of all sales will be donated to National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, Safe Call Now, Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) and PoliceWives.

Don

I followed a trail of blood up the concrete steps as deja vu overtook my thoughts.

I’d been here before, just a few short months ago, doing the same exact thing, following a trail of blood to an open front door. On this night, just like then, there had been a call for shots fired, the sound coming from the street.

A trail of blood, an open door and no body to be found.

Again, just like last time, the person was taken to the hospital by a friend, so we waited to hear from the hospital when they made the mandatory call about somebody coming into the emergency room with bullets in their body.

As I was checking the house for another injured or dead person, I couldn’t help but notice that the house was exactly as it had been before. There was no furniture in the living room and there was trash all over the place. Paper plates with leftover food and cigarette butts littered the kitchen counter. The upstairs was where the televisions and furniture were kept. When you live in fear of drive-by shootings, upstairs is the safer place to spend most of your time.

As I was leaving the kitchen, my eyes were drawn to the floor by a cockroach scurrying over a button, the kind that you can pin to your shirt to announce things like, “I voted” or “I gave blood!” This button had a picture of Michael Brown on it and the words “Justice for Mike Brown” or some similar message around the photo.

There was something queer about the button being on this particular kitchen floor on this particular night, surrounded by roaches and drops of blood and dog shit.

I shook my head and left the house satisfied that nobody was dead or injured inside.

About the Author:Karen Solomon

Karen Solomon is interested in the feelings of law enforcement and whether or not they have someone that will listen to them, most of them do not. Most books on the market are written by the police officers themselves, in almost textbook fashion relating protocol and situations with the orderliness of a police report. Her books are different from every book out there because the officers bare themselves to her; many of the interviews end in tears because they have opened up something that is very difficult to close. Karen Solomon is a graduate of Eckerd College and blogs as The Missing Niche. Her writing has been featured on PoliceMag.com and To Write Love on Her Arms. She lives in New England with her husband, 2 children and 2 dogs. Proceeds of her latest book, Hearts Beneath the Badge, will be donated to law enforcement charities.

Review:

Okay, so I might be a teensy bit biased here.

It’s possible I saw the words “Suzanne Brockmann” and “Troubleshooters novella” and me loving this book was a forgone conclusion. Especially when a closer look revealed the words “M.L. Buchman” and “Night Stalkers”.

Yep. I was a goner.

Such a fantastic collection–most work fine as standalones, and serve as great intros the the authors’ series–and all to benefit a great cause! It’s possible I might have two copies–one in print and one in ebook. Maybe 😉

“Hot as Hell” (A Deep Six novella) by Julie Ann Walker–My first read by Ms. Walker, though I own several of her Black Knights, Inc. books. I don’t have any of her Deep Six books yet, but that is going to change–soon. “Hot as Hell” is the story of several intense (in more than one way!) hours inside the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan for the ambassador’s secretary and the SEAL who comes to her rescue. Including some darn memorable “hot as hell” moments in the embassy’s panic room…

A Navy SEAL who knows his figurative language (“But before he could respond to that ridiculous bit of alliterative nonsense–python he packed in his pants? Jesus–his cell phone came to life in his hand”) and a Star Wars reference (“Luke, I am your father”) ensure this isn’t going to be my last read in this series.

Rating: 4 stars / A-

“In Plain Sight” (An Elite Force novella) by Catherine Mann–Again, I’ve got several of Ms. Mann’s books. Again, I have yet to read any of them. Clearly I am not spending my time wisely…I’m adding this series to my TBR pronto as well.

Stacey and Gavin were childhood best friends and sweethearts, but were separated by time and circumstance. Things have changed so much for both of them in the meantime, and now Stacey’s life’s in danger. Can he save her–or will they possibly be able to save each other?

Rating: 4 stars / B+

“Torn” (A Protect and Serve novella) by Kate SeRine–a new-to-me author that is another new addition to the TBR list. A friends-to-lovers story (yay!)–Joe and Sadie have each carried a secret torch for the other for years, but neither wanted to risk their relationship by acting on it. But a brush with death has a way of clarifying things…

Rating: 4 stars / B

“War Games” (An Endgame Ops novella) by Lea Griffith–ends with a happy-for-now for the hero and heroine, but the novella itself serves as an intro to the author’s brand new series. The main problem the characters are dealing is nowhere close to any kind of resolution at the story’s conclusion. It’s an awesome set-up–it drew me right in from the first page–but we have to wait until January 2016 (!) for its continuation.

Sigh…

Rating: 4 stars / A-

“Beauty and the Marine” by Tina Wainscott is a fun twist on the Beauty and the Beast story–with a fake reality show (complete with models competing to be the best redneck chick) slash real undercover op.

Sadly, it’s missing the awesome library from the Disney version (my favorite part, obviously) but it’s still a sweet story. My favorite line? “Griff, I don’t want a guy who looks good. I want a guy who is good.”

Happy sigh.

But I will never go handfishing.

Rating: 4 stars / B+

“NSDQ” (A Night Stalkers novella) by M.L. Buchman–I am shamefully behind in this series, a shortcoming I intend to fix when the semester’s over. “NSDQ” (Night Stalkers Don’t Quit) definitely gives you a taste of the series, but since the main characters aren’t active members of the Night Stalkers team for the bulk of the story, it’s a great place to whet your appetite.

I absolutely loved that the heroine’s name is Lois Lang (nickname “Superwoman” and later and even better, “woman of steel”) and the hero is Clark–Kendall Clark, anyway. (AKA “Superboy”, of course.) Just too perfect–and a great story to boot.

Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A

“SEALed with Passion” by Anne Elizabeth–really the only story of the whole bunch that didn’t work for me. The idea behind it is solid–it even incorporates the Wounded Warrior Project, which was a nice touch–but the execution was lacking. Stilted conversation, both internal and external, characters who acted like they were in junior high, and not a whole heck of a lot of believable chemistry between the hero and heroine made this one just a meh read.

Rating: 2 1/2 stars / D+

“Home Fire Inferno (Burn, Baby Burn!)” (A Troubleshooters novella)–I would have bought the book for this story alone. Heck, I think I would have bought two copies for this story alone…

I loved the glimpse into life between the novels that this story offered. An amazing number of the Troubleshooters characters manage to show up in this one, for a totally worthy cause–and it was so much fun to read. If you’ve read the other books in the series, you’ll love this one. If you haven’t, you won’t quite understand all the dynamics between the characters, but it will still give you a definite flavor for the series as a whole.

One of my favorite lines, courtesy of Izzy Zanella, thinking about how to deal with pregnant women–“It was essential, always, to have salt-free soda crackers at hand. And the sympathetic words,I know you feel exhausted/nauseous/awful/homicidal. I’m so sorry, baby. How can I help? were also good to keep near the tip of one’s baby-making tongue.”

True dat.

Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A

Way of the Warrior Homecoming Tour!

Suzanne Brockmann on “Home Fire Inferno”

I write about a SEAL team, so my military heroes tend to show up in a rather large group! And although Home Fire Inferno focuses on Navy SEAL Dan Gillman (whose wife, Jenn, is about to have a baby!), you’ll also see quite a bit of Izzy Zanella, along with Mark Jenkins, Jay Lopez, and the inimitable Senior Chief Stan Wolchonok. Readers will also get to meet the SEAL with the face of a serial killer and the intriguing nickname HoboMofo . . . who happens to live with his mother and his ten-year-old daughter. But all the SEALs in this story would be in full agreement that family is the one word answer to the question “What is your military hero/ine most excited about returning to after active duty?”

Honoring love and family is a long-held tradition in the U.S. Navy. A ritual called the First Kiss is still practiced for ships returning to their homeports. (Google “US Navy first kiss tradition” to see pictures that will brighten your day!) All married sailors, officer and enlisted alike, can take part in a lottery in which the winner is the first to disembark, greet, and kiss his or her spouse after many months away from home. It’s a huge deal, with boatloads of ceremony involved. This is the big, bad U.S. Navy, part of the most powerful military force in the world. But everyone—from admirals to seamen recruits—unabashedly recognize that the most important part of their homecoming lies in the arms of the men and women waiting for them.

Julie Ann Walker on “Hot As Hell”

Despite running missions to the ass ends of the earth, Navy SEAL Michael “Mad Dog” Wainwright from Hot as Hell is a family man at heart.  Born and raised in Atlantic City, he longs for the sea when he’s conducting sorties in the desert.  Hankers for the boardwalk when he’s belly deep in some bog in the jungle.  And craves a slice of Tony Bologney’s pizza when he’d eaten one-too-many MREs – meals ready to eat – to count.  So when Michael gets time off from missiles and mayhem, you can bet your bottom dollar he races home to be with his two brothers and his mother and father. Together, they make a night of pizza, walks along the boardwalk, salt water taffy, and some tossing of the dice at one of Atlantic City’s seaside casinos.  It’s a bit of normalcy in a life that’s otherwise filled by the extraordinary.  A bit of fun in a world Michael knows can be full of horror and woe.  A bit of life to go along with so much death.  Michael “Mad Dog” Wainwright lives for those moments, for those homecomings.  They’re what he fights for…

Catherine Mann on “In Plain Sight”

Tech Sergeant Gavin “Bubbles” Novak isn’t known for a sparkling wit, but his steely eyed focus on the job has made him the go-to guy in the most stressful of pararescue missions. Until a fateful military mission leaves him blind and ends his Air Force career. With nowhere else to go, he returns to his small Kentucky hometown with his seeing-eye dog and takes a job as a 9-1-1 operator. His first day on the job brings a voice from the past, the only woman who has ever blasted through that tough shell to reach his soul – his high school sweetheart Stacie Curry. She’s being stalked by her abusive ex-husband and he’s broken into her home.

Stacie Curry thought she made the safe choice in marrying the hometown boy rather than leaving with brooding outsider Gavin. But her decision has led to a nightmare existence. Since her divorce, she is stalked and terrorized by her ex. When she calls 9-1-1, she’s stunned to hear Gavin’s deep voice on the other end of the line. And when she sees him face to face afterward, she’s shocked – and heartbroken – to learn he’s blind. But she soon finds Gavin will let nothing stand in the way of protecting her.

Learning to overcome the loss of his sight and his Air Force career, Gavin comes to her rescue, protecting her, helping expose her ex … and rekindling their old romance with a blazing-hot flame.

Tina Wainscott on “Beauty and the Marine”

Once the gorgeous golden boy of his small Georgia town, Marine Griff Tate returned home scarred from an explosion in Afghanistan. Now, the only people he sees are his family and the out-of-towners he takes hunting and fishing on their private acreage. Griff thinks that all he wants is to be with his family in the comfort of the woods in which he spent his youth.  He can barely look at himself in the mirror—how can he expect a woman to want to wake up to his ugly mug every morning?  But even a battle-scarred veteran needs love … even if he doesn’t know it!

Anne Elizabeth on “SEALed with Passion”

Navy SEAL LT Cmdr Jonah Melo has his feet back on American soil. That’s when the itchy-need begins–to get back into the action and/or to fill his time with something useful. Luckily, he’s got an opportunity to jump in and do a building project for the Wounded Warriors. This particular house is special because it’s going to be the home of his long-time friend Kevin Toms. Melo has participated in a lot of builds before, but seeing his buddy in a home that enables his happiness and mobility is going to top the list of experiences. If only he could be as blessed in love as he is in friendship.

M.L. Buchman on “NSDQ”

U.S. Army Captain Lois Lang knows only one thing, flying combat search-and-rescue helicopters into the heart of the battlezone and getting her people back out. And when a CSAR mission gone wrong forces her to make the ultimate sacrifice—for her it isn’t a choice. Her crew and the wounded they’ve recovered always come first.

But the battle that awaits her will test her limits. She can learn to walk again, but she must discover the strength to face what to do when she can’t fly.

Kate SeRine on “Torn”

During his deployment, the thing that kept Joe Dawson going was the thought of returning home to Sadie—his best friend since childhood and the woman he’s been in love with for as long as he can remember. But a mission gone wrong has left him scarred—both inside and out. And when he and Sadie finally share an unexpected moment of passion, Joe has a hard time believing that Sadie could have feelings for the damaged man he has become and worries that her heart is being ruled by pity and not love.

Those doubts are compounded now that he’s set to resume his duty as a deputy sheriff. With his father and three brothers already making names for themselves with successful law enforcement careers, the pressure’s on, leaving Joe torn between honoring the family tradition and leaving behind the only career he’s ever known outside the military.

Lea Griffith on her inspiration for “War Games”

There are many things I could tell you about my stepfather. He married a wonderful woman with a tiny, 6 year old girl from a previous marriage who still wondered why her daddy couldn’t be a daddy—and then he became a stepfather and helped raise her. A strict disciplinarian he nevertheless was giving to a fault. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. (Side note: he refused to call it a “conflict”. He always said, “When people kill people like we killed people that’s a goddamn war.” Finally, I guess I’d tell you he was one of the most tortured souls I have ever known. In the midst of his torment, the nightmares and flashbacks, the anger that always simmered just below the surface there was a strength to be admired and it is that strength that makes him one of my heroes.

My stepdad was born and raised in a little town called Tennille, Georgia. It’s nothing but country with field after field of corn and cotton and country folk living a simple life. When young men came of age they either went into the family business of cotton and corn or they went into the service and this is the route William Thomas Howell, Jr. took. He entered the Air Force and lost any innocence he might have once had running tactical rescue and recovery missions in Vietnam of which he would say nothing about. I remember asking him what war was like and he refused to answer. Then one day when he was talking about Vietnam—not the war, mind you, but the country itself—I asked him what he missed the most about home when he was “in country”. He smiled and for some reason my gut clenched and I remember wishing I hadn’t asked the question. But then he answered and I had to smile with him. “Lightning bugs,” he said. “Lightning bugs and Coca Cola.”

My stepdad passed away almost nine years ago. He has missed the births of several of his grandchildren and the marriage of one of his children. But in the midst of his loss, he left a legacy that includes perseverance, giving and most of all a love of Coca Cola.

Oh, and the lightning bugs. I cannot forget the tiny bugs with the “lights in their butts”. It seems the smallest bug made a light big enough for my stepdad to yearn for. They make me smile every time spring comes. And yes, because he made me smile with his longing for lightning bugs I taught my girls how to catch them and put them in a mason jar for a little while before you release them. This more than anything else has helped me remember him.

Review:

Most of the authors of the Night Shift novellas were new to me, and the book served as a great introduction. The fact that the entire book’s proceeds are going to charity made the entire package twice as appealing; even though I got a review copy, I still went out and bought my own just because 🙂

“Off Duty” is a sweet story about second-chances–second chances in romance, and second chances for a family. I loved this story from start to finish. If you haven’t read Sawyer Bennet before, it’s a great introduction. This novella is part of her Off series, but works well as a standalone. 4 stars/A-

“Rebound” was my first story by Chelle Bliss. I liked its construction–it begins at the end, and then takes the reader back to the beginning to see how Flash and Fiona first meet. It’s a fun and sexy tour of both New Orleans and the road back from heartbreak. 4 stars/B+

“Wanting to Forget” was a little more problematic–it’s not really a romance; it’s one man’s destructive path toward getting a woman he believes he can’t have out of his head. It’s really hard to like Jordie here. Really hard. Since it’s a prequel to his full-length novel ( Overtime ), there’s hope for his redemption. I’m willing to give him a chance to turn things around, but at the end of this novella I don’t know if I would if I were Kasey. Jordie has a serious amount of work ahead of him. Hopefully there will be groveling. And a major attitude adjustment… 3 stars/ C

“Closet Confessions” was my first Kindle Alexander story. I really liked both Derek (“Dr. Baby”–adorable!) and Justin, and was rooting for them from the beginning. Ms. Alexander added a clever twist in her story that made it even more enjoyable. 4 stars/B+

Brenda Rothert’s “Healing Touch” was another first read for me. I loved the romance between Joss and Carson–it was steamy but full of laugh-out-loud moments, not to mention an awesome use of a Magic 8 ball. The Magic 8 ball really does know all! I’ll definitely be reading more from this author. 4 stars/A-

Eden Butler’s “Swimming in Shadows”, like Toni Aleo’s story, wasn’t really a romance, though the potential is definitely there. Also like the earlier story, this is a prequel for a longer work,Shadows and Lies , the first in a new series. Fortunately, though, Ryan’s a much more sympathetic character than Jordie, even though he too is in a pretty dark place. He’s an Avengers fan, which puts me firmly in his corner. 😉 4 stars/A-

Overall rating: 4 stars / B+

New Release Review and Giveaway: WITHIN THESE WALLS by J.L. Berg

Wow. Just…wow. Definitely recommend!

Within These Walls
by J.L. Berg

Review:

Prologue

Within these walls, he became my solace, my sanctuary, and my strength.

Like a white knight, he saved me from a life of gray and showed me a world full of color.

Within these walls, I gave myself to a man who said he would always fight for me and love me until the end of time.

But sometimes, not even love was enough when life got in the way.

When your heart was already damaged beyond repair, what was left to break?

Within these walls, I gave my less than perfect heart to the man I loved.

And then… he walked away.

So I read the blurb, thought, sure, I’ll give it a try…it’s probably going to go overboard on the angst, though…

Oh. My. Gosh. I loved this book. Jude and Lailah’s romance is just so sweet. And intense. And filled with chocolate pudding (I loved those scenes, but I kept thinking, those can’t possibly be on her diet! It was a total, “Ha! I knew it!” moment when her mother Molly made the same observation.) Their romance was wonderful…except when it wasn’t.

From the very first page, you know it’s going to go wrong–it’s a romance, after all, you’ve gotta have the black moment; plus, the prologue actually tells you so–but honestly, it’s all so wonderful for about two-thirds of the book watching them come together that it’s hard to imagine. I looked back at that first page at least a half a dozen times, thinking no, he can’t possibly leave her! He wouldn’t! He couldn’t! and knowing it was coming kept me turning the pages like an obsessed person.

Good thing I didn’t have anything pressing to do today. I would have been no good for it. All my attention was on Lailah and Jude.

Lailah’s problem is explained in the blurb–she has a defective heart, and has spent more time in the hospital than at her own home. She gets some emotional relief from journaling, but essentially her life is a lonely one within a very small, contained sphere. She’s started a list in one of her composition books–a “Someday” list of all the things she’d like to do…someday. She doesn’t really have a ton of hope that she’ll even get to do half of them, though–not without a miracle. For the most part, those items are so commonplace that they’re heartbreaking.

5. Stand in line for something.
23. Go grocery shopping.
30. Go to the library.
41. Buy my mom a birthday present.
91. Make a sandcastle.
106. Burn an entire batch of cookies.
129. See a waterfall.

The blurb only hints at the fact that Jude too has some major baggage to deal with. He once was on top of the world (or was he? There’s some serious layers there) and lost it almost overnight. He’s been stuck in a loop of pain and sorrow ever since, removed from the world and virtually all human interaction. Lailah saves him just as much as he saves her.

She gets to cross off #131 🙂

And it’s so good. Did I mention that already? 😉

I will definitely be reading more from J.L. Berg!
