A Conversation with A.M. Rose, Author of ROAD TO EUGENICA

Welcome, Ann! Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today!

Thank you so much for having me.

What 5 things should readers know about you?

Wow. This is a tough question. I guess I’d have to say:

1)    I think I’m funnier than I probably am. I make myself laugh daily with something stupid I’ve said or done. (Yes, I talk to myself.)

2)    I try to always be positive. Even when things look like they are going to shit, I try to find something good, something to learn from. I honestly believe that negative energy brings more negativity to my life, so I hope that by being positive it will bring positive things.

3)    I suffer from major imposter syndrome and low self-esteem. While I always try to put on a happy face, I can’t quiet the voices in my head. I think a lot of it comes from growing up believing I’d never amount to anything, that I’d never be smart enough or good enough. It’s definitely something I struggle with.

4)    I love high heels, but I rarely wear them. When it comes down to it, I’d rather have comfortable shoes on. I’ve embraced being only 5’2”.

5)    I can never remember how old I am. Like if someone asks me I always have to think about it. And one year I kept saying I was a year older than I actually was. Age is just a number anyway, right?

LOL, I’m with you on #5. I usually have to go a step further and think of how old someone else is (my brother, my co-worker) and do the math!

(And seriously, who doesn’t talk to themselves? Some days I’m the only one listening to me…)

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I started writing (actually putting pen to paper) four years ago, and in the grand scheme of things that doesn’t seem very long. It isn’t that I’ve never made up stories before, I’ve always had stories or scenarios playing out in my head. But it wasn’t until my niece inspired me to write her a story that I actually started to write them down. And now I can’t stop.

Is it wrong to talk to someone who hasn’t been writing since birth? 😉

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

The amount of projects I have going right now seems crazy when I write them all down. Aside from the next book in the Eugenica series, I’m also working on another novel for Entangled Teen coming out in 2019 currently titled Not Innocent, about a group of teens who are trying to escape an AI enforced prison. Aside from those and in the future (probably not next year) I also have a super funny story that I’m loving writing about what life could be after you die, titled The Afterlife Can Suck It. (The MC is the funniest MC I’ve ever written – see #1 above.) Then there is a completely contemporary, gender swapping, twisted retelling of Cinderella. A story about a girl with no concept of home. An issue driven story about a girl who is a cutter. And more ideas than I know what to do with.

OMG, The Afterlife Can Suck It sounds awesome! Sign me up for that one 🙂 (And the Cinderella one too—great ideas!)

What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?

I’m probably reading five or more books right now. Tarbin’s True Heir is a fantasy novel a good friend of mine, Kelly Lynn Colby wrote. Her world building is incredible, and I feel like I need to pay attention to every word so I’m taking my time going through it. Then there is The Breathless, by Tara Goedien. It’s intense and literally has me on the edge of my seat that it’s so hard to put down. A couple books on craft including one about writing suspense. And I’m hoping to start Nothing Left to Burn by Heather Ezell if I can get my Kindle to cooperate.

I love that you’re writing AND reading multiple books—awesome!

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Yikes. You sure know how to ask the tough questions. (Which is awesome and makes me think.) I guess if I had only one tweet I’d say something like:

Nano technology helped create her. The one closest to her could destroy her. Drea has to find the secret of who she truly is before it’s too late. #RoadtoEugenica

Perfect!

Could you share a little excerpt of Road to Eugenica?

Of course. I hope you enjoy.

I watch the clerks at the check-in desk. A man dressed all in black slides something across the counter. The clerk in a professional blue suit and bright white shirt peers around the room then casually takes whatever it is and slips it in her pocket. His phone number. Or a tip. Or maybe he’s trying to get a free upgrade. Even though his back’s turned to me, something about him seems familiar. His frame is large, his hair is dark. I shift uneasily from one foot back to the other. The clerk slides her hand along her perfectly groomed ponytail, leans toward the man in black, and then he spins around.

I suck in a breath. My heart stops.

Green eyes sweep the room, looking for someone.

Looking for me.

Thanks so much, Ann! Have a great release week 🙂

Two dimensions – And the girl who connects them.

Yesterday, Drea Smith couldn’t do anything spectacular—even walking and texting at the same time was a challenge. But today, she suddenly has more answers than Google, can speak and understand numerous languages, and she can fight. Like a boss.

Super freaky.

Drea has no idea where her encyclopedic knowledge has come from, but she’ll take it when she discovers someone out there knows her secret and wants her badly. And that they’ve been searching for her since she was born.

Since she was created.

With the help of her best friend Dylan, who just wants to keep her safe, and Maddox, a mysterious new boy who is prepared to get her answers, Drea will have to push her new skills to their limit as she uncovers nothing is quite what it seems.

As she uncovers…Eugenica.
