A Conversation with Stacey Rourke, Author of RAVEN (The Legends Saga #2–with a giveaway!)

I LOVE books inspired by classic stories–and Poe’s give an author so much material to work with!
(And fun fact–my street is named after Washington Irving. True fact I didn’t know until we’d lived here almost ten years.)

Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today!

Thank you so much for having me!

What 5 things should readers know about you?

1-I’m the mother of two, and they are my everything.

2-I also have two dogs that are spoiled rotten.

3-I have an irrational fear of garden gnomes. I swear those little buggers come alive at night.

4-I inject wit into EVERYTHING I write.

5-I consider myself blessed to have a career doing what I love.

I absolutely agree about the gnomes. Wasn’t Gnomeo and Juliet a documentary? 😉

Tell us all about your main characters—who are they? What makes them tick? Most importantly, what one thing would they need to have with them if stranded on a desert isle? 😉

Ireland Crane is twenty-four year old woman that happens to be cursed with the essence of the Headless Horseman. The Hessian lives inside of her, making it necessary for her to fight against his dark impulses. If she were stuck on a deserted island she would probably want her cloak. All she has to do is put that on and her sword, axe, and stallion will find her. That would make hunting on the island way easier!

LOL, true!

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

My love of the classics inspired me! I have been obsessed with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow since childhood. The teenage years brought on my appreciation of Poe. Retellings are quite the craze right now and it was my honor to put a fresh spin on the amazing works of Irving, Poe, and the mystery author(s) that will appear in the final book. I’m also hoping that after reading my books people that may not be familiar with the classics may want to check them out!

I love retellings! And you picked two (so far—I’m sure book three will have awesome choices too) that give you so much fun stuff to work with…

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I have been writing since elementary school, since I could first put crayon to paper. It’s always been a part of me; a creative outlet, a way to cope with things. It wasn’t until about four years ago that I decided to go public with this crazy dream of mine and I haven’t regretted it for minute!

Fantastic!

What do you like best about being a writer? What is the most challenging part?

What I like best is the opportunity to flex my creativity and to talk with readers about how my books affected them. What I dislike? The industry is flooded with talented. It’s very hard to stand out in these crowd, but I do my best at it!

I definitely agree. Especially now with self-publishing becoming more popular, it seems like almost every day there’s something new and fabulous out there to read!

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I have a brand new, top-secret project I’m working on right now. After which I’ll start on the final book in the Legends Saga.

(Grumbling.) Secrets. No fair. 😉

What authors and/or books have inspired you?

The first book I ever fell in love with was The Monster at the End of the Book, at that young age it instilled in me the joy of getting lost in books. That love affair lives on to this day.

I loved that book! I suspect Grover was my first fictional boyfriend, now that I think about it. (Though perhaps I shouldn’t admit that publicly…?)

What are you currently reading? What are your thoughts about it so far?

Right now I’m reading V-card by Alicia Michaels and I am loving it!

Just looked it up on Goodreads—here. Sounds like a fun read! (Adds to out-of-control TBR. Sigh…)

If you had to “sell” this book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Experience the works of Poe come to life in this twisted tale of love gone wrong. Hell hath no fury like a ghoul scorned.

Great job!

  1. I only have one, because my kids bought him for me and he’s wearing the outfit of my favorite NHL team. But I swear, sometimes the look in his eye…I keep him off to the side, out of the way just to be on the safe side…
