Review:
Start Us Up as a title plays two roles–it’s the start of a new series, which Ivy gets to kick off, and what Ivy and Heath are trying to accomplish together (their original goal, before an HEA and lots of sexy times took *some* of their focus, that is) is creating a new tech program that they’re hoping will change things.
Of course in the beginning what exactly they’re hoping to change doesn’t quite match up initially, but…details 😉
It felt really appropriate that the story is told completely from Ivy’s POV, since she was really the one who needed to make major changes. Her previous relationship (and life) had left her thinking certain things about herself that weren’t true, and it took some heavy lifting for her to get herself to a place where she truly believed she was deserving of good things. But fortunately she has a good support system around her to help her see the truth–once she let them in–and of course, Heath.
Heath’s the sunny optimist to Ivy’s “more realistic” view of life (in her mind, anyway), and I loved the modified puzzle analogy she came up with in her head to show how she’d learned to see relationships differently once she decided to let him in. It was absolutely perfect. (But that’s all you’re getting from me on that, because 1) I’d butcher it and 2) you need to read this one yourself! #yourewelcome)
The supporting characters here are all stellar–I loved both Ivy and Heath’s friends and employees as well as the “older generation” they had there to keep them on the right path. I know it’s oh-so-wrong, but CeCe’s habit of calling almost everyone who works for her by their job (Lawyer, Hacker, etc.) cracked me up every single time. And I can’t be the only one who wants a novella (at minimum) of CeCe, Diane, and Lydia’s girls’ trip, right?
I can’t wait to read the rest of the series–I absolutely called who would be the hero in Ainsely’s book, and am so here for it!
