Excerpt:

This was not what he had planned.

Maybe it was what he had fantasized about, but this was not what he had planned.

But the instant Darcy’s lips touched his, Ben was lost. From the first time he’d laid eyes on her, he’d wondered how she’d feel in his arms.

Now he knew. Amazing.

From the first time he watched her move, he wanted to know how she’d feel moving against him.

Now he knew. Incredible.

From the first time he’d seen her smile, he wanted to know what her lips would feel like as he kissed her.

Now he knew. Sexy as hell.

His arms banded around her waist until he made sure there wasn’t even room for a breath between them. She went up on tiptoes to press even more intimately against him—which he totally appreciated—and it allowed his hands to linger and cup her denim-clad bottom.

And what a denim-clad bottom it was.

Gently, he squeezed it and even considered grabbing it harder and lifting her onto the counter, but he wasn’t ready to let go of the full-body contact just yet.

It was insanity. One minute, she was frustrating the hell out of him in a nonsexual way, and the next, he was so consumed with need for her that he almost didn’t recognize himself. This wasn’t the man he normally was. He didn’t pounce; he didn’t even think of initiating anything physical in a situation that was so mundane.

And breakfast was pretty mundane.

When Ben chose to sleep with a woman, there was, well, there was a certain protocol to it for him. There were the required three dates. There was the kiss good night that would build in heat over the course of the dates, and then it was normally at her house. Never here. Never in his bed. His home was just that—his. It was his sanctuary, and he was possessive of it. But right now, all he wanted—almost more than his next breath—was to have Darcy in his bed.

Under him.

Over him.

Another growl escaped before he could stop it.

For a moment, he allowed his lips to leave hers, because he was desperate to taste her in other places. His mouth trailed along the delicate line of her jaw, her throat, and up to nip at her ear, a spot he quickly learned made her knees buckle and had her gasping.

Good to know.

But she wasn’t having any of it for long. With her hand firmly anchored in his hair, she let him know the instant she wanted to kiss him again, and he went willingly. Over and over, his mouth slanted over hers until he thought he’d simply consume her. Tongue tangled with tongue. Breath mingled with breath. Never had the act of kissing seemed so carnal. So indecent and so damn erotic.

And that’s when he knew standing at the kitchen sink was no longer cutting it. He needed her. Wanted her. And from the sounds she was making and the way she was moving against him, Darcy felt it too.

This time when he reached down and cupped her ass, he lifted her up onto the counter. Stepping in close until he was firmly pressed against the juncture of her thighs, he cursed their clothes. Cursed the fact that the nearest soft surface was so damn far away. And cursed the fact that she tugged at his hair as she pulled away from him.

“Ben, wait,” she panted.

Well, shit.

A little dazed, he forced himself to open his eyes and focus on her. Her lips were wet and red and a little swollen, and her skin was flushed.

So. Damn. Sexy.

Resting his forehead against hers, he took a minute to catch his breath.

Was he supposed to apologize? Step away and start shoveling? Hell if he knew, but he was going to stay quiet and let Darcy say whatever it was she was thinking. So he didn’t move, and once his breathing was back to normal, he almost felt as if he was holding it.

“What are we doing?” she asked quietly.

Was she serious? Those were some fairly obvious moves going on, on both their parts! How could she be questioning it? And on top of that, she was the one who had initiated it! Lifting his head, he looked at her.

“I thought we were kissing,” he said simply.

She blushed, and it was sexy as hell to see. His fingers twitched with the need to touch her cheeks and feel the heat there.

“I…I know, but…I guess I’m just a little confused as to where that all came from.”

She was confused? Because now he was a little beyond that himself. Taking a step away, he frowned. “Why don’t you tell me?” he began levelly. “Since you were the one who reached up and pulled me into the kiss in the first place.”

The blush was instantly replaced by a look of mild annoyance. Darcy jumped from the counter, placing her hands on her hips. “I guess I got caught up in what I thought was a moment. I mean you came over and crowded me into the cabinets and then started touching me—out of the blue, might I add—so I guess I thought you were into it too.”

Oh yeah. He had forgotten about that part. Once she had reached up and kissed him, Ben had pretty much forgotten about his own actions leading up to it. “Fine. Yes. I came over here and—” He stopped and cursed, raking a hand through his hair. “I don’t know. I wanted to do that since you first showed up here.”

New Release and Giveaway! ONE MORE KISS by Samantha Chase

MATT REED IS HIDING…

…from his fans

…from his past

…from a failure too painful to contemplate

Most of all, Matt is hiding from himself.

VIVIENNE FORRESTER IS A WOMAN WHO GIVES HER ALL…

…to her friends and family

…to her online food blog

…to the man she loves

Vivienne will try anything and everything to coax Matt out of his self-imposed exile. But for this to work, Matt is going to have to meet her halfway…

Excerpt:

Matt continued to silently stare at her.

“Please say something,” she prompted nervously, chewing on her bottom lip.

“I…I don’t know if I can do that.”

A nervous chuckle came out before she could stop it. “What – you mean you don’t know if you can say anything?”

He shook his head. “I don’t know if I can start over.”

Vivienne was completely confused. “Why not? I think it would be a good thing. For both of us.”

“I disagree,” he said, resting his elbows on the table so he could lean his cheek in the palm of his hand.

“I don’t understand why…”

“I kind of like where we are right now. I don’t want to pretend the past didn’t happen. I’m enjoying the banter we have and the way I find it so easy to talk to you. I think if we ignore that night – that kiss – then we’re both denying a part of who we are.”

Well damn. That was a pretty powerful declaration, she thought. “But…it wasn’t me that night,” she argued. “I honestly don’t know why I did any of it. This is who I am,” she said, patting herself on the chest. “I’m an introvert who likes things neat and orderly. I hate chaos, and I plan out everything. I hate leaving anything to chance, and I rarely take risks. I like my world to be predictable and organized. I make lists, and I like to check things off. The person you’re remembering, doesn’t really exist.”

“Again, I disagree.”

“Ugh,” she groaned and stood to clear the table. “Do you deliberately go out of your way to make things difficult all the damn time?”

Matt stood and helped her with the dishes. “Viv, I’m not trying to make anything difficult. If anything, I’m simplifying things. You came to see me. We kissed. We didn’t see each other for a while. Now we’re both here and we kissed again.” He placed the dishes in the dishwasher before turning and looking at her again. “And – if we’re completely honest for the sake of keeping things simple – we’re both still attracted to one another.”

Great. She wanted to stamp her foot and tell him to leave, but she would only be proving his point. So now what?

“I…I don’t know what it is you want me to say to that,” she admitted. And if she wasn’t mistaken, he almost looked pleased.

“What I want is for you to tell me I’m not wrong. That this isn’t all completely one-sided.” Before she could answer, however, he started speaking again. “But I’ll understand if you’re not ready to yet. I can be patient, Vivienne, and I believe you’re worth waiting for.”

And then, in a move that took her totally by surprise, Matt leaned down and placed a whisper-soft kiss on her cheek before stepping back. “I know you have some shopping to do and errands to run. I’m going to go back over to Aaron’s and relax and maybe watch a little TV. When you’re ready to start working on dinner, let me know, and I’ll come over and help.”

All Vivienne could do was nod and watch him walk out the door.

 Title: Roommating
Series: Preston’s Mill #1
Authors: Noelle Adams & Samantha Chase
Genre: Contemporary Romance
 Release Date: September 7, 2016
 Blurb:
Forget all those other roommate romances you might have read.

Heather and Chris don’t hate each other…very much. And they don’t have sex all the time…at least not at first. Chris doesn’t go around shirtless, flexing his muscles and driving Heather wild…too often. And he doesn’t get jealous and possessive every time she goes out with another man…well, maybe occasionally.

But they definitely don’t fall in love…right away.

When Heather comes back to her hometown, she plans to take over her father’s historic restoration business and move into a beautiful converted apartment in Preston’s Mill. Then she finds out she’ll have to partner up with the one man she can never forgive. Chris Dole, who abandoned her father and betrayed her trust three years ago.

It gets even worse. They don’t just have to work together. They have to become roommates for six months to prove they can get along. That means Heather will have to play nice with Chris and put up with his obnoxiousness, his drop-dead sexiness, and his ugly recliner named Flo.

She’ll do what she has to do out of loyalty to her father, but she isn’t going to like it.

At least not much.

Excerpt:
“Heather?” The male voice was familiar, but it was also shocking, since it was coming from the doorway to the bathroom.

The doorway to the bathroom!

Her eyes shot open, and she squealed when she saw Chris looking in, Lucy dancing ecstatically at his feet.

“What are you doing?” she gasped, trying to hide under the water until she realized that there were no bubbles to hide beneath. She’d only put in some lavender and honey scented bath salts. “What are you doing here?”

Chris blinked, his gaze focused decidedly lower than it should be. “I live here.”

“But you’re not supposed to be here until after seven!” Her mind shifting quickly into crisis mode, she grabbed her towel, which she’d fortunately placed within arm’s reach, and lifted it to cover herself as she stood up.

“Was that a rule I missed?” His voice was dry and gruff, as usual, but he was decidedly distracted, his eyes raking over her bare dripping legs and the damp towel.

She scowled at him and gestured to her face. “Eyes up here.”

He managed to raise his eyes to meet hers. “You’re the one taking a bath with the door open.”

“That was for Lucy!” She was flustered and embarrassed and also just a little bit excited, although that last reaction was probably just a fluke.

“She likes to leer at you while you’re naked?”

“No! She likes to come in and out. You weren’t supposed to be home until after seven.”

“Why do you keep saying that?” He seemed amused now, although his eyes did occasionally drift back down to her body. “I didn’t realize you’d given me a schedule.”

“Dad said that you were working at the Harmon job until after seven.” She managed to say this more lucidly, since she realized squealing wasn’t the best way to express her quite reasonable assumption.

“The crew is working. But there was no reason for me to stay there the whole time.”

Typical of him to slack off before the job was done. He was always walking away when things got hard. She decided not to say so, though, since she was genuinely trying to get along with the man. “I didn’t know that.”

“I can see that.” He frowned as he glanced around at the flickering candles. “Why do you have all these candles lit and the music on? I thought you might have someone here with you.”

Naturally, his mind would go immediately to her getting it on with some guy in their apartment. She gave him a prim little frown. “There’s no one here with me. I thought, since you weren’t here, I’d have a little private time.”

“Oh.” Something changed on his face. “Oh.” The second time, he drawled out the word, stretching it out far longer than it should have been.

It took her a moment to realize what he was implying. When she did, she gasped and hugged the towel to her more closely. “Not like that!”

Did he actually think she was in here with the candles and music, having a little fun with herself?

“Ah. Too bad. That would have been something to walk in on.”

Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today, Samantha!

Thank you for having me here today, Becky!!

What 5 things should readers know about you?

Oh my goodness…where do I even begin??

  1. I am a voracious reader of contemporary romance and no, I never sway from that genre.
  2. 2. I am addicted to HGTV. Seriously, I could watch that channel 24/7.
  3. I don’t have an assistant so every time I comment on Facebook or respond to an email, you are seriously talking to me 🙂
  4. 4. If I could live anyplace, I would build a house in Disney World.
  5. 5. I spend 30 minutes every day just listening to my iPod to unwind – and normally to 80’s metal or Donna Summer!

Isn’t everyone addicted to HGTV? I’m pretty sure it’s a universal thing. 😉

Tell us all about your main characters—who are they? What makes them tick? Most importantly, what one thing would they need to have with them if stranded on a desert isle? 😉

Okay, so Zach Montgomery is technically our 7th Montgomery in the series. He’s an adrenaline junkie – or at least he was until his catastrophic fall during a mountain climb on Denali. For Zach, there’s always been a no-limits rule – in business and his personal life. He’s the oldest of his four siblings and an over-achiever. I imagine him to be a little like MacGyver – like he wouldn’t need anything on an island because he could make it himself! LOL!

Gabriella Martine is the epitome of efficiency. She’s beautiful and organized and keeps Zach’s world completely on track. For her, having self-control is a necessity. She’s had a pretty upsetting history with her family and how people perceive her so at this point in her life, she needs to maintain this persona of perfection. She’s been crushing on Zach for so long and she’s stayed working for him – even when he’s been a real jerk to her – because the thought of not seeing him every day is almost painful. As for the island thing , she’d probably need her iPad! And then we’d have to change Zach’s answer to he would need HER with him on the island to take care of him!

Perfect answers!

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

I really liked the idea of a wounded hero and knowing Zach’s propensity for being a dare-devil, he was the perfect character to work with. I enjoy writing a story where the couple really has to work for their happy ending and boy do these two! I remember reading a Sandra Brown book years ago where her hero was injured in a skiing accident and he was just brutal to be around and I thought that would be an interesting trope to work with.

I like it!

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I fell in love with writing in the third grade. Seriously. I hand-wrote my first romance in the ninth grade – and that was because a friend got me hooked on reading Harlequin Romances in middle school! After reading them, I knew that was what I wanted to do. But life has a way of getting in the way of things. It wasn’t until I was teaching creative writing to homeschooled high schoolers that I really got inspired to go back to my love of writing. They were all competing in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month – every November) and were self-publishing their books! I thought, if I’m going to sit here and encourage these kids to follow their dreams – which some already were! – then why aren’t I?? I am so grateful for the time I had with those students because they were all incredibly inspirational.

Yay, another NaNoWriMo success story! I do miss not doing NaNo with my students…good times! Crazy, but good 🙂

What do you like best about being a writer? What is the most challenging part?

I love being able to create these relationships and happily ever afters. I really do. And to be able to do it now full-time is just amazing! The most challenging part? Edits. I absolutely loathe the editing process. I think part of it is because once the story is done, my brain is already on the next book, the next couple, the next story. So to have to go back into a story that’s completed, is very hard for me.

I hear you! There’s times when I finish a draft of writing and I NEVER want to look at it again…and yeah, your brain does move on to the next project. Patience is not my strong suit!

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

Next year is going to be VERY busy! In February, Sourcebooks will be re-releasing my Life, Love & Babies trilogy in a 3-in-1 edition in paperback. I’m very excited about that! In March (or May), I have an indie book coming out which is more women’s fiction with romantic aspects – if that even makes sense! In April Love Walks In – Shaughnessy book 2 – comes out. In June, Sourcebooks will re-release Jordan’s Return. In July, Always My Girl – Shaughnessy book 3 – comes out. Then in October, Sourcebooks will re-release my Christmas novellas Mistletoe Between Friends and The Snowflake In as a 2-in-one paperback. In November I’ll be putting out an indie Christmas novella – untitled as of right now! And then in December Our Song – Shaughnessy book 4 – will come out. Whew! That’s a lot, right???

LOL, yes! That’s great, though—congrats!

What authors and/or books have inspired you?

Sandra Brown was a HUGE inspiration to me! Her romances – like “22 Indigo Place” – were always on my nightstand. Then I got into Nora Roberts and Susan Mallery.

I love Sandra Brown! I’ve mostly read her romantic suspense, though—I know, I know, I need to get busy…

What are you currently reading? What are your thoughts about it so far?

I am currently reading Melanie Shawn’s Hope Falls series. I love her to pieces!!! I’m reading book two in the series and I love the world she created and the friendship – there are four friends that kick off this series and each one gets their own book. It’s a fun, light read and the perfect escape!

Sounds great! (And darn it, my TBR grows again…)

If you had to “sell” this book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Sell “I’ll Be There”? In a single Tweet??? Oh…clearly you don’t know how BAD I am at Twitter! LOL!

A devastating accident. A disappointing recovery. A chance at redemption with the one woman he’s been pushing away

See? You did it—awesome job! 🙂 Thanks again, Samantha!

Reaching across the table, Zach took one of Gabriella’s hands in his and just marveled at how soft it was. He always wondered what her skin felt like and now that he knew, he wanted to feel more. “Don’t leave me. Please.”

Her blue eyes filled with tears and she used her free hand to quickly wipe them away before they fell and then studied their hands on the table. “Zach,” she said softly, “we’ve been over this.”

“I know, I know,” he replied just as softly. “I need another chance, Gabriella. I need a chance to make things right.” He looked up, his gaze meeting hers. “I need you.”

Deciding to be bold, he turned her hand over and twined their fingers together and gently squeezed. He was surprised she didn’t pull away and thought maybe—just maybe—they were making progress. “I know I can’t erase the things I’ve said and done, but if you’ll give me one more chance, Gabs, I promise not to screw up. If I do anything to upset you, you can walk away. Hell, you can slap me in the face, kick me in the shin or throw something heavy at me and I’ll take it. I just…I can’t do this without you.”

Her eyes never left their joined hands.

“I don’t want to do this without you,” he said quietly.

“I’m afraid to…believe you.” He barely heard her words, they were uttered so softly.

Everything inside of him clenched with pain. His always confident, ever-efficient assistant was now distrusting and uncertain—because of him. “I don’t know what to say to make you believe me. Tell me. Tell me what I need to do. Anything. Anything you need from me to gain your confidence, and I’ll do it.”

She looked up at him. “It’s not that easy. Every day I walked into the office, I gave you another chance. Every time you berated me or made me feel like I screwed up and I came back, I gave you another chance. From my standpoint, you’ve had two years’ worth of second chances. I think I’ve been more than generous.”

His other hand reached out to cup her hand in both of his. “I know you have and you have no idea how much I appreciated it.” She looked at him with disbelief. “It’s true! I know I never said it but every morning you were there, I was thankful. Every time you walked into my office, I was thankful. Please. I’m begging here, Gabs.”

“I guess I could come over.”

Her words were said so quickly that Zach thought he might have imagined them. “What did you say?”

“It…it was nothing. Never mind. I’ll just plan on seeing you tomorrow.”

“You said you could come over. Like now.”

“It’s late,” she said softly.

“Do you have a curfew?”

She giggled. “No.”

“That’s good. Neither do I.”

“But…it’s crazy, Zach. It’s not like we can get anything done tonight.”

He wasn’t so sure about that. “So? We’ll watch a movie or we’ll start our online research and making our plan for tomorrow.”

“I’m…I’m kind of in my jammies already.”

Was it too much to hope that it was scraps of silk and lace and she’d kept her stilettos on? “Me too.”

Now she laughed a little harder. “Oh really?”

“Yup. Really. Flannel pants, a t-shirt. Very jammie-ish.”

“I don’t even think that’s a word, Zach.”

“It doesn’t need to be. Come on. I’m not expecting you to come over in business attire, Gabs. I’ve seen you in jeans and dressed casually. It’s not a big deal.”

“I don’t normally drive around a whole lot at night.”

As much as he wanted to see her and spend time with her, he certainly wasn’t going to be selfish and endanger her by making her drive around late at night. If he was ready to drive on his own, he’d suggest going over to her place, but he hadn’t gotten the clearance from his doctor yet.

“It’s okay, Gabriella. We’ll leave things as we originally planned and I’ll see you tomorrow for lunch.” He sighed quietly and got comfortable on the couch. “I don’t want you driving around by yourself late at night.”

“You’re very sweet.”

He laughed darkly. “I bet it hurt to say that.”

“Oh, stop. We agreed we weren’t looking back, right?”

He nodded. “Right.” God he wanted to keep talking to her but he could hear it in her voice that she was tired. “Why don’t I let you go and get some sleep and I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Mmm,” she sighed. “I’m sorry. If it wasn’t quite so late…”

“It’s all right, Gabs. Really.”

“Okay. I don’t want you to be mad.”

“Not mad. Disappointed. I’m finding I really like spending time with you.”

“I like it too.”

She was killing him.

“Go,” he forced himself to say. “Goodnight, Gabriella.”

She made that purring sound again and everything in Zach hardened. “Goodnight, Zach.”

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan’s Return, in November 2011. Although she waited until she was in her 40’s to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.
When she’s not working on a new story, she spends her time reading contemporary romances, playing way too many games of Scrabble or Solitaire on Facebook and spending time with her husband of 25 years and their two sons in North Carolina.

I’m not the only one who loves quizzes, right? I mean the fun, not graded kind of course… 😉

MontgomeryBrothersSeries

Guest Post – Which Montgomery Brother Is Right For You? With Author Samantha Chase

With plenty of Montgomery Brother books on shelves now (and more coming your way soon) bestselling author Samantha Chase invites you to take this quiz to find out which Montgomery man is right for you.

What is your ideal hero’s idea of a perfect date?

  1. a)Wandering the aisles of IKEA – if you don’t break down and start yelling at each other, then you know it is meant to be!
  2. b)Locking yourself in your office to work. Who has time for fancy dates?!?!
  3. c)A pizza picnic at the local arboretum. Ten points to the one who can guess the most species of plants and flowers!
  4. d)Bungee jumping followed by a long, hot soak in a hot tub. The both can provide an adrenaline rush!

Which flavor of ice cream do you associate with your guy?

  1. a)Neapolitan because there are just so many different sides to this man.
  2. b)Coffee Mocha Fudge because he is strong and intense and can stay up…all night long.
  3. c)Rocky Road because loving him is a journey with ups and down, but definitely worth it!
  4. d)Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough because he is amazingly sweet and indulges your every whim.

Where would your perfect man take you on vacation?

  1. a)An isolated ski chalet, including a snow storm that would keep you two alone for days.
  2. b)New York City – plenty to do there, both business and pleasure.
  3. c)A super-private beach resort where you can feel like you’re the only ones there, complete with candlelit dinners and dancing in the moonlight.
  4. d)A nature walk in the woods, a pampering day at the spa, whale watching … it really doesn’t matter to him, as long as you can be together.

Your man’s best quality is:

  1. a)His nurturing nature. Once you get past his gruff exterior, there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for you.
  2. b)Rock solid work ethic.
  3. c) He knows who he is and doesn’t let anyone push him around.
  4. d)Deep down loyalty to everyone he cares about.

His best physical feature is:

  1. a)His devastatingly strong shoulders – he’s got the body of an athlete.
  2. b)His smile – wicked or sweet, one smile can melt your heart.
  3. c)His hands – he really knows how to use them!
  4. d)His kind, soulful eyes that see the real you.

A romantic gesture that he plans just for you is…

  1. a)Having the band play only slow songs so he can continue to dance with you in his arms.
  2. b)Buying you tickets to your very favorite sporting event.
  3. c)Planning a surprise engagement party!
  4. d)Sweeping you off your feet (literally!) to convince you that he loves you and wants you to stay – forever.

If you chose mostly ‘A’s, then Lucas Montgomery from Wait for Me is your soul mate. To the world, Lucas seems like a loner, but deep down he’s not. He cares fiercely about the people in his life and there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for them. He may come off as grouchy, but don’t let his growling get to you because this just hides his big heart. Lucas is not afraid to apologize and admit when he’s wrong and, in the end, he’ll do anything to prove how much he loves you.

If you chose mostly ‘B’s, then you will not be able to take your eyes off of the delicious Jason Montgomery from Trust in Me. Confident, level-headed, and seemingly all about business, Jason is a man of action. He likes to take control of almost any situation and prefers things to go his way. But all this aside, he’s considerate of those around him and pays close attention to details – a person’s likes and dislikes – and incorporates them into the relationship. Whether it’s business or pleasure, Jason is a man who takes notes and remembers exactly what it is that will mean the most to you.

If you chose mostly ‘C’s, then James Montgomery from Return to You is the hero of your dreams. James is a very hands-on type of man. He enjoys working with his hands and his love language is primarily all about the touching. He puts his heart and soul into everything he does – he loves deeply and hurts just as much. His pride and his need for privacy may get in the way at times, but the lucky woman in his life will know that she is everything to him because he loves so completely.

If you chose mostly ‘D’sMeant for You’s Ethan Reed will have you melting like butter. While he may not be a Montgomery, he has been in the family for years as a best friend and confidant. There is nothing boring about Ethan! The woman in his life had better enjoy a well-rounded lifestyle because Ethan offers it all – romance, adventure, passion. He knows his limitations and his sense of loyalty to the people that mean the most to him may have him hesitating in going after what it is that he truly wants, but in the end, he’ll make it worth the wait!

New Release and Giveaway! FOREVER BOUND by Noelle Adams and Samantha Chase (The Protectors #3)

 I MUST read this one!

 ForeverBoundBlitzBanner

Forever Bound
by Noelle Adams and Samantha Chase
(The Protectors, #3)
Publication date: November 4th 2014
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, New Adult
Synopsis:

I’ve been a lot of things in my life. Marine. Bodyguard. Security expert. Player. Heart-breaker. Occasionally an asshole.

Never a first-grade teacher. Until now.

It’s the most ridiculous undercover security job I’ve ever had to deal with. Corralling a bunch of six-year-olds while I try to do my job and keep anyone from knowing how clueless I really am.

I manage to fool everyone. Except her.

She’s an actual teacher, and she’s determined to find out what I’m really doing here. She doesn’t trust me, and her daughter doesn’t like me.

And the worst part is that I’m starting to like them. A lot.

So now, instead of being the tough guy, I’m stuck with rowdy children and Christmas pageants and falling in love.

It’s not the way I thought I’d spend Christmas.

Philosophy is difficult stuff!!!

Excerpt:

I was feeling pretty confident the next morning. I spent the entire night going over the notes that Eileen had left for me and basically learning the essentials of the first grade.

Not a good feeling for a guy who passed the first grade almost thirty years ago.

So there I was, walking down the hall, a little spring in my step, when I looked up and saw…her. Kristin was heading my way, and part of me wanted to do a quick sidestep into the nearest open doorway. Avoidance wasn’t usually my thing, but if Lily complained to her mother again…well, I didn’t need Kristin bringing me down. Not when I was feeling good about what I accomplished.

“Mr. Curtis,” she said with a sincere smile as she approached.

That instantly made me suspicious, but I forced myself to remain calm. “Ms. Andrews. How are you today?” I hated polite, social chit-chat.

“Fine. Thanks.” She eyed the stack of books and folders in my arms, and her smile seemed to grow. “It looks like you had a lot of homework last night.”

“You could say that,” I said evenly. We stood there in amicable silence for a minute and that was when it hit me. Kristin Andrews wasn’t “cute”—not like I thought yesterday. Looking at her now—with a little more a relaxed attitude—I noticed that she was really quite attractive. She had a girl-next-door thing going on that was kind of appealing.

“I hope the kids aren’t giving you too hard of a time. They tend to take advantage when there’s a substitute in the room.”

There was no condescension in her tone, and that made me relax even more. Maybe we had just gotten off on the wrong foot yesterday. She had a really great smile, and I felt myself being suddenly drawn to her. “I’ll admit that they’re a little tougher than I expected.” We both chuckled at that, and Kristin rested her hand on my arm.

And that one innocent gesture felt more intimate than anything I’d felt in a long time.

“Never underestimate a six year old. They can be bossy and opinionated and…” She sighed. “Great.”

“You’ve got a great daughter,” I heard myself say.

Kristin nodded. “Yes, I do.” Her eyes met mine, and it was all I could do to stop myself from leaning in and resting my forehead on hers right before I kissed her.

Wait. Kiss her? What?

Off in the distance, I could hear people starting to walk around the hallway. I cleared my throat and took a step back. What the hell was I thinking? I was here to do a job. I had a kid to protect and a group of kids who were expecting me to be teaching them…something. Anything.

I looked at Kristin and saw the same dazed expression on her face that I was sure was on mine.

Glad to see I wasn’t alone.

“I…I better go,” she said, suddenly seeming shy. And without another word, she walked away.

And damn if I didn’t stand there and watch the soft sway of her hips as she made her way down the hall.

Excerpt:

On my way out of the building with Maria, the friend who’d given me a ride, I glanced down at my phone, on the off-chance that Levi had tried to call back.

I’m not sure what he would have said if he called. After all, I couldn’t imagine him meekly saying he was sorry for his bad behavior.

I couldn’t imagine him being meek—in any circumstance, ever.

“Oh my God, that guy is hot,” Maria murmured excitedly, grabbing my arm as we walked down the four steps from the front entrance of the rec center.

This wasn’t unusual behavior for Maria. She found guys hot all the time and was never loath to share her feelings with me.

I glanced over with only half-hearted interest and immediately stiffened when my eyes landed on a tall, well-built man with dark hair and worn jeans, who was listening to something on his phone and leaning against a car in the parking lot.

My car. The one I thought was still in the shop.

Levi. Naturally.

“Oh my God,” Maria said, her hand still gripping my arm. “He’s smiling at you. Do you know him?”

“Yes, I know him,” I gritted out through my teeth. He was indeed smiling, but it wasn’t a friendly, welcoming smile.

It was a superior smile of amusement, as if he was laughing at me.

I’d seen that look on his face before. I’d seen it for years and years, when we’d been growing up and he was hanging out with Gavin. My brother used to get annoyed when I pestered them, but Levi had always just laughed.

Nothing had changed. I might be an adult, a professional, and completely his equal, but he was still laughing at me.

I took a shaky breath and tried to control the wave of anger.

“Is that your car?” Maria asked.

“Yeah. He must have gotten it from the shop.”

“Ooh! Why didn’t you tell me there was a guy in your life?” Maria looked like she might jump up and down with excitement over news of potential romance for me.

“He’s not in—“

“No, don’t try to hide it. I can tell by the way he’s looking at you that he’s crazy about you. Plus, he got your car for you! You go on over, but you better call me first thing tomorrow and tell me all about him.”

I groaned and tried to object again, but she skittered off before I could. Rolling my eyes, I made my way over to Levi, who was still half-smiling with that superior amusement that I hated.

“Did you just tell me to take my overbearing, obnoxious meddling and shove it up my arrogant ass?” he asked, lowering the phone from his ear.

For no reason—for absolutely no good reason—I felt the urge to snicker, partly at his expression and partly at the way he’d repeated my words back to me in that dry tone. Snickering would hardly be an appropriate response, though, so I gave him what I hoped was a cool look of disinterest. “You should check your messages more frequently. I left that over two hours ago.”

His smile broadened into a grin, making him so attractive that I lost my breath. Seriously. I literally lost my breath, gazing up at him and his warm expression and his gorgeous dark eyes.
