The Baby Bombshell

by Victoria James
Shadow Creek, Montana #2
Publication Date: April 10, 2017
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Bliss, Contemporary Romance

SYNOPSIS:

Lily Cookson has a few rules for the New Year, the most important being don’t fall for Jack Bailey. The gorgeous, rugged man returned with a new look and a determination to win her back, catching her off guard. After a forbidden night in his arms, she vows never to let it happen again. But when morning sickness kicks in a few weeks later, Lily realizes staying away from Jack just got a whole lot harder.

Jack Bailey left Shadow Creek behind five years ago when his world imploded around him, knowing it would be best for everyone if he was gone…including Lily. It took him a long time to get his life back on track and grow into the kind of man she needs him to be. Now he’s determined to prove to Lily that he’s back for good and ready to commit, but the secrets she’s holding onto are nothing compared to the bombshell he drops…

EXCERPT:

She squeezed her eyes shut and he took that opportunity to close the distance between them, gently folding her up in his arms until all she could breathe was him. She stood there, not hugging him back, but not pushing him away. His chest was hard against the side of her face. His hands were in her hair and she knew all she had to do was lean back slowly and his mouth would be on hers. But she wasn’t ready for that, because she knew all her control would be gone at that point. Instead, she breathed in the scent that was him. It was like she was home.

All at once, her past and her present, her pain and her joy was all here, wrapped up in the one man she needed more than anyone. God did she want to believe in him. Her arms wrapped around his waist, and she felt him shudder before his strong arms held her tightly. “Lily, there’s been no one.”

She wanted to push him, but instead ended up clutching two fistfuls of his shirt. “I can’t ever get back together with you. It doesn’t matter that you claim you still love me, that you never stopped loving me. It doesn’t matter that it’s New Year’s Eve and you, the love of my life, are back in town and looking so good that all I want to do is jump you,” she said, blabbing an embarrassing mile a minute, hating that she had no filter when she was drunk and that she had a tendency for theatrical, dramatic jabbering. “It doesn’t matter that we’re here. Alone. Two adults with a past but no hope for a future.”

“Lily.”

“I don’t trust you anymore,” she whispered, aware that she was pulling him in closer as she spoke. God, he stilled smelled like Jack. He felt like her Jack. She closed her eyes, feeling his hands on her wrists, pulling them off his chest. His hands cupped each side of her face, and she felt the calluses, such a contrast to the tender way he was holding her. Oh God, she was such toast. One night. She could do one night.

His lips hovered over her mouth, and it took all her self-control not to whimper. “Give me tonight. One night to prove to you that we still belong together.” She reminded herself to breathe normally, but it was so hard to breathe normally with Jack whispering about a night together. His beard scraped against her cheek as he whispered in her ear, and her knees threatened to buckle. “I wrote to you every day. Every single day, because it made me feel close to you, because I missed you so damn much.”

She squeezed her eyes shut, tilting her head up, surrendering, as his words impacted her until she couldn’t defend herself anymore. “One night. Then tomorrow my new number one New Year’s resolution is going to be ‘no more Jack Bailey.’”

There was the tiniest hint of a smile, like he was making a resolution of his own, before his mouth finally captured hers in what had to be the best reunion kiss of all time.

REVIEW:

The Baby Bombshell is a feel-good, sweet second-chance romance story. If you read book one in the series ( Christmas with the Sheriff ), you knew this story was coming and were more than ready for it–plenty of teasers were given throughout. (And if you haven’t read Chase and Julia’s story yet, no worries–this could work as a standalone too. You just might not feel the same degree of needing to see how things will turn out for Jack and Lily before even starting the story ;))

A family tragedy five years ago not only tore apart the Bailey family, but also ended Lily’s plans for the future when her fiance, Jack Bailey, left Shadow Creek–and her–without much of an explanation. Now Jack’s back, and says he never stopped loving her, but Lily’s gone through too much without the guy she depended on by her side. Can he prove his worth to her once again, or is it too late?

I’m still a bit torn about Jack’s reasons for leaving and staying away so long, especially given the revelations he makes in the last third of the book. On the one hand, guilt is a powerful thing, but on the other…I just don’t know. I’m glad he’s back, and yes, he does a lot here to prove that he’s really back now, but I don’t blame Lily for holding out as long as she does.

All’s well that ends well, though, and I was very satisfied with where this story ends up. A possible story for Gwen is strongly hinted at (the “Muffin Man”–hee hee hee) that will definitely have me haunting the lists to see when it’s going to be released 🙂

Christmas with the Sheriff
by Victoria James
A Shadow Creek, Montana Novel
Publication Date: November 7, 2016
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Bliss, Holiday, Romance

Synopsis: After fleeing her beloved small town five years ago, Julia Bailey is back to spend Christmas with her family. Returning is hard, but keeping the devastating secret about her late husband is even harder. Her place isn’t in Big Sky Country any longer…but the more time she spends with the irresistible Sheriff who saved her once before, and his adorable little daughter, the more Julia starts wishing she could let go of the past and start a new life.
Single dad and county Sheriff Chase Donovan had been secretly in love with his best friend’s wife for years. But after her traumatic loss he knew Julia needed to get away from Shadow Creek, even though helping her leave was the last thing he wanted to do. Now she’s home and he doesn’t intend to lose her a second time. Chase is going to prove to Julia just how good they can be together this Christmas…and forever.
Review:

A sweet holiday romance!

Ms. James did not disappoint with her latest story of small-town love and romance. Julia Bailey lost her husband and toddler son in one dark night, and shortly after left the town she’d called home since high school. Now she’s back, and her husband’s family–and his best friend–have welcomed her with open arms. But Julia’s just staying for the holidays…isn’t she?

I loved Chase, Julia, and Maggie, Chase’s seven-year-old daughter; they were absolutely magic together and it’s pretty much impossible to not be cheering them on from the very first chapter. This is a second chance romance of sorts–Chase has always had a thing for Julia, but never acted on it because she was his best friend’s girl. Throw in the magic of Christmas, and I’m not sure what else you could possibly need… 🙂

Chase is rock solid from the prologue to the epilogue, and Maggie is absolutely adorable and precocious. Reading her bits made me twice as anxious for Thanksgiving to get here, because I clearly need mroe quality time in with my niece and nephew. I wanted the two of them to have a happy ending more than anything, because boy, do they ever deserve it. I could totally relate with the single-parent schedule of assistance he had going on–been there, done that!

Julia was a sympathetic character too, of course, though she could be inconsistent at times. I understood her hesitation, I really did, but her ups and downs with regard to what she wanted, what she was going to do, and exactly what “moving on” looked like for her were a bit frustrating. I was a little disappointed that once again the route of

Spoiler Inside SelectShow
was taken here, but as always I freely admit and accept that is 100% my pet peeve and the rest of the world doesn’t seem to have a problem with it.

But, anyway…

I was super excited to see that this is the first book in a new series, because already Ms. James has managed to pique my interest with a few characters who clearly need their own HEAs. Hopefully Lily and Jack (Julia’s husband’s twin) will have their story next, because do they ever have some big-time backstory going on…

snowbound-with-mr-wrong-cover

Snowbound with Mr. Wrong
by Barbara White Dailee
A Snowflake Valley Novel
Publication Date: November 7, 2016
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Bliss, Holiday, Romance

Synopsis:

Worst. Day. Ever. After Lyssa Barnett’s sister tricks her into reprising her role at Snowflake Valley’s annual children’s party, she doesn’t think anything can be worse than squeezing into her too-small elf costume. Then tall, dark, and way too handsome Nick Tavlock shows up to play Santa…and an unexpected storm leaves them snowbound in the isolated lodge.

The last thing Nick wants is to spend a cozy Christmas Eve with a trio of kids and the woman who dumped him. But as much as Lyssa frustrates him, he can’t stop thinking about her. And soon, he’s fighting very un-Santa-like thoughts of kissing a certain sexy Miss Elf under the mistletoe. As Nick starts to fall for Lyssa all over again, he knows it will take nothing short of a miracle to have Lyssa in his arms on Christmas Day.

Excerpt:

Lyssa plopped the large bowl of popcorn in the middle of the coffee table and distributed the thread and needles she had found in the linen closet upstairs. At this rate, she would have to make a list of items to replace for Amber.

Mollie and Tommy went to work enthusiastically, and even Brent pitched in without a word of complaint. It was watching Nick, though, that made her heart melt. Making Christmas decorations might not have been his “thing,” but he definitely had some skill at working with kids.

He helped Tommy thread a needle, guiding the little boy’s hand until he had slipped the thread through the needle’s eye. Flushed by his success, Tommy proudly insisted upon threading everyone’s needle himself.

When Mollie groaned in frustration after trying to add a half-dozen kernels to her thread, Nick showed her how to pierce the thickest part of the popped corn to prevent it from breaking.

And when it came time to drape the strands on the tree, he asked Brent’s opinion as to the best placement. She had never heard the quiet teen talk and laugh as much as he had in this short time.

She could so easily see Nick with children of his own…and hers… But she had already decided there was no point in dreaming about a future with him. Considering his single-minded focus on work, he could never be the man for her.

She got to her feet and, forcing a smile, said, “I think it’s time for some hot chocolate.”

Four voices rose in agreement, and she escaped gratefully to the kitchen. The more she saw of Nick connecting with the kids, the harder it was for her to watch and the more she wanted to stay away. Yet she knew this trip to the kitchen was only a temporary reprieve.

She just hadn’t realized how temporary.

She had barely started heating the milk in a pan on the stove when Nick entered the kitchen. He came to lean against the counter beside her. “Need something?” she asked brightly.

“Yeah. To tell you I forgot how much fun it is being around you. It’s been a great afternoon.”

She flushed. “No thanks to me. That’s all on the kids. They’re quite a bunch.”

“And you’re quite a woman.”

“No, I’m—”

He reached up and touched his finger to her lips. “Don’t do that, Lyssa. Don’t sell yourself short.” He moved his hand to trace her chin. A shiver tickled along her jaw. “You know what else I need?”

“Hot chocolate?”

“That, too. And this.”

He leaned down and brushed his mouth against hers. He tasted so like the man she had fallen for months ago. His kiss was so tender, so sweet, she couldn’t help but want more. Another thought hovered at the edges of her mind, a thought she felt sure she didn’t want to know. Not now. Not here. Not when his taste and his touch and his total concentration on her were all exactly what she needed.

One dizzying kiss led to another and then another, until she had to curl her fingers in the fabric of his T-shirt to keep herself standing upright. But finally she forced herself to come to her senses. She tilted her head back and whispered, “Stop.”

“Why?” he murmured.

“What would we say if one of the kids walked in?”

“That the chocolate will be ready as soon as I’m done kissing the cook.”

New Release Review and Giveaway! THE REBEL’S RETURN by Victoria James (Red River #4)

The Rebel's Return Tour Banner
The Rebel’s Return
by Victoria James
Red River #4
Publication Date: August 22, 2016
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Bliss, Contemporary Romance

Synopsis:

Natalia Puccini has spent her entire life playing by her overbearing but well-intentioned Italian family’s rules…except the one time she took a chance on a bad boy and fell hard. She’s worked to get her life back on track so when Aiden McCann comes sauntering back into town with his heart-stopping smile, Natalia vows not to fall for him again. There’s no way she’ll let him mess with her perfectly planned life…and there’s no way she’ll let him near her heart again…

Now reformed and a self-made success, Aiden is tormented by regrets and secrets. He left Red River years ago filled with anger and resentment and a promise to never come back. But when his ill father needs help, Aiden knows it’s time to face the mess he left behind, and face the one woman he never got over. It doesn’t matter how beautiful or intriguing she is, though, because he’ll never be able to give her what she needs. As soon as his father is healthy, Aiden is leaving Red River…for good.

Review:

Yay! We’re back in Red River! (And signs indicate that we might be staying for a while, if Dominic’s and Sabrina’s–Nat’s brother and BFF–behavior are any indication…)

The Rebel’s Return is a second chance romance story between high school sweethearts Natalia and Aiden. He had always believed he was too good for her, but the two of them had made forever plans anyway…until Aiden revealed to her that he’d cheated on her with another girl and then promptly left town with his older brother (the older brother who clearly needs his own book, BTW–subtle hint), not to return for ten years.

Until now, when he loses the coin toss to said older brother and has to spend seven weeks back at home with their estranged father, helping him get through his radiation treatments (whether he wants said help or not. It often seems more on the “not” side of the equation.)

Being that it’s Red River, it isn’t long before he’s thrown right into Natalia’s path, something she’s way less than enthused about. It definitely doesn’t help that his return coincides with her cousin’s wedding–to the ex-boyfriend that Francesca slept with before he was an “ex” thankyouverymuch, and in which Nat was acting as maid of honor. Because her cousin is apparently that brand of evil.

Yeah, things could be looking better for our heroine. She decides to conquer at least one part of her out-of-control life by downloading the “Couch to 5K” app (which really exists! We’ll see if I’m inspired enough to try it on time for this year’s Turkey Trot–check back in a few weeks). But dealing with her first and only true love and her miserably vindictive cousin? If only there were an app for that…

I love both second chance stories and this series, so it was a given I was going to be reading this story ASAP. Nat and Aiden have great chemistry together, and it’s clear from the very first chapter that these two have by no means moved on from their ten years ago split. They’re thrown together early on and often, and every time the sparks are flying like mad, though Nat’s doing all she can to shut Aiden’s every attempt down as soon as he makes it if not before.

We learn early on that Aiden hadn’t really cheated back then–he’d just said he had, for an unknown-for-most-of-the-book reason–and it takes a really, really long time for that truth to be revealed…a bit on the “too long” side. Nat begins to suspect (with the help of a well-meaning but nosy townsperson) earlier, but her confrontational style with Aiden for much of the book is swoop in, strike fast, and leave ASAP before he has a chance to respond. Not that he seemed anxious to reveal all anyway…but it did seem like the not-talking-to-each-other-honestly-about-our-past portion of the book stretched out much too long. She angrily held a grudge, he stayed frustratingly mum on the truth, they danced ever closer to doing…something. Rinse and repeat. Again and again.

When he does finally get his head out of his butt, though, Aiden does it in spectacular–and extremely public–fashion. His grand gesture is absolutely wonderful, and made up for a lot of the frustration he gives us earlier. (The fact that this is a short and sweet read makes it easier not to dwell as well.) There’s plenty of continue-the-series fodder here as well, with both the hero and heroine having unmarried–and determinedly bachelor–brothers. Which reminds me of one of my favorite lines from Aiden: “No one enjoys being a bachelor. That’s just what we tell ourselves so we don’t have to go through the painful process of getting our heads out of our as$es.”

And he would know. 😉

The Rebel’s Return is fourth in the series, but would work fine as a standalone (and gateway to the series!) if necessary. Though if the teaser about how Aiden’s former partner in crime Jake and Claire got together doesn’t at least tempt you to look up The Best Man’s Baby , I don’t know what will!

Such a feel-good read!

If you’ve read Falling for the P.I. or The Billionaire’s Christmas Proposal , then you’ve seen teasers about this book, and you were probably as anxious as I was to get to read it! Matt, the hero in P.I. alludes to something he knows about Alex and Cassy at the end of his book, and since Proposal is happening at the same time as this book and Hayden’s close friends with its hero Ethan, we see glimpses of him in that book and get hints about what’s going on.

Totally. Worth. The. Wait. 🙂

(And no worries if you haven’t read either of those books, because this one works okay as a standalone too.)

I really enjoyed Alex and Hayden’s story. They were just adorable together–once they let themselves be together, that is. The question of Cassy’s paternity was like a giant sword, though, hanging over their heads for so much of the book; it even had me on edge!

I like how Ms. James resolved that issue–very satisfactorily done. The book left me with all kinds of warm cozy feelings, and has me almost looking forward to the white, fluffy stuff they’re saying we’re going to be getting this weekend–even if the chances I’ll get stranded in a dodgy B&B with a totally hot billionaire are practically nil.

The third “sister”, Cara’s, story is strongly hinted at toward the end–I can’t wait to see how things turn out for her as well 🙂

Hoping to make it to North Africa, she stows away on the yacht of Greek millionaire Demetri Christodoulou. But when Egyptian agents board the boat, she can either jump overboard…or claim she’s Demetri’s new bride.

Tired of being no more than the bastard disgrace to the Christodoulou name, Demetri intends to build a luxury resort below his grandfather’s house so the old man has no choice but to acknowledge that Demetri has made something of himself. But first, he needs a wife to complete the land purchase.

With Rania now at his mercy, a plan comes together. He’ll play along, protecting her and helping to free her uncle, but in exchange, he demands a real marriage. But keeping the vivacious heiress out of his heart will be a lot harder than keeping her on his ship…

New Release Review! THE BILLIONAIRE’S CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL by Victoria James

I absolutely love this cover–so adorable!

The Billionaire’s Christmas Proposal
by Victoria James

Synopsis:

She’s everything he wants for Christmas…

Social worker Allison Barrington’s home went up in smoke, literally, a month before Christmas. Now the guardian of her teenage sister and a crazy pup, she shows up on the doorstep of the only man in the city she can trust. Resisting Ethan Dane had never been easy, but luckily, Allie isn’t into cutthroat playboy businessmen. And Ethan is as driven as they come.

Ethan Dane has wanted Allie since the moment he laid eyes on her at their best friends’ wedding. Having her in his home is the perfect chance to prove to her that their chemistry can’t be denied, but when he finds out that the biggest business coup of his career means destroying the youth center where Allie works, Ethan is forced to decide what kind of man he wants to be…

Review:

Since The Billionaire’s Christmas Baby was the very first book by Victoria James that I ever read, I was very excited to get my hands on the follow up book, The Billionaire’s Christmas Proposal. It tells the story of Allison and Ethan, the best friends of Hannah and Jackson, the hero and heroine of Christmas Baby. (We also get a short visit with Hannah and Jackson here too–bonus!)

Ethan and Ally met at the wedding of their best friends, and felt an instant attraction–one Ethan was all for acting on immediately and which Ally resisted in every way possible. At the start of Christmas Proposal, Ally’s turned Ethan down no fewer than three times already. However, when her apartment goes down in flames–literally–leaving her and her little sister and dog without a home, Ethan’s the first person Allison thinks of to go to for help.

Before Ethan can blink, he’s moved Ally, her teen sister Dani, and their one-eyed and slightly incontinent dog Captain Hook into his penthouse apartment. Even though the month of December is traditionally a tough one for him, things are starting to look up. Until he finds out that the challenge his father has issued to both him and his brother–design a condo for me and win future control of the family business–will result in the closing of the teen homeless shelter and refuge that is Ally’s pride and joy.

But he’ll fix it. Somehow. And not tell her that he might be involved in crushing her dream until he does. Because that’s a solid plan that nothing can go wrong with.

Riiiight. 😉

I loved Ally and Ethan together–they have such great chemistry and engage in some really fun banter. The secondary characters, especially Ally’s sister Dani, are well-fleshed out and add a lot to the story. I loved seeing Dani interact with both Ally and Ethan–she’s a riot! Raising a sixteen-year-old sister has got to be the only thing more challenging than raising a sixteen-year-old daughter. I totally felt Ally’s pain as her sister barely contained her despair at her high levels of uncool–but hey, it’s way funnier when it’s happening to someone else, especially when it’s in a book!

It was fairly obvious what Ethan was going to have to do to make things work out in the end, but it made sense that he doesn’t see it right away since his rocky relationship with his family has been coloring things for him for so long. Naturally the Haven House problem is going to be the cause of their relationship crisis, but Ethan will pull things together in the end to bring us a highly satisfying–and seasonally appropriate–HEA. Yay!

As a bonus, The Billionaire’s Christmas Proposal is happening at the same time as another brand new book by Ms. James–Falling for Her Enemy–and gives us a tiny glimpse into that story, since Hayden, the hero, is a close friend of Ethan’s. We get just enough to make me glad I’ve already got it on my TBR and will be reading it by the end of the week 🙂

New Release Review and Giveaway! FALLING FOR THE P.I. by VIctoria James (Still Harbor #1)

A new series!

TVTFallingforthePI-VictoriaJames

Falling for the PI
Still Harbor # 1
By: Victoria James
Releasing August 10th, 2015
Entangled Bliss

Blurb:

Teacher Kate Abbott’s fresh start in Still Harbor was the beginning of the life that she and her two best friends always imagined for themselves. Still, being a working single parent of a special needs daughter hasn’t exactly improved Kate’s love life. But Kate’s preference for nachos over men quickly disappears when she meets the oh-so-sexy Matt Lane.

Until she finds out he’s a cop.

Matt is a former cop-turned-private investigator, and he knows fear when he sees it. A cop clearly spooked Kate…or hurt her. Still, something about the gorgeous professor catches his attention, and despite his “no settling down” policy, he can’t resist her. But all of the attraction in the world won’t be enough to overcome Kate’s past…

Excerpt-Banner

Excerpt:

She turned her face up to his, her lips reaching for him. He cupped her face gently with his hands and proceeded to kiss her thoroughly, deeply, until neither of them had the desire to speak. The emotions she evoked in him were like nothing he’d ever experienced. The first night he’d met her at the bar he’d wanted to go to bed with her. He’d had an insane attraction to her, found her gorgeous and drop-dead sexy, and now he wanted her even more, was even more attracted. Except now he also wanted to wake up with her, wanted to know every part of her.

Matt kissed her until she couldn’t stand on her own. Her knees wobbled. He picked her up, sat her on the counter, and stood between her legs. Everything became hotter, fast.

Their hands bumped into each other, competing for access, and he let her win as she pulled his shirt off. He lifted her and walked with her legs wrapped around his waist into his bedroom.

“You’re not carrying me.” He didn’t feel like pointing out that she made no attempt to disengage herself.

“I am, because I don’t want you to let go.”

“Well, it’s not very smart, because of your leg injury.”

“Sex rule number one? Don’t remind a guy about any inadequacies.”

She laughed softly and leaned forward to kiss his neck. “We both know your ego isn’t that fragile. Maybe you should use a cane.”

He dropped her on the bed, both of them laughing. He followed her down only to have her wrestle him underneath her. She straddled him, out of breath. When he made eye contact with her, the humor was gone, something changing in her expression. His room was dark, but the faint glow of light from the hallway streamed through, enough that he could make out every expression, every flicker in her eyes. She leaned down, took his hands off her waist, and placed them beside his head. She didn’t break his stare.

There was a look in her eyes, something other than desire. The room was quiet except for the sound of their breathing. He waited, knowing she needed to make the next move, knowing this wasn’t going to be like anything he’d ever experienced. God, he’d wait forever, even if it killed him. She sat there, on top of him, and he sensed he was being evaluated, tried for some crime he had or hadn’t committed.

He tried to figure her out, as he’d done countless times before, studying her unreadable expression. After another minute he slowly lowered his hands to grasp her thighs, feeling the heat through the soft denim. He didn’t say a word as he grasped the edge of her sweater and she lowered her head as he lifted it off and tossed it to the floor. His gaze roamed over her bared torso appreciatively, taking in the full breasts, the black lace bra.

With self-control he hadn’t known he possessed, he kept his hands on her waist, her soft, pale skin a contrast to his. Her eyes were still on him, like she was expecting something. He knew her guard hadn’t come down yet. He didn’t have her trust yet. And he knew she wasn’t waiting for words. Whatever darkness Kate had, whatever wounds, he knew they wouldn’t be healed by some compliments. He knew that what she needed from him wasn’t words.

Review:

If more first dates featured the world’s best poutine, surely the world would be a better place? 😉

I had so much fun reading this book! As always, Ms. James’s sense of humor shines through in her writing. There were so many giggle-worthy scenes (and more than a few snort-worthy as well), that I couldn’t possibly have kept track of them all. The ongoing joke of “Mr. Art Zibbits” was especially entertaining. (I could explain it here, but really it’ll be funnier if you read it yourself straight from the source.)

Once again Ms. James has created characters it’s easy to fall for quickly. Matt is an all-around great guy; he’s almost too perfect, except for his “no single mothers / no long-term relationship” rule. (Which he actually turns around on pretty quickly–but it’s hard to find fault with it, given his aforementioned awesomeness and the fact that you just want him to be with Kate. So. Much.)

Kate has been through a lot–she lost her entire family as a teen and was put into the foster system; before that she and her mother were victims of domestic violence–but she’s turned her life around. She’s adopted a beautiful little girl and is opening a home for women and children escaping domestic violence in her new home town. Trust isn’t something that comes easy to her, however, and though she doesn’t want anyone to fight her battles for her, she has a hard time dealing with people who are rude to or about Janie, her special needs daughter.

Matt learned at an early age to stand up to bullies and defend those who cannot defend themselves; together the two of them will come to see that their differences will make them stronger together.

Falling for the P.I. is a fairly short novel; but there’s so much there!

There’s just something about starting a new series from an author you enjoy–so many infinite possibilities–it’s kind of like starting a new school year, but without the anticipatory homework dread 😉 Ms. James gives us a lot to look forward to in her newest series, Still Harbor–three sisters-of-the-heart (each of whom has adopted a little girl, and they’re raising them all together) two of whom are decidedly single at the novel’s end; solid supporting characters in Matt’s mother, sister, and business partner; the thrill of a new fictional location to explore–this book has all that and more. A mystery with Kate’s sister Alex and her daughter is suggested in the epilogue–hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to find out what it is!

Author Info:

Victoria James is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance.

Victoria always knew she wanted to be a writer and in grade five, she penned her first story, bound it (with staples and a cardboard cover) and did all the illustrations herself. Luckily, this book will never see the light of day again.

In high school she fell in love with historical romance and then contemporary romance. After graduating University with an English Literature degree, Victoria pursued a degree in Interior Design and then opened her own business. After her first child, Victoria knew it was time to fulfill her dream of writing romantic fiction.

Victoria is a hopeless romantic who is living her dream, penning happily-ever-after’s for her characters in between managing kids and the family business. Writing on a laptop in the middle of the country in a rambling old Victorian house would be ideal, but she’s quite content living in suburbia with her husband, their two young children, and very bad cat.

New Release Review: RESCUED BY THE RANCHER by Victoria James (Tall Pines Ranch #2)

Finally! Meredith and Gage’s story 🙂

Rescued by the Rancher
by Victoria James

About the book:

Starting over and starting a whole lotta trouble…

Meredith Anderson left her difficult past behind to create a new life for herself in Tall Pines—where she can be the independent, confident woman she always dreamed of being. Now she’s a partner in her sister’s wedding planning business, helping brides realize their happily-ever-afters…even as she promises herself to never fall in love.

Meredith’s sweetness and vulnerability brings out the protective side of rancher Gage McAllister—even though their worlds are miles apart. All it takes is one night for desire to take hold of them both, a sizzling encounter that can only lead to the promise of more. But Meredith isn’t looking for more, and even if she was, Gage is set to leave Tall Pines behind him…

Review:

Such a good read!

Rescued by the Rancher is the follow-up to
The Rancher’s Second Chance
; though if you haven’t read that one yet (and why? why haven’t you? ;)) don’t let that stop you from picking up this one–Ms. James gives you the important information you need to know here.

Our heroine, Meredith, is the older sister of Second Chance’s Melanie. It’s a year after the events of book one, when Gage found her outside the Tall Pines Ranch and carried her unconscious body into the house. He’s been fighting his attraction to her ever since, but she’s been too busy fighting her own demons to notice.

Or has she?

Mer’s trying to make a new life for herself at Tall Pines, and she’s decided that the new her needs…something. Not to be under a man’s control again–not ever again, thank you–but one night with Gage, the one man who makes her feel safe and protected, should be just what she needs.

Just one night…riiiiiight. 😉

Even though there’s a one-night stand at its heart (okay, it’s way more than one night–but you knew that going in, right?) Rescued by the Rancher is a PG-13 read–it’s part of the Bliss line, after all. Gage and Meredith’s romance is sweet and behind-closed-doors steamy–so much fun to read!

One of my favorite parts of this book is that even though its title indicates that Mer will be “rescued by the rancher”, she actually takes charge of her own rescue herself and already has a plan in place before Gage shows up to help. It shows just how far she’s come from the cowering shell of a woman we first see in Second Chance. Plus, she gets an HEA with a smoking hot rancher. Win-win!

New Release Review: THE DOCTOR’S FAKE FIANCEE by Victoria James (Red River #3)

Another great installment in the Red River series!

The Doctor’s Fake Fiancée
by Victoria James

About the book:

Their marriage bargain is just what the doctor ordered…

Former surgeon and self-professed life-long bachelor Evan Manning has one thing on his mind—to reclaim the career that a car accident stole from him. But when he’s forced to return to his hometown of Red River, Evan comes face-to-face with the gorgeous woman who’s haunted his dreams for the last year—the woman he rescued from the burning car that injured his hand. Now Evan needs her help. In a month, he’ll have the job opportunity of a lifetime…he just needs a wife to get it. Artist Grace Matheson is down on her luck again…until she walks into Evan Manning’s office. When her sexy former hero hears that she needs work, he offers her a job and a home—if she’ll pretend she’s his fiancée. Grace knows she shouldn’t fall for him. Once the month is up, Evan will be back to his old life. But the more time they spend together, the more real their feelings become—and the more likely heartbreak is.

Review:

Reading the teaser blurb for this one at the end of The Best Man’s Baby, I knew I was going to have to read this one ASAP. But I was going to have to wait, of course…

And oh, Evan’s story was so worth the wait!

Sure, the inciting incident hinges on some pretty big coincidences (namely, Grace, trained as a medical receptionist, showing up at Evan’s office the day his other one quits), but hey, I can absolutely live with that. They served the purpose–to get Evan and Grace together–and the story was just a whole lot of fun to read, with characters it was so easy to root for.

(And fortunately, Mini Moe #2 was upstairs for most of it, sleeping off a cold so I didn’t have to keep explaining every time I laughed out loud, said, “Awwwww…”, or uttered any of the other involuntary noises of enjoyment I made while reading. Teenagers. Always so nosy. Not to mention critical, as they interrupt my reading time.)

Evan Manning is the classic “thinks he knows what he wants but he’s dead wrong” character. Unable to continue his career as a surgeon due to the accident, he’s all set to take over as CEO of a group of private plastic surgery clinics. First, though, he’s back in his hometown for one month, filling in for the man who inspired him to become a doctor in the first place. He’s only there marking time before moving on–he resents his chatty patients, wishes his brothers and sisters-in-law weren’t quite so busy-bodyish, and believes he is, as his father often told him, bigger than the small town he grew up in. He knows having a family isn’t for him, and the only kids he gets along with are his niece and nephew. (Contemplating his awkwardness around children, he reflects that, “Luckily for him, they [Ella and Michael] probably assumed his weirdness was due to the gene pool he shared with their fathers.” An LOL moment.) Nothing, he’s sure, could ever be more important to him than his job.

Oh, and then he thought those four words that are a death knoll to the singlehood of romance heroes everywhere. As he considered his plan to get Grace to agree to be his fake fiancee to better his chances at being hired on as Medcorp’s CEO, the words, “What could go wrong?” ran through his head.

Yep. They caused me to snort unattractively. Obviously he doesn’t read romance novels.

I loved the character of Grace. She’s funny and friendly and honest and always puts her son first. She volunteers at the places that have helped her in the past–like the shelter she and her mom stayed at–even though she herself is only a step or two above the women there whom she is helping. She ties her hair back with a Spider-Man shoelace and writes her very detailed daily “to do” lists in crayon. Heck, anyone who can refer to herself (referencing her curly auburn hair) as “[Ronald McDonald’s] older, crazier-looking, dark-haired sister” is going to be a favorite in my book.

Christopher was adorable, and had a tendency to steal the scene when he showed up. At times his conversation was a bit too adult to be believed, especially when he’d call Evan “Dr. Nevan” in the next sentence, but those parts were few and far between. Revealing all of his mother’s secrets, though? Totally spot-on. (And as a former preschool teacher, I can just guess what he was saying at school–poor Grace!)

The family relationships were some of the best parts of this novel–Evan and his brothers, Evan and his niece and nephew, Evan and his sisters-in-law, Grace and Christopher–their interactions were at times touching, sweet, and wickedly funny. (The conversation Evan and Quinn had about buying Jake a pink box of tissues? Another snort-laugh moment.) These scenes all rang true, and made it a joy to read.

And of course the romance was just so sweet and sigh-worthy. Until it isn’t. But then Evan eventually pulls his head out of his butt and figures out what he really wants–and sigh.

I read The Doctor’s Fake Fiancee in an afternoon–I couldn’t put it down! Victoria James is quickly becoming a must-read for me.

New Release Review: The Rancher’s Second Chance by Victoria James

Best friend’s older brother? Yessssss!

9781622665129 (1)
Title: The Rancher’s Second Chance
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Author: Victoria James
Series: Passion Creek
Publisher: Entangled Indulgence
Language: English
Pages: 250
Format: Ebook

 Synopsis:

Widowed rancher Cole Forrester is all about running his family’s ranch and guarding his heart. The last thing he’s looking for is love, but when his little sister can’t make it home to handle some of her wedding details, he’s forced to entertain the event planner, Melanie Simms.

Melanie is everything he’s not even remotely interested in: she’s high-society, complicated, and high maintenance. But when he’s stranded with her at his remote cabin in the Colorado mountains, he realizes he’s seriously underestimated her. She’s hiding something about her past from him, but despite everything, he finds himself falling for the last woman he ever expected, and the first woman to make him want to give his heart and risk everything…

 Review:

I loved this one. The best-friend’s-older-brother troupe (why did all my besties only have sisters? Why?) on its own can be so much fun, so Victoria James pretty much had me at that. But then add in the fact that Cole’s a widower and she manages to get him a new  HEA without demonizing the first spouse? Win-win!

(Seriously, people. Why does every single widow/ widower in a romance have to have had an evil first spouse? Usually even when I think an author’s going in a different direction there, they suddenly find out before the novel’s end that he/ she did something awful and it is only just coming to light now. This seriously drives me crazy. Why can’t a romance hero or heroine be happy twice? You’d think of all genres, romance would be the place where this happens all the time, but let me assure you, this is not the case.)

Okay, mini-rant over. For now. Victoria James didn’t commit my pet peeve here, and that made me even happier than the fun troupe she choose. Thanks, Victoria! 🙂

Cole and Mel are both very likable characters, and their chemistry is positively sizzling. Mel has huge drama in her past that she hides fairly well until the very end–I was a bit worried at one point that she was overreacting to the situation when that past caused her to break it off with a cowboy (I know! A hot cowboy! Who keeps taking his shirt off! Crazy, right?) but when we do finally get more details, her reaction seemed justified. Cole still loves his wife and does all he can to honor her memory, but his moving on (after a very respectable five years) in done in a completely realistic and believable way.

The secondary characters are a lot of fun–I love the behind-the-scenes matchmaking machinations of Mrs. Harrison. She wasn’t at all subtle, but she was very sweet. And Gage is definitely going to make an awesome hero in a future book–he got major props from me for mentioning my current favorite TV show in a conversation with Cole:

“When the hell did you get to be an expert on this kind of thing?”

He took another swig from the bottle. “I know all about secrets and shit. Mrs. H and I watch Downton Abbey on Sunday nights.”

See? A future hero we can all get behind. He clearly has very discerning tastes.

Mel’s close friends in town–Kira and Piper–make brief appearances, and as soon as I heard the name of Kira’s pottery business, All Fired Up, it clicked into place for me. I remembered why the town of Passion Creek sounded so familiar–Kira was the heroine of Inara Scott’s Reforming the Playboy that I so enjoyed  last January. Very cool connection! More than one author working on a series can keep the writing fresh, when done well. So far this one is on the right track for sure.

In a nutshell: a very well-done second chance/ best friend’s brother contemporary romance. (It completely makes me forget that the guy on the cover definitely isn’t Cole, no matter how hot it is.) I can’t wait to read more from this series and from this author. 4 stars/ A rating
