New Release Review! WICKED WISH by Sawyer Bennett (Wicked Horse Vegas #2)

Jorinda Pearce thought she did everything right – graduated from college, married her long-time sweetheart, established a career. But what does she have to show for it now? A degree she doesn’t use, a job she hates, and an ex-husband that broke her heart.

Looking for a long overdue adventure, Jorie takes a walk on the wild side and attends a masquerade event at The Wicked Horse Vegas. It’s exactly the escape she’s looking for, and even better, she can explore anonymously. Drawn to the man masked in black leather with the body of a god, Jorie finds the greatest pleasures of her life at the hands of a stranger.

Walsh Brooks is the most sought after man in The Wicked Horse. Sex is nothing but a game to him and he’s the type that will always leave at the end of the night without looking back. Unfortunately for Walsh, there’s no way he can walk away from the mysterious green-eyed beauty behind the mask of sapphire feathers, because he knows exactly who she is.

Jorie is his best friend’s little sister and there’s not another woman in the world that’s more off limits.

Excerpt:

Squaring my shoulders, I march into The Royale and head straight for the concierge desk. I haven’t been in this casino before. Hell, I haven’t been in hardly any of them. Sure, I’d only grown up about forty-five minutes away, but gambling and all-you-can-eat buffets held no interest to me.

From Micah bragging about his best friend over the years, I knew Walsh orchestrated the purchase of the land, then pulled together financing with two other partners to build this casino. It’s one of the most popular on the strip, boasting five-star dining, old-world elegance, and superior customer service. Again, all this from Micah, but honestly… I’m so proud of Walsh, too. We may have lost touch over the years, but I’ll never forget all the ways in which he acted as a big brother to me.

Ick.

Okay… that’s gross. Thinking of Walsh like a brother.

I scrub my mind clean of that thought and demand myself never to do that again.

Rather, I’ll never forget all the ways in which Walsh provided me friendship and support in my formative years.

Yes… much better.

“Can I help you?” a man behind the concierge desk asks with a genuine and friendly smile. Not snooty as I would expect in a fancy hotel, and I guess that goes to the superior customer service The Royale strives for.

“Yes… hi,” I say as I nervously tuck my hair behind my ears on both sides. “I need to see Mr. Brooks. How do I go about getting access to his apartment?”

Micah told me some time ago that Walsh lives here.

The concierge never loses his friendly smile, but a single eyebrow arches high at my temerity.

“Oh, gosh,” I stammer. “That came out stalkerish. Mr. Brooks… I mean, Walsh… and I are longtime friends. He used to babysit me.”

“Your name?” the man asks as he pulls up something on his computer.

“Jorie Pearce.”

After a moment of scanning, he looks up at me. “Your name isn’t on the approved list.”

“Well, he’s not exactly expecting me.”

“I’m sorry, Miss Pearce,” he says with true regret in his voice. “But our policy is strict. No one gets up to the private penthouse without their name on the list.”

I lean on the desk with one elbow and lower my voice. “Just out of curiosity… are there any women on that list?”

The eyebrow shoots up again.

“No, wait,” I say hastily as I hold my palms toward him in a silent plea to not process my last request either mentally or on the computer. “That’s totally stalkerish, and I didn’t mean that.”

“Miss Pearce,” the concierge says, now with a hint of annoyance. “Perhaps you’d like to leave a message? I can get it up to Mr. Brooks today and he can call you.”

“No, I need to see him now,” I tell him firmly. “And I swear it’s not to cook a rabbit in a pot on his stove. Can you please just call up to his apartment?”

“That’s not our policy—”

“Look,” I snap as I lean across the desk slightly. “I’m a lifelong friend of Walsh’s. My brother is his best friend. We lost touch for a few years, but we ran into each other last night. I really need to talk to him about something that happened last night, and I’m not leaving this hotel until you call up to his apartment.”

The eyebrow doesn’t arch but it does draw inward to meet its match on the other side as he considers what I just said.

“I swear to you,” and here I pause to look at his name tag, “Bentley. Please just call him. He won’t be mad.”

With a sigh, he relents and picks up the phone receiver, punching in a five-digit number. After a pause, he says, “Mr. Brooks… I’m very sorry to disturb you, sir, but there’s a Miss Jorie Pearce here to see you. She says she’s a longtime friend.”

I watch as Bentley listens, but I can’t gauge what’s being said as his face remains blank. Finally, he says, “Very good, sir.”

I take this to mean I’ll be getting an escort to the penthouse suite, but Bentley replaces the receiver and says, “I’m sorry, Miss Pearce. But Mr. Walsh told me to tell you he’s busy and can’t receive you right now.”

My eyes narrow at Bentley. “I don’t believe you. Call back and let me talk to him.”

“I assure you, I just talked to him and that’s what he said.”

“Call him back,” I order as I point to the phone.

“I can’t,” he says almost with a wail. “If I do, he’ll fire me.”

Okay, that hits home. I don’t want to get anyone in trouble, so I say, “Fine. Give me just a moment.”

I take a few steps away from the concierge desk and pull my iPhone out. I shoot off a quick text to Micah. What’s Walsh’s phone number?

I wait a few moments, but I know Micah is awake in San Francisco at this hour. His phone is always on, and he never ignores a text from me.

He responds with the number before I can even start to tap my foot with impatience, adding on, Why?

I hate the lie, but I write back, Came to Vegas for the day. Thought I’d see if he could meet up for lunch. Haven’t seen him in years.

Cool, he writes back. Tell him I said, “what’s up, douche?”

I roll my eyes as I text back, Real mature. Love ya. Later.

After I save the number to my contacts, I open a new text to Walsh. Let me up to see you or I’m going straight back to The Wicked Horse to satisfy some further curiosities I have.

I hit send and then walk back to the concierge desk. I merely lean one elbow on it and watch Bentley with a silent smile. The phone rings about ten seconds after that.

Bentley’s eyes fly to mine as he listens, and then says, “Yes, sir. Right away.”

When he replaces the receiver, he says, “I’m to show you to the penthouse elevator.”

“Thank you, Bentley,” I say brightly.

Review:

Whoa. Just…whoa.

Wicked Wish was truly something else: off-the-charts hot with a good helping of the forbidden (as Jorie’s brother’s best friend, Walsh had already been warned away at least once in the past)–their chemistry plus some very interestingnew equipment at the Wicked Horse Vegas made for some almost-too-hot-for-August reading. Even while you knew Micah (the brother/BFF) was going to find out and it was going to be horrible, it was impossible not to want the two of them together since not only were they fantastic together that way, they truly cared for each other on a whole other level that made it clear they were MFEO.

I was a bit bothered by the fact that Jorie’s marriage wasn’t quite as over as I originally thought it was…a fact that comes into play at about 80%…but ultimately that too was handled well so I tried not to dwell on it too much. In the end things turn out very, very well; and now all we have to do is wait for book #3 to come out 😉

Review:

Loved!

Whether we were glimpsing the Eden and Coop of 14 years earlier, seeing their feud at the beginning of the present portion of the book, or enjoying their “friendship” and “rebound sex” later on (ha! as if it was ever just either of those things), Eden and Coop are absolutely magic together. There wasn’t a single time when I would have entertained the possibility of them not having an HEA, no matter where their lives and careers wanted to take them.

Though I know this series (Love Hurts) is a series of standalone books, I absolutely would not complain if we went back for a second visit to Newberry–Missy could use an HEA, after all (sure, she was with a hot fireman when her lousy ex returned that one time, but no mention of him was made other than that, so…) and I’d really, really, REALLY like to see someone give Ashley a much deserved b!tch slap.

Just sayin’.

Excerpt:

She pops her head in first and gives me a tentative smile. “You busy?”

“Not at all,” I tell her as I wave her in.

She disappears for a moment, and then opens the door wider. I see she’s carrying a large, plastic container that’s dome shaped and has a handle on top. My eyes only flick to it briefly before coming back to her. She’s much better to look at.

Shutting the door behind her, she walks up to my desk with a goofy grin on her face and sets the plastic container in front of me. I look down at it, and then up to her. “What’s that?”

“Something I made for you this morning,” she says, unlocking the tabs at the bottom. She lifts the dome top off, and I’m staring at a cake in front of me.

Slowly, I look back up to her. “You made me a cake?”

“Not just any cake,” she says while wagging a finger at me. “A four-layer, homemade red velvet cake with whipped mascarpone icing.”

“Jesus,” I mutter as I look at the cake, wondering what this weird squeezing sensation is in my chest. When I look back up to her, I have to ask her again, “You made that just for me?”

“Just for you,” she says with satisfaction all over her face. “You said it was your favorite, and I had some time this morning after pancakes.”

I push out of my chair and wave a hand at the cake. “You just happened to have all these ingredients, huh? You routinely use something as odd as mascarpone?”

Her grin turns mischievous as she shrugs. “Well, I may have had to go to the grocery store for a few things.”

Jesus fuck. I can’t believe she did that for me.

My mind races over the years, and I can’t remember anyone doing something so randomly nice for me. So spontaneous and with the sole intention of doing it to please me.

Picking up the cake, I round the desk and head for the side door that connects to my kitchen. “Let’s take this next door.”

I don’t miss the disgruntled expression on Trista’s face as she clearly expected me to act differently. I’m sure she was thinking I’d be a bit more effusive in my praise, and I intend to be.

Just… in my apartment.

She follows me through the door as I balance the cake on my hand. I immediately lay it down on my kitchen counter and spin around just as she’s walking through the door, taking her face in my hands and walking right into her. My mouth hits hers. She gives a huff of surprise as I turn slightly and back her into the refrigerator. Angling my head, I kiss her deeply. It’s possible because she angles hers the other way, opening her mouth to give me entrance.

Yes, it’s a deep kiss, but it’s not sexual. It’s a show of unbridled happiness that makes me feel like a kid, or perhaps it’s gratitude that Trista perhaps thinks this is something other than “just sex”.

When I pull away, Trista’s cheeks are pink and she’s slightly panting. She whispers breathlessly to me, “I should make you cake more often.”

The grin that breaks wide is my answer, followed by another swift kiss. Then I’m turning away from her and grabbing a fork out of my drawer. Without any pomp, and certainly no circumstance to wait for a plate, I punch my fork down into the top of the cake and pull a huge chunk out.

“Oh, my God.” Trista giggles as she comes to stand beside me at the counter. I angle toward her as I bring the fork to my lips, open my mouth wide, and shove the cake in. Cheeks bulging and the taste of rich cake and lightly sweet, tangy frosting coating my tongue, I groan in satisfaction. Our eyes stay locked as I chew and chew and chew, and finally swallow the heaven in my mouth. Trista’s eyes are sparkling with humor and a bit of pride.

“Good?” she asks.

I give a swipe of my tongue over my bottom lip to catch some stray frosting there. “It’s amazing. Thank you.”

She beams a brilliant smile as she sets the cake carrier on the counter and turns toward the door that leads back into my office. “You’re welcome. Now… I’ve got to get going.”

“Wait,” I say as I snag her arm and turn her back to me. “You just got here.”

“And my work is done,” she says impishly, going to her tiptoes to give me a quick kiss. “I’m meeting Mom and Corinne for lunch, and I’ve got to get going.”

Well, there goes all thought of spending my afternoon with Trista in bed rather than golfing.

But I’d never begrudge her time with Jolene and Corinne. Their unity right now is extremely important. I do pull her into me and wrap my arms around her waist after throwing the fork into the sink. Trista’s hands come to my chest as she looks up at me curiously.

“Take the night off,” I tell her softly and I have to admit, the way her eyes go warm makes me feel fucking really good. “Make it an entire day and night thing with Corinne, okay?”

“Really?” she asks with sweetest type of surprise in her eyes.

“Yeah,” I murmur as I tighten my arms around her. “I’ll keep myself occupied with the cake tonight.”

Her lips quirking, she gets a playful look in her eyes. “We could… um… FaceTime each other later.”

My eyebrows rise with interest, but I play a little stupid. “FaceTime?”

“Naked. FaceTime.” She annunciates each word slowly, and my dick perks up at this suggestion.

And for a man who has done about every dirty thing imaginable, it hits me hard that this is something new. Something I’ve never done with another woman and now, I’m glad she’s not coming so I can have something new and unique just with Trista.

“What time might you be calling me?” I ask in a husky voice.

“Be ready around eleven,” she says, pressing into me. “Clothing is optional.”

“Wrong,” I tell her with a shake of my head. “Naked is mandatory.”

Review:

Whoa. Just whoa.

Wicked Favor is wicked intense. It’s easy to forget in the heat of the moment (as Trista apparently does, often) that Jerico’s her boss and a guy she’s borrowed money from–which makes their relationship a bit more problematic, but when you forget that small detail? It’s easy to be distracted and see why they might be distracted as well. Things end up very, very well in the end, so all’s well that ends well, right?

This book worked just fine as a standalone, since it’s the first in a spin off of the original series. I’m absolutely looking forward to seeing where Ms. Bennett is taking this series next.

New Release Review! SEX IN THE STICKS by Sawyer Bennett (Love Hurts #1)

Wake up and feel the wood! In the first of a series of irresistible standalone romances from New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett, a city girl rediscovers love and lust in the Alaskan wilderness.

Valentine French may be the sassiest dating columnist in New York City, but the abundance of metrosexuals in her adopted metropolis is seriously cramping her style. Where are the beefy all-American boys? Hoping to find some inspiration, Val heads to Alaska, where the men outnumber the women fifteen to one and wrestle grizzly bears for sport. Or so she can only imagine. Suddenly the most eligible bachelorette in a town full of horny lumberjacks, Val is writing her best columns ever. But if she doesn’t get her nose out of her laptop, she just might miss out on Mr. Right.

Logan Burke is the sheriff of the little podunk town that Val finds so charmingly backward. He’s not that different from the guys she’s using for her little experiment; it’s just that one date would never be enough for Logan. As he listens to Val complain about love over beers in the local tavern, he realizes that she can’t see the forest for the trees. Because if she would ever give up her Prada bags and fourteen-dollar martinis, Logan would give her the only luxury that matters: his heart.

Review:

Oh my goodness–LOVED!

Valentine French is about as fish-out-of-water as a heroine can get–and yes, we’ve seen the whole socialite stuck in the wilds bit before, but somehow here Ms. Bennett made it feel new and fresh again. There were so many LOL moments, so many awwwwwwww moments (seriously, how many warm coats does Logan own? Totally not complaining, though, because…So. Sweet.), and so many [fans self] moments…I need more from this series. Like, yesterday!

I’ll admit Val was a bit much while in NYC, but fortunately she didn’t stay there long enough for me to give up on her, and then Alaska managed to work its magic on her. Well, Alaska and Logan. 😉

New Release Review! SUGAR RUSH by Sawyer Bennett (Sugar Bowl #2)

Sugar Rush
by Sawyer Bennett

Synopsis:

In the steamy and suspenseful sequel to Sugar Daddy (“A totally gripping take on romance and revenge!”—Lauren Blakely), a heartbreaking rift threatens to unravel a dangerous alliance . . . and a fragile new love.

After posing as an escort for the Sugar Bowl online dating service, Sela Halstead is looking for one thing: payback. She’s closing in on the site’s heartless founder, Jonathon Townsend, and she needs Beckett North, Townsend’s business partner and her lover, by her side. She’d thought that their intimate nights together had forged an unbreakable bond, but after a shocking betrayal, Sela begins to doubt the brilliant bad boy. When push comes to shove, can she trust Beck to do the right thing?

Now that he understands the truth, Beck will stop at nothing to secure the reckoning Sela deserves. But between his desire for her and his disgust for JT, Beck doesn’t exactly have a lot of control over his emotional state. Left with no other choice, he must summon all his discipline to maintain JT’s trust and pretend that they’re still friends. But how far will Beck go to prove his loyalty to Sela? He nearly lost her once. To keep her, Beck might have to kill for her.

Note: Sugar Rush ends on a cliffhanger. Sela and Beck’s story concludes in Sugar Free!

Review:

Whoa. Sugar Rush is really very aptly named–reading it is quite a rush!

It begins pretty much exactly where Sugar Daddy ended and throws you right into the thick of things. To be honest, I started out feeling a tad bit lost, because it’s been a while since book 1 came out. (Okay, okay, it’s not really a matter of time, but the sheer amount of other stuff I’ve read in between…it’s been said that I read a lot. Which I take as a compliment, of course. That’s how it’s meant, right?) But no worries, I pulled up Sugar Daddy, re-read the ending, and was all good to go.

And go we all did–Sela, Beck, and me–right up until that OMG ending. And yep, it’s a cliffhanger. And yeah, you really do need to have read book 1 to really appreciate where they go in book 2. And gah, Sugar Free isn’t coming out until October. October!

(Note to self: check and see if it’s up on NG already, and see if there’s any room in the calendar for it before classes start on August 29. What are the chances??? ;))

Even though we left Sela and Beck in a pretty bad place at the end of Sugar Daddy, they manage to resolve their differences fairly quickly (a little too quickly, to be honest. I appreciate the path that Beck took to get there, and am all for getting the story moving, but still, he “got there” a bit too fast to be totally believable) and are soon moving full speed ahead both with their relationship and with the make-JT-pay-for-his-crimes plan, which of course Beck gets behind 100%.

Their plan is decent, if not entirely ethical (okay, not really ethical at all, but look at what he did) and holy schmoly, are the two of them ever good together. The tension steadily amps up as they go along, leaving us with one heck of an are-you-kidding-me-it’s-ending-there? cliffhanger.

And now all that’s left is waiting for OCTOBER.

Sigh 🙂

“This book devastated me in the most wonderful way,” raves Meredith Wild. In Sugar Daddy, the New York Times bestselling author of the Cold Fury series proves that vengeance is sweet—but seduction is to die for.

Sela Halstead lost her innocence in a way that no sixteen-year-old should ever have to endure. She’s spent years trying to forget that night even while wondering about the identities of the monsters who brutalized her—until a telltale tattoo flashes across Sela’s TV screen. The incriminating ink belongs to Jonathon Townsend, the millionaire founder of The Sugar Bowl, a website that matches rich older men with impressionable young women. Obsessed with revenge, Sela infiltrates Townsend’s world, only to come face-to-face with a tantalizing complication: Beckett North, his charismatic business partner. The tech mastermind behind The Sugar Bowl, Beck always gets what he wants, in business and in bed. And yet, for a man who’s done every dirty thing imaginable, there’s something about the naïve, fresh-faced Sela that sparks his hottest fantasies. Because with her, it’s not just about sex. Beck opens up to her in ways he never has with other girls. So why does he get the feeling that she’s hiding something? In a world of pleasure and power, the shocking truth could turn them against each other—or bind them forever.

Note: Sugar Daddy ends on a cliffhanger. Sela and Beck’s story continues in Sugar Rush and Sugar Free!

Review:

Gah! Note to self: check to see if a book has a cliffhanger ending because it’s the first of a three-part series before you’re halfway through and totally invested in the characters.

I mean, I probably would have signed up for it anyway, because: Sawyer Bennett. But I would have been better prepared from page one. Because holy major relationship cliffhanger, Batman! How soon until Sugar Rush is out???

I wasn’t too sure about this one in the beginning–Sela lived through a pretty horrific event ten years earlier

Spoiler Inside SelectShow
, but her solution (murder) was worrisome, because: murder.

And then she decides to use a totally sweet guy, Beck, to help her accomplish it. What is she thinking??? Now I’m more conflicted.

But then Sela and Beck are so freaking adorable together (yay!). Plus, totally smoking between the sheets. And on the table. And the couch. And…well, you get the idea. Plus, Beck’s all kinds of cuteness with his sister and niece, and gets along great with Sela’s dad. And Sela starts to think twice about her goals (thank goodness).

But then…the guy who perpetrated the event that changed Sela’s life for the worse, Beck’s longtime friend and business partner, really shows his true self in the last 10% or so, and everything completely falls apart. Sela makes a bad decision, Beck gets angry, and bam! the gosh darned cliffhanger ending is upon us.

Seriously. When is book two coming out?

August???

Sigh…okay….

New Release Review! HAWKE by Sawyer Bennett (Cold Fury Hockey #5)

Title: Hawke
Series: Carolina Cold Fury Hockey #5
 Author: Sawyer Bennett
 Publisher: Loveswept
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 15, 2016
Blurb:

The New York Times bestselling hockey series featuring the Carolina Cold Fury continues as the team’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.

Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.

Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

Review:

Cold Fury Hockey does second chance romance–and scores!

As appears to be the norm for Cold Fury Hockey heroes (Max is next, woot!), I really liked Hawke as a hero. He’s definitely not perfect–pretty much to the end he’s still drinking a bit more than I would be comfortable with–but I really liked how he tried to rebuild things with Vale once he had the chance, and even before that how he was there for both her and her dad when they needed him. Overall he’s a standup guy, a great friend, and of course, a kick-butt hockey player. Le sigh 🙂

When Vale finally reveals to him the reason behind her sudden dumpage of him ten years earlier (which was kind of understandable, but kind of weak at the same time) he responded in the best possible way…fortunately!…and then relationship cuteness, and sexytimes of course, commenced.

Until the black moment, part 2 arrives…

Let’s just say I wasn’t able to put the book down once the second breakup happened–I just had to keep going until they got back together. Fortunately it doesn’t take as long as the first time 😉 The epilogue has all kinds of cuteness going on, not just for Hawke and Vale but for other series characters as well.

Hawke‘s the fifth in the series, but since both Hawke and Vale are new to the Cold Fury team, it works especially well as a standalone. A friendly warning, however: this series can be habit forming! (But hey, at least the backstory can keep you occupied until book six comes out…)

New Release Review: FRICTION by Sawyer Bennett (Legal Affairs #8)

Friction
by Sawyer Bennett

Synopsis:

At the powerhouse law firm of Knight & Payne, winning comes first and ethics a distant second. Leary Michaels uses her female charms to daze opponents, and it’s always worked well—until now. On her most personal case yet, she finds herself going up against a defense attorney just as skilled, shameless, and seductive as she is.

Reeve Holloway has never met a woman as sure of her own sexuality, or as ruthless in wielding it, as Leary is. But he won’t be toyed with. What Leary starts, he’ll finish—in the courtroom, the bedroom, or any-damn-place he wants. The sex is uninhibited, electrifying, and absolutely against the rules. Reeve’s job is to ruin Leary’s case…even if it destroys her in the process and costs him the woman he’s come to love.

Review:

Whoa–this book was H.O.T. Even more than I was expecting–and in the best way!

It’s actually 8th in the series, which I didn’t realize going in (so far, I’ve only read and loved Ms. Bennett’s Cold Fury hockey series). It worked just fine as a standalone, though, and now I’m totally inspired to read the rest of the series.

Leary Michaels and Reeve Holloway are opposing counsel in a medical malpractice case, one that Leary is personally invested in for several reasons. Leary starts their relationship off with a bang when she orchestrates an elevator encounter with her unsuspecting opponent–so much fun to read, but oh my goodness, she had my mouth hanging open in shock the whole time! Soon the two of them can barely keep their hands off each other and do many, many things in places they probably shouldn’t be doing them…wowza.

Besides some absolutely off-the-charts scenes, though, there’s a story here that you can really sink your teeth into. Leary’s case is very important to her, and the scenes that deal with the court case get to be pretty intense. The two of them do a decent job keeping their personal relationship and the courtroom controversy separate until the later part of the trial, when Reeve does something that Leary finds unforgivable. Reeve’s been torn for a long time over what to do, though, and ultimately decides he has to do his job even though he no longer believes in the side he’s on.

Can this relationship be saved? Should it be?

Of course! And Ms. Bennet does a marvelous job of bringing the two of them back together–it’s absolutely believable and realistic for them both. Dual narrators were used for the audio version–Sebastian York (narrator of the Tangled series) did a stellar job–I love his voice and the ‘tude he brings to his characters! Kendall Taylor was okay; most of the time she did a decent job, but there were parts when she just seemed off. It wasn’t enough to put me off the story, though, because then Reeve/Sebastian would come back on… 😉
