Valentine’s Day – Love it or Lose it?

My perspective on Valentine’s Day now is that of someone married for 36 years. It’s not that I don’t believe in celebrating love, but after this long, we plan to do something on the day after the 14th of February. Flowers are more expensive on that date, restaurants are completely booked, and it can be stressful. We can let it slide a bit. We’ve already had our special February 14ths.

I can remember the thrill of getting a dozen red roses at the office for Valentine’s Day. Going out for dinner, before we had kids and mortgages, when the relationship between the two of us was the central pivot of our lives.

It’s not that the concept of Cupid’s day is a problem, but we’re smug marrieds.

If you’re single, it’s not a celebration for you. Hence, the creation of Galentine’s Day by Leslie Snopes on Parks and Rec. If you’ve lost your loved one, or are in a relationship that isn’t going well, the day can be a painful reminder.

I’m working on another hockey romance, with a couple who eloped on Valentine’s Day. After the marriage broke down, suddenly the 14th of February was a reminder of how wrong they’d been about love and forever.

My heroine in that book comes up with her own way to make the day meaningful again. Determined to stand on her own two feet, she saves up the alimony from her professional hockey player ex and on the 14th of February, donates it all away to charities. It’s a different way to express love to those in need.

Where do you fall on the Valentine’s Day spectrum? Greeting card company ploy to make money? Day to celebrate the most important relationship in your life? Depressing reminder of being single, or maybe a chance to celebrate being single?

This sounds so good. Love fake fiancés especially when one of them doesn’t believe in love. Thanks

Hope you all enjoy it. I had a lot of fine writing Mariah and Nelson’s story.
