What I’m Reading: Week in Review (9-7-13)

Okay, so I’m actually a day late. School has started and I’m exhausted. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

I haven’t been able to read as much as I’d have liked to, naturally. But I’m still ahead on my Goodreads challenge, so I’m calling it a win.

I read the novella I Dream of Johnny by Juliet Madison to get ready for the Three Wishes Blog Tour. It was cute–and short–though there were a few too many easy coincidences for me to give it more than three stars…a C+ rating. Enjoyable, though. I loved the idea behind it. I’ll definitely read more from this author. Then I read Tempted in the Tropics by Tracy March–review to come tomorrow, when the book is released. It was book two in the Suddenly Smitten  series, and overall I really liked it. I started Flirting with Danger by Claire Baxter last night, and so far am really, really liking it. The hero and heroine are both firefighters, which is totally awesome. It’s also releasing tomorrow, though the way my day is going (still have to finish lesson planning for the week, and we have a meeting to go to for Mini Moe #1’s upcoming Confirmation class) I don’t think I’ll be done with it by then. Darn it. Review will come, though.

Next I’ve got a few upcoming Indulgence titles that I need to get read (Hot Knight in Paradise, Winning the Boss’s Heart, Love Lost and Found, and Reforming the Cowboy), along with Deep Rising by N.R. Rhodes. I’ll squeeze them all in, don’t worry.

Denial, you are my middle name.

I’ve had more luck with audio this week, what with the setting up of the classroom, trips to and from work, and of course, walking the dog. I read Teach Like Your Hair’s on Fire by Rafe Esquith, which had quite a few really good ideas, but also left me feeling totally inadequate as a teacher. No way do I have time to add more after school activities to my calendar. Even knowing his school is year-round did not make me feel much better.

Then I listened to Gayle Forman’s duo If I Stay and Where She Went–totally not recommended for dog walking listening, but great stories. If I Stay was definitely more of a tear jerker, but Where had its share of tearful moments too. Overall I loved both of the books. I spent the first third of Where thinking Mia was suddenly terribly coldhearted, but saw the error of my (and Adam’s, darn that boy) ways soon enough. Both were incredibly well done. I’m now listening to Forman’s Just One Day because I need to get it finished so I can read and review the sequel, Just One Year by October.  I love the he said/she said format of these books–the first is completely told from the heroine’s POV, the second from the hero’s. Very effective. I’ll have to file that in my “ideas for NaNoWriMo” file.

Mini Moe #2 wants me to read the second Mortal Instruments book, now that we’ve seen the movie, so that’ll probably be up next audiowise. (Jury is still out on the movie version, though. I need to process some more and discuss with a coworker.)

Well, that’s probably enough stalling. I need to get back to work.
