Chicago Blaze Two

Abby

I only have one love now—the home furnishings business I’m building into an empire. Maybe money and success can’t love me back, but they keep what’s left of my heart safe. One-night stands are my way of scratching the occasional itch I get for something more. And no one’s better for that than a sexy as sin hockey player I’ll never see again after one very hot night together.

Luca

I used to love two things: hockey and women. But now my nieces and nephew are my top priority, because I’m raising them after tragedy stole their parents. Somehow I balance single parenthood and my career as a forward for the Chicago Blaze. There’s no time for women, until I get knocked on my ass by Abby Daniels. She’s everything I’ve ever wanted, but her devastating past may end us before we even get started.

Review:

Loved!

I didn’t do much research before picking up Luca–I’d read a few books by Ms. Rothert that I’d enjoyed, took one look at the cover, and got grabby hands. I didn’t even read past the first word of the blurb–so the intensity underlying much of the book’s conflict came as a complete surprise to me. I honestly wasn’t expecting half of the seriousness that I encountered, but this wasn’t at all a bad thing. I’m actually glad I didn’t go into it with preconceived notions.

Luca‘s main characters–Luca, Abby, and Luca’s three kids Cora, Jack, and Emerson, have all had to deal with some pretty intense realities. I loved that Ms. Rothert wrote about them all like she understood what her characters were going through and what they needed. Nothing in this book felt like it was thrown in there just for effect–not their tragedies, not the situations that helped to intensify them, not the moments that made things better. It all worked together to create a beautiful story about healing and moving on and making a better life with other people that might not be exactly like the one you used to have, but one that is just as special, even with its differences.

Plus, there’s hockey. And a shirtless Luca on the cover.

Honestly, I’m really not sure what more I could ask for…except maybe if that shirtless Luca were still wearing the evidence from his niece-imposed mani? 😉

Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
