An important undercover mission for her coven could get Lilian killed. Targeting one powerful vampire is dangerous enough, but when she’s left with his lethally seductive brother, Night, the stakes have never felt higher.

Night Van der Garde is in no mood to visit his uptight eldest brother, so when he finds Bastian flying out of his mansion door, the evening is looking up… until Bastian orders him to spend the week looking after a human—a bewitching female who rouses a fierce hunger that has him treading the fine line between duty and desire.

When a new threat to his bloodline emerges and secrets about Lilian are revealed, will Night choose to follow his heart or listen to the ghosts of his dark past?

Night ignored the voice at the back of his mind that whispered to seduce the beautiful human standing before him. As much as he desired her, he couldn’t act on it. Bastian might not have placed his mark on her yet, but she was to be his. That was the reason his brother had asked him to watch her. She had agreed to become his servant in exchange for the benefits it would grant her, like a longer life and immunity to disease, and this mansion as her home. Night couldn’t break that contract.

He would do as his brother had asked and watch her.

In his own fashion.

“Where is your room?” Because he intended to lock her in it and have a servant bring her three meals a day until he was gone or Bastian had returned. When her lips parted, he spoke before she could, not sure he would be able to handle the sound of her voice if it was as beautiful as the rest of her. “Do not speak. Show me.”

He grabbed her arm.

Surprising her.

And stupidly himself too.

She wasn’t owned. Touching her without Bastian’s consent wouldn’t hurt him or her. But part of him had been ready for a blast of white-hot pain and prepared to see her crumple in a heap as Bastian’s ownership of her took effect and punished her.

Night drew down a deep breath, catching her scent, and followed it up the stairs. He tracked it along the cream corridor, his shoes loud on the wooden floor, punctuating the heavy silence as the female followed him.

Her eyes on his profile.

Gods, she had to stop looking at him. His control was threadbare, and he feared it wasn’t because he had been due to feed tonight and had worked himself up for a hunt. Had he thought himself dead? He was no longer sure that was the case as his heart thundered, blood rushing in his veins.

He would be dead if he touched her though.

If he surrendered to the wicked urges she roused in him.

Night groaned inwardly as he passed the door of his own quarters and discovered her scent ended at the next one along on the opposite side of the wide corridor. Too close for comfort. He would be able to smell her in his room. He would know whenever she moved, would be fixated on her, tracking her with his senses and unable to stop himself. Maybe he could move. Bastian’s quarters were at the other end of the house.

He shook that thought away. Bastian wanted him to keep an eye on her, and what better room was there to be in than one close to hers in order to fulfil that mission? He could easily keep track of her without ever having to see her.

Night opened the white wooden door and pushed her inside. She gasped, the sound delighting his ears, triggering a war within him. He wanted to hear her gasp like that again as he gathered her into his arms and sank his fangs into her throat.

Marking her.

He shoved her away from him, perhaps a little rougher than he should have been treating her given she belonged to his brother and Bastian wanted him to take care of her.

Watch the female.

Night wasn’t sure that was a good idea.

Watching her would only lead to wanting her.

She moved away from him, walking deeper into the pale green room, and as she veered left towards the dressing table, he caught sight of the dress laid out on the end of her four-poster bed.

It was crimson.

His gut clenched.

Bastian had meant to place his claim on her tonight and business had pulled him away.

Night wasn’t sure what to make of that.

What sweet fucking fate had intervened to leave her free of Bastian’s rule?

His gaze shifted to her, tracking her as she paced the room, her eyes downcast. He looked from her to the dress and back again, a question bubbling up inside him.

Did she want to be owned?
