Excerpt:

The first thing she noticed was that yesterday’s sad vulnerability was gone. Now his ice-blue eyes were flinty and determined as he strode inside. She remained by the door, hand on the knob, ready to show him the way out. Yet she sensed that sending him away wasn’t going to be so easy this time.

“You’re too late,” he said.

“I beg your pardon?”

“Fifteen years ago some New Zealander became first woman to winter-over solo. Maybe you already know that. Or maybe you don’t care, because we both know that’s not the real reason you’re holed up in here.”

She winced. He knew she wasn’t being honest, but not to what extent. Burdened by guilt and too deflated for battle, she sighed and leaned against the door. “You’re right it isn’t.”

“Nora..,” the gentleness in his voice felt like a caress. “Staying here alone doesn’t hurt Herbert Quinn, it only hurts you. And it hurts me too.”

“How’s that?”

“Because to keep you secret, I have to lie, not just to IFAR, but to the people who work for me.  People whose trust I don’t take lightly.  Staying up here not only puts you in danger, but also them. This what your brilliant boss forgot. Down here, people survive because they depend on each other. If one of the systems failed in bad weather, or you had an accident, computers and Vancouver would be useless. Someone would have to put themselves at risk, and come to help.”

Most likely, that someone would be him. Even with blizz lines strung, making such a trip could be life-threatening. Fear tightened her throat as she considered how it would feel to mourn another man she cared about.

“I know you’ve lost much,” he said. “And while I know losing a fiancé is different, I understand the hurt of missing a person I loved dearly.”

“That woman who lied to you?” she demanded, shocked and angry.

“No,” he said. “Not Natalia. I’m talking about my mother.  For a long time, I felt like she was the only person who understood me. But when I came here to Antarctica, I found others like me and a place to belong. In time, the pain was not so bad. Up here all alone, you don’t have that.”

“No,” she whispered.

“Ask yourself if this is what he’d want for you. I don’t think it is. I know that if I was gone… and the woman I loved was left behind, this isn’t what I’d want for her.”

Her fingers twitched on the doorknob, and she thought of ordering him out, but didn’t. In her heart, she knew he was right. Even if she weren’t drifting through darkened rooms in a ruined wedding gown, she was teetering dangerously close to Miss Havisham territory. In the process, she was putting others in danger.  The weather was turning, and soon the months of darkness would come.  It was time to decide where she would spend them.

Review:

A short and sweet novella about starting over complicated by a mistaken identity, Heating It Up was an entertaining read. Alexei and Nora are sympathetic characters, and though I think this story could definitely have been expanded into a longer book that would have allowed us to get to know them even better, it was still easy to root for them to both get together and resolve their work problems. I did miss the ice skating theme (Alexei is the brother of another series character, though) but found the setting of Antarctica to be a fascinating one. Reading this novella has almost made me want to visit the continent.

Almost. Ask me again if we have another record-setting summer like the last one… 😉

And there’s only one person who can help him: Her.

On Russia’s unyielding ice, Misha must reclaim what he’s lost while facing off against a talented young rival and risking further injury. But Amy soon discovers Misha’s much bigger challenges lurk off the ice. And she’s determined to keep Misha whole and healthy, even if doing so ends his shot at the gold.

Review:

I admit it, I’m a total sucker for figure skating stories. (Am I the only one who hears “figure skating” and then has the words “finger painting?” immediately echo in her head? Every time?

No? It’s just me, then? 😉

I might love that movie just a teensy bit too much–if that’s even possible)

Anyway, I was really looking forward to reading Getting It Back by Elizabeth Harmon. A series about figure skaters? Bring it on! Especially one that’s called “Red Hot Russians”–I am so there 🙂

I am happy to report that I really enjoyed this book (and have already added books 1 and 2 in the series–Pairing Off and Turning It On to my TBR, of course). Misha and Amy make a great couple–the figure skater and the athletic trainer–and it’s easy to root for them to make good with their “second chance” romance from the very beginning. I loved that their adventure took them from a dingy motel room in nowhere, USA to Moscow to a smaller Russian town–so cool!

Toward the end of the novel, some of the elements got to be a bit heavy-handed: the reason for their relationship “black moment”, for example, seemed a bit forced (a conversation probably could have fixed things in a millisecond; Amy’s overreaction felt unnecessary)–but overall I liked the path that their relationship took. Plus, the ending is absolutely adorable, so it’s easy to forgive much that happened before.

The “Red Hot Russians” from the first two books show up in this one–one has a fairly active role for part of the story, the other is mentioned several times–but even so, this one worked okay as a standalone. Fingers crossed that Ms. Harmon is going to bring us more in this series–in the meantime, though, I’ve got books 1 and 2 to look forward to 🙂

About GETTING IT BACK:

An unexpected phone call from the man who broke her heart offers Amy Shepherd an opportunity to return to the work she loves, training elite figure skaters. Except it’s just one figure skater: Him. Can she finally forgive and forget?

Figure skater Mikhail “Misha” Zaikov once had it all: medals, money and the adoration of millions. But a devastating injury put an end to his career and his romance, leaving him with nothing but regret over what could have been. His last chance to re-join the world’s top skaters is now.

Excerpt:

The day Misha arrived at the University of Delaware’s training center for the first time, the pretty red-haired student caught his eye.

She’d worn a fitted blue t-shirt and khaki shorts that displayed shapely legs, still with a trace of a summer tan. Her hair was in a single braid, worn off to the side. Pert breasts. Nice ass. Everything a guy could want, but it wasn’t just her looks that grabbed his attention. It was also the way she carried herself, moving through the room with calm assurance that seemed to fill more space than she actually did. Watching her efficiently coach a surly wrestler through his floor stretches left him with no doubt in her ability. At the end of his first day, he’d asked the professional trainer in charge of his rehabilitation to assign her to work with him, and when she’d greeted him in Russian at their first session, he’d been beyond impressed. Her stilted grammar and atrocious accent made it obvious she wasn’t a native speaker, but to hear someone speak his language, even badly, had meant the world to him.

“Why did you decide to learn Russian? I thought most Americans learned Spanish or French,” he’d asked, as he lay face down on the training table, turning his head so he could look at her.

Her face brightened with a pretty smile. “I took French in high school. But since I want to specialize in athletic training for figure skaters, studying Russian in college seemed more practical.”

“An excellent idea,” he said, liking Amy Shepherd’s common sense almost as much as he liked her looks. Not only did he want her working on his case, he wanted to know her on a deeper level. Everything in his life felt so unsure, he hoped a bit of her unflappable, steady confidence would rub off on him.

He wanted it then, he wanted it now.

That had been behind his crazy, pain-addled decision to text her two nights ago. He hadn’t known what he expected. Medical advice, punctuated by emoticons? Any response kinder than ‘fuck off,’ was welcome, though that had never been Amy’s style. All he knew was that he was hurting in pretty much every way it was possible to hurt, and it compelled him to reach out to the only woman who’d ever made him feel whole. The fact she’d responded by coming to be at his side, especially from so many miles away, only served as further proof of what a fool he’d been to leave her.
