Book two in the series–out now!

Queen of Wands

Queen of Wands
by:  Katee Robert
Release Date: 6/24/14
Genre: SciFi Romance

Book Synopsis:

When Jenny O’Keirna gets a chance to slip her older brother’s leash, she jumps at it, even if it means playing babysitter to a too-smart-for-his-own-good inventor. She’s not expecting the attraction that sparks between them—or that Sanctify is just as desperate to take him for their own.

Never in Mac Flannery’s wildest dreams did he imagine Jenny would be the one sent for him. He sees beyond the mad grin the sister of Hansarda’s new king presents to the world, and that combination of vulnerability and wicked humor is a siren call he can’t resist.

But Sanctify is always three steps ahead of them. On the run—and unable to keep their hands off each other—Jenny and Mac devise an insane plan: kidnap the leader of Sanctify, and stop this war once and for all. Unfortunately, they’ve just played right into his hands…

Review:

I knew before I finished book one in this series, Queen of Swords, that I would be reading book two ASAP. One, it would continue a story set in a world that I found fascinating, and two it would be Jenny’s story. Jenny was such an awesome secondary character in book one; I’d be hard pressed to find another one so deserving of her own book in my recent reading history.

So…it’s safe to say I went into this one with some pretty high expectations. They were met…to an extent.

Queen of Wands still has the snarky, say-anything-to-anyone Jenny that we saw in book one, only now we’re seeing the uncertaintly behind the snark. I loved the glimpses into her psyche and seeing just how much like her older brother Boone she really is. Her conflicted emotions about her father, who we never really got to see before his death in book one, really gave a lot of insight into her character.

Mac too was a great character. He’s the geeky-yet-hot guy we’re all secretly attracted to–in my mind, he was a lot like Bruce Banner as played by Mark Ruffalo:

(see how I picked a scientist-y pic? So. Hot. Yet still appropriate here.) He’s had a crush from afar on Jenny even though they’ve never met, which was totally cute.

They were totally cute. But somehow, it didn’t all exactly work for me.

I still have a lot of the same world questions as I had after finishing the first book, though I’ve just decided to go with it in this series. I’m not going to “get” everything, and I’ll be okay with that. Some of the more sci-fi-ish bits I just kind of read over quickly; obviously there’s a reason why I don’t read a lot of science fiction. (It starts with an “s” and ends in “cience”. Makes my brain hurt if I focus on it too long.) Jenny and Mac’s realtionship? I didn’t totally love it. They were cute, and they had chemistry, but it felt like the “I love you”s (even though yes, they will wisely put off the actual words for quite some time) came a bit too quickly. Even given the stress of their situation, it seemed too much too soon.

However, there is a HUGE surprise at the end of this one that totally guarantees I’ll be sticking around for book three. I’m still enjoying this series; even though this one wasn’t quite as strong as book one, it still made for a nice escape.

Plus, these characters are just fun.

Rating: 3 3/4 stars / B– (yes, I’m totally making those ratings up. It deserves more than a 3 1/2 and C+. Deal.)

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Author Bio:

Katee Robert learned to tell stories at her grandpa’s knee. Her favorites then were the rather epic adventures of The Three Bears, but at age twelve she discovered romance novels and never looked back.

Though she dabbled in writing, life got in the way–as it often does–and she spent a few years traveling, living in both Philadelphia and Germany. In between traveling and raising her two wee ones, she had the crazy idea that she’d like to write a book and try to get published.

Her first novel was an epic fantasy that, God willing, will never see the light of day. From there, she dabbled in YA and horror, before finally finding speculative romance. Because, really, who wouldn’t want to write entire books about the smoking-hot relationships between two people?

She now spends her time–when not lost in Far Reach worlds–playing imaginary games with her wee ones, writing, ogling men, and planning for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

  1. Me neither–it takes a bit of adjustment, but I am enjoying this series. I just figure on about 10% or so going right above my head 😉
