On Tour with Prism Book Tours.
Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today, Melinda! What 5 things should readers know about you?
- My husband and I have been remodeling the house we live in since February. We’ve been without a master bath since June.
- We recently went from big dog owners (Labs, English Setters) to little dog owners (Yorkie mixes). My husband is the main dog walker in the house.
- I’ve been published since 2002 and have written nearly 40 romances.
- My trainer says I could lose those last 8 pounds if I gave up chocolate and coffee with flavored creamer. Uh, no. Chocolate and caffeine are my fuel.
- I read more historical romances than contemporary.
Give up chocolate? Oh, the horror!
Where did the inspiration for this book come from?
Nate first appeared in Book 2 of the series. He patiently awaited his turn in Book 10. And that’s probably one of his key characteristics. He’s tall, dark and silent, keeping his past to himself. But the impetus of the story came from my former sister-in-law, Lynn. Lynn had cancer while she was dating my brother. Chemo sent her into early menopause, so they didn’t use birth control. When they broke up, she had no idea she was pregnant. In Book 4, I referenced Nate having left someone at the altar. Lynn’s story seemed the perfect backstory for Nate’s jilted bride.
Real life and fiction intersecting—I like it!
How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?
I’ve been writing for 20 years and been published for 16. I used to devour Harlequin Blaze romances, particularly those by Susan Crosby. Hers had more heart than sex, often bringing me to tears. I don’t know why I didn’t see it before, but one day I noticed Susan’s PO address – just 45 minutes away from me. I wrote to her and she invited me to an RWA meeting. She took me under her wing. I wouldn’t be published without her.
That’s fantastic! Romance authors are really the best!
What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?
I’m working on book 3 in a connected multi-author series for Harlequin Heartwarming about 5 brothers who come back to their family ranch in Montana. I have three projects out in October – Support Your Local Sheriff (Harlequin Heartwarming), a box set by Harlequin Heartwarming authors (Heartwarming Holiday Wishes), and a multi-author full-length book holiday series – Return to Christmas Falls (Rumor Has It).
Sounds great! Can’t wait 🙂
What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?
The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare. Did I mention I’m a historical romance addict? Tessa’s latest release breaks some protocol with dialogue more like today, but it’s a snappy, clever read with heart.
I LOVE Tessa Dare! The Duchess Deal is sitting patiently in my TBR…
If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Will he pass the daddy test?
With his job in jeopardy, it couldn’t be a worse time for Sheriff Nate Landry’s recent past to come back to haunt him. But it would take an army to stop SWAT team leader Julie Smith. The fellow cop—and sister of his ex-fiancée—wants one thing from the beleaguered lawman: custody of the toddler son that Nate didn’t know he had.
He may not be natural daddy material, but he quickly takes a shine to little Duke. And then there are the feelings Nate’s been hiding for years. Only now Julie’s running for sheriff of Harmony Valley—against him. Time to retreat? Not if he wants a future with the woman he loves.
