Review:
Most of the authors of the Night Shift novellas were new to me, and the book served as a great introduction. The fact that the entire book’s proceeds are going to charity made the entire package twice as appealing; even though I got a review copy, I still went out and bought my own just because 🙂
“Off Duty” is a sweet story about second-chances–second chances in romance, and second chances for a family. I loved this story from start to finish. If you haven’t read Sawyer Bennet before, it’s a great introduction. This novella is part of her Off series, but works well as a standalone. 4 stars/A-
“Rebound” was my first story by Chelle Bliss. I liked its construction–it begins at the end, and then takes the reader back to the beginning to see how Flash and Fiona first meet. It’s a fun and sexy tour of both New Orleans and the road back from heartbreak. 4 stars/B+
“Wanting to Forget” was a little more problematic–it’s not really a romance; it’s one man’s destructive path toward getting a woman he believes he can’t have out of his head. It’s really hard to like Jordie here. Really hard. Since it’s a prequel to his full-length novel ( Overtime ), there’s hope for his redemption. I’m willing to give him a chance to turn things around, but at the end of this novella I don’t know if I would if I were Kasey. Jordie has a serious amount of work ahead of him. Hopefully there will be groveling. And a major attitude adjustment… 3 stars/ C
“Closet Confessions” was my first Kindle Alexander story. I really liked both Derek (“Dr. Baby”–adorable!) and Justin, and was rooting for them from the beginning. Ms. Alexander added a clever twist in her story that made it even more enjoyable. 4 stars/B+
Brenda Rothert’s “Healing Touch” was another first read for me. I loved the romance between Joss and Carson–it was steamy but full of laugh-out-loud moments, not to mention an awesome use of a Magic 8 ball. The Magic 8 ball really does know all! I’ll definitely be reading more from this author. 4 stars/A-
Eden Butler’s “Swimming in Shadows”, like Toni Aleo’s story, wasn’t really a romance, though the potential is definitely there. Also like the earlier story, this is a prequel for a longer work,Shadows and Lies , the first in a new series. Fortunately, though, Ryan’s a much more sympathetic character than Jordie, even though he too is in a pretty dark place. He’s an Avengers fan, which puts me firmly in his corner. 😉 4 stars/A-
Overall rating: 4 stars / B+
I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
