Skylla only knows that she has been kidnapped and held prisoner by the foreign invaders and their human allies. And that the world is ending. Or so the humans think. The invaders have made it clear that their arrival is one of hostile intent, and as their takeover spreads, so does the panic across the globe. No one knows how to defeat them, or if it’s even sane to try.

Jet, Skylla’s human captor, is up for the challenge, though. A traitor in Skylla’s eyes, he is working with them. But Jet has his own agenda; one that doesn’t include babysitting Skylla or helping the enemies. And as the human race struggles to keep the invaders from achieving their goal, Jet and Skylla’s paths collide to reveal the truth behind Skylla’s abduction.

The invaders are headed for the water. Jet is headed for the water. But that’s the last place Skylla wants to be. That’s where the future of humanity lies, and where the bridge to their yesterdays was burned. On a mission to take back what is rightfully theirs, Earth’s population is determined to make sure this isn’t the end. But some endings were never theirs to begin with.

Maybe it’s because of a recent conversation with a coworker, but as I was reading this my mind kept flashing back to The War of the Worlds. The aliens here aren’t really anything like those aliens (at least as I remember them–I haven’t read it since just before the Tom Cruise movie version came out, so I can’t be 100% positive), but that’s where my mind kept going nonetheless.

Ms. Wade has created an interesting–and frightening, and at times very confusing–world here. Water-loving aliens have taken over our planet, and humans are being slaughtered, captured, or enslaved/drafted their into service in alarming numbers. They’ve started at the coasts and worked their way in–Sky had hoped that they’d overlook her tiny, sleepy little southern town, but no luck. Before she realizes what’s happening, her family pets have run off, her parents are dead, and she’s being held captive in an unknown location.

As the story unfolds, Sky slowly learns that things aren’t as they seem…though she’s not entirely sure exactly how things reallyare. What she thinks is real keeps shifting and changing, and she doesn’t know who–if anyone–she can truly trust. All she knows for sure is that there is far more to this whole invasion than anyone could have dreamed–and it looks like it may have been inevitable from the beginning.

Honestly, I found a lot of the story to be pretty confusing, and I wasn’t entirely sure if it was the book or me (or both!) at fault for it. I ended up with more questions than I think the ending wanted you to be left with (if the whole world is involved, why do all of the Sacred Seven appear to be English-speaking Americans? Why was water such a precious commodity? Did the aliens horde it? I might have missed something there. Where exactly is the place that the Sacred Seven are going to be populating? I could go on and on, but spoilers…)

I’m up in the air about book two. On the one hand, I would like to see how my questions get answered. Plus, I really liked Jet’s character. On the other hand, my brain still kind of hurts, so…
