NaNoWriMo, Why Do You Hate Me So? (Week in Review: 11-15-13)

Oh, NaNoWriMo, you always seem like such a good idea at the time… Two years ago, I was happily plugging away at my NaNo novel when–my laptop died. Just died. On Thanksgiving, With a whole lot of tears, prayers, and desperate promises to whomever was listening, I managed to get it to boot up one last time so I could get my project off of it (yes, I know, always back up your work, and I do. Just not as often as I should, obviously) and then woke up at 4 AM on Black Friday to camp out at our…

Week in Review: What I’m Reading (Writing. I mean WRITING. 11-9-13)

It’s November 9, so all the WriMos out there know what that means, right? Time for the all-day writing marathon, online and locally! (I get emails from my local chapter, but have yet to actually attend any of their events. If you’re not as lame as I am, you can find your local liaison here and see if they have anything planned that you can join in on.) It’s also a big day for donations, so if you think the NaNoWriMo program is one that should be kept going, please consider a donation! You’ll get a cool halo on…

What I’m Reading: Week in Review (11-3-13)

My keyboard is on fire this first weekend of NaNoWriMo, I tell you! Okay, maybe not exactly on fire. Unless when you look to the left of this panel you see a really big number in my NaNo widget. Then you’ll know I had a really productive afternoon here. I can dream, right? I tried to get as much reading in as possible before November 1st hit, which explained why I spent most of day one figuring out how to use Aeon Timeline for the first time and remembering how to use Scrivener again. On the plus side, I found out…

What I’m Reading: A Week in Review as NaNoWriMo Approacheth…. (10-26-13)

Mini Moe #2 and I are headed over the border today–to the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake to see Our Betters by W. Somerset Maugham. It’s kind of last minute–a friend had extra tickets. Their website says it’s similar to Downton Abbey, which we’ve both watched and liked…well, MM#2 liked it until she saw the season finale last year. Since then she’s been a little bitter; hopefully nothing like that will happen this afternoon. It’s recommended for ages 14 and up–fingers crossed that I won’t have to spend too much time covering her eyes. NaNoWriMo begins this Friday! Don’t worry–still plenty of time to…

What I’m Reading: Week in Review (8/31/13)

Oh, I am soooo in denial that tomorrow is September first. Actually, it’s in an hour and a half, but I’m still going to label it tomorrow because that makes me feel better. See? Not just a river in Egypt. It’s all in my head, and I’m fine with that. With the dreaded “S” word starting soon, I haven’t been able to read as much this week as I wanted to, darn it. I’m still working my way through Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading, and if I can finish it by the end of next week I’ll be…

Books on Sale: Happy Birthday, Kindle Daily Deal!

To celebrate the anniversary of their Kindle Daily Deal (which I use waaaay too often, especially thanks to that darn Whispersync for voice), Amazon has more than sixty-five of their past deals on sale again today. You can find them all here. Highights: The book that started it all: Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief for $2.99. I have students who read this over and over. Adventure, mythology, and (eventually!) a budding romance–what more can you want? Except maybe a movie that actually follows it. But I digress…. A mystery that I read earlier this summer on audio…
